FANCIER THAT!
We have quite the collective collection. THERE WAS NOTHING LEFT to do but wait. I had been gathering inspiration for weeks and was left on the tail end of emails and voice messages I’d left, ready for a response. Then, the phone rang. And there was the voice of Ron Wolfe, an area wine collector with his partner, Lisa Guess, who together have made a home for more than 2,000 bottles of wine in their custom cellar (pg. 40). As Wolfe invited our team to come on by, I reveled in a sense of triumph. Some of us collect treasured works of art; some scour for Richard Mille-style watches; some amass limited-edition sneakers; and some, like me, seek out something a little more abstract—compelling stories of neighbors, business tycoons and game changers that haven’t yet been told. No matter the medium, one thing is certain: We are a community of collectors. There are several rationales as to why we are drawn to the hobby—our suburban surroundings give us room to accumulate, we have the necessary resources and connections to top contacts. But we know the real drive: Collecting is wildly fun, and endlessly interesting. (And, if you go the route of Wolfe and Guess, a big crowd pleaser.)
EX P ERI EN CED, T RU S T E D A DV I S O R .
Wine collections, of course, aren’t the only troves worth celebrating. We also get a peek at the vintage automobiles of Bob Ottewill (pg. 36) and talk one-of-a-kind fashion accessories with Coco Blaisdell Smith of Cocotay Jewelry (pg. 50). And for those who enjoy saving pieces of sartorial history, we provide another top tip on pg. 49: Gold Label Cleaners and Restoration Labs can revive discolored antique textiles. Meanwhile, I’ll be on my anecdote adventure, which reminds me: Should you have any interesting stories in the works (collection-based or otherwise), I’m all ears.

FOLLOW THE ART AUTHENTIC ART IS EVERYWHERE—if you spend time in Centennial, Lone Tree, Littleton or Sheridan, that is. Thanks to the South Suburban Public Art Committee, organized by South Suburban Parks and Recreation more than a decade ago, special sculptures, paintings and the like have become staples in area parks and recreation centers.
Intersection
Better still: All of the pieces, submitted via proposals, are by Colorado artists and chosen by the art-minded residents who make up the committee (which you are invited to apply to join).
WE DARE YOU not to feel inspired after visiting the more than 60 pieces on display between the four south metro towns—including permanent exhibits (some owned by the cities of Littleton and Lone Tree), temporary presentations inside rec centers and “loaned” work outside Centennial’s Goodson Recreation Center.
Here, we offer a starting tour of the compiled works. To see it all, follow South Suburban’s interactive art map on ssprd.org at your leisure.
It gets better: New pieces are added every year. “We look at where our most recent sculptures are—we want to distribute art evenly across the district—and area needs,” says committee chair Jessica Wilcox. “The South Suburban staff tells us what’s coming, and we try to align our projects with those endeavors. How great would it be to commemorate a new trail with a new sculpture?”
INTERSECTION Kimmer Plaza, Lone Tree
PHOTOS: COURTESY SOUTH SUBURBAN PARKS AND RECREATION
In this three-piece stone sculpture, artist Frank Swanson has managed to encapsulate the Colorado design aesthetic. The (climbingfriendly) carving is meant to be a “bridge” between man and nature; the outside of the boulder keeps its natural finish, while the inside is smooth and man-manipulated. PENNANT WHIMSY Cherry Knolls Park, Centennial David Farquharson is behind this optical illusion. The flags, created from meshed metal in varying hues, appear to be blowing in the wind, but are really completely still. “When we first installed it, we thought he used those colors to make it bright,” Wilcox says. “But he actually researched all of the local schools and put their team colors on the flags.” THE GIFT Goodson Recreation Center, Centennial Here, sculptor Kim Kaminski really gets to the heart of the matter. The small bronze piece “represents the human journey of being full, open and giving.” Notice the varying patinaed hues, the basket of gold hearts and the single heart the figure is extending.

YOSHI HIRAOKA, A SEASONED BARTENDER AT DEL FRISCO’S DOUBLE EAGLE STEAKHOUSE, HAS SPENT MANY NIGHTS LISTENING TO OUR STORIES. TODAY, WE’RE LISTENING TO HIS. By Lori Midson 19

