GOOD NATURE Time for a breath of fresh air.
OVER THE YEARS, I’ve built a checklist for the things needed to set up a solid campsite. And the moment our car stops in a quiet grassy valley (that I hope is close to a river), I begin to recite each item: Find a wide, flat and, in a perfect world, shaded spot for the tent; unpack everything in the car except the food, which stays in the trunk and safely out of nose-shot of local wildlife; start collecting firewood ASAP; and—most importantly—before getting to all that, spend at least five minutes letting the scenery of the place really sink in. I return to my unadulterated outdoorsy roots by way of these campgrounds at least twice a summer. I did a lot of growing up outside, first on my grandparents’ land in East Texas and then here in the wonderland that is our state. You wouldn’t guess it to look at me, but I can prep just-caught fish for a meal, keep a campfire roaring for hours on end and break the speed limit on an ATV. On another note, I’m also told that the summer shindigs my husband and I host at home can reach a Martha Stewart-esque level. And here, thankfully, those two things—pitching a tent in a remote setting and hosting an elegant patio bash—aren’t at odds. We are a community that’s ready to get the heck out of the house with a few breezy flannels, and also get a little gussied up for cocktails by the fire pit.

This month, I predict you’ll find me in that flannel exploring the changing High Line Canal (pg. 34) and, should I take inspiration from the hobby of local artist Duke Beardsley (pg. 55), fly-fishing on the South Platte River. The pretty patio table we’ve crafted on pg. 40, however, deserves something finer. In other words, we’re celebrating the season in every type of outdoor environment. It is, after all, a great time to be anywhere but inside.

THE REST IS HISTORY
// how it all started
MEANWHILE, BACK AT THE RANCH BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOS: DOUGLAS COUNTY HISTORY CENTER; ALL PHOTOS: COURTESY SCHWEIGER RANCH
Meet Lone Tree’s restored farmstead, located just off of I-25, that dates back to the 1870s. IF YOU’RE LOOKING to become well-versed in the history of Lone Tree—with the kind of firsthand experience that gives you a glimpse into generations and ways of life now long gone— there is just one place to go. “Schweiger Ranch is the only historic landmark in the city of Lone Tree,” says Elizabeth Matthews, executive director of the Schweiger Ranch Foundation. Lone Tree wasn’t incorporated until the 1990s, but this ranch was home to the Schweiger brothers—John, Joseph and Jacob—and their families starting in 1874. Close to $1 million was invested between 2008 and 2016 to restore the five-acre homestead of the Schweigers’ 38-acre property to its former glory and, now, there’s plenty to glean from. “We have a historic house we believe was built in the 1890s that has been restored to, we believe, 1920s conditions,” Matthews says. “We have a tractor shed that was constructed around the 1940s that, inside, has what we call a ‘what is this’ or ‘take your best guess’ wall with antique items found during the restoration process. We have a stable, loafing shed (which four goats currently hang out in), barn and the corral that goes with those. We have a grain silo and chicken coop (with 35 hens and a peacock)
that we also believe were built in the 1940s and, finally, a granary building.” Catch all that? It’s not often that you find so many historical curiosities in one place. You also aren’t typically privy to an awardwinning historical restoration. The Schweiger Ranch Foundation received a 2017 Stephen H. Hart Award for Historic Preservation from History Colorado for its care of the ranch. “It’s a great honor to receive the distinguished award,” Matthews says. “It makes us feel like we’re achieving what residents and the city believed we could do, which was make the ranch a really good example of how to preserve a historic place when, honestly, it could have been mowed over and turned into condos. It’s a very special and unique place.” In fact, the plan to make Schweiger Ranch a historical destination didn’t begin until the aughts, but we’ll leave the rest of that story for the tour. “We are open the third Saturday of every month from 1-5 p.m. for self-guided tours, with a guided tour at 2 p.m.,” says Matthews. “We can usually set up private tours for larger groups of at least five people and we do events: We have a campfire series [where 14

you’ll hear stories from historical figures like Buffalo Bill], host the Lone Tree Fall festival and have our signature Austrian Christmas and Christkindl Market to celebrate the culture and Austrian heritage of the Schweigers. … There are a lot of opportunities for those interested in volunteering, too.”

