Like those most painful and agonized memories forever kept alive by countless thousands of Holocaust Memorials and Museums located in every civilized country in the world today, so also do Americans refuse to forget our most painful memories of those who perished on September 11, 2001. More than 1,000 phone calls were made in just 10 minutes after the first plane, American Airline Flight The Paper - 760.747.7119

It is the will of the American people and, most importantly, to the survivors and relatives of those who died, that these final voice recordings and transcripts be preserved so that we may never forget.

It salutes the nearly 3,000 people who died during the attack, including those from the Pentagon, American Airline Flight 11, United Flight 175, American Airline Flight 77, United Airline Flight 93, and all First Responders who risked their own lives, and died, in their efforts to help others.

The 9/11 Memorial Museum is such a powerful attraction with the public that even with advanced ticket sales (which supports the 9/11 Memorial), the tours are overflowed, seven days a week, with excess capacity crowds – all wishing to learn more, never forget, and forever honor their precious American fellow-Americans who perished – the brothers and sisters to us all.

Herewith, are some of the most listened-to audio recordings at the museum exhibit, comprising the “Final 9/11 Messages to Loved Ones” from the World Trade Center and the hijacked commercial airliners.

on the line to 911 emergency dispatchers.

At the time, Cosgrove was vice president of the Aon Corporation located on the 105th floor of the South Tower (WTC 2) before his entire building collapsed, just 56 minutes after being hit.

From his office location, he is unaware that the adjacent North Tower (WTC 1) was just hit on its north façade by the hijacked American Airline Flight 11 at precisely 8:46 a.m. (Eastern Standard Time).

But he is was clearly aware of the huge, thunderous sound he had just heard, and the billowing black smoke beginning to build all about him. Shortly after 8:46 a.m. he calls his wife Wendy, but keeps composed on the phone to, ostensibly, protect her from any worry or panic. Yet she seems to suspect something as he tells her how much he loves her. And she becomes more suspicious when he asks her to tell their two small girls, Elizabeth age 4, Claire age 9, and his oldest boy Brian age 12, how much he loves all of them.

Just wanting to hear her voice, he stays calm, and warmly ends the call expressing his love and that he’ll be coming home early.

Although short on details, Kevin Cosgrove and his coworkers had heard the mysterious impact, and are quickly becoming alarmed at how fast the black billowing smoke and heat is becoming. Unknown to Cosgrove and coworkers at the time, at precisely 8:46 a.m., the adjacent North Tower in the World Trade Center 1, was struck by the hijacked American Airline Flight 11 flown by al-Qaeda terrorists onboard. Unseen by him, they had made their approach by flying south over Manhattan, and then plunged the plane (loaded with 20,000 gallons of jet fuel) into the north façade at 440 mph, slicing between the 93rd and 99th floors, instantly killing hundreds of people and trapping hundreds more on higher floors. Shortly before 9 a.m., Kevin Cosgrove frantically calls the 9-1-1 emergency operator. COSGROVE: “My wife thinks I’m all right. I called and said I was leaving the building and that I was fine . . .”

(At precisely 9:03 a.m. just minutes into their emergency call conversation, the operator hears a very loud boom on the other end, and Cosgrove’s call abruptly ends. The operator is unaware that Cosgrove’s South Tower (World

Despite being hit (after) the North Tower was struck, the South Tower collapses first because of the greater number of lower floors, closer to the base of the building, supporting the structure. Pedestrians on the ground are running away from the Trade Center Complex as the 110-story South Tower (which Kevin Cosgrove is in) collapses in a rubble.

COSGROVE: “Doesn’t feel like it, man! I got kids! There’s smoke really bad now!”

As people on the group are running away from the building complex, running towards the Hudson River, the debris cloud engulfs them.

On 8/24/2021, the Escondido Police Department conducted a Shoulder Tap Operation. Shoulder Tap Operations are when minors (persons under the age of 21) stand outside stores that sell alcohol and ask adults to buy them alcohol. These types of operations are part of a program utilized by ABC and local law enforcement agencies used to detect and deter shoulder tap activity. State law prohibits the furnishing of alcohol to a minor, which is a misdemeanor violation of Business & Professions Code 25658(a). The following results are from Tuesday’s operation:

A man who was rescued from a burning car after he allegedly pummeled his mother to death with a hammer appeared in court Tuesday to face a murder charge.

