“KIPP empowered me to constantly work towards my goals through collaborating with others… because no one can make it alone.” YAEL BERMUDEZ KIPP NYC ALUM, CITY COLLEGE OF NEW YORK CLASS OF 2018
Like Yael (yes, that’s him leaping with joy on the cover), we know this work doesn’t happen alone. It’s your partnership that empowers our 13 schools, our alumni program, and most importantly, all the tomorrows of 7,018 KIPPsters from kindergarten through college and career. This year, you’ve empowered our students to once again defy expectations and outpace their peers on state assessments, to land on college campuses prepared, and to graduate college at higher rates than all students nationally. With every tomorrow, our KIPPsters are ready for what’s next, whether it’s moving up to 1st grade, starting college, or putting their degree to work to help the next generation of leaders. Today is a great day to be a KIPPster because their tomorrows have never looked better, thanks to you.

“I’m building leaders over here and it’s amazing to watch.” BRITTNEE ROCK KIPP NYC ALUM
3 | KIPP NYC 2017-2018 ANNUAL UPDATE
Brittnee Rock knows that the power to lead comes from within. She credits her days at KIPP for learning that lesson early on - holding down a first chair in orchestra that could be “challenged” by peers wanting the same leadership opportunity. “I was a shy student who had this hidden talent of being a pretty great violinist but I didn’t feel confident enough to truly lead my section. Mr. Levin not only provided a model of what leadership looked like but encouraged me to find my own voice and leadership style.” It’s a lesson she’s carried with her. “KIPP taught me it’s important to acknowledge the challenge but then also acknowledge that I have the power to overcome it.” Since graduating college, she's dedicated her career to empowering youth — directing college counseling and mentoring programs for students across NYC. She's built programs that recognize that real economic empowerment is born not just by accessing opportunities but by promoting confident leadership in the classroom, on campus, and in the communities. “It’s about more than just navigating their way to college. It’s about building up girls to be confident leaders who don’t doubt their right to be there and can use their voice.”

“KIPP taught me you not only have to move forward, but you have to pick up and go back to your community and give back.” LUIGGY VIDAL KIPP NYC ALUM, GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY CLASS OF 2018
7 | KIPP NYC 2017-2018 ANNUAL UPDATE
Grinding out term papers, late-night cram sessions, landing great internships: Luiggy Vidal knows what it takes to make it to and through college. As a recent college grad from Georgetown, who better to advise incoming freshman on how to chart a path to college graduation? That’s why we’ve added four new College Success Fellows as part of our KIPP Through College and Career program. Our College Success Fellows execute a “nearpeer” advising model of regular campus visits and monthly touchpoints to help students persist through college. Beyond their fluency in Instagram, Snapchat, and all things millennial, fellows offer their advice as first generation students who have proven it’s possible. And the fellows are stoked to pay it forward. As Luiggy notes, “Being able to create opportunity for the kids coming up after me is important. I advocate for our Black and Brown boys to be successful in academia and recognize that their worth is unmatched in spaces where they are not as represented.”

Elementary & Middle Results KIPPsters continue to outpace their city, state, and district peers through elementary and middle school. Most impressively, we’ve created the kind of learning environments that support learners at every level. The percentage of special education students and English Language Learners who are on grade level is 2X to 4X that of students across the city and state.
2017-18 Highlights • We’re doing more than closing the achievement gap. KIPP NYC students in grades 3-8 outperformed white students across the state in math (70% vs. 54%) and in ELA (59% vs. 52%). • 85% of KIPP NYC 3rd graders passed the math exam; 96% of KIPP Infinity Elementary students passed the test – our highest pass rate to date. • KIPP NYC 8th graders strongly outperformed their host districts in math (73% vs 21%) and almost equaled the passing rate of 8th graders in top districts like Scarsdale.
Progress towards future college success can be tracked as early as elementary school using state and national assessments. 60% of our 8th graders enter high school college-ready. Progress monitoring with the end in mind helps us pinpoint how to boost success along the way.

“Every child should be able to walk into the classroom and know that their voice is powerful.” LARIELY SANCHEZ PRINCIPAL OF KIPP FREEDOM MIDDLE SCHOOL 13 | KIPP NYC 2017-2018 ANNUAL UPDATE
“They believe one day that we will change the world. And at first I was like, really? We’re only 100 students. But now being here, I see that they really mean it and I am trying to support them….Sooner or later, there's gonna be more kids joining us, and then we'll have enough to actually change." JEREMY, 5TH GRADER AT KIPP FREEDOM MIDDLE SCHOOL
School leaders Sarah Fisher and Lariely Sanchez set out on a path to design two schools that center on the power of student voice. They imagined a place where alongside their ABCs, kindergarteners would explore identity by way of an ethnic studies course, where middle school students would document community service projects in video journals, where students could develop their authentic voices in writers’ workshops – all with the goal of helping students develop their own agency and become skillful communicators. “When you look to the great change agents of our time: James Baldwin, Maya Angelou, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Bryan Stevenson and Malcolm X, what do they have in common? They are all writers.” Lariely notes. We proudly opened KIPP Freedom Elementary and Middle Schools in August 2018 - the first step in our plan to expand opportunity to 3,300 more students in the Bronx.
2017-2018 ANNUAL UPDATE KIPP NYC | 14
What Empowering Tomorrow Looks Like Thanks to your generosity, empowering tomorrow is expanding opportunity. 2017-18 laid the foundation for our next phase of organizational growth where we’ll open 7 new schools in the place where it all began: the Bronx. You’ve set us on a path to grow from 7,000 students and alumni to more than 10,000 in the next decade.
15 | KIPP NYC 2017-2018 ANNUAL UPDATE
To prepare for this expansion, we’re focusing on key initiatives that will ensure our continued success as we scale: Supporting College and Career Success
Innovating and Aligning Curriculum
We don’t just want to get bigger and serve more students, we want to get better at the same time. Our longterm goal is that 75% of our students graduate from college and 100% find career success and fulfillment. While we continue to grow, we’ve revamped our KIPP Through College and Career program. We’ve expanded a two-year College Success Fellowship program that enlists recent KIPP alumni to implement a near-peer model of college advising. Fellows embed themselves on the college campuses our students attend to provide inperson support and foster partnership with colleges and universities. We’re also piloting a new career readiness curriculum to prepare college juniors and seniors to enter the workforce.
We’ve made significant investments in redesigning our curriculum to foster deep conceptual understanding of math and reading comprehension. We’ve also hired a K-12 Director of Science who will work to align STEM curriculum from counting by tens on through Calculus. Building a strong foundation in elementary and middle school promotes advanced course-taking in high school and will ensure our KIPPsters are ready for the jobs of tomorrow.
Building a Talent Pipeline Great teachers are the key drivers of successful classrooms and great principals are the key drivers of successful schools. We’ve created an in-house leadership development program that aims to identify and support promising leaders. Through coaching, real-time stretch projects, and specialized professional development, we’re developing the leaders we’ll need at the helm of our new schools.
None of this programming would be possible without the investment you make to support expanding opportunity.

17 | KIPP NYC 2017-2018 ANNUAL UPDATE
Empowering tomorrow is all about the here and now. It’s planning, working, and training hard today to ensure KIPPsters are ready for the journey ahead. It’s about helping students recognize that their achievements and futures have no limits when they find their passion, put in the work and are supported along the way. It’s about giving them the opportunity to develop their sense of self and embrace growth so that they become powerful leaders and creative problem-solvers.
Thank you for helping our students thrive today. Thank you for empowering the future.
