Angela on the loose! Written by Angela Rhodenizer

Makin’ Tracks!

Well winter didn’t seem to want to loosen its grip this year eh? I will always fondly remember this spring as the one when I planted flowers in my garden for the first time ever one week, and then I’m writing about my days Snow Shoeing adventure the next. Granted, this has been something I’ve been meaning to try all winter and just when I thought I wouldn’t get the chance after all, opportunity knocks, or in this case falls from the sky. With my husband accompanying me we were quickly able to apprehend 2 sets of what I thought were very modern, sleek looking snow-shoes from my mother-in-law, in fact one may accurately describe them as looking like a sort of shortened, claw footed ski. Excellent. ‘Round about the time we were getting ready to gear up our good friend Danielle decides she wants in on the action and with her she has exactly the style of snow shoe I’m sure the pioneers themselves would have worn and I am impressed. Once we had our boots strapped in we set off towards the wooded trails behind our home, and let me just say here that within only a few awkward, teetering steps all my pre-conceived notions and fantasies of gliding effortlessly on the snow and through the trails were utterly shot down. Snow Shoeing is not for the faint of heart. By the time I made it the hundred paces or so through my back yard to the tree line I was starting to get it. I was also starting to tire. My companions up ahead forged through the saplings and under brush with apparent ease, or so I thought until the day claims it’s first victim and one goes face first into the snow in about the same fashion as getting ones cross country ski’s accidentally crossed. This motivates me to try harder and it goes well until the trees starting getting dense and I get caught on a fallen branch and go sprawling into the white abyss myself.. Meanwhile our resident pioneer is having no difficulties, even while her excited pup weaved in and around her feet. In some instances, perhaps technology may not improve on an old design. Realistically we had a ball. We went over the hills and through the woods like old pros. I kid you not that it was a feat of great coordination to get myself around with them things strapped to my feet, but what honest fun and exercise it was! If it wasn’t for the fact that it’s supposed to be spring and I, like so many others I’m sure, am looking intently forward to warmer weather, I would almost say I can’t wait to try it again, but in this case, I am more than ready to say adios to anything even remotely related to snow. And with that in mind I am ready to start my garden. Again. Until next time..

Taiji Janos Neder, RMT, DOMTP Registered Massage Therapist In this issue I would like to introduce you to the ancient Chinese concept of ‘Taiji’ . The pictorial image of the principles of Taiji is the familiar Chinese Yin /Yang symbol, representing the harmonious interplay of complimentary opposites creating a unified whole. In other words a state of Spiritual and Physical harmony. Taiji has both philosophical and practical components and it’s principles form the cornerstone of both Chinese martial arts and Chinese traditional medicine. So what do Yin and Yang represent ? They are two distinct manifestations of energy, each having a specific polarity (similar to a magnet).Yin (-) is the negative pole, and represents the receptive or listening phase, spaces, intervals and emptiness. Yang (+) the positive pole, represents the action or application phase, solidity, propulsion and the tangible. Each aspect needs the other to exist, each supporting and giving rise to it’s polar opposite. For something to exist in our reality and be noticed by our senses it must have a contrast.Take for example a tea cup, the cup itself would be considered Yang, the space inside the cup Yin. It needs both these aspects to be a functional item. In matters of health the body has it’s own version of Taiji. These are it’s self healing and self regulating mecha-

and regular body maintenance with massage, acupuncture and osteopathy. The way of Taiji, ancient principles that can be applied to balance out the wear and tear of the modern world.

Taiji as a life path would include both internal and external approaches. Such as proper self care, developing good stress management skills, appropriate exercise

There is a Better Way

To my fellow Canucks It seems to me, and a lot of other people, probably you as well, that things in this world of ours are getting worse, or at best not improving.

which is a new way, a better way, to facilitate trade and enable wonder filled lives for all of us while eliminating taxes and poverty, plus provide free education and health care—and a lot more good stuff!

The mainstream media (MSM) bombards us daily with reports from throughout the world of protests, corruption, robberies, woundings, killings and wars, along with disasters from accidents, fires, floods, storms, explosions and earthquakes. And then, of course, there are the constant reminders of the unsettled economy.

Facilitism (derived from the transitive verb facilitate) can be quickly implemented once enough of us want it and convince enough politicians to bring it in. Canada, and most other countries already have all the necessary technology needed for Facilitism to function fully. Discover more at www.facilitism.com

In addition, we face constant increases in the pollution of our air (including space), water and land. And billions of people are struggling to exist in inhuman conditions and ill health with little food and insufficient clean water.

Love be with you Ronald Lyle McPherson

The Annapolis Valley Honour Choir is going places! The Annapolis Valley Honour Choir has big news and they want SCOOP readers to be some of the first to know!

The Annapolis Valley Honour Choir has been a leader in music education in the Annapolis Valley and the Maritimes for almost 25 years. This instructional program emphasizes musical and vocal training through choral music. This amazing group of talented and dedicated young people, under the direction of Heather Fraser, have great fun, strive for musical excellence and develop a life-long love of singing. Europe Trip This Summer! Every 5 years since the choir’s establishment, the choir has taken their singers on a tour overseas to perform in world-class venues, visit historical sights, and contribute to their musical education. This July 2013, the AVHC will be departing on the next of their international tours, this time traveling to Budapest, Vienna and Venice. On this trip, these young singers will perform concerts in all cities (as well as informal “spontaneous singing” along the way!) and in Vienna will take part in the International Summa Cum Laude Music Festival. This is a festival that welcomes hundreds of singers from all over the world – an Olympics of singing, if you will. This incredible opportunity will allow these young musicians to meet and mix with singers of their own age from different countries, be inspired by top quality performances, participate in workshops with world renowned conductors, and perform in some of the most famous venues in Vienna, including the Musikverein, one of the most famous concert venues in the world. Choral Celebration Fundraising Concert – April 20th The AVHC wishes to thank everyone who has supported their trip fundraising efforts so far but we’re not there yet! The AVHC is very fortunate to have the tremendous support of other choral community members; so much so that they are joining forces to help send us on our way. Join us on Saturday, April 20th, 7:30pm at University Hall, Acadia for a gala concert celebrating choral singing in the valley. Special guests include the North Mountain Community Chorus, the Dukes of Kent and the Kings Chorale! Don’t miss it! The AVHC is Expanding! Welcome younger singers! What better occasion than a 25th Anniversary to expand our AVHC family! Starting in September, a treble choir for children in Grades 5 to 8 will begin! The focus of this ensemble is to have fun, build friendships, and introduce singers to all that choral music can be! This new choir will rehearse for 2 hours, once a week, at Acadia University, and will incorporate theory and ear training sessions as well as musicianship and vocal skills within rehearsals and performance

settings. As the King Chorale Children’s Chorus is an excellent and active choral program for this age group in the Western end in the valley, and one we support and partner with, this new AVHC choir will span from the Eastern end of the Valley to the Coldbrook – Cambridge area. In addition, in the fall of 2014, this new choir will be partnering with Acadia University Music Education program. Join The Choir! Auditions for both choirs will happen later in the spring. Find out all about the choir, the trip, upcoming concerts and events on our website, www.avhc.ca and on our Facebook page! Information and materials will also be sent out to all school music teachers. Please support youth making music in the valley! We hope to see you on April 20th! SCOOPS APRIL 2013

What’s the Warranty?

Diamonds are Forever...

Dave Reid D.M. Reid Jewellers Ltd

In today’s marketplace, most goods sold come with some sort of warranty.

Rarely is complete loss or theft of the ring covered…that’s insurance.