The checkpoint was held at Lincoln Avenue and Fig Street from 6 p.m. to midnight. 35 drivers were cited for operating a vehicle unlicensed or with a suspended/revoked license, 865 vehicles were contacted. Checkpoint locations are based on a history of crashes and DUI arrests.

John Christopher Burns, 49, faces up to 36 years to life in state prison when he is sentenced March 29 next year for the Jan. 27, 2020, killing of Jose De Jesus Martinez.

The 32-year-old victim was stabbed in the neck shortly before 6:30 p.m. outside the Burger King on West Valley Parkway.

Retired Navy SEAL’s post about Afghanistan, imagining he was president, goes viral

Jocko Willink, a retired Navy SEAL, took to Instagram to post a brief video last Monday imagining he was the U.S. commander-inchief during an address to the nation about the Afghanistan calamity and steps that he would take to resolve the problem. The Biden administration has been on the receiving end of sharp criticism from those who say the U.S. withdrawal could hardly have gone any worse. Jen Psaki, the White House press officer, grew visibly annoyed during a briefing when she was asked about "stranded" Americans. She said it was inaccurate to say they are stranded and reconfirmed the U.S. commitment to bring home every American who

September 02, 2021

He admitted that he made "critical errors" in underestimating the Taliban's capabilities. He said the blame was on him alone. He admitted that the Americans and Afghan allies were stranded, but said they "will not be for long."

He spent most of the speech proving the steps he would take to rectify the problem. "In the next 48 hours, America will be in control of most major airports in Afghanistan," he said. "Any resistance we meet from the Taliban or otherwise—when we seize these airports—will be destroyed completely and without mercy." He said gaining control of these airports will allow U.S. forces to conduct swift rescue missions throughout the country.

"Any person who interferes with these operations will be killed," he said. He also said he would order troops to either retake or destroy weapons and equipment left behind by fleeing Afghan troops.

Man Rescued from Burning Car Charged with Murdering his Mother

Sean Devin McCarthy, 29, is accused of killing his mother on June 8, the same day Escondido police found him inside a car on fire in the 1800 block of Foothill View Place. One Arrested at Escondido DUI Checkpoint

Escondido Police arrested one driver while conducting a DUI checkpoint on Saturday, August 21, 2021.

The primary purpose of checkpoints is to promote public safety by deterring impaired drivers.

"Any person utilizing, guarding, or located in close proximity to these weapons or equipment will be killed," he said.

He said once the Americans and Afghans are extracted and the weapons either retrieved or destroyed, the U.S. will leave the country. But he vowed to keep a close eye on possible terrorist activities or human rights violations by employing surveillance technology. He also said the U.S. will support freedom fighters in the country through airstrikes and with Special Forces units. He said the U.S. will continue the support until the enemy is no longer a threat to America or "the good people of Afghanistan." •••• Our Friedrich Gomez, a Navy veteran, and prolific writer read the above story and offered these thoughts: That's my Navy Seals! Kevin Cosgrove’s remains were found in the rubble. He was buried on September 22, 2001 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Huntington, New York.

FINAL CALLS TO LOVED ONES FROM FLIGHT 93. CeeCee Lyles, mother of four, was a flight attendant on the ill-fated United Airlines Flight 93 on September 11, 2001. It was hijacked by terrorists just fifteen minutes after departing Newark, New Jersey en route to San Francisco, California.

She desperately dialed home, twice, on her mobile phone to speak to her husband.

He heard her message later, after she had died.

