A Sailor’s Dying Wish by Jennie Haskamp
January 02, 2014
After signing my pop, EM2 Bud Cloud (circa Pearl Harbor) up for hospice care, the consolation prize I’d given him (for agreeing it was OK to die) was a trip to “visit the Navy in San Diego.” I emailed my friend and former Marine sergeant, Mrs. Mandy McCammon, who’s currently serving as a Navy Public Affairs Officer, at midnight on 28 May. I asked Mandy if she had enough pull on any of the bases in San Diego to get me access for the day so I could give Bud, who served on USS Dewey (DD-349) a windshield tour.
The next day she sent me an email from the current USS Dewey (DDG 105) inviting us down to the ship two days later. We linked up with Mandy outside Naval Base San Diego and carpooled to the pier where we were greeted by CMDCM Joe Grgetich and a squad-sized group of sailors. Bud started to cry before the doors of the van opened. He’d been oohing and pointing at the cyclic rate as we approached the pier, but when we slowed down and Mandy said, “They’re all here for you, Bud,” he was overwhelmed. After we were all out of the van directly in front of the Dewey, shaking hands and exchanging pleasantries, Petty Officer Simon introduced himself and said as the ship’s Sailor of the Year he had the honor of pushing Bud’s wheelchair for the day. Unbeknownst to us, they’d decided to host Bud aboard the Dewey, not at the Dewey.
And so they carried him aboard. None of us expected him to go aboard the ship. I’d told him we were going down to the base and would have the chance to meet and greet a few of the sailors from the new The Paper - 760.747.7119
Dewey. He was ecstatic. The day before, he asked every few hours if we were “still going down to visit the boys from the Dewey,” and “do they know I was on the Dewey, too?” Once aboard, we were greeted by the CO, CDR Jake Douglas, the XO and a reinforced pla-
toon-sized group of sailors. To say it was overwhelming is an understatement. These men and women waited in line to introduce themselves to Bud. They shook his hand, asked for photos with him, and swapped stories. It was simply amazing.
They didn’t just talk to him, they listened.
Bud’s voice was little more than a weak whisper at this point and he’d tell a story and then GMC Eisman or GSCS Whynot would repeat it so all of the Sailors on deck could hear. In the midst of the con-

Bud was telling a story and CMDCM Grgetich was repeating the details when Flores walked back into view holding a huge photo of the original USS Dewey. That moment was priceless. Bud stopped mid-sentence and yelled, “There she is!” They patiently stood there holding the photo while he told them about her armament, described the way it listed after it was hit, and shared other details about the attacks on Pearl Harbor . Bud finally admitted how tired he was after more than an hour on deck. While they were finishing up goodbyes and taking last minute photographs, GMC Eisman asked if it’d be OK to bring sailors up to visit Bud in a few months after a Chief’s board. I hadn’t said it yet because I didn’t want it to dampen the spirit of the day, but I quietly explained to GMC Eisman the reason we’d asked for the visit was simple: Bud was dying. I told him they were welcome to come up any time they want-
ed, but I suspected Bud had about a month left to live. Almost without hesitation, he asked if the crew could provide the burial honors when the time came. I assured him that’d be an honor we’d welcome. Leaving the ship was possibly more emotional than boarding. They piped him ashore. CMDCM Grgetich leaned in and quietly told me how significant that honor was and who it’s usually reserved for as we headed towards the gangplank. Hearing “Electrician’s Mate Second Class William Bud Cloud, Pearl Harbor Survivor, departing” announced over the 1MC was surreal. (photo below)
Later that night Bud sat in his recliner, hands full of ship’s coins and declared, “I don’t care what you do with my power tools; you better promise you’ll bury me with these.”
He died 13 days later. For 12 of those 13 days he talked about the Dewey, her sailors and his visit to San Diego . Everyone who came to the house had to hear the story, see the photos, hold the coins, read the plaques.
sure I missed a detail, or a name. What I didn’t miss and will never forget, is how unbelievable the men and women of the USS Dewey were. They opened their ship and their hearts and quite literally made a dream come true for a dying sailor.
True to his word, GMC Eisman arranged the details for a full honors burial. The ceremony was simple yet magnificent. And a perfect sendoff for an ornery old guy who never, ever stopped being proud to be a sailor. After the funeral, the sailors came back to the house for the reception and spent an hour with the family. This may seem like a small detail, but it’s another example of them going above and beyond the call of duty, and it meant more to the family than I can explain. There are more photos, and I’m
They provided the backdrop for “This is the best day of my life, daughter. I never in my whole life dreamed I’d step foot on the Dewey again or shake the hand of a real life sailor.” Without question, it’s the best example of Semper Fidelis I’ve ever seen. Jennie Haskamp USMC

