CITIES & TOWNS 05

TANZANIA Tanzania is a country of stunning beauty, a kaleidoscope of landscape, wildlife and people. It is East Africa’s largest nation. Situated just below the Equator, it is bordered by shimmering lakes to the west and the Indian Ocean to the east. Its landscape varies from the green, tropical coastline to the semi-desert terrain of the central plateau, to the snow of the northern mountains. Tanzania possesses the largest and best game reserves in the world. It is the country where modern man may have originated and the home of many cultures – African, Arab, Asian and European.

06

More than a quarter of Tanzania consists of national parks, game reserves and controlled areas. It is, therefore, a country where, for the most part, nature still reigns and man gives way. Few places on earth can offer a wilderness so untouched, tranquility so profound or an escape so complete. Tanzania has a common border with Kenya. Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, is actually situated in Tanzania, close to this border. The total area of the country is 362,844 square miles, of which 20,645 square miles consist of inland bodies of water. Dar es Salaam is the largest city and capital.

07

HISTORY

East Africa has been called the “Cradle of Mankind” though this distinction has been linked with Olduvai Gorge, in the Ngorongoro Conservation Unit has provided significant landmarks in the study of man’s past. In 1978 at Laetoli, just south of Olduvai, Mary Leakey found footprints of three upright standing hominids in compacted volcanic ash, with had powdered the plains 3.7 million years ago. More recently the aboriginal inhabitants of present-day Tanzania were hunter-gatherers. Other tribes gradually moved in, seeking better land and displacing or absorbing the regions. The newcomers were Bantu, entering from the regions between the western lakes. By AD 1300 they had spread into the areas of heavy rainfall, leaving the plains to the Nilotic pastoralists who came down later from the north.

LAND Tanzania’s area measures 945,087 km squared (364,898 sq miles) in area and contains the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro which stands at 5,900m (19,340ft). The topography ranges from mighty volcanic and ancient crystalline mountains to rolling tableland, from great lakes to seemingly endless grasslands, dense miombo woodland to palm-fringed coral sands. The land is drops north to south by the eastern arm of the Great Rift Valley, the western fork of which, in the shape of Lake Tanganyika, helps to form Tanzania’s western border. The country’s eastern border is determined by the Indian Ocean, and in the South by the Rivuma River. To the north, the border with Kenya is more political than natural, except for a distinct kink around Kilimanjaro.

09

PEOPLE

There are 36 million Tanzanians, from more than 120 ethnic groups. No group is dominant and this, together with the Tanzanians’ generally easy-going and tolerant nature and Julius Nyerere’s non-functional ideals, has ensured continuing racial harmony. Most visitors will remain unaware of any underlying unease, and find Tanzanians, of whatever religion or ethnic origin, friendly, peace-loving and very hospitable. Ethnic Groups: It should be noted that the Maasai, fascinating and photogenic as they are, not in Tanzania. 95% of native Tanzanians are actually of Bantu origin, rather than Nilotic, as there are more than 120 ethnic groups

TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK Tarangire National Park is situated south of Arusha and is famous for its baobab (upside-down) trees. Large herds of elephant can be spotted there, as well as zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, giraffe, eland, impala and warthog. Tarangire is also considered one of the best of the northern parks for bird watching. The river is the park’s lifeline and attracts much of the game to its banks. You may also find some of the many leopards that rest by day in the shady trees. The park is also home to kudu with their immense spiral horns, and Oryx with their equally lengthy rapier horns. These shy, show-stopping antelope are common in Tarangire.

Tanzania’s 800km (500 mile) coastline is typically tropical, with a coral reef and long stretches of white sand, often backed by groves of coconut palm or stands of feathery casuarinas. Here and there this congruity of sea and sand is broken by estuaries or mangrove swamps, and in places low limestone cliffs and sea caves. Fascinating ruins at Kilwa and on Zanzibar tell of the coast’s history, while Bagamoyo, just opposite Zanzibar, became prominent as a mainland terminus of both the slave and ivory trade and the exploration of the interior. It lost its status when the Germans, recognizing the excellent natural harbour at Dar es Salaam, moved their administrative headquarters south in 1891. North of Bagamoyo is another stretch of coast, including Saadani National Park, Pagani and Tanga.

