Someone once said that, “All mothers with teenagers fully understand why some animals eat their young.”
It isn’t easy to be a mother. For all they do, sacrifice, and teach us, mothers often suffer in silence. Well, not always in silence.
There is something universal about an angry mom’s voice -- when she shouts out her commands. All human beings are conditioned to The Paper - 760.747.7119

respond, no matter who you are or where you were born.
When your mother’s voice is loud enough, even the neighbors brush their teeth and get dressed quickly in a manner of animal instinct for survival. MOTHER’S DAY IS AN ANCIENT CUSTOM! Shocking news for many is that the concept of Mother’s Day is as old as the hills! And as incredible as it may sound, the world’s leading scholars of antiquity inform us that the roots of
Mother’s Day actually trace back thousands of years to ancient cultures, such as the Middle East, Greece, and Rome. (The History of Mother’s Day from the Ancient World to Today, the American University in Cairo, Egypt.) MOTHER’S DAY AROUND THE WORLD TODAY. Today, over 200 different countries celebrate Mother’s Day on different days and months of the year. For example, most Arab countries celebrate it on March 21.

America celebrates it every 2nd Sunday in May.

It’s a grueling gig, nonstop, 24/7.
Famous American singer Carrie Underwood knows the hours of motherhood are tortuous, with no sick leave, pay is non-existent, and that her diet mainly consists of eating foods that her children didn’t finish. It ain’t all glamour and kids can drive dear ol’ Mom to drink.
As one mother explained with a measure of levity at the 2020 “Symposium for New Mothers” in New York: “The most expensive part of having kids is all the wine you have to drink!”
Humor is essential in the life of mothers, as mental health experts emphasize: “You either laugh, grin and bear it,” or they measure you for a straitjacket. So if you’re going to talk hard science in child rearing, infuse some laughs along the way to relieve pressure and anxiety. Mothers are enslaved to labors and chores and therefore must learn how to be creative in their multi-tasking skills, even when such tactics are discovered by accident: As Phyliss Diller testified, “The only time I ever enjoyed ironing was the day I accidentally got gin in the steam iron.” As one humorous poster on the

symposium wall has it: “Don’t forget to pick up a bottle of wine for Mom. After all, as a toddler going through your ‘terrible threes,’ you may have been the reason she took up drinking in the first place!” SHOCKING WORLDWIDE PHENOMENON: THE WORD “MAMA” IS UNIVERSAL! One of the world’s most shocking and mystifying phenomena – and almost entirely unknown to the average person – is that virtually all babies born around the planet say the same word: “Mama” as infants.
This is astonishing in light of the fact that there is an estimated 7,000 different languages and dialects around the world, along with their own written languages. That the word “Mama” remains virtually the same in its application, basic spelling, and pronunciation in so many thousands of various languages is absolutely mind-boggling! And puzzling!
In Afrikaan, Arabic, Armenian, Bangladesh, traditional Chinese, Dutch, Hindi, Icelandic, Italian, Indonesian, Japanese, Laotian/Lao, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Norwegian, Polish, Russian, Scottish-Gaelic, Samoan, Slovenian, Spanish, Swahili, Thailand/Tai, Yiddish, Welsh, Zulu – well, you name it -- they all have the same universal name and spelling for “Mama” which upends scales.