STANDING ORDER Follow your heart, rather than just your taste buds, with Hiraoka’s breakdown of the Del Frisco’s cocktail menu by mood.
I’LL DRINK TO THAT! Sapphire Bramble (left), The VIP (right)
PHOTO: CHAD CHISHOLM, CUSTOM CREATIONS
If you’re celebrating a promotion, sip our VIP cocktail. It’s our most popular cocktail because it’s smooth, tastes great and makes you feel like you’re on top of the world.
IT’S JUST SHY OF COCKTAIL HOUR and the bar at Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse is starting to buzz with regulars. The chatter includes a riot of animated greetings—many of them directed at Yoshi Hiraoka, a fresh-faced, charismatic and unflappable five-year veteran of the Del Frisco’s bar team. There’s a simple explanation as to why he is so popular—a routine confidante—among bar-goers: Hiraoka, who began slinging drinks at the Cheesecake Factory in Park Meadows when he turned 21, loves his job. He can’t imagine doing anything else. “I started as a baker at the Cheesecake Factory, but I was always watching the bartenders and was determined to get a job behind the bar; it’s my calling,” he says. What is it like to be a well-liked barkeep who is on a mission to craft easy conversation in addition to cocktails? We asked Hiraoka about everything from the weirdest drink request he’s heard to what he’s learned about pickup lines. Here’s what he had to say. I’VE MADE GREAT CONNECTIONS HERE—ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BAR. I drove a $171,000 Tesla and regulars have taken me to play golf at Lakewood Country Club and Castle Pines Golf Club. I’ve also been invited to Denver Broncos and Colorado Rockies games. THE WEIRDEST DRINK REQUEST I’ve received came
RAISE A GLASS Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse Greenwood Village 303.796.0100 delfriscos.com
from a gentleman who ordered sweet vermouth on the rocks. It’s a very sweet, low-alcohol liqueur that’s a mixer, so it’s really strange to drink a whole glass of it. I’ve been bartending for more than a decade and that was a first for me. PICKUP LINES NEVER WORK. The best approach is to be friendly and sincere. The antiquated “Do you come here often?” line is now best stated as “Have you ever been here before?” If you get the “yes” answer, then follow it up with “Is there anything you would recommend?” A good conversation inevitably starts there. THE BEST ADVICE I’VE EVER GOTTEN: As a bartender, you know you’re on a stage all the time. Either use it to your advantage and give off good energy or choose a different profession. IF I WERE A SPIRIT, I’d be tequila. It’s smooth, like me, and we have this inseparable bond, mostly because we both like to get the party started. GOOD BARTENDERS make the job look a lot easier than it really is. The best of us are always composed, even though you have 100 different things going on at once. THE ONE CELEBRITY I’d love to make a cocktail for is Tom Hanks. I’d make him an ice-cold Belvedere martini. It’s classic, like him. 20

If you had a long day, sip the Old Fashioned Forty-Six; it’s ideal after a hard day at the office. Made with Maker’s 46, an Earl Grey tea syrup and Earl Grey bitters, it’s a sturdy combination that’s strong enough to calm nerves. If you’re looking for something that goes well with appetizers, sip Tito’s Mule. This mule is light and refreshing, which help it easily complement all of our apps. If you’ve just suffered a breakup, sip the Double Eagle Margarita. It’s strong and has a punch, which will help you forget about the one that got away. If you want the person next to you to be intrigued by what you’re drinking, sip our Sapphire Bramble. The summertime drink catches people’s eye because of its bright color. It’s served in a tall glass and garnished with a thyme sprig and blackberries on a pick. If you want to be the envy of Instagram, sip the Pamplemousse Spritz. It’s beautiful, thanks to its bright orange hue and edible flower garnish wrapped around the glass, and tastes as good as it looks.

Growth Spurt SANDY’S WAY MICROFARM HAS REALLY TAKEN ROOT IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. By Malissa Stark-Rodenburg
RAW TALENT AND RAW VEGGIES are abundant at Sandy’s Way Microfarm in Sedalia. That’s because, head farmer Cale Sprister claims, he can make almost anything grow: “I joke that I have ten green fingers and ten green toes.” His evidence: A 1/6-acre family-run farm that yields between 15 and 20 standard types of veggies and herbs, plus a handful of experimental crops, from its wellcared-for roots. With no prior experience, Sprister decided to give farming a go in 2004. When he started growing more food than his family could consume, he launched Sandy’s Way (named in honor of his food-loving father-in-law) as a buyer’s club and microfarm in 2016. The buyer’s club—similar to a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program—is a way to pass along overabundant produce, but also gives Sprister a chance to experiment with unique products (like Chinese cabbage, lighter in taste and texture than its traditional counterpart and ideal for making kimchi, and pink eggplant, smaller and less bitter than purple eggplant).

THIS WAY TO QUALITY VEGGIES Sandy’s Way Microfarm Sedalia 720.722.3633 sandyswayfarm.com
Here’s how it works: Every week Sprister, or a designated subscriber from the community, delivers a bag full of five to seven products to homes in Greenwood Village, Highlands Ranch, Castle Rock, Roxborough and other communities that express high-enough interest. What’s in that delivery depends on what’s growing, with the option to add on eggs. The bundle typically provides enough food for seven days. Sprister has worked hard to reduce pain points of traditional CSAs—mainly, food waste—which is why each delivery comes with an A-to-Z guide about storing produce, plus recipes. His ultimate challenger is, of course, Mother Nature. When you invest in a CSA, you invest in the farm—the good and the bad. That might mean, ahem, snow in May and a delayed growing season, perfectly edible cabbage with some bite marks in it or fewer eggs because a coyote found the chickens. If you’re not ready to commit to that unpredictability, simply head to the farm whenever you’re out of fresh produce or look for Sandy’s Way at the Castle Rock Farmer’s Market (which runs every Saturday through Sept. 28). Ahead, some of Sprister’s freshproduce-shopping tips, plus how to find other high-caliber microfarms. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GO TO A FARMER’S MARKET? “It’s hard to keep your vegetables really fresh at
a farmer’s market,” says Sprister. For the best options, get there as early as possible. WHAT ARE THE DOS AND DON’TS WHEN SELECTING PRODUCE? Do smell the herbs: If herbs are fresh, they will have a strong, intoxicating aroma. Do talk to the farmer: Vegetables can wilt fast, so it’s best to ask when it was harvested to determine true freshness. Don’t discriminate: “Although I try to put out the most beautiful produce I can, I would end up tossing 70 to 80 percent of my veg if I were held to the supermarket standard,” says Sprister. Though they might be a little crooked, wrinkly or cracked, locally grown produce is more likely to have a higher nutrient content and taste better. Don’t ask for a discount on an ugly vegetable. WHAT RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE TO FIND OTHER LOCAL FARMS? LocalHarvest (localharvest.org) will connect you with microfarms, farmer’s markets, CSAs and restaurants in your area that serve local food. NOW, WHAT DO I DO WITH ALL THESE VEGGIES? The Spristers like to make ratatouille: chop up eggplant, mushrooms, onions, summer squash and zucchini. Add olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt, pepper and garlic and grill. Serve on top of greens or pasta. 24

