We all love to tell stories, hear stories and read stories. This is part of the human condition. It is especially important that children gain a love of reading and storytelling from an early age. Recent research studies show that children who experience early difficulties learning to read are unlikely to catch up to their peers and it is more likely that the gap in ability will widen as schooling progresses. We know that in Queensland approximately 36% of parents of 0-2-year-olds and 52% of parents of 3-8-year-olds do not regularly read to their children. To counter this, in 2016 we will be launching 1,000 Books Before Five, an adult-child early reading campaign to create a more literate society. Sign up to our newsletter for updates on 1,000 Books Before Five.
