Can a human being really die from not having any sleep? Or, from not being able to dream at night? Scientists from around the world are studying these fascinating questions, and their amazing answers just may shock you out of your socks! The The Paper Paper -- 760.747.7119 760.747.7119

TOTAL SLEEP DEPRIVATION CAN KILL ANIMALS. Scientists know that no sleep can kill animals. Rats, for example, will die from total lack of sleep between 11 and 32 days. Larger animals, such as dogs, will die after 9 to 17 days without any sleep. (Note: it is critically important to clarify “total non-sleep” from the casual non-scientific condition of
“virtually no sleep at all.”)
CAN A HUMAN BEING DIE FROM LACK OF SLEEP? International studies from “sleep scientists” have clearly shown, without question, that “yes” human beings can and have, already, died from (total) sleep deprivation. A very rare sleep disorder, medically classified as
“Fatal Familial Insomnia” has already proved this, beyond any doubt. This rare genetic sleep disorder – so far, has no known cure and (as the “fatal” portion of its clinical name implies) always leads to eventual death with the patient. As the foremost medical specialists state: “There is currently no cure for fatal familial insomnia (FFI) or treatment

that can slow the disease progression.” This terminal malady is extremely rare and is caused by a specific disease in the human brain which prevents sleep.
Fatal familial insomnia is called a rare “prion disease” in the brain which causes complete lack of sleep which, in turn, causes damage to the part of the brain known as the thalamus. The spinal cord is impacted with “the disruption of critical functions.” In short, the sleepless disease hits the human nervous system and impairs essential brain functions. The FFI gene which prevents sleep is called the PRNP gene and it eventually “eats” holes in the brain, giving it a “sponge-like appearance.” This “sleepless” disorder causes the human body to trigger all these fatal reactions.
As experts are quick to point out, even without this specific fatal familial insomnia disease, any extreme cases of prolonged sleep deprivation can cause: “Eventual damage to the heart, lungs, metabolism, kidneys, and brain function. Any intense sleep deprivation may trigger diabetes, heart disease, and even certain forms of cancer.” (This is discussed in greater detail later in this article.)
Though no human being has been known to die from “forced” or “intentional wakefulness,” all experts agree that, “Complete inability to sleep will

HOW LONG CAN A PERSON SURVIVE WITHOUT SLEEP? The above mentioned disease called fatal familial insomnia occurs in 4 stages and can last between 7 and 36 months before death. However, not all four stages are truly without complete sleep. It is during the 4th and final stage that dementia (or senility) sets-in and the patient becomes unresponsive or mute, and death follows. Actual length of time preceding death when the patient cannot succumb to sleep is uncertain since even patients afflicted with this disease still have “slivers of time when they slip in-and-out of a type of twilight sleep,” say researchers. However, stage 4 eventually makes sleep totally impossible (even without any “twilight” or “slivers” of sleep-time, mentioned above). For the average person, (total and complete) sleep deprivation (which has been confirmed by reliable and scientificallymonitored conditions) can last – on average – up to (but not limited to) 32 days before death occurs. The average survival time for patients diagnosed with fatal familial insomnia (FFI) (including all 4 stages) is 18 months. Note: If only one parent has the FFI gene, the offspring have a 50% risk of inheriting and developing the disease.
CLAIMS OF PEOPLE NOT SLEEPING FOR YEARS DEBUNKED. Newspapers periodi-
cally print sensationalized claims of people stating that they have not slept in years. Such ridiculous claims have been a “gullible carrot” for the very naïve to diet on and believe. However, these outlandish claims of people not sleeping for years have never been scientific verified and, therefore, are not given “sober consideration” by the legitimate scientific community (who find such tales to be amusing, at best).
AL HERPIN, THE MAN WHO NEVER SLEPT. One amusing example that sold many newspapers was the story of a Mr. Al Herpin of Trenton, New Jersey, who became known as “The Man Who Never Slept.” On February 29, 1904, the New York Times reported that Herpin had not slept a wink in over 10 years! Discrepancies in the story began to occur under scrutiny and Al Herpin admitted that he took “rest periods,” but never dozed off. Later, these accounts of “rest periods” later translated to short naps. Further inconsistencies surfaced when the mysterious recluse died on January 3, 1947 when his age at death was given as 94. As reported in the same New York Times at the time of Herpin’s death: “This is inconsistent with the previous assertion that he was born in 1862.” Simple math shows that if he died at age 94 his death wouldn’t come until the year 1956. Other discrepancies regarding his claim of not sleeping a wink in years also have discredited him. VIETNAMESE MAN SAYS HE HASN’T SLEPT IN 47 YEARS. Aside from the fanciful tales of Al

The farmer asked, "What in the world ya'll gonna do with a dead mule?" Curtis said, "We gonna raffle him off."
The farmer said, "You can't raffle off a dead mule!"
Leroy said, "We shore can! Heck, we don't hafta tell nobody he's dead!" A couple of weeks later, the farmer ran into Curtis & Leroy at the Piggly Wiggly grocery store and asked.

