Volume 51 - No. 20

Morning. I’m drinking my coffee when his photo pops up in my cellphone memories. And I’m thrown three years backward. I remember it all too well.
There I am, watching him. He sits on the steps of the Shell Station. A backpack beside him. His skin is rawhide. His beard is white.
His name is Buck. He’s from North Carolina. He says he completed two tours in Vietnam. The Paper - 760.747.7119

He’s not here begging, he’s resting his feet.
“My old feet hurt more’n they used to,” says Buck. “Hard getting old, buddy.”
There is a half-smoked cigar next to him. He dug this used cigar from an ashtray. It still has life in it, he says. He’s sipping coffee. “First cup’a joe I had in a week. Fella gave me a quarter a few minutes ago. Piled my coins together to buy me a cup.”
A quarter.
When Buck went inside to buy it, there were only cold dregs left in the pot. He asked the cashier if it were possible to brew a fresh pot. She told him to get lost. “But I’m paying for it,” he insisted. She escorted him to the door.
So, he’s drinking dregs for which he paid full price—for which he is grateful.
There are holes in his shoes. He

found these sneakers in a sportinggood-store dumpster. Buck estimates he’s put nearly eight hundred miles on them. Who knows if he’s exaggerating or not. Buck has a flare for the dramatic. Still, his bloody toes poke through the fronts. His middle toenail is missing. Buck explains, “God says, ‘Don't worry what you’ll eat, drink, or wear.’ And I believe it. But it's hard sometimes. ‘Specially when you ain’t eaten and you don’t have

[cussword] to wear.”
So I walk inside the gas station on a mission. I ask the aforementioned cashier to brew a fresh pot of coffee—I tell her it’s for me. I am very polite about it. She smiles and says, “Sure, sweetie.” Ain't she sweet.
I buy a hot cup, an armful of snacks, and a pack of Swisher Unsweetened Mini-Cigars. I give them to Buck on the sidewalk, and I tuck a bill into his hand. I wish I had something bigger, but I don't.
You would think helping someone down on their luck would make you feel good all over. Instead, it just makes me feel like I can’t do nearly enough. Buck starts crying.
And the truth is, I’m embarrassed to even be telling you all this. Because this story isn’t about me—it’s about Buck. Buck says with glazed eyes, “Did you know that I see God in you?”
And now I’m the one who has some major eye-glazing going on. I stumble over my own words. All I

I'm a bumbling fool. The words sounded better in my head than they sounded coming out of my mouth. They seem so… Lightweight. He smiles. He stands to walk away. His big backpack must weigh eighty pounds. “Going to Walmart,” he says. “Gon’ buy me some new shoes. Gon’ get me a hot pizza, man. Yessir, just saw God on the street corner.” And he's gone.
I’m a middle-aged American. I’ve never known hunger. I’ve never not had a Sheetrock ceiling to cover my head. In many ways I'm spoiled. I'm lazy. I'm selfish. And sometimes, I get so lost in my own selfcentered world that I can't see.
He sleeps in the open air, counting stars, covered by his military-surplus blanket. He prays for heaven to feed him every day. And somehow heaven does. He is a man who people overlook because it's easier that way. A man who asked me for nary a thing. Mister Buck, sir. Today, you met a young redhead who happened to have a few extra dollars in his pocket. A guy who wishes he could do more for an American serviceman, but is too ignorant to know how sometimes.
So you were wrong, Buck. You didn't see God on a street corner today. I did.
Did she say San Diego? Carolee was already somewhat on her own, but hadn't gone far; she was living in a rented townhouse near us in the Washington, D.C. area. "San Diego?" I repeated stupidly. "You mean like in California?" "Yeah. California."
I sat down. She'd never been to San Diego. I'd never been to San Diego. I didn't know anyone who'd ever been to San Diego. I wasn't even quite sure exactly where in California San Diego was.
I glanced through the kitchen window at the muddy snow that had recently immobilized our area for the third time that winter, shivered, and pulled my sweater tighter.
I just met someone. An invisible someone. A man who—despite whatever his problems may be— isn't lost at all. A man who knows things, different truths than I will ever know.
men's bones. Then they mostly use string, I think. Why did God give you your mother and not some other mom? 1.. We're related. 2. God knew she likes me a lot more than other people's moms like me. What kind of little girl was your mom? 1.. My Mom has always been my mom and none of that other stuff. 2. I don't know because I wasn't there, but my guess would be pretty bossy. 3. They say she used to be nice. What did mom need to know about dad before she married him? 1.. His last name. 2. She had to know his background. Like is he a crook? Does he get drunk on beer? 3. Does he make at least $800 a year? Did he say NO to drugs and YES to chores? Why did your mom marry your dad? 1.. My dad makes the best spaghetti in the world. And my Mom eats a lot. 2. She got too old to do anything else with him. 3. My grandma says that Mom didn't have her thinking cap on. Who's the boss at your house? 1.. Mom doesn't want to be boss, but she has to because dad's such a goofball. 2. Mom. You can tell by room inspection. She sees the stuff under the bed. 3. I guess Mom is, but only because she has a lot more to do than dad. What's the difference between
Many years ago my phone rang. My twenty-six-year-old daughter, Carolee, was excited. "Mom, I think I'll move to San Diego."
"I checked my office's website and they have a branch there," she said, her voice getting dreamy. "It looks so pretty in pictures."
But.
Yes, he smokes secondhand cigars. But he also sees mankind. He sees us at our most charitable. And he sees us at our worst every time we tell him to get lost.

