the design school, ASU studio- spring 2019 integration of program, spaces and systems the idea was to take blocks of individual programs and to connect them systematically, strategically and funtionally replicating different mechanical units in an Automobile though individual but integrated to work as an individual unit.

site permeability and user experience The infrastructure acts as an activator between the community, students and the light rail, the ramp runs through the core of the building creating a public space/lobby between classrooms and workshop providing a vivid experience of the infrastructure at different levels.

By carefully considering flexibility, connectivity, environmentabilty and user experience resulted in an infrastructure integrated in terms of sytems, structure, services, program, spaces, user experience and environmental factors.

visual harmony and urban context the undulating form of the infrastructure is inspired from the mountains of San Marcos, complimenting the existing natural context, creating visual harmony without dsiturbing the existing urban context of the city. The slopes occured on the roof also acts as gutter for water drainage connected to the collection chamber undergound, making it independent of the water demands. The sloping roofs is integrated with Tesla solar panels reducing the dependence on external electricity source.

Materiality and inside outside relationship the louvered system in the infrastructure suspends and wraps the building depicting continuation, integration and singular materiality which counterbalances the complex form of the building. The horizontal louvers are derived from the surrounding building which follows the language of straight lineraity and industrial approach, complimenting the existing streetscape of the san marcos.

context...

In the aftermath of hurricane Maria, we witnessed the largest humanitarian crisis Puerto rico has ever faced. An Island home to 3.4 million people witnessed devastation. It lead to massive disruption in healthcare delivery, with prolonged loss of lives, and vital utlities such as energy, drinking water and millions of dollars of damage in Infrastructure and electricity systems. It lead to loss of jobs, closure of schools and hopelessness among the community. The project started by understanding the socio-political, cultural, climatic, architectural vocabulary, construction methods and critically examining emergeny management, disaster management, sustainability principles and basic infrastructure like power and water. The aim was to create more dynamic and resilient community, creating jobs, promoting health and wellness, spreading awareness and educating the community through adaptive reuse of the abandoned school at San Juan, Puerto Rico.

inserting new infrastructure within the original structure, creating hybrid of traditional and contemporary architecture, as a gesture to invite people inside the building

reusing another abondoned building on the site to act as external power storage for the site, hospital and community in times of emegency. Using solar panel tiles and rain water harvesting on the site.


The existing railing of the building was translated into contemporary contemplation of the new structure which cuts the building from the center and creates a hybrid contrast of the past and the future evoking a sense of hope to the people of Puerto Rico, despite the losses they suffered to look forward to the exciting future. The project aims to promote health and wellness among the community. The urban strategy was to facilate the streets connecting the community to the site, promoting walkability and cycling among the people. The site has been strategically designed to promote the public engagement and interaction among the community, acting as a blank canvas which people could use as the way they want. Paths are created in a way that it directs you inside the central space of the building and also connects both side of the street allowing flexible connectivity. The overall design is a contemporary implementation of the Puerto Rican culture, encouraging community engagement, creating courtyard. The Exoskeleton inserted at the center of the building is a modern gesture of hybrid architecture creating monumentality through parametric design, evoking curiosity and excitement among the people and breaking the montonous and old character of the building.

The mission of the South Phoenix Art Center is to engage, enlighten, and inspire our community by providing interactive art education, outreach to underserved audiences, support of artists, and exposure to the visual arts. Art of the American Southwest is the visual arts of the Southwestern United States including Arizona. These arts forms include architecture, ceramics, drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, printmaking, and other media, ranging from the ancient past to the contemporary arts like graffiti art of the present day. These programs are driven by the belief that the arts are a critical component to a healthy and active community. We have identified that there is no attention to art in the community of South Phoenix village. Therefore, taking arts as a medium to engage the community socially, through the community spaces, with art cting as a backdrop for the activities. The South Phoenix Community Arts Center’s program would provide quality art experiences for people of all ages, race, ethnicity and backgrounds. The design process The structure is the reection of the site context. The building openings have the direct relation to the fabric of the city fenestration. This connection helps the building interconnect to the existing context. The building material is in contrast with the surrounding neighborhood. It gives the building an identity, but at the same time draws attention to the landscape and the red brick city in the background. The building elevation follows the contour of the landscape, which gives you the choice to enter the building from different levels. The space activates your senses through the changes of interior elevations and scales, as well as the use of light and shadow.

The biodiversity of variety of plants and animals is what makes people visit and wonder in the canyon. The major part of the foundationfor this biodiversity is the rocks, the soiland the geological processes that formed and continue to form Ramsey Canyon. Slick rock, an ancient rock formed deep within the earth, is now exposed at the surface tells the changes that has taken place in the canyon.

The master plans cosnists of three zones Connecta place where one can evoke their consciousness, connect with themselves through meditation, looking at the nature, listening to the water stream nearby, listening to the chirping of the bird.

Technology and its vast usage among generations of people has shaped our social-economical life, it has also changed the way we learn, inform, behave, socialize or even communicate. It has become an important tool to explore problems but on the other hand it is also making people less critically involved in general tasks as they are getting disconnected with nature. Nature has a unique phenomenon of growing, healing, creating, innovating, evolving with the power to transform our lives by infusing all our senses. What if as a community we create a unique connection of nature and technology by influencing the way we learn about things. What if we create Architecture as a living organism responding to nature, inhabitants and wildlife. This unique connection can be a new way to evoke consciousness, curate curiosity, learn, discover, find connections and inspirations in nature. A place where anyone can be a scientist just by opening their consciousness, looking deeply in nature and with a desire to learn.

Learnlearn how the nature works, what mankes a canyon form and change over the time, learn the biological processes of flora and flauna, learn how bird’s fly, interact and migrate, learn about bio-architecture, bio-technology and the latest research going in the canyon.

the idea was to place the meditation pavillion just after the visitor center, allowing vistors to evoke their consciousness before starting the learning journey of the canyon. using the curved organic language of the nature, the geodesic dome literally merges with the nature. the pavillion is connected with a path to james house and cabin in order to reflect it’s rich history and architecture in the new pavillion.

the new media and research pavillion in connected to existing research pavillion in order to facilitate the existing research and allowing more flexibility, resources and learning experience fo teh visitors. The form of the pavillion mimics the natural phenomenon of twisting that occurs between the trees, similarly the two program media and research are binded together resulting in a new dynamic form evoloving from nature.

the idea was to place the bird pavillion near the new wetland project, attracting the more birds, hence more birds to the pavillion. Flower plants are planted on these pavillions to attract more birds, providing a unique experience of bird, architecture and humans. The inspiration for the form of the pavillion was taken from the pine cone which are very common in the canyon. the new path runs through the wetland and connects you through the pavillions.
