GREEN LIGHT

More spectacular Colorado scenery, please. JULIA ROTH—who’s behind the fascinating succulent and moss décor on pg. 23—won’t know it until she reads this (hey Julia!), but she’s found a kindred spirit. I couldn’t keep from laughing as I got to know her journey—from a hopeless aspiringgreen-thumb to a houseplant artist who uses her lack of raw gardening talent to everyone’s benefit. My outright guffaw was not just due to Roth’s comedic flair (you’ll see), but because as I electronically pen these thoughts, I sit next to the only plant my husband and I have managed to keep alive: some type of bamboo whose scientific or even common name I do not know with a verdure that has periodically coaxed us to scrutinize its leaves, convinced we have actually been watering faux greenery all this time. It’s a clichéd love-hate relationship—an attempt at love from us, and what has to be hate from the myriad of annuals, perennials and biennials that have withered away on our watch. Thank heavens that, though we’ve failed to take care of plants, plants haven’t failed to take care of us. It’s not an understatement to say Colorado’s bucolic surroundings have been a solace the last five months: Thousands of locals have been reminded why we live here. You’re in that throng: Get to know the big picture on pg. 30. Of course, all this relishing of nature has made me want to bring it inside that much more. This, at least, explains why we’re trying our horticultural luck at home once again with a Cuban oregano and snake plant (look, common names!). EX P ERI EN CED, T RU S T E D A DV I S O R .

Keep Your Eye on the Walls … OF THE LANDMARK’S INVITING MURAL SETTINGS.

WHAT DO an intricate pair of human-sized butterfly wings, a 37-foot-tall giraffe and a set of mermaid tails—one sized for adults and one for kids—have in common? Gobs of fanfare that has put The Landmark on the world traveler’s and street-art fan’s map. “I can’t tell you how many people we’ve seen from all over the place come to The Landmark

just because of Kelsey Montague’s murals,” says Retail Site Manager Corey McCartney. “My favorite visitors here specifically for the art were an Italian couple that I met up on the third floor of our building that houses Landmark Theatres, where the giraffe mural is. They actually brought their own lettuce to fake feed the giraffe.”

PHOTOS: COURTESY THE LANDMARK

By Laura Thornton

It will be two years in August since Montague, a renowned muralist and artist, finished The Landmark’s three outdoor pieces—all inviting anyone in view to pose for a picture, Montague’s calling card. And we (that includes you, lucky Landmark residents) still can’t get enough. “I would say the wings are the most popular [a signature Montague design],” McCartney says. “But it’s funny how they all have their own group followings, especially among the people who live in the two towers. … The mermaid tails [across from Pizza Republica] are next to our now-expanded patio seating, per COVID-19 guidelines. The first night we had people eating out there, about 15 of them were taking pictures by those tails.”

what it’s like to live in the area. And when you say hi to the giraffe, see if it will answer to Geoffrey. To McCartney’s jovial dismay, the complex’s retailers have named the tall guy after Geoffrey, the Toys R Us giraffe mascot: “I go, ‘no, that’s not the Toys R Us giraffe!’ and they say, ‘well, that’s the only giraffe I know!’”

The next time you’re near the wings (between Monk and Mongoose and Ted’s Montana Grill), try to notice a detail you haven’t before: The Landmark counts 11 symbols representing

At this moment, the only thing these photoready charms are missing is you.

Adds McCartney: “Personally, these murals will always remind me of the experience of being able to watch Kelsey and her family create the art. It was a family affair: Kelsey created it, her sister traced out Kelsey’s work, her father oversaw everything they needed on-site and her mom was definitely the support system. I know a lot of people don’t get that opportunity; I was so appreciative to have it.”

We typically celebrate the ultimate taste of summer on Independence Day, America’s star-spangled holiday showcasing food and drinks that shout U-S-A. Odds are good, if not obligatory, that the spread served at your picnics and cookouts—burgers, bratwursts, pork, deviled eggs— are matched with a refreshing, it-better-be-cold sip. We asked three area experts to recommend drinks to complement the dishes we’re eating this summer. Best if followed through Labor Day.

BEER “I’m always tasting beers to find what they’re missing or the direction they’re leaning,” says Denver-based certified cicerone and chef Jensen Cummings, who’s also a restaurant consultant and the founder and host of Best Served, a podcast focusing on inspiring and provocative interviews with hospitality leaders. His picks are available at local liquor stores and/or breweries. Deviled eggs: Horse & Dragon Brewing Company Fire Captain Irish Red Ale Don’t skimp on the mustard in the deviled eggs, warns Cummings. The bitterness and roasted notes of the beer, he says, “will be softened by the mayonnaise and egg, while the high citrus brightness of the hops paired with that mustard … well, you’ll see.” Planked salmon: Good River Beer Four Falls Weizenbock

“Cedar-plank smoke and dry rub—aka jerk spice—screams for the citrus and dried fruit underpinnings of a Good River Four Falls Weizenbock,” Cummings says. “The brown sugar and toasty malts will play with the spice and the fatty salmon.” Steak: Bootstrap Brewing Wreak Havoc Imperial Red When it comes to a salted and peppered steak sizzling on a really hot grill, “you’re matching intensity with intensity. The caramelized fat and maltiness set this pairing apart,” Cummings says. Vegetarian burger: Colorado Cider Company Cherry Glider “Find a rich and robust blue cheese, pile it high in your burger and pair it with the fruity tang of a Colorado Cider Cherry Glider to accentuate full-flavored savoriness and creamy mouthfeel,” advises Cummings. 15

july 2020 // AvidLifestyle

Burger: Comrade Brewing Redcon Irish Red Ale “With a sweet topping like caramelized onions, plus ketchup or relish, your burger will pop next to a Comrade Redcon, whose caramel malt undertones and piney hop profile really bring it home,” shares Cummings. Barbecued pork: Lone Tree Brewing Company Red Ale A heavily dry-rubbed pork dish finished with a little vinegar screams for Lone Tree Brewing’s Red Ale, says Cummings: “The beer’s intense toffee and fragrant woody hop character really elevates the umami depth of the hog.” Bratwurst: Avery Brewing Company White Rascal This is a flawless match, insists Cummings: “The coriander and orange peel notes amplify the mace and white pepper earthiness” of the summertime staple.

