AS MUCH AS I don’t like to admit it, I am a terrible shopper. When our children were little, my (now-ex) husband and I did a pretty good job with holiday shopping, I think. But now, I often find myself feeling overwhelmed and uninspired by it all. I love everything else about the holidays, but gift-giving comes with such pressure. Maybe it’s self-imposed because I hold myself to a “not giving gift cards” standard.

Be a part of history with HOLIDAY TEA at The Brown Palace

WHEN KIM MOYLE signed on as Executive Chef at The Brown Palace last year, she had no idea that she was the first female chef in the hotel’s 129-year history. Another surprise? Chef Moyle didn’t know about the yearround Brown Palace tea service before being hired. “A full-on tea? Are you kidding me? How is that even possible?” she recalls thinking. “As a chef, I’ve seen a lot of things, but to have a whole department is so much fun every day.”
She is as excited as every other Denverite to see the hotel’s grand atrium transformed into a holiday postcard. In early November, when the holiday chandelier, made from 250,000 glinting crystal beads, goes up in the eight-story lobby, the space becomes even more magi cal. Next up to kick off the season: bubbly poured at the annual 5,000-glass Champagne Cascade, 60,000 shim mering lights, 4,800 elegant ornaments and gilded velvet trimmings. Now, it’s the holidays.
Chef Moyle says this year there is a new tea company providing 20 teas and a new holiday blend just for The Brown Palace. They also matched the previous tea company’s popular Christmas tea blend, known for its soul-warming winter spices. Guests can enjoy the traditional selection of curry-egg salad and dill creamcheese sandwiches, buttermilk and flavored scones with Devonshire cream and lemon curd, and of course cookies and seasonal pastries, wrapped like sweet-miniature gifts in fondant and chocolate.

The Brown Palace has offered tea service since the late 1800s, though not always in the atrium. “Initially, it was served in the Ladies Ordinary, a two-story room on the eighth floor of the hotel in one of the triangular building’s 45-degreeangle corners,” said Debra Faulkner, the hotel’s historian. In 1910, the ground floor lounge was dedicated to a daily 4:00 p.m. proper high tea for Denver’s ladies to socialize and show off a new frock or hat. A hotel publication from the period described it as a place where “a little extraordinary social debt might be repaid gracefully.”
Faulkner says that though the concept of tea lost popularity in the 1920s and ’30s during Prohibition, the rumors still stand that the wait staff took silver teapots into a tunnel beneath Tremont Place and filled them with a tea-colored bootleg for “special customers.” The atrium-lobby tea service began in 1986
and today’s menu includes champagne and champagne cocktails to sip while listening to live piano or harp music.
Chef Moyle feels privileged to be a part of something as meaningful as The Brown Palace. She loves seeing generations of families coming to tea dressed up and enjoying the hotel. “It’s an anomaly,” she says. “Other cities have a handful of people who feel that way about a historic property. In Denver, everyone feels like this hotel belongs to them.” She is right. Whether you are from a Colorado pioneer family or are a Colorado transplant, taking tea at The Brown (with or without a fancy hat and your pinky up) is a rite of passage sure to make you feel like a native Coloradan. Celebrating Female Culinary Professionals in Denver
On the day of the photoshoot for this story, the Colorado Chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier (LDEI) was enjoying tea. Members, including Chef Moyle, are women dedicated to Colorado’s restaurant, hospitality, agriculture, wine and spirits success. Their annual event, The Big Stir Festival, celebrates and honors Colorado female leaders making a difference in the Colorado culinary scene. The interactive fundraising event features food-, wine- and spirittasting tables; educational seminars; and awards for local female leaders. Last year’s event featured Denver-based author and James Beard awardwinning writer Adrian Miller. Proceeds support the Colorado LDEI scholarship fund for women pursuing degrees in food and beverage, hospitality, and agriculture in the state. A HOLIDAY LIGHT DISPLAY adds a festive touch to any size home, bringing joy to the residents and creating a glowing welcome for guests, all season long. When it comes to actually installing the lights, though, it’s a good idea to leave it up to the professionals.
“Our services are all-inclusive,” explains Nolan Shaffer of Iceberg Lighting. “We provide the lights, we install and maintain them, we take them down, and we store them until the next season.”