IT’S EASY TO GET COMFORTABLE IN EMERSON BAILEY COLLECTION’S EXPERIENTIAL SHOWROOM. By Kathy Hisey Baum
WORDS TO THE WISE: Once you’ve stepped foot inside the Emerson Bailey Collection studio, you may never want to leave. Located on a tree-lined neighborhood street in Cherry Hills Village, the space is, professionally speaking, a boutique lifestyle design showroom and workspace filled with elegant hand-curated items owner Susan Weiss finds in her travels— an enticing narrative in its own right. After minutes inside with Weiss, however, that description seems to be missing one important account: how this designer has created a space that masters the make-yourselfat-home philosophy.
PHOTOS: E.J. CARR
Built from the ground up in 2018, the studio looks and feels like just like a house. European antiques and classic contemporary furnishings bring life to a living room, kitchen, dining room and upstairs bath and bedroom. Rather than looking through a catalog or browsing a store, customers are invited to get to know each piece in the place up-close—feel the softness of mohair throws, learn how Belgian lighting can be embedded in a bathroom wall, 27

try Libeco Belgian Linen foutas (used as towels in Europe) as lovely throws or tablecloths. Curious how the European faucets in the bathroom work? Feel free to test those out, too. “I want my clients to have a sensory experience,” Weiss says. “When you can see furnishings, home goods and architectural elements in the context of how they look in a home and learn the story of how they were made, there’s a more authentic connection. People can visualize living with the elements they love.” It was Weiss’ architect father, Harold Emerson Bailey, who inspired her to build EB Collection, a comprehensive high-end design company

for these EB Collection collaborations. Soon, opting to buy an Airstream-like portable “home” will mean enjoying everything Weiss’ sophisticated design sensibility has to offer. She is working with Santa-Barbarabased Matthew and Joanna Hofmann of Living Vehicle to make their luxury “mobile living space” interiors as sleek as the exteriors. Look for a launch this fall. This month, EB Collection will also be hosting a pop-up store at Formation Boutique in Vail. EB Collection is also available at EBC Warehouse, Centennial and EBC Lifestyle Boutique, Denver.
that includes EB Living (offering luxury home goods); EB Build (offering crafted building materials and architectural elements); and EB Brands (which hosts partnerships with other design brands). In the studio (which serves as EB headquarters), everything from garden urns from New York to 25 tons of limestone from Texas to European candles known for their sleek brass containers come together to make Weiss’ authentic style: “The space is gorgeous, but also has texture and grit. You should surround yourself with beauty and quality in everything from your sofa to your faucet hardware— drinking coffee in a paper cup is an entirely different experience than drinking it from a French ceramic mug served alongside a cookie on a lovely handpainted plate.” Weiss shares the stories behind the design of each piece. “This is the way it’s done in Europe,” she says. “You learn the stories of why certain materials are used, how items are made, the creative philosophy and even meet the creators.”

My senses are in overdrive everywhere I go.” 28

Scoring Distinctive Décor FINDING UNIQUE HOME GOODS ISN’T ROCKET SCIENCE—ANYMORE. By Ali Longwell DECORATING (or redecorating) the house is never as easy as it seems. To make a space unique—with pieces you haven’t seen at a friend or family member’s house and that aren’t copied straight out of a lookbook—takes time and a knack for discovery. The mother-daughter duo behind lulu’s furniture and decor, thankfully, know a thing or two about both.
Christy Vranesic Brant (mother) and Caitlin Marsh (daughter) have filled their revered boutique, which moved into the Cherry Hills Village area (and a bigger storefront) last year, with rare, distinct home pieces for more than a decade. We asked them to share some of their searching secrets.
PHOTOS: PAUL WINNER
SEEK OUT SOLID SHOPS The best way to find hidden gems is through word of mouth, says Marsh: “I always look for local shops because you know they’re not corporate and will most likely have different items.” In other words, keep away from big box stores. “Nothing there is going to be unique,” says Marsh. Brant and Marsh prefer designated markets for furniture and gifts (their favorites are in New York) and estate sales, in addition to local artisans. “A lot of bloggers are in-the-know on cool places off the beaten path, too,” says Marsh. Start with Denverdweller.com, who put out a list that Marsh recommends. One more thing: “Avoid the internet,” says Brant.