WINE Michelle Maxwell, general manager of Greenwood Village’s boutique Bouzy Wine and Spirits, stocked with world-spanning wines and local and global craft beers and spirits, maintains summer’s lighter foods lend themselves to lighter wines: Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and rosé, for example. Still, she insists that wine and food pairings, independent of season, are all about “the food you’re eating and knowing when to complement the wine—and when to contrast it.” Her recommendations are available at Bouzy. Deviled eggs: Hi! Prosecco Whip out this “bright and bubbly prosecco with green apple and citrus notes and a clean finish,” suggests Maxwell. “The effervescence and acidity will cut through the eggs’ thick texture and rich flavor.” Or Ca’ Lojera Lugana Expect “toasted nuts and ripe apple on the nose, apricot and citrus on the palate and a clean and bright finish with this white

wine,” she says. Much like the Prosecco, the “acidity and brightness will temper the creamy yolk texture.” Planked salmon: Fort Ross Winery Sea Slopes Pinot Noir This lightly structured Pinot Noir, says Maxwell, has “pronounced dark fruit flavors and a beautiful silky texture.” With medium acidity and light earthiness, it really rounds out the flavors of salmon’s oily flesh. Or Domaine Marcel Giraudon Bourgogne Chitry Rouge This $20 Burgundy isn’t a wine people typically consider, admits Maxwell, but it’s one of her personal favorites: “It has beautiful red fruit notes with a zesty acidity and subtle earth notes on the end, which makes for an ideal pairing.” Steak: Miro Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon “This wine has great minerality, plus it’s fullbodied, tannic and complex,” raves Maxwell, adding that the wine’s structure can “break through the higher fat content of beef.” 16

Or Giorgio Pelissero Langhe Nebbiolo Cherry-forward hints on the nose and palate, along with leather and tobacco, describe this stunner. Vegetarian burger: CVNE Imperial Reserva Rioja 2015 This barrel-aged Rioja is full of “velvety tannins and lots of wild berries and licorice on the nose, coupled with toffee and tobacco leaf on the palate and a long finish.” Veggie burgers typically don’t have the fat content of beef patties, so you want to match them with a wine with softer tannins, she advises: “This Rioja has been aged long enough to smooth the tannins, but not so much that the oak flavor will trounce your burger.” Or Rombauer Vineyards Carneros Chardonnay 2018 A slightly acidic summer sipper with mango and vanilla notes up front, a creamy texture and buttery flavor, “this wine, with a smooth finish, makes a veggie burger feel fuller while giving it a fresh component,” says the general manager.

LOCAL FLAVORS

Burger: Cocetti Cabernet Sauvignon A Colorado-owned product with grapes grown in California, this full-bodied cab with black fruit, balanced oak and resolved tannins definitely complements the fat content that’s inherent to a classic cheeseburger, promises Maxwell. Or Zin-Phomaniac Old Vine Zinfandel Punctuated, says Maxwell, with “great baking spices, dark fruit and smooth tannins,” the Zin-Phomaniac is bold, which pairs particularly well with a meaty patty. Barbecued pork: Chapillon Cuvée Harmonie A blend of Petit Verdot and Tannat with a dose of cocoa, blackberry and fig notes, coupled with leather and tobacco on the end, “pleasantly balances the sweetness in barbecue sauce,” she says. Or Long Shadows Sequel Syrah 2015 With pronounced notes of barbecue smoke, licorice and black pepper, this Syrah is ideal for pork with a sauce or rub that packs a spicy punch. “The juicy feel of the

wine, along with silky tannins, coats your mouth without overpowering the sauce,” explains Maxwell. Bratwurst: Martin & Anna Arndorfer Grüner Veltliner “Clean and crisp with a bright minerality and a little bit of smoke from its time on the lees,” this lovely white wine from Austria brings out the best in bratwurst. Or Dr. Loosen Red Slate Dry Riesling “Peach and citrus notes on the front and a dry finish” sums up this Riesling. “The minerality is warm, and the acidity is softened with just a touch of oxygenation,” notes Maxwell.

COCKTAILS Zach Reynolds, bar manager of Old Hampden’s Cochino Taco, loves to fire up the grill. And when he does, he opts for easy-to-prepare cocktails. “Drinks at a barbecue or picnic should favor simplicity,” he says, adding that batched cocktails are a great way to go. “And I’m a big believer that you don’t have to buy the most expensive 18

booze. While there are times to splurge, a picnic or barbecue probably isn’t one of those occasions.” Tip: For kaleidoscopic drinks, use fresh fruit purées or make your own berry lemonade. Deviled eggs: White-wine sangria “I don’t think anyone has ever paired a cocktail with deviled eggs, but a white wine sangria with fresh berries, some brandy, fruit juice, soda water and 7Up? Yep, that works!” quips Reynolds. A good sangria “will pair with anything and everything at a barbeque or picnic.” Planked salmon: Gin and tonic “Nothing screams summer like a gin and tonic,” says Reynolds. “The botanicals in the gin play really well off the fatty acids found in salmon.” If you don’t like tonic, try mixing the gin with lemonade. Steak: Mint Julep “A grilled steak deserves some good bourbon,” insists Reynolds. “This is a drink that anyone can make, plus it’s a bit upscale.” All you need to whip one up: bourbon, simple syrup,

soda water and some fresh mint sprigs. And a wide-brimmed hat. Neigh! Vegetarian burger: Vodka and lemonade “Vodka and a berry-forward [think strawberry or blueberry] lemonade is as refreshing as it gets on a hot summer day, and it’s extremely versatile,” Reynolds says. The simple and straightforward sipper has enough flavor to stand up to all of your veggie burger fixings. Burger: Watermelon margarita “I think you need a light cocktail with a burger,” muses Reynolds. Just add an ounce or two of freshly made watermelon purée to a glass of silver tequila and finish it off with a squeeze of fresh lime and splash of triple sec.