Bowls Away A TRADITIONAL HAWAIIAN DISH SWAPS SERVING BOWLS FOR WAFER TACO SHELLS. By Laurel Thompson FIRST THERE WERE BOWLS and hand rolls, then burritos. Now, raw fish has taken on a decidedly quirkier form at Corner Poke. Hold out a hand for the eatery’s poke tacos. “We wanted to do something different and offer something that people don’t already have in Denver,” says head chef Jun Feng. “We are the only ones that we know of who do poke tacos. We thought it would be a great way to get people to try something new, rather than ordering the same sushi rolls.” Fresh, sushi-grade fish is piled atop a bed of complementary ingredients on five distinctly unique taco creations: Orangé U Hungry, Forget Me Not, Tropical Green, Monster Blue and Sriracha Red. Feng’s favorite is the Orangé U Hungry, a combination of tuna, mango, cucumber, red onion, crab salad, shoyu spicy aioli, sesame seeds and green onion. “It’s both sweet and spicy, which makes the taco feel like a combination of an appetizer and dessert. It’s a nice mix of flavors,” he says. Monster Blue is for spicy salmon lovers, the spicy fish topped with corn, edamame, crab salad, seaweed, ponzu and spicy aioli. Not a fan of raw fish? Forget Me Not highlights tasty teriyaki chicken, while Tropical Green offers a nice balance of fresh veggies, fruit and seared shrimp.

Feng’s advice for first-timers: Order the poke tacos as an appetizer and try to narrow down your favorite. Challenge accepted.

On King’s PIQUANT PLATES: burnt ends, ribs and, of course, pickles.
1. THERE ARE FIVE MUST-HAVE BARBECUE AND GRILLING TOOLS, says King: a slotted metal fish spatula, long metal tongs, a meat fork, a vacuum marinator and a chimney starter. 2. USE A CHARCOAL GRILL. Charcoal grills burn hotter than propane and allow you to take advantage of both direct and indirect heat, depending on the placement of your coals. Speaking of which: Spread charcoal evenly in a single layer just out of reach from where the food will be cooked. 3. ALWAYS OIL YOUR GRILL. An oiled grill gives your meat a great sear and ensures that whatever you’re cooking doesn’t stick to the grates, says King. 4. USE MELLOW WOODS such as apple for grilling fish, cherry for pork and oak for beef.
6. “THE THICKNESS OF THE MEAT IS IMPORTANT when determining when to use your grill cover,” says King. Close the lid when grilling meats thicker than ¾-inch and leave the lid off for all meats thinner than ¾-inch.
10. LOOKING TO START SMOKING? There are several methods King uses, including sprinkling a large handful of hardwood pellets directly onto the grill box under the grates. Make sure to keep the lid closed as much as possible to prevent pellets from flaming if you go with this method.
7. FLIP CUTS OF MEAT (THINK STEAK AND CHICKEN BREAST) OFTEN, advises King: “You want to turn your meats frequently to avoid burning either side.” Unless you’re cooking burgers on the grill—only flip those once. 8. BRUSH VEGETABLES WITH OIL before throwing them on the grate. Tender produce like asparagus, bell peppers and onions should be grilled over medium, direct heat. Cook thicker, tougher produce like squash and potatoes slow over low, indirect heat. 9. IF YOU’RE THINKING KABOBS, skewer the meat or vegetables with two skewers, King says: “The meat and vegetables won’t slide off and you can easily handle the skewers when turning them.”
EAT HERE Burnt End BBQ Greenwood Village 720.638.1153 burntendbbqdenver.com
5. MAKE SURE TO KEEP AN EYE ON THE TEMPERATURE of meats and fish. “The temperature is the best way to guarantee great flavor and assure that you are adhering to food safety standards,” says King. “Before you do anything else, get yourself a reliable thermometer, preferably an instant-read.” 20

THE FIREPLACE HAS LONG BEEN THE CENTER OF A HOME. AREN’T YOU GLAD THE FIRE SPACE HAS EXTENDED ITS REACH PAST THE PATIO DOORS? By Ali Longwell FIREPLACES AND FIRE PITS have become the hub of a quality Colorado backyard, says Phil Steinhauer, owner of Centennial’s Designscapes Colorado: “I think outdoor fire elements are so popular because they’re versatile and really do extend the life of a patio on a chilly evening.”
PHOTO: COURTESY DESIGNSCAPES COLORADO
The trick to getting a fire setup right starts with knowing how you’ll use it. “A fireplace is more intimate, whereas a fire pit creates more of a social campfire situation,” Steinhauer says. For a fireplace, think oversized and comfortable furniture that’s “just like what you would lounge on inside
around the embers,” he says. For a fire pit, think bench seating and Adirondack chairs that can accommodate a large number of guests. Here, Steinhauer takes us through other guidelines to follow when creating an outdoor hearth by way of this showstopping Evergreen backyard on Bear Creek. Be warned: out-ofstate guests may look to mimic your result. “The outdoor lifestyle has become synonymous with a Colorado lifestyle,” Steinhauer says.
KNOW HOW YOU’LL USE IT. This fireplace functions as the home’s center for outdoor entertaining, so it only makes sense that it features both ample seating and a dining arrangement.