My friend Michael was so sick and tired of the world; of Covid-19, of the Chinese aggression, of Global Warming, BLM and the rest of the stories that our media deem important to broadcast. He drove his car into his garage and then sealed every doorway and window as best he could. He got back into his car and wound down all the windows, selected his favorite radio station and started the car. Two days later, a worried neighbor peered through his garage window and saw him in the car.
She notified the police and called for an ambulance. They broke in and pulled Michael from the car. A little sip of water and surprisingly he was in perfect condition, but his Tesla had a dead battery.
the apple cart for linguists to now see a new global range for the word’s origins!
And if a world language does not have the exact spelling match for “Mama” – it’s still pretty darn close to it, such as with French (maman), German (mutter), Filipino (si mama), French (maman), Korean (eomma), Portuguese (mamae), Swahili (ma), and Vietnamese (ma), etc.
With your computer, everyone can log onto a universal language translation mode and type in the English word “Mama” and then scroll down to virtually every civilized human language on Earth to see the same word “Mama” translated and replicated as – well, “Mama” in almost all the world’s different languages! Coincidence? Hardly.
That would be akin to lightning striking a million times in the very same spot in consecutive – not sporadic -- fashion!
As diverse as all these cultures were in their independent evolution, thousands of years ago, separated by continents and oceans, jungles from desert, all these strange tongues, dialects, and languages since the prehistoric epoch were independently formed to be different – except for the word “Mama.” God Makes Surprise Visit To Local Church
FAYETTEVILLE, NC— Parishioners at the First Presbyterian Church were left stunned and in awe of His glory Sunday, when the Lord God Almighty dropped by their 11 a.m. service unannounced. Our Father, the Almighty God, popped His all-powerful head into First Presbyterian Church Sunday.
Interrupting Pastor Terry Pridgen's sermon on His unending mercy, God appeared suddenly before His flock as an intense beam of white light, instantly dispersing the earthly forms of those seated in the first two pews. Sources said the remaining congregants had to avert their eyes from their Creator, whose booming celestial voice overwhelmed their worldly senses and humbled their hearts as He politely apologized for not calling first.
"I AM the God of Abraham, the LORD MOST HIGH, who brought you forth from the bondage of Egypt," God said unto church members, many of whom cowered in reverent fear of Him. "Thought I'd just pop in and see how things were going. Please, pretend like I'm not even here." The Supreme Being then thanked the choir for its "lovely introduction" and took a seat to the right of the altar.
The very synonym we use for Mother’s Day
One clue advanced by world experts who study the evolution of earlyhuman development is that one of the first utterances or sounds that all babies make is a “ma” sound and, ergo, most languages around the world have that same sound as the basis for their word for “mother” or, as in this case, “mama.”
It is poetic justice that the word “Mama” has always been with all cultures since birth, especially in light of the universal “Mother’s Day” sentiment of: “You’ve always been there for me, Mama” – which now appears to have quite a literal meaning, since time immemorial, with most every baby that was ever born!
WHICH U. S. PRESIDENT MADE MOTHER’S DAY A NATIONAL HOLIDAY? A Woodrow Wilson B Franklin D. Roosevelt C John F. Kennedy Correct answer is “A” for Woodrow Wilson. Although Mother’s Day traces its roots back thousands of years to ancient cultures, it was in 1914 America that President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother’s Day to be held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor motherhood.

According to wholly repentant witnesses, who were scarcely able to look upon the Alpha and Omega, much less conceive of the enormity of His Might, God did not speak again for the entirety of the service, but was seen nodding approvingly during the Nicene Creed. Attendees reportedly did not ask the One Who Made Them Flesh why He had chosen to visit their small parish, though some suspected the church's new electric organ might have had something to do with it.
"I don't think anyone knew He was coming," said churchgoer Ron Stiehl, adding that, for once, he was happy his wife dragged him to church. "At least it seemed that way when He started walking toward us and everyone was yelling their heads off like it was Judgment Day." "Turns out the King of Kings was just making the rounds," Stiehl continued. "I thought He'd be taller."
While God did not reveal unto man a reason for His visit—nor did He, in His great wisdom, offer to pay for the six stained-glass windows that shattered from the awesome power of His presence—the Almighty sat among His followers for the last 35 minutes of the Sunday service, as well as the free coffee and pastries that followed. Sources said that Our Father sat

In 1905, after the death of her mother, Anna Marie Jarvis began her fight to have Mother’s Day recognized as a national holiday. She finally succeeded with President Wilson’s official approbation. Whether one is president, king, or rich tycoon – we all had a mother. And for the most part, we all came home in diapers. Such humble beginnings should never be forgotten. Nor the sacrifice ours mothers made. In later years, when you’re a mother, you will learn how to balance your life.
As journalist and author Katie Bingham Smith says: “Some days I do yoga and don’t yell at the kids. Some days I scream at them while eating cake over the sink. It’s called balance in life.” EVEN THOUGH ANNA JARVIS FOUNDED MOTHER’S DAY, SHE LATER PROTESTED AGAINST IT, FOR WHAT REASON? A She disagreed on the selected date for Mother’s Day. Day became too commercialized. Although Jarvis was successful in founding Mother’s Day in America, she became resentful of the overcommercialization of the holiday and expressed that was never her intention.
By the early 1920s, Hallmark and other companies had started selling Mother’s Day cards. Other businesses joined by exploiting flowers, candy, and other gift items in the name of Mother’s Day celebrations. Greatly offended over her brainchild being commercialized, Jarvis emphasized that the true meaning of Mother’s Day should be the sentiment, not profit.
As a result, she organized boycotts of Mother’s Day and even threatened to issue lawsuits against the companies exploiting her special day which she had established in loving memory of her mother. In 1925, she was arrested for protesting and disturbing the peace. Mother’s Day founder, Anna Marie Jarvis, saw the seedy part of the adage: “Be careful what you wish for. You never know who will be listening.”
In the case of Jarvis, it was the profiteering commercial businesses that were listening, and who turned Mother’s Day into a cash cow! WORLD SATELLITES & TELECOMMUNICATION NET-

Due to recent CDC precautions from the Covid19 pandemic, this year’s Mother’s Day is expected to break all records in volume of phone calls! Traditionally, more phone calls are made worldwide during Mother’s Day than at any other day of the year, and in America that includes Christmas, Valentine’s Day, New Year’s Eve, or Thanksgiving Day!
America expects to complete over 130 million phone calls on Mother’s Day 2021. (Note: Many foreign countries have adopted the same day and month for Mother’s Day as the United States so worldwide volume of calls will be unprecedented this year also! Part of this increase of calls is due to ongoing CDC restrictions.) Mother’s Day is also the busiest time of the year for restaurants, flower shops, and beauty shops and spas.

