THOSE LAZY-HAZYCRAZY DAYS… Of summer!
I DON’T HAVE KIDS, but when the calendar hits June I can’t help but act like one. Instead of doing chores, I sneak away to sunbathe on our patio. At “bedtime,” you’ll find me immersed in a film at a nearby drive-in movie theater—absolutely not worried about getting less than eight hours of sleep that night. And summer workouts? Those often turn into leisurely walks to the ice cream shop down the street. There’s no denying it. When that summer sun makes its debut, I am a kid in a city-wide candy shop. Luckily that’s just the kind of attitude we needed for this issue, which is chockfull of ways—more than 30 activities and treats, to be more specific—to have the best summer yet as a family. Snack on brand new sorbet (packaged in the fruit shell corresponding with the sorbet flavor!) at Tony’s Meats and Market (pg. 17); explore a whimsical redesign of a Cherry Hills Village home (pg. 24); treat your pup to a spa day with a groomer who will come to you (pg. 50); meet the man behind the new travel company planning unforgettable getaways (featuring only private flights!) on pg. 55; and— the pièce de résistance—play, eat and explore your way through some of the best spots in our area (and a little beyond) on pg. 35.

STATE OF PLAY
A look at why we really root for youth sports programs. WE KNOW it’s not a competition, but when it comes to towns and neighborhoods that offer top youth sports programs, we’d list the south metro area as number one. Here, the love of the game reaches far beyond the field—it spreads to the bleachers and the friends that kids have for years and more. In other words, meaningful youth sports programs have become a staple in our family life. We are, some would say, seriously invested in the good times and good values accruing with each score and experience. And most everyone agrees as to why that’s the case: It’s all thanks to the community and the opportunities we’ve cultivated. “I grew up as a competitive swimmer in a small town and there was a high level of competition there, too,” says Taylor Whitley, head coach of the Sharks swim team at The Village Tennis, Riding and Swim Club. “But I think there are a lot more opportunities for kids here. You can swim at, say, five different pools instead of one, so parents and kids are always seeking out the best options.” Take the Village Cup—a year-round tennis tournament between The Village Club and three other area clubs designed to help kids learn tennis and have friendly, competitive fun—for example. “I know that our Village Cup is unique,” says Laura Sargent, director of tennis at The Village Club and the club’s Village Cup team head coach. “This program was started so we could stand on the court and coach kids while they play. It’s more low-key.”
8/31/19
C A S T L E R O C K | DT C | U N I O N S TAT I O N
The result is a kind of loyalty to the team and sport you might not see elsewhere. “Our kids want to know how they do,” says Sargent. “The kids practice together and know everyone is part of the group; they start to become a community. Kids typically stay with our program through every age group (from 8-and-under to 15-and-over).” “Parents can be just as competitive and involved as some kids,” says Whitley. “I think what it comes down to is that parents want their kids to feel success.” It sounds like that’s just what the kids are experiencing: “These kids bond across all ages in a way that they simply don’t in other sports,” says Jody Llewellyn, the former “head parent” of The Village Club’s swim team. “There is a lot of passion for these teams, and the kids grow so much as athletes and friends in a very short period of time.” 14

TONY’S MEATS AND MARKET HAS A NEW GOODY. By Malissa Stark-Rodenburg
DON’T WORRY IF YOUR SUMMER PLANS don’t involve exploring a lemon grove in the foothills of Italy or plucking coconuts from palm trees in Costa Rica. There are plenty of ways to celebrate the fruit of the season right here in the Rocky Mountains. One such experience that just went to the top of our must-try list: the new Bindi Sorbetto Ripieno at Tony’s Meats and Market. Available now in the freezer, this Bindi sorbet comes in each flavor’s own fruit peel or shell. “We picked this unique summer treat because of that exquisite packaging and the quality of the sorbet,” says buyer and merchandiser Anna-Maria Rosacci. This is the first frozen bite like this at the market (the only other specialt y cold sweet you’ll find are Peteybi rd gou r met ic e cream sandwiches). Dig your spoon into four f lavors: coconut, pineapple, peach and lemon. Better set a limit, too, for the amount of Instagram photos the kids can take.

The history of sorbet itself is unknown. Some historians say it all began in the 1500s in Italy; some credit Roman emperor Nero Claudius Caesar; and some say the sorbet we know today didn’t begin to take shape until the 1800s in France. The truth may be a combination of all three. The story of Bindi and its sorbet begins with Attilio Bindi. He launched Bindi as a small pastry shop in Milan in 1946, making deliveries via bicycle. Once the business was passed to Attilio’s sons, Rino and Romano, they worked to expand to an international brand.

