Though laughter and humor seem the exact opposites of tragedy these opposing elements in human life can miraculously work together to offset the negative. Currently, the science of medicine is studying the hidden miraculous healing power of laughter even in the most unlikeliest of events. Dr. Robert R. Provine, professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of Maryland and author of “Laughter: A Scientific Investigation,” agrees strongly with the world’s scientific community that this unknown factor needs to be rediscovered: “The definitive research into the potential health benefits of laughter just hasn’t been done yet.” And San Diego’s own brilliant young Sophia Brock, a prestigious UCSD orthotech/medical practitioner (already featured on the cover of The Paper on April 7, 2016), is a powerful pioneering force behind this phenomenal worldwide study. Recent shocking discoveries that have stunned global scientists are that laughter actually releases a body chemical known as ‘endorphin’ which, among other things, actually boosts the human immune system!

It happened on March 30, 1981 when the world witnessed the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan, only 68 days into his presidency. While departing a speaking engagement at the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C, President Reagan and three others were shot and wounded by John Hinckley, Jr. Reagan was shot in the chest just under the left underarm. He had suffered a punctured lung resulting in heavy internal bleeding. At George Washington University Hospital medical personnel scrambled to stabilize the president. The president’s blood pressure was at a dangerous level of 60 versus the normal 140, indicating that he was in a state of shock. According to medical experts at the scene most 70year-olds in the president’s condition would not be expected to survive. Despite this dismal situation and even though in a state of shock, the president revealed an astonishing perseverance of humor to pull him through. This powerful will-to-live predicated on humor is still an “uncharted” area of medicine that can be the determining factor in a lifeor-death situation. When wife Nancy Reagan arrived in the emergency room President Reagan remarked to her, “Honey, I forgot to duck,” borrowing a humorous line from heavyweight boxer Jack Dempsey to his wife after losing to Gene Tunney. The tenacity of President Reagan to hold onto humor when he was intubated (tube inserted into his body) greatly surprised those attending him. Though still in a state of shock and in great pain, the president refused to refrain from humor. There was no stopping him. At one point the president even scribbled a note to a nurse, “All in all, I’d rather be in Philadelphia,” borrowing another comedic line, this time from W. C. Fields. A pattern was developing

which clearly revealed that President Ronald Reagan wished to hold fast to his humor in the face of death. Reagan’s heroic persistence at cracking jokes was his planned attack against impending doom, and he knew what he was doing. Dr. Benjamin L. Aaron, chief of thoracic surgery knew the life-strengthening benefit of humor during a crisis and was well aware of its miraculous healing and strengthening powers. Dr. Aaron decided to perform a thoracotomy (placing an incision into the president’s chest) lasting 105 minutes because the bleeding had not been successfully stopped. Reagan would lose over half of his blood volume in the emergency room and during surgery. Reagan had already made several attempts at humor prior to his surgery which shocked the attending physicians, but he was not yet done. What followed

next was extremely unusual and admirable. In the operating room President Ronald Reagan actually halted the initial life-saving surgery by removing his oxygen mask from his face while lying flat on the operating table insisting on cracking another joke. The unexpected and bizarre act of Reagan physically removing his own oxygen mask from his face was something he felt compelled to do, just so that he could unleash yet another comedic volley, “I hope you are all Republicans.” This last valiant attempt to resort to humor surprised and greatly impressed the medical staff. The doctors and nurses all laughed raucously loud. Dr. Giordano, a selfproclaimed Democrat, replied, “Today, Mr. President, we are all Republicans.” Such events as cited above have captured

world headlines in regards to the power of humor in a life-threatening crisis. Talking to the print media last week, Sophia Brock refers to such scenarios as “humor therapy” and “alternative therapy,” which can be the deciding factor between life and death as in the case with President Ronald Reagan. As impossible as it may seem, laughter has now been discovered to protect the human heart by improving the function of blood vessels and increasing blood flow which can protect against a heart attack and other related cardiovascular problems even to the point of releasing infection-fighting antibodies – all the critical elements which came into play with President Ronald Reagan’s surgery and eventual recovery – when he was initially not even expected to survive --

back in 1981. It was a true medical miracle!

n December of 2008 I took a nasty fall from a very high industrial ladder while working for Hunter Douglas, Inc. (a national company which creates window coverings) in Poway, California. The impact from the fall was so ferocious (I landed face-down from a high altitude, accelerating during descent) that doctors later told me it was a miracle I did not die on impact! “If we were to replay your event 100 times over, you probably would only survive twice!” they would later tell me. The dizzying calculations against my survival was incomprehensible to me.