Fine diamond rings and jewellery are no different. The warranties and claims for jewellery can be confusing.

Guarantees of ‘appraising elsewhere at double what you paid’, ‘unconditional’ and other far-fetched claims should be scrutinized carefully before purchase. If purchased out of area, fulfilling and enforcing grand promises can be difficult if not impossible.

So, just what are the conditions the owner must meet in order to obtain coverage under warranty? Good warranties usually require the owner to have their valuable purchase inspected twice a year. It should generally be cleaned and serviced at that time as well. What are the most important things a good jewellery warranty covers? A time specific warranty covering defects in material and workmanship. And it will guarantee the stated quality of the piece. This means that if a stone is lost or if the setting or mount breaks or cracks due to defect in material or workmanship, then the item is repaired or replaced at no charge to the owner. The store is solidly standing behind what they sell.

The jeweller should help the owner clearly understand the proper use and care of their fine jewellery. Wear and tear from overuse or improper wear reduces the life and enjoyment of jewellery. And most of all, a good warranty comes with your purchase at no extra charge. Fine jewellers, like D M Reids, stand behind the jewellery they sell with clear and specific warranties. Your satisfaction and realistic expectations can provide a lifetime of enjoyment with your valued jewels.

SOD also referred to as “the enzyme of life” is a Primary Antioxidant found in every living species, acting as the first line of defense against harmful toxins and cellular breakdown caused by free radicals. THE ULTIMATE IN SLEEPING COMFORT Simmons Canada has been helping people sleep better for over 120 years. By continuously improving the quality of our mattresses, we continuously improve our customers’ lives. Finding the mattress that is right for you can be a confusing experience. In order to make it easier for you, we have positioned our quality mattresses into Simmons Brands. Each Brand is defined by the coil construction with which it is crafted, using different types of coils, foam and fibres, some including Latex, Viscolastic Memory Foam, Wool, Silk and Cashmere fibres. Each combination of materials produces a different “comfort profile” or “feel”, which makes one mattress distinct from the next. Simmons Deepsleep® DeepSleep mattresses are constructed using SimFlex® Continuous Interactive Coil Technology to respond efficiently to your body. SimFlex interactive open coils firm up when compressed and are fastened together at the top and bottom to form a resilient, interactive support system. Interactive support means that the coils work together to gently contour to your overall body shape and weight, creating the environment for a deep and restful night’s sleep. Continuous Interactive Coil Technology provides your mattress with firm support and classic comfort. Simmons Beautyrest® The Patented Evolution NON-FLIP® Pocketed Coils inside every Beautyrest® mattress are what separate a good night’s sleep from a great night’s sleep. Unlike ordinary mattresses, Patented Evolution NON-FLIP Pocketed Coils are tied together at the side of each fabric pocket. So when you move or roll, the independentlyresponding Pocketed Coils minimize the motion transfer to your partner. Combine this superior conformability with the cushioning properties of visco memory foam or latex foams available in some models and you have a mattress that provides the ideal combination of comfort and support. After an undisturbed night’s sleep on a Simmons Beautyrest mattress, you’ll feel refreshed and ready for the day! Drop by Jordan’s to learn how you can sleep and feel better on a Simmons mattress!

Winemaking Tips: Monitor and Test by: David M. Cvet Owner/operator Wine Kitz New Minas

There are three important aspects to monitoring and testing your winemaking efforts: a) follow the directions; b) perform tests using instruments available from Wine Kitz, such as a ‘wine thief’, a hydrometer and hydrometer cylinder; c) your very own taste buds! The most often misunderstood and frequently asked question has to do with understanding and measuring specific gravity (S.G.). Specific gravity measures the density or weight of wine in relation to water. Water has a specific gravity of approximately 1.002 at 20C. S.G. is measured using a hydrometer and measures potential alcohol content of your finished wine. It is also a useful measure to determine when to rack and stabilize the wine when the recommended specific gravity has been reached. A finished wine should have a S.G. of 0.995 or lower. S.G. Readings for each batch may vary, depending upon the wine you are making. The recommended S.G. targets are listed in the instructions that accompany each kit. To measure specific gravity, using a wine thief, extract a sample by lowering the thief into the container. The pressure of the wine forces a small

valve in the bottom of the thief to open, allowing the wine to fill the tube. Remove the tube with the sample inside for testing. This is the most sterile way to obtain a wine sample. Release the sample into your hydrometer cylinder and insert the hydrometer (which floats). Read the point where the meniscus cuts across the scale printed on the inside of the hy-

Consignment is recycling at its finest! Jane MacDonald

Here in Nova Scotia, it seems we have always been dedicated to our environment, aware of our footprint and ahead of our time. Recycling has become a natural thing to do! So it is not surprising that for us, “reusing” is a way of life. Since the 1970’s, Frenchy’s has, slowly but surely, removed the stigma from secondhand or used clothing. Resale shopping has taken on a life of its own...so much so that it has even become a social past-time, a shared experience among friends. And now the doors have been flung wide open for another wonderful trend... consignment boutiques! These shops have become a place for gals to share their unwanted “nearly new” clothing and accessories with other gals who can use them! A place where a soccer mom can purchase a great dress for a special occasion and a hip pair of skinny jeans for her teenager. A place a girl can get a reasonably priced handbag or piece of jewellery for a girlfriend’s birthday next week. All without breaking the bank! It’s also a place women can earn a few dollars for sharing their items with others. As well, a place that will motivate you to clean out your closet more often! Whether you shop consignment or are a consigning partner, or both, it’s a wonderful way to reduce, reuse, and recycle! And I encourage you to rejoice in affordable women’s clothing and accessories and visit a local consignment boutique today! You never know what you might find! And chances are good that you’ll see your friends while you’re there! See our ad on page 15

A History of Honouring Mothers Karen Pyra, Silver Horse Florist

The tradition of honouring mothers on a special day is very old. The roots of Mother’s Day lie in ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman times. Special celebrations were held in honour of Mother goddesses such as Isis, Cybele and Rhea. By the 17th century in England, a clerical decree created Mothering Day, held on the 4th day of the Christian observance of Lent. It was an important celebration. Families travelled to be together, mothers were presented with flowers and cakes, and a family feast was held. In North America, the observance of Mother’s Day began with a proclamation by Julia Ward Howe in 1870. Also known for writing the famous “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” Julia Ward Howe called for mothers to unite to protest the loss of their sons’ lives in the Civil War. It was then called International Mother’s Day; the purpose was to celebrate peace and motherhood. The idea was promoted again at the turn of the century by Anna Reeves Jarvis, who with members of her women’s group began to celebrate an adaptation of the idea. They began a Mother’s Friendship Day to re-unite families and friends that had been divided between the two sides of the Civil War. When Ms. Jarvis died, her daughter asked her church to create an official Mother’s Day in remembrance of her mother. On May 10, 1908, the first official Mother’s Day took place at Andrew’s Methodist Church in West Virginia. Carnations were given to all mothers in attendance, and this is where the tradition of giving carnations on Mother’s Day comes from. Today carnations are still a popular flower to give to mothers on Mother’s Day, and many people still wear a carnation on Mother’s Day to honour their mother. Don’t forget to celebrate your mother on Sunday May 12!

Thank you Mom! Mother’s Day is Sunday May 12. Professionally designed bouquets, gift baskets, flowering plants and gifts for the home and garden.

Don’t Miss Out!