Man About Town
When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were. When they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning.... Uphill... Barefoot... BOTH ways...yadda, yadda, yadda
And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on my kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!
But now that I'm over the ripe old age of eighty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia! And I hate to say it, but you kids today, you don't know how good you've got it!

Palomar Medical Centers Receive National Recognition
Palomar Medical Center Poway receives “A” grade from Leapfrog and Palomar Medical Center Escondido named to Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals 2021
Palomar Health’s two medical centers are being recognized for delivering high-quality medical care from separate national organizations. Palomar Medical Center Poway received an “A” grade from the Leapfrog Group for protecting patient safety and Palomar Medical Center Escondido was named to Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals 2021 list. “These awards show Palomar Health is a national leader in providing safe, top-level healthcare,” said Sheila Brown, Palomar Health’s chief operations officer. “North County residents have the best doctors, receive the best treatments and stay at the best hospitals
1) I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have the Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog! 2) There was no email! We had to actually write somebody a letter with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox, and it would take like a week to get there! Stamps were 10 cents! 3) Child Protective Services didn't care if our parents beat us. As a matter of fact, the parents of all my friends also had permission to kick our butts! Nowhere was safe! 4) There were no iTunes! If you wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the record store and shoplift it yourself! 5) Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio, and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up! There were no CD players! We had tape decks in our car or those great 8 track players. We'd play our favorite tape and "eject" it when finished, and then the tape would come undone rendering it useless. Cause, hey, that's how we rolled, Baby! Dig? 6) We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called, they got a busy signal, that's it! 7) There weren't any freakin' cell phones either. If you left the house, you just didn't make a damn call or receive one. You actually had to be out of touch with your "friends". OH MY GOSH ! Think of the horror... not being in touch with some-

one 24/7! And then there's TEXTING. Yeah, right. Please! You kids have no idea how annoying you are. And we didn't have fancy Caller ID either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your parents, your boss, your bookie, your drug dealer, the collection agent... you just didn't know! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister! 9) We didn't have any fancy PlayStation or Xbox video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like 'Space Invaders' and 'Asteroids'. Your screen guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination!!! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen.. Forever! And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE! 10) You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your butt and walk over to the TV to change the channel! NO REMOTES! Oh, no, what's the world coming to?! 11) There was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying? We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little rats! 12) And we didn't have microwaves. If we wanted to heat something up, we had to use the stove! Imagine that!

Mother’s Day Cont. from Page 3
English, the translation is the same for all mothers of young children: “Silence is golden. Unless you have kids, then silence is just suspicious.” COMMUNIST CHINA CONFESSES ITS SECRET LOVE-AFFAIR WITH AMERICA’S MOTHER’S DAY VERSION! Never in a million years did we expect to hear such a Communist country’s secret confession to the world!
Proving once again the miraculous powers of a mother’s love, and its towering ability to sometimes heal and unite a diverse world as with a unified global Mother’s Day observance.
China’s shocking and unexpected decision to suddenly emulate America in this regard caused such a global shockwave of disbelief, that China felt compelled to explain itself through its own state-run official Communist Government newspaper, The People’s Daily publication (translated here): “Despite originating in the United States, the people of China accept (Americas’ version of) Mother’s Day holiday without hesitation because it is in line with our country’s traditional ethics – respect for the elderly and filial piety towards parents.” That still did not explain why China agreed to select the exact day and month as America for observing Mother’s Day. Which to many political observers, was a most miraculous gesture! Especially in light of the fact that most countries arbitrarily selected different days to observe Mother’s Day than America. But Communist China did not do that – they chose to align themselves alongside of the Good Ol’ U. S. of A – and openly confess to it. Sadly, such milestone facts are seldom – if ever – reported in our news media. There is an old Chinese proverb which reveals a mother’s unconditional love for her child, translated here: “There is only one pretty child in the world. And every mother has it.”
MANY COUNTRIES JOINED CHINA IN ADOPTING SAME DAY & MONTH AS AMERICA’S “MOTHER’S DAY”! Today, many countries around the world have followed suit by also accepting America’s 2nd Sunday in May to celebrate Mother’s Day, such as Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Italy and dozens of other countries around the planet! Point being: America should be most proud that our Mother’s Day has been selected by so many other countries, and cultures, and diverse people of color – despite our many differences. Proving time and again: that dear ol’ Mom is truly an American (international) superhero! THROUGH TOIL, TEARS &

