CEO's MESSAGE This followed our Finalist– Gold Coast Community Organisation of the Year Award 2015 on International Volunteer Day. Congratulations to everyone who has made this possible.
radley B e s i n De It’s hard to believe that another 12 months have flown by and thousands of dogs and cats, who were in our care, are now in loving homes. But 12 months isn’t really a long time, when you look at the big picture. Animal Welfare League Queensland is 57 years old this year, forged on the Gold Coast in a partnership with the City of Gold Coast (Council). This valuable partnership ended the practice of shooting stray and abandoned dogs at the tip and was the catalyst to a program that has seen AWLQ save more than 115,000 animals across South East Queensland. This includes Brisbane and Ipswich. Thanks to everyone who has chosen to adopt, donate, foster and support this lifesaving cause. This doesn’t happen without individual, community and council commitment and we are very humbled by this support. This was recognised by the Gold Coast community this year with our team of staff, volunteers and foster carers combining to earn the Gold FM Community Service Award for 2016 during the City of Gold Coast Australia Day Awards.

We’re also jam packed with advice on pet care during summer (page 9), a warning about tick season (page 8) and the heart-warming story of June and Pinkie, again reaffirming the amazing impact Golden Hearts Seniors’ Pet Support program has on our community. Finally, I hope you have the best Christmas and New Year imaginable and make sure your animals are safely contained during the fireworks! Thank you to all of you who ensured so many of our animals have a home this year, and for the past 57 years. Happy reading!

Greyhounds are also a passion.
We’ve had a changing of the guard in November with Sylvana Wenderhold standing down as our AWLQ President to spend more time with her two, beautiful young boys. Sylvana is a staunch advocate for animal rights and has been instrumental in so many of AWLQ’s community and industry leading programs. This includes initiating the National Desexing Network (NDN) back in 2004 and involvement in launching Getting to Zero (G2Z) (euthanasia). The biennial G2Z summits have been great change

Incoming AWLQ President Sue Spencer ‘part of the furniture! Incoming President Sue Spencer is also part of the AWLQ ‘furniture’ and has been with the charity, mostly in a volunteer capacity, for nine years. The former executive secretary also has a love of animals, community and shares Sylvana’s passion for greyhounds. She is Community Liaison for AWLQ’s new Going Grey greyhound program. “I’ve always believed that you need to give back and now I have the opportunity to do so,” Mrs Spencer said. Sue initially volunteered, and then eventually ran, the beach walking
program for dogs. That involved at least three beach runs a week and then the collection of linen, its laundering and distribution. While Sue no longer has sand between her toes, she remains a permanent fixture in the laundry…for more than seven years; and that won’t change with her new appointment as AWLQ President. “It’s incredibly important to understand and be involved in the day-to-day activities of a charity,” Mrs Spencer said. And Sue is the first person to say that Sylvana has left ‘big shoes to fill’. “Sylvana is an inspiration,” Mrs Spencer said.

Project Empty Shelter Australian Olympic Champion, AWLQ Ambassador and animal lover Sally Pearson OAM took time out from her super busy schedule to launch our annual Project Empty Shelter campaign in November. Held on Saturday December 10 and Sunday December 11, the event is now in its fourth year and has become a popular way to support AWLQ, and the many abandoned and surrendered animals that come through its doors. “This is a chance to ensure every dog and cat in Animal Welfare League Queensland’s shelters has a home for Christmas,” Ms Pearson said.
“Come on down and make a difference. “There is no greater gift to a shelter animal than a loving home.” During the two day adoption drive adult dogs will be $50 and adult cats will be $20. We’ll bring you all the results in our next edition. #ChooseToAdopt #AWLQProjectEmptyShelter

Animal Welfare League Queensland (AWLQ) celebrated 10 years of Pups in Prison where inmates at Numinbah Correctional Centre (NCC) care for mother dogs and their litters as part of our Foster Program. “The program plays an important role in teaching prisoners about responsibility and compassion, but also in providing them with the opportunity to make reparation to the community,” NCC Liaison Officer Paul Longman said. Morris
Morris, beautiful on the inside and now on the outside, thanks to some TLC. You can never put a price on a life. That was never more apparent than with Morris the medium haired cat. Animal Welfare League Queensland is committed to animal care, whatever the cost. Morris first arrived in the Brisbane Rehoming Centre in early August in a terrible state. “Morris was brought into the shelter by a member of the public who believed, because of his condition, that Morris was feral,” Brisbane Rehoming Manager Leah Dent said. “He was extremely skinny, covered in sores and desperate for food.” He was also desperate for love. Staff immediately realised Morris wasn’t feral. Despite his terrible condition he was very social and smoochy, which was even more heartbreaking. The Rehoming Team also suspected that Morris had been wandering for quite a while. “When he came in he weighed only 2.5 kilograms,” Ms Dent said.
“He was given medication, antiseptic baths and put into foster care to gain some weight and clear his skin.” Morris soon settled in nicely with his new foster family and was starting to improve. Unfortunately he then came down with a severe case of cat flu. He stopped eating and drinking, and had difficulty breathing. Morris needed a lot of intensive care, but he remained sweet and affectionate no matter how bad he felt.
R
AFTE
As Morris recovered everyone was delighted in the change in his appearance. He quickly gained weight and his coat grew back. His personality also began to grow. He became even more affectionate, if that was possible! He filled out to a healthy 4.8 kilograms, nearly double his original weight. It was 79 days before Morris finally met his match. A lovely, kind man from Brisbane adopted Morris. We are forever grateful, and looking forward to bringing you all the latest on Morris and his new life in the next edition of Tawl Tails.
“Morris was so desperate for love that we could not help but do all we could for him.