CEE-CEE LYLES: “Hi, baby. I’m . . . honey, you have to listen to me, very carefully. I’m on a plane that’s hijacked. I’m on the plane. I’m calling from the plane. I want to tell you that I love you. Please tell the children that I love them very much. And honey, I’m so very sorry. I don’t know what to say. There’s three guys, they’ve hijacked the plane . . . we’ve turned around and I heard there have been planes that have already flown into the World Trade Center. I hope to see your face again, baby. I love you. Bye.” Of the four aircraft hijacked on September 11, United Airlines Flight 93 was the only one that did not reach the hijacker’s intended target, which many suspect was the White House at the U. S. Capitol

During the passenger’s attempt to reclaim the airliner, it crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, about 65 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, and 130 miles northwest of Washington, D. C., killing all 44 people onboard, including the four hijackers. It is believed they prevented an

Here is another passenger’s final phone call to his mother on the same hijacked plane as Cee Cee Lyles.

He is in mid-flight. On the very same Flight 93 as Cee Cee Lyles, already mentioned. His mother is waiting for him to arrive at San Francisco International Airport in California. Mark is fully-aware that his Flight 93 was overtaken by al-Qaeda terrorists. And knows about the Twin Tower airplane crashes in New York from other cell phone callers on his plane.

He is scared and wants to talk with his mother, one last time. He knows he’s going to die. learned from their cell phones that two planes had already struck the World Trade Center Towers in New York. They all knew, including Mark, that they were about to die in a similar fate.

Mark saw flight attendant Sandra Bradsaw boiling water to throw on the hijackers.

He overheard fellow passenger Jeremy Glick call home and tell his wife Lyz on his mobile phone that they were planning to storm the cockpit. “I have my butter knife from breakfast,” he heard him tell his wife. He also heard first-class passenger Tony Burnett call home at the rear of the airplane, telling his wife that a passenger had already been stabbed earlier by the terrorist, and that the passenger just died. In mid-flight, Mark makes a final goodbye call to his mother, Alice Hoglan.

His mother immediately knows that her son is emotionally distraught when she first hears the timbre in his voice, although he tried to sound calm.

Mrs. Alice Hoglan’s son Mark, age 31, was forever gone.

For the reminder of her life, she never reconciled herself to the fact that parents are supposed to die first, not their children.

On December 22, 2020, at age 71, Mark’s mother Alice Hoglan, passed away in her sleep just before Christmas. She was not just a mom; she was a “rugby mom” who cheered and supported all his games.

Mark’s surviving rugby team members said: “She is now with her son Mark in Heaven.” “I LOVE YOU, MOMMY, GOODBYE.” Daphne Bowers of Brooklyn, New York, was full of anxiety and nearly hyper-ventilating when she showed up at Bellevue Hospital with a small framed picture of her daughter Veronique, 28.

Sobbing uncontrollably, panicstruck, and near physical collapse, she was being held up and supported by two of her closest friends.

At the hospital, Mrs. Bowers told anyone who would listen that her daughter had been wearing a white jacket and black shirt when she had gone to work at the World Trade Center on Tuesday. ''She called me when the building was on fire!'' Bowers managed to blurt out. ''She called me and said: 'Mommy, the building is on fire, there's smoke coming through the walls. I can't breathe.' “Then I heard her scream, ‘Mommy! Mommy! I’m trapped!’” Her mother remembers: “The last thing she said was: 'I love you, Mommy, goodbye.''' Her daughter died that day.

They hate bullies. Hate men who hit women, abuse kids, or any coward who picks on someone smaller.

There are other watering holes favored by SEALS such as Danny's Palm Bar and Grill in Coronado. And also, Ye Olde Plank in Imperial Beach. But Coronado's Mc P's Irish Pub & Grill remains the most popular by far. It's here that SEALS come with their family and kids (and dogs) when they return home from an overseas mission.

During my 4-year-hitch in CIC (Combat Information Center) on various warships, SEALS are among the most respected. There is nothing more satisfying than bringing SEALS back to safety onboard our warships from amphibious water rafts. (Just as satisfying as safely guiding-back and bringing home a strafed/wounded jet fighter with our radar shields and Airborne Warning and Control system (AEW&C). It never stopped being emotional for me. It never got routine where I stopped shedding a tear or two at our fighting units returning to safe haven within our Ship's Battle Group. Because they're my family. My brothers. My blood. My fellow Americans. And we kept each other alive.