Moms work at work and work at home and dads just go to work at work. 2. Moms know how to talk to teachers without scaring them. 3. Dads are taller & stronger, but moms have all the real power cause that's who you got to ask if you want to sleep over at your friend's. 4. If you could change one thing about your mom, what would it be? 1.. She has this weird thing about me keeping my room clean. I'd get rid of that. 2. I'd make my mom smarter. There is no shortage of places in Valley Center that would qualify for an official government historic register. Yet, not a single home, building or site has ever been recognized on any local, regional or federal government official list of sites, buildings, structures, or objects deemed worthy of preservation for their historic significance. Only signs reading "Site of Historic Interest" appear on many properties, all installed by the Valley Center Historical Society. That is about to change. Lilac Ranch, also known as Rancho Lilac, is the historic Valley Center property that has welcomed a who's who of world class visitors since it was first settled in 1865. It quali-

Pacific Ocean. Was it because she had the self-confidence to try her wings? Or was it something I'd said?
I wanted to lift her back into the nest, or at the very least, tie a very long string onto her so I could pull her back when I needed to. It wasn't long, though, before my husband and I were loading her suitcases and her cat Maggie into the backseat of our car. Her arm around Maggie's travel cage, Carolee got into the car, too. She wore a coat and knit hat. She'd caught a cold. She looked so small.
The line was long at the airport. A clerk, who reminded me of a sloth blinking in the sunlight, waited on her. He was deliberate and wouldn't be hurried; she missed her flight. This was pre-9/11, and her bags made the trip without her. Fortunately, they'd also been slow picking up the cat, or Maggie would have gone on without her, too. I looked over at my daughter, expecting her to be upset. She was, but not like I'd thought she'd be. Instead, she was angry, pacing like a fluffed-up chick. "Here. Watch Maggie," she said. "I'll be right back." She handed me the cat carrier and marched over to
U.N. Ambassador Irving Salomon welcomed international guests to his historic cattle ranch on Lilac Road.
Since 2011, Lilac Ranch has been owned by the state of California (Caltrans) which acquired the property under an Environmental Mitigation exchange program. A complete archive on the property is maintained at the Valley Center History Museum.

