There is no such thing as a perfect child. All children get into mischief. All learn and explore their new life’s vocabulary, and experiment in testing the boundaries of family rules. All are disciplined for repeating cuss words, rude remarks, racial terms, and various vulgarities they hear in the ‘real world.’
It is virtually impossible for a human child – or young teen-aged minor – to fully comprehend the world in a truly (objective) and (fully mature) perspective.

We all traverse that lengthy process called “growing up.”
And without exception, no one in their formative (and juvenile) years was ever perfect in never saying, behaving, or doing something that may have been racially offensive in some way, manner, or innuendo (deliberately or accidentally).
Anyone claiming to have been the perfect parent of the perfect child would fall under the scythe of selfarrogance and delusional hypocrisy, as captured in the humorous phrase:
“Those people who think they are Biblically perfect, really upset those of us who really are!”
IS IT ETHICAL FOR ADULTS TO BE FIRED FOR RACIAL MISTAKES AS CHILDREN OR ADOLESCENTS? This very question seems so ridiculous that some may not even consider giving it sober consideration.
And yet, shockingly, this is exactly what is now happening with greater and greater frequency across the United States.

So extraordinary are her talents that just this year, in 2021, even the mighty Forbes Magazine could no longer ignore her brilliance. Alexi Jo McCammond was officially placed on Forbes Magazine’s 2021 list of “THE TOP 30 PEOPLE UNDER THE AGE OF 30 TO WATCH.” Forbes Magazine explained this year’s very short, prestigious list of names thusly: “This 10th Anniversary ‘30 Under 30 List’ has become the definitive list of young people truly changing the world we live in.” And McCammond was doing just that: on a fast track to changing the world for the better.
Aside from reporting on the U. S. Congress and the White House, McCammond had long championed the rights of the downtrodden, the marginalized racial minorities in America -- the racially oppressed who have no power, no influence, no platform upon which to give voice to their collective suffering. She became their voice.
McCammond had come a long way in learning and mending her errant ways as a young child and naïve teenage ingénue. She is a self-proclaimed Christian, and her star was on the rise.

Just a few months ago, in March of 2021, the “Darling of the Media World,” Alexi McCammond, was just selected to be the next prestigious editor of the nationally-popular and culturally influential Teen Vogue Magazine . . . and then, suddenly . . . she was summarily fired for racial tweets she had made long-ago, as a young 17-year-old juvenile! The public, as well as the news media, was outraged at her dismissal for past adolescent mistakes.
The disturbing news caused an uproar across America -- and even the world -- with one British headline proclaiming: “Racist Tweets She Made at 17 Cost Dream Job at 27.”

Gandhi looked at him as a parent would a rude child and calmly replied, "You do not worry professor. I'll fly away," and he went and sat at another table. Mr. Peters, reddened with rage, decided to take revenge on the next test paper, but Gandhi responded brilliantly to all questions. Mr. Peters, unhappy and frustrated, asked him the following question. "Mr. Gandhi, if you were walking down the street and found a package, and within was a bag of wisdom and another bag with a lot of money, which one would you take?" Without hesitating, Gandhi responded, "The one with the money, of course."
Mr. Peters, smiling sarcastically, said, "I, in your place, would have taken wisdom, don't you think?”
Gandhi shrugged indifferently and responded, "Each one takes what he doesn't have."
Mr. Peters, by this time was beside himself and so great was his anger that he wrote on Gandhi's exam sheet the word "idiot" and gave it to Gandhi. Gandhi took the exam sheet and sat down at his desk trying very hard to remain calm while he contemplated his next move. A few minutes later, Gandhi got up, went to the professor and said to him in a dignified but sarcastically polite tone, "Mr. Peters, you signed the

After providing local youth free lunches and snacks for more than 15 months, the program will end on August 11th. If you have any questions, please call us at 760.433.8920. The program, started on May 4th, 2020, has provided curbside pickup of meals every weekday to community youth affected by food insecurity due to the pandemic. As a 17-year-old, McCammond had once tweeted that she expressed hope after a long night that she would not wake up in the morning with “swollen, Asian” eyes. She gave other examples.
Her unnecessary honesty confessing such regrettable events so far back into her youth was most commendable. It spoke highly of her and her willingness to be completely transparent. The Teen Vogue Magazine interview was impressive and McCammond was enthusiastically hired straight away.