I pray to God we stop turning our backs on our U. S. flag, our national anthem, and not taking care of our veterans.

Cancer Patients’ Bill of Rights

Approximately 187,000 Californians are diagnosed with cancer each year. Cancer is the second-leading cause of death in our state, exceeded only by heart disease. Unfortunately, in many underserved areas there is a disconnect between recent medical advances and patient access to lifesaving quality care.

There are hundreds of different types of cancer, requiring a vast array of complex treatments. Increasingly, cancer care is dependent on genetic and genomic testing individualized for each patient. Early diagnosis, appropriate choice of therapies and access to clinical trials are often keys to a lifesaving cure. With many cancer patients unable to benefit from these advances, it is imperative that the Legislature make clear its support for prioritizing timely access to expert care. That’s why I’m a proud supporter of Senate Concurrent Resolution 11 (SCR 11), which expresses support for the Cancer Patients’ Bill of Rights, that proclaims cancer patients have the right to: a) Fully understand their diagnoses and be informed about treatment options in culturally appropriate and understandable languages

b) Transparent and timely processes that ensure direct access to oncology specialists, diagnostic testing, and

accurate interpretations of those tests

c) Timely access to cancer subspecialists who have expertise in the treatment of subtypes of cancers when complex decisions are needed d) Direct and prompt access to medical treatments for pain management and other services that support overall health

e) Direct access to National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers and leading academic medical centers for managing complex cancers that require multiple experts or high-risk emerging therapies

f) Timely access to relevant clinical trials, medical research, and cutting-edge innovation,, including evidence-supported precision medicine

As your Assembly representative, I will continue my efforts to ensure accessible health care for all Californians. The Cancer Patients’ Bill of Rights is an important step in that direction. Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

I pray every night that I will dream of you, so that I can just see your face and your beautiful smile once again. “When you left, you took a big part of me with you. I feel like I’m not the same person anymore.”

OUR FINAL VOICE RECORDING. Melissa “Missy” Doi, age 32, was a graduate of Northwestern University, with dreams of becoming a ballerina. She was on the 83rd floor of Tower Two (the South Tower) when she frantically called 9-1-1.

MELISSA: “It’s very hot, I see . . . I don’t see . . . I don’t see any air anymore!” 9-1-1 DISPATCHER: “Okay . . .” MELISSA: “All I see is smoke!”

9-1-1 DISPATCHER: “Okay dear, I’m so sorry, hold on for a sec, stay calm with me, stay calm, listen, listen, the call is in, I’m documenting, hold on one second please . . .” MELISSA: aren’t I?”

“I’m going to die,

9-1-1 DISPATCHER: “No! No! No! No! No! No! No . . . say your prayers, ma’am.”

MELISSA: “We’re on the floor and we can’t breathe. And it’s very, very, very hot!” (As the South Tower continued to burn, Melissa begins to plea with the operator.)

years for Melissa’s remains to be found in the rubble. Near the end of the 24 ½-minute phone call to the emergency dispatcher, Melissa asked the operator to please setup a three-way call so she can speak to her mother one last time.

The dispatcher tells Melissa they are unable to put her mother on the phone because they do not have a three-way system capability. As smoke began to overcome her, Melissa spells out her mother’s name and says her phone number in hopes of passing on a last message to her mom.

Later, after emergency dispatchers lost voice contact with Melissa, the operator who last spoke with her, contacted Melissa’s mother. Her mother was informed that her daughter managed to give a final message for her while she was still trapped alive in the stairwell.

MELISSA: “I’m going to die!”

9-1-1 DISPATCHER: “Now look. Stay calm, stay calm . . . stay calm . . . stay with me!” MELISSA: “Please God . . .”

The phone call abruptly ends as Tower Two collapses. It took three

A character most unforgettable

On my "Most Unforgettable Character" list, the late Fred Swearengen of Carlsbad had all of the qualifications to hold that title. When he entered the room all eyes went to him because we all knew there would be a few good stories and funny jokes on the way.

Fred led a colorful life both as a World War II decorated Navy dive bomber pilot and as a National Football League official.