While Mr. Gomez's article is so beautifully composed, I am somewhat puzzled and concerned about the hateful personal attack by a so-called Christian named "Brother Danny Saenz." I join you, Mr. Davis, in asking if such a racial and ethnic attack on Mr. Gomez's heritage is approved by Mr. Saenz' pastor? And if so, I further agree, that I would avoid Brother Danny Saenz' church like the plague. Many of my friends read this most hateful and personal assault on Mr. Gomez and it leads us to wonder what type of demons Brother Danny Saenz may be afflicted with? The rage and level of violent language he uses makes us concerned over his mental health. Perhaps his place of worship might suggest some spiritual counseling or psychiatric intervention for his own safety. Many churches provide sources to help combat alcohol abuse or illegal drug use.
God bless you, Mr. Frederick Gomez, for giving us such hope and rich blessings in the form of your precious article. And God bless you, Mr. Lyle E. Davis, editor of The Paper for printing it. Please forward this email to Mr. Gomez with an open invitation for him to join all of us for worship services. My family and I would be most honored to have him as our guest. /s/Dr. Michael T. In mid-2012, the City Council took action to present two ballot measures to the City’s voters on the November 6, 2012 municipal election ballot. The two ballot measures were later designated as Propositions N and P, respectively. Propostion N proposed various changes to the City’s General Plan. Proposition P proposed the adoption of a city charter. On October 17, 2012, Item 16A was added to the October 17, 2012 City Council meeting agenda. Item 16A consisted of a request by the City Manager for the appropriation of up to $20,000 for “Educational and Information Publications on Upcoming City Ballot Measures.” The accompanying staff report stated that the requested educational and information publications would be modeled on the material previously provided as a utility bill insert. The City believes there is a possibility that a court might agree that state law was violated in connection with the preparation and distribution of the mailer, and that it is in the best interests of the City to enter into a settlement agreement to resolve the lawsuit. Accordingly, the City has agreed to a settlement that acknowledges the possibility that contrary to the intent of the City Council, a court could ultimately determine that the mailer was campaign activity. They have agreed to adopt rules and guidelines for the purpose of preventing City funds from being used in the future to pay for activities that could constitute campaign activity, and under the settlement, the City will satisfy any necessary disclosure obligations under the Political Reform Act. Lyle, I thought I would share something with you that you would appreciate. I wrote the last article for the paper and it was during Christmas time which is a busy season for a pastor. I kinda pushed it out the door and really really regretted that I did not have more time to do a better job.
I am sure there are times when we all feel that way. I guess it is those times that God uses us in spite of us. Anyway, I received following call... (Listen to the voicemail attached to this email). Editor’s Note: We did listen to the audiotape of the voicemail and were equally impressed. The young man said he’d been a Christian all his life but over the past year he’d been having some difficulties. Jazz Concert to Showcase Metta Quintet Performing with Local Students – High school jazz band students to learn from and then play along with the acclaimed Metta Quintet. The California Center for the Arts, Escondido's first "Center Stage" performance of the New Year, will offer local high school music students the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform with a professional jazz quintet on stage in a 1,500-seat theater. The "Center Stage" program introduces students to live theater through weekday matinee performances that connect to a variety of curriculum areas-- history, literature, science and, of course, music and dance. Then at 10am on Tuesday, January 14, the “Center Stage” will feature a JazzReach presentation titled "Get Hip!" with Metta Quintet. All of JazzReach's artistic programming is carried out exclusively by the quintet, the organization's critically acclaimed resident ensemble. But
now, local teens are also going to get in on the act! Prior to the "Center Stage" performance, JazzReach will be conducting a three-day intensive with jazz band students from Escondido High School and Valley Center High School. Each school will work with Metta Quintet for two hours a day and then the music students will perform live with the group on January 14 in the Center's Concert Hall. This experience is being offered to the schools at no cost to the students. The students will be practicing with the quintet in the rehearsal studio at the Center campus in the afternoon and evening hours on Sunday and Monday, Jan. 12 and 13. In addition, while "Center Stage" performances are usually reserved for youth, tickets for this special show are being opened up to the students' parents and families as well as the general public. Tickets are available at the regular price of $4 per seat. To reserve seats, call the Center's Ticket Office at 800.988.4253, which is open from noon to 6pm, Tuesday through Saturday, and noon to 5pm, on Sunday. The two world wars saw tens of thousands of colonials taking up arms for the kings, queens and emperors who had subjugated them. Many colonials took up arms voluntarily, while thousands more were conscripted (drafted). Most of those who volunteered did so in the belief their military service would be rewarded with national independence. By the turn of the 20th century, much of Africa was colonized. Belgium, Germany, France, Holland, and, of course, Great Britain, had carved up the “dark continent,” as it was known. During World War I, some 83,000 Africans fought with the Allies, (Britain, Russia, France, Italy, United States, against Germany, AustriaHungary, and the Ottoman Empire (Turkey). Those are just the major players. A number of smaller nations fell in behind both sides.