GRAB YOUR CULINARY PASSPORT: DENVER TECH CENTER’S BELLEVIEW STATION HAS ADDED ANOTHER TOP FOOD DESTINATION TO ITS EATERY LIST. By Kendall Kostelic IT’S GETTING EASIER to travel the culinary world at Belleview Station. We can explore the Japanese art of sushi at Sushi-Rama, head south of the border at Los Chingones, go for classic mountain-inspired fare at Yampa Sandwich Company (formerly Backcountry Delicatessen) and, now, get transported to a chic Parisian bistro with Michelin star-level food at the new Le French. We went by the restaurant, which opened in April, for a taste. THE CHEFS: Sisters Aminata (chef) and Rougui Dia (executive chef) grew up in France. They have both had a passion for food since they were young, though much of the similarities in their culinary careers stop there. Aminata moved to the states with her husband and, when they got to Colorado, opened a catering business. Rougui, meanwhile, made a name for herself at Paris’ best restaurants.

In 2005, Rougui was named the executive chef of Le Petrossian 144 and, as such, became the first black female to hold that position at a Michelin-starred restaurant. She went on to become the executive chef at Le Vraymonde in Paris’ Buddha-Bar Hotel and then opened her own bakery. She was also awarded the French National Medal of Honor for her contributions to the country as a chef. It has always been the sisters’ dream to open a restaurant together, Aminata says: “When we were kids, we would play cooking and pretend we had our own place.”
LE BŒUF BOURGUIGNON: Beef short rib slow-cooked in red wine and turnips, served with a turnip “raviole” filled with Jerusalem artichokes, mushrooms, pearl onions and carrots

The house charcuterie board ($13) with an irresistible foie gras that makes our mouths water even now served as our first appetizer. The second was the Soupe à l’ Oignon ($9), a hearty bowl of caramelized onions topped with melted gruyére cheese. The Betteraves et Lentilles ($11; with roasted beets, pickled lentils and a well-seasoned crusted salmon) and the Poulet Yassa ($11)—a grilled chicken sandwich with lemony caramelized onions on a soft baguette—were our favorite entrées.
CROUSTILLANT DE LAPIN AU FOIE GRAS ET CHAMPIGNONS: Rabbit, mushrooms, beef feet and foie gras in crispy filo with a tamarind-orange gastrique
Because we couldn’t possibly eliminate a dessert once our server offered descriptions for each, we finished with three sweets: a divine lemon tart, a smooth chocolate mousse and a springy berry cake. A cappuccino and latte with espresso from Boulder’s DragonFly Coffee Roasters helped us clean the plates of each. WE’RE COMING BACK FOR: Dinner, where Aminata and Rougui’s creativity really shines. “Lunch is practical, but dinner is different,” says Aminata. “That menu features our creative dishes, most of which we form together. We call it four hands cooking.” Reservations for tomorrow night, then? 20

THE AMBIANCE: In short, we wanted to stay all day. The Dia sisters have designed Le French to be a constant buzz of globally influenced Parisian meals (inspired in part by their family’s Senegalese origins). They serve breakfast, brunch on weekends and lunch. An “Afternoon Delight” features small plates, a carted tea service and more. Dinner concludes with an evening dessert bar. Most kids like the strawberry-banana combo, says Shannon. Try this smoothie, which also (shhh) sneaks in some veggies for the day. INGREDIENTS Handful of spinach ¼ cup frozen organic strawberries ¼ cup your favorite smoothie “liquid” (Shannon recommends unsweetened almond milk, flax milk, coconut water, kombucha or orange juice) ½ cup chopped bananas
FOR DESSERT
When in doubt, CHOOSE ORGANIC.
Ice Raw honey to taste METHOD Blend all ingredients, except honey, together. Add honey at the end for additional sweetness.
EASILY MAKE YOUR OWN SORBET, too, by blending 1 cup of frozen fruit with ¼ cup of water. Use raw honey as your sweetener.
THE LEASTFILLING and MOSTFILLING FOODS FOODS THAT ARE high in carbs and low on protein will make your little ones hungry faster, Shannon says. Snacks with coconut, avocado or nuts will generally sustain them longer. Beef or turkey jerky is another solid highprotein option. However, Shannon continues, “I’m a big believer that there is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Listen to your body and your energy level after eating.”

