I do a lot of fishing in Oregon and my son Sam and I will soon begin fly fishing on the Deschutes River. After being cooped up inside for much of the winter and early spring, these outings are refreshing and much needed. We will observe deer, chipmunks, porcupines, heron, wild turkey, Canada geese, kingfisher, and osprey. Countless paintings I created were drawn from experiences on these fishing outings. I will bring a good camera equipped with a telephoto lens most of the time. It all plays a key role in finding the inspiration for my paintings. As I have said before, inspiration is everywhere — you just have to look.

There is definitely something about spring that inspires. Maybe it’s the longer, brighter, sunny days. Everything just seems a bit lighter, brighter and happy. Designs with flowers and happy spring colors start popping up in studio just as they start popping up in my yard. When I head to the beach early in spring, which I do, I’m never certain that it will be clear or habitable enough to even pick any pebbles. But the first time I climb over the sand dune and see the sand with the tiny pebbles scattered about, it’s always a very welcome sight.

I live in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. The winters here are cold and long, so the thought that spring is coming gets me through February. Next, I watch for
a vibrant yellow bush, the Forsythia, to start blooming. They won’t last long, but they offer a wonderful pop of color. Spring is like a firework show and every day you can look for the next bit of excitement. Spring is the time when everything comes back alive and the nature is amazing. Spring inspires me to make art! As a lover of color and nature, a lot of my subjects have been related to the outdoors, suns, birds, flowers etc. As you can tell from my artwork, I love color!

Susan Lordi’s artistic process is rather intuitive; she “sketches” in clay as she conceives, sculpts and carves the original of each Willow Tree piece, always with a focus on gesture that speaks to the universal. I love this time of year! I like to walk in the tangles of my garden and discover little jewels that pop up or volunteer through the weeds. Usually not planted or cultivated, these colorful surprises never fail to make me smile. I have always loved plants, gardening, digging in the dirt—working with the same design elements of texture, color, scale, and value that I work with in any medium, whether it’s textiles, sculpting a Willow Tree piece, whatever. To me, it’s creating with a medium, but the exciting thing is the medium is alive and it changes throughout the growing season.

Johannah Miller designer
Johannah Miller, the artist behind the Crossroads collection, began creating art as a child, when she received a simple piece of paper and a pen from her mother, also an artist. She studied ballet and music, but decided to focus on illustration and design, further developing an interest in ceramics and textiles and how to combine different mediums. Johannah strives to make lasting objects that help people feel joy. That joy can be because it is something they find functional day in and day out, because it was a gift, or because they find it beautiful.

I think the most inspiring thing about this season is spring cleaning. I love interiors and spaces and everything being in its proper place.