“Everybody has access to all that stuff all the time.” SHOULD WE TRY TO WORK DIRECTLY WITH A DESIGNER OR CRAFTSMAN? Absolutely, says the pair. “As a consumer, if you are not design-oriented nor good with spatial planning, don’t have spare time or just don’t know what you’re doing, then I would absolutely work with someone who does,” says Marsh. KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A GOOD ANTIQUE AND A BAD ANTIQUE It can be really hard to spot a bad buy unless you’re in the business, says Marsh, so be wary. “Ever since American Pickers came out and it became cool to ‘reclaim’ and ‘repurpose’ things, prices have gone way up and authenticity isn’t like it used to be,” Marsh warns. If you aren’t sure about an item, compare prices and information at multiple shops. A good place to start? Watson and Co. on South Broadway in Platt Park. “They know what they are doing and have great pieces,” Marsh adds. DOES UNIQUE HAVE TO MEAN ECLECTIC? What is unique is going to depend on you and your style. No matter what, just start with pieces you love when designing a room, says the duo. For some, starting with the “bones” of the room—the bigger staple pieces like a sectional in a family room or table in a dining room—is easiest. Overall, don’t purchase too many matching pieces, such as an identical love seat and sofa. Mixing up patterns and colors creates a fun aesthetic. BE OK WITH WALKING AWAY Don’t be discouraged if you can’t find the best piece right away; keep looking. “The right piece is out there, don’t opt for something that you don’t really like,” says Marsh.

ALSO, SAY NO TO TRENDS You are, after all, looking for unexpected pieces. “Talk to people with a style you like and get their two-cents [on what they avoided],” Marsh advises. Overall, Brant and Marsh recommend saying no to barn doors, rug-layering, shiplap and industrial-farmhouse and farmhouse-chic looks.

Star Bob Ottewill, automobile “accumulator” By Lori Midson
ON A RECENT Sunday morning, Bob Ottewill’s 1967 Jaguar E-Type convertible (below, right) sits with an air of regality on the lawn of Arapahoe Community College. Its gorgeous, resplendent exterior hue, called Champagne, glows in the sunlight. “Goldie”—the Jag’s nickname—draws a swarm of admirers.
On the dashboard is a coveted red ribbon. Goldie has just won second place in the Colorado Concours d’Elegance and Exotic Sports Car Show. “I never thought I’d

Here’s where Ottewill finds his. “One of the best places to view what’s available is in Keith Martin’s Sports Car Market, a great monthly magazine that tells you about auctions all over the world,” says Ottewill. The magazine, which labels itself “The Insider’s Guide to Collecting, Investing, Values and Trends,” profiles cars in several different categories, including “Affordable Classics” and “English.” There are also classified ads and car-related columns. Attend local car shows, including the Colorado Concours d’Elegance and Exotic Sports Car Show, to scope out your dream ride, ask questions and compare models. Contact—and become a member of—local car clubs, which include Jaguar, Porsche and BMW. “There are a lot of benefits to joining a car club,” says Ottewill, most notably connecting with people who have technical expertise.

place, much less win a ribbon,” muses Ottewill, who spent more than 200 hours readying the car for the competition and later joked that he really should have won first place (a designation that went to a black Porsche). A native of Kansas City, Kan. who now calls the south metro area home, Ottewill prefers the term “accumulator” to car collector. And while some car hoarders go big, Ottewill favors quality over quantity, capping his collection at a mere five cars. “Even if I had more money to spend, I’d probably limit the collection to five. I want to drive each one regularly, and since I do all the detail work on each car and some maintenance, time becomes a factor,” he explains. Still, to anyone with a modicum of knowledge about automotive history, Ottewill’s stock stands out. His light ivory 1967 Porsche 911 coupe (above), gifted to him by his late father and restored to original specifications 30 years ago, won a blue ribbon in 2002 and again in 2017 at the Colorado Concours car show. Ottewill’s 1978 BMW 320i coupe, its topaz exterior and black interior a sumptuous color combination, strutted away with a “Best of Show” award at the 2018 Concours showcase. His 2008 silver and boudoir-red Porsche Limited Edition Boxster RS 60 Spyder—the only car in Ottewill’s caboodle with electric windows and air conditioning—would stop the paparazzi in its tracks. It was also decorated with a red ribbon at the 2018 Colorado Concours show. The last of his throng is a pristinely restored lemon-yellow and black 1971 Volkswagen Beetle, affectionately known as “The Machine.” With more than 38

230,000 miles on its odometer, it holds a special distinction: Ottewill’s son, Doug, and daughter, Marianne, both learned to drive behind its wheel. Doug, who also has an affinity for cars, will eventually acquire his father’s bundle. “He’ll sell what he isn’t interested in keeping, splitting the money with his sister,” says Ottewill. A former junior high school English teacher and columnist for Mile High Sports magazine, Ottewill admits that he wasn’t particularly mechanical as a kid. “I was more interested in sports than cars,” he says, crediting his late father for his automobile obsession. “My dad was an airline mechanic with an affinity for Porsches, so much so that he bought a new one every year.” But under his dad’s watch, Ottewill wasn’t allowed to drive them. So, he did what most teenagers do when the adults take a leave of absence: take the Porsches out for a spin. “Finally getting to drive and appreciate those Porsches was the major impetus for my interest in automobiles,” says Ottewill, noting that with the exception of his father’s 911 coupe, his other rides are “just cars I liked, could afford and would enjoy driving.” Is he interested in selling any of them? No. “I love them all,” stresses Ottewill, who estimates that his collection is worth somewhere in the ballpark of $330,000. All of his cars are kept under lock-and-key in his home garages. “I’m not a good mechanic, but I tinker with them all the time— even in the winter—and I drive them year-round; nothing good happens when they just sit there gathering dust.”

