DATELINE: LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA IN THE PREDAWN HOURS.
It is still dark in Los Angeles. Most residents are still deep asleep. No one knew what was about to happen. It was January 17, 1994. Very soon, millions of Angelenos would wake up to a living nightmare at precisely 4:31 a.m. 9-1-1 Emergency Dispatcher: “Fire Paramedics, can I help you.” Woman in Distress: “Help me! I can’t see anything! Please help, we had an earthquake!” Dispatcher: “Listen to me – calm down. Because the fire department will come out, okay?” Woman: “The earthquake!! The earthquake hit my house, it’s falling apart!! I don’t know what to do!!” Minutes later, Los Angeles KFI Radio Station announcer, Jay Lawrence, takes to the airwaves: “Ladies and gentlemen, we just experienced a real whopper here, especially at the radio station! All I can say is that Los Angeles apparently just had a major, major tremor!”
In the darkness of Los Angeles’ vast metropolitan area a city of frightened, panic-filled residents pour out into the streets away from their homes, apartments, and various shelters, seeking open space away from crumbling buildings and debris. For many, the memory still persists as if it were only yesterday. This was no ordinary earth tremor; it would prove to be both deadly and mysterious on a variety of different levels. Powerful seismic shockwaves rumble throughout the city, snapping gas lines, and igniting a series of uncontrolled fires. Water pipes rupture as if they were only made of cheap plastic, creating geysers of both water and fire shooting upwards. These two elements (fire and water), which would normally cancel each other out, provide a surreal image of a single fountain thrusting upwards, together! With structures still ablaze and crumbling, emergency first-responders enter random neighborhood dwellings to ensure that no living human being has been left behind, or incapacitated that would render their arms and legs useless in trying to escape a deadly aftermath.

dark – and left to themselves, isolated and vulnerable. Almost no one was prepared. Public emergency precautions and survival provisions such as basic medical items, flash lights, water and food supplies, were never in place.
At first, the major damage seemed to be confined to a specific area of Los Angeles known as the San Fernando Valley, which is only 20 miles northwest of downtown. This assessment would quickly prove deadly wrong. Emergency Central is quickly receiving shocking evidence of a much wider, much deadlier range of destruction. The incoming intelligence reports stun even the most seasoned First Responder Units. The
dismal reports to Central Control would read: “Sections of five separate freeways – in different parts of the city – have collapsed!”
One ‘live’ report from a vehicle reveals utter chaos in oncoming traffic that has become dangerously irregular and causing head-on collisions: “I am southbound on the 5-Freeway and there is traffic on the southbound coming directly at me in the number one lane! There’s a break in the road and traffic’s coming directly at me, head-on, in the southbound lane! I’ve just been hit!! – I’m in shock!!”

Emergency Central issues an urgent call to all its crew members, both on the ground and in vehicles: “All units be advised. We have just sustained a major earthquake in the east L.A. basin. All unit battalions report on Blue-4.”

cycle flew off a collapsed freeway overpass. He was on his way to work in the early predawn hours when the killer quake hit.
It would become known as the Northridge Earthquake and it struck at precisely 4:31 a.m., Pacific Standard Time. It was measured at a magnitude 6.7. The Northridge earthquake was actually centered (epicenter) in Reseda, a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles. It was not California’s biggest tremor, but in many ways it was foremost and vicious in how it struck. It must be kept in mind that earthquakes are not only measured in magnitude of force, but also in its proximity to major population areas which directly affects human lives, etc. The Northridge tremor was the first earthquake to strike directly under an urban area of the United States since the 1933 Long Beach earth-shaker. Additionally, the quake was most mysterious --the fault line under which it occurred, was never even known to have existed before! Until now. World scientists had converged to study the phenomenon. Within two hours after the quake hit, there were already ten geologists out in the fields of Los Angeles, some airborne in helicopters, surveying the damage. At first, they too, were mystified. Normally, earthquakes leave some kind of bulge or rupture on the surface. This one didn’t.

