Buddhism has played a vital role in our multicultural nation, promoting religious harmony and stability. Now, as we step into a post-Covid era, new challenges emerge, beckoning us to explore how Buddhism can rise above these obstacles and remain as relevant as ever in our dynamic society. Singapore Buddhist Federation is proud to present a two-day symposium that seeks to address these pressing issues. Themed Envisioning Buddhism in modern-era Singapore, this symposium will provide a platform for esteemed Buddhist leaders to share experiences and shape the vision of Buddhism in Singapore. In addition, we have curated a diverse range of workshops specially designed for young adults. It encompasses essential topics such as entrepreneurship, leadership, marriages, and self-discovery. By nurturing the potential of our younger generation, we aspire to cultivate an even more robust and resilient Buddhist community in Singapore.

Established in 1949, the Singapore Buddhist Federation is committed to forging unity among local Buddhist groups and practitioners, perpetuating the wisdom of Buddha, disseminating Buddhist teachings, and advancing cultural education and social welfare. Within its purview, a cluster of affiliated institutions emerges, encompassing Maha Bodhi School, Manjusri Secondary School, Siddhartha Childcare Centre, Marine Parade Maha Bodhi Student Care Centre and more, spanning the educational and youth sectors.
Through spiritual observances like Vesak commemorations and Buddhist study classes, as well as cultural initiatives such as the publication of the quarterly "Nanyang Buddhism", the Federation not only upholds the core of Buddhism but also offers a diverse platform for the exchange of knowledge and culture within society. In the philanthropic realm, the Federation bestows bursary awards, engages in disaster relief initiatives, and extends education and vegetarian culinary courses to inmates, underscoring its robust sense of social responsibility. Concurrently, it proactively nurtures social cohesion by participating in entities like the Presidential Council for
Religious Harmony and the National Steering Committee on Racial and Religious Harmony, evincing its impact at both local and international levels. On the global stage, the Singapore Buddhist Federation actively engages in Buddhist conferences, underscoring a spirit of collaborative engagement. SINGAPORE BUDDHIST SYMPOSIUM 新 加 坡 佛 教 论 坛 I 2023
Founded in 1921, KMSPKS is one of the first traditional Chinese forest monasteries in Singapore. Today, the monastery sits on 75,470 square metres — equivalent to the size of almost 11 football fields — and is one of the most significant and renowned monasteries in Southeast Asia. Over the years, we have grown dynamically in Dharma propagation, community involvement and religious harmony efforts. As a monastery descended from the Linji lineage of Chan Buddhism, it also offers various meditation classes in order to provide a spiritual sanctuary for its devotees. Today, we are a community of Buddhists who come together to learn, practise and share the teachings of the Buddha.
光 明 山 普 觉 禅 寺（ KMSPKS）是 新 加 坡 人 的 心 灵 避 难 所 。在 此 可 学 习 到 佛 陀 所 教 导 的 智 慧 与 慈 悲 、实 习 正 念 、培 植 并 增 长 报 恩 、谦 卑 及 愉 悦 欢 喜 心 。 本 寺 创 立 于 1921年 ，是 新 加 坡 十 方 丛 林 之 始 。现 今 寺 院 占 地 75,470平 方 公 尺 ，总 面 积 约 等 于 11个 足 球 场 ，是 东 南 亚 最 驰 名 的 寺 院 之一 。这 些 年 来 我 们 致 力 于 推 动 佛 法 传 播 ，参 与 社 区 活 动 ，努 力 促 进 宗 教 和 谐 。作 为 禅 门 临 济 宗 法 脈 传 承 的 道 场 ，本 寺 也 举 办 各 类 禅 修 课 ，以 期 让 信 众 有 个 心 灵 的 归 处 。时 至 今 日 ，我 们 已 成 为 众 佛 教 徒 一 起 学习、实 践 及 分享佛 法 的 道 场。