Fatal Traffic Collision - Vista
On 08-03-21, at approximately 1:30 a. m. a black Honda Civic was traveling eastbound on Shadowridge Drive, approaching the controlled T-intersection at Sycamore Avenue. The driver and sole occupant, a 24year-old male, continued eastbound across Sycamore Avenue and collided into a concrete block retaining wall that sits along the east curb line of Sycamore Avenue. The driver was transported to Palomar Medical Center, Escondido where he succumbed to his injuries. The cause of the collision is still under investigation. Escondido Shooting Leaves One Dead - Alleged Shooter Hit By Car
On Sunday, August 1st, at about midnight, a fight broke out near Sr. Taquito Restaurant at 1620 E. Valley Parkway. One of the individuals involved in the altercation allegedly pulled a gun and fired it with the result of 28 year-old Gulrano Resendiz Ledesma being Escondido police wounded. responded and learned that Ledesma had been transported to the hospital where he died.
The shooting suspect attempted to flee the scene but was hit by a car and suffered serious injuries. He was transported to Palomar Medical Center . His identity is being withheld pending further police investigation. Any witnesses to the incident are asked to contact Detective

A lawsuit has been filed against the state of California seeking to avoid the shutting down of the San Pasqual Academy. The defendants are San Diego County’s Health and Human Services Agency and the California Department of Social Services. Plaintiffs include residents, staff and alumni of San Pasqual Academy.
The Academy has been in operation since 2001 and provides small group cottages for foster youth. It is licensed for 184 high school students and offers full time supervision. The county of San Diego owns the land occupied by the Academy.
The lawsuit alleges shutting down the academy violates the constitutional rights of the youths. It attacks County Supervisor Board Chairman Nathan Fletcher for having broken his pledge to “have the backs” of academy students. The suit further alleges that the several agencies chose to “ignore California law and refuse a license and funding for the operation of San Pasqual Academy in Escondido, California.”
So says Dr. Gregory Hurt, the always smiling and amiable dentist who heads up The San Marcos Dental Center at 162 S. Rancho Santa Fe Road in San Marcos.
Hortencia Ochoa joined Dr. Hurt’s staff in 1999 and has become a highly trained and talented dental assistant.

“I was curious and asked Dr. Hurt a lot of questions about the why’s and how’s of dentistry. He needed someone and offered to train me. I jumped at the chance and am so glad I did. It’s a tremendous office and staff with top training. I love what I do!” said Hortencia.
Hortencia and her husband live in San Marcos and have two daughters and one son.
“America has been good to me and my family,” she says. “We came here from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico in 1972. I was 11 years old. The suit goes on to argue that the academy is the “first of its kind comprehensive residential education for youth in the foster care system that has the statistically best results for such youth across all measurable categories.” The Old Palomar Hospital is Coming Down
Demolition has begun on the old “downtown” Palomar Hospital. Chain link fencing surrounds the old building and demolition crews are busy tearing down the internal elemtnts of the hospital.
Once the hospital interior has been demolished then the building itself will be taken down. Heavy equipment and crews are on site to speed things along, much to the dismay of many Escondido residents.
A new and brighter future is in store for the property. Integral Communities will build Palomar Heights, and will bring 510 units of new housing to the area which, it is hoped, will bring a new urban lifestyle to the area and serve as an economic boost for the downtown Escondido area. Palomar Heights will offer 162 forsale townhomes, 258 multifamily rental residences, 90 age-targeted apartments and recreational spaces as well as about 10,000 square feet of commercial space. A restaurant and sky bar with a 360 degree view.

As in most lives there were a few bumps in the road but Hortencia always handled them. “My mom always taught us to roll with the punches . . to work at life and to get ahead. Mom is doing fine . . but it’s quite an adjustment now that dad is gone. For all of us.” But I’m grateful for good health and great kids. Life is good!”

AS WITH ALEXI MCCAMMOND, CORPORATE AMERICA LEARNS TO “PLAY THE RACE CARD GAME.” Famous Black comedian and television host, Steve Harvey, lamented to Jerry Seinfeld in an interview, how Corporate America is so frightened of being called racist, that they all quickly learned to “play the race card game.” As Harvey explained: “And now you have the sponsors (advertisers). All the others have to piggyback and act righteous too: ‘Oh, they’re pulling their sponsorship?! Well, we gotta act like we care too’”
Harvey continues: “They (the sponsors) don’t REALLY care – they REALLY don’t care. But they know the rules of the game: they gotta ‘act’ offended too!” The sentiment being: That’s how the race card works. It scares people today into submission.
‘WHISTLE BLOWER’ IS A COWORKER & TEEN VOGUE STAFFER WHO DERAILED MCCAMMOND’S PLANS. The Teen Vogue senior staffer “who derailed Alexi McCammond’s hiring as the magazine’s new Editor-InChief has been identified as Christine Davitt.” (https://www.newsweek.com/) But what were the hidden facts (not entirely known) that took place behind-the-scenes? News sources reported that Teen Vogue coworker, Christine Davitt, had to dig more than ten years back in time to find the decade-old tweets from a young teen, Alexi, who had not even reached the legal age of adulthood.
Nonetheless, it was reported that Christine Davitt had ‘the goods’ on Alexi McCammond. What would normally be dismissed as a “childish oversight,” turned into a politicallyincorrect gallows just a few months ago today. Media research revealed that Davitt shared the tweet to other Teen Vogue coworkers and, as reported: “There was an internal revolt among the Teen Vogue staff after more than 20 employees sent a joint letter to Teen Vogue management at Conde Nast Publications condemning Alexi McCammond as a racist and thus unsuited as the newly-appointed Teen Vogue editor.” (The Daily Mail newspaper, London, England, Mar. 2021.) Davitt’s derailment of Alexi Jo MCammond worked like a charm.
Following the “racist” labeling from the 20 members of the Teen Vogue staff (and the two Teen Vogue advertisers and sponsors which quickly panicked and jumped overboard),