With great emotion and with a quivering voice that occasionally broke, the 9-1-1 dispatcher struggled through and read the message out loud to her mother, as he had promised to do.

At the National 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York, Melissa “Miss” Doi is memorialized at the South Park Pool area, on Panel S46 where her story and voice recording is told.

CONCLUSION: This cover story is dedicated to the National September 11 Memorial Museum and The Never Forget Fund in New York and to all the precious lives lost and to their families, friends, and relatives. And to promise to honor the request: “If we don’t make it out alive, please never forget us.”

Which is the embodiment and pledge carried forth by the official “911 Never Forget Fund.” And also at the request by surviving family, friends, and relatives who inspired me to write this story for The Paper.

This is the 181st cover story written by Friedrich Gomez and I don’t think I’ve ever read a more powerful, more moving story.

He is someone very special to The Paper and to us personally. Well done, Friedrich. Very well done.

NFL supervisor of officials Art McNally, who was in the press box. Swearingen emerged and made his ruling that the play was a touchdown. The Steelers went on to win 13-7, much to the outrage of Oakland fans.

"Because of that call, my name is boldly written on every crapper wall in Oakland. (Then) Oakland Raiders head coach John Madden has never forgiven me,” Fred told me with a hearty laugh. During World War II action in the Pacific, Navy dive bomber pilot Lt.(jg) Swearengen held the Navy Cross, the highest battle honor of the service, right below the Congressional Medal of Honor. He also was awarded four Distinguished Flying Crosses, and four Air Medals.

"You got an Air Medal for every five times you flew against the enemy," Fred told me. "I guess the Navy figured if you survived that many flights, you deserved it. Hell, if you got to chow on time, the Navy recommended you for a medal." During the War, Fred was stationed aboard Vice Adm. Marc Mitscher's carrier flagship, the USS Bunker Hill. He took his dive-bombing training at North Island Naval Air Station and, because of the war time shortage of accommodations, he was berthed at the nearby historic Hotel del Coronado.

The message said: “Tell my mother that I love her and that she’s the best mom in the whole world!”

MELISSA: “Can you stay on the line with me? I feel like I’m going to die!”

9-1-1 DISPATCHER: “You gotta think positive, because you gotta help each other get off the floor!”

September 02, 2021

When not on the gridiron officiating Fred operated Swearingen's Sporting Goods in Athens, Ohio. He spent his retired years here in Carlsbad. He was born Sept. 25, 1921, and was an official for the National Football League, serving as both a referee and field judge from 1960 through 1981. Fred officiated Super Bowls III and XIII, but he'll be most remembered by sports fans for making the controversial call that has become a legend in football history. It is known as "the Immaculate Reception." It was a touchdown play by Pittsburgh Steeler running back Franco Harris when his team played the Oakland Raiders in an AFC Divisional playoff on Dec. 23, 1972, at the old Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh. With 22 seconds remaining and Oakland leading 7-6, Pittsburgh was at its own 40-yard line on 4th down and 10 yards to go. Quarterback Terry Bradshaw threw a pass to John "Frenchy" Fuqua, but Oakland safety Jack Tatum collided with Fuqua sending the ball wobbling backward. Pittsburgh rookie running back Franco Harris scooped up the ball, running untouched into the end zone, scoring the winning touchdown. Under the rules of that time, there could not be a legal catch if the ball touched two offensive players in succession. If the ball either bounced off both Tatum and Fuqua, or hit only Tatum, the catch would be legal. Swearingen consulted with umpire Pat Harder and field judge Adrian Burk, but then went to a sideline phone to consult with

Fred recalled life at sea in the Pacific during the War was chaotic at best. "When not flying, pilots would gather in the ship’s ready room and play cards. If there was an attack, we'd just keep right on playing, but when those 20 milimeter shipboard guns starting firing, we'd usually stop because that meant the enemy was getting damned close." May 11, 1945, during the battle for Okinawa was a fateful day for Fred. He recalled the Officer of the Day came in the ready room calling for some pilots to move 10 planes forward on the flight deck so that an incoming squadron could land.