PHOTO: CHAD CHISHOLM, CUSTOM CREATIONS

Barbecued pork: Frozen Paloma “Our frozen Paloma at Cochino Taco pairs fantastically with pork— it’s a match made in heaven—and it’s pretty simple to make a pitcher of them ahead of your bash,” says Reynolds. To assemble: silver tequila, triple sec, fresh lime juice, grapefruit juice and a splash of grapefruit soda. Its crowning glory? A float of Aperol, which gives the citrus-laced cocktail a rich and vibrant reddish-orange hue. “You don’t have to use Aperol, but it does add another level of flavor while minimizing the sweetness,” notes the bartender. Bratwurst: Blue Hawaiian Bratwursts united with a Blue Hawaiian—rum, pineapple juice and splashes of blue Curaçao and coconut cream—might strike some as a “surprising pairing,” admits Reynolds. “But the sweetness of the pineapple juice works perfectly with the fat in the bratwurst. The blue Curaçao really does create a gorgeous blue hue, but a little goes a long way. Drinking too much of that stuff in the sun will make you live to regret it.” You’ve been warned.

BLACK-THUMBED JULIA ROTH IS KILLING IT WITH SUCCULENT AND MOSS CUSTOM CREATIONS By Dahlia Jean Weinstein

“I bought a money tree. It’s dying. It’s supposed to be the best plant to buy and not kill. But give it to me, and it will die tomorrow,” continues the Greenwood Village resident, who locals also know through her fitness business, DTC Pilates. “I was the woman who bought a fiddleleaf fig plant because it was ‘cool’ and ‘in’ and ‘everybody had one.’ It started dying, so I read more about it. It needs sun, but not too much. It also needs water, but not too much. Do you have a humidifier? Place it next to the plant. I thought, are you kidding me?” And that was it: After this final desperate attempt more than four years ago to grow a green thumb, Roth’s helpless digits reached their horticultural breaking point. But then, soon after: “I was in the cigar shop in my husband’s bar [The Robusto Room, now closed] looking at all the cigar boxes thinking, ‘some of these are really pretty,’” she says. Roth took home a few boxes unsure of what exactly she would do with them.

PHOTO: ORLOVA MARIA ON UNSPLASH

Her daughter had a school craft project due around the same time, and a trip to Michaels for supplies lit a creative spark. “I saw the succulents and thought some of them looked plastic, but others I couldn’t tell if they were real or fake,” Roth remembers. “They were beautiful.” So, she took some home and arranged them in those empty cigar boxes. A friend saw the end result and asked to use them to stage her home, which was up for sale. When Roth asked for the arrangements back, the friend politely refused. “No, I really like them, and people really liked them when they came to my house,” her friend said. It was then Roth realized her unlikely craft could become a budding business. (Pun intended.)

PHOTO: COURTESY JULIA ROTH

“I KILL EVERYTHING,” says Julia Roth as she relays her botanical horror stories to me.

It’s been almost two years since she officially started selling her custom designs—ranging from 10-inch square works of art to two-frame installations measuring 29 inches high, 25.5 inches wide and 4.5 inches thick. The exciting splays of succulents, moss and even thinly sliced tree bark are enclosed in custom wood frames forged by Roth and her husband, Peter, in the professional woodworking shop Peter built in their home. Much of Roth’s process has stayed the same since day one: Roth makes the décor sustainable by continuing to incorporate cigar boxes and repurposes fine woods, such as African redwood, walnut and zebrawood, into those frames. And after extensive personal testing, she overcame her original killer instincts and even creates many of her designs with live, preserved, nonvascular plants like reindeer and sheet moss: “The moss won’t lose its color, it’s vibrant and green and I love the fact that it can’t die. If I can’t kill it, it’s not going to die.”

DWELLING WELL

6 WAYS FOR YOU AND YOUR PUP TO GAIN A NEW LEASH ON LIFE By Brittany Anas OVER THE LAST few months, dogs have sensed their humans being home much more than usual. In turn, humans may have noticed that their four-legged friends could stand to brush up on some obedience training. Or perhaps you have a dog that’s a tad stir-crazy, and you’re looking for fun new ways to entertain him or her—so they’ll zonk out for an afternoon nap. Ahead, local experts offer ways to improve your pet’s behavior and have more fun together.

School is in session Whether you adopted a “pandemic puppy” that’s headed to obedience school for structured training or you have a dog with some long-term behavioral issues that need addressing, it’s important to practice consistency with dos and

don’ts at home, says Dan McCarthy, owner and head trainer of Centennial-based Triumphant Canine Dog Training: “In general, you can’t apply human emotions to dog training.” Instead, think like your pet. PREVENT SEPARATION ANXIETY As you’ve been home more, you may have noticed your dog becoming hyper-attached and experiencing separation anxiety every time you grab the keys to make a grocery run: Shivering or shaking when you’re preparing to leave, closely following you around the home, chewing up a rug while you’re gone, barking and having accidents are among the common signs of separation anxiety. When you’re at home, it’s important to continue to leave the house without your pup for short periods throughout the day, so they remain accustomed to being apart, McCarthy says. And don’t make leaving or returning a big deal. DON’T BEND THE RULES If you want your dog to stay off a couch or steer clear of your home office, make sure everyone in your household is consistently enforcing that rule, rather than making exceptions here and there. “For a dog, once means always,” McCarthy says. If they’re cuddled with you on the couch for one movie night, you’ll have a hard time getting them to stay off the furniture in the future. REWARD YOUR DOG FOR GOOD BEHAVIOR Say you’re training a puppy who mistakes your slipper for a toy and starts chewing on it. Where many pet owners go wrong is chasing the puppy, who then runs off, McCarthy says. The better solution is to get on your hands and knees and use a high-pitched voice to get your dog to come to you. And when they do, they should get a treat. “Knowing they’ll be rewarded when they come to you is good motivation [to always come when you ask],” he says. MEET THE NEIGHBORS

Some of the good boys and girls you just might see CHERRY CREEK PAMPERED PETS trotting around the south suburbs.

“A tired dog is a happy dog,” says Corinne Gearhart, founder of Cherry Creek Pampered Pets, a Greenwood Village-based dog walking and pet sitting company that specializes in “shed-free” boarding for non- and very-lowshedding dog breeds. Her boredom-buster strategies will mentally stimulate your pets, while also tiring them out. SOLVE FOOD PUZZLES Handing out special treats, like nibbles of cheese, by way of a food puzzle activates your pup’s foraging senses. For the uninitiated, food puzzles are challenging toys your pup needs to paw at, nibble or roll in order to shake loose the goodies. Two untraditional ideas: freeze yogurt or peanut butter in a Kong toy or make regular use of a snuffle mat, a popular plaything with fabric strands attached to a backing that, when filled with hidden chow, mimics searching for food in the wild. “Save these goodies for when you need some quiet time,” Gearhart advises. TURN WALKS INTO SCAVENGER HUNTS Mix up your walking routine from time to time: “Dogs love the new stimulation,” says Gearhart. When socializing a new puppy, thinking of walks as treasure hunts, she says, will put the focus on exposing your pet to new people, places and things—which will help them to not be fearful in the future.