Condé Nast Publications decided to part ways with McCammond after having, “many difficult and important conversations” and not wanting to “overshadow the important work happening at Teen Vogue,” according to a retrieved company memo sent to the staff on March 18, 2021. On social media, the WOKE and Cancel Culture movement took the new shining star, Alexi McCammond, down to her knees, and placed her – as many stated -as just another conquered foe; another ‘notch’ on the guns of a mob who, as many claim, are the prevailing “Thought Police” in a vigilante society today.
As many observers phrased it: Alexi McCammond just became another rape victim, raped and pruned of her liberties, dignity, and her God-given Right to make honest mistakes. And then wrongfully condemned, humiliated, and fired as an adult for distant past transgressions as a youth. The Pittsburgh Post asked the fundamental question: “Is Moral Growth Allowed Anymore?”
AMERICA RISES TO RESCUE ALEXI MCCAMMOND & SHAMES TEEN VOGUE MAGAZINE, WOKE & CANCEL CULTURE. In real life, most stories such as this one do not have a fairy tale ending. Far from it. But in the case of this wronglyaccused “Golden Girl,” her unexpected Knight in Shining Armour came swiftly, in the collective actions from both the private and professional sectors across the United States. It was the day that many said: “WOKE and Cancel Culture enthusiasts could only blink and stand aside as America – in solidarity against tyranny -- finally stood straight and tall and said: ‘Enough is enough.’ You shall not have this one to wrongly degrade and conquer with injustice.”
ABANDONED, WITHOUT A JOB, AXIOS MEDIA, INC. WELCOMES HER WITH OPEN ARMS JUST WEEKS AGO! Just weeks ago today, as news spread (around the world) on the Reuters news services, the powerful American news outlet “Axios Media, Inc.” (which began airing on HBO in the United States and internationally), quickly stepped-in and re-hired McCammond (a former employee), and in the process: “Shamed Teen Vogue Magazine and the internet’s WOKE and Cancel Culture as self-righteous people,” and exposing them as such to a worldwide audience. “WE HAVE YOUR BACK, LEXI!” Nicholas Johnston, powerful Editor-In-Chief at Axios Media, Inc. personally knows Alexi (affectionately called “Lexi”) and proudly trumpeted to Alexi McCammond in a retrieved internal memo: “We have your back Lexi. And though the internet does not grant forgiveness, we do.”
Just weeks ago, on July 1, 2021 Alexi McCammond was quickly rehired by Axios, which released an official press statement confirming her appointment as socio-political journalist/reporter. Also, Axios co-founder and CEO, Jim VandeHei, said in a press release just days ago: “Alexi McCammond is an accomplished journalist and professional. We’re excited and proud that she is returning to Axios.”
McCammond will return to cover progressive politicians for Axios, along with the 2022 midterm elections. Axios Editorial Chief, Nicholas Johnston, shamed the so-called righteous WOKE and Cancel Culture movement with the following official press statement: “What’s unchanged is the Alexi we know, the one many of us worked with for over four years, who should not be defined by a mistake as a 17-year-old.”
The editor goes on to condemn the culture of “online trolls” that dug up McCammond’s tweets from 2011. The powerful and influential editor courageously defended and reclaimed the abandoned McCammond as one his own by stating: “The bottom line, most importantly, is that the initial attacks on Alexi were not about justice or equity. They were motivated by the mob. And as I have said before, the mob does not run this newsroom.” Johnston then repeated: “We have your back, Lexi. And though the internet does not grant forgiveness, we do.”
MANY AMERICANS SAY THE WORLD IS CHANGING FOR THE WORST. Many Americans in repeated polls are voicing widespread concern that America, as we know it, is slowly slipping away. And sadly, many are too frightened to voice their true feelings, especially in the workforce. Canadian journalist, Roy Arora, wrote in the New York Post: “Teenagehood is a critical period of self-growth and social maturation. It’s a time when we make our most mortifying errors, develop a moral code, and correct our worst flaws and impulses – or attempt to, anyway.
“These years are for partying, and learning about your sexuality. As a liberal society founded on Principles of Forgiveness, Mercy, and Second Chances, it has always been assumed that teenagers should be afforded the leeway to make mistakes, learn, and mature. “These principles . . . are rapidly eroding now.” (New York Post, Mar. 27, 2021.) EUROPE & THE WORLD WOULD LEARN A SHOCKING REVELATION! According to London’s Daily Mail newspaper, after Christine Davitt (and 20 coworkers) wrongfully toppled Alexi McCammond, the architect
accuser (Christine Davitt) breathed a sigh of relief, expressing on Twitter: “So proud of my @teenvogue colleagues. The work continued . . .” Then, after McCammond stepped down, Davitt further commented: “Exhales the deepest sigh I’ve ever sighed.”
Then, the London publication dropped a most ferocious and devastating bombshell for its wide European readership.
The accuser, Christine Davitt, was found guilty of racist remarks she, herself, kept secret. World newspapers corroborated the story and the global internet exploded in endless chatter.
THE DEVIL NOW COMES FOR THE LADY WITH THE PITCHFORK! Shockingly, a few days later, the WOKE and Cancel Culture mob finally came after the accuser, Christine Davitt, for her own profuse use of the ‘n’ word in her own past online remarks. Newspapers printed the latest twist of events, all with variations of the same theme: “The Devil Now Comes for the Lady With the Pitchfork!”
While Alexi McCommand was honest – her accuser, Christine Davitt, was not.
SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT. This story and narrative is NOT a tale of White vs. Black racial strife. This incident is not one which seeds divisiveness. On the contrary, this narrative brings all of us together on the encroaching danger of what newspapers warn: “No one is safe, anymore.” The initial ‘victim’ in this storyline was Alexi McCammond, fired from Teen Vogue for remarks she made as a mere 17-year-old regarding Asians. Alexi Jo McCammond is of mixed Irish and African-American heritage. (Irish on her mother’s side and Black on her father’s side.)
Her accuser, Christine Davitt, who profusely used of the ‘n’ word, is of mixed Asian heritage (viz identifies as Filipino/Filipina).
LESSON TO BE LEARNED. As the New York Post has warned us all: “No Sin Is Ever Forgiven in the Brave New ‘Woke’ World,” (March 18, 2021.) Many observers believe such mob mentality translates to harmful and divisive online “bullying” which sometimes leads to loss of jobs, loss of livelihoods, shaming, loss of self-esteem, emotional bullying, hate, psychological trauma, divisiveness -- and yes, even an increasing rate of suicides. There is widespread concern that social media has made it harder for teenagers to escape their worst moments. Such moments now follow them into their adult years. It is an ever-recurring vexation today that now seems without end.
As one email stated: “I know this well because only a year ago, I was a teenager. Over the years, many of my friends, peers and classmates have naturally said horrible things and acted in reprehensible ways. If any offense from adolescence that gets recorded online can be used as reasonable grounds for cancellation a decade later, then my whole generation is growing up with ticking time bombs, headed towards inevitable implosion.” AMERICA STILL HAS PROMISE. In the case of the wrongfullyaccused Alexi McCammond, fortunately, the world came to her defense, and rightfully so.
“Lexi” is doing exceedingly well covering Congress and the White House as a bright and savvy Political and Fact reporter and journalist.
And she still proudly displays her prized commendation which reads: “Emerging Black Journalist of the Year,” which was proudly bestowed upon her by the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). The National Association of Black Journalists are still extremely proud of their recipient. And well they should be.
Because, Alexi Jo McCammond, native of Chicago, Illinois, selfproclaimed Christian, and standing only 5’ 4” tall is, in fact, a true giant . . . standing tall and still championing the rights of the downtrodden, all people, of all colors, and making America better and equitable, and safer for you and me. Her rising star is . . . well, still ascending. And if the old saying is really true that you can judge a person’s wealth by how much they are loved by countless, anonymous people across America (and the world) . . .