IT’S ALL ABOUT BRILLIANT HUES, TEXTURE AND PATTERN IN THIS REIMAGINED CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE ABODE. By Jennie Nunn
LET’S HAVE FUN with it—that was the idea behind the redesign of this six-bedroom, seven-bath Cherry Hills Village home. The homeowners, then engaged and now married, fell in love with the layout, landscaping and exterior when they bought the place. They weren’t, however, sold on the Tuscan design inside. “The home was built really well, but the interior just wasn’t the homeowners’ style. Everything was brown and heavy,” says Andrea Schumacher, the interior designer on the project. So, they started by lightening all of the walls with white paint. You could say it was fate that connected Schumacher, the owner of Andrea Schumacher Interiors, to the couple and their knack for whimsical interiors. “I like to add a touch of humor and not make things so serious,” she says of her design aesthetic. The actual connector, however, was Facebook. “The wife and I were Facebook friends for a really long time and, when she was doing this house, she asked to interview us,” recounts the designer. 24

The inspiration for the colorful palette and lively details were, in part, thanks to the quirky Serendip wallpaper by Manuel Canovas now covering the dining room (on pg. 26). “The homeowners wanted a playful interior and were coming in with a clean slate for the most part, which helped when we sat down to go through fabrics,” says Schumacher. “The Manuel Canovas wallpaper has a lot of color and feels happy. The wife is not afraid of color.” Further proof that the homeowners are happy to take a risk: The matching fabric of that very same wallcovering, with vibrant pops of yellow and pink, covers the couple’s dining room canopy chairs. Schumacher continued the levity by deliberately interspersing cheeky elements throughout the rest of the space, using items such as a gilded rhinoceros sculpture from the Phillips Collection in the living room; a vintage white console entry table with legs resembling elephants from 1stdibs; a flocked wallcovering by Osborne and Little in the mudroom; and two exterior composite Great Dane statues by the Phillips Collection—a wink to the couple’s affinity for dogs
“In the GREAT ROOM, we wrapped the fireplace in grasscloth, which helps the TV disappear and is less expensive than adding stone,” says Schumacher. “The custom-made sofa is upholstered in Kravet’s Ypsilon in Vizir; the steel-and-nickel Chantilly chandelier is by Maxim Lighting.”
To create a glamorous SITTING ROOM, Schumacher chose a custom natural sheepskin rug, glassware and a malachite decanter by Jonathan Adler and, for that playful touch, a flocked dog wallcovering by Osborne and Little in the adjacent mudroom.

“We wanted feminine touches in the MASTER BEDROOM and to, overall, make it more unique,” says Schumacher. Some of the standout pieces: a hand-blown Branches B chandelier by Canopy Designs, layered Channels fabric in ebony and ivory from Lee Jofa on the ceiling and a custom bed.

In the REC ROOM, fit for entertaining and watching Broncos games, the owners’ existing sofa was paired with bar stools from CB2, a light fixture from RH and an ottoman tray in Evening Dove by Benjamin Moore.
(they have two of their own, one of which is a Great Dane). “They look like they are cast-iron, but they are really light,” the designer says. Things mostly started from scratch on the furniture too, as the homeowners didn’t bring many pieces with them. For the pups, the homeowners did decide to keep the existing Travertine tile floors. “And that was a challenge,” says Schumacher. “She didn’t want wood floors or engineered hardwood floors, but did want something heartier. I wasn’t sure I could make that tile work at first, but it looked great once we lightened up the walls and the home wasn’t so brown.” For Schumacher and the homeowners, every decision made for one great home base. “It was such a fun project,” says Schumacher. “I wish I could move in.”

The dramatic STAIRCASE is made memorable with a Tudanca runner by Stark and an eyecatching vintage green Italian chandelier from Skalar Modern. “We had the time to shop for that, which was nice,” says Schumacher.