By 1949, the British colonial government witnessed a steady increase in the number of Buddhists and Buddhist organisations in Singapore. Thus, the Director of Chinese Protectorate Mr. Zheng Huimin was tasked to advise the Buddhist community to establish an apex body. This body would provide leadership to all Buddhist temples and followers, serving as their sole representative for engagements with the Government. In response to this need, prominent community leader Mr. Lee Choon Seng was instructed to rally the Buddhist community for deliberations on the formation of a Buddhist Federation. Eventually, the Singapore Buddhist Federation came to fruition on 30 October 1949. Since its inception, the Federation has contributed significantly in the areas of Dharma propagation, education, charity and social welfare. Through the efforts of its successive leaders, Buddhism has spread its reach widely in Singapore. As we find ourselves in this everevolving modern era, characterised by digitalisation and artificial intelligence, it is imperative that we harness new technologies to overcome the challenges at hand. This approach not only benefits
society but also promotes national building and stability. I appeal to everyone to contribute your ideas so as to chart a new direction for the future development of Buddhism in Singapore. 1949年 ，英 殖 民 政 府 发 现 新 加 坡 的 佛 教 团 体 与信众 人 数 正稳步 增 长， 于 是 主 管 华民 政 务司的郑 惠民 先 生 便 指 示 佛 教 界 成 立一 个 最 高 机 构 ， 俾更 好地领导所有佛教寺院与信 徒，作为与政 府 沟 通 的主 要 桥 梁。为 促 成 此 目 标 ，当 时 的 华 社 领 袖 李 俊 承 先 生便奉 命 邀 集佛 教界僧 俗 共同 商 议 此 事 。最 终 ，新 加 坡 佛 教 总 会 遂 于 1949年 10月 30日正 式 成 立 。 自 成 立 以 来 ，新 加 坡 佛 教 总 会 致 力 于 弘 法 、教 育、慈 善 与 社 会 福 利 的 推 广。在 历 任 大 德 与先 贤 的 不懈 努力 与 领 导 之 下，佛 法 得 以 在 如 今 的 新 加 坡 开枝 散 叶。但 ，时代 的巨 轮 不 会 就 此 停 下。进 入 数 码 科 技 与 人 工 智 能 时 代 ，我 们 更 应 该 直 面 挑 战 ，掌 握 科 技 领 域 渠 道 ，通 过 不 同 形 态 展 示 智 慧 与 慈 悲 ，饶 益 有 情 的 同 时 也 促 进 国 家 的 稳 定与发 展 。 在 此，我 呼 吁 各界人 士 共 赴 盛 会，集 思 广益，让我们共同擘画未 来 新加坡 的佛教 愿景。 敬 祝 与会 诸 位 ，福 慧 圆 满！

Venerable Kwang Phing is the President of The Singapore Buddhist Federation and appointed Council Member serving in the Presidential Council for Religious Harmony since 1998. Venerable Kwang Phing is also the Abbot of Zu Lin Temple of Singapore. The Venerable graduated from Nanyang University in 1978. After his ordination in 1980, he went over to Taiwan, Thailand, Sri Lanka to seek Dharma guidance and studies. Venerable Kwang Phing was conferred the Contribution Award by His Excellency President of Sri Lanka, the Leadership Awards by His Holiness of Deputy Sangha Raja of Thailand in 2012, the Public Service Medal PBM in 2014, the Public Service Star BBM in 2023 by The President of Singapore and The Golden Pagoda Award by The Thai King in recognition of the Venerable’s contribution to Buddhist Dharma Works in 2019. 广品法 师是 新加 坡佛 教 总会 会 长，同时自 1 9 9 8 年 起 受 委为宗 教和 谐总 统 理 事 会成 员。广品法 师 也是 新加 坡竹 林寺的 住 持。 他于1 9 7 8 年 毕业于南洋 大 学。在1 9 8 0 年 受 具 足 戒 后，他 前 往台 湾、泰 国 和 斯里 兰 卡寻求 精 进和学习。2012年，广品尊者获 得了斯里 兰卡总 统 阁 下颁 发 的 杰 出贡 献 奖，以 及泰 国副 僧 伽罗陀 尊者阁下颁 发的 领 导 奖 。广品 法 师 于2 0 1 4 被 新 加 坡 总 统 授予公共 服 务奖章（PBM），随 后在2023 年获 颁公共服 务星章（BBM），以 及2019 年 获得 泰 国国王 颁 发的金 塔奖，以表彰他 对弘扬佛教的贡献。

Venerable Sik Kwang Sheng is the sixth and current abbot of KMSPKS. He was ordained in 1980 under the highly respected then-abbot of KMSPKS, Venerable Hong Choon. Following his ordination, he studied and practised in various countries, including Taiwan, Myanmar, Thailand, Japan and Korea. He spent three years in Songgwangsa, located in South Korea, practising Zen meditation. Venerable Kwang Sheng is also the Vice-President of the Singapore Buddhist Federation. 广 声 法 师 是 本 寺 第 六 任 暨 现 任 方 丈 。自 1980年 依 止 德 高 望 重 的 宏 船 老 和 尚 剃 度 出 家 ，襟 怀 师 训 、游 学 多 地 ，其 中 涵 盖 台 湾 、缅 甸 、泰 国 、日 本 和 韩 国 等 众 多 国 家 。他 曾 历 经 三 年 时 间 ，在 南 韩 松 广寺 进 行 深 入 的 禅 修 实习。除 此 之 外，广 声法 师 也 兼 任 新 加 坡佛 教 总会副 会 长， 为 佛 教事业 的 发 展 贡 献一己之 力。