It was later found that the tremor actually occurred on a ‘blind thrust fault,’ which means there is no visible fault line to see with the human eye, such as can be seen with other faults, like the San Andreas fault line. James Dolan, an earthquake geologist at Cal Tech says, “It was one of those unfortunate instances where we had to have an earthquake to discover a new fault line. We didn’t know this fault even existed!” So, how many other invisible fault lines are there here in California that may pose a deadly scenario? No one knows how many. This newly-discovered deadly fault is still there, and the community of Northridge in the San Fernando Valley still sits directly on top of it. Geologists now suspect there may be hundreds, even thousands, of unknown faults scattered throughout the California region.
Though there have been bigger earthquakes than the one in Northridge, California, few released more energy and sheer force underground! It was a blessing that the Northridge event happened deep underground, over 10 miles deep, under the earth’s crust. Had it not been, well, the consequences would have been unimaginable! “As it was, the Northridge earthquake created enormous physical convulsions 10 miles deep beneath the earth’s crust and would prove to be nothing less than the most destructive earthquake in Los Angeles history.” (Killer Quake, Nova video, 2006.) And I’ll tell you the truth, had I not been knocked unconscious I think I might have died from a heart attack!!” At such times, the view of a topsyturvy world often seems dreamlike to victims -- unreal and terrifying to the point of causing many survivors lifelong nightmare and day-trauma, similar to what our combat soldiers suffer with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). One such Northridge earthquake survivor tells his tale: “I tried to sit up from my bed, but I couldn’t. I slowly tried again, but still could not sit or get up out of my bed. Lying on my back, my eyes soon realized that the ceiling to my home was just inches above my head! In total anxiety and disbelief, I went into severe shock.”
The Northridge event released deep underground energy so unreal that it even shocked the world’s leading scientists who had studied other worldwide earth-movers: “From the San Fernando Valley the earth shook and the shockwaves actually travelled underneath . . . (long pause) . . . an entire mountain range, devastating buildings in Santa Monica, 18 miles to the south!” Another geologist said in stunned amazement, “It took only 6 seconds to release its deadly energy.

In only 6 seconds, it derailed trains, 9 freeway bridges were left in shambles, and 4 freeway over-passes were sliced completely in half. And it still wasn’t done!” The earth continued shaking for a full 20 seconds!
The 10-mile underground power and energy moved foremost geologist, Lucy Jones, of the U.S. Geological Survey to state: “The underground quake movement was so powerful that it overwhelmed all ground sensors. The earth’s underground -- over 10 miles deep, was moving in so many places at once that we thought ‘This cannot be real – this must be a glitch in our measurement computer systems!” Scientist, James Dolan, weighed in: “The amount of energy involved in moving a part of the earth’s crust – a crust 10 miles thick – moving that much earth 20-feet in a couple seconds . . . is mind-boggling!” The Northridge quake, in fact, buckled the earth upwards, adding over one-foot to the elevation of hills and mountains surrounding the northern edge of the city of Los Angeles. Normally, mountains and hills grow only a few millimeters in elevation every 100 years! (For a better illustration: 25 millimeters over a span of 500 years would, normally, add less than one inch to a mountain’s elevation.) The Northridge quake added over 12” in a few seconds! As previously stated, this was no ordinary California earthquake.

The Northridge earthquake had many residents in both Los Angeles and San Diego counties wondering - was this the ‘Big One’ which all geologists are warning us about? The answer is a most frightening one: No. The colossal, mega-earthquake which even Hollywood films have capitalized on . . . is still out there, just waiting to make its hellish debut. Just a few weeks ago, in the darkened hours on Friday, June 10, 2016, an earth tremor would disturb San Diego County residents out of a dead sleep. It would strike at exactly 1:04 a.m. at a very shallow depth of only ½-mile beneath the earth surface and register a magnitude of 5.2, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). According to the USGS, such a magnitude quake can create considerable damage – luckily, this one did not. The quake’s center was 13-miles north-northwest of Borrego Springs. It was strong enough to be felt in the city of Los Angeles, as well as in the counties of Riverside, San Bernardino and, of course, San Diego County where the earthquake originated. Though the shaker did not produce great damage, it did rattle a lot of nerves, particularly in San Diego’s North County region, including Escondido. Some felt it more than others. Many reacted with different levels of fear.
It takes a lot to scare our new Southern California resident, 20year-old movie and television actress, McKaley Miller. After all, the beautiful transplant from Texas is no cityslicker and knows her way around the barn. Tornados, hurricanes -- no sweat. Just turn off the lights before you hit the hay. But, earthquakes? Well, that’s a whole different kettle of fish! In her entire young lifetime (up to now), she was never more petrified! Texas native, Miller, said on Twitter: “I literally thought a ghost was pushing my bed,