The crisis at the Employment Development Department (EDD) is continuing. Many claimants had to wait months for their benefits, thousands have had their finances devastated, while others filed phony claims that reportedly defrauded the state of over $30 billion. The Executive Branch administers state agencies, but has taken no significant steps toward reforming EDD. The Legislative Branch has stepped into the breech, and I’m very happy that my office has been able to provide assistance to thousands of constituents. Since March of 2020 when the shutdowns began, we have handled over 2100 EDD cases, compared to just 4 in all of 2019. Over the past months, calls/emails regarding new EDD cases sometimes averaged over 100 a week. We’re still opening 50 or 60 new cases every week, along with constant EDD hiccups and glitches that generate dozens of follow-up contacts about supposedly resolved cases. As a result, each legislative office was authorized by Assembly Speaker Rendon to hire temporary employees to help with incoming EDD claims.
The Legislature is also taking steps toward EDD reform. Assembly Bill 12, which I co-authored with
Assemblymember Kelly Seyarto (R – Murrieta), will prevent fraud by requiring EDD and other agencies to stop including Social Security numbers in outgoing mail. Another bill that I supported, AB 110, requires crossreferencing new EDD claims with prison inmate Social Security numbers. This commonsense step would have prevented over $1 billion in fraudulent payments to inmates last year.
The EDD liaisons assigned to our office are knowledgeable and helpful, but they are saddled with an antiquated, inefficient system. The overall inability of EDD to meet its responsibilities in a timely and secure fashion has been disastrous for thousands of Californians. This crisis will likely be over before legislative fixes take effect, but we can make sure this never happens again. The number of COVID-19 cases has risen dramatically over the last month. Unfortunately, one of the main reasons is due to the growing prevalence of the Delta Variant. According to our County Public Health Officials, the Delta variant is more contagious. There is some good news. Thankfully, hospitalizations and the need for ICU beds remain well within the ability of our local healthcare system to handle. A main reason for this is because more than two-thirds of San Diego County is fully vaccinated. According to San Diego County’s Public Health officials, the risk from the Delta variant is lower for those who are fully vaccinated. Throughout the last year, we have done an excellent job protecting the most vulnerable and it shows with over 86% of seniors 65 years & older having been fully vaccinated. While I’m against vaccine passports and don’t believe this should be forced upon anyone, I am encouraging all eligible San Diegans to get the shot. With the Delta variant prevalent throughout the County, now is the time for those who having been waiting, to get the vaccine. Our wonderful healthcare workers
have developed a safe and effective vaccine in a record amount of time. Now we must do our part. Let’s beat this virus once and for all, by getting the shot. Q: Uber is charging me $98 for a ride in Los Angeles. But I only agreed to pay $20 for it. The system kept glitching when I was on the app. I denied all of the high offers and took the lowest. They also canceled two drivers who were under $20. Can you help me get a $78 refund, please? -- Darrick Collins, Inglewood, Calif. A: Uber's app should have charged you what it said it would -- not a penny more.
But you have to keep in mind what Uber is trying to get. It wants to extract the most money it can from each ride. When I enter a destination on my Uber app on St. Simons Island, Georgia, it offers several choices, including the less expensive UberX and the slightly roomier -- and pricier -- UberXL. But in California, Uber <a href="https://www.uber.com/blog/c alifornia/upcoming-changes-to-thedriver-app/">displays its rates differently</a>, which appears to be what happened to you. The system allowed drivers to set a higher rate, which most passengers rejected. Uber disabled the system that allowed drivers to set a higher fare multiplier. It appears that when you requested your ride, you had several cars that set a higher fare multiplier. You turned them down but somehow still got matched with one of the more expensive drivers. That's a glitch.
When you notified Uber, it should have quickly corrected the problem. It did not. You made numerous efforts to contact Uber, but it still didn't help. Fortunately, I list the names, numbers and email addresses of the <a href="https://www.elliott.org/company-contacts/uber/">Uber customer service contacts</a> on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org. This is one of those rare problems that Uber seems to have fixed for its users before I contacted them. But it kind of forgot to take care of the problems it created for some of its users before the policy change. When you're dealing with hundreds of thousands of trips, as Uber does, it's easy to lose track of complaints like yours. But that's no excuse. You could have reached out to Uber or initiated a credit card dispute. You kept a thorough paper trail, although you didn't have screenshots of your accepted rides. It's unrealistic to expect anyone to take a screenshot of a transaction that appears successful. But you almost have to do that nowadays. Otherwise, a company like Uber can overcharge you by $78.