Lightning ROUND!
WANT TO START COLLECTING WINE?
WOLFE’S QUICK WINE ADVICE. Nearby restaurant with a great wine list: “Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse.”
Follow Wolfe’s five tips.
Best wine and cheese pairing: “Triple-cream brie with either a Brut Champagne or California pinot noir.”
1.
Ask a sommelier for help. “A sommelier is a wine collector’s best friend,” Wolfe says. “He or she can help by getting to know your tastes and suggesting new and age-worthy wines to try.”
Best wine accessory: “A Coravin, which allows you to pour wine from a bottle without removing the cork.”
2.
PHOTO: CHAD CHISHOLM, CUSTOM CREATIONS
Make friends with people who appreciate wine. “Not only will they help you learn, but when they realize that you have an appreciation for wine, they just may find something special in the cellar to share with you.”
3.
STEP INSIDE Ron Wolfe and Lisa Guess’ wine cellar, which Wolfe custom-built, and you’ll travel the world through fermented grapes. In reading labels alone, you’ll become familiar with Bordeaux’s SaintJulien appellation in France via a bottle of 2000 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou; Alba, Piedmont, Italy with a 2010 Barolo; Stellenbosch, South Africa with a 2016 Reserve Chenin Blanc; and what feels like countless other winemaking cities and countries. For Wolfe and his partner Guess, of course, their array of wine is easy to tally: The south metro residents have thoughtfully curated more than 2,000 wines from around the world. They know the ins and outs of each bottle—and have no problem rattling off insightful tasting notes as they sample vintages with friends in the cellar’s accompanying tasting room, also built by Wolfe. “You can tell a lot about a wine by its color, and smell is as important as taste,” Wolfe says, offering the Heitz Cellar Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. The blocks of the vineyard this wine comes from are in proximity to eucalyptus trees that line the road and, while it’s not a predominant aroma, you can smell it if you know it’s there, he says. “Lisa and I believe that collecting wine is a way of creating memories of people, places and special times in our lives,” he continues. The visit to Stellenbosch, for example, was part of a two-week trip around southern Africa that also included a safari. Wolfe’s love and intricate knowledge of wine runs deep. He began the collection on his own 25 years
ago, with Guess joining in when they met in 2005. Along the way, Wolfe has continued to keep things simple and approachable: “I have learned that the best wine in the world is the one you like the most on any given day, and that can be and likely is different for all of us.” The idea for their basement cellar came when the couple’s collection outgrew their shelves and fridges. Now, their wine is stored at a set 60 percent humidity and 55 degrees, surrounded by lights on motion controllers that turn on when you enter the room. But it’s not just a well-engineered space— Wolfe completed the cellar with personal touches commemorating the couple’s journey with wine. He scored redwood, for instance, that for a century had been in the cellar of Napa Valley’s Chateau Montelena Winery, the couple’s favorite winery, to use as a rack that holds and displays a prized Chateau Montelena bottle: a 2007 horizontal of Estate cabernet sauvignon valued at $4,000. To help build their collection and sample new wines, the couple visits a wine region outside of the United States every couple of years. (They are hoping to join in on a harvest during a future trip). They also take wine-focused trips to Northern California wine country at least twice a year. Wolfe, who works in the telecommunications industry, has thought about pursuing a second career in the wine industry once he retires, perhaps as a sommelier. Speaking of retirement: When that time comes, there’s a special celebratory bottle awaiting him—a 1985 cabernet from Chateau Montelena. 42
august 2019 // AvidLifestyle
Break the rules. Don’t get caught believing there are hard and fast ground rules. For example, Wolfe says, “some might consider red wine with fish a poor choice, until you try a cedar-planked salmon with a nice pinot noir.”
4.
Don’t just focus on aged or expensive wines. “Not all wine is made to age. In fact, the vast majority of wine consumed in the U.S. is opened the same day it is purchased. So, wine producers make wine for that market, with a much smaller percentage focusing on wines that will be as good or better a decade or more later,” Wolfe continues. And don’t immediately go for the most expensive selection on the menu; the price doesn’t always justify the quality. “I often find great satisfaction in discovering an excellent bottle of wine at an affordable price,” he says.
5.
Don’t judge a wine by its location. “When given an opportunity to try something new, don’t hesitate. Keep an open mind and you will find that good wine can be made in the most unlikely places.”
SPECIAL THANKS TO THE MADDEN MUSEUM OF ART
In Scottie Iverson, fashion hobbyist By Kendall Kostelic

