What season is it? I choose to ask a tree ‘Coz it’s lived through it all It has endured it all And still… It keeps standing. Changing it’s hue When it gets blue Dropping its leaves When the sun leaves Stretching its roots Holding on to what remains That’s how it stands. Today I choose to be the tree… To hold on to you, To fall for you, To grow by you, Maybe break my back for you And in it all… To still stand as me. So this day I’ll say as it is, To be unique I must To weather the storms I will, To sway in the wind I always do But to be swept by the floods… That I won’t. For this is my season, To stand tall and bloom, To let my plumes show To go where none dared And just be me. It is my season. @ Taurus

top tips for raising your LinkedIn profile

L

ooking to get noticed on LinkedIn? Perhaps you are wanting to grow your connec tions and further your career. A great LinkedIn profile is crucial if you want to grow your business or get noticed by your dream company. Here at EastAfrican, we have rounded up the best tips to help you raise your LinkedIn profile.

1

Keep all your basic info up to date

This may sound really simple, but it’s a common mistake that many people make. You could have an impressive profile but if your email address or phone number is outdated, then you may miss that one important call or message.

2

Personalise your URL

When you created your LinkedIn profile, a randomly-generated combination of numbers, letters and backslashes were used to make up your URL. This does nothing for your personal branding and it is always best to make your URL your name, brand or business name. To do this, go to ‘Edit your custom URL’ on your page. Now you can add your own personalised URL.

3

Tidy up your endorsements and keep it simple On LinkedIn, people can endorse you for all kinds of skills, sometimes skills you don’t actually have. This can lead to problems as employers aren’t going to be particularly impressed with your cat-sitting skills or your ability to chew gum. Keep it simple and stick to a few, relevant skills which will help you get that dream job. 13 BAM CARES ARTMORE ISSUE 2 FEBRUARY -MARCH 2022

4

Use professional pictures only

LinkedIn profile pictures should be recent and appropriate. Don’t use a photo that’s more than 10 years old, or one where you And it should be business-appropriate, in other words, don’t use a picture that looks as if it should be on a dating site or social media. A picture at your graduation (if it’s recent) or in a suit and tie would be suitable. You want to be taken seriously after all.

5

Proof read everything

Again, this may sound obvious, but it happens often. Make sure that every thing you write – both on your personal profile and in posts and comments to others – is grammatically correct. Typos and simple errors are a big no-no when it comes to companies looking for their next employee.

6

Put the ‘Summary’ box to good use

7

Treat your profile like your CV

8

Request LinkedIn recommendations

When creating your LinkedIn profile, you are asked to summarise yourself. This is pretty much the first thing that people will read when they click on your profile, so make it count. Ideally, you should have around four short para graphs discussing your work passions, key skills and qualifications, noting various industries you have worked across over the years.

Just like you should with your CV, your LinkedIn profile should highlight your accomplishments and experiences within the field. Avoid simply listing your job duties as you’re less likely to stick out and be remembered.

If a member of your team tells you you’ve done a great job on a project, don’t be afraid to ask them to write a recommendation on LinkedIn. Don’t be afraid to ask them to be specific, as “John did great on that project” isn’t very helpful.

“BAM CARES The ex-Catholic priest, Charles Davis, wrote, ‘An author, if he is big enough, can do so much for his fellow men. He can put words in their mouths and reason into their heads; he can fill their sleep with dreams so potent that when they awake they will go onliving them.’ But how? How do the artists make laws for society? The artist proclaims the laws but expresses them in the most indirect language: through metaphor and symbol, in image and able. He sings and dances his laws. It is taught, not in the school of law, not at the inns of court, but around the evening fire, where elephants and hares act as men. The body movement, the painting, the sculptures are his law books. The drums, the flutes, the horns, the strumming and plucking o n the strings of the musical instruments, are the proclamations of his decrees. He lures his subjects by the sweetness of his song, and the beauty of his works. He punishes the culprits with laughter, and awards the good mannered with praises. The English poet Percy Bysshe Shelly (1792-1821) suggested that artists were the unacknowledged legislators. But in Africa of tradition they are fully acknowledged, admired and feared for their sharp tongues. Moral science only arranges the elements that the artists have created. That is to say. the artist creates the central ideas around which other leaders, law makers, chiefs, judges, heads of clans, family heads, construct and sustain social institutions. But more, they also compose the festivals i n which these ideas are celebrated