"I tried to get out of the detail by hiding behind a big high-backed chair, but I got caught and the O.O.D. ordered me to go topside and move planes."

Fred said when he got up on the flight deck, a Japanese kamakazi plane came straight out of nowhere, slamming into the Bunker Hill. Everyone left in the ready room where Fred had been just 10 minutes before was killed in an exploding ball of fire. Another kamakazi hit about 20 seconds later. In all, 393 sailors were killed, with 254 wounded and the Bunker Hill was lost. Fred survived one of the Navy’s worst battle casualties.

We lost Fred on Dec. 16, 2016, but what a character we had while he was in our midst. When you hear sportscasters mention the “Immaculate Reception” as they often do during football season, think of Fred.

Give Us This Day Our Daily Chuckle This week, a compendium of wit, wisdom and neat stuff you can tell at parties. Enjoy! Golf Cart Accident

While driving home in my golf cart, I swerved to avoid hitting a deer, lost control and landed in a ditch, severely banging my head. Dazed and confused, I crawled out of the ditch to the edge of the road when a shiny new convertible pulled up with a very beautiful woman who asked, "Are you okay?

As I looked up, I noticed she was wearing a low-cut blouse with a cleavage to die for.

"I'm okay I think." I replied as I pulled myself up to the side of the car to get a closer look. She said, "Get in and I'll take you home, so I can clean and bandage that nasty scrape on your head.”

That’s nice of you," I answered, "But I don't think my wife will like me doing that!"

"Oh, come now, I'm a nurse," she insisted. "I need to see if you have any more scrapes and then treat them properly." Well, she was really pretty and very persuasive.

Being sort of shaken and weak, I agreed, but repeated, "I'm sure my wife won't like this.

We arrived at her place which was just a few miles away and, after a couple of cold beers and the bandaging I thanked her and said, "I feel a lot better, but I know my wife is going to be really upset so I'd better go now. "Don't be silly!" she said with a smile. "Stay for a while. She won't know anything. By the way, where is she?" "My guess is that she's still in the ditch." •••• Science is working on the wrong thing. I don't want to live to 150. I want to be 40 for 30 years. •••• Friendship among Women:

A woman didn't come home one night. The next morning she told her husband that she had slept over at a friend's house. The man called his wife's 10 best friends. None of them knew anything about it. Friendship among Men:

passion to those who are the tax collectors, adulterers, and sinners, while he bears down harshly on those who are the pious, judgmental, and self-righteous. The difference is the awareness of the sinner, while the religious groups don’t admit that they, too, are sinners in need of forgiveness.

Pastor Richard Huls (Retired) THE SEASON FOR FORGIVENESS

The Bible says, “There is a season for everything under heaven.” In the Paper issue of August 12, 2021, there was an article, “Fired for comments made as a child.” I commend Frederick Gomez for sharing it. It is especially appropriate in an age of judgment, self-righteousness, condemnation, hypocrisy, and faultfinding. This age seems to be the season for this behavior. When did all of this start? It is not new to our age. Much of Jesus’ ministry in the first century dealt with the selfrighteous fault-finding religious leaders. He confronts those who would condemn the woman caught in the act of adultery with, “He who is without sin, let him cast the first stone.” He shows mercy and com-

Why is there such a self-righteous movement today in politics, churches, and society? Perhaps it is because it is easier to see the faults of others and not our own. The way out of this dilemma is to admit our own (sins) and seek forgiveness. When that is done, and only when it is done, we can rise above the need to resurrect the faults of others from yesteryear and more recently, even today. Indeed, what value is it to parade the wrongs of others and deny our own? While not all who read the Paper are Bible believing followers, there is wisdom in the prayer of Jesus, “Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.” It is always in season. City of San Marcos announces COVID-19 Nonprofit Community Grant Program

Last month, the City of San Marcos announced a $3 million COVID-19 Nonprofit Community Grant Program, aimed at helping essential nonprofits serve San Marcos residents who have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic.

