How Do I Sign Up for IRL? Step 1: Check out the IRL program catalog & choose what program(s) you want to sign up for. Step 2: Complete the IRL registration forms (with your parents). Step 3: Turn in your completed IRL registration forms at the IRL office, AMS main Office or to your teacher. CONFIRMATION: IRL will contact you to confirm enrollment & weekly schedule. 8th grade ONLY! Earn money towards your 8th grade Outer Banks (OBX) trip as we travel weekly to Brother Wolf Animal Rescue to work in service with animals. Discover your passion for service! REQUIREMENT: Students must commit to at least 6 weeks of involvement. Students can sign up for Session #1 (Sept. 14 - Nov. 2), Session #2 (Nov. 9 - Dec. 10), or BOTH! Latin Dancing—Mrs. Qualls Have you ever wanted to Dance with the Stars? Latin dance is gaining popularity on dance floors everywhere. Discover dance as a language of ideas, and explore the rich history and aesthetics of Latino cultures. Develop and hone your Spanish speaking and comprehension skills as we salsa and merengue. Heart & Sole (Monday & Thursday) - Mrs. Jennifer Ingle Attention Girls: Heart & Sole is the new program developed by Girls on the Run, made for middle school girls like you! TWICE A

WEEK we’ll talk about things you want to talk about, run, laugh, dream and even run a 5K together! (This program is open to all girls regardless of athletic ability or fitness level.) @AMS 6. West African Drumming -Mr. Adama Dembele Learn how the drumming and rhythms of the Ivory Coast and Mali are infused into music heard around the world though musicianship and performance. Participants are invited to attend Fall LEAF with their families free of charge. No LEAF performance is required. @AMS 7. Project EMPOWER – Ms. Bri & Mt. Zion Community Development Inc. Are you EMPOWERed about making positive decisions? We will discuss sensitive topics to include goal setting, characteristics of positive relationships, and teen pregnancy prevention. Tuesday 1. CrossFit Pisgah - Mr. Jackson If throwing your weight around and getting stronger and faster sound fun to you, then you need to sign up for CrossFit Kids! Each day we work on strength training and movements such as pull-ups, cartwheels, rope climbs and forward rolls, as well as play awesome games at our facility offcampus. Class meets @CrossFit Pisgah in the RAD. 2. Roots + Wings – Mrs. Ginger Huebner Become a citizen artist at the new Roots + Wings Creative Campus, where we will continue to be devoted to programming focused on art and design for community change. This class will include fieldtrips to local design projects and artist’s studios, and a celebration at the completion of class. @573 Fairview Road in Oakley. 3. Slacklibrium – Mr. Jesse & Mr. Patrick Tuesdays & Thursdays * same students both days* Have you seen our Slacklines on the trees in front of the school? Do outside distractions get in your way of task completion? This program is designed to help you develop self-awareness while having fun and learning a new skill. Slacklining is exercise, education, and entertainment for your body and mind! @AMS

4. Sports Fit – Mr. Watkins Have you had a hard day at school? Explore the rules of different sports including Basketball, Football, Kickball, and Dodgeball. You will have the opportunity to exercise, have fun, work in a team environment, and develop great sportsmanship!@AMS 5. 7. Darkroom Photography 101 – Ms. Adrian Etheridge You don't have to have a fancy camera to be a photographer. We will “go old school” as we build our own cameras out of shoe boxes! We will take photos using these cameras and then learn to process and develop them using chemicals in the darkroom. Learn about the history of photography and cinematography as we explore the amazing world of “a moment in time” photography. At the end of the semester we will matte one print to take home and display. @AMS

Wednesday IRL is for Academics BUG CAMP – Dr. Tim Forrest & Ms. Carson Insects rule! Partner with a REAL scientist from UNC-A (Dr. Tim Forrest) and Ms. Carson (6th grade) to experiment with science in a college laboratory each week! Now you can study the fascinating world of these sixlegged animals and their friends. Learn what makes insects so important in nature and why they are so adaptable. Use microscopes to get a close-up view of their internal and external parts. Go on field trips to collect and observe insects in the wild. Discover this different, smaller world and change your view of nature. This program will travel to UNC-A each week, arriving back at AMS at 5:30 each week.

ELA Skills *all skill levels* Writing and Reading Tutoring with Ms. Doherty Afterschool writing tutoring. You can tackle ANY writing homework help from Mrs. Doherty with focus on comprehension and critical thinking. Mrs. Doherty will sign your Reading Log. You will also read self-selected current events articles with writing practice . Reading Tutoring with Ms. Kalen After school Reading tutoring. You can tackle ANY kind of reading homework with help from Ms. Kalen with attention to comprehension and critical thinking. Ms. Kalen will sign your Reading Log. You will also read self-selected current events articles in an online platform called Curriculet. Our afternoon will fly by!

MATH Skills *all skill levels* Intermediate Math Tutoring – Mrs. Keupp Math class confusing you? Come sharpen your Math basic skills and strengthen your Math content knowledge with us every week afterschool. Homework time and individual homework help will be provided. Math Lab – Mr. Mikulski Looking for a relaxing and encouraging environment to improve your math skills? Are you struggling with concepts in your math class and could use extra help? Bring topics and work from your classes, or allow him to find practice best suited for you and made more fun with online tutorials.

Thursday 1. Printmaking & Mixed Media Ms. Sharon McRorie We will experiment with relief printing, monoprinting, stenciling and silk screening. Students will have the opportunity to combine media for one of a kind works of art. @ studio of the Asheville Art Museum.

2. Speech and Debate Mr. Smith (AHS) and Mr. Crooks (Parks & Rec.) Do you like to argue? Have people called you dramatic? Asheville High School has a nationally-ranked Speech & Debate team, and we're bringing it to the Middle School! Our coaches are partnering with UNCA, The Wesley Grant Center, & Parks and Rec, to help prepare you for competitive Speech and Debate. Speech & Debate will empower you to find your voice, speak your mind, and win arguments through strategy and persuasion. @Wesley Grant Center 3. We will be running the Starter Set adventure for students which is a great introduction to the world of role-playing. Pick the character you will play and learn the basics-fight goblins, use magic, solve puzzles and explore the world of sword and sorcery. Dice will be provided to all students. @AMS 6. Bike Club - Ms. Kristine This program is all about bikes! You'll learn how to get around by bike in Asheville. You will learn how your bike works, how to fix it, and the rules of the road so you can ride safely! Experience Asheville in a whole new way; get outside and ride around with your friends. Bring your own bikes! (Bikes and helmets may be provided as needed). Rides start @AMS

2. Future Leaders of Asheville (FLA) - Ms. Campbell Are you a leader, but your leadership skills are underdeveloped? FLA is for YOU! Developing Leadership Skills for Resilient Youth is a "Foundation of Leadership." This program is designed to improve personal development and help youth achieve their full potential in school, set personal goals, and become advocates for themselves and their community. @AMS

3. Getting Back To the Basics City of Asheville Police Department & Mrs. Robinson Join the Ashville Police Department & Mrs.Robinson for more support during and afterschool.