the ticketing supervisor. They had a long, animated discussion. My little girl came back triumphant. They would put her on the next flight, and upgrade her, too. While we waited in the observation area, I took her picture. Her nose was still red from blowing it. Maggie meowed pitifully, echoing the way I felt. But as I waited and studied Carolee so that I would remember everything about her, she began to morph, like Alice in Wonderland. She got younger and younger, while the cat carrier on the table next to her grew bigger and bigger. No, she wasn't old enough to go off on her own, especially to a place where she didn't know anyone. She was just a little kid. Aside from a family trip to Chicago and one to Houston, she'd never been farther west than West Virginia.
Too soon the airline personnel took the cat and called Carolee's flight. We walked her to the gate.
"Be careful. Don't talk to strangers," I said, attempting a smile. "Mom, you worry too much. I'll be fine."
She grinned and gave her father and me a hug. Was she being brave? Was it all bravado? We hugged her back and waved as she disappeared through the door and down the ramp to her plane.
draft of the RFP is currently being circulated to interested stakeholders. One of the mandates is that within one year, the new owner must nominate the ranch to the San Diego County Historic Site Board. The State Historic Preservation Office has already concurred with Caltrans and the Valley Center Historical Society which identified 46 cultural resources potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The Historical Society worked with Caltrans for seven years during which 49 items were deemed qualified for historical status. The archive includes hundreds of items donated by Abbe Salomon Wolfsheimer-Stutz and Louis Wolfsheimer during their years of ownership. She was the daughter of Irving Salomon who was appointed by President Eisenhower to serve as an ambassador to the United Nations. During his stewardship of the onetime 2,300-acre cattle ranch, Col. Salomon hosted Eisenhower and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, among many dignitaries. When Col. Salomon acquired the ranch in 1945, he changed the name from Lilac Ranch to the more romanticsounding Rancho Lilac by which it is known today.
SANDAG has begun the process of circulating a draft of a Request for Proposal (RFP) which includes recommendations from the Valley Center Historical Society and the Valley Center Trails Assn., which requested public access and trails Then the whole gate area blurred. I reached for a Kleenex and headed for the ladies' room where I threw cold water on my eyes.
As we drove away from the airport, I pictured her sitting in the plane. She wasn't grown. She was about eight years old and the airplane seat threatened to swallow her. Her feet didn't reach the floor. And while I knew logically that the cat was in the hold, I imagined Maggie huddled under my daughter's seat, meowing sadly. They had six hours of flying ahead of them. I hoped they weren't too miserable. I needed to reach out and reassure them, but I couldn't. They were getting farther and farther away. Carolee called when she got to San Diego.
"How was your flight?" I asked, remembering the sad picture of her I'd been carrying in my head since she'd left. My daughter laughed. "It was great!" she said, enthusiastically. "I had hot towels and I ate smoked salmon! Did you know they have real silverware and dishes in first class? And they give you magazines to read? It was very elegant—the best flight I ever went on!"
I had to smile, partly at her excitement and partly at my racing, mother's imagination. I guess when a child leaves home, your point of view depends a great deal on which side of the nest you're perched.
on the now 900-acre ranch. The public last had an opportunity to visit Rancho Lilac in 2004 when the History Museum hosted a day-long tour which attracted hundreds of members and guests.
Although Valley Center lacks even a single building with official historic status, neighboring Pauma Valley holds claim to two: in 1971, the Serrano adobe, built in 1844 and still standing on SR-76, became the first site in San Diego County to be recognized by the California Historical Landmarks Commission; and, in 2016, an adobe post and beam residence on Pauma Valley Road designed by a onetime apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright received historic designation from the County Historic Site Board.

The museum is temporarily open by appointment, but anticipates returning to full schedule when the County resumes full operation of the adjoining Valley Center Library. Restaurants are Returning to “near normal”
We’ve been delighted to observe and visit area residents and note the high number of patrons out and about and enjoying good food in a comfortable dining atmosphere. Charlie’s in Escondido, for example, was packed on Mother’s Day. “Largest Mother’s Day we’ve ever had,” said Suzie Meleka, daughter of Charlie Mitich, the owner, and the overseer of operations. She and her husband, Bill, had all they could do, together with a bevy of well trained servers, to accommodate the Mother’s Day crowd . . but, they got it done!
Have you noticed the little bowl of fresh flowers at the tables and boothes at Charlie’s? That’s Suzie’s idea. She implemented it years ago
Rattlesnakes are not gene r a l l y aggressive. They actually prefer to avoid humans and pets. Give them space and they will not be a bother.
Most snakes are harmless; rattlesnakes are, in fact, venomous and can be a danger but normally only bite when handled or brushed up against while walking outdoors.
In Escondido there is a gentleman named Alex Trejo who specializes in insptections of property and removal of rattlesnakes that are found. His website is: socal-rattlesnakeremoval.com and his phone number is 619.259.7121. You may also call the Fire Department and/or Humane Society for assistance and guidance. and patrons at Charlies have come to epect it. We stopped in last Saturday for a glass of wine and a cup of soup and noticed a beautiful, fresh, red rose on our table. Nice touch.
Charlie’s is also fortunate in that they’ve been able to retain most, if not all, of their kitchen and serving staff, all of whom are well trained and long time members of the organization. Charlie’s worked hard to retain their staff and incurred substantial expense to keep things running smoothly all through the various stages of the lockdown.
Many restaurants, however, are in dire need of employees. So many who were laid off during the lockdown are reluctant to come back to work as they make almost as much on unemployment checks as they do coming back to work. Jeannette McCBrearty, co-owner of Hunsaker’s (the successor to Vincent’s on Grand Avenue) tells us she is having a terrible time finding qualified workers . . . even new hires whom she will train, are hard to come by. Entry level positions as well as senior servers and hosts/hostesses, receptionists, all are needed. That’s true for many restaurants.
We have visited several high-end restaurants and noticed low or poor service . . . that’s due to new employees who are not properly trained and/or have not had the nec-

