AG Manifesto

Architecture is an ecosystem. In its most primitive form it provides the basic necessity of shelter. When connected with analogous mechanisms, architecture creates a complete system that works seamlessly within the biosphere. The success of the system is dependent upon the integration of the components. Thus, each building should be treated as an ecosystem; connected to its surroundings and components, as well as being responsible for its behavior. By maintaining sustainability, community engagement, functionality and inspiration in design, architecture has the power to inuence individuals to think differently about the way in which we live. These elements come together to create designs that function as an ecosystem; interactive and dependent upon one another, while also enriching the overall design of a space. When architecture acts in this manner it creates an organic response to the cultural systems at work in the world.

AMALGAM The New Rosedale School Studio Instructor Location Completed Partner

Amalgam: The New Rosedale School is a reinterpretation of grade school typology and accessibility. The Rosedale School is a K-12 Austin Independent School District (AISD) public school for students with severe disabilities. Currently situated in the north Austin neighborhood of Rosedale, the school plans to build a new complex in the neighborhood of Allendale to support their future growth and student needs. As part of their proposed expansion, the Rosedale School hopes to connect with the surrounding community even more than they currently do by expanding the vocational program for students and designing a more engaging campus.

The building consists of a thickened wall of public program providing a threshold between the surrounding neighborhood and the private classroom space. Nestled beyond this occupiable wall of program lay three school villages’ divided by age group, each with a centralized courtyard.

Classroom and sensory spaces were designed to accommodate the varying needs of the students. Building circulation was treated as informal gathering areas and places to foster social interaction.

Our movement though and experience of the landscape impacts our understanding of place and the relationship between our bodies and the environment, both highly constructed and seemingly natural. Our understanding is both personal and collective, being shaped by our itineraries, cultural perspectives, planned moments, and chance encounters. Building Blocks is an intervention in the urban environment of downtown Austin. Positioned at the end of a choreographed route and designed for inhabitation, Building Blocks goal is to encourage pedestrians to explore the city along various horizon lines. With the vehicle still being the most popular mode of transportation in Austin, the aim of the project was to allow pedestrians to experience various sight lines, particularly those that are normally reserved for vehicles.

RESETTLE Center for Food Innovation Studio Instructor Location Completed

The history of the West Fjords and northern coastal regions of Iceland involves the birthplace of 8th century Norse settlements. The unstable landscape of extreme climate and cataclysmic volcanic eruptions on the edge of the Arctic Circle made settlement difficult, and by the mid1870’s, impossible. Large numbers of emigrants from this region left for other countries. Today, much of rural Iceland continues to suffer from depopulation. Can we effectively model the Northern Atlantic landscape as a social harbor in its infancy and imagine a renaissance of stable communities in the region? Resettle focuses on Icelandic food culture and the greenhouse as a genesis for growth in the region. Allowing for an architectural response that reflects the exploration and curiosity of its occupants, the Center for Food Innovation interacts with its overwhelming landscape, acting both enigmatically and ambiguously within its context.

Resettle explores the concept of line in a landscape, providing a datum to reveal and intensify the sublimity of natural landscape. The building bifurcates the site to provide a passive edge against the mountains and an active edge adjacent to the fjord. The structure consists of a concrete foundation with a series of Glulam moment frames encased in a translucent polycarbonate shroud. The lightweight shroud obscures the interior of the greenhouse during daylight hours but is activated at night, creating a lighthouse for the fjord. 27

ASCEND Waller Creek Recreation Center Studio Instructor Location Completed

The new site of the Waller Creek Recreation Center is at the intersection of Cesar Chavez Street and the Waller Creek walking path: the object of a recent multimillion dollar international design competition for a new conservancy. Ascend serves to act as a community hub in this new vital area in downtown Austin. With a unique opportunity to address both the urban core of downtown Austin and reinforcement of the redeveloped natural creek edge, Ascend concentrates on the spatial and relational connections between the varying street and creek elevations and the diversity of user groups. By sloping the building from the creek to the street, Ascend explores the civic nature of the recreation center as a community hub while trying to strengthen the latent urban-landscape connection imbued within the site.

NEXUS Austin Energy Headquarters Studio Instructor Location Completed

Nexus: The Austin Energy Green Building Program Headquarters is a mixed use ofďŹ ce building located on the main paseo in the Mueller Development in Austin. The building was designed as an exercise in phenomenological transparency and the choreography of different users along the central thoroughfare of the Mueller Development, an active and social hub in the community. The program is arranged by changes in elevation with public spaces on the ground level, laboratories on the second level, and ofďŹ ces on the third level. As occupants circulate through the building they encounter various views into adjacent spaces allowing them to understand and interpret the systems and innovations taking place within the building.

The main structure of the building is enclosed in a double-glazed envelope on the facade allowing for visual reference to the structural system for viewers and occupants while also functioning as partitions for the cavity exhaust system in the facade. This shaft box facade, with vertical shafts separated by the structural columns, allow for natural stack-effect ventilation. The double-skin facade operates as an external air curtain, exhausting hot air through the cavity to the parapet wall on the roof. 42

In 2017 the studio partnered with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to design and build a shade structure at the Galveston Island State Park, one of the most visited parks in the state. The shade structure will be used by the environmental educator focusing on middle and high schools in the region. These students will use the shade pavilion for an orientation talk before they begin a bay walk. The shade pavilion is expected to serve between three and four thousand students and park visitors throughout the year who will use the built facility through the spring, winter, and fall when school is typically in session, and in the summer when the park offers bay tours for the public.

The four-hundred and fifty square foot structure sits on the bay’s edge nestled between yaupon holly sculpted by southwest winds. A short walk along an informal path from the parking through the hollies leads to the structure.