AWLQ COMMUNITY VET CLINICS
n o s a e S Tick Warning Animal Welfare League Queensland vet Karishma Dahia is warning pet owners to check their animals for ticks.
Dr Dahia urged pet owners to check over their dogs and cats daily for ticks and said it was particularly important for people to use preventive treatments. “A lot of people think because their dog is mostly inside or because they live in suburbia that they’re not likely to be affected by ticks. “But living on the Gold Coast, it’s just notorious for paralysis ticks.
Ticks were on the march early this season with our Gold Coast “We see so many of them in and Ipswich vet clinics seeing 69 heaps of dogs and cats that live in cases since September. suburbia.” “It’s been a pretty nasty season so far,” she said. “We’ve definitely seen a lot of cases.”
Doctor Dahia said if a pet owner found a tick on their dog or cat they should rush the animal to the vet if they were confident they could arrive at a clinic within half an hour.
Otherwise, they should remove the tick themselves and keep the specimen so it could be identified later. Doctor Dahia said, depending on the size of the parasite and how deeply it was e ngorged, the pet might still need treatment by a vet later. “If they live close to a vet clinic, bring them in straight away then the vet can pull them off straight away,” she said.

the
‘Pupsicles’, Animal Welfare League Queensland’s recipe for dog safety this Summer Animal Welfare League Queensland (AWLQ) shelter vets are urging pet owners to be extra vigilant following the early start to summer. “Your dog and cat need access to clean, cool water and lots of it,” AWLQ Vet Doctor Theresia Andersen said. “Water pools are also great for dogs to lounge in and drop their temperature. “If you have overweight, older pets, long haired animals better suited to cooler climes, or dogs such as Bulldogs and Boxers which may have difficulty breathing, air conditioning is really important to help regulate their temperatures.” Never leave your dog in the car. Just minutes in a hot car, even with the windows down, is enough to do fatal damage to a dog in summer. “If a dog is heat affected try to give it cool water and move it to an airconditioned room.” “If that doesn’t work and your dog remains distressed, it’s vital that you get it to a vet as soon as possible,” Doctor Andersen said. Your vet will work to reduce its temperature and try to prevent its organs from shutting down. This can include the use of intravenous fluids, oxygen, medication and overnight care as the potential damage to your pet is assessed. Doctor Andersen recommends that owners…
Pupsicle Recipe
The Animal Welfare League Queensland shelter vet team has also developed its own recipe to keep dogs cool, called ‘Pupsicles’. “Vet Nurse Grace Nielsen has been honing this recipe for some time,” Doctor Andersen said. Ingredients 1/3 cup dry dog food couple of dog treats (biscuit treats) 1 tbsp. wet food water
• Never leave your pets in the car
Method fold in above ingredients and add water to a ‘mush’ consistency place in plastic bowl to half way and freeze once hard top up with water and refreeze remove frozen Pupsicle from plastic container into safe dog bowl
• Avoid prolonged use of Thundershirts during hot periods as they can trap heat causing your pet to overheat
Your Pupsicle is ready!
DON’T • Running, cycling or other strenuous activity with your dog during the hottest parts of the day
DO • Make sure your dogs and cats have access to shade and plenty of cool, clean water • Provide water pools for your dog to wade in • Ensure artic breeds and those with issues breathing normally have air-conditioning AWLQ Tawl Tails Spring Edition 2016 - Page 9
LATEST NEWS
Beenleigh
Rehoming Centre Renovation
thanks to
Beenleigh Rehoming Centre has a new ‘leash’ on life thanks to our friends at City of Gold Coast (Council). Over two months the reno team tackled the old kennel, replacing doors, removing old mesh, a couple of walls to open the space up and repainted the entire Rossmans Road facility at Stapylton. The floor was also replaced. The kennels are incredible and the dogs, mothers and their puppies, clearly like the new ‘old’ space that’s been created. Come on in and check it out for yourself and adopt a new dog, cat, puppy or kitten while you’re there!
e Cute Kids find a Hom Four cute kids stole the hearts of AWLQ rehoming staff in October when the stray siblings came under our care at Beenleigh Rehoming Centre. Just six weeks old, Poker, Marbles, Puzzle and Jenga were lapping up all the attention and even made it on the news. AWLQ Facebook went into meltdown when their photos were posted. Puzzle, one of the two males, had to have intensive medical treatment after a paralysis tick was found on the back of his neck. It was an opportunity for him to endear himself with the AWLQ Gold Coast Vet Clinic team. The kids were rehomed quickly after their television debut with the girls and boys each going to great homes.
Greyhound Ban Reversed The news wasn’t so great on the greyhound racing front. The New South Wales Government ban backdown was an opportunity lost. Animal Welfare League Queensland remains committed to seeing the cruel ‘sport’ end. We are also continuing to support these lovely, gentle dogs with our Going Grey program. If you would like to know more, head to awlqld.com.au.