Olympics Mementos in Museum Exhibit - As the world prepares to celebrate the Olympic Games in Rio, the Valley Center History Museum is preparing an exhibition honoring two local athletes with historic Olympics credentials. The show, opening July 8, will feature memorabilia, photos and mementos, including a Gold Medal, that spotlight the international accomplishments of diver Bernie Wrightson and runner Ray Malott. Wrightson, a Valley Center resident, set an Olympics record to win the Gold Medal in Springboard Diving at the 1968 Summer Games in Mexico City. In 1967 he won a Gold Medal at the Pan-American Games in Winnipeg. From 1964 to 1968, he captured eight U.S. AAU Open titles in diving. Malott, who died last year, was one of the world's best runners. Sidelined by measles at the controversial 1936 Olympics, he returned victorious to Berlin Stadium two years later as captain and star of the U.S. Track & Field Team, running before 100,000 spectators. During 1937-38, he won 61 of 65 races throughout Europe. The exhibition is scheduled to run through August, but could be extended. The History Museum at 29200 Cole Grade Road is open Tuesday through Saturday from 12noon to 4pm.

But actress, McKaley Miller was not the only celeb to get rattled by the San Diego County shaker. Local actor and legendary skateboarder, Tony Hawk (native of Carlsbad), felt the earth move under his legendary feet, also – and it was no out-of-control skateboard under him, either! The North County resident said on Twitter: “Earthquake! It felt like a bus hit our house!” IS SAN DIEGO COUNTY PREPARED?
Earthquakes are nothing new to California and, yet, how much have we learned from them? Are San Diego County residents prepared for a major earthquake disaster? Do our elementary schools have periodic emergency and disaster drills for our young children to be as safe as possible?
Famed geologist, Charles Richter once said, “Only fools, liars, and charlatans predict earthquakes.” Does that mean that we should totally stop our research in trying to better understand and possibly predict earthquakes in the future? Charles Richter’s acid remark could easily apply to every major discovery before it was brought into reality, including airplanes, electric light bulbs, radio, and television! All of which were once said to be the domain of foolish, even stupid, thinking! Lasers, computers and cell phones were once the predictions of fools, liars, and charlatans – as are attempts for better earthquake predictions, today. Rational minds do not give up trying to better understand the nature of these earth-shakers and perhaps, someday, we’ll be able to predict them to some degree. Key phrase: Let’s not stop trying. Unfortunately, the answer is a resounding “yes,” we are at a very high earthquake risk! According to the U.S. Geological Survey database: “Escondido, California shows an 87.26% chance of a major earthquake within 50 kilometers of Escondido, within the next 50 years.” Which means a major quake (major is classified at magnitude 7.0 to 7.9), may strike at any time: tonight, tomorrow, next week, next month – anytime within the 50-year stated time-frame!
(Note: Keep in mind that the Borrego Springs tremor this past June 10 was a mere 5.2 magnitude classified as only “moderate,” and was not an Escondido earthquake; its epicenter was some 66 miles away. And yet, at that distance, and from the locale of another city, it still roused a lot of people out of a deep slumber, here! The “major” category earthquake the USGS says Escondido is at high risk of – would be approximately 65 to 100-times more powerful than the BorregoSprings tremor – and its epicenter would be here, in Escondido, not at a 66-mile distance! Major Injury Traffic Collision
On Wednesday, June 29, at 3:46 a.m., an Officer from the Carlsbad Police Department arrived at the scene of a single vehicle traffic collision that had just occurred on Cannon Rd. just east of Hemingway Dr. He is wanted on suspicion of groping an eight-year-old girl in San Marcos. It happened on Tuesday, June 21st between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at a laundromat in the 100 block of South Rancho Santa Fe Road in San Marcos. The victim walked away from her mother to a nearby sink to wash her hands. A man came up behind her and lifted her up to help her. As he set her down, he inappropriately touched the girl over her clothing and then left the laundromat. The girl reported the incident to her mother after they left the laundromat.
The suspect is described as a Hispanic man, between 30 and 50 years old, about 5'7" tall, weighs about 160 pounds with short black or grayish hair. At the time
Upon arrival, the Officer found a 19 year old female had lost control of her scooter and collided with a traffic control sign. The female suffered significant injuries to the left side of her body as a result of the collision. Additional officers arrived on scene to assist and provided medical aid to the injured female, ultimately placing a tourniquet on her to control her bleeding. The Carlsbad Fire Department arrived and continued to provide medical aid to the female. Paramedics transported the female to Scripps Hospital, La Jolla. The female was subsequently transported to the UCSD Medical Center. Another motorist who witnessed the collision stated the female was unable to negotiate the turn in the road due to her speed which caused her to collide with the center median and ultimately strike
We arrived late afternoon/early evening and there was a thunderstorm on its way. We set up a tent in the meadow and Carl and I slept in the tent while the girls slept in the car . . . we all slept right through the storm. Nothing like the sight and sounds of a mid western thunderstorm to lull you to sleep . . . rain drops falling on the tent, occasional flashes of light from the lightning . . . and we fell asleep, like little babies.
Man About Town Remembering Carl
Over breakfast recently I got to reminiscing about Carl Reynolds, my best friend, and the memories just came pouring out.