San Marcos nonprofits make positive impacts daily. It was especially noticeable during the pandemic, as they played a valuable role in supporting the community. Due to significant financial challenges faced by nonprofits, the San Marcos City Council committed a portion of federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to provide needed assistance through grants to nonprofits.

The council hopes to touch every corner of the city by supporting nonprofits working to better the lives of San Marcos residents. The City will host virtual webinars from 1-2 p.m. on Sept. 15, Oct. 19, and Nov. 18 to answer program questions. Applications are open; learn more at www.san-marcos.net/nonprofitgrants.

Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” McNamara Greetings Escondido,

After a long while because of COVID, I attended our restarted Community Advisory Group on Homelessness last night. We had a decent turnout of concerned residents. I was encouraged by their questions, their compassion, and genuine interest in trying to figure out what might work to solve this issue within the legal parameters we have to deal with.

I think our staff did a great job outlining what we are doing, and what we still can do. Sometimes we will hear the question, what is the city doing, and the answer is quite a lot. You can find a ton of information and answers to your questions on the city website- https://homelessness.escondido.org. If you haven’t looked through it and are concerned about the problem, it is really worth a good review. We plan to have another meeting in the next quarter with a focus on the challenges businesses are facing.

One final thought – when asked by someone how can I help, I always tell them to volunteer at one of the organizations who have professionals dealing with the homeless. They need volunteers and they are the ones trained to address the challenges associated with this issue. Stay informed, Be Kind, Remember your neighbor, and Stay safe!

Vista's Outdoor Lifestyle Centers Thriving

Many outdoor “lifestyle” shopping centers are gaining popularity, especially as many of us have grown accustomed to more outdoor time and fresh air. Two outdoor lifestyle centers, Vista Village and North County Square, plan to not only thrive, but are also repositioning post-pandemic and reimagining the live, work, play, and shop experience. North County Square is positioning itself as a lifestyle and destination center and continues to woo new retailers and eateries as part of its long term strategy of keeping the center vibrant; and Vista Village is taking a fresh look at how they are planning for anticipated growth. As Vista’s outdoor lifestyle shopping centers plan for the future, the City will continue working with them to improve and keep them relevant for the future.

puter repair or service. Best Buy sells all brands but their computer service organization, the “Geek Squad” has a YELP rating of 1.5 on a scale of 5. You probably don’t want them to get their hands on your PC.

Paul & Nome Van Middlesworth, The Computer Factory www. thecomputerfactory.net

Why we go to work in the morning

Last week the San Diego Union Tribune announced the results of their annual “Best of San Diego” reader’s poll. For the sixth straight year The Computer Factory was among the “Best” computer stores selected. In past years dozens of computer stores competed and there were as many as ten finalists. This year only four computer stores made to cut, The Computer Factory, Apple, Costco and Best Buy. The three other “Best Computer Stores” combined 500 billion in sales, 600 thousand employees and 30 San Diego County locations. Apple Stores work solely with Apple products, only 8% of the computer population. Costco sells all brands but doesn’t do any com-

The Computer Factory has annual sales of less than 1.0 million dollars, four employees and one “Worldwide” location but we are the only finalist that actually builds computers and we repair and upgrade all brands of Windows based computers. In addition to our own brand of custom built workstations we specialize in selling and customizing “enterprise refurbs.” “Enterprise Refurbs” are PCs (desktop, tower, All-in-One, notebook and micros) that become available as a result of budgeted replacement cycles, (typically three to five year cycles). New “enterprise” computers cost two to three times as much as “retail” models but there is a huge difference. The enterprise PCs are expensive because the high reliability components are designed to support continuous service in business environments. “Retail” models are designed to price compete among consumers who know little about quality reliability and performance. These are PRICE shoppers and it makes sense to price compete by providing the cheapest computer that can survive the single year warranty period. That’s your “retail” Dell and HP PC.