At the time of this horrific accident, I was quickly transported to Palomar Hospital in Escondido. More dead than alive, I was attended by no less than seven doctors during a frantic effort to save my life on the operating table. A coworker had accompanied the paramedics so that he could give a summary of what happened and to provide vital details of the fall. With no recollections, whatsoever, I was later told that while semi-conscious with periodic lapses into unconsciousness, the paramedics were steadily talking to me trying to keep me from lapsing into prolonged unconsciousness, and possible death. As related to me much later, the two paramedics tending to me yelled to my coworker sitting in front. Through the open doorway the paramedics shouted, “What’s his name?! He’s talking but we can’t understand the language!” My coworker, named Carlos Ambriz, was a decorated Vietnam veteran and had seen worse casualties, but none that hit him this hard – we had become best friends. I’m told that he

I don't mean to brag, but ... I finished my 14-day diet in 3 hours and 20 minutes. A recent study has found that women who carry a little extra weight live longer than men who mention it.

Carlos Ambriz would later tell me that whilst he cradled my bloodied body waiting for the paramedics at the scene of the accident, I had apologized on getting blood on his jacket. It astounded him that I was thinking more about inconveniencing him rather than my own possible doom. My eyes would periodically open then they would roll back under my eyelids as I would slip back-and-forth into unconsciousness. At one point he said he looked skyward and said, “Please God, don’t take him from me! Please God, I beg of you!”

At Palomar Hospital in Escondido, I was rushed into emergency surgery in attempts to stabilize me. I had lost too much blood necessitating an emergency blood transfusion procedure. It was quickly discovered that my injuries seemed without limits: all my ribs on the right side were shattered, the femur of my right leg was also demolished, both my eye sockets were fractured and my left eye was bulged-out almost completely destroyed, and the left side of my facial bones were splintered into tiny fractures. In addition to all of this, I had massive dental trauma and a deadly hematoma was now discovered around my brain. The hematoma was technically referred to as a “subdural hematoma,” a collection of blood outside the brain caused by a severe head injury. You can well imagine the power of impact to the head that would cause internal bleeding inside the skull around the physical brain. The bleeding and increased pressure on the brain can be life-threatening. In my specific case, it was another miracle that it did not kill me outright at the scene of the fall.

Kids today don't know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpeting to change the TV channel. Senility has been a smooth transition for me.

Remember back when we were kids and every time it was below zero outside, they closed school? Me neither. I may not be that funny or athletic or good looking or smart or talented ... I forgot where I was going with this.

I love being over 50. I learn something new every day ... and forget 5 others. A thief broke into my house last night. He started searching for money, so I woke up and searched with him. My dentist told me I need a crown. I was like: I KNOW! Right?

I think I'll just put an "Out of Order" sticker on my forehead and call it a day.

A surgical team worked the upper half of my body and head while another team of surgeons attended to the lower half of my bloodied form. In short, I was like a virtual humpty-dumpty with seven doctors frantically trying to piece me back together again. At one point they said they almost lost me, altogether. I had flatlined twice on the operating table.

I can only remember waking up in a hospital bed. Despite pain killers, I was in pain 24/7. Then, bits and pieces of the situation came into view. My right leg was re-constructed with titanium rods and plates and screws. A dental surgeon, miraculously, successfully addressed my dental trauma and without losing any of my teeth, a plastic & reconstructive surgeon also worked inside my mouth, an ophthalmologist intervened to save my left eye and both eyesight. Two neurosurgeons remedied the brain hematoma disaster area, and general surgeons worked in sync to save this Native American they would soon know as “White Eagle.” I was bedridden and given three stomach injections before bedtime to prevent any possible stroke. Eventually, I had to be carried to and from the restroom and given sponge baths. Occasionally, I was transported via a gurney whenever Xrays were needed to be taken for periodic updates on imaging. The slightest movement caused severe physical pain, eliciting cries of anguish from me. My refusal to eat any puree foods caused me to waste away to the point that my attending doctors threatened to put me on intravenous feeding. Seeing my image in the mirror caused me great shock and endless torment of grief and tears. The image in the mirror staring back at me was that of a purple monster,

"My bloody hair and makeup are not done, the house is a mess, the dishes aren't done. Can't you see I'm still in my pyjamas and I can't be bothered with cooking tonight? Why the hell did you bring him home unannounced, you stupid idiot?" The guys answers: "Because he's thinking of getting married." Canadian Conjoined Twins

Conjoined twins walk into a bar in Canada and park themselves on a barstool. One of them says to the bartender, "Don't mind us; we're joined at the hip. I'm John, he's Jim. Two Molson Canadian beers, draft please."

The bartender, feeling slightly awkward, tries to make polite conversation while pouring the beers. "Been on holiday yet, lads?"

"Off to England next month," says John. "We go to England every year, rent a car and drive for miles. Don't we, Jim?" Jim agrees.

"Ah, England!" says the bartender. "Wonderful country... the history, the beer, the culture..."

"Nah, we don't like that British crap," says John. "Hamburgers and Molson's beer, that's us, eh Jim? And we can't stand

Eventually, I was moved to the ninth floor where I had to learn to walk all over again as if I were a small child; tiny steps with the aid of my therapist. It was an excruciating process. I was still a total mess. I was now a cripple with every fiber of my being inflamed with pain despite any pain killers, including high doses of morphine intravenously. Native Americans, in particular, don’t take too kindly to having their wings clipped. One miserable day when my pupils first took in the first filaments of early morning light, I moaned in pain and cursed my existence. I had lost my will to live.