TIME
One late-fall morning, while putting up holiday lights on a home in Lone Tree, Vance Brand noticed another homeowner in the neighbor hood struggling with a pile of tangled lights in his driveway. Always keen on promoting the benefits of professionally installed lights, Brand approached the man with an offer to take over.
“He said, ‘No, I’m good, I do this every year,’” says Brand, who owns The Light Pros and is in his 33rd season of decorating homes. But when Brand happened to be in the same neighborhood about 10 hours later, he noticed the man still in his yard, not even close to being done.
“I asked what he did for a living, and he said he was a lawyer,” Brand laughs. “I told him my crew could have installed those lights for what he charges for just one hour. We can knock it out quicker and save people valuable time.”
AESTHETICS
Professionals are trained in designing sym metrical light displays that are clean and beautiful, and not overwhelming. They use special clips that won’t damage the home, and they custom-cut the light strands and exten sion cords so they don’t dangle. They’re also aware of the latest trends: “Permanent lights are popular right now,” Shaffer says. “They cost

a bit more, but they last for years, and you can adjust the colors for different holidays like the Fourth of July or Halloween.” Many companies also offer enhancements like lighted wreaths and garlands.
ENERGY SAVINGS
Although some companies in the area install lights the client already owns, most either lease or sell new lights to homeowners. Unlike retro, cone-shaped incandescent bulbs, today’s bulbs are commercial-grade LED types. “They use ninety percent less energy than those old bulbs,” Shaffer says. The lights are also on a timer, which prevents them from being left on (and wasting energy) during the day.

Professional crews from legitimate companies are fully insured. They’re the ones climbing lad
ders, prancing around on steep roofs and ma neuvering lifts to reach the top of tall trees—and clients aren’t responsible for accidents. (Brand recalls an ER doctor once telling him emergency visits due to falls at home increase dramatically the week after Thanksgiving.)
The company also handles any issues that might arise; most guarantee that they’ll respond within 48 hours. That includes replacing bulbs, explains Shaffer, and reattaching strands knocked down by a storm.
STORAGE
It’s easy for Christmas lights to get tangled
or broken when you’re schlepping them back and forth to the attic or basement. Lighting professionals bring the lights with them, then store them carefully in climate-controlled warehouses.
COST
The price isn’t as high as most people assume, says Shaffer. Although he’s had installs topping $10,000—and much more for commercial properties—he says most clients are surprised that an average job is around $1,500. You get what you pay for, warns Brand: “There are a lot of new, inexperienced companies in this industry, so do your research.”
Though many lighting companies get started as early as October, some still have openings well into December. “I once did an install on Christmas Eve,” Brand says. “They were having a party, and they really didn’t need them until then anyway.”

JEWELRY THAT CAPTURES THE SPIRIT OF COLORADO

JEWELRY SHOULD TELL A STORY. That’s what Matthew of Matthew Winters has in mind with every piece of jewelry he designs.
“I like the idea that jewelry can tell a story of your surroundings, connecting you to the land,” he says, offering Native American jewelry as an example. “The color scheme is based on the limited materials available, like turquoise and silver.”
Matthew’s pieces, reminiscent of motifs and symbols of the West, are meant to connect the wearer to Colorado, so he takes his inspiration from “things that wouldn’t be out of place if you found them on the ground.” The simple yet elegant pine needle earrings from his Ponderosa collection look remarkably like the pine needles you might hear crunching underfoot during a hike in the high country. And the popular river stone pendants from his Worn Over Time collection are modeled after pebbles that were once jagged and rough but were smoothed out over time by rushing water.
“The river stones are tactile, like worry stones,” says the Denver native, who now lives in Greenwood Village. “They’re so satisfying to rub between your fingers.”