HARDSHIP OF MOTHERHOOD, HUMOR OFTEN IS THEIR SAVING GRACE. Many of the world’s greatest thinkers and philosophers have tried to capture the relentless hardships, sacrifices, and quizzical upside-down world of child-rearing. One such eloquent attempt was as follows: “Children are like crazy, drunken small people in your house.”
As a young teen growing up, I remember seeing a plague at my friend’s house years ago, where his mother had raised six hyperactive kids.
The plague showed a true-life photo of his very tired-looking mother (who honestly looked ten years older than she really was) along with her touching inscription: “I love all my children equally. Except for the one that sleeps . . . I love that one more.” THE MYSTERIOUS & UNCHARTED WORLD OF MOTHERHOOD. Unless you’re a mother, you may have been guilty of that most unpardonable sin of asking what many door-to-door survey people ask: “Do you work, or do you just stay home and take care of the kids?”
Nothing is more insulting – as if raising kids were not a full-time, arduous job!
I was 6-years-old when a pollster asked my Mom that very same question, in real life. I’ll never forget the look on my Mom’s face that day.
It was the same exact expression on her face when she used to change diapers. Luckily for the man, my Mom -who bore the rich Irish name of Molly – was a very peaceful and passive individual.
drive 7 hours east with the kids in the car and then turn around and come back.” My Dad seemed to understand and we did just that. One comedian observed that all moms strive for perfection and therefore should not feel guilty for every candy bar they have secretly eaten in a closet, frankly because they didn’t want to share.
Or all the dirty laundry they buried in their back yard. In an act of desperation in trying to keep up with the ever-mounting chores.
SPECIAL DEDICATION TO ALL OUR READERS: You didn’t think we’d forget you on your most cherished Mother’s Day, did you? This special edition of The Paper is dedicated to all moms everywhere, who comprise our valued readership. Everyone needs to take home this special issue of The Paper. The contents will make her truly aware of how mothers have shaped the world around us, since ancient times. How nations, like Communist China and Russia have joined hands with America’s version and style of celebrating American mothers! American mothers comprise wives, grandmothers, sisters, aunts, friends, and are found everywhere from the U. S. military, medical professions, hospitals, schools, colleges, law enforcement, clergy, workforce, homes, everyday friends, well – American mothers are everywhere in this great land of ours.
May God richly bless our American flag, our sacred country, U. S. military, seniors, and of course: all our American mothers: HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO ALL!
Being a mother is the hardest and most important job in the world.
Think about it: Mothers are in charge of literally raising the future of the world.
Sometimes mothers need “time off,” in order to maintain their sanity. After all, their job is never-ending, like 24/7 at the hospital trauma ward. It’s not that moms don’t love us all the time – they do. But, they are only made of flesh and blood and, therefore, have limitations.
All moms occasionally require some “free time” away from the kids, just so that moms are not found standing out on a ledge somewhere. Once, when I was a tiny child, I clearly remember Dad asking Mom what she’d like on Mother’s Day.
Mom just said with a very tired expression on her face and a very weak voice: “I just want you to

PROBLEM SOLVED BY CHRISTOPHER ELLIOTT
Google promised to replace my Pixel 3A. It's been three months! Tom Kenny's Pixel 3A phone stops working. Google promised to replace it, but stalls for three months. How can he get a new phone?
Q: I bought a Google Pixel 3A phone last year. In October, while the phone was still under warranty, it stopped working. Google asked me to return the phone. I did. I've been waiting for a replacement phone since then. In November, Google said it received the Pixel. A representative assured me in writing that I would receive a replacement in 5 to 10 business days. I've written to Google several times since then to find out where the phone is. A manager said that they were having "inventory issues." I'd like to get a working phone back or a refund for the $400 I spent on the Pixel 3A. Please help! -- Tom Kenny, Allentown, Pa. A: Tom, by the time you contacted me, three months had passed. Three months without a phone is unimaginable for most people. I can't go five minutes without checking mine. (Disclosure: I'm a loyal Google customer and own a Pixel 5.) So I feel your pain.
Google should have kept you in the loop every step of the way and sent you a replacement phone immediately, and at least within the written promise of 5 to 10 business days. Instead, it sent you form letters -and excuses. The final response from a manager, claiming Google was having inventory problems, was an insult. I mean, it was the holidays, so of course they were having inventory problems. Everyone was having inventory problems. But that's not your problem; it's the company's. Instead of telling you why it couldn't get you the phone on time, maybe it should have taken a minute to explain what it was doing to help you get a phone faster. In a situation like this, where Google didn't have any new Pixel 3As to send you, it might have considered replacing your broken phone with a newer model that it did have in stock. Or it could have offered you a full refund, and you could have bought a different phone. But leaving you without a mobile device for three months is inexcusable.
I list the names, numbers and email addresses of Google's customer service managers on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org. A brief, polite email to one of them might have helped retrieve your replacement Pixel 3A faster. Your case is a classic example of corporate tone-deafness. Rather than fixing a problem -- sending

you a new phone -- Google thought it could keep you happy by giving you the reasons for not complying To show it the error of its ways, I propose we take the manager's phones away for three months. Let's see how they do!