It’s the first thing they teach in culinary school: keep your station clutter-free, use what you need and take out only what you need to get the job done. It’s all about efficiency and food safety. A few ways you can help get organized are to: • Read the whole recipe before you start. Mistakes happen when you rush over a recipe too fast. Take time to outline what you will be doing first before you actually pick up your knife. • Gather all of your ingredients. It’s easier to get everything out in advance. Reduce the trips to the fridge and pantry; grab everything you will need including bowls, measuring spoons, equipment, a clean side towel and a wet cloth to clean up any mess. • Measure it all out. Take a little extra time, a few extra dishes and do any chopping in advance; measure your spices ahead of time and place them in small dishes or combine them all if you can into a spice blend. This allows you to add each individual ingredient as you need it for the recipe and prevents you from leaving the food for any amount of time, thus reducing the chances of burning or over-cooking. • Clean as you go. Have a sink of hot soapy water ready. Have an extra moment while something is cooking? Do a few dishes, reducing clean-up time at the end. Clean up any spills or messes on your counter as you make them. Clutter and mess may make you feel overwhelmed unnecessarily. These four simple guidelines help with everyday cooking. From cookies to full meals, it’s a skill that can be applied to more than cooking. Bon appetite! Until next time, Undercover Chef

Are You Ready? Where you choose to live in retirement is a very important decision. There are many things to consider. Finding answers and solutions to best fit the kind of lifestyle you want, and need, can feel overwhelming. I have included in this article some questions which can be answered simply with a “yes” or “no”. These questions may help you to determine if it’s time to look at the next step in your healthy and safe retirement lifestyle. • Am I looking for a more active social life? • Would I like to feel more secure in my surroundings? • Do I enjoy, or wish I had more, exercise and recreation in my day? • Is home maintenance becoming too much for me to manage? • Does having a personal housekeeper sound appealing? • Would I enjoy having a meal prepared and served to me every day? • Would I like to share my dining experiences with friends more often? • Will having on site staff available 24 hours a day give me better peace of mind? • Is my health declining? • Do I need help caring for the one I love? • Has it become difficult to keep track of my medications? • Would I be more comfortable if I had some supportive services available? • Am I relying on friends and family to do things for me? If you find that you answer “yes” to four or more of these questions, do yourself a favour; come to Kings Riverside Court and take a look at what we have to offer. Most first-time visitors still don’t feel they are ready for a retirement community. However, once they make the decision to move to a retirement community, those same residents often say “I wish I did this sooner!” Consider your present quality of life... maybe now really is the right time for you.

What in the world is a home care worker co-op?

And what’s in it for you? For more than 20 years, Careforce has provided professional, compassionate home care to people of all ages and circumstances. We’re well known for that. One thing most people don’t know about Careforce, though, is that we operate as a worker cooperative. Hold up – a what? Yes, exactly – a worker cooperative. A worker cooperative is a form of business ownership where the business is owned and democratically managed by its worker-owners. In our case, that means that many of the caregivers you welcome into your home are also owners of Careforce. This is different from most small businesses, which are owned and controlled by just a couple of people. Interesting. But how does that help you? Why would you care? There are two main reasons. First (and most importantly), since our caregivers own the business, they are also more heavily invested in its success. That means they work harder to dazzle our customers and make Careforce a fun, ‘can-do’ place to work. Second, when you choose Careforce as your home care provider, you can feel good knowing that your money is being divided fairly among the people who have worked hardest to earn it. Our profits are shared among owners based on how much labour they contribute throughout the year. For more information about worker cooperatives, check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worker_cooperative or Google the Canadian Worker Cooperative Federation. Have a great month!

Explore the Valley on Foot!

Now that we have packed away our winter boots, it is time to get out our sneakers and enjoy the fresh spring air! Why not explore what our wonderful Annapolis Valley landscape can offer while you maintain your physical fitness? Walking and hiking are terrific ways to sight-see on your own or as a family, and the Valley has no shortage of developed trails and parks to discover! Walking is one of the easiest activities to incorporate into your daily routines. You can vary the duration and intensity of your walking/ hiking according to the trails or areas you choose. The miles of dykeland through the Valley corridor provide level terrain for walking, while Cape Split offers a more rigorous challenge with steeper inclines and varied terrain. WALKING & HIKING TIPS: • Stretch your muscles – Stretching exercises before your head out on a walk, during (for longer routes) and after are important to minimize the risk of injury, decrease muscle tension and to maintain your flexibility. Walking and hiking require focus on larger, lower extremity muscle groups, including the calves, hamstrings and quadriceps. • Every step counts! – Aim for 60 minutes of physical activity every day to maintain your mobility and cardiovascular endurance. The duration of your physical activity is cumulative, so add it up each day! Remember to pace yourself. • Wear supportive footwear – Ensure that your sneakers or hiking boots fit well, provide adequate support and shock absorption. Footwear also provides stability to the many bones and joints of the feet, as well as to the ankles; this is especially important when navigating uneven terrain. Replace footwear that has seen too many miles! • Maintain adequate hydration –Drink plenty of water before, during and after walks/hikes. The physiotherapists at KINGS Physiotherapy Clinic can provide you with education and resources to keep you moving so you can enjoy this spring season! Our pedorthist can also evaluate your needs with respect to custom foot orthotics and footwear. Contact us today!

MLD may be indicated to treat the effects of cancer treatment / intervention. Did you know that manual lymph drainage can increase the function of the immune system by bringing the bacteria to the lymph nodes? The bacteria can then be destroyed by body’s lymphocytes. Yes, you will tan with or without a lotion but you’ll need to tan longer and your tan will fade quicker if you don’t use lotion. We can help you pick out a good quality lotion for your skin type and level of tan in your price range. It is true the better the quality of the product the more it will cost because you’re paying for the higher quality ingredients but even the more

modestly priced lotions will give better results than using nothing. Just as important as the right lotion is following up with a really good moisturizer! The ones we sell help to maintain and extend your tan, so you’re going to save more money on tanning in the long run because you don’t need to tan as often if you’re getting better results with using the right products. We also sell SPF lotions for using outdoors, you should check these out before leaving for your trip south. Here’s where we left off in the last episode..

I have a lot happening right now with trying to sell the house and now this. Thinking out loud I say, “oh yea, I need to stop at Mortgage Intelligence in Kentville. I know they can give me some great advice on whether to keep trying to sell my house or invest a few more years before moving”. “I don’t mind”, Debbie says, “as long as we can pop in to the MBC School of Esthetics in New Minas. I’m thinking of a new start for myself”. I’d like to think of a new start too, me and Debbie spending the rest of our lives together. But right now all I can think of the reading of the Will. Just when I was deep in thought, Debbie screamed, “Look out”! Avoiding the car in front of me that had suddenly braked, I veered over the curb and narrowly missed a telephone pole bringing the car to an abrupt stop. Debbie was slumped

beside me and there was blood on the inside of the passenger window. “Debbie, Jeez wake up, for God’s sake”. The little bit of first aid training that I had kicked in and I checked her pulse. She was still breathing. I grabbed my cell and called 911. The ambulance arrived in minutes but Debbie was still out cold. The paramedics wheeled her off and it looked like they might have revived her but I couldn’t be sure. They did not let me ride with them so I jumped in my car and rushed in the direction of the hospital. On the way there many things went through my head. What a whirlwind this past few days had been. I had found Debbie again and we were hitting it off and she was genuinely fond of me and always had been. Then there was my mother with her hurt arm and my uncle’s death and now Debbie is on the way to the hospital and it was my fault. This traffic is slow as molasses today. I am just passing the turn off to McGill’s Café.

