Hello, I’m Awar, a passionate Architect and Landscape Architect driven by a deep appreciation for the intersection of design, nature, and culture. Recently, I completed a transformative journey at YACademy, specializing in Architecture for Landscape. This immersive course opened doors to many connections and insights, placing me in direct contact with industry luminaries, including renowned architects, designers, and Pritzker Prize winners such as Tyo Ito
During the course, I had the privilege of delving into various perspectives and methodologies, expanding my knowledge base exponentially. One notable highlight was the opportunity to design a project focused on the adaptive reuse of an ancient disused cave nestled in the iconic marble quarries of Carrara. This workshop provided a platform for constructive critique, with luminaries such as Patric Luth from Snohetta and other esteemed architects like Lars Johan Almgren from Dorte Mandrop, Matthew Johnson from Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Philipp Nedomlel from Heatherwick Studio, Virginie Le Goffic from EFFECT, and Elora Hardy from IBUKU offering invaluable insights.
This experience honed my design skills and enriched my understanding of sustainable practices, historical preservation, and the delicate balance between built environments and their natural surroundings. I approach each project with a commitment to creating spaces that captivate aesthetically and resonate with a sense of purpose and harmony.
A multi-disciplinary program conducted by experts from various countries, will explain how thinking simultaneously on issues of housing & urban planning, landscape and infrastructure can lead to equitable cities for all.

The project’s objective is to highlight the potential of using MCF wood in architectural finishes. The design features modular units designed specifically for student housing needs, capable of being arranged in different configurations and scales. A key principle is designing for disassembly, ensuring ease of dismantling and reassembly. The approach integrates circular and sustainable practices with a zero-waste strategy. The design prioritizes high-quality craftsmanship and aesthetics while utilizing Eco-friendly materials and construction methods.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT
To achieve this, the architects must develop a residential unit tailored to student housing needs that effectively showcases the use of wooden finishes. These finishes encompass interior walls, flooring, ceilings, and exterior walls, which may extend to include furniture elements like panels, lamellas, or shingles. The chosen finishes should reflect the natural origins of the wood, recalling tree shapes, forest environments, or diverging from natural aesthetics as desired. The unit must be designed with a modular approach, allowing for multiple units to be assembled based on user requirements, both horizontally and vertically, with the flexibility to scale up as needed. The goal is to build from the intricacies of the finishes to shape the overall project. Starting from the smallest scale of finishes (XS), the architecture should progress to unit size (S), then multiple units forming clusters (M), and ultimately enable the creation of a larger building complex (L).

The ergonomic of the space design
The ergonomics of this space is centered around the body’s response to functional needs, achieved through modular, scalable units that adapt seamlessly to the main unit’s form. The equilateral triangle serves as a versatile base, transforming into various elements such as sofas, tables, chairs, dining tables, study areas, bathtubs, sinks, kitchen cabinets, and other facilities including beds with integrated storage. This system not only fulfills functional requirements but also enhances the space with unique aesthetic values and a distinctive identity.
COMPLEX’S CONCEPT AND GOALS
The anticipated project will cover an area of 2500 square meters and will accommodate around 60 single-bed units for students. Each unit will include essential amenities such as a lounge, restroom, kitchen, dining area, and study table.
While the project’s location is speculative and does not correspond to a real site, the focus is on the conceptual process. Numerous configurations are possible, adaptable to various domains and environments.
The proposed structural system is a hybrid of timber and steel. This project’s scope is conceptual rather than providing detailed solutions for all dimensions. The design is based on the shifting of units and load areas, aligning with the main vertical circulation. Services are proposed to be located on the ground level, functioning as an urban wall that not only serves as a dormitory but also benefits the surrounding neighborhoods.

The red crossed sign, featuring a triangle within the knot’s extension, symbolizes the potential for expansion, transformation, and adaptation of desirable units. This emblem represents the beta design concept, capturing our dynamic needs and evolving lifestyles, where nothing remains static. The complex offers opportunities for both vertical and horizontal expansion, responding to emerging needs. The building is engineered to embrace perpetual change, ensuring adaptability for the future.
Rooftop possibilities
The modular design is adaptable for constructing various configurations in natural settings or urban contexts. Each unit can serve as a pavilion for gatherings or as a complex of residential units atop vacant urban spaces. Thanks to the lightweight wooden structure and flexible volumetric design, these units can effectively utilize limited metropolitan space, acting as infill blocks.
In this example, the design envisions creating nearly contiguous rooftops, which may not receive direct daylight from urban streets but will foster community interaction, enhance biodiversity with green elements, and support community gardens. Additionally, the modular composition can incorporate photovoltaic panels on its tilted surfaces to generate clean energy. Natural ventilation is achieved by designating the central area as a common space for social gatherings, promoting airflow and social interaction

The site is in the city center of Erbil, the capital of Kurdistan region in Iraq. The site has its historical value attached directly to the citadel and is easily accessible from different main routes. Also, it is surrounded by many attractive landmarks with the high complexity of traffic flows encompassing an area of approximately 11 hectares.