It took a worldwide pandemic to make us truly appreciate the great outdoors. By Dahlia Jean Weinstein

Call

IN HIS 1836 essay, Nature, Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote: “In the presence of nature, a wild delight runs through the man, in spite of real sorrows.” I was reminded of this quote on my first hike after Colorado’s stay-at-home orders were lessened. Normal social greetings were nearly nonexistent as mask-wearing hikers made every effort to stay six feet away from each other. The scene was unnatural and surreal. I sensed however, even through the awkwardness, that we all felt incredibly grateful to finally be back on the trail in light of—and in spite of—the sadness and fear so many people felt during the initial COVID-19 lockdowns. Some say being active outdoors is almost mandatory to maintain residency in Colorado. But it wasn’t until being confined to our homes for such a long period of time that most of us wholeheartedly craved to be in the sun and participate in any activity that could keep us there a while. » 31

The pull of Mother Nature could no longer be ignored. “During the quarantine, everybody just wanted to get outside. It’s who we are as Coloradans,” says Chelsey Christy, who together with her husband, Jonathan Messinger, are fly-fishing wade guides for Colorado Trout Hunters. You probably know a neighbor who’s cast a line with the couple, if you haven’t yourself, who also lead fly-fishing trips for Minturn Anglers. They stopped guiding during the lockdown, but still had to fish—as did, apparently, everybody else. “The rivers had weekend crowds [who tried to remain socially distanced], but all week long,” says Christy. Adds Messinger: “It was almost out of control. It looked like it was the Fourth of July, and was more crowded than it normally is all season.”

The only word to describe what outdoor recreation experts have experienced since March is also the descriptor for COVID-19 itself: unprecedented. »

“We’re trying to triage bikes at this point,” explains Erik Swanson, owner of Aurora’s Adventure Cycling, where requests for service on pre-owned bikes spiked as dramatically as bike sales (for south suburbanites and others)—both surging to never-before-seen levels. “A lot of people just wanted to get out and ride. They’re not racing in the Tour de France next year. They just want to ride bikes with their kids.” From mountain and road to hybrid and electric bikes, Swanson’s shop has them all—normally. Early in the pandemic, Swanson and his team “had a ton of people come in and say, ‘Now that the gyms are closed…,’ or ‘I can’t run anymore, I want to buy a bike.’” He was still navigating the difficulties of getting new bikes in-store in June: “As soon as we get bikes in, we have them on the floor for about an hour before they’re gone.”

Hikers already know that tremendous usage spikes were also afoot on local trails and in visits to state parks. An example: Colorado Parks and Wildlife guest logs show that Chatfield State Park had in excess of 44,000 more trekkers in April this year, during the height of stay-at-home, than the same month last year. And Cherry Creek State Park? It saw a roughly 65,000-person bump in parkgoers in April of this year compared to last year. “Many parks are saying midweek traffic has rivaled prior-year July Fourth traffic,” says Colorado Parks and Wildlife Statewide Public Information Officer Bridget Kochel. »

Closer to home, “the High Line Canal has proven to be essential during this pandemic,” says Suzanna Fry Jones, director of marketing and community outreach for the High Line Canal Conservancy. “We have testimonies from Conservancy supporters and trail users of their appreciation and love for the canal being greater than ever.” No one has been able to get enough of golf either: “Our golf courses opened on Saturday, April 18, and all four courses have been at capacity ever since,“ says Becky Grubb, communications manager for South Suburban Parks and Recreation.

PHOTO: SERENA STEPHENS

After receiving 30 fly-fishing trip cancellations in April, Christy and Messinger were finally able to get back to wade guiding in early May. Long-time clients and new fly-fishing enthusiasts alike were lining up: “The cool thing about fly-fishing is it already follows the ‘social distancing’ guidelines,” says Messinger. “Just by having fisherman’s etiquette—which is basically, ‘Hey, don’t fish next to me. This is my spot.’—social distancing is built in.” » 36

“Guidelines” have been everyone’s biggest hurdle when it comes to outdoor activities. “It is hard to navigate the constantly changing landscape right now,” says Grubb. “To help our residents, we created a site that lists all of our openings and current regulations.” Says Jones: “Almost immediately, the Conservancy placed signs along the High Line Canal to encourage social distancing; trail users will see updated signs in high traffic areas. We also continue to educate trail users with a comprehensive COVID-19 information page on our website, as well as social media posts.” The day this story was filed, Colorado Parks and Wildlife announced all campgrounds— including cabins, yurts and camping for groups of 10 or fewer, as well as State Wildlife Areas (SWAs)—were open. The only exceptions being in counties with remaining health orders or areas remaining closed by county request.

Throughout COVID’s uncertainty, something has remained constant: a great revival of our love for the outdoors. It’s been a wild delight in a time of sorrow.

There’s home design, and then there’s Home Design. “I don’t think people realize the psychological power that design can have on them,” says Gina D’Amore Bauerle of D’Amore Interiors. “There are so many subconscious things that happen when you’re around a design that makes you feel good.” You know the instinct—it’s the one that decided your favorite quarantine home hangout. We interviewed local designers on key areas that work, and sussed out the reasons why homeowners love them so much. Call it a new kind of happy hour. By Kathryn O’Shea-Evans & Kendall Kostelic

Living It Up

À La Alfresco Man’s need for fire is as primal as it gets: gathering around dancing flames has, for centuries, buoyed conversation into the wee hours. So it’s no surprise a gas fireplace takes center stage for the homeowners of this patio, part of a modernist home in Highlands Ranch’s BackCountry, bordering Cherokee Ranch and Castle land. What better place to gather round with a glass of your favorite tipple for an evening of storytelling?

LET THERE BE LIGHT Soft, warm outdoor lighting sets a magical mood that sprinkles every evening in proverbial fairydust. The varied heights of sconces on the outdoor walls and garden paths look a bit like fireflies; encouraging the eye to wander the skyline of the space, while still flitting both high and low.