Finally I get to the hospital and rush into the emergency department and the nurse asks me “Are you family?” “No, I’m…..I’m…”(what am I really?)” I’m her boyfriend” I said with surprising confidence delighting in the sound of those words, but then I added, sheepishly, “and I was the guy driving the car”. The nurse informed me that I would have to wait. They needed to do further tests to see if she had a concussion or possible brain injury. The nurse saw the fear in my face. “She’s conscious then? “ I asked. “Yes she is conscious” she answered “ but needs to be observed. Her head must have hit the window hard so we have to make sure. Don’t worry, she will get the best of care.” I remembered my friend Bill who had a concussion after an accident and he went to Julie Skaling Physiotherapy Clinic and had physiotherapy and massage therapy treatments. He’s fine now but will Debbie be fine?. Just then my cell phone rang and it was my mother. “Oh hello dear, I was wondering if you could go to the Silver Horse Florist and order some flowers to be sent to Aunt Elizabeth and then go to R.D. Chisholm’s and pick out a nice sympathy card and….” “Mom, Mom yes I will do those things for you but I can’t right now. I will talk to you later and explain everything”. No need to worry her now I started to think about things I could buy for Debbie to cheer her up. Perhaps I could drop into Essential Lingerie” and pick her up something we would both enjoy. There I go again thinking of myself and Debbie and lingerie when she is lying in a hospital room with a possible brain injury. Finally the nurse brought me in to see her. Debbie looked up with a puzzled look on her face and said “Who are you?” The nurse’s eyes widened and she answered “This is your boyfriend, dear.” Looking totally confused Debbie answered “He is?”

Hearing loss can actually worsen over time, so that someone who has older hearing aids can now be using a device that’s less clear. Sometimes individuals are comfortable with their hearing aids and resist upgrading to a new set. People who treat a decline in their hearing by upgrading their aids have been shown to be happier and more active than those who don’t. You might see and hear a lot of advertisements about hearing aids and new technology that’s come out. You might wonder why the new technology is supposed to be so much better, or why you should spend your hard earned money on new hearing aids when your old ones are only five years old and still work just fine. There are a number of reasons why you might want to try out the latest technology. The most common comment I get from clients who try new hearing aids after wearing old ones is how many more sounds they hear with the new ones, and how much more natural those sounds are. About fifteen years ago digital hearing aids were the newest thing to arrive on the market; these days, it’s very unusual to find anything but digital hearing aids! The open fit and receiver in the ear style of hearing aid were just coming out soon after that and now they account for a large portion of my sales. Many people like the more natural fit and sound of this type of hearing aid, and it doesn’t hurt that they are almost invisible. If you’d like to experience the latest technology for yourself, book an appointment for a FREE demonstration! If you don’t wear hearing aids yet, this can be a great time to find out exactly what you’re missing.

What a difference new technology makes!

Osteoporosis Osteoporosis is a bone disease where parts of the bone become weak and prone to fracture. This condition is more common in seniors, but can affect men and women of all ages. Osteoporosis is responsible for a large number of bone fractures that occur in seniors, as the weakened bones can no longer support their body weight. At least 2 million Canadians have osteoporosis. While men also develop osteoporosis, this condition is particularly common among women who have reached menopause. The increased risk at menopause reflects the fact that the hormone estrogen, a key factor in maintaining bone strength in women, is no longer produced by the ovaries after menopause. Because women have 30% less bone mass than men, women are particularly prone to osteoporosis as they age. However, by the age of 65 to 70 years, men and women lose bone at about the same rate. Eating enough foods rich in calcium and vitamin D and participating in weight-bearing exercises are important steps in preventing osteoporosis.

Regret Carrie Yeo, Owner/Technician Light Touch Laser

Sarah She looked in the mirror after her laser hair removal treatment and, for the first time in ages, was happy with what she saw. This was ironic because her skin at that moment looked a little red and there were little flecks of peppered hairs scattered across her chin and at the corners of her upper lip. It didn’t matter- it would look fine in a few minutes; and finally after all these years of being tormented by those horrible hairs, she was doing something about it. She had been thinking about getting laser for a long time. And now that she gotten her first treatment she couldn’t help but wonder why she had waited. To have struggled all that time, hating and worrying about the hair, was such a waste, but now things would be different. She was finally doing something just for her. Aimee She stood in front of her closet and reached for another outfit like she had done many times over the last few years. Except this time was different. Instead of cringing and struggling to squeeze into the outfit, she held her breath in anticipation as the garment

slipped over her head and the hem slid past her hips. She looked at her reflection. It was too big. She turned and looked over her shoulder and there was no denying it. The dress that had been her go-to outfit for the last year no longer fit. In fact it hung off her. She was giddy with joy and pride. 30 lbs in 10 weeks had been her goal, and she had done with Ideal Protein. The scale had told her she’d succeeded, but until she had started going through her closet, it hadn’t really sunk in. She was a forty year old woman who was at her goal weight. Amazing. She wished she had never let her weight get out of control and she tried not to think about the wasted time spent being self-conscious and unhappy. That was all going to change. Right after a trip to the mall... There is no time for regret. This is your life. Make it beautiful. Why wouldn’t you?

Eyes Wide Open Not only do eyelash extensions make you look younger and more refreshed, eyelash extensions are also a great way to make your eyes appear wider, larger and more open. Who doesn’t want to have doe eyes to attract attention and enhance communication with, well, everyone! I relied heavily on my eyelash extensions to give me my wider more open eyed look as I have high cheek bones and being a bit overweight found when I would smile my eyes would almost disappear and I would have said they were even a little “squinty”! Well not anymore! If it hadn’t happened to me I wouldn’t have believed it! I just discovered another way to make my own eyes appear even wider - Weight loss! I have been on a different journey the past few months when I was introduced to Ideal Protein. Ideal Protein is a weight loss protocol that Light Touch Laser has been offering since last year and I have had an amazing transformation on it. I have lost 45 pounds in 15 weeks and I have to say it has changed the way I see, and am seen. After the first 25 pounds even my mother kept saying my eyes were so BIG. She kept looking at me for long periods of time and if I wasn’t on such a ‘skinny high’ I might have been a little paranoid. Believe me no one

Massage Therapy Forward Thinking Dana Harrison, MT - Reg. NS Physiotherapy Clinic

Massage therapy is becoming a method of alternative health care that has gained more popularity over the recent years. Employers are realizing the value of this service and encouraging employees to take advantage of massage services for correcting muscle imbalances and prevention of injury. Massage therapy is no longer seen as exclusively a luxury during spa visits, but a service offered to improve function of normal body mechanics. Do you often get sore after Shoveling snow? Therapeutic massage helps to decreased delayed onset muscle soreness. It allows lactic acid the opportunity to exit the muscle sooner, and to decrease the days of soreness that can follow. Have you been diagnosed with Tendonitis? Tendonitis often happens when a muscle is repetitively overused. Therapeutic massage can help to stretch the muscle and to re-introduce blood flow to promote healthy tissue healing. Is most of your day spent in front of a Computer? With the use of computers being so prevalent today, this can be a large contributor to muscle irritation. Computer posture: repetitive reaching for a “mouse”, forward head tilt when looking at a screen, and sitting in a slumped posture. A Massage Therapist may be able to suggest a better set-up for your situation. They can also help to correct any muscle imbalances, due to compensation from posture. If you are not using Massage Therapy, maybe this is the time! If you have questions about how massage therapy can help you, please contact a Registered Massage Therapist.