CONSIDER GAS FLAMES. There are many reasons, aside from the obvious fire danger, why Steinhauer encourages gas fire areas. “It takes a long time to build a fire and it can be smelly,” he says. “Gas is cleaner and easier to light and maintain—you can sit around it for five minutes or five hours.” While nothing will replicate the crackling of a wood-burning fire, Steinhauer suggests choosing fake log sets (of which there are many options) to make fires look natural. This particular homeowner wanted the fireplace to be wood-burning so they could create a “blazing fire” for guests. Some of the property’s other fire features, however, are gas.
STICK TO ONE RULE WITH MATERIALS. “Blend the outside design with the inside,” says Steinhauer. Start with stone that, one, is complimentary in style and color to your home’s architecture and, two, matches the natural landscape. “This is what creates the seamless transition to an outdoor living space,” he says. Hard materials, such as stone or brick, are best for fireplaces. Use a firebrick for the interior of a fire pit or fireplace to keep the exterior stone from getting too hot and cracking.

// around back KEEP PROPORTIONS BALANCED. This massive yard features two outdoor fireplaces and three fire pits that hug part of the creek. The sheer size of this fireplace—towering more than 18 feet high and reaching 15 feet in width at the base— had to be “grand enough for the space,” says Steinhauer. “The mountain behind it was big, as was the scale of the yard.” It took a lot of engineering genius, including the use of scaffolding to complete the top stonework, to make it this big.
PHOTOS: COURTESY DESIGNSCAPES COLORADO
DWELLING WELL
For Steinhauer, a good height is 18 to 20 inches for a fireplace hearth or overall fire pit: “I think keeping fire features a little lower allows your legs to feel heat.” Going a little taller can allow the cap or cover to be used as a table. However, no size within reason, he says, is too big.
BE THOUGHTFUL WITH LIGHTING. “We don’t really like to see the lighting elements, so we used a lot of additional lowvoltage, recessed lighting,“ says Steinhauer. “Many of the bulbs are hidden in stones or around the back of the fireplace. The lighting is subtle, which makes it more relaxing and inviting.”

Fabulously Functional
A LARGE-SCALE REDESIGN BROUGHT A ’90S-STYLE CASTLE PINES HOME INTO THE 21ST CENTURY. By Ali Longwell
DARK. DATED. DEPRESSING. These were the words homeowners Amy and Richard used to describe their 6,500-square-foot Castle Pines home. “We liked the house’s reclaimed brick exterior, layout, high ceilings and custom finishes (like beautiful cabinetry and crown molding) that we didn’t see in many other homes,” says Amy. It was the ’90s-style design inside that was the problem. They lived with the setup for five years. But as of 2017, the family of five became officially fed up with all things outdated. “We needed an update,” Amy says. “We wanted to change the interior of the home to a lighter, brighter and cleaner vibe to make it more current, as well as create something functional and comfortable for our kids and dogs.”
PHOTOS: MEAGAN LARSEN
To lighten and enliven the KITCHEN, Campbell sanded and refinished the cabinets, added a new faucet and sink, replaced the counter stools and added a breakfast nook with a new table, chairs and rug. “We eat every meal at either the island or breakfast nook,” Amy says.

Amy and Richard called on Ashley Campbell of Ashley Campbell Interior Design to bring their home into the modern age. Together, they orchestrated complete overhauls of the master bedroom and bathroom, kitchen, two living spaces and each of the kids’ rooms. Hello, home sweet home.