Can I get a refund for my nonrefundable hotel after the pandemic?
After the COVID-19 outbreak, Noemi Freeman has to cancel her trip to Greece. Does this mean she loses the $592 she paid for her hotel? Q: I booked a room at the Hotel Tzekos Villas in Santorini, Greece, last year through Hotels.com. The reservation was nonrefundable. Due to the virus, we were unable to leave the U.S.
I called and emailed several times to cancel and get a refund or a voucher for a future stay. Neither Hotels.com nor the Hotel Tzekos Villas would refund our money. After calling several times and receiving no response, we disputed the charge with our Chase Visa Sapphire Reserve. The credit card issuer sided with Hotels.com. Can you help me get our $592 back or a credit? -- Noemi Freeman, Aventura, Fla. A: Hotels.com should have helped you with a refund. After all, Europe was closed to Americans at the time you were supposed to visit. And if the hotel and the booking site couldn't assist you, then your credit card should have been able to help with a chargeback. It didn't. What's going on here? First, your case is one of hundreds of thousands of refund requests. It took weeks, and often months for travel companies to sift through all of them. Yours was also a complicated case, because you paid for part of the hotel with a Hotels.com gift card. It looks as if you pushed forward with a credit card dispute relatively soon after your cancellation. I understand that you wanted your money back, but once you initiate a chargeback, it limits some of your other options.
One of the options would have been a brief, polite email to a Hotels.com executive (Expedia owns Hotels.com). I list all of them on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org. Ultimately, the problem was the type of hotel room you booked: a prepaid, nonrefundable reservation. When you agree to one of those, you're saying that come hell or high

The Banker Who Saved America
One of the important entrepreneurs who was key to building America was John Pierpont Morgan, New York financier, who orchestrated the federal government’s financial system, as well as created the giant corporations such as U.S. Steel and General Electric through his many acquisitions and consolidations. John Pierpont Morgan Sr., born April 17, 1837, was an American banker who dominated corporate finance and industrial consolidation in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Morgan played a key role in the financial reorganization and formation of such well known giants like General Electric, U.S. Steel, International Harvester and communications conglomerate American Telephone &Telegraph (AT&T).
During the early part of the 20th century at the height of Morgan's career, he and his partners had financial investments in many large corporations and had significant influence over the nation's high finance as well as U.S. presidents and members of Congress. He directed the banking coalitions that stopped the national financial “Panic of 1907;” was the leading financier of the so-called “Progressive Era,” and his dedication to efficiency and modernization helped transform much of today’s American business. Yet, he was dubbed a “robber baron” because he profited in the collapse of earlier businesses such as Westinghouse. Morgan learned at an early age how to make money. At 26, during the American Civil War, in an incident known as the “Hall Carbine Affair,” Morgan financed the purchase of 5,000 rifles from a U.S. Army arsenal at $3.50 each, which he then resold to an Army field general for $22 each.
Morgan’s process of taking over troubled businesses to reorganize them became known as "Morganizations." He reorganized businesses in order to return them to profitability. Morgan’s reputation as a banker and financier also helped bring interest from investors to the many businesses he had taken over. At the depths of the “Panic of 1893,” by 1895 the Federal Treasury was nearly out of gold. Morgan had put forward a plan for the federal government to buy gold from his European banks. Morgan
came up with a plan to use an old Civil War law allowing him to sell 3.5 million ounces of gold directly to the U.S. Treasury restoring the nation’s financial surplus in exchange for a 30-year bond issue. The episode saved the U.S., and to maintain the status quo in business, Morgan, steel magnet Andrew Carnegie, and railroad mogul John D. Rockefeller, along with some Wall Street bankers donated heavily to Republican candidate William McKinley, who was elected in 1896 and re-elected again in 1900. By 1900, Morgan’s financial firm was one of the most powerful banking houses in the world, focused especially on reorganizations and consolidations. After financing the creation of the Federal Steel Company, Morgan merged it in 1901 with the Carnegie Steel Company and several other steel and iron businesses to form the giant United States Steel Corporation.
“The Panic of 1907” was a financial crisis that almost crippled the American economy. Major New York banks were on the verge of bankruptcy and there was no mechanism to rescue them, until Morgan stepped in to help resolve the crisis. Treasury Secretary George B. Cortelyou earmarked $35 million of federal money to deposit in New York banks. Morgan then met with the nation's leading financiers in his New York mansion, where he forced them to devise a plan to meet the crisis. Morgan organized a team of bank and trust executives which re-directed money between banks, secured further international lines of credit, and bought up the plummeting stocks of healthy corporations. In 1913, realizing that in a future national crisis there would unlikely to be another J.P. Morgan for a rescue, banking and political leaders devised a plan that resulted in the creation of today’s Federal Reserve System. But a similar crises occurred 100 years later. In 2008, the J.P. Morgan-Chase bank emerged as one of the world’s largest banks, but that particular financial catastrophe, which saw the downfall of Lehman Brothers investment group, proved that no bank is “too large to fail.” On March 31, 1913, J.P. Morgan died in Rome, Italy at the age of 75. He left his fortune to his namesake, John Pierpont Morgan ,Jr. The Morgan senior was estimated to have left a fortune at "only" $80 million, which prompted fellow socalled “Robber Baron” John D. Rockefeller to say: "… and to think, he wasn't even a rich man."
The 19th century “robber barons” included Morgan, oil giant John D. Rockefeller, auto builder Henry Ford, steel magnet Andrew Carnegie, and railroad mogul Cornelius (the Commodore) Vanderbilt. Together, these men truly did financially and industrially build America with Morgan providing the necessary financial and organizational “glue” that held many of the nation’s key conglomerates together.