Although Matthew’s online jewelry store just opened a year and a half ago, he got his start at a young age. Always fascinated with jewelry, he liked searching for little treasures in his mom’s jewelry box and hiding them all over the house. So in grade school, when he had to pick someone he admired for career day, he chose Boulder jewelry designer Todd Reed: “Stepping into his studio at such a young age made me believe in the possibilities of a career in the craft.”
Today, Matthew sources most of his materials as locally as possible. He uses a lot of gold and silver, significant because of the state’s gold and silver rushes. “I especially love silver, because it ages beautifully, just like river stones,” he says.
He also prefers working with recycled metals—melted down and resold to artisans. When he includes gemstones in his designs, he sources them locally, or at least regionally. “A sapphire from Asia wouldn’t give you any kind of connection to Colorado at all,” he says, explaining that he gets sapphires from Montana, garnets from Arizona and green jade from Wyoming.
Although Matthew sells all of his designs via his website, some are also available at Squash Blossom in Vail. He’s hoping to expand to other area retail stores soon, because he knows that buyers—especially those investing in high-end, luxury pieces—want to touch the jewelry first.
“They’ll feel more comfortable ordering it online,” he says, “once they can hold it and caress it and truly understand it.”

JESSICA BACHUS took her pain and transformed it into a purpose-driven mission to help enrich the lives of and bring joy to children of low-income families in Colorado.
In 2007, Bachus was a proud mother expecting her second child, Kenzi. But her child was stillborn at 24 weeks. Overcome with grief, struggling with how to get through the holidays and bring joy to her family, Bachus channeled her emotions into something that would hon or Kenzi’s memory. Unable to share a Christmas doll with Kenzi, Bachus decided to collect new dolls with the support of those around her to give back to those in need. Ultimately, she collected more than 100 dolls and give them to local nonprofits.

When she watched young children selecting those dolls, Bachus cried tears of joy instead of sorrow, and she saw the beauty from her pain. This transforming moment inspired Bachus to do the same the following year. This time she collected 500 dolls. In 2009, she formed Dolls for Daughters and Kenzi’s Kidz (later rebranding to Kenzi’s Causes). Since its inception, Kenzi’s Causes has evolved to support underprivileged children and their families in Colorado by providing toys, food and more during the holidays; school supplies and clothing during the school year; and assisting families through community outreach, financial planning and professional support.
Kenzi’s Causes runs three programs—most notably the Toy Shop. This program consists of six pop-up Toy Shops during the first and second Saturdays of December across the state (in Denver, Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, Rifle, Pueblo and Longmont). The Toy Shops allow any family in need with a child (from birth up to 18 years old) to pick out new gifts for their kids at no cost. “Our organization provides new gifts that families are able to personally choose based on what’s right for their child. We have gifts for all ages, interests and hobbies,” says Bachus. “What we want to do is make sure that
families feel that their dignity and integrity are intact when they come to our events.”
It’s now more than a decade later, and there’s no end in sight. “We provided over 15,000 toys to low-income children throughout Colorado in 2021,” says Bachus. “And we aim to serve 18,000 children with toys in 2022.” The holidays are an expensive time of year, and the Toy Shop event hopes to alleviate any pressures parents may feel.
Bachus says the Kenzi’s Causes community feels like family full of gratitude. Many families Bachus serves say without this support, they might not be able to provide any gifts for their children: “Parents tell me how appreciative they are that our organization exists and that they’re thankful they can provide gifts to their children during the holidays.”
Bachus also says seeing the joy on parents faces and knowing she’s helped alleviate some stress for them is everything. “At the end of the day, children do not determine their circumstances or have any control over what their socioeconomics look like, so we’re here to bring joy to children and provide them the opportunity to feel equal and know they’re not forgotten,” she says.
Bachus feels every child deserves the tools to succeed in life, and most importantly, to feel loved and valued. “This community has allowed us to impact and change lives, and through all of that, I feel Kenzi is there and her spirit lives on. She’s the reason that so many lives can be changed.”

