Contents Foreword Welcome to the eighth edition of the Careers Catalogue, designed to help teachers, careers advisers and the young people they support to find-out more about career opportunities in the engineering and technology sector. Technology and engineering underpin both our standard of living, and the economic health of the UK. Teams of engineers and technologists, applying science and mathematics, touch our lives in many different ways and have a key role to play. A career in engineering, therefore, offers many challenges and exciting opportunities in a wide range of jobs. No matter what original specialisation is chosen, a career in engineering is a rewarding experience, in terms of job satisfaction and lifestyle. The UK economy is highly dependent on engineering and technology (E&T) skills. Qualified engineers are now needed across a wide range of sectors and settings to provide the necessary skills and expertise which are central to sustaining and further advancing the technology behind so many day to day products and systems. While many E&T students go directly into E&T careers, many choose to work in other parts of the economy; the skills gained by E&T students are highly prized in the finance and business sectors, for example, where the analytical and numerical skills set them apart. We thank you for your continued support and hope you find this latest edition to be of value to give support to those considering a career in engineering and technology.

Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers
Society of Environmental Engineers
(REME)
(SEE)
The British Army relies on thousands of pieces of equipment every single day. It is the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers that make sure that every single last one of them is in full working order at all times and ready to be used at a moments notice. Ensuring that the Army can work to maximum effect is a huge job, which is why REME soldiers are among the most highly skilled and trained in the entire organisation. The demands are tough, but in return the REME offers a training package that is second to none and gives the opportunity to gain qualifications that are always required in the civilian world. A job in the REME comes with plenty of action, adventure and excitment as well as the chance to travel the world.
The Society of Environmental Engineers (SEE) is a professional Society which exists to promote awareness of the discipline of environmental engineering, and to provide members of the Society with information, training and representation within this field. The SEE is a Licensed Member of EC(UK) able to register engineers as EngTech, IEng and CEng.

ECUK regulates the UK’s engineering profession, setting and maintaining standards of competence and ethics for engineers and technicians. It operates through 35 engineering institutions and societies, who are licensed to assess their members for inclusion on the ECUK Register. The Register has three sections: Chartered Engineer (CEng), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and Engineering Technician (EngTech), titles that are protected by Royal Charter an can only be used by registrants. ECUK also represents the interests of UK engineers abroad. One way it does this is through its active membership of international organisations and agreements. Registration The quickest route to becoming a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer is to first obtain an appropriate degree that is accredited to ECUK standards by one of the engineering institutions. A searchable database of over 4000 accredited courses can be found on the ECUK website, which also gives information about the type of qualifications and experience that are required by would-be Engineering Technicians. Candidates for any of the three titles are assessed against UKSPEC (UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence), copies of which can be downloaded from the website. Contact Address