The majority of custom made foot orthotics are manufactured and dispensed by Certified Pedorthists. These individuals are nationally certified professionals in Canada. The training to achieve certification includes theory and practical experience in anatomy, biomechanics, pathology and other specialized areas of concern for the lower extremities. A total of 6000 hours experience working in the profession is required before being eligible to write the certification exams. Before booking an appointment it is important to see a physician for a referral for orthotics, as the physician is responsible for diagnosing the problem. The Certified Pedorthist can then assess the patient and design an orthotic device to treat the diagnosed condition. The assessment includes determining the patients past medical history including disease conditions such as diabetes and arthritis; present complaints of pain or lack of function; leisure and work activities and mechanism of injury if applicable. The Pedorthist then performs a physical examination of the lower extremities, with special focus on the feet, in non-weight bearing and weight bearing (sitting and

Julie Sweet - Owner Julie Sweet is passionate about horses and people, and is fortunate to have a career where she can help develop relationships between horses and riders. After graduating from Lakeland College in 1995 with a diploma in western horsemanship, Julie decided to continue her equine education and became a Certified Horsemanship Association Instructor. Julie recognized a need within the horse industry for a riding program where students could learn to ride in a friendly, inviting environment on horses that were safe and trustworthy. So in 1999 Julie opened Sweet’s Horse Center. Julie is committed to helping her students develop a solid horsemanship foundation, knowing that is the key to any horse and rider partnership. Many of Julie’s students have enjoyed developing a lifelong love of riding horses thanks to her positive, fun teaching style. Recently Julie added to her list of accomplishments by becoming a C.H.A Master Instructor. Also receiving a recommendation to become a clinic instructor for the C.H.A. Julie is excited about having an opportunity to educate other riding instructors internationally.

Amy was certified as Certified Horsemanship Association instructor in 2003. She has been a riding instructor at Sweet’s Horse Center for 10 years having the pleasure of watching her students become some of the most accomplished riders in our area. Amy is also a talented horse trainer and specializes in starting young horses under saddle. She believes that a solid foundation is the cornerstone to a good training program regardless of which discipline horse and rider are destined for. Having an innate ability to understand a horses mind and body lead Amy to become a Certified Equine Massage Therapist. With her coaching, you and your horse will quickly understand, appreciate, and enjoy one another.

Jane Morse ~ Instructor IT’S NEVER TOO LATE! Your childhood experience with a horse may have been something like Jane’s climbing on carelessly, thinking how hard can this really be and it ending badly. That was Jane’s experience, and a lingering fear kept her from getting back on. But it’s never too late! At 49 Jane got back in the saddle, and began taking several riding lessons each week. That fear was quickly replaced with an absorbing love for horses. Anything this enjoyable deserves to be shared, so last year Jane obtained her C.H.A. level 1 instructor certification. If you’ve ever considered riding a horse but were a bit timid to try, Jane would love to help you. Lose that apprehension, understand, respect, and ride horses with confidence. And the satisfaction that comes with this? Well, that’s beyond words!

Straight from the horse’s mouth… Hey dudes, what’s shakin? The barn help around these parts call me the ‘fence tester’. If the electric fence isn’t working I will be the first to know because I pretty much lean on it daily. If I don’t feel a jolt I’m as good as gone, taste testing everything as I go on a self guided tour around the farm. I think I’m pretty popular because I always hear the kids saying “Can I please ride Blue this week” yeah that’s what they all say. And me, I’ m always ready to go! Hooves up dude, Blue I’ve taught a lot of people how to ride, slow and steady is my style. Everyone treats me with respect, I’m the ‘Boss’ all the horses know it and I don’t even have to show it! Some new riders start out a little nervous but a couple rides on me and their jitters melt away, it’s all because of my sweet, gentle way. You can trust me, I’ll take care you…..and I am a peppermint kinda girl ;) Sending nuzzles your way, Colita

In my younger days when I had my own ideas about what I should and shouldn’t do my riders would say “just do it Jill” and now can you believe that’s what they call me at horse shows? Apparently I’m an official symbol of Canada because I’m a Canadian horse! Maybe that why I can ‘do’ it all, Canadians are cool like that. If you want to learn to jump I’m the horse you should ride, I’ve got style. I’m not a peppermint kinda girl…... Jump around, Jill Julie calls me Kriss Kross it’s her favorite nick name for me, I like it <3 too. I love running a good barrel or pole bending pattern, heck I love any pattern make it fast or make it slow. I don’t think there is anything better than an afternoon out on the trail. I can be spunky and I’m pretty sure that’s why everyone likes to ride me. I love to scratch my head and people make the best scratching post ever! Happy trails, Krissy SCOOPS APRIL 2013

Cottage Country rooted in tradition, driven by a passion for quality homes By Heather Laura Clarke

For more than four decades, Cottage Country has been developing communities and properties across Nova Scotia -- building cottages and country homes using traditional building principles and high-quality Nova Scotia wood. Owner Bruce McDow says it’s always been a family affair, dating back to the early 1800s when his family set up a sawmill and began building in the New Ross area. In early 1970s, McDow acquired a parcel of land in New Ross, and began his career selling lakefront properties and building homes. Although times had changed, he stuck with his family’s traditional building principles. “Our family has been building wood buildings for almost 200 years, and there’s not really a lot of difference in the way we do things now,” says McDow. “We’re using the techniques they had brought from Europe, which were a combination of conventional and post-andbeam construction.” “These are good, solid, proven principles brought to Nova Scotia in the 17th and 18th centuries.” With more than 5,000 properties and 1,600 homes and cottages under their belt, Cottage Country continues to build the old-fashioned way -- hand-nailing hot-dipped galvanized nails into solid local wood to create snug, energy-efficient homes. These wooden structures are less heat-conductive than steel and concrete, which means they use far less energy to stay warm during the winter and comfortably cool during the summer. “When we build our buildings, we put a two-inch airspace through the entire roof system, and a one-inch airspace around the entire exterior -- between the siding and the interior cavity of the building,” explains McDow. “This airspace provides a break between the exterior and the interior, blocking the thermal bridge and preventing frost from building up inside the walls.” “Even if it’s freezing outside, the cold will not be able to penetrate the building to the inside cavity.” Not only are these wood homes energy-efficient, but McDow says building with wood is much better for the environment than using modern building materials. In order to manufacture vinyl siding or concrete, you need to extract materials from the earth -- and they are never replaced. Harvesting wood is much less intrusive. By following sustainable forestry practices, wood can always be regenerated -- providing building materials far into the future. The Canadian Wood Council describes wood as “the only major building material that uses the sun’s energy to renew itself in a continuous, sustainable cycle.” “Wood is a sustainable product grown right here in Nova Scotia,” says McDow. “People should consider using wood first, before any other material.” As McDow learns more about his family’s homebuilding history, he says he’s proud to stay true to their age-old methods for building solid, comfortable homes. “I’ve been part of building homes since I was very young, and there are so many things I learned when I started digging into my family’s traditional way of building,” says McDow. “I’m always learning something new -- but the ironic thing is that it’s not new information. It’s all borrowed from the past.” SCOOPS APRIL 2013

Some Differences Between Driving Schools Choosing a driving program can be a difficult task. It is important to gather information before you decide. Some driving schools would have you think that all programs are created equal. If you are only considering receiving a certificate at the end, that would be true. However, you should find out if the course teaches defensive driving tactics. Young Drivers of Canada has been the leading defensive driving program in Canada for over 40 years. Habits have been developed and are regularly updated to teach new drivers, and reinforce the skills of experienced drivers to recognize and prevent collisions. W Many sources confirm that social activities can be a great benefit for folks of all ages, particularly seniors. Studies show that when seniors engage in social activities, it contributes to both quality and longevity of life. Social activities provide mental stimulation, helping us, at any age, to stay sharp. Relationship building is important for all human life. It instils a sense of accomplishment. This is important. No matter what age, we can always try and learn new things.