I remembered when we were young marrieds and went to some farm in Iowa. The farmer had a pond and had given us permission to fish there.
The next day, we caught a gazillion grasshoppers and as soon as we could put them on the hook and cast into the water, we'd pull out a lovely bluegill. We must have caught hundreds of bluegill that day. Lots of laughter . . . out on a farmer's meadow, by his pond.
Later, Carl and I went together and bought a 17' fiberglass canoe. I'd get off work at 4pm, go load up the canoe, drive to his barbershop and as soon as he'd finish his last customer . . . we'd head out west of Omaha by about 25-30 miles, load the canoe into a gently flowing stream and just go for a canoe ride. We weren't fishing . . . just enjoying the outdoors. We'd paddle . . . then drift . . . letting the current carry us along silently. Escondido Fire officials are continuing their investigation of the fire at the abandoned Talone’s Meat Market at 559 N. Hale Avenue in Escondido. Power has been restored to the affected area. The Police Department reports that the several transients that were reported to be living in the building have been located and are safe.
Escondido Fire was supported by neighboring fire agencies from Carlsbad, Deer Springs, Oceanside, San Diego, San Marcos, Valley Center, and Vista. At the peak of the fire, over 96 firefighters were on scene. Armed Domestic Violence Suspect Arrested
On Friday, July 1 at 7:30pm the City of Carlsbad Police Department received a 911 call from a citizen regarding a domestic battery that just occurred in the 100 block of Juniper Avenue between Carlsbad Boulevard and Garfield Street. now had to go against the current in order to get back to the car . . . but it was a mild current so it wasn't difficult. It took Carl about six canoe trips before he finally figured out that it was far more desirable to have the rear seat rather than the front. (less paddling, usually; the rear seat guy pretty much acts as a rudder . . . the front guy has to do most of the work). Still makes me laugh when he discovered I'd been getting the easy canoe assignment.
I remember shortly after we had acquired the canoe there was a big flood. Well, not knowing any better, Carl and I took the canoe and went out to where the flood was . . . I think it was either the Platte or Elkhorn River . . . and we launched the canoe. We had no life jackets . . . the current was rather heavy. It was exciting. And dumb, dumb, dumb. If that canoe had tipped (an easy thing to do in a canoe, particularly in heavy flowing water) one or both of us would likely have drowned and I wouldn't be here writing this now. You think back on some of the dumb things you did in life that should have killed you ... Another time, we'd go over to De Soto Bend, on the northern edge of Omaha (and my memory, perhaps faulty) wants me to say it was on the Iowa side of the Missouri River. We'd paddle in there . . . hook up to an upright tree sticking up out of the water and the wind/current would slowly turn us round the tree . . . every single time we'd come over a certain spot, our rods would bend