// home tour Campbell chose oranges and pinks as the color palette for BEDROOM TWO for the middle daughter, who was looking for a bohemian aesthetic. Campbell added fun accents that matched in color, but not pattern, to get the right vibe.
PHOTOS: MEAGAN LARSEN
GOING LIGHT AND BRIGHT Campbell largely focused on one detail for a major impact: Choosing light floor, wall and trim colors, and light furnishings. “I am a big believer in using a neutral paint color throughout the main spaces of a home,” she says. Her weapon of choice: Revere Pewter, a light gray by Benjamin Moore, that would also support accent colors.
The youngest in the family, Amy and Richard’s son, calls BEDROOM THREE, the converted office, home. The room was minimally reconfigured, with just the location of the door moved and a closet added.
One of the homeowners’ favorite elements for lightening up the place was Campbell’s choices in light fixtures. “The fixtures make such a difference and really dress things up,” says Amy. Adds Campbell: “Decorative lights can often be the jewelry of the room.” KIDDING AROUND Amy and Richard have two daughters and a son. Before the redesign, the two girls were sharing a room so no one would have to take the basement bedroom. “No one wanted to be down there alone,” says Amy.
BEDROOM ONE, belonging to the eldest, 13-year-old daughter, was made “whimsically sophisticated” with deep purple and gray hues, new carpet, lighting, window treatments, furnishings, bedding and a built-in window seat.
So, Campbell reconfigured the home office into a bedroom so each child could have their own space above ground—all of which the kids, of course, had a hand in designing. Amy “really wanted their personalities to be reflected in their rooms,” says Campbell. The fabrics and furniture, however, stayed durable and practical.
The KIDS’ BATHROOMS got a minor refresh, with each now featuring an updated mirror, lights, a repainted vanity and pops of color that tie in to their bedrooms.

The large window-pane-like shower tile in the MASTER BATHROOM, Campbell says, serves as an unexpected focal point.
PHOTOS: MEAGAN LARSEN
SPA TIME Perhaps the biggest update took place in the master bathroom. “We brought the bathroom down to the studs,” recalls Campbell. Where there used to be clunky and outdated features, plumbing issues and insufficient storage, there is now a free-standing tub, vanities with custom cabinetry from Denver-based Precision Homes of Colorado, a reconfigured shower and mended plumbing. “It’s serene, tranquil and spa-like,” says Campbell.
The MAIN LIVING ROOM got a new layout and new furniture. Campbell chose two different sofas for the space to “give the family more design flexibility, should the time come for them to make a move.” For now, high ceilings, great mountain views, connection to a deck and Amy’s vote as the best room in the house make it a prime spot for guests.
MAKING A LIVING SPACE The goal was to “casualize” the two living spaces. The lower-level rec room was opened up for family hangouts by replacing a kidney bean-shaped bar with a built-in custom cabinet and wet bar from Precision Homes. Now, the room has storage for snacks, a sectional for movies and a game table. The main living space upstairs was rearranged to be more conducive to entertaining guests.
The LOWER-LEVEL REC ROOM went from “a catch-all for toys and outdated furnishings to a main entertaining space the whole family can enjoy,” says Campbell. The custom cabinet, now the room’s main focal point, is accessorized with metalmesh door inserts and a chevron marble backsplash.

Changing the Channel We have one of the country’s longest urban trails and canals as our backyard, and the outdoor hub is about to get even better. Pretty lucky, no? By Dahlia Jean Weinstein
LIFE IN THE SOUTH METRO AREA would be incomplete without the High Line Canal. We hear it often: Once you make a home surrounded by the channel and its adventure-friendly trail, it becomes incomprehensible to imagine a day without it. No one understands that interconnectedness quite like Harriet Crittenden LaMair.
PHOTO: JILL KAPLAN
About twenty-two years ago, the Cherry Hills Village resident and former Cherry Hills Village councilwoman was strolling along her favorite stretch of the canal behind her home when, suddenly, she felt a contraction. Pregnant with her third child, LaMair went into labor right there on the trail.

“What you do with the ditch after Denver Water stops
the irrigation water is the part of this project that fascinates
me. I’m passionate about how we can change that ditch into an integral part of stormwater management in the metro area.”
—High Line Hero and Conservancy board member Graham Hollis on his excitement about STEP.
Nearly two decades later, in 2014, she became the executive director and, in 2018, a founding partner of the High Line Canal Conservancy, the group that has been working to preserve, protect and enhance the legacy of the High Line Canal for people to enjoy now and in the future. It’s a big job to sign up for, to be sure: In case you lost count, the canal is a whopping 71 miles long. You have likely heard the story from neighbors, if you weren’t in on the action yourself: A group of citizens got the idea for the nonprofit when Denver Water (which currently owns and operates the canal) recognized the canal was outliving its historic purpose as an irrigation channel and had taken on new life as a recreational amenity. A conservancy, these residents decided, could do more for the canal than any one governmental agency. The group has been making a name for the Conservancy and the canal since, and they aren’t done yet. In 2017, in partnership with Denver Water and with the support from each of the 11 jurisdictions along the canal, the Conservancy released a plan—a Community Vision Plan—to revitalize the canal based on input and guidance from members of the community who treasure the canal most. More than 3,500 of us chimed in on the creation of the plan, also known as phase one. Phase two, the Framework Plan, where update and upkeep ideas are put in to action, is anticipated to be completed this year. “I think this is one of the most important greenway projects in the country right now,” says fellow Conservancy board member and Cherry Hills Village resident Kathy Tyree, who moved here from Manhattan and previously worked with the Central Park Conservancy. She is also a High Line Hero, what the Conservancy calls all members. “The High Line Canal is bigger than Central Park. That’s the magnitude and importance of this project.” There are four objectives in the Framework Plan. Three projects are getting things started. New mile-markers and signage will be erected along the trail as soon as the end of this year. The Stormwater Transformation and Enhancement Project (STEP)—in partnership with Denver Water, Urban Drainage and Flood Control District and the jurisdictions along the canal—will start this fall. It is designed to improve water and air quality, decrease flooding, grow wildlife habitats, improve health and livability for the communities along the canal and more. And, next month, you’ll be able to get your hands on an updated map focused on helping trail-goers explore everything the canal’s footpath has to offer. “The new Guide to the High Line Canal has something for everyone,” says Suzanna Fry Jones, director of marketing and community outreach. “Walkers, bikers, joggers and nature-seekers alike will find it full of tips