December 8 - 6:00 PM It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses Print. So romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow!
December 9 We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there be a more lovely place in the whole world? Moving here was the best idea I've ever had! Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the
Herpin “The Man Who Never Slept,” there have been countless other hoaxes, such as Thai Ngoc, the legendary Vietnamese man who claimed to have stayed awake for an astounding 47 years! (Move over Rip Van Winkle, this man renders you a mere cat-napper.) Though widely reported by the Vietnamese news organizations, the storyline was amusingly picked up by various American newspapers as “fluff” pieces and “humorous slices” at best, and not intended to be taken seriously by its readership.
In the case of Thai Ngoc, medical specialists and dream research scientists who are familiar with the case, remain skeptical while claiming that, “Ngoc is actually sleeping, he just doesn’t know it.” In addition, San Diego County’s own worldrenowned medical specialist, Dr. Ashish K. Wadhwa of Poway, California, states: “Some insomniacs can’t tell the difference between sleeping and being awake and engage in very brief ‘micro-naps’ throughout the day.” The world-respected Dr. Wadhwa, who has no less than 5 hospital affiliations, including 3 in North San Diego County (Pomerado Hospital in Poway, Tri-City Medical Center at Oceanside, and Palomar Medical Center in our own Escondido area) suspects in the case of Thai Ngoc: “The subject may feel that they are merely resting when in actuality they are sleeping.” Dr. Wadhwa further explains, “They may also be having micro-naps – very short naps lasting minutes.” (Dr.

sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life!
December 12 The sun has melted all our lovely snow.. Such a disappointment! My neighbor tells me not to worry- we'll definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again. I don't think that's possible. Bob is such a nice man, I'm glad he's our neighbor. December 14 Snow, lovely snow! 8 inches last night. The temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplough came back this afternoon and buried everything again. I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way. I wish I wouldn't huff and puff so. December 15 20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer. Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska , after all. December 16 Ice storm this morning. Fell on my ass on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel.

Thai Ngoc’s celebrity in his Vietnamese culture was widely reported by the world media as only a ‘curiosity piece,’ in the same manner that National Geographic recognizes and reports a primitive culture’s belief-system, religious ceremonies, or cultural heroes. However, today’s global internet (outside the scientific community) continues to perpetuate and give ‘new life’ to these unverified, mythical claims of Thai Ngoc, Vietnam’s legendary man who had no shuteye for nearly a half century!
There are numerous other examples, such as “The Russian Sleep Experiment” of the 1940s, and the Frenchman who “virtually” did not sleep for several months. (“Virtually” is defined as “almost” or “nearly.”) Therefore, the Frenchman “almost never slept” within those several months. All of which places these, and many other, examples into the non-scientific “hoax category.”
Nevertheless, these stories prove irresistible fodder for the unsophisticated mind and, consequently, such tales continue to find new life-blood in the current pop culture, via the ever-popular internet.

SAN DIEGAN MAKES WORLD HEADLINES. San Diego’s own Randy Gardner made world news when he was only 16 years old. In 1965, Randy Gardner was a Point Loma High School student when he set a then-world record of staying awake for 264.4 hours (11 days, 25 minutes). Gardner never officially made it into the Guinness Book of World Records because as he stated: “I did not get listed in Guinness Book of World Records as I missed the publication deadline.” Nevertheless, the San Diego resident still is a title holder in some respects, since other alleged record holders such as Toimi Soini of Hamina, Finland and Maureen Weston of England (both previously mentioned) did not matchup with Gardner’s level of “official scientific verification.” Unlike others who have since claimed the crown for staying awake longer, Randy Gardner’s record-setting event back in 1965 was scrutinized by higher scientific rigors put into place by the world’s foremost authority on sleep: Dr. William C. Dement of Stanford University. Dr. Dement, personally, monitored and had the most robust guidelines for 16-year-old San Diegan, Randy Gardner. Other socalled title-holders of sleep deprivation never came close to meeting the standards of the legendary American sleep researcher, William Charles Dement – known as the ‘Father of Sleep Medicine’ and founder of the Sleep Research Center. Other recordholders would, conceivably, fail Dr. Dement’s higher standards of confir-