They love mice and rats and gophers. If attacked or threatened snakes may bite but if you simply are observant and try to avoid them you are not likely to be bothered or bitten.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife tells us rattlesnakes tend to be found in diverse habitats, from coastal to desert and are widespread in California. They can be attracted to areas around homes that have heavy brush or vegetation, under wood piles where rodents may hide, as well as well manicured landcapes to bask in the sun. Best bet? Be alert and observant whenever you are outdoors walking. Extension Granted to Keep San Pasqual Academy Open

essary experience in how to treat patrons. Excellent service is something you come to expect, particularly in a high-end restaurant. That’s not always the case today but, we patrons must learn to be patient as the “newbies” learn their trade. It may take a while.
We are now approaching summertime and that means graduation, from high school, from college, and from being single to . . .well, getting married.
It always amuses me at graduation time. It’s one of those times when a graduation ceremony becomes an event where the commencement speaker tells thousands of students dressed in identical caps and gowns that "individuality" is the key to success. As our younger generation comes of age and begins their life’s pursuit, consider this. Of the young Americans who are of military-service age, what percentage do you think are NOT actually eligible to serve because of obesity, lack of a high school education or a criminal conviction (or some combination of all 3)? 71%. That is not a typo. We’re doomed.

Letters to the Editor More on Mom’s Day
Attn:Friedrich Gomez
I loved the article in the paper this week on Mother's Day,, I laughed out loud many times in reading this article. Especially mother's yelling in a loud voice even causing the neighbors to brush their teeth.
I did enough yelling too, as I had 4 sons , born between 1957 and 1963, plus a German Shepard, "Ace", who was about 5 years old. I remember one time doing some yelling at the kids and Ace went into his dog house as he thought he'd be next. He felt he was one of the boys.

winds, I can predict with a great deal of accuracy that we are gonna have some wild fires to deal with. Again. I can remember seven years ago, I tried to call my youngest son, Kenny, on an unrelated matter.
He answered, "Hi, dad. We're right in the middle of it and we're getting out of here." "In the middle of what? A fire?"
"Yes, it's within 200 yards of us and I'm getting Alex out of here now." "Call me when you're safe." He lives in Carlsbad.
I had heard on the radio there was a "small fire" near Palomar Airport but neither the control tower or airport officials were reporting whether the fire was interfering with air operations. Obviously, it is. It appears the fire had exploded out of control and threatening the Carlsbad Business Park area. Firefighters had their work cut out for them. We’re supposed to have mild weather again next week . . . but beweare . . . when it gets hot and windy you need to have a plan in place for evacuation for you, your family, your pets, your valuable papers and property . . . and to have plenty of food, water and first aid supplies on hand. You just never know..

The Miracle Circle was founded in 2014 to band together philanthropic and innovative women to serve as goodwill ambassadors to provide leadership and strategic advice on fundraising, community outreach and advocacy of the Miracle Babies programs. “Breakfast at Tiffany's is a day to honor and celebrate this wonderful group of dynamic philanthropic leaders dedicated to serving our mission” said Marjan Daneshmand, Miracle Babies co-founder. She added, “This year, we are gathering at just half capacity at this exclusive fundraising luncheon to renew our community’s commitment to the Miracle Babies mission and to recognize the work of our members.” In 2020, Miracle Babies provided support to more than 7,000 families through our community programs.