Another time we, on the spur of the moment, decided to make the 5hour drive to Windom, Minnesota, where I was born. We arrived there about 11pm, maybe midnight. We didn't have a tent . . . we just spread our bedrolls out on the beach and fell asleep, listening the the gentle summer wind blowing through the cottonwood trees . . . and hearing the lake waters lap upon the beach . . . I don't even recall any mosquitoes (and for Minnesota, in the summer, that's something!) I don't recall whether we caught any fish the next morning or not. Didn't matter. Carl and I were together, enjoying life and laughing a lot.
I remember, too, the later years in life . . . after Carl had moved to just outside Seattle, Washington (Maple Valley) with his beautiful Debi. They lived in a beautiful log . . . you really couldn't call it a log cabin . . . it was so much more than a cabin. It was like a log . maybe not a mansion . . . but a lovely big log house . . . warm, cozy, colorful . . . lots of forest outside . . . lots of laughter inside. Carl Reynolds . . . my best friend. Cancer claimed him a couple years ago . . . and I still miss the old rascal. But we sure did have the

iff and worked in the corrections environment. She was much more than simply a deputy sheriff, but was the first fully certified female deputy sheriff of the Imperial County Sheriff ’s Office. While there were female “officers” working for the department over the years, none were academy trained and sworn officers. Alice was, and she eventually retired after many years of honorable service.
Most of us were unaware of her service with WASP. Alice never mentioned it voluntarily and would speak of her time in the air only if asked. She was obviously very proud of her service, but she was equally humble. She flew a variety of aircraft around the country during the war, including fighters, transport aircraft and bombers. She told stories of some issues relating to weather or mechanical failures, but was always able to bring her assigned aircraft home safely. Sadly, Alice Magill passed away before she could receive her Congressional Gold Medal. Today, visitors can see her department uniform and other items on display at the Pioneer’s Museum in Imperial, California. She was a true American hero, both in the air and on the ground as a peace officer. I was proud to know her and count her as a friend. Sincerely, Michael Hackett Assistant Sheriff (Retired)