JUSTICE FOR MY DAUGHTER @Phakeme Thee Maestro

How would you feel if you got a promotion at work and you can’t wait to tell your daughter so you quickly go home to tell your daughter but only to find the police in your front yard putting a cordon and they tell you that your sixteen year old daughter is dead? After a few days you get the autopsy results and the results say that your daughter was rapped then strangled to death. -This happened to a single mother by the name Penelope. Let’s start from the beginning. A very pleasant day for Penelope turned out to be the worst day of her life. Now the story begins What happens if you lose a reason to live and what happens to you if you lose the person you are living for. You must move on with your life no matter how hard it is. I still remember the day I lost my daughter like it were yesterday. I had gotten a promotion at work and I was so excited and I could not wait to tell my daughter so I knocked off early at work. When I got home, I got the worst shock of my life. I found people gathered in my front yard and the police were there too. The police told me that my daughter was dead and she was murdered. I was so shocked and I just didn’t know what to say or do. After a few days I got the autopsy results and the results stated that my daughter Paige was rapped then strangled to death. I was so angry at myself because I wasn’t there to protect my daughter. Soon people came to my house to offer their condolences and most of them were my colleagues, teachers from Paige’s school

A mother who solves the assault and murder case of her daughter and brings her killer to justice

Exposing my daughter’s assailant The police told me that my daughter was dead and she was murdered.

After Paige’s funeral, detective Kendal came to ask me some few questions about the day of Paige’s death and they gave me Paige’s bag. Paige had the bag when she died and the bag was found next to her corpse. Detective Kendal also questioned the people who found Paige’s corpse. According to the detective, Paige was not assaulted or murdered in my house so that meant that the person who murdered Paige dumped her corpse in my front yard. She also said that there was a possibility that Paige knew or was friends with her assailant. The killer knew the area where we lived very well because he dumped Paige’s corpse when almost everyone in the area was not home so he knew that no one would see him dump the corpse. I kept on wondering that who had killed my daughter. Paige had no enemies so I started thinking it could have been someone who wanted to punish me but I didn’t know who. I knew that the police would fail to solve the case so I started doing my own investigation.

I started looking for clues that would help me unravel the mystery. At first I thought that Paige was assaulted by one of her classmates or her friends. So I told detective Kendal about my suspicions and I gave her a list of Paige’s male classmates and friends. The police brought all of them into questioning but most of them had alibis. After I hit that dead end I asked Kendal to also question Paige’s teachers and her tutors. All the teachers had alibis except for Paige’s English tutor Mr Conrad Morgan. Conrad told the police that he was at home the day of Paige’s murder and he said that some of his neigybours also saw him that day. Kendal ruled him out as a suspect. The day after Conrad was questioned, he came to my house to tell me that the police had brought him in for questioning. He wanted to make it clear that he was not responsible for Paige’s death. After he left, I realised that I had hit yet another dead end. It was obvious that Conrad was not the killer. I was back to square one and I didn’t know what to do so I decided to stop investigating and I left everything in the hands of the police. I went back to my normal life but the difference was that Paige was no longer with me. I went back to work and I started working again. I became a workaholic and I spent most of my time at work.

The Necessary Evil (By Man Of Letters) L

izzy and Lucy were blood sisters who did almost everything together. Their parents felt elated seeing the amazing cooperation they showed, which was a good direction for the last born who was named Nimrod. The sisters remained glued right from their early lives in school until the time they were to join campus. Nimrod, who was known for loquacity and comedy used to say, "I doubt if even death would do you apart for you may meet your maker the same time." The friendship of the two was green given that they respected each other. When it was time to join campus, the sisters luckily received letters from the same institution. Pwani university was the factory to make them real women. It was going to be their first time to stay in Coast thanks to education. Yes, one needs books and incessant journies to enrich themselves with knowledge. In fact, travelling is better. "My good daughters, its unfortunate that my financial muscles cannot enable you join campus for now, but I will try my best to see you join in the next intake," their father said. This message saddened the two, and they looked dejected and disappointed. The father was late with bursary processing and other sources of cash. "I must join campus this season not next intake," Lizzy asserted. She sat on a sofa with arms locked looking collected. "Dear sister, how possible is it? Father has just said he is not financially stable for now," said Lucy. "I have a way because I have a will," answered Lizzy. The father was lost for words and left the room carrying a plastic chair and sat under a mango tree where he used to rest. The situation was not friendly, and the two sisters really felt hapless. Deferrement was practically inevitable.

The inquisitive sister kept asking, "Lizzy, what exactly will you do to matriculate this season yet father has promised next season?" My sister, I believe that there are some bad actions that can help when done carefully. I want to risk," Lizzy answered. Lucy looked confused and had eyes widened. She tucked in her lips for a moment then pouted akin to disgusted one. "Which action is this now sister?" Lucy asked. "I will get an affluent cradle snatcher to help me realize my dream.