The first step of our strategy is to improve the quality of urban green infrastructure. The site is located among the series of substantial open public parks, and provides a wide range of possibilities of linkage and increases the biologically active surface. Then, promoting biodiversity, the wildlife in the built-up urban area is highly restricted. In contrast, a city’s urban green infrastructure can provide a comfortable habitat for a variety of species. To design the park as a series of “green network” connections can afford possibilities for animals and insects to move, spread and colonize new habitats.

The furniture and elements’ concept inspired from the same pattern that has been used to cover the museum facades, which is inspired by the pattern and ornament of the local traditional art and design.

One of the most pressing concerns of the twenty-first century is mass urbanisation. The restoration of urban rivers is becoming increasingly important as cities grow and ground sealing increases, especially in the face of climate change and its implications. The goal of this study is to show how nature-inspired remedies might help the Hishkaroo river in Duhok, which has been canalised and neglected. The river restoration project communicates the city’s narrative naturally, generates a feeling of place, and unifies blue–green infrastructure in a symbolic way by providing recreational opportunities.

1. The small park has been used by locals, students, tourists, commuters and homeless people.
2. The street on the park’s east side is highly used by public transportation as a tram and bus station.
3. The flow of the people is quite heavy in the south and north direction, but it is average in the west direction, which comes from the university and Hungarian national museum. Also, there are many student hostels in the same direction.
4. No activities have been provided on the site, but the small portions are designated for the sitting area. That might be because the site includes car movement and parking plots.
5. The site is barely reachable by bicycles. Cycling is a growing mode of transport in Budapest and is actively promoted by the city. Still, unfortunately, there are no specific path lines toward the site or passing by. Bicycle riders can reach the site in RÖkki Szilárd Utca and Baross Utca.
6. Unfortunately, getting rid of the parking plot and car movement throughout the site seems inseparable. There is no specific boundary between pedestrians and car pathways.

The site is famous for the three different statues György Kiss’s statue titled “Chicken Bastard.” There is another statue on the square, which also depicts the shape of a child: József Kampfl’s Water Slideshow. In 2013, one of the then “islands” of the small park was also set to be a head boat.
Vegetation on the site has some tree lines on the side of pedestrians and with the two flower beds on the site. In the beds, there were ornamental grasses and pansy trees, which included tulips. Stone benches surround an arrest area in the middle between two beds. Most people use flower beds for sitting. Generally, the site is mostly covered by paving with asphalt and basalt stone 24 % is green, and 76% is paving.

Design Strategies
Some goals and strategies prioritize pedestrians and space.
1. Removing parking plots from the site.
2. According to the possibilities of expanding the area by merging other plots located to the other side of car parking.
3. Rearranging the sitting area inside the site in a proper way.
4. The statues will be the main elements in the design layout.
5. Making the space more welcome and flexible for flow and movement.
6. Enhancing Time and experience.
7. Using the same paving material.
8. Adding some solitary trees to give identity to the space, which would be for the sitting area in front of the buildings. In this way, for the active frontage areas, there will be a potential opportunity for the different stores on the first floorplan in the future to expand and change the type of function.

One of the exercises from our program was to have a ball of clay and start to play with it for one hour. Then whatever the result, the outcome should be a base for the conceptual design of the real project to serve a specific program.
The exercise remembers me a famous saying I have to quote from a famous architect Frank Gehry:
“I have always felt that, if you know what are you going to do in advance then you won’t do it “. That is like jazz music, they do not have any clue where they are going and somebody plays a few notes, and then they pick up and they do it.
In the end, the random clay composition model got me somewhere.

Hand drawing, representation and visual thinking nowadays are key issues in all architecture and art schools. Handwriting in this digital era is vulnerable to being dismissed through the thinking process. Thus, it should be fully integrated with digital techniques to be reused as a design tool to be effective. The base of the art and architecture schools’ curriculum needs to be integrated carefully.
According to the body of knowledge and research, that handwriting and sketching have a more effective functional role in teaching Design. Learning by seeing and thinking visually are key issues.
It was crucial as a part of my education to fully engage in analyzing and designing through sketching and graphic communication techniques.