Q: Last year, I paid a $750 deposit for three tickets on a Carnival cruise from Los Angeles to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. After the COVID-19 outbreak, Carnival canceled its cruises. Carnival refunded one of the deposits. It sent me a letter stating we had until May 2021 to decide whether to accept a full refund or reschedule a cruise and get $500 additional cruise credit.
But somewhere along the line, they decided to change the offer without informing their customers. When I asked a representative said they had an internal email that they decided to deny refunds to anyone that had canceled more than 90 days before the cancellation. Now they are refusing our refund. Can you help me get my $500 deposit back? -- Bessie Walker, Waipahu, Hawaii A: Carnival, like all other cruise lines, suspended operations during the COVID-19 pandemic. It offered a choice of a refund or a future cruise credit. The offer changed over time, which led to some confusion for the cruise line, as well as travel agents and passengers. Yours appears to be one of those cases. Carnival's records show that you canceled your booking 68 days before it suspended its operations. It offered you no refund but said you qualified for a $150 "early saver credit" for each booking.
However, your phone records suggest you contacted Carnival on April 18, more than a month after it announced its suspension. You indicated at the time that you intended to accept the future $500 onboard credit offered by Carnival. Here's the problem: Carnival's emails to you were clear about its refund process. It had "fully automated" the refund and credit process, "avoiding the need to call us."
"We urge you to carefully review this information and follow the online process, as calling us will not expedite your request," it added. I'm not sure if Carnival wanted you to call. Phoning it may have led to some confusion about the timing of your rebooking request. And since a phone call generates no paper trail, it's really Carnival's word against yours.
You said it should be Carnival's responsibility to provide an exact date and name of the person you called and canceled the booking, as well as a transcript. But unfortunately, that's not how it works. Although companies like Carnival have sophisticated call center technology that generates transcripts and track each conversation, the only way to access it is with a court order. And no one is going to hire a lawyer over a $500 deposit; it's not cost-effective.