It has worked for many and I must be one." Answered Lizzy. This was rated as tough and risky decision. The two had lived a true Christian life, but seemingly they had reached a junction where each had to take her direction. When Nimrod dismissed death doing his two sisters apart, lifestyle was listening. Lizzy got a Subaru man who was ten years older than her father and paid her campus fee at once. She studied and graduated successfully and currently working as a banker. The holy Lucy is untraceable. Her last seen read; in a bus station selling 'njugu kumi kumi'. Yes, life is not fair but it is still good.

No coffin, no grave

The diary revealed to the sea The rain anchored there at last Isn’t our flag red, black and white? So he wrapped himself well

REMEMBER US THIS WAY Staring into the dark abyss sitted by the beach, As the cool summer breeze swept across our faces, Soaked in our love for each other, We allowed our hearts beat rhythmically to the waves of our love, Rapid beats, yet so intense, Shallow breaths, yet so loaded with affection, Slow and steady breaths, yet so infused with passion. For in that moment, nothing else mattered. We clutched onto each other as we passionately held our hands, In the moonlit sky our faces carried the impression that we wanted this moment to undoubtedly last forever, For our peace and serenity were in check, Each of our hearts had found an abode, a safe heaven. And I kid you not, in that moment nothing else mattered.

BY EDGAR ALLAN POE

BIOGRAPHY My name is Dr. Maryanne Favour Ong’udi, a passionate Pharmacist with a keen interest in impactful leadership, intentional networking, mentorship, business, Health Policies and Health System Strengthening with a focus on augmenting patient centered care outcomes. I am an avid reader, a seasoned poet and writer. I love spoken word. I love reading because it allows me live outside myself and open up my world to other people’s minds and lives. I enjoy travelling, having conversations and watching sunsets. I’m thrilled by speed, I love adventures and making my way through life, one story at a time.

Love’s Philosophy By Percy Bysshe Shelley The fountains mingle with the river And the rivers with the ocean, The winds of heaven mix for ever With a sweet emotion; Nothing in the world is single; All things by a law divine In one spirit meet and mingle. Why not I with thine?— See the mountains kiss high heaven And the waves clasp one another; No sister-flower would be forgiven If it disdained its brother; And the sunlight clasps the earth And the moonbeams kiss the sea: What is all this sweet work worth If thou kiss not me?

The glow was undeniable, As the promises of our forever love reverberated and echoed in our minds, The thought of tomorrow and the future was almost impossible without picturing each other in it. Inadvertently, we dreamt, and even dreamt a little more, We excitedly thought of what names we'd give our little angels when they came forth, Took things a notch higher and even embedded our names on the beach sand, For even if the waves swept them away, they would be forever etched in our hearts, The constellations were aligned in our favour, And, nothing else mattered. We poured our hearts out that night, Story after story as we heartily laughed at just how crazy we had allowed ourselves to be in that space, I remember your voice, and all the calm, confidence and assurance it oozed as an outcry of confidence, We walked down the memory lane of our little adventures, as we remembered how we waited unabatedly for those experiences, How thrilling and exciting they all turned out to be, Most importantly because we had each other. Hearts full, moon at it's Zenith, Everything we ever wanted was here with us, just an actual heart beat away. Those days will come and will be here with us, On that day when the music stops, And those days when we're tempted to love each other just a little less On those days when it feels all grim, bleak and blank, I would like us to remember that we gave love a chance, That our symphony is forever, we just need to keep listening, For truly, in this moment, nothing else matters. For we'll always remember each other this way. ©Favourite

It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea, That a maiden there lived whom you may know By the name of Annabel Lee; And this maiden she lived with no other thought Than to love and be loved by me. I was a child and she was a child, In this kingdom by the sea, But we loved with a love that was more than love— I and my Annabel Lee— With a love that the wingèd seraphs of Heaven Coveted her and me. And this was the reason that, long ago, In this kingdom by the sea, A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling My beautiful Annabel Lee; So that her highborn kinsmen came And bore her away from me, To shut her up in a sepulchre In this kingdom by the sea. The angels, not half so happy in Heaven, Went envying her and me— Yes!—that was the reason (as all men know, In this kingdom by the sea) That the wind came out of the cloud by night, Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee. But our love it was stronger by far than the love Of those who were older than we— Of many far wiser than we— And neither the angels in Heaven above Nor the demons down under the sea Can ever dissever my soul from the soul Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side Of my darling—my darling—my life and my bride, In her sepulchre there by the sea— In her tomb by the sounding sea.