A BIRD’S-EYE VIEW Watch and listen closely on your next stroll along the canal trail. Word has it that the bird-watching is stellar. Here, just a few of the species to keep an eye out for both year-round and during the migratory season (which varies by type of bird).

The trail—which, aside from moving along childbirth, also works well for walking, nature viewing, bicycling, hiking, horseback riding and picnicking—extends from Waterton Canyon to Green Valley Ranch, meandering through South Suburban, Greenwood Village and Cherry Hills Village parks along the way. “It weaves through so many neighborhoods in such a completely unexpected way,” says Meredith Wenskoski, president and founder of Livable Cities Studio and project manager for the Conservancy’s Framework Plan. And LaMair is just the person to lead the way. Yes, she made it from the canal to the hospital in time to give birth to her daughter Kate, now 21. Kate is a college senior studying psychology with a focus on nature therapy. LaMair’s middle son, Davis, is a fly-fishing guide in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and her eldest, Edwin, is majoring in environmental law. Are you sensing a theme here? LaMair instilled a love and passion for nature and the environment in her children. As director of the Conservancy, her mission is to instill that same love and passion for the High Line Canal in Coloradans. “There are sections of the canal that were filled in with dirt [and had no access to running water], sections that were sold off and sections being totally ignored to the point where you couldn’t even make your way through to the next portion,” says LaMair. “Those things triggered the need to really step forward to preserve the canal. Now, the Conservancy will provide that protection in perpetuity.” 38

BIG HELPERS
Leslie Heins (left) and Lisa Cook (right) of Cherry Hills Village’s Affair with Flair know how to throw a great party. They have been orchestrating renowned celebrations for more than 30 years. Here, how they plan to have a good time.
HAVE A RAIN, SNOW & HIGH-TEMP. STRATEGY.
“We all know Colorado weather is crazy. Create an outdoor party room that covers you from the elements with a tent, umbrella, pergola, etc. It’s not just about rain and snow, it’s about shielding the sun and staying cool.”
KEEP THE BUGS AT BAY. “Put a cap on your glass or opt for patio glasses that come with lids. A festive idea that isn’t completely foolproof, but can certainly help, is to cover the top of your glass with a slice of citrus complimentary to the drink (e.g., a protective slice of lemon for lemonade). Citronella candles are, obviously, a big help.” LET THERE BE LIGHT.
“Lighting is very important and has to be balanced; a lighting designer can make things just right. In terms of trends, string lighting is still popular. But those strings now have different bulb shapes outside of Edison bulbs, like round multi-colored orbs or metallic gold-leafed vases.”

