SECOND LOOK AT CALIFORNIA’S UNBELIEVABLE HIDDEN SECRETS!
By Friedrich Gomez
Outside of these United States – from the outside looking in – what does the rest of the world see, and think, of America and Americans? And why is the entire world so curious about us?
About our various customs, traditions, spiritual values, even the way we live and play – right down to our Hollywood movies and our very own jazz and rock ‘n’ roll music inventions. The Paper - 760.747.7119

But which U. S. state – above all others -- mostly fascinates the foreign mind?
Which American state do world tourists mostly fantasize about today and – in proven statistics – actually visit the most? If you’re California Dreamin’ – you’re on the right track!
MORE FOREIGN TOURISTS VISIT CALIFORNIA THAN ANY OTHER U. S. STATE – BY FAR!
There was a time when New York State was No. 1.
When America received more than 20 million immigrants between 1880 and 1920. The world had seldom witnessed such a mass movement of humanity: All Americans (except for Native Americans) can trace their ancestry to immigrants from other nations around the world. Yes, indeed, there was a time when New York State was the Mecca of

the West; when its clarion call of freedom was made manifest by its iconic Statue of Liberty; making Ellis Island the busiest port of entry and immigrant inspection station in the United States – all of which made the Empire State the No. 1 destination in the New World. No more.
Through the decades, New York has slowly slipped from its No. 1 pedestal.
Today, the Empire State has plum-

The overwhelming majority of human inhabitants on planet Earth have greatly shifted the tourist paradigm in a completely different calculus, due to various variables, wherein U. S. tourism statistics are mind-boggling in favor of our Golden State!
OVER $140-BILLION ANNUAL TOURIST DOLLARS POUR INTO CALIFORNIA. For several years now, even prior to 2015 – the exotic, eccentric, and colorful cultures within California have long made our Golden State the No. 1 choice among world travelers.
According to the official U. S. Travel Association Report, California raked in over $140-billion in 2018, prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.
California is not only the top choice for foreign globetrotters but, also, the most popular destination point for fellow Americans as well!

A. McDonald’s restaurants. B. California-style clothing & beachwear. C. California burritos, skateboards, and popsicles.
Who would ever have guessed that one of our unique California cultures and eating lifestyles, originating within our state, would have its biggest impact in Communist Russia? Incredible, but true!
Correct answer is “A” for McDonald’s fast-food restaurants!
California’s influential eating habits and even menu food items have overturned the conventional Russian diet, when McDonald’s greatly altered Russia’s everyday eating habits.
Yes, McDonald’s, once said to be a ‘Western decadence’ by the Eastern Bloc nation, has now embedded itself within Russian soil and the California creation there has broken all worldwide franchise records! No other McDonald’s fast food restaurant (including here in America) is busier than the McDonald’s located at Pushkin Square in Moscow – which has the distinction of being “The Busiest McDonald’s Fast Food Outlet in the Entire World!”

I was talking to a girl in the bar last night.
She said, "If you lost a few pounds, had a shave and got your hair cut, you'd look all right."
I said, "If I did that, I'd be talking to your friends over there instead of you." •••• I went to the pub last night and saw a fat chick dancing on a table. I said, "Nice legs."

It was the fourth game of the World Series, Braves against the Yanks. I was fifteen, chubby, and redheaded. I was out for my nightly walk, sweating, and breathing heavily beneath the rigors of exercise. Chubby boys and exercise mix about as well as milk and Mountain Dew.
It was late October. People on nearby porches watched me pass by—like they did every evening—waving hello to the chunky kid doing cardio. “Hey, Critter,” said Jermaine, who was sitting on the porch with his father, watching the game on a portable television.
Jermaine was my age. His old man played piano at their church. His family called me “Critter” sometimes. I don’t know why.
The girl giggled and said with a smile, "Do you really think so."
I said "Definitely! Most tables would have collapsed by now. " •••• I was telling a girl in the pub about my ability to guess what day a woman was born just by feeling their boobs. "Really" she said, "Go on then...try."
After about 30 seconds of fondling she began to lose patience and said. "Come on, what day was I born"? I said, Yesterday."
•••• “I’ve got some bad news.”
“Good thing I’m sitting down.”
“I just painted that chair.” •••• When my wife and I have a tough decision we: Talk it through as equals. Weigh all the options. Come to a joint decision And then she does whatever she wants. •••• These dadgummed pups of mine! I'm on a protein diet and was enjoying some broiled chicken for breakfast. And there they were.