"Right now," said Sven, after a moment's calculation, "there is myself, my cousin Knute, my next-door-neighbor Ole, and the whole Texas Holdem Team from Timberjacks
"Wow," said Sven, "I'll haf ta call ya back!"
Barack paused, "I must tell you Sven that I have one million men in my army waiting to move on my command."
Commonly known as “World Wars,” those bloody global conflicts of the 20th century were more about maintaining control of colonial territories staked out by the empires of Germany, Belgium, France, Great Britain and, of course, the United States, more so than any other reason. World War I amounted to a deadly squabble among socalled royal families and their colonies. Interestingly enough, the primary players were cousins -- (King George V of Britain, Czar Nicholas of Russia, and Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany), all grandsons of Britain’s long-reigning

Castro answered, “I didn’t, but all of a sudden, there he was, shaking my hand.”
Sure enough, the next day, Sven called again. "Mr. Obama, da war is still on! We have managed to acquire some infantry equipment!"
During World War II, we saw the end of colonial empires. Most of the colonies in the Far East held by France, Britain, and Holland, were given independence by the 1950s. Some

Much of the financial and military aid given to Great Britain by the U.S. before and during World War II, was done so with the understanding that after the war, it’s colonies would be given independence. In a private agreement between President Franklin Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Britain would give (albeit reluctantly) independence to her colonies around the world. Churchill had no choice. Without U.S. help in money, The editor of The Paper asked me to write a few words about a recent elk hunting trip I took with a friend to Wyoming. Both of these results would have threatened the freedom and democracy of the United States. Although few like to think of it, the United States had its own “colony” with control of the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico. Gained control by the U.S. as the “spoils” of war from the Spanish-American War (1898). The Philippines were given their independence on July 4, 1946. But, to maintain our Pacific foothold for defensive purposes, we have maintained our control of the islands of Guam in the Pacific and Puerto Rico in the Caribbean. A recent issue of Time Magazine covered the subject of wild animal control at great length. It stated that the populations of most wild, i.e. not domesticated, animals has exploded to the point that in many states they are out of control. Human beings and wild animals are at odds. Recently, a woman was mauled by a black bear in a suburban area in Florida. Coyotes roam city streets, stalking family pets, and are known to attack human beings. Raccoons are notorious for knocking over trash cans looking for food and often make residence in attics. The deer populations in most Eastern states, such as Michigan and Wisconsin, are so large that it is hazardous to drive the roads at night. In my own family, five out of seven members have been involved in deer collisions. In the area around Yellowstone Park, grizzly bear and wolf populations have become a crisis threatening livestock and residents.
For the hunter it is a sport, cause, comraderie, and the meat. All hunters are obligated to use the meat. It is never to be wonton waste. Hunting is an ancient practice where even the Bible speaks of it