LEAVE A LEGACY
Leave a Gift in your Will.
Story by Golden Hearts’ member, June McLeish.
We’d had dogs all our married lives, but after my husband passed away a few years ago, I felt I was too old to have another one. As the years rolled by, the silence in the house became deafening and I became more and more lonely and depressed
pet ownership. It gave me peace of mind to know that I had support in the significant step of having another companion dog in my life.
It was only after I heard on Radio 4CRB 89.3FM that Animal Welfare League Queensland was conducting shelter tours during Seniors’ Week, that I went with a friend just to get out of the house.
I can’t emphasise enough the joy Pinkie and the Golden Hearts program has given me, and the significant difference it is making to so many lives. Take the next step and enquire. Life, at all ages, is precious. Share it with a companion animal, and change both your lives.
Who would have thought that day would change my life? The tour was a heap of fun where we got to hold guinea pigs, and even rats, and enjoyed some scones and cream with a cup of tea. It was here that I learned about the Golden Hearts Seniors’ Pet Support Program run by AWLQ. This program was designed to assist people, just like me, with
As soon as I saw ‘him’ in the shelter he came up to me and it was love at first sight…my little Pinkie. I can’t believe how happy I am with my new little fur-ball and what a difference he is making in my life.

After discovering their Dachshund dog Hudson was suffering anxiety, they adopted a six month old long haired Black Dachshund named Dougal, earlier this year. In March 2016 Rod and Darren approached us about restoring our garden rotunda. The rotunda,

AustClean restored this piece to its former glory at a cost of $3,800. “There are so many reasons we love AWLQ, but if we had to sum it up the main reasons would be that in the time we have worked with the AWLQ staff and volunteers we have seen so much dedication and compassion for all the animals in your care. Background noise for us though, can be deafening for your dog or cat. “Dog and cat hearing is incredible sensitive,” Gold Coast Rehoming Manager Nicole Cannon said. “So it’s very important that you are aware of when there is excessive, or different noise, such as fireworks and that you respond appropriately. “You can actually make the situation worse if you try to excessively comfort your animal, as they are taking their cues from your behaviour – if you’re worried they are.” Ms Cannon says it’s also critical to ensure your animals are properly secured, in your home, during the festive season while you’re out. Christmas storms, parties and New Year’s Eve fireworks can all distress your pet which might try to flee from the noise, hurting itself in the process. “If you know that your pet is anxious, speak with your vet and a behaviourist ahead of time,” Ms Cannon said. “It’s also important to make sure that your dog and cat are microchipped, the information is up-to-date and that you have an I.D. tag on your pet. “If your dog or cat escapes and is found by someone they can immediately contact you, even on public holidays.” Page 16 - AWLQ Tawl Tails Summer Edition 2016

GOLDEN HEARTS Shelter Pets ‘Out and About’
Paws at the Park
Gold Coast dog owners converged on Central Park Oval in Varsity Lakes for the second Paws at the Park. Following the huge success of their last event, organisers moved the event to a bigger space and had over 60 stall holders all either animal friendly or selling animal products. AWLQ was the primary charity partner of the event so proceeds from the event were donated. We were on site microchipping local pets and promoting the message of responsible pet ownership
Secret Life of Pets This year ’s hit kid’s movie the Secret Life of Pets brought the idea of missing pets and shelter animals right to the front of mind for a lot of people. On the 28th of August, New Farm Cinema, Limelight Cinema Ipswich, Hoyt ’s Sunnybank, Yatala Drive In and Reading Cinemas all had advance screening Family Fun Days in support of AWLQ. One team from each of our rehoming centres attended the event with some of our friendliest shelter dogs.