Priorities for the future
As the constitutionally mandated June 15th deadline for passing a balanced budget nears, discussions in Sacramento about spending priorities are ramping up.
California is facing a variety of challenges. First of all, we must get the economy up and running again, and we can use our budget surplus to help bring back jobs. Through additional investments in the Small Business Grant Program, and by targeting surplus revenues to reduce unemployment insurance debt for employers, we can get people back to work.
Our streets and roads are increasingly inadequate – we have a $6.1 billion annual shortfall to maintain our highways over the next decade. California’s wet and dry cycles will continue, and we need to invest in more water storage and conveyance facilities, improve local drinking water systems and flood control projects. With wildfires an ever-present threat, we need to make investments in better vegetation management and more equipment to slow the spread of fires, reduce their severity, save lives, protect the environment and reduce property damage.

true faith, but afternoon sightings of the Lord at two other Fayetteville churches, as well as one synagogue, have cast doubt on that theory. "God said He just wanted to see what we were up to," Pastor Pridgen said. "This is His house, after all. He can drop in whenever He wants."
"Although, you'd think an all-knowing deity unbound by time and space would be able to give us some warning so we could at least put a bulletin in the church newsletter," the pastor added. "Not that I'm complaining or anything. All praise be to God. Is He still hanging around the parking lot?" •••• A giraffe's coffee would be cold by the time it reached the bottom off its throat. . Pastor Richard Huls (Retired) WHY CIVIC CLUBS?
Often, when visiting other countries and cities, I see signs stating that Kiwanis, Rotary, Lions, and other clubs are holding meetings in hotels, restaurants, or in a community hall. If you are, or have been a member of such a club, ever wonder what these movements are all about? These clubs are civic organizations made up of volunteers, who have the community in their hearts and minds to do whatever in their capacity they can to improve lives and property. I am happy to be a part of such a club called Kiwanis. It is made up of men and women, who have a passion to serve. This passion takes them beyond a traditional church role of being a part of a congregation. It moves them to an awareness of where they live, sharing in areas often neg-

We need to invest more in healthcare, including reducing the cost of medical education, and providing more licensing options and incentives for health care workers to serve in low-income, rural and underserved areas. We need more affordable housing and we must streamline regulations to increase housing supply. We also need to ensure that law enforcement and the courts have the resources needed to enforce laws safely and equitably for all Californians. And our kids need to get back into the classroom.
These are just a few of the issues that will be addressed by the state budget. Together with members of my Caucus, I am committed to working in a bi-partisan manner to get the economy back on track, the kids back in school, to rebuilding California’s infrastructure and protecting our citizens. Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

Lest our readers think this is without spiritual principals, perhaps it best fulfills the second great commandment to love our neighbor as we love ourselves.
I have been a member of a local Kiwanis Club for years and find great satisfaction in the six objects, which remind all members what we are about. They are to encourage and live by spiritual values, the golden rule, the best of character in business, a highly developed citizenship, lasting friendships, and an honorable character, which is mirrored in society. Unfortunately, many in our society do not join these clubs today. I do want to emphasize in this article that these clubs provide invaluable services for the community. It is a safe and charitable way to get involved with great people and have fun doing it. Pastor Huls

Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” McNamara
Greetings Escondido, I’m going to ask you this week to do a little research on Single Use Plastics. If you are not familiar, single-use plastics are goods that are made primarily from fossil fuel–based chemicals (petrochemicals) and are meant to be disposed of right after use—often, in mere minutes. Single-use plastics are most commonly used for packaging and serviceware, such as bottles, wrappers, straws, and bags. Most of us will think, so what, I recycle, and I do too, but here is the problem, and it is a big problem, most of the plastic is not recycled. Depending on your source, the amount of estimated unrecycled plastic is as high as 90%. If you look at the recycle symbol which is a triangle with an arrow on each side and a number inside it you will find there are 7 categories representing “different” types of plastic. The problem is only categories 1 and 2 can be recycled and even then, many of them are not which exacerbates the problem. Why, it’s actually cheaper to use “virgin” plastic. So even the plastic that can be recycled isn’t, hence the 90% number.
The problem gets worse. Plastics really don’t break-down like paper might, but rather they just break-up. Over time, sun and heat slowly turn plastics into smaller and smaller pieces until they eventually become what are known as microplastics. And you guessed it, those microplastics are being found everywhere. We eat, drink and inhale them. And yes, it is a growing health hazard. Next week some easy things we can do to mitigate the problem. Stay informed, Be Kind, Remember your neighbor, and Stay safe! Semper Fi, Mac, Paul P. McNamara, Mayor of Escondido

The average American home owner has a couple of cars, each with fifty to one hundred computers and another thirty to fifty in the electrical devices scattered throughout the house. Most of these computers go quietly about their business without bothering you. Some of them collect data through their sensors and present you with alternatives so that you can take action.
Paul & Nome Van Middlesworth, The Computer Factory
www. thecomputerfactory.net "San Diego's Best Computer Store 2015-2020" Union Tribune readers poll
You probably own over 100 computers!
To most of us the word “computer” brings to mind the PCs (personal computers) that we use every day (notebooks, towers, desktops and all-in-ones). Prior to the beginning of the PC age marked by the release of the IBM PC in 1981, the word “computer” conjured images of large climate controlled computer rooms humming with mainframes, disc and tape drives and clattering tractor feed printers. Raw data was hard wired into the computer room from a network of dumb terminals. Today computers are everywhere.
In addition to the hundred or so computers in the home and driveway, the average American also has eight to ten “connected devices”. Connected devices are phones tablets and PCs that connect to the internet. Connected devices overlap in most capabilities. Phones, tablets, notebooks and desktop PCs for the most part have ways to accomplish the functions and applications of one another, but there are some functions they do not share. A desktop PC has very limited mobility and cannot be used “on the fly.”. Smart phones have infinite mobility, but with restrictive input methods and small screens they are unsuitable as workstations. Tablets and notebooks come somewhere in the middle.
For a general purpose home workstation a desktop/tower is a perfect solution. Many of our commercial style “refurbs are “convertibles” meaning that they can be used as a desktop or tower. The space saving advantage of this feature is that the monitor can sit on top of the computer. A WiFi dongle and a wireless keyboard and mouse complete the
The Appraiser’s Corner Bowling
I recently read that a 95-year old man rolled a 300 game, a perfect score. That was incredible in itself, but it was his tenth perfect game. That news piece brought back memories of my futile attempts when I was much younger to even get half that score. However, I do remember rolling around a 167 once or twice, and saying to myself that I would never score that high again. I was right.
But I must admit that bowling is indeed an activity (sport, game) for the entire family, and for all ages. Just stick your fingers through the holes and let the ball fly. Of course, if you have long fingernails you need to be particularly careful that you don’t break them.
But how did such a popular sport originate? Who came up with the idea of the activity that has evolved through the years that we nowadays know as bowling.
Well, the answer is not known. In the 1930s, a British anthropologist Sir Flinders Petrie discovered some objects in an Egyptian grave that resembled a crude form of bowling. So possibly the Egyptian started bowling. However, there is evidence that some form of bowling was played in England in the 1300s
during the reign of King Edward III, and later when King Henry VIII ruled.
Most likely, English, German, and Dutch settlers brought some kind of bowling to America. The author Washington Irving mentioned that Rip Van Winkle awoke to the sound of “crashing ninepins”. New York City’s Battery area was probably the location of the country’s first lawn bowling. That area in New York City, now called Bowling Green, is in the financial area. In the United States, the popularity of bowling increased tremendously in the 1800s, and bowling clubs were common. In 1895, the American Bowling Congress was formed for men, and in 1917 the Women’s International Bowling Congress was started. Bowling balls, which have been made of very hard wood, started to be made of rubber. In 1914, the Brunswick Corporation marketed the mineralite ball made of rubber.
Finally, in 1951, the American Machine and Foundry Company (AMF) acquired the patent rights to the automatic pinspotter. However, what really brought bowling to American households was the advent of none other than television.
set-up. The desktop workstation is a perfect solution if you already have a decent size monitor. If you don’t already have a monitor, consider and All-in One workstation. The convenience of having a “sit-down” workstation with a large screen and easy to use mouse and keyboard make these refurb workstations perfect for school work, banking, shopping, letter writing, video streaming, zoom meetings, Skype, or just Internet browsing. We also include the Professional version of Office with Excel, Word, Power Point Outlook and Access. At this writing we have over fifty Windows 10 “refurbs” ready to go. NBC first started televising “Championship Bowling”, which was followed by “Make That Spare”, “Celebrity Bowling”, as well as “Bowling For Dollars”. Bowlers such as Don Carter, Dick Weber (and later his son Pete), and Billy Welu, among others, were seen on television by millions of Americans, and Chris Schenkel broadcasting talent became known. It is estimated that approximately 95 million people enjoy bowling in about 90 countries across the world. Nowadays there is worldwide competition under the auspices of the Federation Nationale des Quilleurs (FIQ).