CHUMBE ISLAND ZANZIBAR ISLAND PEMBA ISLAND MAFIA ISLAND PRISON ISLAND

ISLANDS AND SHORES 34

Zanzibar lies low on the horizon opposite Bagamoyo, and often in cloud, as if mindful of its somewhat murky past. Nowadays, however, both Zanzibar and Pemba (to the north) are engaged in more innocent business, bringing in boatloads of tourists rather than slaves. A similar emphasis also inspires Mafia Island, which is further south and known for its big game fishing, snorkelling and diving. A marine park is now established here.

CHUMBE ISLAND Chumbe Island Coral Park. (CHICOP) is an award-winning private nature reserve that was developed from 1991 for the conservation and sustainable management of uninhabited Chumbe Island off Zanzibar, one of the last pristine coral islands in the region. The park includes a fully protected coral reef sanctuary and forest reserve that harbour extremely rare and endangered animals, a Visitor and Education centre, a small eco-lodge, nature trails and historical ruins. All buildings and operations are based on state-of-the-art eco-technology aiming at zero impact on the environment (rainwater catchment, photovoltaic energy and solar water heating, composting toilets, vegetative grey-water filtration etc.).

Zanzibar Island (known locally as Unguja, but as Zanzibar internationally) is 650 square miles. It is characterized by beautiful sandy beaches with fringing coral reefs, and the magic of historic Stone Town - said to be the only functioning ancient town in East Africa.Explore the forests, with their rare flora and fauna. Or visit some of the many ancient, archaeological sites. Spend a few days here before or after a safari on the Africa mainland or, better still, allocate a week or two and immerse yourself in the magic that is Zanzibar.

PEMBA ISLAND Unlike its neighboring flat and sandy Zanzibar, Pemba’s terrain is hilly, fertile and lushly vegetated. In the days of Arab traders it was even referred as the ‘Green Island’. Pemba’s Island coast is lined with mangroves and tidal creeks and lagoons, and Pemba is not a beach destination. However there are a few good stretches of sand and some idyllic offshore islets. In the surrounding waters, coral reefs, the steeply dropping walls of Pemba channel and an abundance of fish offer rewarding diving. Much of Pemba is relatively ‘undiscovered’ and you’ll still have things more or less to yourself, which is a big part of the island’s charm. CHAKE CHAKE Chake Chake is Pemba’s main town, set on a ridge overlooking Chake Chake Bay. Chake Chake is a good base for diving and excursions to Misali. Although it has been occupied for centuries, there is little architectural evidence of its past other than ruins of an 18th century fort near the hospital, and some ruins at nearby Ras Mkubuu. PRISON ISLAND Also known as Changuu Island (also known as Kibandiko, Prison or Quarantine Island) is a small island 3.5 miles (5.6 km) north-west of Stone Town, Unguja, Zanzibar. The island is around 880 yards (800 m) long and 250 yards (230 m) wide at its broadest point. The island saw use as a prison for rebellious slaves in 1860s and also functioned as a coral mine. The British First Minister of Zanzibar, Lloyd Mathews, purchased the island in 1893 and constructed a prison complex there. No prisoners were ever housed on the island and instead it became a quarantine station for yellow fever cases. The station was only occupied for around half of the year and the rest of the time it was a popular holiday destination. More recently the island has become a government-owned tourist resort and houses a collection of endangered Aldabra Giant Tortoises which were originally a gift from the British governor of the Seychelles.

TOURS AND ACTIVITES You can board a local dhow and head towards Prison Island famous for its prison and Giant Tortoises which are the main attraction. The beautiful beach is an ideal spot for sunbathing and the clear waters lend to clear sunbathing and the clear waters lend to excellent snorkelling.

MOUNT KILIMANJARO

Rising from the surrounding plains like a mirage, the snow-capped peaks of Kilimanjaro – only three degrees south of the Equator – were believed for years to be nothing but fanciful tales. Kilimanjaro is highest mountain in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. It is actually three volcanoes in one: Kibo, the youngest, highest, and most central point at 5,896 metres (19,340 feet); Mawenzi in the east at 5,149 metres (16,889 feet). Previously thought to be extinct, the mountain is in fact dormant and may yet have capacity to erupt as all three undoubtedly did during their formation. From the time of its first mention several thousand years ago by Ptolemy, the snows of Kilimanjaro have continued to attract explorers, scientists, adventurers, climbers, and tourists from around the world. With its white mantle dominating the horizon, Kilimanjaro, as much as the wildlife that lives and feeds in its shadow, has now come to symbolize the continent of Africa.