august 2019 // AvidLifestyle
Scottie’s FASHION Philosophy IVERSON “WEARS HER BLESSINGS.” THESE ARE THE MODISH PRINCIPLES SHE LIVES BY.
SCOTTIE IVERSON is “going to have a museum someday.” Her plan is, in fact, already taking shape. In her next home or office, she’s thinking of setting aside space to form an exhibition hall. Its contents: striking shoes, dresses, “cocktail suits,” furs, bags, hats and other fashions she has lovingly gathered for decades. Or, as Iverson defines the carefully-selected vintage and modern pieces in her wardrobe, simply works of art. The result, we expect, will be quite a display.
Iverson has finely tuned a certain aesthetic—classic with an edge—with a selective list of designer labels (of which Valentino, Emanuel Ungaro and Carolina Herrera are among those that reign supreme in her ensembles). To be added to the mélange, clothes and accessories don’t necessarily have to be designer, but do have to have lively hues or details and sport a personality; Iverson hardly wears black. “My collection started as a young adult when I was working in retail,” she says. “Back then, stores were very strict. You had to look very sophisticated and could only wear certain colors. I wanted to break out of that and have my own identity.” PHOTO: TOMMIE COLLIER
Save things.
“There are a lot of wardrobe consultants who say to edit your closet and get rid of anything you don’t wear within a year. I don’t subscribe to that. There will be an item I buy that maybe I don’t wear for five years, but was the perfect accompaniment or accessory for what I was trying to achieve when I bought it. … You chose that piece and it’s almost part of you; its personality and your personality blend.”
Does she share? Maybe. “If somebody is in love with a cape or accessory, I volunteer to let them borrow it and tell them they can do so at any time,” Iverson says. “That doesn’t include the Valentino suit.” And usually, she shops her closet, rather than stores, just like her friends: “I like my collection more than what’s out there right now.”
Experiment with hues.
There is a lot of promise hanging in her closet or, should we say, closets. Iverson uses closets in every room of her and her husband’s home, plus has free-standing clothing racks in the basement. “I do believe in quality over quantity, though,” she says.
“Stylists will tell people to only wear certain colors; I don’t subscribe to that either. I’m not going to sacrifice structure and style for that color. It’s great if you can get everything in one garment, but that’s rare these days.”
Know your textiles.
“Fabrics are very important to me. I’ll ask: Will this fabric endure? To me, fashion is an investment. You have to treat it well; it’s very special.”
Scout, then shop.
“I go scouting to see what is available and then think about what I want to buy. Now, sometimes the piece you decide on is gone when you go back to get it because somebody else bought it, but I’ve finally developed the attitude that if that piece is gone it wasn’t meant to be. If it was meant to be, the piece would still be there and, not only that, it would be reduced and everybody would be very happy. I really like it when that happens.”
Fur and feather wraps and a Valentino painted suede, sheep-skin-cuffed skirt suit are a few of her signature pieces. Though she can’t deny her devotion to shoes, millinery and, surprisingly, sunglasses. “I don’t know how my sunglasses collection happened,” she quips.
Some have already been privy to a preview from the Cherry Hills Village resident, who takes care not to repeat outfits when she’s out—oftentimes at major community events, which, as a marketer, journalist, event planner, public relations expert and owner of Swan Taylor Denver, she sometimes plans. “I space out and keep a record of what I wear,” she says. “I try to remember what I’ve worn to this event with this group of people and who has seen this and so on.” Iverson became captivated by the power of dressing for the occasion in the same place that she fell for all things regarding style—her hometown in the Midwest, watching Mom on the sewing machine. “My mother was very artistic and creative. As a hobby, she was always making things and, as a seamstress, could fit me perfectly,” she says. “I would buy sweaters and tops and then she would perfectly craft skirts to match so I looked really put together. I just watched and, by osmosis, learned. Even after I was married and moved here, I could send her a picture or pattern and choose the buttons and fabrics and she would put the piece together and ship it back.”
46
august 2019 // AvidLifestyle
Her wardrobe is organized into categories: formal, serious and fun. “For a while, I would trade out this season’s wardrobe to purchase next season’s, but I’m not doing that anymore. My husband will just have to build an extension to the house,” she jokes.

YOUR FASHION ANTIQUES MAY NOT BE AGED BEYOND REPAIR: This garment-care company brings vintage clothing (and other items) back to life. By Laurel Thompson
SUNNY JUNG of Gold Label Cleaners and Restoration Labs is a master at turning back the clock—when it comes to vintage fashion and family heirlooms, that is.
Throughout the shop’s 30 years, Jung has seen countless vintage wedding gowns, communion dresses, christening gowns, tablecloths, napkins and even old linens that date back to the 1800s return to owners’ closets as renewed as an aged piece can get. “The restoration process is all about returning old clothing back to its original color,” she says. “Our long-term care process focuses on restoring that color by carefully washing items with a natural soap formula and teaching people how to store vintage items properly.” Before you make a trip with your prized objet d’art, however, there are things—rules, advice, tools of the trade—to know. Jung takes us down the list. CHECK YOUR STORAGE TECHNIQUE The manner in which vintage clothing is stored is just as important as how it is washed, says Jung. It is imperative to store antique items in the right environment so they don’t fade again or, worse, deteriorate. “If you’re not going to wear a garment soon, you’ll need to keep it away from direct sunlight, which disintegrates the fabric and causes discoloration,” she explains. “After restoring antique items, I recommend placing them between acid-free tissue paper or cotton cloths, like muslin, that have been thoroughly washed in organic, fragrance-free soap. Shining Hour COCOTAY JEWELRY, WHOSE CELEBRATED ACCESSORIES REVISIT THE PAST WHILE ALSO MAKING A MODERN FASHION STATEMENT, HAS A NEW HOMETOWN. By Suzanne S. Brown TWENTY YEARS AGO, Coco Blaisdell Smith didn’t have plans to be a jewelry designer. She had no dreams of seeing her name on Bergdorf Goodman shelves and certainly didn’t imagine that anything she’d do would end up in the pages of Vogue or be worn by a leading actress in a Hollywood film. She was preparing, rather, for a career in the finance industry. After studying at the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado Boulder with her twin sister, Taylor, Coco (whose full name is Courtney) moved to San Francisco to work in the world of money. But on her days off, Coco found herself returning to a childhood habit: Browsing antique shops and 50