As a hunter, and I have hunted and killed many wild animals, I am a part of, along with millions of others, a community that seeks to help balance the expansion of various species. Too many of even the best animals is not good for vegetation, breeding, spread of disease, and variety. Too few can lead to extinction and lack of enjoyment for the sightseer. Most Fish and Game Departments have a good idea of animal and bird populations and issue licenses, often by lottery, to hunters to help keep populations in check. I share that sentiment.

Genesis 10:8 records that Cush became the father of Nimrod – he was a mighty hunter before the Lord. "And what equipment would that be, Sven?" Barack asked.
"Vell sir, ve got two combines, a bulldozer, and Plante's farm tractor."
President Obama sighed. "I must tell you Sven, that I have 16,000 tanks and 14,000 armored personnel carriers. Also I've increased my army to one and a half million since we last spoke." "All right den,” said Sven. "I'll be getting back to ya." Sure enough, Sven rang again the next day... "President Obama, da war is still on! We have managed to git ourselves airborne! We up an' modified Ole's ultra-light vit a couple'a shotguns in da cockpit, and four boys from the American Legion haf joined us as vell!" Barack was silent for a minute then cleared his throat. "I must tell you, Sven, that I have 10,000 bombers and 20,000 fighter planes. My military complex is surrounded by laser-guided, surface-to-air missile sites. And since we last spoke, I've increased my army to TWO MILLION!" "Two million you say?" said Sven, "l'll haf' to call you back."
Sure enough, Sven called again the next day. "President Obama! I am sorry to have to tell you that we have had to call off this here war." "I'm sorry to hear that," said Barack. "Why the sudden change of heart?"
Vell, sir," said Sven, "we've all sat ourselves down and had a long chat over a few beers at the Top Notch cafe, in Cozad and come to realize that there's yust no vay ve can feed two million prisoners." Acting, at best, was adequate. Screenplay was just awful. Sean Penn had a cameo role . . . rugged face, read his lines well, but not award type stuff. Ben Stiller's directing was a farce, his acting wasn't much better, James Thurber would have crawled up out of his grave and shaken a mouldering finger in Stiller's direction and told him he should be ashamed of himself for butchering his classic tale.
I thought about getting up and walking out . . . it was that bad. But I had shelled out $24 for the three of us and, skinflint that I am, I decided to tough it out and suffer in silence. There was lots of silence. No laughter, an occasional giggle. As a comedy, it fell way short. Flat.
The movie started very slow . . and went downhill from there.
We sat through about 20 minutes of commercials and about 10 minutes of trailers (previews, for you old folks) before the movie started.
Wrong again.
Long lines inside the theatre to get into the auditorium showing the movie. I figured, with this much demand, it must be good.
Big mistake.
We arrived at the Regal Theatre . . . Anchorman II was sold out, so I got tickets for Walter Mitty.
My preference would have been Grudge Match, Anchorman, and Mitty, in that order. I knew evelyn would not care for Grudge Match so it came down to Anchorman or Mitty. We all agreed on Anchorman II.
Three choices, I said . . . "Anchorman II," starts at 3.50, "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," starts at 4:25, or "Grudge Match," which starts at 4:20. It was 3pm and we were just finishing a late lunch/early dinner.
It was Christmas Day so rather than sit home on watch boring tv I decided to treat Evelyn and my cousin, Doug Leverenz, to a movie.
Worst movie I’ve seen in over 30 - maybe 40 years. Maybe ever.
That’s the shorthand review.
Tigger is the pet of the week at your Rancho Coastal Humane Society. He’s a 3-1/2 year old, 12 pound, neutered, male Tabby with a medium length, buff colored coat. Tig has golden eyes, long white whiskers, and a polite disposition. He’s very social with both people and other cats. When he wants attention he asks for it with a gentle “meow.”
The $100 adoption fee for Tigger includes up to date vaccines, veterinary exam, neuter, and microchip. If you can't adopt now, consider sponsoring a pet until it’s adopted. Meet your new cat, dog, or rabbit at Rancho Coastal Humane Society, 389 Requeza Street in Encinitas. Adoption hours are 11 to 5 Wednesday through Monday. For more information call 760-753-6413.
In a thumbnail sketch of the original plot . . . Walter Mitty was a guy who 'zoned out' and lived in his own little make believe world and had adventure after adventure, all of which were imaginary. The movie turned the premise inside out and upside down and made all the adventures appear to be real . . . and all within 2 or 3 days, with global journeys all over the world. Physically impossible. I can suspend some belief when watching a flick but . . . Absolutely terrible. Again, a summary review:
Lancelot is an 8-year-old neutered male shorthair mix, ID 74909. Lancelot is friendly and affectionate. If your hand is within his reach, somehow his head will find it and climb under if for some petting. Even though he is playful and enjoys the interactive toys, he is a lover boy and not shy about showing his affection. He is gentle, so he would be suitable in a home with small children or just adults. Lancelot is available for adoption from the Escondido Humane Society and is one of the featured cats at the Escondido PetSmart, 415 N. They brought money owed for the repairs to the agreed upon location and while waiting in their car a man entered the vehicle and gave them driving instructions to the intersection of Spanish Oak Avenue and Brook Road, about six blocks away, deputies said. Once they arrived at the location the man told them to stop the car, showed them a handgun, and left. The man then got into a parked car where a driver was waiting. The couple followed the car to the intersection of Rock Springs and Nordahl roads and attempted to stop the driver and passenger by ramming the vehicle with their own.