What you leave her curated sessions with, the designer says, is not trendy jewelry that will end up just taking space until it’s eventually thrown out. Sturman designs with the idea of heirlooms in mind, creating jewelry (that, by the way, can be mixed and matched and layered) to be passed down to younger generations. Here, we delve more into Sturman’s passion for the accessory.
HAVE ANY FAVORITE PIECES IN YOUR COLLECTION RIGHT NOW? “We’ve been doing a lot of classic cuffs with inspirational messages, which we write in diamonds. I also have a modern spin on a locket featuring individual initials with the option of adding charms. Many of our earrings are crawlers (going up your ear like a vine) or have a jacket (an extra component that goes on your earring post behind the earlobe).” WHAT ACCESSORY TRENDS SHOULD WE BE LOOKING FOR? “Right now I’m showing a lot of flower, star and rainbow details. You’ll also see a lot of pearls and bows this season. We have so many personalized options here at Signature 24 so clients can have pieces made for whatever is currently trending in their own life, too.”
HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN INTERESTED IN THE JEWELRY BUSINESS? “My sisters and I would always play with jewelry growing up. We layered stacks of beaded and braided friendship bracelets all the way up our arms and had ‘arm parties.’ I’ve always been interested in stones—from my rock collection when I was six to the gemology degree I got as an adult.” WHAT MAKES YOUR PIECES SPECIAL? “Signature 24’s collection consists of wearable, fine, high-quality and unique jewelry. We have everything from classic diamonds to personalized jewels. Our quality is excellent. Most everything we make is 14-karat yellow, white and rose gold, with diamonds and semi-precious stones.” TELL US ABOUT THE NAME SIGNATURE 24. “Signature is about finding your own unique style. No Harm Sun WE ALL KNOW TO WEAR SUNSCREEN, but are we wearing said sun protection correctly? Leah Shafer, a well-known medical aesthetician and the owner of Skin by Leah, takes summer’s most popular piece of advice a step further. (No) burn! By Malissa Stark-Rodenburg CHOOSE BROAD SPECTRUM EVERY TIME. Traditional sunscreen protects against UVB radiation (the kind that causes you to burn). Sunscreen labeled “broad spectrum” protects against both UVB and UVA radiation (the kind that contributes to aging). According to the Mayo Clinic, both types of rays can cause skin cancer. For total protection, broad spectrum is your best bet. DON’T BE AFRAID OF MULTI-USE PRODUCTS. Use sunscreen application as an excuse to gain extra benefits for your skin. “I’m all about a sunscreen that also has a treatment in it,” says Shafer. Think sunscreen that also moisturizes, adds color to your cheeks or revives your eyes. BUT DO AVOID THE MAKEUP MYTH. Makeup alone, though it does cover the skin, will not provide enough protection from UVB and UVA radiation. Shafer recommends wearing sunscreen under foundation and lip balm with SPF under lipstick. DON’T GO LOWER THAN SPF 30. According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, SPF 30 allows about three percent of UVB rays to reach your skin; SPF 50 lets roughly two percent through. DON’T MISS AN INCH OF SKIN. Most people forget their scalp, ears, lips and hands. Don’t be like most people. “Your hands are exposed constantly,” says Shafer.

sunscreen brands 5 Shafer trusts STRAIGHT FROM THE SOURCE Image Skincare Prevention+ sunscreens (also recommended by a skin-care expert in our May issue) are all moisturizing, with each of the four iterations offering its own additional skin benefits. The SPF 50 formula won an Associated Skin Care Professionals award in their Skin Deep magazine. $40, imageskincare.com All SkinCeuticals sunscreens offer broad-spectrum, chemical-free coverage. The sunscreen line comes in a wide variety of formulas: as a lotion, eye cream, tinted sunscreen and more. Shafer recommends the matte sunscreen for summer to combat shine from sweat. $30-$66, skinceuticals.com OVER THE COUNTER There are still great over-the-counter options at the typical supermarket. Shafer likes Neutrogena, as it is a company dedicated to skin-care. Neutrogena sunscreen comes in a variety of lotions, sprays and sticks. $8.99-$15.99, area supermarkets and neutrogena.com Coola sunscreens are plant-based, broad-spectrum, rich in antioxidants and cruelty-free. The company also makes an SPF scalp mist and lip balm. $10-$46, area Ulta locations, ulta.com and coola.com BEAUTY BASED Add protection on top of your makeup with Colorescience’s Sunforgettable brush-on SPF 50 sunscreen. The mineral powder comes in four skin shades and provides extra protection from air pollution and blue light. $55-$65, colorescience.com

// a day in the life DUKE’S FISHING HOLES Beardsley still maintains a ranch in the Blue River Valley, so he has spent quite a bit of time casting into that tributary of the Colorado River in search of trout. “It’s a quick day-trip from the city,” he says. “If you have a little more time, I would head south, to places like the San Juan or Animas rivers. You can’t beat the fishing or the views.”
“HANG ON. Do you hear those sucking sounds? That’s life, time and money slipping away, and fast.” Duke Beardsley heard his father, George, say this so often throughout his life, especially when they were on a river fly-fishing together.
Beardsley is a devoted fly-fisherman, which might surprise friends from his younger days: “I remember going on fly-fishing trips just south of age 10, but I was too young to appreciate it 56