Escondido Public Library Hosts “Create It @ Your Library” for Teens – The Escondido Public Library announces the next series of the craft-based monthly program, Create It @ Your Library, for teens and tweens ages 12 to 18 years old. Create It @ Your Library will take place in February, March, and April, on the third Wednesday of each month from 3:30pm to 5:30pm, in the Turrentine Room. The first meeting will be on February 21st. A variety of craft projects and techniques will be introduced at the following hands-on sessions: Voodoo Doll on February 21; learn some basic sewing skills by making your own pincushion voodoo doll. On March 21, Rube Goldberg Machine; create a com-
mation. Unlike other alleged nonsleep title holders, San Diego teenager, Randy Gardner, did not employ any stimulants of any kind to keep him awake. Gardner did not even drink coffee!
But far more importantly, even trained medical personnel in sleep research often turn to the world’s foremost authority, Dr. Dement, for updated guidelines. For example, many so-called ‘non-sleep record holders’ were never verified by the world’s highest standards as they should have been. Says Dr. Dement: “The overall problem with determining the record for staying awake longer is what is scientifically referred to as ‘twilight sleep’ or ‘micro-sleep’ – when the subject is actually getting short ‘bursts’ of actual sleep which is not noticed by either the subject or the researchers monitoring the event.” In essence, the subjects are occasionally lapsing into “slivers of sleep,” even though it may not seem that way. As experts admonish, “To really determine if a person has been constantly awake you need to record their brainwaves throughout the experiment.”
Many people who have claimed the crown for staying awake longer, such as Tony Wright on May 25, 2007, merely used a 24-hour video camera for documentation. Such feeble and unscientific guidelines (24-hour video camera on the subject) are not granted serious consideration.

was the case with New York radio disc jockey, Peter Tripp, who attempted to stay awake as a promotional stunt in 1959. Working nonstop on the radio to benefit the March of Dimes, Tripp sat in a glass booth in Times Square, broadcasting for WMGM in New York City. He spent 201 sleepless hours (and 10 minutes) playing records and talking ‘live’ on the microphone three hours of the day. After a while he began to hallucinate, which is a common symptom of sleep-deprivation subjects. After three days, Tripp began laughing hysterically for no reason, sometimes becoming upset, confused, and deeply paranoid. After the stunt had officially ended, Peter Tripp clinically became psychotic. Later he would frantically search through his radio office drawers looking for non-existent money. He accused one radio technician of trying to do him bodily harm. He eventually claimed he was not Peter Tripp, the New York radio personality, but, an imposter! Nothing made sense to him afterward. Sadly, there were permanent damages that set in after his nonsleep marathon. Depression set in, he fought viciously with his boss, became involved with the Payola scandal and was finally fired from his job. His family often stated that the 8-day non-sleep promotion left Peter Tripp permanently damaged. The once-popular New York disc jockey passed away in California on January 31, 2000. He death came at age 73, following a stroke, leaving two sons and two daughters. His 4 marriages all crashed in divorce.

June in Iowa tends to be a series of long hot, humid days. Great weather for growing crops . . . working the fields, and raising livestock . . . including. . . pigs.
Raising pigs can be profitable but it requires a lot of hard work . . . and the ability to stand up to the rather fragrant aroma of . . . a pig farm.
In 1923 two hard working pig farmers, Arthur and Hattie Hurt, renting a 120 acre pig farm, had such a hot June day to contend with when, while working in the fields, Hattie felt the onset of labor pains A short time later, Oscar A. Hurt was born. A healthy, robust child who quickly learned from his parents the value and need for hard, hard work and the ability to finish a job properly.
Such were the requirements of the times that Oscar (who folks quickly turned to calling “Ozzie”) began driving a tractor at age 10. You grew up quickly in the farm community. You had to if you were going to survive.
Ozzie began workiing in the fields at age 14, often doing the work a fully grown man would do. In the process, he developed a lean, muscular body. Neighbors began to notice this young lad who had a talent for organization and getting things done, in addition to working as hard or harder than any other adult.

The preliminary investigation suggests that the driver of the vehicle was proceeding Eastbound on Carlsbad Village Drive at a high rate of speed, ran the red light at College Blvd and struck the guard rail at the intersection of Carlsbad Village Drive and Peninsula a short distance later. engine aircraft, B25’s initially, B29’s later. He was on his way to a successful air force career!
He and his family would, over the years, move from air base to air base, usually to either attend a new school for training, or to accept a promotion and new assignment. He moved through the ranks quite well as he was both a good student as well as a “go-to” guy when it came to getting things done and assuming a leadership role wherever he went.
he was recognized for it by the higher ups.
Ultimately, he was promoted to Brigadier General. A pretty good move from the humble beginnings of a pig farm in Iowa. Along the line he married, had a son, Greg, two daughters, Debbie and Judy. He had gone to work for United Airlines and became the first General to ever fly for United.
On June 12, 2005, Ozzie’s son, Greg, a brilliant dentist located in San Marcos, California, gave Ozzie a special 82nd birthday gift. He sent Ozzie skydiving. He had the time of his life and remembered the experience with great joy. Brigadier General Oscar “Ozzie” Hurt passed away recently at age 94. His son, Greg, and other family members gathered at March Air Force Base where Ozzie was given full military honors.
In August of 1941 Ozzie graduated from high school and headed off to study aeronautical engineering. In December of that year war broke out and Ozzie returned to the farm to wind up managing some 560 acres.
During the war years several area farmers asked Ozzie to manage their farms for them while they went off to become warriors. When they returned, their farms were as good or better than when they left.

