SEEDS AND THREADS

Fashion Show Fundraising Event: 10th March 2017

Background: The Embassy of Italy and AVSI Foundation have a long standing history of cooperation in Uganda especially in the health sector, capacity building and vocational training. “Seeds and Threads” is a fashion show program born out of the desire to support African designers from Uganda, Nigeria, Congo, Madagascar and India. The event launched and fundraised for a workshop on the production of quality shirts at COWA Centenary Vocational Training School in Nsambya, a local professional institute that collaborates with AVSI through the Distance Support Program. Theme: Seeds and Threads, the African tradition in contemporary fashion.

Purpose: To give visibility to young African designers and to raise funds to train COWA Centenary Vocational Training School students in skills to produce high quality shirts for a competitive market. The training will also be supported by a professional Italian designer from La Bottega dell’ Artigianato, a prominent Roman fashion firm.

The vocational training sector has shown incredible results as a means of support to youth livelihoods: such initiatives are known to succeed when we put the dignity of the person at the center of our engagements - H.E. Domenico

Embassy of Italy and AVSI Foundation organized a fundraising event which took place on March 10th 2017 at the residence of the Ambassador of Italy. “Seeds and Threads” hosted more than 10 African designers from Nigeria, Madagascar, Congo, India, Uganda, among others. The experience of collaboration has once again proved that AVSI Foundation and the Embassy of Italy continue to mantain a strong relationship, which has characterized our work over the years with a shared desire to support the less advantaged persons and communities through a cultural exchange of involvements. The event was a great success and AVSI Foundation and the Embassy of Italy thank all supporters of this well achieved goal during a purposeful evening together. AVSI Foundation also expresses thoughts of gratitude to Lale Hair Dressing, Jamila Make Up, Villa Kololo, Caffe` Latte and Emanuela Mantegazza Photography for their support. Specific achievements/conclusion: • Promoted local designers. • Raised UGX 8.5 million from sale of entry tickets. • Created new linkages with individuals, the private sector, the 3rd sector and government.