Vista • Mayor Judy Ritter On behalf of the City Council and myself, I wish you and your family a happy, healthy and successful 2014. This past year has been a whirlwind as we celebrated our 50th anniversary year with many activities and events. I look back with pride on this year. Together we accomplished a lot. We reduced the city’s structural deficit, leveraged state and federal grant funds to stretch your hard earned tax dollars, made our city safer through community policing, and improved our roads - making them easier and safer to Have a Good Year!
drive on. We are a step closer to our long term vision of revitalizing S. Santa Fe Avenue with the start of construction on the Paseo Pointe mixed-use project which began in December. I hope this New Year brings renewed continued prosperity to our country, state and especially to our city. As we begin 2014 and I embark on my fourth year as Mayor of Vista, I look forward to the exciting challenges the year ahead will bring. Thank you to our residents, businesses, and visitors for being part of the Vista community. It is because of you that we have such a unique place to live, work and play. Happy New Year!

Finally, out of the crowd stepped a little, old Jewish man. "Mr. Policeman," said the man, "I'm not a priest. I'm not even a Christian. But, for 50 years now, I'm living behind the Catholic Church on Second Avenue , and, every night, I'm overhearing their services. I can recall a lot of it, and maybe I can be of some comfort to this poor man."

On Christmas Eve a woman was walking in the middle of Lake Wohlford Road when she was struck by a vehicle and killed, the California Highway Patrol said. CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt said they received a call on the 911 line a few minutes before the accident, reporting a woman walking in the road.

