Welcome
Players, Coaches and Teachers We, St Andrew’s Secondary School, would to welcome all of you here at the St Andrew’s Village, where the 2016 Saints 7s would be held. The Saints 7s started in 2009 with the intention of promoting rugby by providing schools in Singapore more opportunities to play 7s rugby. With 7s rugby being included in the recent SEA Games and is included as an Olympic Sports in the 2016 Rio Olympics, there was a need to provide more exposure for school players in Singapore. When the first edition was held in 2009, there was only other 7s tournament for schools was the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) 7s. However, the SCC 7s has limited slots for schools’ participation. Thus, we decided that the Saints 7s will be opened to ALL rugby playing schools in Singapore and in the following years, to overseas education institutions. Being prudent, the inaugural Saints 7s started with only one age group, Under-16 Category. The first challenge trophy was named in
honour of our then long serving Principal, Mrs Belinda Charles. The 2009 Saints 7s was such a success that it even caught the attention of Singapore Rugby Union. They followed suit and organised the National schools 7s in the following years, thus forming an unofficial 7s series for local schools. The initial suc- cess gave us the impetus to expand the competition. Today, the Saints 7s comprises of 3 different age categories. For the current 8th edition of the Saints 7s, we are extremely pleased to announce that at press time, there are 26 schools, providing over 42 teams, participating across categories. Being true to our ethos being inclusive, the Saints 7s committee has accepted the all timely applications of all schools who had been invited to participate as we strive to be the perfect host of the best School 7s in Singapore. As an effort to spice up the competition, the organising committee had extended the invitation beyond our shores. We are pleased
to announce that our beloved overseas friends St Peter’s College from Sri Lanka, will be gracing our humble event. Together with SCC 7s and now National Schools 7s, Saints 7s is one of the premier school boy 7s rugby tournaments in Singapore. Beyond the competition, we would like to promotes greater socialising and interaction amongst local schools, international schools as well as overseas schools. The organising committee would like to encourage to all the participating teams to Play Hard, Play Safe and Play Fair. Together, we can make 7th edition of the Saints 7s a bigger success than before. Let the 7s begin!

Principal’s Message
In its 8th year, the Saints Rugby 7s is without a doubt a key rugby fixture in the schoolboy rugby calendar in Singapore and even for some schools in the region! This year, we are proud to host teams from 26 schools across Singapore as well as from overseas. Rugby was first played in Singapore at the school level at St Andrew’s School 82 years ago. The sport gained popularity among boys’ schools that not only played ferociously against one another but also against various armed forces and civilian sides both local and expatriate. In many respects the sport of rugby in Singapore is synonymous with St Andrew’s School. In rugby, every single player counts and it is a point of honour to be well-versed in the rules and to play strictly according to the rules. Most of all, rugby is a sport in which the well-being of your opponent is paramount even as you aim to be the toughest challenger he’s ever met, you always look out for his safety in the way you play your game. The School seeks to live out these unique rugby values both on and off the field. Not everyone is meant to be a rugby player, there are so many others without whom the tournament would not be able to go ahead this weekend, they include: our ushers, first aid crew, sports officials, photographers and journalists just to name a few. More than 160 students have been working hard in the run up to the tournament and they keep it going behind the scenes. In the process, they are learning many values and skills. Finally, I would like to thank all those who have made this event possible for the boys. Parents, alumni, staff and friends from all the schools and, especially from our brother school St Andrew’s Junior College, thank you! A special note of appreciation goes out to the Singapore Rugby Union without which this event would not have been possible. On behalf of St Andrew’s Village, may I wish every team a great rugby weekend! Mrs Lucy Toh Principal St Andrew’s Secondary School