I waved back. “Hey, Jermaine.”
“You wanna watch the game with us, Critter?” his father asked.
I removed the Sony transistor radio from the pocket of my Husky jeans and waved it. “No thanks, I’m listening to it now.” He smiled.
And I kept walking.
I passed the porch of Mrs. Renteria, the old woman who prepared hundreds of tamales in her kitchen and carried them to local construction job sites in Igloo coolers, selling them for a dollar a pop. She was raising two granddaughters and a grandson with those tamales. I once ate nineteen in one sitting.

me. With those eyes that plead for mercy. For a brief kindness. For just some small consideration.
They don't whine and prance around. They just look at me.
With those eyes. Those "I'm an orphan and haven't had anything to eat for days, and I'm hungry," eyes.
And they know damned good and well that they've got me wrapped around their little paws. I think they got half of my chicken.
They know I cannot resist them. And those eyes.
And here I am, wasting away to a shadow of my former self.
And all because of those eyes. •••• I’m tired of people complaing about $7 beers, $10 parking, $20 cover charge. Don’t like the prices? Stop coming over to my house! •••• "They say such nice things about people at their funerals that it makes me sad that I'm going to miss mine by just a few days." •••• I love how people in horror movies open the door and yell “hello?” As if the killer answers, “I’m in the kitchen, want a sandwich?”

And while it’s true that some menu items in Russia are changed to suit the regional diet (as with other McDonald’s country locations), it’s equally true that the Russians can still (and do) order basic American staple items, such as: The Western Gourmet Burger (complete with spicy jalapenos and onions), The Grill Gourmet Burger (complete with two slices of cheese, sweet peppers and garlic-lemon sauce and herbs) which, according to translated Russian on the menu: “Gives it a unique, upscale flavor for a most eloquent McDonald’s burger (listed at 278 rubles).” On the Russian McDonald’s menu are other American staples, such as the ever-popular Chicken Wings, Country Style Potatoes, the conventional American French fries, and the mega-popular ice cream spinoff: the McFlurries! How can anyone say “Nyet” to all that Western decadence?
And yes, other American food and beverage conglomerates are in Russia also, such as Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Burger King, KFC, Subway, Taco Bell, etc. – but none of these American fast food items/outlets within Russia are the world’s No. 1 – that distinction belongs only to McDonald’s. CALIFORNIA

McDonald’s was founded 81 years ago, on May 15, 1940, in San Bernardino, California, and was first operated by Richard and Maurice McDonald. In 1955, businessman Ray Kroc joined the company and proceeded to purchase the chain from the McDonald brothers and the rest, as they say, is – in this case -- historic! After retiring from McDonald’s, Ray Kroc owned the San Diego Padres major league baseball team.
Although born in Oak Park, Illinois, McDonald’s owner, Ray Kroc, loved San Diego above all other American cities.
Kroc died in San Diego on January 14, 1984, at the age of 81 and his final resting place – per his wishes - is at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego, California. Sadly, he never lived to see his California legacy accomplishing the seemingly impossible.

This brought a grin to the Mexican woman’s antique face. I passed Mister Alverado’s house. He was in a wheelchair from an accident at a factory. He was listening to the game on a boombox. Mister Alverado raised his Coors as I passed by. “Them Yank pitchers are killing us,” he shouted. “We need to get this offense going.” We briefly discussed our mutual hatred for the Bronx Bombers. These types of operations are part of a program utilized by Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) and local law enforcement agencies used to detect and deter shoulder tap activity. TIPS (8477) or via our Web site at police.escondido.org. Recall Effort of Oceanside Councilwoman Unsuccessful
A citizen-led attempt to oust the city’s newest council member has failed after coming 52 signatures short of the required amount.
Back in May, a notice of intent to petition was filed in an effort to recall Councilmember Kori Jensen from her recently appointed seat on the Oceanside City Council. Earlier this year, Jensen was appointed to represent District 1 by a majority council vote. The petition needed to collect 4,484 signatures from voters in District 1, a figure that is based on the number of registered voters in the district.
Of those 5,959 signatures, only 4,432 were valid — just 52 signatures shy of the amount to force a recall election. If the petition effort had obtained its required amount of signatures, the City Council would have had 14 days to call an election. Jensen said she is happy to put the recall petition behind her so she can focus on her district’s needs. “We have a lot of important issues going on now and my focus needs to be on my community,” Jensen said. I offer a salute to John Moetam and all the outstanding staff at Dominic’s and I strongly urge you to support them. The menu is outstanding, service is great and the prices are more than reasonable. Letters to the Editor Hope For America!
Attn. Mr. Lyle E Davis, owner of the weekly magazine The Paper.
I worry about America. We used to have a healthy fear & respect towards our teachers & parents. Today, there are shootings in grammar schools. Kids with iPods sing rap music using F-words and killing police. Today's generation thinks it's "totally uncool" to respect our flag, country, or even show public affection towards their parents or grandparents. Peer pressure and bullying drives them to suicide. Last Friday, my husband, two teenaged girls and myself, saw a