He flew B-25’s, the C-46, the B47, the C-119 and C-130. Later, with the airlines he would fly “the Connie,” and, still later, the Boeing 747.
Following his Air Force career, Ozzie became an active member of both the Air Force Reserve and the Air National Guard. As he moved up to higher andhigher command positions he took a close look at the personnel, the inventory, the philosphy and the policies of various departments and wings. He oganized and reorganized the units into more effective operational status and
We remember, with great pleasure, another outing we had shared with Ozzie. Several years ago we attended a Wings of Freedom Tour at Palomar Airport where there was a B25 and a B17 on display, and giving passenger rides. There was also a P51 - one of the sleekest, most powerful fighter planes that came out of WWII.
We arranged for Ozzie to inspecct the P51 up close and personal, and to meet the pilot. Ozzie and the pilot must have spent two hours “hangar flying,” exchanging war stories of every description. For those two hours those two pilots were back in their element . . . talking about “the good old days,” sharing experiences and recalling mutual friends. Ozzie had over 30,000 hours in the air - and great memories.

RISK OF PERMANENT DAMAGE. Extreme lack of sleep, whether intentional or not, can medically damage the human body, permanently. Not getting enough sleep over a period of time can trigger serious medical conditions by lowering your immune system and creating a greater chance of bacterial diseases, as well as a greater risk for heart disease, and high blood pressure. Neglecting your normal hours of sleep – even without going for a world record – can seriously endanger the average person. Long periods without normal, adequate sleep can make your body release higher levels of insulin after you eat. Insulin controls your blood sugar level. Higher insulin levels promote fat storage and increases your risk for Type 2 diabetes! Prolong sleep deprivation also causes the body to increase ‘cortisol’ (a stress hormone) -- which, in turn, can lead to a deadly heart attack or even a life-long paralyzing stroke! GUINNESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS STOPS LIST. Because of the possible danger of medical ‘after-effects’ from people who attempt to stay awake to set world records, the Guinness Book of World Records no longer recognizes this “category of sleep deprivation.” Previous record-holder, Toimi Soini of Finland, who allegedly stayed totally awake for 11 ½ consecutive days (276 hours) – was removed from the Guinness Book of Records in 1989, for the following reasons: “It was deleted on the grounds that it could encourage records harmful to
health and was unverifiable because of the claims of insomnia sufferers.” (Toimi Soini was listed as having set the sleep deprivation record in February of 1964.)
ARE DREAMS NECESSARY? At one time, dreams were thought to be nonsensical and completely unimportant to our survival. Today that view has been greatly changed! While sleep, itself, is important to our survival, so the same came be said of dreams! Dreams are necessary for the human brain not to shut down at night when we are dead asleep! During the day, our brain is constantly stimulated, and constantly processing everything we see, touch, smell, taste, or even just think about. Also, everything we feel inside of ourselves, all our emotions, like our fears, our happiness, our anger, our laughing, well, every possible human experience – is all processed, filtered, and interpreted by the human brain. The human brain is the most complicated of all computers! It allows us to not only touch, see, feel, experience, but, it gives orders for our muscles to move, reach, run, jump or sit down. However, unlike your laptop or desk computer terminal, you cannot turn the switch “off” to your brain when you’re done working or sleeping – if you did, you would die! No electrical brain waves, no EEG activity, and you flat line – you’re officially pronounced dead! So, how do dreams keep our brains from shutting off at night when we are sleep? When we are sleeping and our eyes, ears, and other senses have no pictures, sound,
scenery or people to process, the brain’s activity-level plunges to a dangerous low.
Today’s smart science is striving to keep up with the revolutionary advances into how dreams keep our physical brain from shutting down at night when it “has nothing to do.”
Obviously, the brain stays active during sleep, but, nowhere near the same level as when a person is awake. Therefore, the brain (must) be kept ‘entertained’ and ‘fully-engaged’ on a higher frequency level -- or it may ‘turn off.’ This is where dreams come into play.
Dreams are the brain’s own survival tactics to stay alive, to stay ‘turned on.’ When we are sleeping, the brain has to (must) stay active, stay alert, stay ‘turned on’ – so it protects itself from shutting down by occasionally replaying images, pictures, memories, people, everything we experience in our waking life in the form of dreams. So say the world’s leading authorities on dreams and the human brain, such as world-renowned neuroscientist, Mark Solms, best known for his discovery of the forebrain mechanisms of dreaming and, reputedly, the first person to term the phrase “neuropsychoanalysis.” According to Dr. Solms, dreams keep the brain occupied: “Dreaming does for the brain what Saturday morning cartoons do for the kids. Dreams keep the brain occupied and entertained, while the ‘outside’ world is shut down during sleep.” The human brain must continually multi-task,
working with the heart, nervous system, etc. As Dr. Solms explains, “So, when we are unconscious (sleeping), the brain manufactures and creates ‘mental pictures and sounds’ during dreaming so that it (the brain) can remain fully active and remain stimulated and ‘entertained’ while in a dormant state. In a sense, the brain goes into a ‘survival mode.’”
DOES EVERYONE DREAM? We often hear people say “I never dream,” or “I hardly ever dream.” The truth of the matter is that everybody dreams every night, without exception. The reason many of us insist that we never, or hardly ever, dream is because many of us don’t remember them! As research scientists put it: “Since dreams occur in the subconscious level of our minds, they sometimes ‘evaporate’ before they are picked up by our (conscious level) memory when we awake.” Some of us, however, recall our dreams quite vividly. Regardless, everyone dreams, multiple times, every night.
The human subconscious, where all dreams take place, is a reservoir of almost everything we have learned or experienced in life. Under hypnosis, older people can often remember, with perfect clarity, events from 50 years before! A person’s unconscious memory is almost perfect! Many scientists believe that the subconscious is one million times more powerful a processor than our conscious mind! It is estimated today that the subcon-