“My dad was always so good at reminding everyone, including himself, that everything is fleeting and that you should do what really gets you excited to get out of bed in the morning,” says Beardsley, a sixth-generation Coloradan who grew up on a 1,000-acre cattle ranch in eastern Colorado and now calls Cherry Hills Village home. “Really grasping that concept has been such an important part of shaping what I do with my time.”
At 49, Beardsley thinks he’s gotten pretty good at keeping his priorities straight. A renowned Western painter whose works have been shown in collections such as the Denver Art Museum and Georgia’s Booth Western Art Museum, Beardsley is known largely for his depictions of landscapes and cowboys. He has another love when he is outside, though, and it comes in the form of a long, light cast on a quiet river with the hope of a solid nibble once the line grazes the water.

DUKE’S FISHING HOLES For an easy day close to home, Beardsley recommends heading to the South Platte River, where folks regularly catch large trout, along with walleye, catfish and largemouth and smallmouth bass: “I’ve been fishing all over and I was blown away when I first fished there.” Explore the different drop-in points, including South Platte Park in Littleton, at the trestle hole near Phil Milstein Park and, just south of the Florida Avenue bridge, Overland Pond Park.

rider; that’s a very real communication,” he says. “I catch so many tiny moments that I can use in my work.”
Rancher friends offer Beardsley the chance to crew on cattle roundups often, where he ends his time fly-fishing on remote waters. Here’s what it looks like when this cowboy/artist gets to do a few of his favorite things.
1-3 P.M. | THAT’S LUNCH! Just when a body can’t get any hungrier, Beardsley says, it’s time to pull the irons out of the fire so that four hours’ worth of hot coals can be used to make refried beans. Pinto beans soaked overnight with salted pork get mashed on the spot in an oversized wok, and a shovelful
4-6 A.M. | TIME TO SADDLE UP Beardsley’s good friend Duke Phillips manages four Western ranches. The two often meet at Centennial Airport the night before a day of branding to catch a ride on Phillips’ Beechcraft Bonanza to Chico Basin Ranch, 30 minutes southeast of Colorado Springs. By 5 a.m., the 30 or so wranglers working that day set out to cross about 6,000 of the ranch’s 87,000 acres, driving the herd north.
5-6 P.M. | CAST YOUR CARES AWAY After a couple of hours of cleanup, Phillips and Beardsley are itching to fish. “Bring your stick,” Phillips tells a small group of the dedicated— including Beardsley’s nephews, ages 5, 3 and 1—who head out in their shorts into the springfed pond, from which they pull bass, bluegill and carp. “We caught a lot of carp on a sixweight, using poppers,” Beardsley says. “The light was changing and Pikes Peak was this amazing backdrop. It was just some of the best 45 minutes you can have in a day.”

8 A.M.-12 P.M. | GIT ALONG, LITTLE DOGIES By about 8 a.m., everyone is where they’re supposed to be and the branding begins in earnest. Ropers brand and vaccinate, castrate and dehorn as raucous laughter mixes with a thousand lowing cattle. That’s when Beardsley pulls out his camera, taking up to 3,000 shots that he can refer to later for inspiration. “I love the physical interaction between horse and

What will the next day hold? Usually something different—but if it’s a good day, he fishes. “I’ve been really lucky and am really grateful to be able to do all of these things that make me happy,” Beardsley says. “It’s what my dad was always talking about.” Clearly, Dad knew best.