Venerable Chuan Sheng embodies the perfect blend of scholarly wisdom and spiritual insight. He holds a BA (Honours) in History from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and a PhD in History and East Asian Languages from Harvard University. With a specialisation in Asian history and East Asian international relations, he dedicated 26 years as an academic staff at NUS before pursuing higher ordination in Taiwan in 2013. Venerable Miao Mu is the current Abbess and Chairperson of Singapore Fo Guang Shan, as well as a guiding Dharma instructor for the Singapore chapter of the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA). She leads the teams of both Fo Guang Shan and BLIA Singapore, achieving notable recognition by receiving the PA Community Spirit Awards from the People’s Association in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2023. Venerable Raja began his meditation journey at Yangon Mahasi Meditation Centre under the guidance of renowned Saydaw U Jatila. Ordained on 21 July 2004, he deepened his practice from the internationally acclaimed Sayadaw U Tejaniya at the revered Shwe Oo Min Dhamma Sukha Forest Meditation Center. Returning to Singapore, he introduced the Mandarin Mindfulness meditation courses and established the Satipatthana Sutta Chanting and Explanation Class. He presently leads the Theravada Buddhist Studies Chinese group, serves as an Assistant Resident Monk of Mangala Vihara Buddhist Temple and is the Dhamma Teacher at the Singapore Buddhist Federation Dhamma Class Students Society. In 2015, Venerable Raja initiated the Dhamma Kaki program at MVBT, offering seniors a space for weekly meditations and discussions. He is also the Religious Advisor for Chinese Theravada Buddhist Education, promoting Theravada Buddhist education and meditation in Chinese. 心法师 在仰光 Mahasi 禅修中心开始其 禅 修之 旅，并 获得 Saydaw U Jatila 的禅修 指 导。他于2004年7月2日受 戒出家，接 着在 Shwe Oo Min Dhamma Sukha Forest 禅修 中心 的 Sayadaw U Tejaniya 指导下修 行。 返回新加坡 后，他发起了正念（四念处）禅 修和大念处经念诵与解说课程。目前，他领 导南传 佛学班中文 组，同时 担任 祝福寺的 助理常住以 及 新加坡佛教总会佛学班同学 会（SBFDCSS）的 导 师 。2015年，他 在 祝 福寺发 起了“Dhamma Kaki”计划，为老年 人和退休人士提供每周禅修和佛法讨论的空 间，将佛教智慧融入他们的日常生活。此外， 心法师也兼任上座部佛教（CTBE）的宗教顾 问，积极推广上座部佛教的教法与禅修。

Wai Yee, an experienced social work leader, holds an MSc in Palliative Care from King's College London. She is actively involved in training social workers and healthcare professionals and teaches end-of-life care and grief counselling in the Master of Gerontology and Master of Counselling programmes with the Singapore University of Social Sciences. She is a member of the NUHS Patient and Family Advocacy Council and a Social Service Fellow with the National Council of Social Service. She received the Outstanding Social Worker Award in 2016 for her contributions. Erin Lee is a mindfulness practitioner and advocate. She is dedicated to her mission to improving the health and well-being of both individuals and communities through integrating attentional skills. Erin has worked with numerous organisations to design and introduce mindfulness-based initiatives on a corporate level. She also coaches individuals and small groups to deepen their insights on mindful living. She frequently shares her expertise at conferences and has founded several mindfulness-based communities and initiatives, including “Take A Pause”, “The Big Sit”, and “Niàn”. Dr. Kweh is a lawyer by profession and a parttime lecturer teaching law module at the Curtin University’s Campus in Singapore and the Murdoch’s University programmes at Kaplan’s Singapore Campus. He is presently serving as an elected Council Member of the Singapore Buddhist Federation (SBF) and the Honorary Secretary of the Bright Hill Evergreen Home. He is designated as a non-residential Fellow of Temasek Hall by the National University of Singapore (NUS) and has been appointed by the Ministry of Social and Family Development to serve as a licensed Solemniser and Deputy Registrar of Marriages.