Picture Perfect TIPS FOR SNAPPING PHOTOS WORTHY OF THE FAMILY ALBUM. By Annie Nagel CATCHING THE FAMILY’S best pastimes on film your smartphone is tricky. It’s easy to tip the scale from being present in those moments to acting like a constant fly on the wall behind the screen. What can help keep everything balanced? Expert photography tips—designed to drive you to spot when it’s worth getting behind the lens. Centennial-based family photographer Jennifer Winder, also a mom of four, took us down the list. SHOOT AT THE RIGHT LOCATION. What does your family love to do? Are they city dwellers? Mountaineers? Ultimately, you want to take photos of your family in their natural environment—a place where everyone feels

comfortable. One of Winder’s favorite locations is Greenwood Village’s Silo Park. WATCH FOR THE “GOLDEN HOURS.” Great photos are all about the perfect lighting, Winder says. The best light occurs within the two hours after sunrise and before sunset. When you’re out during these golden hours, make sure your family is standing in front of the light rather than looking towards it. This will create beautiful depth and prevent squinting eyes. Out around noon? Shooting in the middle of the day is tough, even for professionals. Winder recommends playing with the exposure on your camera (smartphones can do this too) to balance the light. Finding open shade will help, too. PLAY WITH PERSPECTIVE. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different angles. Get low and meet your kiddos (and even pups) at their level. For something more artsy, get up high and shoot looking down. KEEP IT REAL. “We all know kids are not always going to be perfect,” she says. Instead of forcing poses, let them be themselves and have fun while you take pictures around them. Candid photos, Winder says, can be some of the best photos.
PHOTOS: JENNIFER WINDER PHOTOGRAPHY
DON’T OVER-EDIT. Winder says less is definitely more when it comes to editing. Avoid heavy filters. Focus on fixing the light and simply “cleaning up” the image. Play with exposure and saturation to add depth and color-correct, but keep your photos as genuine as possible.

Garden Delights THERE’S NO OTHER WAY TO SAY IT: LES BELLES FLEURS IS THE FLOWER OF THE FLORALDESIGN FLOCK. By Kelly Smith
GARDEN SEASON is in high gear. Yards, porches, patios and decks everywhere are exploding with a profusion of colorful flower arrangements, and Les Belles Fleurs is in the middle of the action. You have likely seen—and stopped to admire— the work of the floral-design company. Owner Jennifer Smith and her team have been beautifying high-profile residential and commercial lawns across the south metro area since 1995, though Smith isn’t interested in dropping any client names.
MAKE ARRANGEMENTS Les Belles Fleurs Jennifer Smith 303.726.2706 Jennifer@Lbfleurs.com
Les Belles Fleurs, meaning “the beautiful flowers,” first made its mark on area homes with a small group of friends and fellow moms as employees. “We would all work to be done in time to get to carpool pickup at school,” Smith laughs. The main staff remains centered around those moms today, though the company has garnered enough business to employ a variety of gardeners.
The team creates a breadth of year-round and seasonal designs. Smith’s creative process starts with learning about each client and their home and flower and color preferences. Then bright blossoms are delivered and Les Belles Fleurs gets to work filling container gardens, flower pots and window boxes. “Each team member is trained in planting and maintenance techniques,” she says. “They are also free to get creative with displays.” Take note of those maintenance techniques: Les Belles Fleurs continues to keep arrangements lively with a maintenance program, which includes checking water levels, deadheading plants, fertilizing and making overall seasonal changes. As summer ends, “we pull plants and put in bulbs, pansies and cabbage for fall,” Smith says. 32
june 2019 // AvidLifestyle
Les Belles Fleurs is a labor of love for Smith: “Every house is different and everyone gets different flowers. … I’ve gotten to know my clients and their families, and love that I get to help create a happy atmosphere.” We’d say something special has been planted here. PHOTOS: COURTESY LES BELLES FLEURS
Smith has always had a green thumb; as a stayat-home mom, she often created flower displays for friends and neighbors in The Pinery before Les Belles Fleurs came into being. It was a Mother’s Day trip to Paris with her own mother that gave Smith the idea for the company. Inspired by the flower displays throughout the city, Smith started writing the business plan as soon as she got home.
Smith impressively relies purely on word-of-mouth referrals. And it seems people have been vouching for her often: Les Belles Fleurs is booked for the summer and is, right now, taking appointments for fall.

MAKE A SPLASH Pelican Bay at Cherry Creek Greenwood Village pbcherrycreek.com
Let’s go to the lake! By Brittany Anas
WE KNOW SOMETHING most Denverites don’t: To enjoy an authentic summertime lake experience, you don’t have to cross state lines. You don’t even need to drive through the metro area.
For a day at the lake (with or without a boat in tow) that will make you feel as though you’ve been transported to a beachfront town, just head to Pelican Bay inside the Greenwood Village entrance of Cherry Creek State Park.
IN CONCERT
The Pub opened just last year when renovations to the marina and the new name, Pelican Bay at Cherry Creek, were announced. “We are a one-stop-shop for outdoor activities,” says president Lisa Quinn. What’s on the shelves: Rent a slip for your own boat or rent pontoons, jet skis and ski boats to zip around Cherry Creek Reservoir. This summer, Pelican Bay has partnered with REI for paddle-sport rentals, too. Rent stand-up paddleboards, canoes and kayaks, and try out paddleboard yoga at The Wharf. Moonlight paddleboarding adventures and REI-led classes on camping are also on the schedule.