George Danapal Saints 7s started very small in 2009 with 6 teams participating in one age category. Having been part of the team that conceptualized this tournament in 2009 and having been the chairman of the organizing committee for the last 7 years, it gives me great pleasure to pen this foreword for the 2016 edition in my capacity as General Manager Singapore Rugby Union. This year St Andrew’s Secondary School will play host to 42 teams across 3 different age categories. It is indeed heartening to see this tournament grow from strength to strength every year. Saints 7s has left an indelible mark on the schools rugby 7s scene in Singapore and is now a permanent fixture in Singapore rugby calendar. This tournament is an extremely important for young 7s players. It gives players of all abilities to pitch their skills against one another. It is also the only tournament in Singapore which has a mix of local schools, international schools and overseas schools. It is also a perfect platform for young players to test themselves and build friendships with players from differing backgrounds and around the region. To the local landscape, Saints 7s has played an integral part in exposing players to a full scale rugby 7s event. It has also helped to develop a number of state representatives. The recent Singapore SEA Games squad had a number players who had honed their skills at the Saints 7s in during their school days. In future, I will not be surprise if there will be an increasing number of upcoming national team 7s players, who will count the Saints 7s as an important tournament, which has aided their development. Rugby 7s was included in the Olympics and in the next few SEA games. On top of that, Singapore successfully hosted one leg of the HSBC World 7s Series in April last year. The profile of this game is growing exponentially and it is heartening to see that Saints 7s has had kept up with times and continues to prove that it is an important tournament in the development of future stars of Singapore 7s rugby. I wish all the players, officials, volunteers, parents and spectators a wonderful weekend of rugby. Lastly, I would like to thank the organizing committee for their time and effort in putting this tournament together for the kids. It is a thankless task and I know they do it because they love the game and they love doing it for the kids. Up and On! George D Danapal General Manager Singapore Rugby Union

Charlie Brown On behalf of the Singapore Society of Rugby Union Referees (SSRUR) and as the Referee Manager for Singapore Rugby Union, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this year’s Saints 7s. Having been involved in this tournament for a number of years myself as a referee, those selected to officiate over the weekend are fully aware of the high level of skill and passion that will be on show over the weekend. SSRUR has a proud history of providing match officials for Saints 7s and many of those who have refereed in the tournament have gone on to officiate at International level such as the Asia Sevens Series and the World Series Sevens. A number of the referees selected for this year’s Saints 7s have been identified as having the potential to reach these same heights and I am delighted that Saints 7s offers the ability to assist in their development. With the game now into it’s 3rd decade of full professionalism and the 7s variation now an Olympic sport, the importance of developing a strong youth platform has become increasingly important. The same can be said of referees. In recent years SSRUR has placed a higher emphasis on recruitment of younger referees here in Singapore. Indeed on our latest Match Official course, there were no less than ten participants under the age of eighteen. A number of these attendees have since taken up refereeing, including Saint Andrews student, Aiden Jelenik. Aiden is currently fourteen years old and has been refereeing in local youth competitions, receiving praise from spectators and team coaches alike. We look forward to seeing Aiden and our other young referees officiating at this tournament in future years. SSRUR is not only committed to developing talent within Singapore, it also supports the development of match officials from our neighbouring rugby playing nations. As part of a partnership between SSRUR and overseas Referee Societies, we welcome Mohd Redzuan Bin Abidin and Mohd Fazly bin Mohd Salleh from Malaysia, H. P. P. Weranga from Sri Lanka and Suwat Mapijan from Thailand to this year’s tournament. All four of our visiting referees have been identified as up and coming talents for the future by their home societies, and we wish them the very best of luck at the tournament this week. I would like to wish all the players, officials, volunteers, parents and spectators a wonderful weekend of rugby. I would also like to pay a special tribute to Saint Andrews School and the organising committee for their efforts in not only putting together this tournament, but also in supporting the development of refereeing in Singapore throughout the season. Sunny Seah I am delighted that the rugby