In the commentary by Major General Jerry Curry, he made 2 points. The 1st was that Arabs think in thousands of years and even though they keep losing against Israel, they keep fighting because someday they will succeed. The 2nd was that even after the victory of the first gulf war when the Western countries and Arab countries soldiers were celebrating their victory again Iraq, a single Arab general said though we celebrate today to you we will never be brothers and to us you will always be infidels.
This second one is wrong on 2 levers. The first is that it allows 1 person to speak for a religion that has 1.6 billion followers and over 50 different "sects." 2nd is that his first point proves the second point is wrong in that each time we work together we become a little bit more like brothers and little bit less like infidels so if one thinks in thousands of years or maybe even only hundreds of years, someday we will be brothers and not infidels for all Muslims. During the decade of the famine, more than 2 million Irishmen left their homeland, migrating to the U.S., Canada, England, and Australia.
The Great Irish Famine
The great influx of Irish immigrants to the United States during the mid1800s can be attributed to the potato.
The great Irish potato famine in 1845, was an unusual blight, which devastated Ireland’s potato crop, the basic staple in the population. The majority of people depended upon the tuber for their diet. Most Irish peasants rented small plots of land from absentee British landlords, and because an acre of potatoes could support a family for a year, it became vital to survival. Potatoes are nutritious and easy to grow, requiring minimal labor, training or equipment. A spade is all that’s required. When the blight struck, the potatoes turned slimy, black, and rotten in just days after they were dug from the ground.
While most of the immigrants thought they would be going to a better place, in reality, the Irish were treated like second-class citizens, especially in the United States. Jobs that were available ranged from being servants and housekeepers for the women, and hard construction labor for the men. Many were uneducated, which limited the job possibilities. Enlisting in the military was commonplace for many of the young men. A good number of cities, most notably New York, hired the Irish for their police force, primarily because of their ability to police their own populace. It took many years before being Irish didn’t hold a certain stigma in society. The discrimination of being Irish ranked just above being an AfricanAmerican for much of the last half of the 19th century and into the early 20th century. A variety of causes were suspected, from static electricity to smoke bellowing from railroad locomotives, even the vapors from volcanoes. The actual cause was a fungus that had traveled from North America to Ireland. The blight resulted in what became known as “Famine Fever,” killing thousands of people suffering from cholera, dysentery, scurvy, typhus, and infestations of lice. Those trying to combat conditions reported seeing children crying with pain and looking “like skeletons, their features sharpened with hunger and their limbs wasted, so that little was left but bones.” Masses of bodies were buried without coffins only a few inches below the soil. Some 750,000 Irishmen died from the famine over the next decade to around 1855.
Despite pleas from the small population of well-to-do Irish as well as some British living in Ireland, the British-controlled government did little to help, merely forcing hundreds of thousands of peasants into workhouses.
Within the first five years of what was known among the Irish as “The Great Hunger,” the population of Ireland had been reduced by 25 percent. Ireland wasn’t the only country to be struck by the fungus, known as Phytophthorainfestans, it reached into northern Europe, primarily Norway, causing famine in that country. “Millionaire’s Club” Encourages Young Readers - At the end of the school year in May, Karen Thompson, librarian at Olive Elementary School in Vista and a member of Soroptimist International of Vista and North County Inland, presented awards to this year’s crop of “Millionaires." Nine students were driven in a limousine to the Oceanside Pier for a celebratory lunch at Ruby's Diner followed by a party at the school's library, where they each received certificates and gift cards. Thompson created the Millionaire's Club to encourage students at Olive to read more. “Millionaires” are students who have reached a special benchmark within each academic year--reading 1 million words or more as evidenced by their Accelerated Reading (AR) comprehension test scores. All students take an AR test after reading a book independently, with the teacher or having one read to them. To pass, they must receive a score of 80%. Our Art Director, Troy Larson, also lives in that area, in Tacoma. I also have a former Escondidan, Ray Nutter, who moved up there and now works for Costco. So, we have a number of pals we could visit - a number of wild berries we could pick, and the sea food restaurants in Seattle are to die for! ••••• Many of you have indicated an interest in meeting the writers and staff that make up The Paper. We are planning on a “Meet the Paper” gathering at J&M Restaurant in Escondido later this month. Chamber Music Concert – On Saturday, July 23rd, at 2:30pm, at the Encinitas Library, 540 Cornish Dr., Encinitas, there will be a concert of six performance groups from the North Coast Symphony Orchestra. August 17, there is an exhibition at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM), titled Luann's Journey to College, showcases a selection of Sunday strips by renowned, award-winning local cartoonist Greg Evans. This limited, special exhibition features cartoons highlighting Luann's struggles and successes with school, from her early junior high days at age 13 to her current college age of 18. Luann faces insecurity and indecision like many teens, and her immaturity sheds a funny light on difficult situations. Evans is the creator of the nationally syndicated comic strip, Luann, which launched in 1985 and appears in 400 papers worldwide. In May 2016, Evan’s received an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts from CSUSM. In 2006, Center Artes at CSUSM produced his musical, “Luann, Scenes In A Teen’s Life.” He’s also a recipient of the National Cartoonists Society’s highest honor, Cartoonist of the Year, for 2003. Greg was born in Burbank, California. Afflicted with "Cartooning Disease," he dreamed of becoming the next Walt Disney or Charles Schulz. He submitted dozens of comic strip ideas which yielded nothing but

June has been a great month for me. It gave me an opportunity to celebrate my birthday, attend a Chaplain’s Conference in Michigan, visit my place of birth and nurture in Michigan, visit relatives, and try my luck at some freshwater fishing. It was a rewarding experience. Some people say, “You can’t go home again.” Michigan was my home, has been my home, and will always be my home. While I have lived in California more years than in Michigan, and have enjoyed and bragged about most of those years, there is still a sense of my beginning and longing for Michigan.

I wonder if that is the way it is for us with God. There seems to be, in spite of the many who deny it, a pull and desire to rediscover, reunite, and share with God. The Bible says He is our creator and all things depend on Him. While many of us, including me, wander away from Him and go to far and distant places morally, mentally, and spiritually like the Biblical story of the Prodigal Son, the time comes when we know He waits for us to come back home to recapture our true existence. That is how it is when I go “back home.” While most of my family, friends, and acquaintances are gone, there is a spirit that calls me. When I am there, the feelings of belonging and substance are real. While many might not have had a deep and meaningful relationship with God, anytime is a good time (anytime) to reconnect with your spiritual foundation and heritage. There is never a time with God when “you can’t go home again.”