Then, one extraordinary day, it happened. A kind patient across the hall brought me my very first copy of Lyle E. Davis’ The Paper. I read the chuckles under the column, “Give Us This Day Our Daily Chuckle” and my laughter could be heard down the hospital halls. It was that loud. Scared the cider out of my doctors who all came running to my bedside! When they quickly found out that the cause of my sudden ‘turn in life’ was a newspaper, well, they just stood and looked at each other. The orthopedist examined The Paper and quipped, “Hell, maybe we should have this damned newspaper in all the patients’ rooms!” It was only a matter of time that the doctors discovered a small stack of The Paper under my pillow. When it came time for my injections on my stomach I began crying all over again. Then one of my doctors got a bright idea. My neurologist said, “Let him hold the stack of those newspapers!”

They did. And I hugged them and stopped crying.

The doctors knew. The orthopedic surgeon who rebuilt my leg knew. The ophthalmologist who salvaged my eyes and sight knew, and so did the neurologist who was now monitoring me after the neurosurgeons did their work. They all knew. That laughter can sometimes be the best medicine the world has ever known. And The Paper gave me that medicine each and every Thursday!

One day when the doctors hovered over me, examining me from head-to-toe, I noticed someone new. I knew all of my doctors, all seven of them but, this one, I did not recall. When I buzzed the nurses’ station and asked them to please send him back to my room, he slowly walked back with a gentle smile. “I’m so sorry, but I know all my doctors, but, I don’t remember you” I asked. Still smiling, he looked down at me in bed and said, “You weren’t supposed to remember me. You were unconscious at the time. I’m the doctor who successfully stabilized you. I was the doctor who kept you alive. I’m neurosurgeon, Dr. Stern.” With both my arms fully extended straight up in the air like a small child, I reached up to him the best I could and he lowered his powerful frame gently so that I could give him a tiny hug. Along with his gentle smile I could actually see tears in his eyes.

For some odd reason, all the nurses (both day and night shifts) formed an unusually close bond with me – more so than the average nurse-patient relationship that I had come to know. I was now slowly learning to walk all over again, like the baby I once was. I was taught how to walk with crutches and how to put myself, carefully, back into my wheelchair. My wheelchair was my chariot and I could now visit other patients, and I did. However, I was warned by the nurses’ station to stay out of one grouchy old man’s room. Even the nurses had a difficult time with him. Curious, I went with my wheelchair and sat at his doorway looking in. “What the hell do you want?!” he growled in my direction. He looked very old and ornery. Yet, day by day, I took my wheel-

chair to his room and he soon stopped cussing at me. I saw a photo of a pretty lady sitting on his nightstand and asked who she was. He remained silent for a few seconds and then said, “My wife. She passed a few years back. Left me alone. A part of me went with her. Still lickin’ my wounds, I guess.” In time he talked about his upbringing in Faraday, Louisiana. He shared slices of his life with me: the old fishing hole, wearing his Sunday best, his old coon hound, Jasper, and how he first met his wife and fell in love. He had no close kinfolk to visit him. To this day, I never saw the same man the nurses had warned me about. He wasn’t really mean, he just hurt a lot, deep inside. Once when I missed a day due to exhaustive physical tests, etc., he angrily asked me the following day, “Where the hell were you? You Injuns can’t tell time? You didn’t poke your damned nose in here to bother me!” That was the day he handed me a beautiful old pocket watch and told me, “Here, take this. Maybe you’ll learn to keep time with it. And don’t break the damned thing, either! It’s yours -- just for safekeeping, till I come git it from you.” On the backside of the pocket watch was etched his name, “James T. Ferguson.”

One day, after asking the nurse to place me in my wheelchair from my bed, I whirled past the nurse’s station on my way to see my grumpy new pal, Mr. Ferguson. I stopped my wheelchair at his doorway only to see the nurses cleaning out his bed and putting new linen on it. His wife’s photo was gone, too. Everything on his dresser was also gone. The nurses looked at me and with a grim look one of them said, “He’s gone, honey. He passed away last night. I’m very sorry. I think you were like family to him. You should be proud of yourself. You have the rare honor of having been his best friend.”

I didn’t eat supper that night. I just cried in bed. I did my therapy okay, I guess. A few days later, my therapist told me she had a surprise for me. “I’m taking you out to the front lobby and letting you walk on your crutches outside, for a bit of fresh air.” My eyes lit up. “Are you serious?!”

Off we went on my wheelchair and I transferred to my crutches outside the sliding glass entranceway. I knew what I wanted to do. I could see the newspaper rack about 40-feet away in the distance.