aficionados of St Andrew’s Village will once again host the Saints 7s Tournament this year at the Village, now in its 8th edition. The Saints 7s started in 2009 and has since become a major tournament in our local rugby calendar which now involves most of our youth rugby players from across several age categories and beyond our local schools. The tournament has even managed to attract a handful of returning foreign teams from neighbouring countries. The game of Rugby 7s has gained popularity over the years and with its inclusion in the Commonwealth Games (since 1998), SEA Games (2015) and Olympics (2016), and together with the other rugby codes (Union and League), it has become one of the fastest growing sports globally with over 20 million players registered from over 90 countries and watched on cable by an equally enthusiastic and growing home audience fans of over 100 million. The Saints 7s provides a great platform for our youth players of today from both local and international schools to hone and develop their rugby playing skills towards a national team call-up or the opportunity to represent their country at the international stage. Already, some of the players from the Saints 7s earlier editions have earned their coveted spots on our Singapore national squad. In time, we hope to find our very own 7s exponent in the likes of Fijian Maestro Waisale Serevi, Kiwi legends Jonah Lomu and Christian Cullen. The event would not be possible without the generous support of the event sponsors, the hard work of the organizing committee and Saints parent volunteers. I would like to acknowledge them for their perseverance and commitment to continuously deliver a top notch rugby competition event year after year. On behalf of the Singapore Rugby Union and the Saints Rugby Football Club, I would like to welcome players of the 42 participating teams, their parents and supporters to a weekend of fun and excitement filled rugby. My best wishes to all teams and players for a memorable outing at the Saints 7s. Mr Sunny Seah Vice President, Singapore Rugby Union Exco Member, Saints Rugby Football Club

Special Feature - Kon Yin Tong
As a Saint, Mr Kon learnt many lessons. The one that stood out the most was from his form teacher, Mrs Elizabeth Choy. It was a simple one - ‘If you can help others, you should’. As an impressionable 10year old, these words inspired and continue to inspire him today. Inspirational mentors and teachers such as Mrs Choy are one of the many reasons why he is proud to be a Saint.
`If you can help others, you should’ “It is not difficult to help others”, says Mr Kon. There are many ways to do it. “Organisations can play their part by offering flexible employment opportunities, providing bursaries, and sponsoring teams or tournaments like the Saints 7s”. When asked why sports, and why rugby in particular, his answer is simple. “In a sport like rugby, we learn to make sacrifices to be part of a team. We also work hard to achieve goals through regular communication, practice and training, upholding sportsmanship and respecting the law. Rugby helps to build camaraderie and character, nurtures leaders, and inspires people. In his experience in business, these are important too. Both business and sport require similar life skills for success”. Playing a sport fosters discipline and competitiveness. It requires commitment, builds menial and physical fortitude by handling success and failure, and overcoming adversity. Sport teaches us that there is a difference between winning and high endeavour, the latter being the harder and tougher achievement. It is his belief that playing sport puts individuals in good stead to handle the vicissitudes of life. “Many great sports-persons tasted defeat before success. This is similar to life, and business”, says Mr Kon.
Mr Kon Yin Tong, Deputy Chairman of Sport Singapore, was educated in St Andrew’s School from 1970 to 1979. His brothers, two sons and nephew are Saints too. In this special feature written for the 2016 Saints 7s tournament, we find out a bit more about his sporting philosophy and how sport is relevant to business.
He also believes that individuals should give back or pay forward to society. This could be in many forms, from pro-bono work to donations. In addition, as parents and coaches, one can provide proper guidance and emphasise core values and life skills to help in character building. Without this, sport is in danger of creating self-centered characters with inflated egos. Mr Kon helps whenever he can. The Saints 7s tournament features teams from the region, and from non-traditional rugby playing schools. It is an inclusive tournament, featuring also international schools. There is much diversity, something that he values. For this tournament, he supports it because he is also a Saint. And Saints unite through rugby.