The sense of feeling connected to society helps keep us from withdrawing. It has been proven to help slow memory loss and even help maintain muscle strength.

Recently I met with Megan MacNeil, the Program Co-ordinator at Wickwire Place Assisted living Residence.. Wickwire’s social calendar outlines, in great detail, the many activities that are available in their community. A multiple of activities is provided daily. Varying by day, there’s always between 2 and 5 events or activities. There are generally choices that will suit the interests of the whole community. Five days a week, from Monday to Friday, there is an exercise class each morning. The exercises change from day to day to keep everyone motivated, interested and active. A community volunteer comes in once a week to do a Tai Chi class.

Other activities at Wickwire Place include bingo, tea time, card making, bridge club, lexicon, movie nights, Wii bowling, skip-bo, crazy 8’s, 45’s, cards and dominoes. These and many other activities

generally keep folks as busy as they want to be. Seniors LINCS (Living Independently with Community Support) in partnership with Wickwire Place run an adult day program two times a week, engaging in activities to help promote and maintain both physical and cognitive well being. In addition to the regular programming and Seniors LINCS, volunteers from the Wolfville area community (12 to 15 of them) visit at Wickwire Place Assisted living Residence for social activities. Students from Acadia’s kinesiology department often present and participate in music programs such as singing and dancing. A few choirs from the area hold their practices at at Wickwire Place Assisted living Residence to entertain the community as well. The Wolfville Child Care Center visits to participate in parties or dances with Wickwire’s residents and sometimes make crafts and enjoy snacks. Guest speakers visit and present talks. From Annapolis Valley Health to various church groups, choirs and “Singing of the Faith”, it is a busy place. It’s clear that Wickwire Place Assisted Living Residence has the feel of community, the warmth of home and provides opportunities for the residents to thrive and live well. You’re invited to join me next month to learn more about community living at Wickwire Place Assisted Living Residence. Wickwire Place feels like home.

“Need” – something essential for survival “Want” – something beyond a need that makes life more comfortable or convenient

Determining what is a “need” and what is a “want” is important in looking at spending habits. Making small changes in spending habits can result in a big difference. There are only a few basic needs people have to survive- shelter, food and water, basic health care and hygiene items and clothing. However, these needs can very easily fall into the wants category (ie large house, gourmet or fast food and brand name clothing). I am not saying people should not spend their money on “wants”. There is nothing wrong with living as opposed to just surviving. However, “wants” are the areas you can reduce expenses and increase savings. Considering whether a purchase is a want or a need will give you a new perspective on your spending. Perhaps, you may decide to reduce some of the daily “wants” to save towards something big like a vacation. Many wants are a consequence of looking for convenience. Buying coffee and eating out are good examples. One coffee per weekday is almost $500.00 year.

Can I claim my mortgage interest on my home?? Doug Morgan H&R Block, New Minas

Owning a home is expensive and being able to claim some of the costs on your tax return would be a big help. But there are very few deductions a home owner can claim. In the U.S., there is a provision that allows some homeowners to deduct mortgage interest on their tax returns. This can add up to substantial savings, but this deduction is not available in Canada. For home owners, the tax benefit comes when you sell. Every taxpayer is allowed a capital gains exemption on their principal residence. American homeowners only receive a principal residence exemption on the first $250,000 of the capital gain. So even if you live in a hot property market, you will not have to report the capital gain on your home. On the other hand, if property values are down when you decide to sell your home, you are not allowed to claim the capital loss on your return. You must have lived in your home at some point in the year in order for you to designate it as your principal residence for that year. But you can only have one principal residence – if you own more than

36

APRIL 2013 SCOOPS

one property, you will probably be reporting capital gains on the second home. Self-employed Canadians can claim mortgage interest on their principal residence if they work in their homes. They can claim a percentage of the interest based on how much space the office takes up in the home. Employees who work from home are not allowed to claim mortgage interest as an expense. If you are a first-time homebuyer, the homebuyers’ tax credit offers $750 in tax savings.

Grabbing lunch at work or supper on the way home adds up very quickly. Although we need food to survive, convenience food is a want. Impulse buying is done primarily to satisfy wants. A great strategy is to use a “30 day test”. Write down a list of things you want. Wait 30 days then recheck the list to see if you still want the same things. Avoiding impulse buying can be done by leaving credit cards at home when shopping and avoiding shopping (including online) without a specific purpose. Convincing ourselves that we “need” something and not just “want” it is easy, but really, the only people we are fooling is ourselves.

Retirement income plans – turning your retirement savings into a comfortable lifestyle Ensuring you have put enough money aside for your retirement can take years of disciplined saving. It can also be a painstaking process, especially with so many other demands on your money. As a result, when you’re ready to retire, you’ll want to make the best use of the money you’ve worked so hard to save. If you choose to take your savings in cash, the whole amount will be considered income, and up to half may go to the government through taxes. In comparison, a retirement income plan can help you maximize your income more tax effectively. So what is a retirement income plan? A retirement income plan is simply a way to turn your retirement savings into an income. With a broad range of retirement income products available, we can customize a plan to help you maximize your retirement income and meet your needs. • Registered retirement income fund (RRIF): A RRIF is really a continuation of your RRSP. Rather than making contribution like you did with your RRSP, you must withdraw a minimum amount each year. • Life income fund (LIF): Similar to a RRIF, except that it can be used only for locked-in-funds and there is both a minimum and maximum annual withdrawal amount. Depending on the pension legislation in your province, you may have to convert the funds to a payout annuity when you

reach a specified age. • Locked-in retirement income fund (LRIF): Available only in some provinces, an LRIF is an alternative to a LIF and can be used only for locked-in funds. One difference is that no pension legislation exists requiring you to buy a payout annuity at a specific age. • Payout annuity: Provides you with a series of guaranteed payments for either a specified number of years after retirement, or for your lifetime. There are several types of payout annuities and payment options available.

alternative to a payout annuity or a RRIF. Not only does it offer the stability and comfort of an income for life but also the opportunity for potential income growth linked to market performance. Getting help is invaluable when it comes to important retirement planning decisions. I’ll take the time to understand your goals first, help you develop the best strategy to achieve them and select the appropriate income plan for you. No two situations are the same, so take the time now to get the information you need.

• Flexible Income Plan: This product is an innovative

LILLEM STONE SURFACES Crowd Funding/Crowd Sourcing to Support Local Business Goal is $100,000 Dollars In the last issue Lillem Stone had written a somewhat controversial article about big corporate businesses pushing in on small business here in Atlantic Canada by throwing their deep pockets and government assisted wallets at us little guys. We don’t feel that’s fair to us or YOU! Lillem Stone has made a great name in the last two years! We have no problem getting the sales and making beautiful kitchens. We have been the main company that helped sponsor the 1st Annual Big Daddy Biker Bash to raise funds for Prostate Cancer. We don’t have any outside sources financing our growth. We actually have been running on receivables since day one. We were able to acquire the money to have good equipment and to start selling amazing stone. This is phenomenal for a small business and is not a method suggested in “Starting a Business 101”. Financing is crucial. The only real issue is having capital at hand when we need it in the growth curve to make sure we are efficient and able to keep our projects on a timely manner. That being said, I am passionate about small business and love what I do. I hope that Lillem Stone grows in a way that is adding value and being fair to

help local companies grow in the same way someday. This is a business that requires financing to grow and compete in the market to ensure efficiency. This type of assistance has been offered to us by many sharks. However, we want to grow properly and to have the choice to give back to our community in the not too distant future. That won’t happen if we sell our souls. We are launching an Investment Campaign that is funded by you. It is called “Crowd Funding”. In Canada we are not allowed to provide equity through this business financing model. We can offer something of value. So, with every donation to our campaign to raise funds and be an equal player in our market, Lillem Stone is offering to match dollar for dollar towards a granite application on your own project in the near future or ten percent return on pay back if you choose to not do your own project.