CLOTHING: - Decent pair of trekking boots - Thick thermal pairs of Socks - Down Jackets or several fleeces - Thermals (underwear) - Trekking trousers - Sun hat - Wooly or fleecy hat - Gloves - Waterproof Jacket - T-shirts & Shorts (Summer clothes) 44

CLIMATE - Kilimanjaro is affected by the passage of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, which brings with it the main rainy periods. The highest rainfall occurs between mid-March and early May, and slightly less between the beginning of November and late December. - Precipitation on the summit is about 100mm. per year; this coupled with the very porous ash soils results in the Saddle being considered a high altitude desert. Rain and, higher up, snow, can however be encountered at any time of year - even in the driest periods (January, February and September). - Normally the drier seasons are associated with clear, dry weather which can last for weeks on end. The best weather is generally encountered in the mornings, and convectional rainfall, if any, tends to come in mid-afternoon. After long periods of dry weather some of the higher streams dry up. - Temperatures vary considerably with height and time of day. On the plains surrounding Kilimanjaro the average temperature is about 30°C. At 3000m. frosts can be encountered at night while day time temperatures range from 5 to 15°C. Night time temperatures on the summit can be well below freezing.

49

LAKE NATRON

Uniqueness is hard to claim nowadays, but this attraction surely qualifies. Wild and remote Lake Natron lies in the northeast of Tanzania in between the Ngorongoro Highlands and Serengeti plains. Situated at the base of Africa's only active volcano Oldonyo L'Engai (Mountain of God). Lake Natron is one of the most alkaline lakes in the world. Home to millions of tiny crustaceans, the lake is a haven for literally thousands of lesser flamingo's and it is one of the most important flamingo breeding grounds on earth. Here it is the landscape rather than the animals that is the attraction - the area around the lake is dry, desolate and hauntingly beautiful.

ACTIVITIES: - Visit the Maasai community - Take a humbling walk on the vast soda flats - Trek to the waterfalls - Relax in the crystal stream by your tent 50

LAKE EYASI Lake Eyasi is starkly beautiful lying at about 1,000m between the Eyasi Escarpment in the north and the Kidero Mountains in the south. It’s a hit, dry area, around which the Hadzabe tribe live. They are believed to have settled in this area some 10,000 years ago and still follow hunting and gathering traditions. Their language is characterized by clicks and may be distantly related to that of Southern Africa’s San. Lake Eyasi makes a rewarding detour on a Tanzanian Northern Circuit for anyone looking for something remote and different. ACTIVITIES: - Visit a Hadzabe (Bushmen of East Africa) Village - Bird watching - Walking safaris - Cultural Tour 51

LAKE VICTORIA Lake Victoria is Africa’s largest lake and the second largest freshwater lake in the world. The best way to explore the lake region is as part of your safari combining with Tanzania’s northern circuit attractions via the western Serengeti. Some ideal attractions include Rubundo Island National Park and Saa Nane Bird Sanctuary. Well-known for its scenic beauty, Lake Victoria is also a fishery of vast potential, the main commercial species being the ubiquitous and delicious tilapia.

ACTIVITIES: - Relaxing and birding in serene Rubondo Island National Park - Exploring on slow travel the Bukoba and surrounding Haya heartland - Learning about the Sukuma at the Bujora Cultural Centre near Mwanza - Delving into history at the Nyerere Museum at Batiama

LUKUBA ISLAND GETTING THERE: BY ROAD

Lukuba Island is found on Northwest in Tanzania and comprises of two islands plus numerous islets. The islands are fringed by lush vegetation and dotted with the massive boulders. In addition toseveral small villages and seasonal fishing camps, the islands are home to monitor lizards, red monkeys and dozens of bird species – about 70 have been identified thus far. They make an enjoyable excursion from Musoma, especially if you are interested in getting a feel for life on the Lake, or in birding. Don’t miss climbing one enormous, flat-topped boulder for spectacular sunset views. Staff at Lukuba Island Lodge can show you the way. 54

ATB will transfer you to Musoma and then a boat transfer will take you to the Island.