Visit the Carlsbad Street Fair – On Sunday, May 1st the largest one-day familyfriendly street fair in the nation will be held in Carlsbad from 8am-5pm, along 14 blocks, on Grand Avenue from Carlsbad Boulevard to Jefferson Street, and all cross streets in between will be closed for the event. When she put me on my crutches I made my way to the rack, smiling from ear to ear. “Okay, let me walk by myself without the crutches.” She often let me do this, but she was forever timid and only let me take baby steps, shadowing me, mother-like. Ten feet from the rack I said, “Okay, now lemme go. I wanna walk there by myself.” I slowly walked, and every time I wobbled or teetered a bit, I heard her gasp out loud, but I gently waved her off. “I can do this,” I reassured her. Finally, slowly, I arrived at the newspaper rack at glacier speed and with a wide smile and bulging eyes I leaned – supporting myself on the rack – and picked up a copy of The Paper. For the very first time I actually got my own copy of The Paper – by myself! I clutched it to my chest as if I had won some gold medal at the U.S. Olympics. My therapist knew what had just happened and I could see her smiling and wiping tears from her eyes at the same time. She clapped with encouragement and then slowly placed me back in my wheelchair. As melodramatic as all this may sound, it was truly a God-given moment for me and I could hear myself whisper, haltingly, to myself, “I want . . . to live. I want . . . to live. I don’t want . . . to die anymore.” On my last day at the hospital, which seemed like an eternity, I was so overjoyed to be checking out, at last. Looking back, the whole medical staff was shocked at how quickly my bones mended and my overall recovery.

Each and every day, I remembered my promise to myself when I was at Palomar Hospital. That weekly publication called The Paper truly helped me survive my worst nightmare. Truly, my worst nightmare. The chuckles gave me laughter which I thought had perished in that frightful fall that nearly killed me. I made a solemn promise that I would someday write for The Paper and give back what it gave to me. Hope. And inspiration. And the ability to laugh and be happy all over again. Odd thing is that the publisher/owner of The Paper, lyle e. davis, never knew what he was doing in helping me piece my life together. All that time, he never knew my name, nor my anguish, and struggles, nor how I lost my will to live. Odd how things and people in life can be crucial in salvaging a human life – and not even be

aware of it. Lyle and Associate Publisher, and part owner, Evelyn Madison, are like family to me and I just love being in their company. And I kept my promise I vowed on my hospital bed – so far this is my 38th front cover story for The Paper! And the most difficult for me to write, I might add. Today I am fully recovered and you would never guess that I had such a terrible accident in life. The medical doctors were shocked at my speedy recovery and how fast my bones healed. They referred to me as “The Miracle Patient.”

Still, to this very day, every so often, I will sit on my sofa and read the chuckles over and over again in The Paper. They still make me laugh out loud. And I still hold them close to me when I remember how things once were. Oh, and by the way, I still have that beautiful, beautiful pocket watch that a wonderful man once handed to me, Mr. Ferguson. I keep it shiny and in a safe place on a nightstand close to my pillow at night. It reminds me of a very personal friend who gave it to me for “safekeeping.” He never did make it back to get it from me. I have a very strong suspicion he never planned to. And by the way, it keeps perfect time ‘cause I take good care of it. Mr. Ferguson would be very proud of me. Editor’s Note: Sadly, there is no longer a news rack for The Paper at Palomar Medical Center for other patients to enjoy.

We have new management there. We are hopeful that perhaps they will once again allow us to distribute The Paper at their hospital. We would be willing to not only place a newsrack there but to deliver copies to every floor, sufficient to provide a copy to every patient, nurse, doctor and/or other staff member, all at no charge. The relationship between Friedrich Gomez, lyle e. davis, (which is how I prefer my name to be printed) and Evelyn Madison, has become something of a love affair. We greatly admire Friedrich’s ability to research articles ... and then weave them into fascinating stories. But we love him as a man. As a friend. As a colleague. As a writer. He is a very special person to The Paper and to lyle and Evelyn, personally.

On Friday, Apr. 22nd, at approximately 5:20 a.m., officers from the Carlsbad Police Department responded to the report of a vehicle burglary that just occurred in the 7200 block of Blue Heron Place. Security officers for the business provided timely information regarding the suspects’ descriptions and shared their video surveillance which captured the incident. The suspect vehicle was identified as a tan ’99 Toyota 4Runner. At 5:23 a.m., officers received notification that a resident in the 6700 block of Heath Court just witnessed his neighbor’s vehicle being burglarized. Sergeant Paul Reyes located the suspect vehicle at a nearby motel. Patrol officers and members of the Investigations Division made contact with four subjects at the motel. Stolen property from the above vehicle burglaries was located inside their motel room.

The vehicle burglary suspects were identified as 30 yr. old Joshua Widre and 25 yr. old Nicholas Kristselis, both of Encinitas. A third suspect identified as 26 yr. old Erin Isbell of Chula Vista, was arrested for unrelated outstanding warrants. All three subjects were booked into the Vista Detention Facility. lic’s help in locating the killer of 35year old Brandon Keiser. Keiser was fatally shot in front of the Ocenaide Condo about a month ago. Police are hoping someone may have a tip to help locate the shooter in this senseless killing.

since the start of 2012. Police detectives have made an arrest in 30 cases — a 94 percent solve rate. All 30 cases ended with a conviction, Keim said.