The bay’s weekly “Live! At the Lake” concerts and comedy shows taking place right outside The Lake House, touted as the only beachside venue in the area, are one-of-a-kind experiences. This year’s lineup includes lots of tribute bands, covering legends like Steely Dan, The Doors, Bon Jovi and Santana.
Previously known as The Marina at Cherry Creek, the hidden gem provides an all-inclusive lake experience with everything from boating (at The Marina) to weekly summer concerts (at The Lake House) to concessions for the kids and a nautical-themed pub (called The Pub) right on the water—with a wooden bar that’s shaped like the bow of a boat.

What’s New at MARJORIE PARK By Brittany Anas WE’VE LOVED the Museum of Outdoor Arts’ (MOA) Marjorie Park for its sculpture gallery, featuring most notably that whimsical Alice in Wonderland series by sculptor Harry Marinsky. Now, we predict we’ll enjoy the Denver Tech Center park as an outdoor destination even more: The MOA is getting ready to unveil a $1 million renovation to the area. The park has been closed on non-concert dates since November of last year to allow for the updates to be made. “We’re adding a mini stage with tiered seating for intimate concerts,” says Tim Vacca, director of programs with MOA. The museum is also adding a labyrinth, draining the small pond to plant native grasses and trees in its place and working to commission additional sculptures to add to the park’s existing work.
By 2021, you’ll find a “rabbit hole” that leads to the Alice in Wonderland sculptures, says MOA founder and executive director Cynthia Madden Leitner. The idea is to weave living plants into the infrastructure to create a whimsical pathway. On track to reopen to the public in late summer or early fall this year, Vacca says the park will be a place for lunchtime concerts during the work week and a space for outdoor yoga classes and family festivals. “We’re excited about the programming we are going to be able to bring,” he says. See you in the stands.

WITH ALL OF THESE outdoor plans in the books, you know it won’t be long before the gang gets a hankering for summer’s staple treat. We know just the place: The Ice Cream Farm in The Vistas at Park Meadows.

EAT HERE The Ice Cream Farm Lone Tree 303.729.2507 theicecreamfarm.com
The 12-seat ice cream parlor is the brainchild of barbecue champion and GQue Champion BBQ owner Jason Ganahl, who late last year— in the dead of winter—unleashed his shrine to ice cream directly next door to his second GQue BBQ location.
While his original barbecue spot, which opened in Westminster in 2015, has generated a deluge of accolades, he wasn’t entirely sure the follow-up would experience the same reverence. So, he figured he would try and scoop the competition with the addition of an ice cream joint. “I knew I could make really awesome ice cream,” he says. And make awesome ice cream he did. The recipes that had our team buying pints on our very first visit—because one striking scoop just wasn’t enough—start with milk from Longmont Dairy Farm. Ganahl scoured several Colorado dairies before choosing Longmont for his ice cream base. Its milk has 14 percent butterfat, 40

which adds to the ice cream’s texture and designates it as “superpremium.” None of the other ingredients, he stresses, have preservatives or come from a can or a jar. “Our goal is to incorporate as many local products as possible,” he says, adding that he crafts his own housemade caramel. Every flavor is, however, put together by Mary Mullen, a former pastry chef Ganahl hired to expertly churn the dessert on site. Flavors zigzag from banana pudding and salted caramel Oreo (Ganahl’s favorite) to pancakes and syrup and apple pie. Come fall, expect a seasonal peach cobbler ice cream studded with just-plucked Palisade peaches. Curious to see the magic happen firsthand? Customers often ask about Ganahl’s ice cream-making process. “And then we take them through the swinging doors to show them how we do everything from scratch. When people see what we are all about, they know that we are an authentic ice cream shop,” he says. Along with ice cream, which is made daily and scooped into bowls or housemade cones, the shop dispenses malts, shakes, donut ice cream sandwiches and ice cream cakes. Custom ice cream cakes are also available. While The Ice Cream Farm has been open less than a year, Ganahl is keen to expand: “We want to multiply, but, first, we just want to get our ice cream into as many mouths as possible.” I scream, you scream … you know the rest.