flea markets for vintage jewelry that she would then take home to refashion into striking new pieces. Coco has felt the allure of colorful, sparkly jewelry all her life. Growing up, she and Taylor loved borrowing their great aunt Bettye’s baubles. “She had fabulous jewelry,” Coco recalls. In San Francisco, people began noticing her and her sister’s hobby, asking to buy jewelry they were wearing right off of their ears, necks and arms. That’s when the twins knew they were on to something. They named their jewelry business Cocotay Jewelry, an amalgam of their childhood nicknames derived from “Courtney” and “Taylor,” and Coco said goodbye to finance.
HOW TO WEAR STATEMENT JEWELRY Or how to get the Cocotay look. Keep the clothes simple and let your jewelry be the center of attention. Add drama to your favorite black dress, for example, with a bold necklace, earrings or cuff bracelet. A great look for summer: Wear all white and accessorize with colorful vintage bangles and earrings.
Cocotay Jewelry Instagram: @cocotayjewelry cocotay.com
Since 2002, Coco has been growing the cult following behind Cocotay and crafting the brand’s splashy earrings, cuff bracelets, necklaces and rings by hand. (In 2006, she bought out Taylor, whose passion really is finance.) The brand began in San Francisco before moving to New York City, but recently made an exciting transition. Cocotay’s new headquarters: Cherry Hills Village. Scattered around Coco’s home studio, where she can design and also care for her children, ages 5 and 2, are trays filled with colorful trinkets. Some are dedicated to specific clients whose needs Coco knows; others are works in progress for anyone who might shop her items.
Not all vintage pieces need to be redesigned to look great; just take the original in a different style direction. An example: Top jeans and a T-shirt with your grandmother’s pearls.

“I will always be designing jewelry, whether I get paid for it or not, because it is a part of who I am. It is my passion, and most of all it brings joy to others.”
Women used to wear sets of matching brooches, earrings and rings. Today, it’s more fun to mix it up. Try mismatched earrings if you’re really daring. Pile on a stack of bracelets. “I like to wear three or five at a time,” Coco says. Finally, the designer says, “I always keep a pair of vintage clip-on earrings in my car. If I want to meet someone for a glass of wine, I always have a spare pair to throw on!” combines vintage elements, like a round beaded clip-on earring from the 1950s with something fresh or unexpected, such as a silk tassel, a colorful acrylic hoop or a crystal. The designer credits her sense of style to her mother, an impeccable dresser “who is the type of woman who wears white on an airplane.” From her dad, who ran the family’s lumber business in New Jersey, she learned to work with her hands.
Never far from hand are needle-nosed pliers and a stash of wire rings used to join stones and other details together. “I often have to put things down and walk away. I can’t rush the process,” says the effervescent blonde, who continually tries on and removes various pieces of jewelry as she works.
Watch for what’s available at Cocotay on Instagram, which has become a major marketplace for the company. And rest assured that anything you see comes from a true place of inspiration. “I learned very early on that I couldn’t let other designers influence me,” Coco says. “I will always stay true to my own design aesthetic.”
One could call each piece she finishes a work of art—Coco only uses each design once, making everything truly one-of-a-kind. Cocotay jewelry is edgy, but always chic—Coco 52

Music to Our Ears WE HAVE AN ICONIC SAXOPHONIST (WHOSE FAMILY IS ALSO DOING SOME ILLUSTRIOUS THINGS) IN OUR MIDST. By Kyle Wagner

5 SAXOPHONISTS... who significantly impacted Gerald Albright’s music and life.
CANNONBALL ADDERLEY: The late alto saxophonist was associated with superior technical proficiency and a hardcore bop sound. “He inspired me so much,” Albright says. “He literally changed my life with his melodic and upbeat playing, which ultimately filled me with so much satisfaction that I knew I had to try to match his enthusiasm and style.”
Albright’s personal collection of about 40 instruments sits in storage in the Castle Pines home he has shared with his wife, Glynis, since 2005. He’s been a saxophone star since the 1980s, playing at President Clinton’s inauguration ceremony and alongside artists such as The Temptations, Whitney Houston, Anita Baker and Ray Parker Jr. His 2014 release, Slam Dunk, was nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, and last year he released his latest effort, 30. In 2009, Utah-based Cannonball Musical Instruments began a partnership with Albright to create his own Gerald Albright Signature Series of saxophones. “When we decide to make an improvement on a horn, I’ll perform with it on stage and then I give them feedback on that horn,” he explains. “It’s nice to keep them around so that if someone who plays stops in for a visit, they can check one out and see how it feels.” Albright is currently working on album No. 20—part of his family’s second Christmas tour to 10 cities in November and December, which will once again find his talented
STANLEY TURRENTINE: The late jazz tenor saxophonist became beloved for his R&B and soul sounds before taking on the blues and a little pop. “He was such a great tenor player,” Albright says. “So, so soulful from back in the day, and he was also incredibly versatile. I can listen to him anytime.” GROVER WASHINGTON JR.: The hit song “Just the Two of Us” found the prolific Washington Jr. collaborating with Bill Withers. “Grover would have been 76 years old this year, and several other musicians and I are paying tribute to him,” Albright says. “The last tribute show was me and Everette Harp in New Haven, Conn., which was such a good time.” MACEO PARKER: Many music aficionados know him from his days of touring with James Brown—“Maceo! Blow your horn!” was Brown’s regular introduction to the horn player—but he later was also a member of Parliament-Funkadelic and now tours as a solo artist. “Maceo really became such a part of Brown’s sound at that time,” Albright explains. “He’s funk all the way.”