ACTIVITIES - Bird watching - Wildlife watching - Photography - Sundowners

RUBONDO ISLAND Rubondo Island is tucked in the southwest corner of Lake Victoria, the world's second-largest lake, an inland sea sprawling between Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. With nine smaller islands under its wing, Rubondo protects precious fish breeding grounds, great birding experiences, fishing, quiet beaches and low-key rewarding wildlife watching which include: chimpanzees, crocodiles, giraffes, elephants and the Sitatunga Antelope. Rubondo Island offers a unique experience from other Tanzanian parks and is a well worth option.

GETTING THERE BY AIR: Scheduled flights from Arusha, Lake Manyara, Serengeti and Mwanza in peak season, charter flights only in low season.

BY ROAD: ATB will transfer you to Mwanza and then a boat transfer will take you to the Island. 55

LAKE TANGANYIKA Lake Tanganyika is the world’s longest freshwater lake in the world and the second deepest, outside only by Siberia’s Lake Baikal. It vast waters host one of the richest and most varied collections of fish – more than 250 different species. These facts, coupled with Lake Tanganyika’s age, have made it one of the most biologically rich and scientifically valuable habitats in the world. More than 500 fish species live in Lake Tanganyika. However, its great depth and lack of water turnover make its depths into 'fossil water', which lacks oxygen. Almost all of Lake Tanganyika's fish therefore live above a depth of 600 feet. 56

GETTING THERE: BY AIR Fly from Arusha with scheduled flights (Mondays & Thursday’s). Upon arrival you will be transferred on a short boat ride across Lake Tanganyika to Lupita Island.

ACTIVITIES - Kayaking - Canoeing - Snorkelling - Scuba diving - Water skiing and sailing - Spot fishing

STONE TOWN Stone Town is the oldest section of Zanzibar Town and is made up of a labyrinth of winding lanes, ancient stone houses, Arabian arches, heavy carved wooden doors, circular towers, narrow latticed windows, overhanging balconies and a fascinating selection of bazaars, curio shops, art galleries and spice troves. Considered by many to be the heart of Zanzibar, Stone Town is the only functioning historical city in East Africa and remains much the same today as it was 200 years ago - alive with a bustling crowd of ‘bui bui' veiled women, travelling tea sellers, banks of old men chatting on the ‘baraza' (benches) of the alleys, skulking cats and laughing children. In amongst its tortuously twisting lanes is also a fascinating cross-section of history - the Portuguese Fort, the Sultan's Palace, the old Dhow Port, the Old Slave Market, the House of Wonders, the Old Dispensary and the home of arch slaver, ‘Tippu-Tip', to name but a few.

TRAVEL INFO WEATHER Along the coast of the Indian Ocean the weather is very hot and humid. However, our tour routes are located further inland where the elevation is higher and the climate is quite a bit cooler and drier. Because of their proximity to the equator, Tanzania does not experience “summer” and “winter”. Instead, the year is divided between rainy and dry seasons. It can actually get quite chilly at the higher altitudes like Ngorongoro Crater, and it is wise to be prepared for both warm and cool weather.

ELECTRIC TRAVEL PLUG Going on Safari to Tanzania you will need to bring both the electric travel adapter D and G. Electric plug D has the official name BS 546 (5 A/250 V earthed). This plug is commonly used in countries colonized by the British. Plug G also known as the standard British 3-pin rectangular blade plug or the “13-amp plug”. The official name is BS 1363 (British 13 A/230-240 V 50 Hz earthed and fused).

INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS

PASSPORTS AND VISAS

It never gets really cold in Tanzania so lightweight clothing is the norm. On safari avoid brightly coloured clothes, they may alarm the animals. Browns, beiges and khaki are preferred. Short-sleeve shirts or blouses and shorts are ideal, but pack a sweater, it can be chilly in the early morning and in the evening. Wear a hat to avoid sunstroke and don’t forget a swimsuit. Shoes should be sensible – walking through the bush is not like strolling through Hyde Park and for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru take thermal underwear, a rain jacket, good socks and sturdy boots. Shorts for women are acceptable but not too short. Women should carry a wrap to cover their legs in towns or villages as revealing clothes can cause offence, especially in Zanzibar and other Muslim areas. On the beach, and within the confines of beach hotels, normal swimwear is acceptable.