The ‘Boys’ Who Covered World War II
Few journalists have ever witnessed world history more closely than Edward R. Murrow and William L. Shirer. Together, they reported the horrors of World War II, before, during and after. Murrow first gained prominence prior to World War II with a series of live radio broadcasts from Europe for the news division of CBS radio. Edward R. Murrow Shirer was the first of the so called "Murrow's Boys,” a team of CBS broadcast journalists who provided news coverage during World War II and many years William L. Shirer afterward.
From 1937 until the end of 1940 Shirer covered the rise of Nazi Germany for CBS. He later wrote a successful 1941 memoir about those years, Berlin Diary. Today it is a must-read for students of World War II’s history.
At first, CBS prohibited correspondents from reporting first hand. That ended in March 1938 when Shirer was in Vienna. After weeks of mounting pressure by Nazi Germany on the Austrian government, German troops controlled Austrian state radio prohibiting Shirer’s broadcasts. Shirer flew to London where he broadcast the first uncensored eyewitness account of the Austrian annexation. The next day, CBS's New York headquarters asked Shirer and Murrow to produce a European roundup, a 30minute broadcast featuring live reporting. “The CBS World News Roundup” is still on the air each morning and evening, broadcasting's oldest network news series. Murrow became a popular nightly radio voice broadcasting from a rooftop in London as the city was being bombed by Nazi aircraft. The dramatic sounds of bombs bursting in the background during Murrow’s broadcasts brought the “Battle of Britain” to America.
As the CBS World News segment grew Murrow’s original “Boys” team became familiar to the American audience. The team included: Eric Sevareid covered the 1940 fall of France and the London Blitz, later covering the war's progress in Great Britain, Italy, and Germany. Larry LeSueur covered the Battle of Britain “Blitz,” the Eastern
Front, and key battles in France. Charles Collingwood covered the North African campaign, and the liberation of France. Richard C. Hottelet covered Allied progress in Great Britain, France, and Germany. Howard K. Smith covered Germany and later reported from Switzerland and France. Winston Burdett covered Eastern Europe, North Africa, and Italy. Wire service reporter Walter Cronkite was invited to be one of “the Boys.” At first, he accepted the CBS offer, but when he informed the United Press he was leaving, Cronkite’s boss countered with a raise. He stayed at UP, which angered Murrow creating a riff that lasted for years. Several “Boys” were assigned to accompany Allied forces on D-Day. Hottelet rode along in a bomber over Utah Beach during the initial phase of the invasion. Collingwood covered Utah Beach, as did Larry LeSueur from a separate landing craft. They had difficulty finding working mobile transmitters and no correspondents of any network were able to report live from Normandy until over a week after the initial landings.
During the War, the group maintained close ties with Murrow but not necessarily each other. They had significant autonomy in filing reports, and while they had been influential in developing the field of radio news broadcasting, later they were reluctant to make the transition to television. The “Murrow Boys” liked far more working in radio than in television. They resented the process of lights, cameras, makeup, and other aspects of TV broadcasting. By the 1950s their dominating presence in the field had begun to decline. Hottelet had the longest career at CBS, joining in 1944 and reported news until 1985. A legendary dispute between Shirer and Murrow started in 1947 when the maker of shaving soap withdrew sponsorship from Shirer's Sunday news show. Murrow, who was then vice president for public affairs, and CBS head William S. Paley, did not seek another sponsor. CBS stopped producing the show within a month. CBS always maintained Shirer resigned, but Shirer said he was essentially forced out.
The friendship between Shirer and Murrow never recovered. Shirer's daughter, Inga, once described how Murrow, who was suffering from terminal lung cancer, tried to heal the breach by inviting Shirer and his wife to his farm in 1964. Murrow tried to discuss the breach, but Shirer steered the conversation away. They never had another opportunity to speak before Murrow’s death in 1965. Shirer's daughter reported that shortly before her father's death in 1993, he continued to rebuff attempts to learn the source of the breach that occurred some 45 years earlier. Shirer died Dec. 26, 1993, age 89. William L. Shirer The world history reported by Murrow and his ‘Boys’ has never been equaled in journalism, nor is it likely to every be repeated