MATCHY-MATCHY The unified hues are extra pleasing to the homeowners’ eyes, even when it comes to the flora. “When designing, I like to keep with a simple plant palette that matches with the architecture of the home and its surrounding area,” Ruppert says. “Don’t force anything!”

The homeowners made their outdoor haven complete with a sculptural duo of chairs and a sofa from Vondom to flank the sleek firepit. The furniture echoes the contemporary home’s asymmetrical lines and provides prime perches for relaxing. “The homeowners did a wonderful job with the furniture selection, along with subtle accents in color [such as throw pillows] that worked with the landscape,” Ruppert says. “They’re all about fun and enjoying the outdoors. The furniture suits them and their personality, as well as the patio. It’s very organic!” Edging the perimeter of the lot’s footprint: a court that’s set up for basketball and other sports. “The homeowners wanted to keep things simple, which works well with landscape,” Ruppert says. “The ball court is recessed below a gabion rock wall and is encompassed with native grass and trees.” Having it there is like leaving a deck of cards on the coffee table—it encourages both the family and their guests to have fun and a sense of play. In a place where the Front Range meets the plains, being able to enjoy the simple pleasure of taking in the surrounding panorama was a big item on the wish list for these locals. This challenged the outdoor space’s designer, Joshua Ruppert of Denver-based landscape architecture and design firm Lifescape Colorado, to let nature speak for itself. “Sometimes less is more,” the designer says, adding that the house was rotated and raised on the lot to capture the best views. “Everything should have a purpose.”

EARTHY ELEGANCE To suit the terrain and give the homeowners a mostly fuss-free garden they could feel easy in, Ruppert selected regional plants like aspen trees, Rocky Mountain sumac, rabbitbrush and leadplant. “We peppered them along with the native grass and wildflowers,” he says. “The idea was to blend the back portion of the yard with what was already there.”

44

july 2020 // AvidLifestyle

BEAUTIFUL BALANCE Placing furniture and accessories symmetrically is a timeless tactic that’s inherently pleasing and calming to the eye (partly because humans are mostly symmetrical themselves)—something these homeowners can tell you all about.

EYE CANDY Choosing a restrained, streamlined firepit draws the homeowners’ eyes to the flickering flames themselves, making them the star of the show. This particular sleek, American-made firepit was hewn of glassfiber-reinforced concrete from Denverbased Nisho.

TEXTURAL TREAT Even patio flooring can be pretty enough to bring joy to those who use it. Underfoot in this sitting space, Ruppert created a graphic base where parallel lines juxtapose against earthy stones in varying shades of gray. “I liked the contrast with the raw concrete and Mexican beach pebbles,” he says. “The pebbles helped give a softness to the area.”

45

july 2020 // AvidLifestyle

HARDWARE HIGHLIGHTS The complementary hardware pieces tie the space together, so it all jibes. “Cabinet hardware selection is so important, and is really the ‘jewelry’ of the kitchen,” Ekle says. “We chose a more simplistic pull” that could be spotlighted in multiple sizes.

TOP NOTCH Ekle opted for contrasting finishes on the countertops and island, a move that adds instant dimension to the space and allows the homeowners flexibility. “The island is a beautiful, dramatic granite because this is where they work, eat and entertain and we wanted it to really have a WOW factor,” Ekle says. Conversely, the counter ringing the wall is made of hard-wearing quartz, which can handle the homeowners’ tougher meal prep and projects. “I like to use quartz because it is man-made and therefore much more durable than natural stone—scratch resistant, stain resistant and antimicrobial,” the designer says.

SITTING PRETTY In a world where backsplashes can be made of anything, from slate to mirror, Ekle surprised the homeowners with an eternally pretty finish: marble mosaic. “We pulled out the beautiful gray, white and taupe tones from the island, and carried it all up the backsplash and back wall to draw your eye up and accentuate the tall ceilings,” she explains.

COLORS FOR KEEPS The Benjamin Moore paint colors have certainly served the homeowners well in all the recent time at home: Ekle went for hues that would stand the test of time, so the homeowners wouldn’t get sick of them. “For the kitchen, we wanted something neutral but warm, so we selected Coventry Gray, a light gray color with a slight blue undertone that adds a little richness to the space.” Kendall Charcoal makes the dining nook feel luxe and moody.

46

july 2020 // AvidLifestyle

HIDDEN HOT SPOT The kitchen drawers follow the latest trend in kitchen design: concealing appliances and generally hiding the eyesores from the homeowners’ field of vision. Says Ekle: “The tucked microwave drawer in the corner of the kitchen under the window is the favorite feature of the room. The homeowner uses it throughout the day to heat up her coffee and says that it’s so nice to have the microwave not in clear sight!” Another bonus: more countertop space.

Kitchen Confidential

PHOTOS: EMILY MINTON REDFIELD, COURTESY C2DESIGN

It’s not easy to merge timelessness with modernity, but the results can be as comforting to home cooks as a kitchen in a Nancy Meyers movie. So is the case with the homeowners now basking in this Greenwood Village cook space designed by Corinne Ekle, owner of Greenwood Village’s c2Design. Built by John Reither of Castle Rock’s Reither Construction, Inc., it combines the classic (sky-high cabinetry trimmed with crown molding) with the cutting edge (pendant lights that appear to float dreamily, almost like blown bubbles, above the island). And while the kitchen is as worthy of a magazine spread as any, the look goes way beyond beauty: the space is newly functional, thanks to some layout swaps that would satisfy any Julia Child-level chef but, most importantly, send the homeowners over the moon. “We completely reconfigured the layout and changed the way the homeowners work and live in this kitchen space,” Ekle says. One prime example: they moved the sink, formerly tucked away in a corner, to center stage by placing it in the middle of the island, making it easy for the homeowners to navigate from all angles. Another exchange: “We moved the cooktop, in the island previously, to the back wall to create a focal point with the hood,” explains the designer. “And we moved the refrigerator, from where the bar is now located, to the angled wall.” It all makes for a flowing, cozy cook space where the residents can live the dream—i.e., whip up meals easily. One of the spots they host guests is in the showstopping dining nook, where a round dining table encourages conversation and a boxed beam ceiling imparts the feel of a storied hunting lodge overhead. The abundance of blonde woods throughout says “cabin cool,” especially in Colorado. C2DESIGN 720.457.1600; c2designinteriors.com

BEHIND THE SCENES Another big secret: “The refrigerator is ‘panel ready,’ meaning that we have a panel made to look the same as the cabinetry so it can be hidden,” Ekle says. “The freezer drawers are also tucked into the island out of sight, which comes in handy for late-night ice cream snacking.”