Explore Where to go when it’s time for a little adventure. By Ali Longwell
THERE ARE COUNTLESS places to play adventurer for the day in our state. For the best locales, take a page from the books of Colorado’s true outdoorsmen and outdoorswomen. We asked Ty Seufer, a Colorado native and owner and operator of Castle Rock Adventure Park and Royal Gorge Rafting and Zip Line Tours, for his go-to spots when the weather is nice—besides, of course, his zip lines, challenge course and adventure tower in Philip S. Miller Park.
CLIMB VIA FERRATA IN TELLURIDE Best for ages 10 (with supervision and climbing skills) and up For experienced mountaineers, Via Ferrata (Italian for “iron road”) is “really, really special,” Seufer says. At the climb’s most intense point, you are suspended 500 feet in the air overlooking Telluride’s boxed canyon. The climb takes at least four to six hours. Those with a fear of heights should stay away. Seufer highly recommends inexperienced climbers go with an area tour company or guide who knows the route. 42

FIBARK
FIBark, or “First In Boating the Arkansas,” is the longest white-water boat race in the U.S. In its 71st year, experienced boaters will race through 25.7 miles of moving water from Salida to Cotopaxi. The whole town of Salida—and many out-of-towners—come out for the unique shindig. After watching the competition, stroll through the white-water festival. Take notes, too, for your own whitewater excursions: Pro boaters from all over the world—including France, Germany, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Scotland, Israel, Italy, England, Switzerland, Austria and more—have come here to test their skills.fibark.com

The celebration of this sweet Colorado crop became so popular that Olathe raised funds to create the Olathe Community Park, where the event was held until moving to the Montrose County Event Center this year. A spectacular takeoff, plus a top-tier air show—that’s what you’re in for on this hot air balloon ride. Once the pilots inflate and launch their balloons, they’ll compete in contests like dipping into Steamboat’s Bald Eagle Lake. TIME TO WASH, RINSE, PLAY AND REPEAT. By Dahlia Jean Weinstein
YOU MIGHT not have it on the calendar, but Fido has big plans this summer, too—to run countless rounds in the backyard, make friends with fellow pups on hiking trails, test just how many laps are possible in the pool and, last but certainly not least, roll around in all kinds of pristine dirt patches.
“Irish loves his bath. He is always so proud of himself when he is done: He prances
around the house with toys.”
The only thing missing from this perfect puppy schedule: Some quality, cleaning-upthe-muck-Fido-got-into spa time.

Meet Soapy Dogs, a pet grooming salon that makes getting your dog’s coat refreshed super simple. “We are a comprehensive pet grooming salon on wheels that comes directly to your front door,” explains owner Karin Schoenfeld. “It’s so much less stressful for your pet, and a less-stressed pet means a less-stressed pet owner.” Schoenfeld should know. She and her four groomers have primped thousands of furry friends across Southwest Metro Denver, including Schoenfeld’s four bulldogs. Pampering starts with the arrival of the Soapy Dogs climate-controlled trailer with an on-board supply of fresh, warm water. The treatments, featuring environmentally-friendly specialty products, are targeted to the needs of each individual pooch (or kitty). With full-service grooming, pets are bathed and then enjoy nail- and coat-care, eye cleaning, ear cleaning, brushing and comb-outs, a