And while I appreciated this woman’s effort to make me feel better, she had in fact told one of the most disturbing old-lady stories I’d ever heard, with no discernible takeaway moral. I couldn't help it, I started laughing. Which made her start laughing. Which made us both laugh so hard that we couldn’t catch our breath, and I somehow forgot all about being afraid.
Today, a lifetime later, I crept into Mary’s bedroom to find her sleeping. Her hospice nurse was making notes on a clipboard. I stood at Mary’s bedside and retold the entire story. When I finished, her weary eyes eased open. She looked at me. She lightly held my hand, and she smiled before falling back into a deep sleep. Well. Now my cup runneth over, too.

Sunset magazine called the play "a pageant in the wilderness" and "one of the most remarkable outdoor pageants in all of California." A review in the San Diego Tribune noted that illumination was provided by kerosene lamps and automobile headlights. In 1917, Frazee was asked to stage his pageant as a fund-raiser for a new art gallery in Laguna. Years earlier, artist Frazee had painted the first known watercolor of Laguna Beach, attracting the attention of a growing art colony in Orange County.
The entry of the U.S. into World War I put a hold on the pageant until 1921 when Frazee made the trip to Laguna to re-stage the pageant, which has since remained there. Frazee died in 1942 but left behind volumes of memoirs, photos, scripts and programs, most of which are at the Valley Center History Museum. He is buried locally.

Last year, we experienced multiple power outages. When the power is out, requests for fire, police, medical and other public services increase. We encourage residents to learn to be selfreliant in an emergency. Here are a few power outage tips:

Check your home’s circuit breakers or fuses first. Contact the local electric utility to report an outage. Stay at least 10 feet away from power lines on the ground as electricity might still be flowing through the lines. Unplug appliances and computers if possible and turn off non-essential lights. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to preserve food. Treat intersections as four-way stops when traffic lights are out. At it, veterans who served on active duty regardless of location during the Vietnam Era, officially defined as November 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975, received a Vietnam Veteran Lapel Pin. The pin is defined as “A Lasting Memento of the Nation’s Thanks.”
It was a very moving ceremony as we heard stories from both men and women about their experiences during this time. It made me feel proud to acknowledge their service to our nation. As many of you know, the nation was divided over this conflict and so they returned not to parades but rather scorn. The ceremony last week was not at a level they deserve, but it was certainly a step in the right direction. The Internet and social media impact on American culture. Part III of ? WHERE DO WE GET OUR BIASES (PREJUDICE)
Bias or prejudice: These are interchangeable terms describing real time opinions or actions influenced by preconceived mindsets.
Mindsets expressed as bias or prejudice can be innate or natural such as an aversion to loud noises or a preference for the familiar over the unfamiliar. A bias might be learned directly from experience like touching your tongue to a flag pole on a cold winter day or taught to us by others like learning that bottles marked with a skull and cross bones are not for tasting.
Innate biases exist throughout nature and are behavioral shortcuts that allow us to act quickly without
Today at the store I watched a young guy hold the door open for a mother of three. He trotted ahead and threw open the door with a grand flourish as if to say, “After you, mademoiselle.” The woman stopped cold in her steps. She had a baby on her hip, a toddler holding her hand, and her oldest child was bringing up the rear, finger shoved in his nose. The woman was young, her clothes had food stains on them, and she looked like she hadn’t slept since the last papal installation. “Thanks,” she said. And her face was bright red. What I want to know is why.
Why did this young man perform this small act of goodwill? After all, I’m sure the kid has a chaotic life just like the rest of us. I’m sure he was in a hurry. He had important stuff going on, places to be, people to text. So why did he take 12 seconds out of his day to help a stranger?
Furthermore, what purpose did this nicety really accomplish within the grand schematic of existence?
Let’s be honest here. Did this woman need help opening a door? Not really. We are talking about a woman with