ABOUT MIRACLE BABIES: Miracle Babies is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to unite families with their hospitalized newborns. Our tagline is “Together for a better beginning,” reflecting the importance of this family connection in the critical early weeks and months of an infant’s life and its linkage to improved health outcomes. We know that parents with hospitalized babies need to be at the hospital as much as possible, but often that is not possible. Transportation issues, including the cost of gas, hospital parking fees and medically being unable to drive are significant barriers that many families in San Diego must overcome to be with their babies. By providing transportation services to families, Miracle Babies helps alleviate the stressors of everyday life, allowing mom and dad to get to the hospital, perform kangaroo care (a skin-to-skin practice), and breastfeed more often, practices which are known to result in better health outcomes for the baby. She earned an M.B.A. from Purdue University Global and a B.A. in organizational studies from the University of Michigan. During her time in college, Pitts was a student-athlete, helping her team win the Division 1 Field Hockey NCAA Championship. About Carlsbad Educational Foundation - Carlsbad Educational Foundation (CEF) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, founded in 1983, to raise private support for public education and contribute to the enrichment of nearly 11,000 students in the Carlsbad Unified School District. Since its inception, the foundation has contributed more than $10 million in funds to Carlsbad public schools, primarily for science, technology, and music – programs that would not be possible in California’s current school funding environment. 100% of donations go directly to support the Carlsbad Unified School District because CEF’s operating expenses are covered by student enrichment programs and Kids Care, a comprehensive before and after-school K-5 childcare program. Escondido Art Association PaintOut on Grand Avenue On Monday, March 3rd, a handful of members from the Escondido Art Association (EAA) held an informal paint-out on Grand Avenue in an effort to bring back some life into the community after the long lock-down this past year. The activity was planned by EAA Ambassador Suzanne Nicolaisen and led by prominent portrait and landscape artist, Kazuaki Uehara (Kazu). Some passers-by stopped to join in the fun and contribute their talent by painting some repurposed election signs collected in an effort to recycle and revitalize the community.
Laura Pitts, CEO Carlsbad Education Foundation
"Even in her short time as interim CEO, Laura demonstrated a natural ability to foster collaborative relationships and align the foundation’s resources with the most important needs of the Carlsbad Unified School District,” said Board Chair JR Phillips. While serving as interim CEO, Pitts helped the board of directors complete a bold new strategic plan and restructured the organization to meet the emerging needs of the school district’s 11,000 students and their families. “As a mother of two boys who will soon enter elementary school, I understand the importance of providing the very best educational experience possible through the public school system,” said Pitts. “Carlsbad Educational Foundation’s partner-

Equity in Healthcare
COVID-19 has had a disproportionately severe impact on California’s low income, African American, Latino and Pacific Islander communities, as well as on essential workers such as those in the healthcare, grocery and cleaning service industries. That’s why I am proud to support Assembly Bill 1038 (AB 1038), introduced by Assemblyman Mike Gipson (D – Carson). The bill establishes the California Health Equity Program within the Department of Public Health (CDPH) to provide grants supporting local health departments, nonprofit organizations, community clinics and tribes that have been on the front lines during this crisis. AB 1038 requires eligible applicants to be selected from specific localities/communities that have elevated rates of death from COVID-19 based on data collected by CDPH, and that have established an ability to implement programs based on demonstrated past accomplishments.
A recent report by the California Health Care Foundation showed widespread health disparities in California. For example, average statewide life expectancy is 80.8 years, but for Blacks it’s only 75.1, while Asian life expectancy is 86.3
years, an 11-year gap. Latinos are more likely to report being in fair/poor health, to live below the federal poverty level and to be uninsured. The pandemic has made the situation worse. Death rates for Latinos have been 22 percent higher than average, for Pacific Islanders 32 percent higher, and 7 percent higher for African-Americans. An oversight committee of 15 members to monitor the distribution of grants, program implementation and local impacts will ensure accountability. The committee will include members from community and statewide nonprofit organizations serving underserved communities, from community health clinics, a health system finance expert, among others. I spoke in support of AB 1038 when it passed the Assembly Health Committee on April 20th. Passage and implementation will help speed California’s recovery from the most severe public health crisis in history. Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and

County Update
For the last 14 months, like many around the Country, the Board of Supervisors has held their meetings on Zoom. Prior to COVID-19, like many I’d never heard of Zoom, now I wonder how did we ever function without it?
At the time of writing this, over 87% of the population in San Diego has received at least one dose of the vaccine and over 64% are fully vaccinated. The County is expanding its vaccine efforts making it easier for businesses and community organizations to host mobile vaccination events at their place of business. Businesses can fill out an online request for a mobile vaccination team to come to their worksite. Visit the County of San Diego website and you’ll see all of the information. With more and more San Diegans getting vaccinated, life is beginning to return to normal. At our next Board of Supervisors meeting a limited number of people will be allowed to attend and make comments in person at the County Administration Center. All safety protocols must be followed and if you’re unable to make it in-person, you can also continue to join the
meeting virtually.
It will be great to finally return back to the County Administration Center and have some sense of normalcy. Over the last 14 months we’ve learned to adapt and work, even from our home, but I look forward to getting back and seeing people in-person!