shampoo and massage, coat trims and, finally, a hand-held blow-dry. Soapy Dogs will come to you for something as quick and easy as nail trims, too.
SPECIAL SOAPY DOG TREATMENTS
For Schoenfeld, grooming your family’s best friend is truly a labor of love. She has been with Soapy Dogs (formerly an Aussie Pet Mobile franchise) since 2006, when she realized working with animals was her dream career. She began bathing pups, but always had a bigger goal in mind: “I knew I wanted to own the company from day one.”
THE FURMINATOR This three-part service is comprised of shampoo, conditioner and a patented tool used to reduce shedding. The treatment removes the undercoat and can leave your pet cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. With regular appointments, the Furminator can reduce shedding by 60 to 80 percent. DEEP ALOE RE-MOISTURIZING This one’s for dogs and cats with dry skin or brittle coats. After a bath, an aloe re-moisturizer is applied and then covered with warm cloths, allowing the moisturizer to really soak into the coat. After rinsing and drying, the new shiny and soft fur helps shed dirt and debris.
As luck would have it, then-owner Mitch Erickson offered to sell Soapy Dogs to Schoenfeld in 2014. She agreed to buy it with one condition: He had to sell her his house, too. “The business ran from that house, and I had nowhere to store four trucks and four trailers without it,” she laughed.
DE-SHEDDING AND “LIGHT” DE-MATTING Both treatments are applied according to your pet’s specific hair type. De-shedding removes the loose undercoat and “light” de-matting removes areas of clumped-up fur, common in smaller, longhaired dogs and double-coated larger dogs.
Have an elderly or anxious pet? No problem, Schoenfeld and her staff are expert groomers there too. They also offer hypoallergenic products for pets with allergies. For feline family members, services include a lion’s cut, a bath and brush-out, and dry shampoos for kitties who refuse to get wet. Don’t you look spiffy.
“This was Kapa’s first grooming experience with us. It is always rewarding to groom a puppy for the first time.”

Have Exceptional Trip Itineraries, Will Travel MEET THE TRAVEL TYCOON TURNING WEEKEND EXCURSIONS INTO VACATIONS OF A LIFETIME. By Brittany Anas

INFLUENCERS
// getaway guru GREAT ESCAPE: Sonoma wine country (left) is calling, and so are Manifest’s private flights (below), which are part of every getaway.
LIGHTNING ROUND!
We asked Potter some quick questions about his own travel wish list. Mountains or beach? “Beach.” What’s a travel trend you’re loving? “Glamping.” City on your bucket list? “Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland.” If Colorado were to have an official state postcard, what should the photo feature? “Steamboat Springs. I love that there’s still that Western culture in the town.” Guests come into town. What quintessential spot do you take them to for dinner? “The Buckhorn Exchange.”
of the world, including the Galápagos Islands, the Dalmatian Coast, Ireland and Vietnam.”
PICTURE THIS: You’re making plans to get away for the weekend and you have three trip options— surfing in Southern California, sipping bourbon in Kentucky or glamping in Yellowstone. It’s a tough choice; somewhat because you can picture yourself at each destination, but mostly because no matter which you choose, the hard work of planning the trip—from flights to special experiences— has been done for you. Sounds spectacular, no?
WHAT IS MANIFEST? “We are an experiential travel company focused on the active adult. Our goal is not to wear you out. These are, however, thoughtfully planned, active trips. You get to enjoy the same amount of experiences in three or four days that you might in a six- or seven-day vacation. We are starting with 20 itineraries, but will be introducing new trips roughly weekly. We will have club chapters in 50 to 60 U.S. markets, starting with Denver, with each chapter limited to 300 members in the first year. Trips are as short as three days or as long as seven days, with each

having between four and eight guests. One of our first trips is planned for Aug. 22 to Sonoma wine country.” WHAT MAKES MANIFEST DIFFERENT FROM OTHER TRAVEL CLUBS? “Many other travel clubs focus on longer international trips. Manifest trips also include private flights, which is unique. Flights to our destinations are under 2½ hours and take you as close to your exact destination as we can get.” HAVE YOU ALWAYS LOVED TO TRAVEL? “Yes. I was born in France and lived abroad for much of my upbringing, which really created a passion for travel and experiencing different cultures. I’m fortunate to have been to all corners 56

Jeff Potter, the former CEO of Frontier Airlines, Exclusive Resorts and Surf Air, thought so too. So, the Centennial resident launched Manifest, a new chapterbased lifestyle and travel club headquartered in Denver. We caught up with him to find out more about the club and his passion for seeing the globe.
WHAT ARE SOME VACATION TRENDS YOU’RE NOTICING? “People are seeking unique experiences. The trend we’ve seen since the mid-1990s, too, is that people are decreasing the length of vacations and, instead, doing more weekend trips. I also believe the ‘new luxury’ is authenticity and genuine experiences. Skift Research’s 2018 U.S. Affluent Traveler Trends survey shows that 67 percent of affluent travelers would rather spend their money on activities than on a nicer hotel, which is up eight percent from the previous year.”