On March 22, shortly after 10 p.m., Oceanside police responded to a report of gunfire on South Freeman Street south of Missouri Avenue. They found Keiser dead on the sidewalk. Detectives don’t think the shooting was random, and neighbors told investigators that they’d heard arguing before the gunfire.

North County Agency Shares in $1 Million to Fight Trafficking

By all accounts Brandon Keiser was a popular figure, known as a passionate surfer and an avid reader; he was an educated man who just loved to surf.

Keiser’s friends say he was responsible, respectful and non-confrontational.

Keiser grew up in the San Pasqual Valley near Escondido and graduated from San Pasqual High School in 1999. When it came time to choose a college location, he selected Cal Poly San Luis Obispo so he could surf while he earned his business degree. Police are hoping that someone will come forward with information to help them identify the killer.

“If you have any information about what happened, that will help us,” Oceanside police spokesman Ryan Keim said.

A Memory . . .

George Lee

Going back to my younger years, back when I was an Army recruit in Basic Training at Fort Ord, California, I remembered George Lee. George Lee was a young Chinese man. Awkward, quiet, not at all athletic. I suppose the Army eventually found a place for him - but I've often thought he probably did not belong in the Army.

George Lee was the subject of ridicule from a lot of my barrack mates. Sometimes cruel taunts were sent his way.

One day in the chow hall I noticed George Lee sitting by himself at a table. I took my tray of food and sat down across from him. "Hiya, George. How's it going?"

North County Lifeline is among seven San Diego County nonprofit organizations that have teamed up in the fight against human trafficking and will split a $1 million state grant to help victims recover from their trauma.

Vista-based Lifeline will serve as the lead agency for the San Diego County collaborative, which came together to leverage their limited resources as they coordinate services for trafficking victims. The partnering agencies provide differing elements in victim recovery, from the time the person is first identified as a victim through the years of support that will follow.

Lifeline launched Project LIFE in 2011. The program is specifically designed to help fight human trafficking and offer support to victims.

We didn't talk a whole lot more but I kinda sensed he relaxed a bit. I may even have detected a slight smile. He had, at long last, found at least one friend on this otherwise sometimes hostile Army base.

A few weekends later we all got three day passes. I went into Monterey and Salinas. At Monterey we ate at a local restaurant on the pier then went over and watched the harbor seal bark and perform for tourists and lonely Army boys who threw food in the water.. That seal had us all rather well trained.

We returned to our barracks having had a pleasant day or two away from the Army base but having enjoyed no particularly adventurous weekend . . . and having met no girls. None. Nada. I think the parents of teenage and older girls probably advised their daughters to avoid soldier boys. They made all of $78 a month (I got $90 a month because I had time in the National Guard before joining the Army Reserve) . . . they would soon be moving away, being sent to all parts of the nation and the world. Bad idea to get involved with them. So, no girls were met.

In the barracks, later one evening, George Lee approached me . . . his only friend. "Dabit. I have someting show you!"

He opened up his wallet and there, in the center of the wallet, where most of us keep ID cards, or perhaps a photo or two . . . were two or three curly hairs. Turns out they were pubic hairs from a prostitute he had patronized on his three day weekend. George Lee had met a girl. A 'professional' girl . . . but, still, a girl. And I hadn't.

"From prostitute," George Lee said. I didn't know quite what to say.

"Well, George, that's very interesting." "I have lot of fun, Dabit."

"Good, George. I'm happy for you."

George Lee was not only taunted by his barracks mates but by his trainers as well.

One day, when we were out in the field learning about hand grenades, the instructors gave us a safety demonstration. A Cautionary Word about Solar The Solar Industry has Arrived

It is one of the biggest, most advertised industries to hit the American consumer in some time.

Solar Heating, Solar Air Conditioning, it covers a lot of areas and at a lesser cost than SDG&E would ever hope to deliver.

However, with burgeoning new industries come businesses that take advantage of the consumer . . . with misleading information, with high pressure tactics . . . and it pays to be aware of them.

A few months ago Evelyn Madison, associate publisher of The Paper, had attended a meeting to learn more about solar. The presentation was given by the owner of a prominent North County solar company. After checking into it more for a few months, she decided she was interested in pursuing solar for her home so she contacted the company. The owner was on an extended vacation so a sales representative contacted her. He then put together a quote and made a presentation to her in her home. She listened, generally liked what she heard, and asked a lot of questions; some of them repeatedly over another one or two meetings as well as telephone calls, and she asked her son to call him and discuss it as well. The sales rep explained the Ygrene Energy Fund, a state program known as the California P.A.C.E. financing

program for all types of energy upgrades that you can do. One of the specific questions she asked was: “Does this place a lien on my property?” The answer was “No, this would be a personal loan for you.” Continuing that discussion, there were several scenarios talked about, such as “If I sell this home, then the solar belongs to the new buyer, so who pays for the loan” and others.

Repeatedly, the sales rep assured her it was a ‘personal loan’ and would not place a lien on her property.