PROBLEM SOLVED BY CHRISTOPHER ELLIOTT Tempur-Pedic won't honor its return policy. Can you help get my $4,827 back?
When Tatiana Litvin tries to return her Tempur-Pedic bed, the company promises a quick return. But it's been two months. When will someone pick up her mattress -- and return her money?
Q: Can you help get Tempur-Pedic to honor its return policy? I recently bought a bed from Tempur-Pedic with the understanding that I could return it within 30 days. The mattress isn't working for me. It lets off gases and smells bad. I initiated a return, and a TempurPedic representative assured me that someone would pick up my mattress within one to two weeks. After that, the company would refund my credit card.
It's now been almost two months. No one has contacted me to complete the pick up of the mattress. I've called Tempur-Pedic over ten times. A representative told me to contact a third party called NVC Logistics Group to arrange a pickup. When I did, they told me they have no record of this return or pick up requested by Tempur-Pedic.
I've already called Tempur-Pedic repeatedly about this, and none of the reps were capable of assisting me. They just keep saying they called NVC to arrange a pickup but pick up and NVC keeps saying that they haven't. At this point, because TempurPedic had been giving me the runaround, I had to resort to reporting this to the Better Business Bureau in the hopes that they will finally honor their return policy. They didn't bother to reply to the complaint. Can you help me get my $4,827 back? -- Tatiana Litvin, Los Angeles A: I'm sorry to hear about your gaseous bed. That does not sound appealing to me. And if you spend $4,827 on a luxury bed, you have every right to expect a swift return. Tempur-Pedic's <a href="https://www.tempurpedic.co m/customer-service/returnpolicy/">return policy</a> is clear. It promises that you'll "fall in love with your mattress" -- or your money back. You have 30 nights (during the first 90 nights of ownership) to try your new Tempur-Pedic. If it doesn't work out and you don't love your new mattress, it will take the mattress back and refund your money, less shipping charges. There's no timeline on product returns, but I think it's fair to assume that it will happen quickly. A representative told you the return would take place within one to two weeks. That sounds about right.
I recommended that you reach out to the <a href="https://www.elliott.org/company-contacts/sealy/">managers at

Tempur-Pedic (owned by Sealy)</a>. I list the names, numbers and email addresses on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org. Unfortunately, that didn't work.
I don't think it's fair of TempurPedic -- or any other company -- to make you deal with a third party. Nor is it fair to make their pickup problem your problem. Someone from Tempur-Pedic should have taken ownership of your return request and seen it through to the end. I contacted Tempur-Pedic on your behalf. It arranged for a prompt pickup and refunded your purchase back to your credit card.

Some Flu Pandemics We’ve Forgotten
Influenza is a common name for a variety of viruses the world has lived with for hundreds of years. For those of us walking around today, the better part of the last century and so far, the present has been one “pandemic” after another … whether we’ve been aware of it or not. Historically speaking, influenza often

This rescheduled yoga vacation is a real stretch.
Erin Parisi's tour operator postpones her yoga retreat after the outbreak. Does she have to accept the rescheduled trip? And if she doesn't, will she lose most of her money? Q: In late 2019, I put a $500 deposit on a Costa Rica yoga retreat. I paid the balance of $2,550 a few weeks later. These payments were made through International Yoga, a tour operator that specializes in yoga retreats.
In March 2020, I received an email from International Yoga explaining that the retreat was being canceled and rescheduled to April 10 to 17, 2021.
I'm a public school teacher and can only take vacation time during scheduled school breaks. The company did not schedule the retreat for the same week as 2020 (which would have worked for me). It was rescheduled to the week before. International Yoga refused to refund my money. They are offering a $500 credit to a future retreat, so that means I’m losing $2,550. Can you help me get my money back? - Erin Parisi, Chelmsford, Mass. A: If your tour operator cancels your vacation, you should receive a full refund. But that's not always how it goes.
Have a look at the terms and conditions of your purchase. It says all payments to International Yoga are "non-refundable & non-transferable." And while it does say there are exceptions -- for example, International Yoga offers a refund for a retreat canceled because of