But none other than Babe Ruth tried his hand at bowling as well. This is evidenced by a bowling scorecard that he signed. The scorecard clearly shows that he rolled games of 196 and 191. Not bad for anyone. Actually, the scorecard was signed three times by Ruth, and sold for $2629. Bowling is certainly a game for everyone, except maybe for those who have long fingernails.
Collectors have been quick to look for bowling collectibles as well, notably of celebrities. For example, the bowling ball and bag that were used by Carroll O’Connor in his role as Archie Bunker in the immensely popular “All in the Family” television show were auctioned. The ball is actually monogrammed with the initials “A.B.”. The items sold for nearly $1500. Not surprisingly, baseball great Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals got into the act himself. As St. Louis was regarded as the bowling capital for many years, undoubtedly Musial hung around with some of the great

Re-envi sioned Corrido r Wins Award
Vista’s Paseo Santa Fe Street Improvement Project received the American Public Works Project of the Year award.
The project created a low impact green street along a mile of South Santa Fe Avenue between Vista Village and Civic Center Drive. This resulted in a two decades old vision coming to fruition with a pedestrian-friendly, beautifully landscaped thoroughfare through the downtown core. Our new Paseo Santa Fe corridor creates a sense of place and has revitalized and enhanced downtown. The recently established street enhancements will drive other downtown uses and benefit local businesses and the community alike. This honor recognizes a community improvement project, which turned a blighted road, into an award winning green and complete street!

water, you'll be there. And if you aren't, the hotel can keep your money.
Travel insurance might have helped you recover some of your losses. But I think Hotels.com could have done better, too. I've heard from other travelers who said Hotels.com took good care of them during the pandemic by pushing for refunds or vouchers. It doesn't seem fair to make you eat that $592. I also think Chase Sapphire could have fought harder for you during the dispute. Those pricey credit cards advertise themselves as the traveler's best friend, but they don't always come through for you when you need them. After months of back and forth, I contacted Hotels.com on your behalf. The company refunded all of your money.

Women Build On Adventure Race - Women Build On is officially underway for the San Diego Habitat for Humanity as of the end of April. We were joined on the job sites by several Women Builders who helped us kick things off right. We are introducing an all-new Adventure Race! After a year of attending virtual events and "pivoting" our hearts out, we hope you are as excited as we are to ease our way back to a new normal — that means welcoming you back to Habitat job sites and to Women Build. We are also taking your health, safety, and level of comfort very seriously. That’s why we are offering the Adventure Race as an option to our Women Builders for the first time ever!

Helping Our Restaurants
San Diego County restaurants have suffered greatly over the last year. We’ve all seen the out-of-business signs on many of our favorite local establishments and I want to make sure we do all we can to help those holding on. I have proposed to my colleagues on the Board of Supervisors that we waive all restaurant permit fees for the upcoming year. Before the pandemic, there were 8,131 restaurants with over 126,400 workers in San Diego County. We know many of these employees lost their jobs and some restaurants are, sadly, closed permanently. We need to do all we can to help move forward and get people back to work. According to the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), restaurants were among the hardest hit early in the pandemic during the first week in April 2020, with foot traffic down between 60% and 77%. As of January 2021, with the San Diego region in the purple tier, activity at various businesses remained down, between 26% to 61% percent below pre-COVID-19 level. 2.7 million jobs were lost due to the pandemic and 56% still
remain jobless.
While there is light at the end of the tunnel with the removal of COVID19 restrictions on June 15th, many restaurants will never be able to recover from the last year.
As we continue to make our road to recovery, I believe it is my personal responsibility to do all I can to preserve our small business community, which provides thousands of jobs in our region. Restaurants supply so much more than food, from jobs to a sense of community. I will do all I can to help them survive!