Post-pandemic, THE OWNERS OF PUNCH BOWL SOCIAL set their sights on the future

PUNCH BOWL SOCIAL , a Denver restaurant, arcade, bowling alley and karaoke bar all in one, shuttered its doors along with its other locations nationwide for most of 2020, then filed bankruptcy after its financial partners bailed. But the Mile High City’s favorite entertainment eatery rises back to the top of the food chain with a top-tier restructuring.
In the early years, the business experienced much success. However, Robert Cornog Jr., an original founder who served as the company’s CFO and chief legal officer, knew to move the company forward, it needed Richard Flaherty, who has been in the hospitality business for more than 25 years. In 2015, Flaherty joined as COO.
“After I visited the Denver location, I imme diately recognized the opportunity here at Punch Bowl with its superb social experience and focus on quality food and beverage,” says Flaherty. “I knew it would be the leading edge of the sword within the industry.”
Then in 2021, the two united as co-CEOS as part of the company’s resurrection from financial disaster during the pandemic.

Blending Cornog’s business background from his days on Wall Street with Flaherty’s excep tional penchant for guest experiences, the two have since set out on a mission to raise the bar in “eatertainment” and reposition Punch Bowl Social as a leader in the industry. But their suc cess isn’t just about the partnership they have formed. It also comes from their focus on cre ating a premium food and beverage experience within the entertainment world.
While the eatertainment concept isn’t new, with the neighboring competition of Dave and Buster’s and TopGolf, Punch Bowl Social aims to set itself apart from the competition. When it comes to food and game concepts, typically, it’s either one or the other, but rarely both. “Everything we do revolves around food and beverage first,” says Flaherty. “We’re authentic and chef-driven in every restaurant we operate. It has always been one of the main differentiators from others with a similar concept.” To aid in this vision, they have a corporate culinary team that constantly looks at food innovations through research and development efforts to deliver simple and fresh—yet elevated—food experiences.
“Richard and I are part of the new Punch Bowl Social,” says Cornog. “We brought it out of bankruptcy. We had to re-launch ourselves and re-establish who we were.” Part of their relaunch included reworking the menu, offering new food experiences and hiring thousands of employees to get the business back up and running.
Regarding what the future holds for Punch Bowl Social, there are definite plans to add new locations (to be announced in 2023), just not in Denver. Beyond its physical expansion, there are plans to add a sister concept—Agave Room in Rancho Cucamonga, California, and several other locations, where guests can experience high-end tequila and mezcal offerings along side high-end Mexican fare. Their focus is on capturing the spirit of Punch Bowl Social but in a slightly higher-end, more-intimate setting.
“We recognize the opportunity to evolve the offerings within the same walls. It’s a great opportunity within the Punch Bowl Social ex perience to provide another opportunity to eat,
drink and socialize,” says Flaherty. And don’t fear: They say a version of something like this will make its way to Denver.
“Punch Bowl is back and stronger than ever,” says Flaherty. “It will continue to deliver on the promise of new locations and new experiences for our guests while becoming the iconic brand that it was destined to be.”

FAIRBANKS, ALASKA , hosts the World Ice Art Championships from mid-February through the end of March. Artisans from around the globe fight against frost and time to complete their masterworks by the championship deadline. Magnificent elephants emerge from the clear blocks, seemingly strolling through the woods of the Tanana Valley Fairgrounds. A school of crystal-clear salmon “swim” upstream. Polar bears, battling elk and even soaring fighter jets materialize from the glass-like ice. The event is one of the largest art exhibitions in the world and boasts more than 80 exquisite ice sculptures created by international carvers.
At the same time, the city is host to the International Ice Art Classic, which also features numerous ice sculptures plus ice slides and an extensive ice playground.
But if the ice isn’t enough of a draw, how about a little light show? “Aurora Season,” as it’s called, is from late August through late April in Fairbanks, and the aurora will be visible an average of four out of five nights when the sky is clear and dark enough. Hiring a guide service is best, and you’ll need reservations for indoor viewing areas. Aurora Point is a viewing venue designed for visitors to stay warm and dry
while taking in the natural phenomenon. There are several outdoor viewing sites if you want to brave the weather conditions. No matter which option you choose, there are no guarantees you’ll spot the ethereal green and sometimes purple and pink lights. But if you do, it’s an adventure you won’t soon forget.