Most of us have become accustomed to dodging the flu season by getting an annual “shot,” which generally works. The annual season runs from late fall to early spring. The current world-wide pandemic known as “Covid-19,” (short for “Coronavirus,”) is bad. Here in our nation things seem to be leveling off due to the recent development of vaccines. These newly developed antidotes have helped richer nations such as we turn the tide on Covid-19. However, in some South American and African countries, as well as in certain European nations things are still bad. But, in India on the Asian sub-continent is getting worse by the hour, as many as 12,000 die daily. In the month of May India reported 800,000 to 1 million cases. To date, possibly more than 25 million lives around the globe have been identified as Covid-19 victims … a low figure compared to the 500 million-plus victims of “Spanish Flu.” The final tabulation of Covid-19 may not be known for years to come. The $145 adoption fee for Hart includes medical exam, spay, up to date vaccinations, registered microchip, and a one-year license if the adopter lives in the jurisdiction of San Diego Humane Society’s Department of Animal Services. San Marcos • Mayor Rebecca Jones State of the City
While the last year has presented unique challenges, the City of San Marcos’ future is bright. You can hear more about that in my justreleased State of the City Address, which focuses on the resiliency of our community. Not only did the City quickly implement programs and services to adjust to the needs of our residents and businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, but we also made significant progress on the San Marcos Creek Project, the largest capital improvement project in our City’s history! As we reflect on the past year, we want to highlight the City staff who continued to serve our community and provide essential services. I also want to say thank you to our community for continuing to support local businesses. Whether you live, work, or play in San Marcos, our community is certainly the place to “Discover Life’s Possibilities!” To view the State of the City Address, visit san-marcos.net.
Vista • Mayor Judy Ritter
Let’s Get Vaccina ted Vista
You know what makes our city so great? It’s our residents and their willingness to collaborate on projects.
Right now, we’re working on the most important project of our lifetime – to Get Vista Vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus. We are all eager to get our great city running again and in order to make this happen, we need to get vaccinated to keep safe, so we can return to our normal lifestyles. Now’s the time to roll up your sleeve and get vaccinated. For yourself. For your family. For your friends. For the community. On behalf of our City Council, thank you for your time, help, and commitment to keeping Vista safe, vibrant and healthy! It’s up to all of us to get vaccinated.

Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” McNamara Greetings Escondido,
As you know, we’ve had a Police Officer involved in a shooting recently in Escondido. As you might imagine, I have received numerous emails about the incident. From reading those emails, not everyone is familiar with what happens, so, I thought I would clear up the process a bit.
All officer involved shootings undergo a comprehensive criminal and administrative investigation to determine if the officer’s actions were within the law and within department policy. The investigation is independently reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the FBI. The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office is responsible for making the final determination into the legality of the officer’s use of deadly force. That determination is generally made within 180 days. Additionally, an internal review is conducted that examines what, if any, improvements to policy and police officer training are necessary to further enhance outcomes in police use of force incidents. Beyond the above Police Department related processes, the City Council will review its current policies and determine whether or not they need correction or some other actions related to governance in this type of situation. Stay informed, Be Kind, Remember your neighbor, and Stay safe! Semper Fi, Mac Paul P. McNamara, Mayor of Escondido pmcnamara@escondido.org

our own inability to understand the laser focus of the “woke” culture in its frantic attempt to micro-evaluate every aspect of contemporary culture and behavior in terms of its potential to negatively impact or offend some target group. In conversations with our customers and friends we found that most shared this discomfort.