scious part of our mind accounts for up to 60% or more of our brain capabilities! The function of the subconscious mind is to store and retrieve data.
HOW LONG DO DREAMS LAST? Another very popular myth is that all dreams only last a few seconds. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the average person may dream a total of one to two hours per night! And our individual dream episodes may last anywhere from a few fleeting seconds to 45 minutes or longer!
DREAMS OFTEN SOLVE PROBLEMS One of the more fascinating aspects of dreams is that the brain sometimes continues to work through complicated problems and ‘projects’ while in the state of dreaming. Famous Beatles singer/songwriter, Paul McCartney, first heard his hit song “Yesterday” (1965) in a dream episode! The dream experience stunned McCartney who said, “I liked the melody a lot, but because I dreamed it, I couldn’t believe I’d written it. I thought (No, I’ve never written anything like this before!) But, I had the tune, which was the most magic thing!” German-born scientist, Otto Loewi (1873-1961) had a dream that led him to a scientific solution resulting in Loewi winning the 1936 Nobel Prize for medicine! A major breakthrough solved during a dream cycle!
America’s first patented sewing machine (1846) by inventor, Elias Howe, came about through a dream! Howe dreamed that he was being attacked by Indians and they were shooting their arrows through cloth wigwams, snagging threads and drawing the threads through with the tips of their arrows! Howe awoke from his dream and ran to his workshop where he created and patented the world’s first lock-stitch sewing machine!
Golfing immortal, Jack Nicklaus, credits a dream with solving a slump he suffered in his play. The year was 1964 and Nicklaus was having a bad golfing trend, shooting regularly in the high seventies. The world of golf was stunned when Nicklaus’ game suddenly and miraculously improved. “Wednesday night I had a dream and it was about my golf swing,” Nicklaus said. “I was hitting them pretty good in the dream and all at once I realized I wasn’t holding the club the way I’ve actually been holding it lately.”
The golfing legend was stunned that his dream perfectly analyzed the problem in his golf-swing, something his conscious mind was unable to solve. “I’ve been having trouble collapsing my right arm taking the club head away from the ball, but I was doing it perfectly in my sleep.” When he awoke, Nicklaus remembered his dream’s “golfing technique” and applied it to his real-life golf game!
A young Albert Einstein first conceived his Theory of Relativity in a dream! Einstein’s fellow scientist and close friend, Niels Bohr (18851962), also experienced an inspirational dream, himself, which led to
his discovery of the structure of the atom! And Nobel Prizing-winning scientist, Frederick Banting (18911941), said it was a dream episode that gave him the idea and solution on how to treat diabetes with insulin! Banting’s dream changed and improved the lives of countless millions of diabetic-sufferers around the world! All thanks to a dream. Numerous examples of dreams are recorded throughout history, helping writers, artists, scientists, and inventors create and solve their individual problems through their dreams!
SLEEP AND DREAMS. Since the dawn of human civilization, sleep and dreams have captured the imagination of every culture that has ever existed on this great planet of ours. From the ancient cavedwellers to the present homo sapiens, sleep and dreams continue to be an elusive mystery, like a beguiling temptress who is unwilling to reveal all her hidden secrets. From the time when our earliest ancestors thought dreams to be special messages from the mysterious Great Beyond or that the soul journeys out of the body to visit and experience far-away places, dreams – even to this day – are greatly misunderstood and to a large part – still remain a puzzle to us all.
Tackling Valley Fever
Valley Fever is in our soil and the very air we breathe. Since 2011, confirmed cases of Valley Fever have been reported in 50 of California’s 58 counties, reaching a record of 5,372 confirmed cases in 2016. And the problem is growing, with 7,471 provisional cases reported in 2017.
This region is also impacted by Valley Fever, with 63 cases reported in Riverside County and 123 in San Diego County during 2016. Valley Fever, which is caused by breathing in fungus spores that live in the soil, is spread when soil is disturbed by wind or by human activities such as digging or plowing. Unfortunately, once the spores become airborne, they can be carried hundreds of miles by the wind.
Symptoms often include fever, cough, rash, headache and muscle or joint pain. The infection can lead to chronic pneumonia and can spread from the lungs to the rest of the body, sometimes causing meningitis (spine or brain infection) and even death Because the symptoms resemble many other common diseases,