Belinda Charles
CHALLENGE TROPHY - UNDER-16 CATEGORY
Mrs Belinda Charles got her first taste of teaching as an 18 year old when her former Marymount Convent School principal called to ask for help in relief teaching. From the moment she walked into the classroom, she was hooked to being an educator. Mrs Charles who was awarded the Pub- lic Administration Medal in 1996 just loved teaching and never regretted a moment in her education career. In 1990, Mrs Charles joined the St Andrew’s family and served 20 years as principal – 12 years at the junior college and 8 years at the secondary school. She was the driving force in bringing the kindergarten, primary and secondary schools and the junior college together as St Andrew’s Village in Potong Pasir in 2006. Although retired with distinction at the end of 2010, she is still actively involved with the St Andrew’s family, especially in rugby – the pride and joy of the school. A firm believer that a school should be a wonderful collection of memories of growing up, discovering one’s abilities in class and on the field and developing good relationships with one another, Mrs Charles credits rugby as an integral part of the St Andrew’s school experience. “It creates camaraderie and bonding and it is shared not just by players but by spectators because all spectators understand something of the game, calling out a wonderful school spirit.” She also added that “It is no accident that one line of our school song says ‘Play the game, keep the flame burning brightly ever.’’ Besides being a vital and meaningful school tradition that students share with those who have passed ahead of them, rugby teaches
values too. Mrs Charles considers it important to teach students that excellence does not only apply to academic grades. Students also learn that hard work and perseverance can result in success. “This is evident in the way the Saints have a strong desire to root for the underdog and are extremely tolerant and supportive of people who may not have been seen by the world to have ‘made it’,” said Mrs Charles. Not only this, the boys also learn teamwork and compassion. “There’s a lot of rough play and jostling but in the midst of it all, the boys get a sense of who’s weaker and who needs to be helped and they work as a team to complement one another’s strengths and weaknesses.” It is undeniable that rugby is an essential part of St Andrew’s School, but more than that, it has also become a significant part of Mrs Charles’s life. “If you had asked me 25 years ago what rugby meant to me, the answer would have been ‘Nothing, it’s just another game’,” admitted Mrs Charles. “I learnt the excitement of the game through the patient tutelage of old boys who would patiently sit with me through the matches and explain what I was seeing and what the referee was doing. I learnt to share the victories and as importantly share the disappointments when we lost, and in doing so, became part of the family. Today, because of St Andrew’s, the game of rugby is the only game I will watch and the only one I can get excited about,” said Mrs Charles proudly. The Saints 7s U16 competition trophy has been named the Belinda Charles Challenge Shield in honour of Mrs Charles for all the work, support and love she has put into St Andrew’s Rugby.

Leow Kim Liat
CHALLENGE TROPHY - UNDER-14 CATEGORY
Mr Leow Kim Liat is a legend, not only in St Andrew’s rugby, but in Singapore’s rugby history too. Starting off as a scrum half in St Andrew’s C Division team in 1964 and then becoming the school’s first XV Captain in 1968, he captained the Saints to numerous championships as well as the first “Kiwi Cup”. Mr Leow was the first of four brothers to represent both the School and State in Rugby, and all four brothers were school prefects. In addition to representing the School in Rugby, he also earned school and district colours in athletics, hockey and cricket. He became the first local to captain Singapore’s National Rugby team upon leaving St Andrews and was a stalwart of the first all local national rugby team leading his team to an admirable 4th placing in the Asian Rugby Football Union Tournament. He played for a number of years on the national team and on the Singapore Cricket Club Rugby Section 1st XV, retiring from competitive rugby in the mid 80s. Though retired, Mr Leow is still fond of the sport and believes that rugby has made him the person that he is today. To Mr Leow, rugby is not only a game. It is also a way of life. Playing rugby has taught Mr Leow many things and he still holds on to them till this very day. Discipline and temperament are some key lessons he has learnt from the time on the field, learning to control his temper in
times of stress and to lead under pressure. In order to find time for training, he had to be very disciplined and focused, balancing the demands of preparation for the sport and work and studies. “Rugby is a game that demands your maximum and this made me push myself more and more, not just physically, but also mentally since rugby is a game of strategy as well” he recalls fondly. The lessons of discipline and balancing time are evident today as he balances running his own business with volunteer work and spending time with his family. He was for a number of years the Vice President of the Singapore Cricket Club and now serves on various boards within the Methodist Church in Singapore. He still finds time to play recreational golf and tennis as a way to keep physically fresh for daily challenges. Beaming with pride and joy as he reminisces on the days of glory, it is apparent that Mr Leow’s passion for rugby has never diminished. He hopes that school rugby players will continue with the sport and keep the flame burning even after their school years with the numerous platforms on offer both locally and regionally. He acknowledges that the Saints 7 is definitely one of these avenues and he looks forward to another great tournament this year, hopefully with his grandson in tow.