- From Amsterdam KLM flies to Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro. - From Zurich Swiss Air fly to Dar es Salaam via Nairobi - From Heathrow British Airways fly direct to Dar es Salaam, three times weekly - From India Air India fly to Dar es Salaam via Mumbai - From Emirates Fly Emirates fly via Dubai - Ethiopian Airlines fly via Addis Ababa - Qatar Airways fly via Doha

Most visitors require visas with the exception of citizens of certain countries of the Commonwealth. It is advisable to obtain them in advance from them in advance from Embassies and High Commissions as several airlines insist on them prior to departure. They can however also be obtained on arrival, at all points of entry. Requirements may changes so you are advised to contact the appropriate diplomatic or consular or authority before finalizing your travel arrangements. Although part of the union of Tanzania, Zanzibar remains independent, so passports/ Tanzania visas are required even on a day’s visit. Your passport must be valid for at least six months after the start of the trip.

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS

REGIONAL CARRIERS into Tanzania include: Precision Air, Kenya Airways, South African Airways and Air Kenya

INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS International flights serve Dar es Salaam (DAR)airport, 8 miles or 12 Kilometers from the city centre and Kilimanjaro (JRO), 31 miles or 50 kilometers from Arusha. Zanzibar (ZNZ) airport is 5 miles from or 8 Kilometers Kisauni.

DRINKING WATER Do not drink tap water anywhere, always drink bottled water.

Your passport, visa, credit card info, and other important documents should be photo-copied and the copies should be carried separately in case of loss of the originals. I suggest that you photo-copy the front page of your passport, with all of the pertinent data, and copy the page(s) on which are stamped the visas for Tanzania and Kenya. The numbers, expiry dates, etc. of your credit cards and other important personal effects (even the serial numbers of your camera equipment, binoculars, etc.) should be written or typed on a list which can also be photo-copied to give you an extra record of them.

IMMUNIZATION & HEALTH

WHAT TO TAKE

CURRENCY

PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEOGRAPHY

The UK Department of Health recommends vaccinations against hepatitis A, polio and typhoid. It is essential for visitors to take course of anti-malaria tablets, starting two weeks before travel.

Don’t forget the digital camera and binoculars and takes a torch for finding your way around your camp at night. Stock up with replacement batteries for all these goods.

The unit of currency is Tanzanian Shilling which is divided into 100 cents.

There restrictions in taking photos; do not take photos at airports, people without their permission, police or military personnel or their installations, government officials or presidential facilities and their motorcade. You can however take as many pictures wildlife and nature related.

Travellers arriving from or via countries where yellow fever is endemic will need a Certificate of Vaccination. Vaccination is available on arrival at a cost of $US50 Per Person. Modern medical services are available in the major cities but tourists are likely to find themselves in remote locations far from these major centres. Cover for medical evacuation is therefore recommended in case of a medical emergency. This is especially relevant to those climbing Kilimanjaro. There are only a limited number of chemists in the country so visitors are advised to bring their own medicine with them

Take sun-glasses, hat, sun lotion, lip balm – and some insect repellent, it is better not to get stung even if you are taking anti-malaria tablets . It is better to take any medicines required for the duration of the visit. A spare pair of glasses or contact lenses is also a good idea. Take plenty of film if you have to, it is difficult to obtain outside the main centres. While traveller’s cheques can be exchanged in cities and towns, banking facilities in remote areas are restricted, so take plenty of cash.

LANGUAGE English is widely spoken but a few words of Swahili are always appreciated

Most major currencies particularly US Dollars and travellers’ cheques are accepted and convertible at banks and bureaux de change in the main towns and tourist areas. Do not change money in the street however favourable the rate appears. It should be noted that all properties accept credit cards and certain cards, particularly Diners and American Express, are frequently refused even by major hotels. Mastercard and VISA are preffered

TRAVEL LIGHT Some safaris or air charters limit baggage to a 10-15 kilo maximum.

Batteries can be recharged at the lodges if the chargers are universal voltage capable. It is a good idea to have more than one battery for your cameras. Be sure to have enough data storage cards, or some other way of saving your digital files until you return home. Some lodges and tented camps provide converters to guests. Video cameras are a great thing to take on safari. You should have 2 or more spare batteries. Check your charger voltage requirement. It should be universal, or compatible with the above-mentioned voltages. Eight to twelve hours of premium quality tape should be sufficient.