Based, in part, on those repeated assurances, Evelyn decided she’d have solar installed in her home. The initial application was completed so they could submit it to Ygrene and get the contract documents started. She received the contract late in the day one day and the sales rep called the next morning to set up a meeting to sign the contract and get the project started.

Between that sales call and the appointment time, however, Evelyn did a number of things. First, she read the contract. Thoroughly. To her shock and amazement, the contract repeatedly referred to a lien on the property; her property would be annexed to the CFD (Community Facilities District) established by the California Home Finance Authority (Mello-Roos) for the purposes of levying special taxes, and a lien to be recorded with the County of San Diego, against the property. This would then become the primary lien and if you have a mortgage, that lien would become secondary. One of the

paragraphs even talks about the responsibility of the owner to notify the mortgage holder of this action and they may not like it or be in agreement with it.

In addition to the lien, the interest rate was 8.49 percent, and it would increase her property taxes $5,000 per year for the 15 year loan for this solar system. Evelyn always has been a stickler for detail; having served on a number of boards and commissions she is used to reading contracts and looking for incorrect or misleading details. She also does the books for The Paper, is 25% owner of The Paper, does our proof reading and files the legal ads. She knows her stuff. Needless to say, she called the sales rep and canceled their meeting. However, he and the owner did show up at the appointed time to close the sale and were ‘surprised’ that she had called to cancel – they had not gotten her call. They go through their presentation again; Evelyn politely listens. Then she tells them again she is not going to go through with the project. She has changed her mind. She doesn’t like the contract and is not going to sign it. She tells them misrepresentations were made, that she was repeatedly told there would be no liens on her property and the contract clearly stated otherwise.

“Well,” said the sales rep, “there are weak liens and there are strong liens, and this one would be the weak lien.”

“I specifically asked you if this would put a lien on my property,” said Evelyn, “and you repeatedly told me that it would not.”

“Plus,” she said, “I learned that this project would add $5000 to my property taxes. Sorry, but I’m not going through with the sale.”

Then the high pressure began. “Well, there has to be some other reason than that,” the owner said rather condescendingly. “No, there wasn’t,” she said.

They continued their high pressure sales pitch.

Evelyn let them finish and then said, “I do not appreciate being talked to like this. I am not a stupid person. I do not like the contract. I do not like the fact that I was lied to about the lien. I’ve researched the issue. I’m canceling the project. The decision is final.” They then asked Evelyn if she planned to get solar at some other point in time; she said she may eventually but it will be under different circumstances. At which time the two solar people finally left, but not without some grumbling. The point is this:

Solar is here to stay. There are many solar companies from which to choose. It is important to choose from honest, reliable solar companies who do not resort to misrepresentation or high pressure tactics. Evelyn may well still decide to go solar. Or not. That’s her decision.

But, for certain, she’ll investigate much more before she invites other solar companies into her home to make a formal presentation. You should do the same.

The plan for the grant money is to develop uniform practices and approaches among the seven agencies, and that each is adopting Project LIFE’s tools to measure effectiveness. They will also have a universal screening system to identify whether a person has been a victim.

Lifeline, as the lead agency, will use the money to hire someone who can provide clinical training to the groups. The idea is to increase the number of people who will recognize the red flags indicating that a person may be a victim of trafficking, or vulnerable to it. Animal Lovers and activists are hoping they can persuade the Carlsbad City Council to issue a ban on retail pet stores from selling dogs, cats and rabbits, claiming that the inventory of dogs invariably are secured from Puppy Mills.

There’s a lot of legislating going on

April has been a busy month in Sacramento. Happily, many of my bills are moving forward, including Assembly Bills 2227 and 2061.

In an effort to reduce reckless driving caused by repeat offenders, AB 2227 provides that a person who drives with a suspended license and who causes bodily injury to another person must serve at least the minimum sentence for that offense. These offenders would not be eligible for early release through community service or work release programs. This bill brings clarity for police issuing citations.

AB 2061 will prioritize grant applications for employers who will hire previously incarcerated individuals under the state’s Supervised Workforce Training Grant program, encouraging employment for individuals who have been released from prison. By making it easier for a business or non-profit to hire rehabilitated

Bi-partisan passage of these bills is further evidence of growing cooperation in Sacramento. While we still disagree on many fundamental issues, we are often able to come together to support important policies that impact all Californians. AB 2227 and AB 2061 are perfect examples, having passed their respective committees in unanimous votes last week. Both bills will face additional committee hearings and a floor vote before final Assembly approval. He Could Have Changed the Outcome of WWII

If Adolf Hitler had listened to his top nuclear scientist and would have given him enough priority and money for development, World War II could have ended differently with Germany being first with the Atomic Bomb.

Werner Karl Heisenberg

Werner Karl Heisenberg was well on his way to developing an atomic weapon early in World War II, but after Hitler grabbed control of his armed forces, thinking he was smarter than his generals, the dictator didn’t have Heisenberg’s research high on his list of weapon development. The atomic program was certainly far behind in priority to Werhner von Braun’s rocket program. But that’s a rather simplistic explanation. Heisenberg, a Jew, was born Dec. 5, 1901, in Wurzburg. He was a German theoretical physicist and one of the key pioneers of quantum mechanics. He published his work in 1925 in a breakthrough paper.