WE ALL KNOW the phrase “two heads are better than one.” We rarely hear, however, of that second head being a 5-year-old on his way to T-ball practice.
PHOTOS: COURTESY LANE ROBERTS
In 2008, Lane Roberts was driving her son Jack from their home in Castle Pines to south Castle Rock—45 minutes away—for the aforementioned practice, when Jack said something that stuck: Why, he asked his mom, couldn’t he play ball at the empty neighborhood park with his friends? A lightbulb went on for Roberts. “We would spend all this time driving to practice and games and only knew two kids on the team,” she says. “I realized there was a huge void for an organized recreational youth sports program that would benefit the Castle Pines community and build friendships, not to mention save parents time and money.”
PLAY BALL
And that void was something Roberts intended to fill. In 2009, she launched Castle Pines Athletics, a recreational youth sports program designed specifically for children ages 3 to 12.
Castle Pines Athletics is now accepting players for fall teams. Here, a list of the program’s yearly roster. COACH-PITCH BASEBALL: Summer; for kids entering grades 1-5
Since then, more than 8,700 children have participated in the club. All games and practices take place at a Castle Pines school or at one of the neighborhood’s four parks, and the program is open to non-residents. With a background in public relations and corporate communications, Roberts had experience running a company. But a sportsrelated business was something entirely new. “Believe it or not, I’ve never even played soccer,” she laughs.
CO-ED BASKETBALL: Fall and winter; for ages 4 ½-11 Organization has been key to the program’s success over the last decade. “You have to be very structured, have a passion for serving others and be 100 percent customer-focused,” she says. “I really try to make practices and games work for our families, especially those with more than one child in the program. When we build teams, we honor friend and coach requests.” Roberts’ curriculum focuses on more than just crafting winning teams. Castle Pines Athletics works to create an environment where kids are physically active, but also learn the importance of a good attitude and teamwork. None of this would have been possible, says Roberts, without her manager Shannon Terry and assistant manager and NFL flag football commissioner Matt McDonald. “My kids were part of the program, which is how I got connected,” says Terry, who previously worked at Nike for 10 years. “I liked that I was able to include my kids in my work while they were on the teams. It’s rare to get to do that.”
CASTLE PINES ATHLETICS Castle Pines 303.957.1512 castlepinesathletics.com
Roberts and her family moved to Tennessee in 2010, so she runs things largely remotely now. It’s Terry and McDonald you’ll see on the sidelines of the games. It has been a joy, Roberts says, to see children grow up on the fields year after year: “Jack and my daughter, Grace, loved the programs. Jack liked picking his team shirt color every season and helping me sort equipment.” 60

GLOBETROTTERS in the making SEE YA, CLASSIC SUMMER CAMP. By Kendall Kostelic GOT A PRE-TEEN or teen in the house who’s ready to see the world? Forget the usual summer camp, then, and sign ‘em up for an adventure with Bold Earth. The 43-year-old company (that used to be based in Colorado but is now headquartered in North Carolina) plans unforgettable 12- to 21-day summer excursions all across the globe—from Thailand to Italy to Iceland to Arizona to, yes, Colorado. Centennial resident and ninthgrader Halle Gall went to California with the group last year. We’ll let her take things from here.
“THE TRIP WAS 14 DAYS.” “We hiked; surfed; explored Santa Cruz, the Big Sur coastline, the Little Sur River and surrounding areas and more; and went to Stanford University.” “I LOVED SURFING.” “It was my first time but became one of my favorite parts of the trip. By the very end of the first day I was standing on my board.” “I MADE SOME GREAT FRIENDS.” “I didn’t know anyone going into it; I think only two out of the nine kids knew each other. There were kids from all over: Two of us were from Colorado, one person was from Texas and, if I’m remembering correctly, two were from France. We all still keep in touch.” “WE WEREN’T ALLOWED TO HAVE OUR PHONES—AND I LIKED IT.” “You had to be connected to nature and the people with you. It was weird trying to talk on the first day, but the leaders helped with that a lot. They got everyone together and we all played games. By the second night it felt like we had known each other for years.”
PHOTOS: COURTESY BOLD EARTH
“THE HIKES WERE REALLY PRETTY.” “We mostly explored Big Sur and Little Sur. The trails were by the beach so we saw a bunch of little caves, tiny beaches and waterfalls. Most of the hikes were leisurely and fun, only one was kind of strenuous. I’m not usually an outdoorsy person, but this trip inspired me to want to do that stuff more.”

“WE CAMPED.” “We stayed in tents the entire time, which was really fun. All of our campgrounds were by our activities. I think the longest car ride we had, which was just under an hour, was from the airport.” GALL’S NEXT TRIP… “I don’t have a specific one planned yet, but I definitely want to get back out there with Bold Earth.”