A successful figure in real estate, Swee Seh transitioned into a remarkable philanthropist through many active charitable engagements. Guided by the compassionate teachings of Master Cheng Yen: “May all minds be purified, may there be peace in the community, and may there be no disasters in this world”, Swee Seh gave up his career and devoted himself to the Tzu Chi’s cause. Since 2012, Swee Seh has held the role of CEO at the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu-Chi Foundation (Singapore). In 2016, he assumed the position of Managing Director at the Buddhist Tzu Chi Merit Organization (Singapore) Ltd. Yang Ce graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Department of Dance and studied ceramics while she received her education in 2011. After graduation, she taught in local mainstream schools such as Nanyang Primary School and Swiss Cottage Secondary School. She was also with St. Luke’s Elderly Care for three years, engaging in clay art therapy activities with adults who had disabilities. She also travels extensively to enrich her knowledge on ceramics. In 2016, she founded Synceramics and set up her first pottery studio this year. Yang Ce enjoys creating works that have a great textural sensation and contrasting colours. She feels that perfection is the balancing act between man-made and natural. The everchanging clay provides internal peace. 杨 策 于 2011年 毕 业 于 南 洋 艺 术 学 院 舞 蹈 专业，在升学期间开始学习陶艺。毕业后， 她曾在 南洋 小 学 与瑞 士村中学 任 教。她也 在 圣 路加 乐龄关 怀 中心 服 务了三年，为残 疾 人士提 供陶瓷艺术治疗活 动。在 工作之 余，她 也 热 爱 旅 行，更希望 在 不 同 的 旅 程 中 拓 展 自己 对 陶 瓷 艺 术 与 陶 修 文 化 的 认 识。2016年，她创立了 Synceramics，并于 2023年成立自己的第一个陶艺工作室。 作为一 名艺 术 家，杨 策 从日常生 活 中 探 寻 灵 感，热衷于尝 试 釉 色与纹 理碰 撞出的艺 术 火 花 。她 通 过 精 巧 手 艺 塑 造 陶 瓷 艺 术 品 的自然 之 美，寻求 人 文与自然 平 衡 的 同 时，也在不 断 变 化的 陶泥 塑 形中寻回本 心 的安定。

Co-author of the book “Women Empowered: Personal Journeys to Become Empowered Women”, Ratna is dedicated to helping others overcome stress, cultivate resilience and tap into their inner strengths. They have been captivating audiences in various settings, ranging from temples to camps, by instilling Buddhist values through their melodious performances. Kwang Mong is a respectable counsellor with more than 10 years of experience, specialising in helping teenagers and young adults dealing with mental health concerns and providing marriage counselling to adult couples and individuals. As a certified professional counselling supervisor under the Australian Counselling Association and the Association of Psychotherapists and Counsellors (Singapore), Kwang Mong is conversant in providing counselling intervention using a plethora of therapy methods.

Kwang Mong also provides supervision to the counsellors of the Karuna Buddhist Counselling Services at the Dot Connections Growth Centre and lectures the "Diploma in Buddhist Psychotherapy & Counselling" course. Lee Huak is the President of the Singapore Buddhist Lodge (SBL) for four consecutive re-elections. During his 2014 to 2019 tenure, he oversaw the successful reconstruction of SBL's historic Mahavira Hall, coinciding with the 85th anniversary of SBL's establishment. As the President, Lee Huak upholds Buddhist principles of compassion and societal benefit, prioritising the propagation of the Dharma and the wellbeing of all beings. He actively contributes to Singapore’s social stability, racial harmony and religious unity. His initiatives include free vegetarian meals, medical services, family support, and bursary awards. With his fresh perspective and energy, Lee Huak significantly enhances the well-being of the Singaporean community. 立 发 堪 称为模 范领导，他目前 担任 新 加 坡 居 士 林 的 现 任 林长 。自 2 0 17 年 担 任 林长 至 今，他 已 连 任 四 届 林长 职 务。在 2014年 至2019年的 任 职 期间，居 士林创 林 85周年 之际，居士林的大雄宝 殿在 其 带领 下如期 竣 工。 作 为第 十 任 林长，立 发 坚 持 传 承 居 士 林 “ 弘 扬 佛 法 慈 悲 济 世 ”的 创 林 宗旨，将 历 代 先 贤 大 德 、历 届 林 长 的 遗 志 继 续 发 扬 光 大，并 将 弘 法 利 生作 为首 要 任 务。此 外， 立 发 还 致 力于推 行各种 公 益项目，如十方 斋堂、中医义诊、家庭服务中心及奖学金。 在 其领 导下，居 士林 焕 发崭 新 的面 貌 和活 力，为 新 加 坡 社 会 的 安 定 团 结、种 族 和 谐 与宗教团结作出了积极的贡献。

Dr. Lee Foong Ming graduated from the National University of Singapore and did her postgraduate studies in Buddhist Studies in the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. She specialised in Sarvastivada Abhidharma and received her PhD degree after seven years of studies.

Since joining BCS as a full-time staff in 2015, she has been teaching courses on history of Buddhism and Abhidharma in BCS. Han Juan is a seasoned arts manager/ producer, holding a Business Administration degree from the National University of Singapore, and is an alumna of the NUS Buddhist Society. Currently a consultant at Paper Monkey Theatre, she cofounded the Arts Collective D-KPO. Her career includes collaborations with independent artists, theatre companies and government bodies, including the National Arts Council.