Heisenberg was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for 1932 "for the creation of quantum mechanics.” While visiting a conference in the U.S., he was offered an opportunity of asylum like Albert Einstein and other German scientists had done, but he declined. He also made important contributions to the theories of the hydrodynamics of turbulent flows, the atomic nucleus, ferromagnetism, cosmic rays, and subatomic particles, and he was instrumental in planning the first West German nuclear reactor.

Considerable controversy surrounds his work on atomic research during World War II. In 1939, shortly after the discovery of nuclear fission, the

German nuclear energy project, also known as the “Uranium Club,” had begun. Heisenberg was the principal scientist leading research and development in the project. Heinrich Himmler, the notorious head of the Nazi SS, had a family connection with Heisenberg, (their mothers knew each other). Because of his value as a scientist, Heisenberg was declared a “White Jew,” and escaped the concentration camps. In the letter to Nazi SS Col. Reinhard Heydrich, Himmler said Germany could not afford to lose or silence Heisenberg, as he would be useful for teaching a generation of scientists. Writing to Heisenberg, Himmler said his letter came on recommendation of the scientist’s family and he cautioned Heisenberg to make a distinction between professional physics research results and the personal and political attitudes of the involved scientists.

In September 1941, Heisenberg traveled to German-occupied Copenhagen, Denmark, to lecture and discuss nuclear research and theoretical physics. The meeting, and specifically what it might reveal about Heisenberg's intentions concerning developing nuclear weapons for the Nazi regime, was made clear. Because of his Nobel Prize for Physics, Heisenberg was well-known to American scientists, especially Einstein, who was a former colleague and a German refugee from the Nazis. Heisenberg’s capabilities and Germany’s likely intentions were made clear by Einstein in a letter to President Franklin Roosevelt, which resulted in the Manhattan Project being formed – the U.S. development of the atomic bomb.

The scientists working feverishly for the U.S. effort, were constantly looking over their shoulders, fearing the German progress they were sure Heisenberg was making. It wasn’t until well into the Second World War that it was revealed the Germany had all but given up developing an atomic weapon. Ironically, this fact was revealed by a Major League baseball player, who also was a spy. In a previous column, I told you about Moe Berg. The U.S. Office of Strategic Services (forerunner of the CIA) sent baseball catcher and OSS agent Berg to attend a lecture in Switzerland carrying along a pistol with orders to shoot Heisenberg if his lecture indicated Germany was close to completing an atomic bomb. But, there was no such indication.

After the lecture, Berg found the scientist walking back to his hotel. Berg engaged him in conversation and, referring to Heisenberg’s lecture’s subject on atomic energy, asked if Germany was making headway on a weapon. Heisenberg admitted the idea was all but scrapped. Berg decided not to shoot Heisenberg, a decision the baseball player later described as his own "uncertainty principle.” When Berg’s information was leaked to the scientists at Las Alamos,

I was “down sizing , they say. “Decluttering.” In fact, I was going through a box of memories. Things I once decided to keep, but now can’t remember why. Maybe you’ve done this. Among the items was a letter from my grandfather written to me more than 60 years ago. He had excellent penmanship. Broad sweeping strokes that impressed me at that young age and still do today as I re read the letter.

The letter’s contents were pretty simple. He thanked me for the letter I wrote him, congratulated me on a good report card (There was no mention of it, but there was probably a crisp dollar bill enclosed) told me about the weather in Oregon and reminded me it would be just a few days until he and my grandmother would be at our house. I treas-

When was the last time you got a real, handwritten, hand addressed, delivered by the postal ser vice letter from someone? Don’t misunderstand. I text pretty well and fairly often for a 70 year old. Mostly to my grandchildren but also to some contemporaries. And I’m always telling someone, “e-mail me a reminder of that, will you?” But I love to get letters. Did you know that 21 of the 27 “books” of the New Testament are really letters? We call them epistles, a fancy word for a letter. Mostly Paul wrote them to encourage churches, people and those with whom he served the Lord. John, Jude, Peter and James wrote the rest for the same reasons as Paul.

The originals of these letters were handwritten, hand delivered and eagerly anticipated. Best of all, they contained good news. They helped people find their way through the issues of life and grow in their relationship with Jesus.

Just like my letter, they were treasured. They were shared. They were kept. And today, you can read them and let them touch your heart and mind. Even if you’ve already read them, they are worth a second or third read.

A new PC for the “Average User”

The “average user” is one without “high task” off-line demands. High end gamers, designers, graphic artists and video editors are not “average users.” We’re talking about user patterns that are 90% internet related with a few “low task” off-line applications. This discussion is about what that “average user” should look for in a new PC.