IT’S USUALLY CONSIDERED impolite to blow one’s own horn, but Gerald Albright can’t help it—the eight-time Grammy-nominated saxophonist not only has three decades of making beautiful music under his belt, but he has his own line of horns to trumpet, as well.
JOHN COLTRANE: The icon started out as an alto, but was best known for his prowess on the tenor, famously practicing 10 to 15 hours a day. “I was impressed with Coltrane’s great and unique tenor sound,” Albright says. “His approach was like no other. I felt like he was always reaching for a higher plateau.”
vocalist daughter, Selina, performing with him. Meanwhile, son Brandon runs his own videography company, while Glynis has established two food-oriented enterprises. “We almost lost Glynis in 1994 when she was diagnosed with leukemia. After she went into remission, she began making wellness desserts for other people with cancer under the name Just Sweet Enough,” Albright says. “Glynis’ Kitchen, her other brand, is where you go for comfort food.” Since the family’s move to Castle Pines, Albright confesses that in addition to saxophones, he has started to amass something else: golf clubs. “With my high-speed vocation of traveling and doing shows all the time, golf is a really nice balancing factor,” he says. Maybe we should start reserving tee times, too.

The Pursuit of Hope THIS LONE TREE RESIDENT BRINGS ILL CHILDREN A HELPING HAND IN THE FORM OF BAGS BURSTING WITH FUN. By Kelly Smith TAMMY KRAUSE (above) was a stay-at-home mom, part-time tutor and ally to Denver charities before a life-changing event sent her in a new, million-dollar-nonprofit direction of her own.
The Bags of Fun team has since delivered almost 9,400 bags to children suffering from long-term, serious illnesses nationwide. More than 250 bags have gone to children in Colorado this year. “Our very first delivery [back when Bags of Fun launched] was to a 6-year-old boy who had just had his leg amputated,” Krause says. “He was so animated, and candidly shared his story; I still keep in touch with him and his family.” 60

It was the early aughts. Krause’s daughter, Gabby—one of six kids—had brain cancer. At treatments, Krause made sure “Gabby had a bag for the hospital that was filled with games and activities that kept her busy during long treatment days,” she recalls. “She asked why other kids did not have a bag like hers, and asked me to help get bags to them.” In the fall
of 2004, after Gabby passed away, Krause founded Centennial-based Bags of Fun and The Gabby Krause Foundation to do just that.

HOW HAS BAGS OF FUN (BOF) CHANGED SINCE THE EARLY DAYS? “The bags now might include portable DVD players, Leapsters and Game Boys; every bag has a Kindle Fire, an Amazon gift card and 16 other fun, educational toys.
HOW HAVE FAMILIES RESPONDED? “Parents tell us that the moment their kids got a BOF was ‘the first time they saw their child smile since diagnosis.’ We also hear about the relief a parent feels knowing that there are people in the community who understand and care about them.
“We have also expanded the population of kids we reach. We can now offer BOF to pediatric patients
WHAT’S NEXT?
HAVE A MEMORABLE ENCOUNTER FROM DELIVERING BAGS TO RECIPIENTS? “We recently delivered a bag to a young adult who had been cancer free, but relapsed. She was kind and gracious and had an amazing spirit. She said she never wanted to have to be on the list for a second bag, but was thankful for getting her grown-up BOF.”
As Bags of Fun approaches its 15th year, the company has expanded to Kansas City, Mo., and Indianapolis, with a goal of establishing one new market each year. In Colorado, the 15th annual Bring Out the Bags event takes place Sept. 28 at Broncos Stadium at Mile High, which coincides with the nonprofit’s 10,000th bag delivery and the 15th anniversary of Gabby’s passing.
“Children’s Hospital Colorado did an independent study and found that 94 percent of BOF participants agreed that engaging in play with the patient alleviated stress as a medical provider; 98 percent of parents felt less isolated.”

LAZE IN A DEEP SOAKING TUB The Corner King Spa and the Alpine Corner King Spa guest rooms both have roomy and welcoming deep soaking tubs. HONE YOUR FARMER’S MARKET STRATEGY Graves will take all questions while shopping, from the best way to browse a market (look at everything, noting produce you are most excited about, and then go back and buy) to how to pick top products (don’t overlook the “not so pretty” tomatoes, for instance) to what veggies should be refrigerated (not tomatoes). THE FOOD, CLEARLY We dined on a veggie “charcuterie board”; salad with fresh ricotta; halibut with an heirloom tomato salad; and pound cake with fresh and grilled strawberries. Two dishes were paired with cocktails; two with wine. GRAVES’ CHEF TRICKS As he cooked, Graves shared tips, like how to create a complex vinaigrette using only one citrus fruit: Mix zest with a small amount of sugar and a dash of salt. Then, suprême your citrus (cut between the rinds to get only fruit segments), chop (leaving some small citrus chunks), combine with zest and sugar, add oil and serve.