// the outdoorsman Today, he inspires other people to love the ascent. Wells is an architect of adventure: designing and selling some of the most wellknown custom rock-climbing walls and adventure parks in the world. Currently, Wells is the director of international sales and business development for Louisville-based Eldorado Climbing Walls.
was also part of the team that built the largest adventure park in the Middle East, located inside the Dubai Safari Park. It’s easy for Wells to see the benefit of his work: “Fear and anticipation fades and smiles come out when you are climbing. The beauty of the sport is that all you need to do is take that first step and you’re captivated. Climbing naturally allows you to push yourself.”
Wells has had a hand in creating Castle Rock Adventure Park, the Vail Epic Discovery Paramount Peak climbing wall, the 60,000-square-feet of outdoor climbing walls at the Boy Scouts of America’s Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia and helped hip-hop icon Joseph “Rev Run” Simmons of Run DMC install a custom rock climbing wall in his home, which was featured on the DIY Network. CLIMBING JUST CLICKED for Jerad Wells. The Colorado native, who now lives in the Denver Tech Center, was 15 years old the first time he took to great heights anchored by a belay when a buddy took him climbing at an indoor gym. From then on, “I was hooked,” Wells says. He went back to that indoor gym every single day that week. By the time he was 17, he had a few sponsors and was participating in climbing competitions, going as far as being part of the U.S. climbing team in a 1993 Sheffield, England, competition at The Foundry Climbing Centre, a legendary gym. “The thing I remember best from my years of competitive climbing was the feeling that the world is a very big place and I needed to explore much more of it,” Well says.
When he’s not creating adventure for others, Wells explores for himself. He’s an intrepid outdoorsman who spends much of his free time mountain biking and climbing. Conquering El Capitan, an iconic and especially challenging 3,000-foot granite wall in Yosemite National Park, is one of his top achievements. He also has fun taking his sons, ages 8 and 10, to indoor climbing gyms and teaching
READY TO START CLIMBING? Consider these tips from Wells your beginner’s mantra. 1. HEAD TO YOUR LOCAL CLIMBING GYM. Experts there can help teach you the basics. 2. Remind yourself that CLIMBING IS NOT AS SCARY AS YOU THINK, but know that it will definitely increase your heart rate. 3. IT’S GOOD TO BE OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE. Embrace it.

them the ropes, so to speak. “It teaches them perseverance, grit and determination,” Wells says. “They also learn critical thinking skills and problem-solving at a high level.” Wells predicts a lot more of us will want to master those same techniques soon. He has witnessed interest in climbing build around the world within the last 20 years, from rockclimbing walls becoming staples in university recreation centers to Eldorado Climbing Walls designing custom walls for people’s homes—not as gyms that are tucked away in basements, but as focal points in living spaces. The official proof that the sport is about to gain more fans: Sport climbing will make its debut in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. “Having three disciplines of climbing in the Olympics is absolutely going to put the sport we love so much on the world stage,” Wells says, referring to bouldering and speed and lead climbing. “From there, it will explode globally. I can’t wait to see that happen.”

THERE IS AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT—AND LESS CROWDED—WAY TO TAKE IN SUMMER VIEWS OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS. By Kendall Kostelic I’M NOT A MOTORCYCLIST, but Eric Gibson’s depiction of what it’s like to go on a riding tour with Lone Tree’s Colorado Motorcycle Adventures makes me want to be: “I’ve gone over mountain ranges and passes and through old towns. You’re not taking paved, highway roads to get places; you are going on Jeep trails and traveling kind of like Colorado’s gold miners. You get to see stuff you would never see from the highway.”
THE ACCOMMODATIONS. “You stay in hotels and, on hosted trips, don’t have to prepare your own food. Sometimes you stay in Hilton Garden Inn-type places and sometimes in luxe lodgings, it just depends on what is available. When you arrive at your hotel on hosted excursions, Lee’s crew will have already arrived via a van with your stuff and put your bag in your room. On my trip to Arizona, they had margaritas ready, too. Breakfast, lunch and a couple of dinners were included.”
YOUR FELLOW TRAVELERS. “The people are diverse and the friendships I’ve built have been amazing. There have been 40and 50-year-olds from all walks of life on my trips: one guy an airline pilot, another a bond trader, another an anesthesiologist.”
The Castle Pines resident has been on three memorable excursions with the company— the first to Moab, the second to the Four Corners and the third around Arizona with the company’s sister business, Arizona Motorcycle Adventures—and he’s not done yet. He and fellow motorcyclists he met on his trips “are talking about doing a custom ride from Arizona to Colorado next year,” Gibson says. I’ll leave you with the rest of his insights—I’ve got lessons to book.
BE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO RIDE. “These trips are not for beginners. If you go on the trips I’ve been on though, you also don’t have to be a great rider in my opinion. An intermediate motorcyclist with off-road experience could do it. Overall, I think anyone who has ridden a motorcycle (and, if needed, has practiced) should try these trips.”
THERE ARE TWO KINDS OF TRIPS: HOSTED … “On hosted tours, you meet with your group (which won’t go beyond 10 people) for dinner to start. On the road, you don’t have to carry your gear or luggage; you ride as a group so you don’t have to worry about getting lost or crashing without help, and when you stop you get to talk about what you’re seeing. It’s a really fun trip about camaraderie.” AND SELF-GUIDED. “To do a trip on your own, you can call up owner Scott Lee and his crew and let them know what route you are interested in. They will ask about your riding skills, what size bike and what kind of gear you need [if you don’t already have your own] and what kind of hotels you like. Then they’ll plan your trip, putting together your map and hotel reservations.”