Store.” We’ve been on the same corner in San Marcos for 26 years selling and fixing PCs. Nome and I were raised in small town Eastern Indiana where lifelong friendships and relationships were the rule rather than the exception. Between 1970-1990 my corporate career moved us from Indiana to Florida to Minnesota to Canada and then to California. During those hectic years we missed the sense of community we grew up with and we worried about the effect it might have on our growing family. We settled in San Marcos 1990, opened The Computer Factory in 1995 and started getting to know San Marcos and our surrounding communities. Through our years of membership in Carlsbad, Vista, San Marcos and Escondido Chambers of Commerce we’ve hobnobbed with hundreds of

our fellow small business men and women. Through local organizations like our Church, Lion’s, Historical Society, San Marcos Foundation, Business Builders Network etc we’ve become acquainted with our civic leaders and others who volunteer and work in the community. Over the years, here in San Marcos, we have completely regained that lost sense of community that we grew up with in Indiana. The Computer Factory is an important part of our lives today. We are well past retirement age but we get up, get dressed and go to work every day but Sunday. Each day we do things that help our neighbors adapt to technologies that make their lives better. How does it get any better than that?

There is another difference between us and our fellow “Best Computer

dawns on Mom that she will no longer touch her daughter’s hair like this each morning. She’s been touching her daughter’s hair for eighteen years. No more. Mom starts to get teary, but she chokes them back. A deal is a deal.

There comes a point when a parent has done their best. They’ve taught their kid everything they know. They’ve taught them to not lie, cheat or steal or chew with their mouth open. They’ve reminded them to change the dorm sheets every Friday because clean sheets are next to Godliness. They’ve taught them that a bar of soap costs less than the price of embarrassment. Now it’s go time.

Mom notices the freshmen and sophomores wandering around campus wearing looks of giddiness. Then she thinks about the pandemic, and this gives Mom a pang of fear because the world is different than it used to be.

Very different. When Mom was a kid, there were no deadly viruses, no worldwide epidemics, no fear of public places, no fist-bumps. There were no such things as hand sanitizer, no delta variants. “Delta” was the name of a castmember from “Designing Women,” and “Corona” was sipped at the beach. The worst thing most mothers had to

fear back then was MTV. It was a different era. Little kids still walked to baseball practice alone. Children rode bikes without helmets and sat in the front passenger seats of cars and ate obscene amounts of refined sugar. Mom’s parents never had to deal with this level of fear. Mom’s parents just put their kids on a bus with some milk money and said “See ya.” But the world isn’t like that anymore. And Mom’s realizing this. “Text me whenever you have time,” says Mom, biting her lower lip. “Okay.”

“You can’t text me too much, Lindsey.” “Okay.”

the Playskool toys that once littered the living room. She’s thinking about French braids, Captain Crunch, soccer tournaments, and prom.

She is about to crawl into her front seat when she sees a reflection in her window. The reflection of a young woman. She turns to see her daughter standing behind her. “Mom,” says the emotional girl. “I’m gonna miss you so much.” And all deals were off.

“Okay.”

“You’d better hurry for orientation.” “Bye, Mom.”

And the girl leaves.

The child wanders into the dormitory while Mom waves goodbye, her heart is shattering into talcum powder. Her daughter disappears through the front doors, and that’s it. The end. It’s over now.

You give a kid the best eighteen years of your life—the prime of your youth—and the kid just walks away. They don’t look back. They don’t even worry about you. They just leave. Mom turns to make the long walk back to her car. She’s reminding herself to breathe. She’s reminding herself not to be anxious.

When she reaches her car she just stands there for a while, thinking about the child’s first steps in the backyard. She’s thinking about all

NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER ESTATE OF Joseph Jay Damyen, aka Joseph J. Damyen and Joseph Damyen Case No. 37-2021-00033595 PRLA-CTL SUPERIOR COURT OF CALIFORNIA, COUNTY OF SAN DIEGO 1100 Union Street San Diego, CA. 92101 Central District Probate 3rd Floor To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate or both, of Joseph Jay Damyen aka Joseph J. Damyen and Joseph Damyen. A petition for probate has been filed by James W. Billingsley in the Superior Court of California, County of San Diego, 1100 Union St., San Diego, Ca., 92101, Central Courthouse - Probate Division. The Petition for Probate requests that James W. Billingsley be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. The petition requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act.