“Because they will always break your heart,” he said softly.
The two men turned around and stared at him. “Why not?” asked the first man.
Cactus Jack, Frequent visitor of The Computer Factory www.computerfactorysanmarcos.com San Diego stands alone among America’s ten largest cities in having never won a national championship in any major sport (baseball, basketball and football) at either the professional or collegiate level. Certainly our pros have come close with losses in the Super Bowl and World Series but somehow we always fall short. Nome and I found the answer one cold rainy night two years ago at a tavern in Julian. Don’t Bet the Rent Money on the Chargers
“Yes,” said the dark man, “and it’s not just the Chargers, the Padres, USD, UCSD and San Diego State, they will all break your heart. It cannot be changed, it is the curse.” He continued toward the door.
“The Chargers will break my heart?” sneered the second man.
scholarship but the coach never played the lad. In the boy’s senior year Mountain Bear complained to the University President who pressured the baseball coach into promising to play Mountain Bear’s son in the final game of the season.”
The first man yelled after him “That’s bull crap man, there is no such thing as a curse.” “What’s he talking about?” asked the first man looking at Amanda, the bartender.
“You think not?” he said sadly, “Wait and see.” and he stepped out into the night. Amanda sighed heavily, “It’s a sad story and a bit spooky. Are you sure you want to hear it?” The first man nodded and Nome and I moved up to the bar. The other couple in the tavern left their table and took seats at the bar. We all sat in the dim light waiting as Amanda began. “In 1929 San Diego State was negotiating to buy land on Montezuma Mesa for their new campus. An Indian clan living on Vulcan Mountain owned the property that SDSU wanted for their athletic fields. The Indians agreed to sell the property with the stipulation that the school would supply basketball, baseball and football equipment for the clan’s reservation school and offer an athletic scholarship for a student of the clan’s choosing. In 1931 tribal elder Mountain Bear’s son received that fouryear scholarship as a baseball pitcher. “As the years passed the school honored the
“The big day arrived and the entire Vulcan Mountain clan came to the playing fields on Montezuma Mesa to see Mountain Bear’s son pitch for the Aztecs. It was a tight game with the conference championship at stake, the tension grew among the clan members as Mountain Bear’s son continued to sit on the bench. In the bottom of the eighth inning, with the score tied at one all, Coach sent Mountain Bear’s son to warm up in the bull-pen along with his ace reliever, Wally Mc Comb.” “The excitement grew as Coach signaled the bullpen for a ninth inning relief pitcher. But it was McComb who walked to the mound. He was tagged for a two-out solo home run and the Aztecs failed to score in the bottom of the ninth. Game over. Mountain Bear’s son was nowhere to be found on the field after the game. When the team went back to the locker room they found Mountain Bear’s son’s lifeless body hanging in the showers.” At that moment there was a flash of lightning followed immediately by a crash of thunder that shook the building. The lights in the bar dimmed and then brightened. The room suddenly seemed to grow cold. Amanda shivered. “The clan took Mountain Bear’s son home to Vulcan Mountain that night and buried
him in sacred ground. At the end of three days of mourning they built a huge fire and burned all the athletic equipment the university had provided. As thick smoke rolled down the mountain and spread out toward San Diego the tribal shaman stood with Mountain Bear at the top of Vulcan Mountain. Mountain Bear spoke this curse. “San Diego’s teams will never win a championship game.” The second man said, “That would mean that we could never win a World Series or Super Bowl and that none of our universities could ever win a national championship” Amanda nodded, “That is true’ at least in football, basketball and baseball.” “So who was that guy?” asked the first man. “He is the great-great-great grandson of Mountain Bear.” Said Amanda “You can’t really believe in that curse crap Amanda?” snorted the first man.
The cold wind blew curtains of rain down Julian’s dark, empty streets. Inside, Bailey’s Barbecue and Tavern was warm and filled with the savory aromas of wood smoke and roasting meat. After dinner we sat nursing our after dinner drinks idly listening to two men at the bar loudly lamenting the Padre’s dismal season but enthusing over the Chargers chances to make the play-offs.
Amanda leaned forward “Well, you explain it. None of our teams have ever won any of those championships, the Padre’s have the worst all time won/lost record of any team in the majors.,” said Amanda. “Besides, it doesn’t matter what I think, he believes it and he puts his money where his mouth is.” “Sure does,” said Amanda, “did you notice the red car parked out front when you came in?” “He bets against our teams?” Asked the second man incredulously.
“What happened then?” asked the first man nervously.
The second man’s jaw dropped. “That was his Ferrari?”
A dark, well dressed man sat alone at the bar apparently listening to the conversation. He paid his bar tab and, on the way out, stopped behind the two men, “never bet the rent money on the Chargers.”