DINING DELIGHT Hanging something that casts a romantic glow over a dinner table was a must—there is nothing like soft, warm lighting to set a mood. A globe chandelier marries the aesthetic appeal of a historic, kinetic form with a metallic finish Chip and Joanna Gaines would approve of.

Master of Rest Janet Wettlaufer is among friends when she unwinds in her master bedroom—a posse of contemporary (but not minimal) design details with a sassy streak that prove a confidante can come in all shapes, sizes and expanses of square footage. “This is the most private room for me in the condo—where I have that sense of privacy and the freedom to feel whatever I’m feeling,” Wettlaufer says. Like her relationship with her interior designer, Gina D’Amore Bauerle of D’Amore Interiors (she’s also known as Design Boss Gina), you could say the friendship was a dozen years in the making. “Janet hired me 12 years ago to do her first condo in this building,” D’Amore Bauerle says. “And we’ve stayed friends ever since.” So, who better to make Wettlaufer’s new home (as of a year ago) in Vallagio at Inverness—shared with her significant other, Larry Wettlaufer—a physical representation of her vibrant look on life? One not-so-secret ingredient: Wettlaufer’s signature color (you guessed it: red), brought to life even more with a Maya Romanoff “vinyl wallpaper made to look like leather,” says the interior designer. “And then there’s this subtle shading in it that almost looks like a tiger print.” Furnishings from Wettlaufer’s previous condo a few floors down, picked out by D’Amore Bauerle and Wettlaufer 12 years back, dot the home. In the master bedroom, one such piece shares the stage with unconventional furniture, like a standout sideboard used in place of a traditional dresser. All in all, should you need Wettlaufer or her second half, who also spend time in Minnesota and Arizona each year, “we are happily ensconced in this flat.” D’AMORE INTERIORS 303.422.8704; damoreinteriors.com

PHOTOS: TIMOTHY GORMLEY, COURTESY D’AMORE INTERIORS

WINDOW FOR THE SOUL “We really like to travel and like the theater,” Wettlaufer says. “Years ago, I was at an art museum and there was a Toulouse-Lautrec exhibit, where I just bought a couple posters on the way out. I have carried those around with me for forever”—since before she met D’Amore Bauerle, to be exact. “I look at them, one about theater and the other about a singer, and think about the whole backstory of being in Paris in the 1890s, and I can almost imagine myself in those days.”

MEMORY LANE “On this little red tray, I have pictures of my family and my book of heart stones: I love heart rocks,” Wettlaufer says. “Our whole family is always on the lookout for them—especially when we are on the Minnesota side of Lake Superior, where there are beaches full of rocks.”

WHERE DREAMS ARE SWEET What is a master bedroom without a plush place to lay your head? Not much, and certainly not any sleeping quarters D’Amore Bauerle or Wettlaufer want to be in—which is one of the reasons D’Amore Bauerle chose an upholstered frame. “It’s literally softer and more luxurious,” she says.

48

july 2020 // AvidLifestyle

LIGHT FANTASTIC Wettlaufer never would have chosen the Troy Lighting chandelier to hang over the sleeping space, but, as good friends do, trusted D’Amore Bauerle’s intuition: “Gina says lighting is the frosting on the cake for everything. With this fabulous chandelier, I kind of feel like a princess.”

BLACK, WHITE AND RED ALL OVER “The color creates the mood,” D’Amore Bauerle says. “I have always loved and will continue to love the black and white concept because it’s a perfect example of two completely opposite things peacefully coexisting, but it still has so much room for interpretation. One of the things I love about it is how it makes other colors look—the combination really makes Janet’s red stand out.”

WAKE-UP CALL First thing in the morning, Wettlaufer opens the Fabricut drapes—made of fabric that looks like fringed strips of cut newspaper, D’Amore Bauerle says—and looks out over the condo building’s roundabout, “which has beautiful trees. It’s just a great way to start the day. … The shades were one of the splurges; they have this great texture.”

49

july 2020 // AvidLifestyle

GREAT ESCAPE D’Amore Bauerle placed this American Leather chair in the master bedroom instead of the living room—where the seat resided in Wettlaufer’s first condo—to give Wettlaufer a place to have time to herself. “I have a sense of really being at peace,” Wettlaufer says. “This is where I can come and sit and read, have a glass of wine and watch the news and more.”

HANDMADE leather baby shoes. Hair bows. Crib sheets. A set of adorable outfits for a baby girl. This is the list that put the Henderson girls—Ava, Elliott and Collins—on the style influencer map. In 2014, when Elliott, 6 years old today, was just a baby and Collins hadn’t yet grown the Castle Pines transplants to a family of five, Mom—Melissa Henderson—tried her luck at winning baby supplies in giveaways becoming popular on Instagram. The photos she entered of Elliott won them those items right off the bat, and Henderson realized the family had stumbled onto something good. Now more than 30,000 followers strong (across multiple accounts), the goal to become social media savvy has changed into something much more far-reaching: Followers look to them for styling and shopping advice, Henderson says. And through relationships with coveted children’s boutiques, including one of their

own, Henderson and the girls are having a ton of fun giving it to them: “They love being in front of the camera; although Ava, my oldest, likes to be behind the scenes.” As Henderson styles, the girls watch and learn. “I’m really into being bold and mixing patterns. Leopard is a neutral,” she says. “I run an Instagram account for flat-lays. The girls watch me lay out those outfits, then I go to their rooms and they have their outfits laid out like they’ve seen me do.” The Hendersons are currently sharing their life across five Instagram accounts, each with a different focus. The largest account, with more than 20,000 fans, is connected to a popular place where Henderson takes the girls’ style 52

into her own hands: “After our first account got going, I started a shop called Mimi Makes where I make and sell bows and headbands.” Temporarily put on hold when COVID-19 hit, the shop reopened in June. Still, behind the whimsical getups is a powerful, 21st-century message Henderson hopes to convey well—especially as it relates to Collins, whose loveable sass comes through crystalclear on camera: “I hope people know that we’re all the same. It’s easy to get caught up in this perfect facade on Instagram, but we’re all going through struggles. This outlet has been my sanity through COVID. I work at Boutique Dance Academy, where Ava and Elliott dance competitively, and before COVID, Collins was basically living there. Everyone got to be part of her life. She’s changed so much since March, and the only way our dance community was able to experience that was through our photos.”