the burden of reasoned decision making. These natural biases evolved through the ages to support existential imperatives like survival and reproduction. The mechanisms or templates that support innate behavioral shortcuts are hard wired into our DNA. While the mechanism for bias or decision making “shortcuts” are part of our nature, civilization has forced us to substitute less brutal action to support these primal instincts. Today it is illegal for a man to seduce an attractive female by clubbing her and dragging her by the hair into a cave. Today while the objective may be the same, methods are entirely different. Society has evolved rules and practices that require both men and women to employ more expensive and less direct seduction technology. That’s certainly progress. Our biases are reflected in the entire range of human activity and interaction. Where I grew up in Wayne County Indiana (named for “Mad” Anthony Wayne”) we had one “city” (pop. 40,000), three “towns” (pop. 2000) and eight “boonies” (under 1000). It was common knowledge among the high school kids in our “town” Centerville, that the “city” girls were whores and the boys punks, that “boonies” boys and girls were “hicks”, and the kids in the other two “towns” were an unsavory mixture of both. Only Centerville had good people. All of us had friends or relatives from those other communities but we regarded them as “exceptions to the rule” and not effecting our bias against the rest. That bias is “tribalism”
perfectly functional opposable thumbs. She had plenty of options when it came to opening a door for herself.
She could have (a) set her kid down and simply opened the door. Or she could have (b) told the oldest kid to quit digging for nasal gold and open the door. And of course there’s always (c) using her foot. The hack journalist in me was curious, so I approached the kid and asked why he opened the door. His first reaction was embarrassment. Then he added, “Aw, it was really nothing, man.” Nothing.
Astounding. Because it didn’t look like nothing. If this act was indeed nothing, then why did it make me feel good all over? Why did I come home and write several paragraphs about a kid I’ll likely never meet again? I’ll tell you why: to meet my daily word count. But also because being nice is not nothing. Kindness, by definition, is the exact opposite of “nothing.” Yesterday, I went to get my haircut.
Our biased affection for the familiar and bias against the less familiar are the non- rational, tribalistic feelings that fuel our loyalties to our community, school, state, military service branch, nationality, ethnicity, sex, football team, rock star and NASCR driver to name just a few. There is a flip side to favorable bias in that it engenders a negative bias or prejudice against things not favored.
Biases are inherent and natural mechanisms that assist in making decisions without going through a process of full reasoned analysis of all the factors. Those biases positive
Before my appointment I sat in the waiting room, reading a 17-year-old dry-rotted copy of “Woman’s World.” Meantime, I watched a hair stylist cut an old man’s hair, making conversation, and just generally being cheerful. The man spoke with labored speech, and half his face was paralyzed. I was thinking maybe he’d had a recent stroke.
When the haircut was finished, the stylist removed his cape and told the man the haircut was free. The old man couldn’t believe it. He did what most decent guys would’ve done and removed $20 from his pocket. The stylist said, “No. Please. I don’t want your money.”
He insisted; she refused. They did this little dance for several minutes until the man finally gave up and thanked her, then turned to leave. But before he exited, do you know what he did?

For the past several weeks my motherin-law has been lying in her sickbed under hospice care. Nurses are constantly checking her stats, administering meds, and telling us to prepare ourselves for death. We have spent these last days holed up in a house just waiting. At times it’s been exhausting. Sometimes it’s been tough just remembering to eat regularly, let alone to keep writing mediocre columns. But that’s where you stepped in. Over the past weeks you have flooded my family with emails, texts, messages, greeting cards, letters, care packages, anonymous pizza deliveries, bouquets, grocery drop-offs, and acts of kindness. And all this kindness, to be perfectly honest, sometimes makes me feel sort of ashamed. Because sometimes I forget how good people are.
The old man handed the lady cash and said with strained speech, “Your haircut is on me today, ma’am.”
Sometimes it’s too easy to notice only the bad in this world. Sometimes it’s just simpler to focus on sadness. Sometimes it’s more convenient to see unfairness, injustice, and all the depraved souls who commit senseless acts of daytime television.
But that’s not the point. What I’m getting at is: why? Why all this goodwill toward men? What’s it all about?
But then you come along. Smiling. Holding open the door. No, you might not be changing the entire world. But if you ask me, you are showing the world how such a thing can so easily be done.

The woman appeared moved by his generosity. She thanked him and didn’t even bother explaining that no procedure involving women’s hair ever costs less than, at minimum, $250.
And the reason I ask is because all these charitable people you encounter aren’t just random folks. These are your neighbors. Your coworkers. Your family. You are one of these people.
Sometimes I begin to have my doubts about our species. Sometimes I lose my way.
So don’t tell me it’s nothing.