2011 to replace Suzanne Pohlman, who had been director of the organization for 29 years.
Both groups in the proposed merger thought the merger would cut costs and create one of the largest nonprofits in the county. Upon analysis, however, the savings were not sufficient to merit going forward, in the opinion of the two boards of directors. When that decision was made, Batt opted to retire.
Jones, who served as Interfaith’s interim CEO for about two weeks before Batt’s arrival, said he has not thought about whether to seek the job permanently. Jones has worked for Interfaith for 16 years, with about half of those as associate director. Jones said Batt’s departure was a mutual decision between the two sides.
That vision of a combined agency with a $15 million budget, 210 employees and expanded services for the poor, veterans and others in need never materialized.
Coker said there is no official final day for Batt, who will work with Jones during the transition after his return from vacation. Pastor Richard Huls, Retired These words radiate optimism and confidence.
We enter the new year with our past life. Thus, we take all of our unfinished business, unresolved conflicts with others, guilt of our misdeeds, unpaid bills, weaknesses of body, mind, and spirit, unfulfilled good intentions, and a plethora of other things into our new year. Needless to say, any one of these issues could dampen our hope for a happy new year. Yet, we wish such a happy greeting on many. Is such a year possible? The Jesus of the Bible says, “YES”. I share a few of his suggestions with you taking some liberty of exposition. Live one day at a time making the most of your opportunities and doing your best. Stop worrying about things you can’t control. Trust the providence of God’s benevolence. It pleases Him when you let Him provide you with love, kindness, and goodness. Live a life of simplicity. Don’t try to grab more than you can handle. Be content with what you are and have. Don’t expect more than you are willing to give. Love God, others, and yourself. Forgive – no one nor anything is perfect. Treasure the moment – it is all you have. Yesterday is a memory – tomorrow may never come. These simple rules practiced could make your year a HAPPY NEW YEAR.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We all hope that the year 2014 will be a happy one. What are the ingredients for a happy year? It would be that everything is good and in order and things just fall into place. Some would say that it is being at the right place at the right time. This is when one wakes up in the morning and knows all is well with the world. The Jews have a word, SHALOM, that describes such an experience. It is when everything is in order. We can pray that the entire year could be that way. Perhaps this would be the closest experience we could have to heaven. But alas, our human experience tells us that life isn’t always or ever

The Doctor is In!
Gum Disease is an infection by germs in the gums around your teeth. It is one of the most common infections in people thoughout the world. In its more serious form - known as "periodontitis" the infection is long lasting. The soft gums and bone around the teeth dissolve over time. This can lead to the loss of teeth. One-half of the U.S. Population 30 years and older has periodontitis, as do 60% of those over 60.

than those without diabetes. Now, scientists are finding that the gum disease raises blood sugar levels in people both with, and without diabetes. At a recent meeting of the top dental and diabetes researchers from around the world, scientists looked closely at the latest research into how gum disease affects humans. They found that, compared with those having healthy gums, people with periodontal disease: 1. have higher long-term blood sugar levels 2. have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes 3. have a higher risk of developing pregnancy diabetes 4.have a harder time controlling their type 2 diabetes 5. are at a higher risk of experiencing harm to eyes and kidneys, as well as heart attack and stroke. How does gum disease make blood sugar levels go up? Scientists think that the germs that infect gums leak into the blood stream after normal activities like chewing or toothbrushing. This starts a reaction from your body's defense system, which, in turn, produces some powerful molecules that have harmful effects all over your body. Part of this is raising your blood sugar levels.

The good news is that in people with type 2 diabetes, treatment of periodontitis (for example, deep cleaning and scaling, laser decontamination, etc.) can lead to a drop in their blood sugar levels.