Fat Boys - The Burger Bar
Fatboy’s The Burger Bar was born in 2009 from an enduring passion for wholesome, hearty and handcrafted burgers. Just as rice is to Asians, we have always believed that burgers are a staple meal for the world. Inspired by the classic American diner, we are Singapore’s answer to the old school Mom and Pop burger and milkshake joints. Black and white motifs, checkered tiles and jukebox favourites instantly transport you back to the 1950’s.While the classic bun-and-patty combination is no stranger to the sunny shores of food-obsessed Singapore, we chose to sidestep the limelight of mass production. Instead, our focus is purely on serving fresh and novel grub – just the way a true blue burger lover would want it. Growing in Size and Name The story of Fatboy’s The Burger Bar humbly began from a standalone diner at Upper Thomson in 2009. Word got out soon enough about our new burger joint in the hood, despite zero dollars having ever gone into marketing or conventional advertising. Within just the first few months after the first outlet’s establishment, we were becoming a regular name in local media. The brand has now beefed up to a total of eight outlets in order to keep up with demand. Two years after our first establishment, we opened up three more outlets in Singapore (Katong in 2011, Pasir Panjang in 2012, and Far East Plaza in 2013). Four outlets in Malaysia have also popped up over the last couple of years in Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru as well. We’ve been visibly packing on the pounds over the last five years, and we’re working towards achieving epic proportions. Pretty soon, the rest of our neighbors in Asia will be getting a piece of Fatboy’s, too. The Evolution Begins Being true-blue burger aficionados, we knew that likeminded individuals would want to sink their teeth into more than just brawn. This was how
the birth of Fatboy’s came with the tagline: Rethink Your Burger, keeping the serious intellect in mind. We incorporated a ‘build your own burger’ concept with traditional table service and menu ordering so that customers could whip up their favourite burgers of choice, while still enjoying the comfort and convenience of a restaurant envi- ronment. Math whizzes would know that it is nearly impossible to have tried ‘everything’ from Fat- boy’s, with over 25 toppings, 11 sauces and four types of buns and patties to experiment with. Have fun building your own burger through permutations could that easily hit the thousands. We daresay that no two people have ever had the same outcome if they’ve put some thought into it. No B.S. Just Burgers. To call burgers ‘junk’ or ‘fast’ food would be a crime at Fatboy’s when all ingredients are fresh as can be, and the sauces have painstakingly concocted by Bernie over years of researching and tasting. No processed or packaged food here: think truffle mayonnaise sauce, aged cheddar, ground beef patties and brioche buns that have never seen the inside of a freezer. Each burger is made separately at every outlet, and its ingredients cooked just the way you’d do it at home. What we’re offering is far from a chi-chi gourmet experience, though. Have your specialty or build -ityourself burgers with both feet on the ground and enjoy the greasy and sinful goodness of comfort food at an affordable price, just the way a real burger maniac should. We have always has been, really no-nonsense that way. And if our logo’s mascot could talk, he would say the same.