oldorchardinn.com All donations under 100 dollars will receive a cutting board and all donations fewer than 50 dollars will receive a pot trivet both of which will be made from our stone. Crowd funding was used to launch Brooklyn Warehouse Restaurant in Halifax. It provided the capitol so that the restaurant could do its renovations last year. This is something that works and helps support local business. We have grown up here, we live here and have chosen to raise our family here. We are passionate to keep local business strong for our future generations. Visit our website to find out how you can support through PayPal, Act now as the campaign has started and will end in less than 30 days. Website: www.Lillemstone.com. HOME SAFETY FIRST AID TIPS Courtesy of Foster’s Fire & Safety Ltd.

y t e f Sa ips T

Safety is important everywhere you go not just at work. you should have a first aid kit at home in case of accidents.. Here are come first aid home safety tips for treating the most common home injuries. 1. Bug bites Make sure the person is not having an allergic reaction. Signs to look for are shortness of breath, swelling near the bite, dizziness and itching. If they are having an allergic reaction call for help immediately. Otherwise, clean and put a bandage on it to keep it clean and you can use an ice pack to reduce pain or swelling. 2 . Nose Bleeds. Keep calm. Make a “thumbs up” with your hand. Press your thumb firmly against the side of your nostril. Sit or stand still and lean forward slightly to stop blood running down your throat. Hold you thumb in place for 5 - 10 min Release the pressure slowly. 3. Cut fingers can be tricky. Decide how bad the cut is. Does needs stitches. If not, use a mild soap and water to clean the cut than dry it with a clean cloth. Next use an antibiotic ointment to help reduce the chances of infection. Wrap the cut with a clean gauze and adhesive tape. 4. Splinters can be extremely painful and cause infections if left untreated. Clean the area with soap and warm water. Using a clean needle and a pair of tweezers pull it out using the tweezers. If it is under the skin, use the needle to scrape of a layer of skin until you can reach it with the tweezers. When splinter is removed, clean the area with an alcohol pad. 5. Sprains - Use the RICE method. Rest, Ice, Compress and Elevate.

What do you want a towel to do?

‘Stay-cations’ are in….

Catherine Reid Absolutely Fabulous Bed Bath & Home

We love what we do, and we have created an incredible workshop to do it in.

DRY!

It’s time to talk about towels for spring and to give you some information on Turkish cotton. Cotton is grown for specific purposes; some will be turned into clothing, or bedding or towels. Some cotton will absorb a great deal of moisture and some will not. Turkish cotton is highly valued for bath towels because of the long fibre in the cotton. This long fibre is what gives Turkish towels more durability, stronger fabric, smoother finish and a softer feel. In fact, with a long fibre the more you wash the towel the better it will perform. Interestingly, Turkish cotton is not the most absorbent cotton in the world but it performs the best as a towel, especially in humid conditions, because with too much absorbency the towel will pick up moisture from the air and feel damp before you ever use it. Turkish cotton is still very absorbent, yet dries quickly once it has been used to dry you off. Traditionally Turkish cotton was only available in white but today’s trends give us much more variety so here at Ab Fab we are able to offer 14 colours of this fabulous, fashion-forward bathroom accessory. With new shower curtains in stock and spring in the air, we are looking forward to helping you with a bathroom makeover this spring! Watch for the ‘Soak up the Savings’ Sale in April. A ‘Stay-cation’ is a term referring to people who choose to remain at home versus traveling during vacations. Your home is often your biggest purchase in life and you want to enjoy it to the fullest. Today’s focus on landscaping and our moderate climate make an outdoor timber structure the perfect fit. Pergolas are an open grid structure made of timber posts, plates and braces. They often support grapevines or flowering vines. For the avid gardener, the pergola is a stunning focal point. It provides a place to sit in the shade and enjoy the outdoor landscape. Pavilions are also an open structure, only the roof is covered. It offers more protection from the weather for year round use. You often see pavilions over hot tubs and dining areas. You can customize your pavilion with custom lighting, surround sound system, dream BBQ, a hammock swing or maybe an upper loft for sleepovers? Proper wood selection, good preparation and ample stain coverage will ensure a long time of enjoyment.

Accuracy Automotive FAQ’s Frequently Asked Questions by Owners of New or Leased Vehicles My new car dealer says I have to return to their facility for all of my car’s maintenance to keep from voiding the warranty. Is this true? Absolutely not. You can have routine service done by any competent independent service center, shop or garage and still maintain your warranty. What do I have to do to keep my vehicle’s warranty in effect? Make sure your vehicle is serviced at the intervals specified in your owner’s manual or warranty booklet and keep clear records of your vehicle’s maintenance. Be sure to have the date, products installed, vehicle identification number, and mileage recorded on the invoice. If I do have a warranty-related problem with a dealership, what rights do I have? If you do have a problem, contact the customer service department of the car manufacturer and ask for assistance. They are concerned with customer satisfaction and may be able to help.

Back to the Garden Have you seen the purple and yellow crocuses bravely poking their heads out of the snow? Apparently they have more faith than I do that spring is really here! I have to admit that, between storms, I can feel the difference in the sun. It is warmer and it entices me out of my winter sleep, ready to embrace the awakening of spring. Like most Maritime gardeners, I’m anxious to see flowers blooming and start planting. Last summer I moved to a north-facing location and knew I would be limited in what I could plant there. My flower pots get about two hours of sun at the end of the day. Despite that I had great success with my begonias and impatiens. But, this year I want to try something different so I popped into Blomidon Nurseries and spoke to Michelle Muis. She was busy preparing for their display at the Spring Ideal Home Show in Halifax but she was kind enough to take a break and share some of her gardening expertise with me. I started by asking what other shade loving plants might work in my location. Pansies were the first plant that she mentioned. I have always loved pansies because they come in so many colours and they have a cheerful nature. They are sold as annuals but they will sometimes seed themselves and come up year after year. Fuchsia is another plant that requires shade and it will also attract humming birds to your garden. Michelle also suggested ground cover with silver leaves. It brightens up the garden and is low maintenance. When Michelle told me that she will be doing seminars at the home show I was curious. The one that caught my attention was ‘How to save time and money with good plant selection’. Who doesn’t want more time and money?!! Each spring season seems to bring new varieties. This year Blomidon Nurseries has gold flame and magic carpet spiraea that require less pruning and bloom longer than the older varieties. They grow into a nice round bush without any need for pruning so more time to soak up the sun on a warm

spring day. Another new variety is in the hydrangea family. They bloom on the new growth as well as the old wood, giving more blooms every year. One trend that I have noticed in gardens over the last few years is ornamental grasses. They range from four inches to ten to twelve feet tall. Because they grow so fast, many people are using them for hedges. They offer privacy while also enhancing the look

of your home. Grasses are great for giving dimension to your garden and they change as the summer progresses. They are just as beautiful in the fall when they dry and turn yellow as they were in the spring and summer. But let’s not think of the fall just yet. Spring is just awakening. It’s time to rake the remaining leaves, sprinkle some fertilizer and enjoy your garden as it comes back to life.

Storage; where we store our stuff.