American Racism (part I of II)
Bias: Prejudice in favor of or against a thing, person, or group as compared with another.
Woke: A term used to describe people who feel they are particularly aware or “woke” to injustice inflicted through bias. Racism: A form of bias in which a person or group assumes a generalized racial bias applies to all individuals of that race. Our decision to initiate the discussion on “cancel culture” and “political correctness” as it applies to bias and racism had its origins in
Cancelling Brer Rabbit, Uncle Remus, Aunt Jamima, Uncle Ben, Dr. Suesse and Disney films like Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, Aristocats, Dumbo, The Jungle Book and other beloved classics because they contain “negative stereotypes” seemed like a bit of an over-reach to many of us. “Politically correctness” advocates telling white women not to wear hoop ear rings so as to avoid offending women of color through cultural appropriation also seems to be a rather lame way to invent racial sensitivity. These are tiny examples of the politically correct and cancel culture efforts that seem to ride roughshod over the concepts of free speech, reason and critical thought these days. There seems to be little opposition to the “woke” agenda. The “silent majority” appears to be reluctant to call out the shallowness and frivolity of the “woke’s” politically correct and cancel culture movements for fear of being labeled or cancelled as racist or ignorant. The “woke’s” success in intimidating the silent majority is rooted in the fact that we all have biases and we know it. They are hard wired
The Appraiser’s Corner
Postcards are becoming increasingly more popular as collectibles. To be technical, the collecting of postcards is called “deltiology”. Postcards first appeared in the 1870s and souvenir view cards were first introduced in the United States in 1898.
Nowadays postcards are everywhere. You need to probably narrow your scope of collecting postcards to one or two subjects. You might be interested in postcards that feature trains, or the State of Utah, or even a sport. Postcards are easily accessible. Most antique shows and shops will have postcards for sale, as well as postcard conventions.
When collecting postcards keep in mind that the condition of the card is critical. If you want to collect postcards that are valuable they must be in top, or mint, condition. Of course, your may be collecting just to have fun, and in that case the value of the card is secondary.
If you do want to protect your postcard collection mount your cards on acid-free paper in albums, or protect them with glycine covering and put them in boxes.
A few of the current most popular categories of postcards to collect include presidential postcards, cards of the 100th anniversary of the St. Louis Exposition (Fair) of 1904, and Route 66 postcards.
Postcards of the United States presidents are especially popular in an elec-
into us nearly from birth. Your own self identity is always with you. You are favorably biased toward whatever you are. If you are a girl you probably prefer to remain a girl. If you are black you probably don’t wish to be Caucasian or Asian. If you are of Irish, Italian, Greek or any other nationality you probably know many positive things about your ancestry and nations history and few negative things. You may have a passionate allegiance to the sports team of your home town or college that defies critical reasoning. We all filter information to fit our natural biases. If you are from San Diego and a baseball fan, you’re a Padres fan. You know all kinds of good stuff about the Padre’s heroes and history but you probably don’t
tion year. Presidents appeal to collectors because each president represents an era in history that can never be repeated. Presidential postcards allow collectors to hold history. They bring back memories. The most desirable presidential postcards are those that are early political cards, and ones that show real photos. Ideally, you would have a card that combines both features.
Collectors of presidential postcards do tend to specialize in one or more of their favorite presidents. Postcards of John Kennedy, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan are hot collectibles now. Presidential cards are very affordable. Even cards that are 100 years old rarely sell for more than $1015, unless they are in mint condition. Once in a while you may see some presidential sets for sale, published by Morris Katz, Raphael Tuck, or M.A. Sheehan. If you are a collector, go for them. Their value will only increase.
Cards of the St. Louis World’s Fair of 1904 are simply beautiful. They are well worth collecting, and according to William J. Bomar in his book Postal Markings of the United States Expositions, there are over 1000 different postcards from that Fair. As the year 2004 marked the Fair’s 100th anniversary, postcards are selling for a little more than they normally would, but if you see a postcard you like, by all means get it while you can. Postcards of Route 66 have become popular collectibles. Just the mention
of Route 66 stirs up memories to millions of Americans. It will forever symbolize freedom and romance. Cards of Route 66 may be divided among such categories including landmarks, natural wonders, events, shrines, and even motels along the way. Many collectors insist that their cards include the words Route 66, U.S. 66 or Highway 66 on them.
know that the Padre’s have been the worst team in the Majors over the past fifty years (won/lost record). Sorry. Race, body shape, non-Christian religions, ethnicity, nationality and sexual preference are some identity groups the “wokes” champion. They claim to have discovered ancient and evil biases that permeate our society and require drastic measures to replace our negative biases with artificial positive biases. Being categorized as a racists and/or white supremacist simply because of the color of our skin is shocking. Is the “woke” right about us? Tune in next week.

State regulation, however, favors you. Under Massachusetts state law, a tour operator must offer a refund when it cancels a trip. You could have complained to the attorney general. <a href="https://www.mass.gov/howto/file-a-consumercomplaint">Here’s the form.</a> (Note: This applies to you because you live in Massachusetts. You wouldn't be covered if you reside in a different state.) Still, as I review the correspondence between you and International Yoga, it's obvious the company is in a tight spot. Apparently it didn't have the money to cover refunds and asked customers like you for understanding. Giving them a chance to reschedule was the right thing to do.
I had an interesting correspondence with the owner of International Yoga. She suggested that I should be advocating for small businesses hurt by the pandemic. I agree with her that small businesses need someone to advocate for them. But they already do in the form of local organizations and national trade groups. Small businesses also have access to lawyers who can help them during a difficult time like this. Consumers like you have limited options. And that's why my advocacy team and I are here. I contacted International Yoga on your behalf. It agreed to offer you a full credit, which you can use toward any future trip. You accepted. such as we readers have grown accustomed. It's hard running a newspaper. I worked on a few back East. It's even harder getting "called on" for putting a "fluff piece" on a front cover. Another egregious example was the "Dummy for a Day" -- which should have been flagged as an Inside Feature Story only. You have a lot of staunch fans out here Lyle, and we support you. You even have a lot of 'Academics' who follow you. But, along with that loyalty comes 'honesty' when we care enough to give it. It's hard composing this. I even shared my thoughts with colleagues, coworkers, friends, neighbors, and they all agreed. Bad news was no one wanted to say anything. So guess who they appointed as the Messenger? -- me! Hey, two 'clunkers' on your cover ain't a bad batting average as we Yankee fans would say! And by the way, we agree with you that "The Land" by Michele Ivy Davis was a prize-winning Cover Story! We love that gal! Keep your literary guard up, Lyle. Because when you're at your best, well, no one can touch you! From a staunch fan of The Paper, Geoffrey T. Lane, San Diego County.