Valley Fever cases are underreported. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has called Valley Fever a “silent epidemic,” and estimates that nationwide 150,000 cases go undiagnosed every year.
To help tackle this serious health problem, this year I will be coauthoring a package of bills aimed at addressing Valley Fever in our state and region. Among the new initiatives, legislation will encourage greater utilization of tests to identify new cases, foster collaboration and communication between state and local health officials dealing with the disease, require new health standards to prevent and control the disease in public works projects, and encourage more training for physicians and surgeons. By taking these small steps, we can move toward reining in this preventable and treatable disease.

Achieving New Milestones in the Attack Against AML – Each year, more than 21,000 Americans are diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a rapidly progressing disease that remains one of the most lethal blood cancers. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) went on the offensive against AML in 2016 by launching the groundbreaking Beat AML® Master Clinical Trial. We’re leading the charge against AML by taking a precision medicine approach, which involves giving the right treatment to the right patient at the right time. LLS is leading an unprecedented collaboration among cancer centers, pharmaceutical companies and technology companies to address this urgent, unmet medical need. And progress has been made. More than 180 patients are now enrolled in this innovative trial at seven of the country’s most prestigious cancer centers, with more pharmaceutical companies and cancer centers joining soon. In other news, LLS saw four new therapies approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2017. These latest breakthroughs marked the first significant

sources describe Rice encountering an elderly black stableman working in one of the river towns where Rice was performing. According to some accounts the man had a crooked leg and deformed shoulder. He was singing about Jim Crow, and punctuating each stanza with a little jump.
A more likely explanation behind the origin of the character is that Rice had observed and absorbed AfricanAmerican traditional song and dance over many years. He grew up in a racially-integrated Manhattan neighborhood, and later Rice toured the Southern slave states. Geri clearly possesses these wonderful qualities and has so demonstrated them for over 30 years. Her official position in the Club is appropriately designated the ‘Sunshine’ Chairperson. December 17 Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her. God I hate it when she's right. I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room. December 20 Electricity's back on, but had another 14 inches of the damn stuff last night. More shoveling! Took all day. The dam snowplough came by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey. I think they're lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they're out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they're lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he's lying.
December 22 Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white crap fell today, and it's so cold, it probably won't melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to pee. By the time I got undressed, peed and dressed again, I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plough on his truck for the rest of the winter, but he says he's too busy. I think the butthole is lying.
The Most Talked About Man Who Never Was
His name has been bantered about for more than 100 years, yet no one ever knew him even though everyone knew and knows what his name connotates.
Jim Crow wasn’t a real person, rather a mid-1800s theater character created by Thomas D. Rice and an ethnic depiction in accordance with contemporary Caucasian ideas of African-Americans and their culture. The character was based on a folk trickster named Jim Crow that was long popular among black slaves. Rice also adapted and popularized a traditional slave song called "Jump Jim Crow.”
The character was dressed in rags with battered hat and torn shoes. Rice blackened his face and hands and impersonated a very nimble and irreverently witty African-American field hand who sang, "Turn about and wheel about, and do just so. And every time I turn about I Jump Jim Crow." Rice's famous stage persona eventually lent its name to a generalized negative and stereotypical view of black people. The shows peaked in the 1850s, and after Rice's death in 1860 interest in them faded. There was still some memory of them in the 1870s however, just as the "Jim Crow" segregation laws were surfacing in the United States. The Jim Crow period, which started when segregation rules, laws and customs surfaced after the Reconstruction era ended in the 1870s, existed until the mid-1960s when the struggle for civil rights in the United States gained national attention.
December 23 Only 2 inches of snow today. And it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she, nuts?! Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did but I think she's lying.