Yes, fall is definitely upon us and we now need to get our stuff organized throughout our homes in preparation for hibernation. It’s time to find places for all the stuff we have accumulated and pulled out for our seasonal use over the past several months of outdoor, casual, summer living. You may live in a tiny studio apartment or a spacious house: whatever our living situation is, we always seem to need more storage space than we can accommodate. Often we could accomplish much more organization and storage potential than our homes presently present by applying a tad of ingenuity and practicality. Try to get yourself into the mine set of putting every potential space into storage mode. This can be done either on a budget without breaking the bank, or by injecting an investment that makes “cents”. The key here is to not sacrifice style in the process. Get back to basics by having this personal conversation with your home: • Are you just making do with the inherited storage capabilities of you house, which may have suited the previous owners or not. • Or do you live in a new build, which gave thought to the generic and predictable storage closet theme, without much thought of your family’s real lifestyle. • There is no denying that we live in a consumption- orientated society; are you amongst those who have over time, acquired more possessions than you perhaps realize or care to admit. Storage has advanced as a priority, especially in the last 15 years and we are seeing a swing into smaller and more efficient use of square footage, and therefore, the invention of clever design and fixtures to meet this trend. The perk of have improved storage systems in our homes, is that our lives can be so much more easily organized and

streamlined, which frees up our time for more enjoyable ways of expending it! Along with storage becoming a major priority in our homes, with big returns on the efficiency of running our homes, so have we made leaps in the ingenuity, style and look of our tuck away places. Homes today should be designed for our lifestyle pattern of today, which is so very different than that of yesterday. You can achieve beauty and efficiency under one roof, while emanating the expression of our individual personalities. I my mind, this is the perfectly planned design. Here are a few places you may be able to tuck in: • Frame a hallway with shallow shelving to collect all those things coming and going, in and out of the house. Fill in function with family photos and treasures, to add that personal touch of interest. • Even the smallest available, to the very obvious space, can found under our stairs to present a storage opportunity, as well as a functional nook. • High ceilings can allow for wall-wide overhead storage for those seasonal articles we need to access once or twice a year. Any storage space can be designed in keeping with the overall architectural style of the house or room. • Fireplaces and mantles can be a lost opportunity for optimal storage, think outside and around your firebox when installing your unit, whether a Reno addition or a new construct, there can be storage space abound, yet not created here. So please, take my advice this fall, and have that “storage chat” with your house, it could do wonders for your live-in relationship! Designing yours spaces & places, Betty Ann

It’s Spring again! Caleb Howden Denim Homes Inc.

It’s Spring again! We are getting ready for the snowmelt, the blooming buds and new home construction! If you are thinking about building your new home in 2013, there is no better time to get started. Like all big life decisions, building a home requires a lot of consideration - with design, building structure, cost, location etc. We’ve compiled a little checklist outlining items to consider when building a new, energy efficient home. 1) Location/Orientation: Are you building on the South Mountain, the North Mountain, or the valley in between? How do you envision your home orientated on your land? If your view is to the North (facing Cape Blomiden for example) and you want to be able to look out at it every day through large view encompassing windows, you’re going to want to invest in triple-paned low-e Argon windows for that side of the house to reduce your heat loss on that side. If your view is to the South, you’ll want to have large, double-paned low-e Argon windows, for the sunlight will be an excellent source of passive solar heating as it shines through during the day. 2) Slab-On-Grade or Basement: Many people feel that they need a basement to accommodate proper storage. However, if a slab-on-grade home is properly designed to suit your needs, it can easily accommodate storage needs, as well as reducing your interior heating volume and therefore your monthly heating costs. Basements do serve their purpose however, and if you are set on having the additional floor, make sure your building contractor is going to properly insulate, air-seal and heat the area.

Custom - Quality - Efficient Call us today to discuss your building options

3) Heating system: As discussed in our previous AVS columns, your heating system should be tailored to fit your home design. If you are building a two story home with a basement, a fully ducted air source heat pump is your best option to adequately and efficiently heat your home. If you’re building a one story slab with an open concept main living area, a ductless heat pump is a viable option - with the potential to add in-floor radiant heating as your electric back-up. Whatever you decide, make sure your heat source is going to keep you comfortable and is efficient with its power use! You’re building a home so that you can customize it to your needs. The decisions you make now will affect you as long as your living in it, so make sure that you build an air-tight, well-insulated building envelope that will save you money (and headaches) over time. Happy building!

The Foundation also supports prevention and education programs that help stop the cycle of family violence and help youth to develop healthy relationships. Last year, the New Minas office raised $5500 with the support of staff, clients, local businesses and the public. This year, they hope to break $6000! Members of the community are encouraged to get involved. You can help by donating gently used items and/or coming out to get a great deal for a great cause. When deciding about a generator system for your home , there are some options. These depend on the amount of power you need during an outage and the level of convenience you would like.

Generator Systems

A fridge may be all you need to keep operating. In this case a portable gas generator and an extension cord would do. If a fridge, freezer, microwave, and water pump need to be operational then a manual transfer panel with a gas generator and patch cord could be an option. The portables need to be set up and started outdoors. The generator should be started periodically and a fresh supply of gas should be at the ready. A propane standby generator does not require you to store gas or manually start the generator and switch over the power. This is the most convenient system and can be sized to run a few circuits or the whole house. In addition the standby generator is programmed to exercise once a week to keep everything in working order.

IRON IRON and more IRON Pat Lane

Seems like everywhere I go in this valley I run into someone who has an Iron problem. This has got to be the most frustrating kind of problem for the homeowner. The tell tale sign of Iron is the reddish brown staining found in the sinks and toilets and sometimes a very unpleasant odour. You have to stay ahead of cleaning this up because it can get right into the porcelain and permanently stain the fixtures. Iron can be a disaster but now its a lot easier to fix. Ferrous Iron has always been easy to remove. The real problem has been Ferric Iron. The old solutions were not very reliable with lots of issues and upkeep. Now we have much better tools to deal with this nasty culprit. The one I like the best are the new air pressure systems which allows more oxygen to contact the water which turns the iron into a solid and is easily removed by the media. I’ve used this on very high Iron locations and gotten spectacular results. It removes the odour too. The only concern with these units is that the PH must be 7 or higher. If the PH is too low we need to treat that or the pressure filter will be compromised. Other than that these units have shown to be very reliable and long lasting. Remember for a free water quality evaluation give me a call anytime at 679-0221 Kind Regards Pat Lane, The Water Guy

First of all most reputable home builders provide both workers compensation and liability insurance coverage as part of the building agreement for a new home. Don’t assume this. Ask for a worker’s compensation clearance letter to assure that coverage is in place and that the builder is in good standing (premiums are paid and up to date). Also ask for a certificate of liability insurance. Given the nature of the business and level of risk a minimum you should expect would be 1,000,000.00 of liability coverage. Worker’s Compensation covers injuries to a worker at work or, specifically in this case, on your job site. Liability insurance offered by your builder provides coverage for any damages as a result of errors or omissions on the part of your builder, his employees or subcontractors. So what else could go wrong and why would you need any coverage if you make sure all this is in place. Acts of god like windstorms and lighning strikes wouldn’t be the builders responsibility and, as such, become the homeowners liability. These are just a couple of examples. Most insurers wouldn’t share this point of view but most people don’t have any idea of what they have for insurance until they have a loss. The same is true for your builder. He could provide you a libility insurance certificate for 2,000,000.00 in good faith and figure that everything’s covered. Then along comes a loss and the builders insurer disputes responsibility for the builder. This has and does happen. Best case scenario is that both the buider and homeowner have insurance and the issue is given to the two insurers to sort out. This scenario provides the best chance for a Builder/Homeowner relationship to survive an insurance loss and still reach a successful conclusion to the project.
