I am an African… I owe my being to the hills and valleys, the mountains and glades… to the Khoi and the San whose desolate souls haunt the great expanses of the beautiful Cape. I am formed of the migrants who left Europe to find a new home in our native land… of the Malay slaves who came from the east…of the warrior men and women that Hintsa and Sekhukhune led, the patriots that Cetshwayo and Mphephu took to battle… I am the grandchild who lays fresh flowers on the Boer graves. Being part of all these people, and in the knowledge that none dare contest that assertion, I shall claim that - I am an African. Today it feels good to be an African. Extracts from Thabo Mbeki’s speech delivered on the occasion of the proposal of South Africa’s new constitution, 8 May 1996
The rising sun is a symbol of rebirth and the source of life, light and the wholeness of humanity.
The secretary bird, symbolising protection of the nation, is a messenger of the heavens that brings grace to the earth.
The protea is an emblem of the beauty of our land and the flowering of our nation.
The spear and knobkierie symbolise defence and authority. They are lying down to depict peace.
The tusks of the elephant symbolise wisdom, strength, moderation and eternity.
The shield shows both identity and spiritual defence.
.
The human figures are a testament to our common humanity and heritage. They are greeting each other, symbolising unity.
The ears of wheat are an emblem of fertility that symbolise growth and the development of our potential.
The motto means - Unity in Diversity
The Coat Of Arms, which exemplifies the extraordinary creativity of our people through the ages, inspires our united and diverse nation to shine as brightly as the sun. The words contained within the Coat Of Arms are in the ancient /Xam language of the San people. It calls for the nation to unite in a common sense of belonging and national pride.

WORLD'S SMELLIEST ANIMAL Also called the African striped polecat, a zorilla will put any self-respecting skunk to shame. A squirt of its secretion not only leaves the victim temporarily blinded but the revolting smell lingers for several days.

The elephant has an impressive weight of 5 000 kg - more than 5 VW Citi Golfs!
FASTEST FLYING BIRD
WORLD'S RAREST AMPHIBIAN
When stooping to catch prey, a peregrine falcon may reach speeds of between 250-380 km/h.

Hum an RigH ts Day
8:30 9:00 9:30 10:00 10:30 11:00 11:30 12:00
During apartheid, many people’s rights were abused. For instance, black people were forced by white superiors to carry special identification documents called passbooks, without which blacks could be fined or imprisoned. Freedom of expression, of association, of movement and residence – and therefore dignity was denied to black people.
12:30 13:00 13:30 14:00 14:30 15:00 15:30
In 1960, black people in Sharpeville organised a demonstration against the pass laws. 69 demonstrators died and 186 were injured. The carnage made world headlines and the government subsequently banned black political organisations. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission, years later, found the police guilty of gross human rights’ violations.
16:00 16:30 17:00 17:30 18:00
Marked as a turning point in the fight for democracy, this day highlights the value of the rights of all South Africans. The new Bill of Rights was instituted and the Human Rights Commission was officially launched.
18:30 19:00 20:00
On this day people celebr ate value in and achievement the of new Bill of Rights. This Bill the is the cornerstone of South now Africa’s democracy and affirms hu man dignity, equality and fre edom.