“Jim Crow laws” mandated racial segregation in all public facilities in the states of the former Confederate States of America, starting in 1896 with a "separate but equal" status for AfricanAmericans in railroad cars. Public education had essentially been segregated since its establishment in most of the South after the Civil War. This principle was extended to public facilities and transportation, including segregated cars on interstate trains and, later, buses.
“Jim Crow laws,” sometimes, as in Florida, part of state constitutions, mandated the segregation of public schools, public places, and public transportation, and the segregation of restrooms, restaurants, and drinking fountains for whites and blacks. The U.S. military already was segregated. President Woodrow Wilson, a Southerner, initiated segregation of federal workplaces in 1913, at the request of Wilson’s southern members in his Cabinet. After World War II, African-Americans increasingly challenged segregation, as they believed they had more than earned the right to be treated as full citizens because of their military service and sacrifices. The Civil Rights Movement was energized by a number of flashpoints, including the 1946 police beating and blinding of World War II veteran Isaac Woodard while he was in U.S. Army uniform. In 1948 President Harry S. Truman issued Executive Order 9981, desegregating the armed services. As the Civil Rights Movement gained momentum it used federal courts to attack Jim Crow statutes. Ultimately, liberal-thinking legislators began dominating governments of many of the Southern states, passing and reversing most of the so-called Jim Crow laws.

The term “Jim Crow laws” were so-call discriminatory state and local laws that enforced racial segregation in the Southern United States. Enacted by white Democratic party-dominated state legislatures in the late 19th century after the Reconstruction period, these laws continued to be enforced until 1965.
The actual origin of the Jim Crow character has been lost to legend. One story claims it is Rice's emulation of a black slave that he had seen in his travels through the Southern United States, whose owner was a Mr Crow. Several

Pastor Hal Seed New Song Community Church
Is a Biblical prophecy being fulfilled right now?
Ten years ago, when I wrote the book Future History, people began asking me, “Do you think the Lord will return soon?” My answer has been, “No one knows the day or the hour, but I don’t think He will return soon, because Ezekiel’s War has to take place before the Tribulation can begin.” Last month I hosted Dan Gordon for New Song’s weekend services. Dan is a spokesman for the Israel Defense Force, with intimate knowledge of what is going on
in the Middle East. Dan told our congregation that Israel has been quietly tending the wounded in the Syrian War just across her border. Israel is also quietly burying the dead from this war that has involved Syrians, Russians and Iranians, as well as the fighters of ISIS. Dan pointed us to Ezekiel 39:12, which reads, “For seven months the Israelites will be burying them in order to cleanse the land.” He said, “Estimates are, it will take Israel seven months to bury all the dead from the Syrian War.” It’s possible that Ezekiel’s 2,500-year-old prophecy is being fulfilled today. In which case, there is one less event that must take place before the return of Christ.
There’s a Chinese blessing (or curse?) that says, “May you live in interesting times.” We certainly do. If Ezekiel’s War is now over, the next chapter of human history could get very interesting.