THIS ARTIST FINDS BEAUTY IN THE HUMAN FORM AND A GOOD SENSE OF STYLE.

Drawn By Suzanne S. Brown

AT FIRST GLANCE, Susan Frank’s art isn’t easy to pin down. Her subjects are as likely to be birds and flowers as they are figures inspired by favorite fashion designers and pure imagination. But then you visit with the Lone Tree artist and illustrator, and a common thread appears in her seemingly disparate themes. “Being outside, in nature, makes me feel comfortable and happy,” Frank says. Inside, she finds that same joy when she’s inspired by clothes—from such designers as Carolina Herrera and Christian Dior. “Fashion is a great place to get lost in creating. It’s a very personal thing,” Frank says. Style has long been an interest to Frank, who grew up in three states—Colorado, Michigan and New York—before traveling to a few more and then settling in Colorado. As a child, when she didn’t like the clothes worn by her dolls, she created new ones on a pint-sized Singer sewing machine using scraps of calico and other quilting fabric her grandmother gave her. Frank loved draping the material and stitching seams, creating new worlds for her dolls. It wasn’t long before she started designing her own clothes.

The artist’s knowledge of fashion history informs her fashion illustrations, and like so many other style creators, she uses mood boards to spark an idea. “Fashion illustration is a more exaggerated version of reality and there’s room for experimentation,” she says.

to Fashion “If you look at a lot of illustrators, it isn’t as much about a long, slender figure as it is designing for all sorts of body shapes and finding an interesting or even humorous way of presenting design.”

The bliss Frank finds for herself in the topic creates a consistent mood of optimism in her work: “I like cheerful, upbeat things. It has to do with the colors I use”—hues like bubbly pinks and sunny yellows, soothing blues and greens. Her illustrative luminaries are such Art Deco masters as Erté and Georges Lepape, as well as the contemporary style of Mats Gustafson and David Downton. If all goes well, Frank could become an inspiration herself before fall hits. As of press time, Frank, who studied at the Glassell School of Art in Houston as well as the Art Students League of Denver—focusing on watercolor and design, pastel and plein air landscape painting—is set to teach a class on fashion illustration at the Curtis Center for the Arts in September. She’ll show students how to create the classic “croquis” fashion template illustrators use. Frank’s full-time job is to review contracts and do accounting for a software developer, but her light-filled home studio is where she turns for self-expression. “It’s always been something I do on the side,” she says. “I’ve tried giving up art, but it’s a physical need for me.” 55

// inside story

Face First Metro businesses and fashion designers have been hard at work creating face coverings that are protective, but still allow personality and style to shine through. For many of them, COVID-19 has been both a challenge and a breakthrough as they work to stitch the community back together. Here’s how four such fashioners are making a statement—and a difference—this summer.

WINTER SESSION Roy Katz and Tanya Fleisher, the husbandwife team behind Denver-based Winter Session, are known for their handcrafted canvas and leather goods. But now those designs are sharing the spotlight with a new product: reusable face masks, which have shipped across the world. “We realized our warehouse could be set up safely, and we had rolls of fabric just sitting here, plus the capabilities to produce masks on a short timeline,” Fleisher says. “We also started a nonprofit called Cover Up Colorado, where we donate one mask for every mask sold to frontline health care workers, homeless shelters and other vulnerable populations. The masks are sleek and adjustable. They’re made of tightly woven cotton fabric with a metal nose piece inside and a pocket for a filter—each order comes with a few.” winter-session.com

By Laurel Thompson

JASMINE LEWIS When it comes to unique style details, Denver Tech Center-based fashion designer Jasmine Lewis is always full of ideas: “My style is very ‘avant-garde meets ready-to-wear,’ so I created a unique metal nose piece on the outside of my masks as a way of adding my aesthetic—it’s sort of like jewelry. My masks are made of 100 percent cotton. You choose the style, the type of strap and whether you want the visible nose piece. They also have a pocket for a filter, though I don’t provide those because I don’t want to take away material that could be used for real medical masks.” jasminelewisdesign.com

DARDANO’S Four generations’ worth of experience and some maneuvering helped Dardano’s— a family-owned and operated shop that offers shoe repair and comfort footwear to area residents— tackle COVID’s challenges. “We shut down for a week and a half when the stay-at-home order went into effect, so we started thinking of ways to keep our people employed,” says Vice President Dillon Dardano. “My mom owned a custom window treatment business until she retired five years ago: She had material, equipment and space we could use to create double-layered cotton masks. Elastic was very hard to come by, so we used drawstrings from shoes. For a while we were purchasing shoelace kits, then we found a New York manufacturer that sells bulk elastic. Our masks are handmade by Dardano’s employees, and we have more than 40 colors and patterns.” 303.692.9355, dardanos.com

OLA CRÉ Ola Cré owner Rachel Riedel has dedicated her life to educating people on safe skin-care. So when the danger of COVID-19 became apparent, the Denver native found other ways to help prevent toxins from getting in our bodies: “I created and sold 130 face masks in the first six days. I sent them all over—to Afghanistan, New York, California, New Orleans.” Locally, Riedel’s masks are available at farmer’s markets in Parker and Castle Rock; Keller Williams Realty DTC, whose wellness team she’s worked with for the past two years, can also recommend her skin-care expertise. “I have a lot of different mask designs, and everything is made from scratch,” Riedel continues. “The masks are made to fit snugly, so there is no need for a piece of metal inside.” Order on Facebook and Instagram: @olacreskin.

JACKIE MILLET knew there would be challenges when she began her second term as mayor of the City of Lone Tree, but like all of us, never expected a global pandemic to be one of them. “It was March 16 when my whole world changed. Essentially, everything came to a stop that day in Lone Tree,” Millet says. Everything, of course, except Mayor Millet (it rhymes with “ballet”). This is not the first time Millet has waded through office waters amid an unwelcome crisis. “I began getting involved in the city in 2008 in the middle of the Great Recession. We really had to hit the ground running back then. That was a good training ground for this, at least in terms of the financial impact,” she says. So, at the cusp of her second term, Millet stood nonplussed by the difficulties ahead and got right back to work—armed with the know-how that made her a great fit for the job in the first place. An engineer by profession and problem solver by nature, Millet was drawn initially to city government to work on Lone Tree’s planning commission. After eight years on city council and four years as mayor, she was sworn in for her second four-year mayoral term in May—during a virtual Zoom meeting.