Record 7th Term for Museum Officers For the seventh consecutive year, all four officers who head the Valley Center History Museum Board of Directors have been reelected to another one-year term. Led by president Earl Brown, the team includes vice-president William Boyett, treasurer Nicky Lovejoy, and secretary Lynne Boyett. The officers head a 12-member Board that operates the museum and oversees the Historical Society. In recommending the unprecedented re-election of the officers, a Nominating Committee pointed out that

$72 Million Budget Adopted
The Vista City Council adopted a $72.6 million General Fund budget for the upcoming budget year, which began on July 1. This spending plan has been developed to meet the needs of residents and businesses of the City, as well as City Council goals through June 30, 2017. The City has a balanced budget and is on sound financial ground to realize our community goals and long-term fiscal health. This budget pays for various City services such as fire protection, law enforcement, parks and recreation, youth and senior programs, street and park maintenance, and land use planning, which contribute to the quality of life for the Vista
community. The City's Capital Improvement Program (CIP) budget totaling $20 million was also adopted. The CIP funds ongoing citywide construction projects for street and traffic improvements, sidewalk repairs, park upgrades, sewer infrastructure, other citywide improvements, and four new capital projects: •The new downtown S. Citrus Public Parking Lot •Phase II Construction of the Paseo Santa Fe Street Improvements •Pedestrian Mobility and Sidewalk Improvements •Buena Yard Sewer Improvements The budget documents are available for viewing at CityofVista.com under “Finance”.

Fry’s, Staples, Best Buy and other big box stores often have eye-popping ads for super cheap PC “specials.” When you ask to see the “special,” you’ll find the sales person eager to show you something else. They’re on commission and the “special” pays them peanuts so their job is to “bait and switch” you to a pricier system. If you insist on the “special” your sales person will turn you over to the “new guy,” and look for another customer. Hardly anyone goes out car or house shopping with the plan to buy the cheapest product on the market. If that were the case we’d all drive a “Smart Car” and have a “single wide” in Hemet. Since any computer can handle basic tasks like E-mail, Internet surfing and word processing, it may seem logical to buy the cheapest PC available. DAR Members Heard Program on Slave Trade in Revolutionary War - Cynthia Mestad Johnson presented a program on the slave trade in the Revolutionary War era to a recent meeting of the Santa Margarita Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Her extensive research in many states, Cuba and Africa, led to the writing of a book “James DeWolf and the R.I. Slave Trade”. The recounting of DeWolf ’s influence was stunning and intriguing. Regent Linda Ramos presented Mrs. Johnson with a certificate and honorarium. The honorarium was donated back to the chapter for a project with one of the

head when her boyfriend slammed her head onto the hardwood floor in their residence. The victim identified the suspect as Gabriel Navarro. The victim advised officers that Navarro had armed himself with a shotgun and was still somewhere inside their residence. Carlsbad Fire Department Paramedics responded and transported the victim to a local hospital where she was treated and released for her injuries.
The Carlsbad Police Department SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiations Team responded to the location and made several attempts to contact Navarro with Public Address announcements and via telephone however he did not respond. Carlsbad Police SWAT Officers searched the residence with the assistance of a Carlsbad Police K9. The K9 located Navarro hiding in the attic of the residence. Navarro was arrested and transported to the hospital prior to being booked into Vista Jail on domestic battery charges.

Bonsall Woman’s Club Awards Scholarships – The Bonsall Woman’s Club (BWC) distributed a total of $32,000 to graduating seniors residing in the Bonsall/Fallbrook area, from Fallbrook and Mission Vista High Schools. The 100 members strong Bonsall Woman’s Club supports the community in many ways and scholarships to help youth with financial aid. Graduating seniors complete an application from the Guidance Counselor at school and submit it for evaluation by a five-member committee from the BWC. Selected applicants are interviewed by the committee who then chooses the recipients, based on established criteria.