Whether it's a notebook or desktop the “average user” should expect to pay between $500-$700 for a new PC. Spending more is throwing money away and spending less risks buying a piece of “junk.” Steve Jobs was once asked why Apple chooses not to compete with Dell and HP in the low end PC business. Jobs said “There are some customers which we choose not to serve. We don't know how to make a $500 computer that's not

The entire bleacher section where we were all sitting, watching and listening to the demonstration, howled with laughter. Later on, we were given live grenades, told to pull the pin, throw, and drop to ground behind the sandbags. We all got through it . . . the grenades exploded away from the sandbagged enclosures and no one was hurt.

I assume George Lee also made it through as when I saw him later that day he still had all his arms and legs.

George Lee was a bit of a slob. He didn't shower. It looked like he had ringworm or something on the scalp of his head. Someone in the barracks decided it was time that we gave George Lee a "GI Party." Normally, a GI Party means we all turn to with mops, brooms, soap and water, and scrub down the entire barracks. Tonight, George Lee was to get his very own "GI Party." I got roped into it and remember, in the dark of night, leaving my bunk and crawling along the floor to George Lee's bunk where I slid under his bunk and held the blan-

Dell and HP no longer actually design and build PCs but there is a huge difference in the quality of the PCs they purchase for retail sales and those they purchase to sell to business (enterprise) customers. IT professionals demand performance, quality and reliability so Dell/HP purchases higher quality PCs from Asian PC makers to fill orders for “enterprise” customers. These higher cost, higher quality “enterprise” PC models are available as schools, governments and corporations often upgrade on two to four year cycles. These “refurbs” are always a better buy than a brand new low end retail PC.

For most home users the notebook is a fine alternative to a desktop.

I've often though of George Lee . . wondering whatever happened to him.

Have even thought about looking him up. I assume he was from the Bay area . . . and lots of luck finding a Chinese guy named George Lee in San Francisco . . . who was at Fort Ord, in Basic Training . . .in 1957. He may not even still be living.

Still, I'd like to find George Lee.

Some things you just don't forget. ••••• Big Deal at Dixon Lake this past weekend. Those rascals at the Hidden Valley Kiwanis Club of Escondido (of which I am one) held their 19th annual Trout Derby, their major fund-raiser, on Saturday and Sunday. Winning trout was a big ‘un! 12 lbs and 12 oz! We’ll have photos and the details in next week’s edition of The Paper. Beautiful weather, great compansionship, superb prizes! Thanks to Sherri Weeks Rivera who rounded up a ton of prizes and brought in a lot of new sponsors and to Jim Mac Isaac, the Chair of the whole event.

Jim amazes me. Attention to detail, works night and day on a project, and it all comes together, thanks to his leadership and dedication. A real supporter of the community and of Kiwanis. Jim and I opened up at 5am on both Saturday and Sunday. We are both early risers so that was no big deal. Hot coffee, donuts, but only after all the pieces had been put in place and we made ready for the fishermen. Almost all of the Hidden Valley Kiwanis Club turned out to take their turns greeting the public and having a wonderful time. More details and photos next week. It was fun!

PUBLIC NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the City of San Marcos, hereinafter referred to as Agency, invites sealed bids for the above stated Project and will receive such bids in the offices of Agency (Front Counter of Public Works), at San Marcos Public Works, 201 Mata Way, San Marcos, California 92069-2918, up to the hour of 10:00 a.m., on 5/13/16 at which time they will be publicly opened. DESCRIPTION OF WORK The work generally consists of parking lot modifications, building pad preparation, restroom building construction, pedestrian lighting system, mounded turf area, promenade area, irrigation system, landscaping, pedestrian pathways, drainage system, bio-retention area and other associated improvements as shown on the plans and included in the contract documents. Each bid must be accompanied by cash, a certified or cashier’s check payable to the City of San Marcos, or a satisfactory bid bond executed by the bidder and an acceptable surety, in an amount equal to ten percent (10%) of the total aggregate bid amount. The successful bidder will be required to furnish and pay for performance and payment bonds acceptable to the Agency. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that, pursuant to the San Marcos City Charter and the San Marcos Municipal Code, payment of prevailing wages and compliance with the California Labor Code Sections 1770 et seq IS required for this project. The Contractor to whom the Contract is awarded, and any subcontractor under such Contractor, shall hereby ensure that minority and women business enterprises will be afforded full opportunity to submit bids for subcontracts. Just to keep it simple, the opaque, stronger crowns are made from a Zirconia core and used in posterior teeth because they can withstand the stronger forces exerted in that region. The translucent, more color adjustable crowns are made from a pressured ceramic and are thus mostly used for anterior teeth. For those who have very strong bites and/or grind at night we now have a third option which allows us to “layer” porcelain onto the Zirconia based crowns resulting in stronger anterior teeth that won’t chip with their night-

time grinding!

In general the dentist will pick the appropriate cosmetic crown for you based on several factors including how much support is needed, whether the teeth are discolored, how much of the tooth is remaining, whether it will show when you’re speaking, eating, smiling, etc., as well as how much clearance you have with the opposing teeth, where your gum line is located, and finally, the color of your teeth. If you have an “unusual” color disposition, then the translucent crown may be the best choice!