“I have the privilege of welcoming 10,000 Lone Tree guests to our annual Independence Day Celebration. We have quite a party every year and it is a well-loved tradition in our community. Unfortunately, this year’s celebration became another casualty of COVID-19.” What are you reading this summer? “The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything by James Martin, SJ—given these turbulent times I very much appreciate the focus on spirituality.”

ONE OF THE FAMILY “My family says that Lone Tree is my third child. I really feel so blessed that we could put down roots here,” she says. Millet moved to Lone Tree when her children, now in their early 20s, were 2 and 4½ years old. But it wasn’t until the pandemic shutdown, when the kids returned home from college, that they saw the care that went into governing their 25-year-old sibling.

“I was working at home, too,” Millet says. “I had some tough personal conversations with city employees and business owners coping with COVID who were trying to figure out when it was safe to go back to work. I don’t think my kids realized until now the full weight of what I do.” OVERSEEING A RAPIDLY TRANSFORMING CITY HAS BEEN AN ACCOMPLISHMENT Lone Tree has made impressive strides, Millet says. Not that long ago, the city was unknown to most residents in the Denver metro area. “Then Lone Tree became known for Park Meadows or offices on I-25 with employment opportunities,” she says. “Now, we have our own identity. … We’re proud of the companies that have chosen to locate or expand here.” Millet has also watched her home grow through her strong focus on transportation planning: “We now have a robust multimodal system with three stops on the RTD Southeast Rail Extension. We also invested in the expansion of E-470. And the system of bike and pedestrian paths continues to expand.” 60

What are your favorite takeout cuisines and dishes? “I love the array of dining and takeout options in Lone Tree, so it’s hard to pick! However, since I love Indian food and sushi—and find them challenging to make at home—I’d say those are my favorite takeout orders. I also enjoy a beautiful grilled piece of salmon.” What’s your favorite Colorado summer destination (outside Lone Tree)? “We head to the mountains to hike during the summer. Steamboat Springs and Telluride are favorite spots. There are some beautiful places in Douglas County for day hikes, too.” What is your favorite form of chocolate? “Salted dark chocolate caramels—yummy!”

of pride. She notes the Lone Tree Arts Center’s nationally recognized programs and the notable preservation of Schweiger Ranch, which now includes Tall Tales Ranch, a working ranch for adults with developmental disabilities. As a mom, Millet also touts the Teen Court program, which diverts first-time teen offenders and leaves them without a court record. “When I was growing up, the judicial system was more forgiving of teens who did something stupid,” she says.

PHOTO: COURTESY CITY OF LONE TREE

MILLET’S SECRET WEAPONS TO GETTING HERE The mayor attributes any success she has had to the efforts of the Lone Tree city staff: “We have an assembly of the most talented and productive people in the city’s history.” Another key resource is her enthusiastic willingness to sit through long hours of meetings in her leadership roles with the Denver Regional

Council of Governments and other organizations. It’s all about being in the right place at the right time: “My involvement with these organizations at least puts Lone Tree at the table when decisions are being made,” she explains. “If I’m there, I can advocate for the city—as we’ve seen, problems don’t begin or end at any border.” Economic development was always at the top of Millet’s agenda, but it’s not the only point

MOVING FORWARD “We will more than double the population gradually over the next quarter century as the east side of town develops,” Millet says. For the mayor, one of the surest signs that Lone Tree has matured thus far as a city is the deep level of community involvement: “There are hundreds of volunteers who make all the commissions, programs and organizations work. It’s humbling.” Planning for the future of those organizations, programs and more hasn’t stopped despite COVID-19. “I got a note thanking me for making sure everyone wore masks. I got another note telling me that I’m the stupidest mayor ever—and worse—for requiring masks in public places,” Millet says. “No matter what, my north star has always been fact-based decision making. We may have more virtual ribbon cuttings for a while, but I’m confident we’ll navigate the next few years in good shape.”

A STREAK OF UNEXPECTED LUCK IN CINQUE TERRE “This photo was taken on my wife and I’s first day on a trip to Cinque Terre. Cinque Terre comprises five Italian villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. We took the train to Riomaggiore to catch a sunset cruise we had booked. Unfortunately, the cruise was cancelled due to choppy water conditions, but we took advantage of the views around us. Later, as luck would have it, we found a willing sailor in Vernazza to take us on our own private cruise.” –Jamie Schwaberow

RELISHING TRANQUILITY IN HẠLONG BAY “I took my father to Vietnam to retrace his steps from the time he was an A-6 fighter pilot in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He had never been on the ground. This was his first (and only) time back to the country since the 1970s. This small floating village in Halong Bay, only accessible by small, hand-paddled boats, farms pearl oysters. Halong Bay is an Unesco World Heritage site, and home to some 1,600 limestone monolithic islands. The absolute stillness and quiet was a stark contrast to the chaos of war my father had previously experienced in the exact same location.” –Chad Chisholm PHOTO: EHREN JOSEPH

SAVING LIVES IN KENYA

PHOTO: E.J. CARR

“I was on assignment in East Africa in 2010 documenting the great work Richard and Katy Leakey were doing to provide relief to a community of Maasai who had been severely impacted by drought. For the Maasai, cattle provide meat and milk, but after the drought their herds died and the search for sustenance was acute. The Maasai used to move herds from one place to another so grass had a chance to grow. However, most of what was Maasai land has been seized. … Sadly, this sounds all too familiar. Climate change is having a severe impact on indigenous communities. There is no Planet B, but there are a host of aboriginal communities who can teach us best practices for land preservation.” –Ehren Joseph

WHERE’S WALDO CHARLIE CHAPLIN IN WATERVILLE “This was taken on a day trip from my home in Ireland, where I lived for three years. Waterville, on the Iveragh Peninsula, is home to a renowned golf destination, Waterville Golf Links. Every year I was in Ireland, I would play golf at Waterville on my birthday. The village took a back seat to golf, although as this image proves, undeservedly. The day I took this I was searching out the village’s statue of Charlie Chaplin. The rainbow of color overtook me as I approached the village. … I didn’t get a photo of Charlie Chaplin.” –E.J. Carr 64