Pre-construction work begins on San Marcos Creek bridge project
Work is underway to relocate utilities along Discovery Street, Via Vera Cruz, and Bent Avenue to make room for significant infrastructure enhancements in the San Marcos Creek area.
Future enhancements will include the widening of Discovery Street to four-lanes between Bent Avenue and Via Vera Cruz, a new four-lane bridge spanning the creek on Via Vera Cruz, and a two-lane bridge on Bent Avenue. The project will also create a promenade park and resolve the area’s longstanding flooding issues. During the utility relocation work, westbound
and eastbound lane closures along Discovery Street and side streets from Via Vera Cruz to Craven Road will be in place through summer 2018. Work will take place Monday through Friday between 9 am and 2 pm.
Street and bridge construction is expected to begin in early 2019 through late 2020.This project is a significant component of the city’s future. In addition to relieving flooding issues, improving traffic flow and supporting habitat conservation efforts, the project provides the backbone infrastructure needed for future growth in the San Marcos Creek District. him to death with my broken shovel. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the damn snowplough.
December 25 Merry fricking Christmas! 20 more inches of the damn slop tonight Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. God, I hate the snow! Then the snowplough driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think she's a fricking idiot. If I have to watch "It's A Wonderful Life" one more time, I'm going to stuff her into the microwave. December 26 Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves.
December 27 Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze; plumber came after 14 hours of waiting for him, he only charged me $1,400 to replace all my pipes. December 28 Warmed up to above -20. Still snowed in. My WIFE is driving me crazy!
December 29 10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That's the silliest thing I ever heard.
How dumb does he think I am?
December 30 Roof caved in. I beat up the snow plough driver, and now he is suing me for a million dollars, not only the beating I gave him, but also for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up his BUTT. The wife went home to her mother. Nine more inches predicted. December 31 I set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling.
Pretty proud that after all these years I still have the body of a 22 yr old triathlete. In my storage shed. Decided I needed a little more peace and quiet in my life so I bought myself a phoneless cord.
200 dead crows found near Topeka, KS. and there was concern that they may have died from Avian Flu. They had a Bird Pathologist examine the remains of all the crows, & he confirmed the problem was definitely NOT Avian Flu, to everyone's relief.
However, he determined that 98% of the crows had been killed by impact with trucks, & only 2% were killed by an impact with a car. Kansas then hired an Ornithological Behaviorist to determine the disproportionate percentages for truck versus car kill.
The Ornithological Behaviorist determined the cause in short order.
When crows eat road kill, they always set-up a look-out Crow in a nearby tree to warn of impending danger. His conclusion was that all the lookout crows could say "Cah", but none could say "Truck."

One fine day at an Oklahoma saloon, a cowboy ties his horse to the hitching rail and goes in to the bar. He orders a whisky and proceeds to drink it. Some time and several more drinks later, the cowboy leaves the saloon to find that his horse has been stolen. He calmly walks back into the saloon, draws his pistol and holds it pointed at the ceiling, and proclaims in a loud voice "Someone in this godforsaken place has stolen my horse. This happened to me once before, back in Texas." Lowering the pitch of his voice, but not losing any volume, he continued "And I DON'T wanna hafta do what I done back in Texas. I'm gonna have one more drink, and my horse better be back when I'm done." True to his word, the cowboy holsters his pistol and orders one more drink, and when he finishes it he leaves the saloon to find his horse tied to the rail. He checks his saddle bags and satisfied that nothing is missing, he proceeds to mount up. As he's preparing to ride away, one brave witness from inside the bar steps up and says "I gotta know
- what did you do back in Texas when this happened before?" The cowboy shrugs and says "I hadda walk home." A Good Policy
An insurance salesman was getting nowhere in his efforts to sell a policy to a rancher. “Look at it this way,” he said finally. “How would your wife carry on if you should die?”
“Well,” answered the rancher after giving it some thought, “I don’t reckon that’s any concern of mine, so long as she behaves herself while I’m alive.” A Shy Cowboy
Two cowboys went to a night club show. As the chorus girls pranced out to perform their number, one cowboy turned to the other and whispered, “See that fine lookin’ gal on the left end. I feel like taking her out again.” “Why I didn’t know you had taken her out before,” answered the other.
“Well I ain’t,” came the reply. “But once before I felt like it.”

Privacy, Windows updates and security part II of III
Everyone laments the lack of privacy these days. Internet and smart phone service providers collect and compile our history of transactions, locations and activities. There are surveillance cameras every few feet indoors and out, and everyone around you has a cell phone camera just waiting to record your most inappropriate or embarrassing public moment. Our founding fathers might have included the protection of privacy in the Constitution if they’d only had smart phones, but they had no idea it would ever come to this. Personal privacy is not a constitu-
The technologies employed to record, store and retrieve electronic and video surveillance have foiled terrorists, caught crooks and nailed cheating wives and husbands. Mostly that’s a good thing. We also benefit from the fast electronic storage/retrieval of our personal information when it makes financial transactions safer and easier and facilitates access to information that we need. The problem with having our personal data stored in so many places is the increased risk of identity theft and that it has forced us to be more vigilant and take countermeasures..
It’s the snooping of our smart phone and Internet activity that disturbs us most. Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Verizon and others attempt to record our every touch, keystroke and voice message. They have access to our Internet activity on tablets, phones and PCs. They have access to all of our personal data, credit cards, bank accounts and passwords. They know when you visit “lesbian Mud Wrestling,” Farmers Only.com, How to build your own IED or the do-it yourself site on “how to murder your spouse with an anti-freeze cocktail.” They also know whose driveway you were parked in last Saturday night when you told your wife you were working late. They have access to all of the above because they have records of your activity, but they aren’t really interested in exposing your personal secrets. It would take a lot of