We, like most of you, have gotten cabin fever. We want to get out, to do something, to use our hands, our minds and bodies to do something other than sit and look at tv all day. The pandemic has kinda made us prisoners within our own homes. Now that it is beginning to open up a bit . . we are getting busy, getting back to what might be considered “normal.”
In our case, we’ve remodeled our home(s) (mine and Evelyn Madison’s). We’ve had the interior painted, was so pleased with the painter’s work that we opted to have the exterior done as well. Evelyn used the same painter, Dennis Levine of Southland Improvements (760.715.6380). He also arranged for exterior painting and improvemens and we are both well pleased.
Meanwhile, we’ve recarpeted one bedroom and have plans to recarpet my office and master bedroom.
I may even have to re-roof the house. All this adds up to a lot of money but it’s money invested in something that will last for a lifetime or more. Adding up all the bills (ouch!) I can see where it would be fairly easy to spend as much on remodeling as what we originally paid for the house. (Ouch again!)

appeared considerably broken in health. He informed me that Mrs. Lincoln was his own aunt, and that he had been brought up in the family of Abraham Lincoln.” (“Fremont in the Conquest of California,” historical book, by John Bidwell.)
Also, in a handwritten letter to the Los Angeles Express, Todd had explained his new California flag design, as such: “The flag’s star imitated the Lone Star flag of Texas. The grizzly bear represented two things in California: (1) the many bears in the state and (2) the bear was a symbol of strength and unyielding resistance.”
The California State flag went through various design changes before it was officially adopted by the California State Legislature and signed into law by Governor Hiram Johnson on February 3, 1911. However, even after 1953, flag design variations occurred, including the bear image.
Many people today are still greatly surprised to find that our California State flag was actually designed by one of Abraham Lincoln’s closest family members! How has this truly colorful fact managed to remain hugely unknown for so long?

glimmer of hope & love that restored our faith. At McDonald's in Escondido we spotted your writer Fredrick Gomez with an elderly woman, possibly his mother or grandmother. It brought tears to our eyes as if God planned this for us to witness & renew our hope. Both Fredrick & the elderly woman were like two children together, rather than two different generations. They laughed, shared stories & even sang together. And we all choked up with emotion at seeing the joy & close bond. No shame. No fear of being "uncool" or "bullied" or "made fun of" by a nearby table of young boys & girls. On the drive home, my two girls (aged 14 and 17) both said: "Wow! I really love Fredrick! I think he's so cool with his long hair!" My husband & I just smiled at each other. Yes, Mr. Lyle E. Davis, there IS hope in our world. And we saw it, of all places, in McDonald's. California’s fascinating and hidden history is truly amazing and continues to fascinate! WHICH BIZARRE CALIFORNIA STATEMENT BELOW IS TRUE?
A. Some California mountains have naturally pink snow. B. Some snowy California mountains have polar bears. C. Some northern California mountains in Eureka are actually owned by the Canadian government.
All statements above seem impossible, but, the correct one is “A,” some California mountains have naturally pink snow! Baffled onlookers refer to this phenomenon in nature in a variety of casual non-scientific terms, such as “watermelon snow” or “pink snow” or even “blood snow” to offer up just a few examples.
However, biologists explain that this natural pink snow is actually caused by a species of naturallyoccurring algae, scientifically known as “chlamydomonas nivalis.” Simply speaking, this type of algae releases a red pigment in cold and freezing conditions.
This type of snow phenomenon is common during the summer in alpine and coastal polar regions worldwide, such as in California’s Davis, my ex-wife.
As regular readers know, Mary has dementia. She is a high funtioning patient but it’s still dementia. I have been her primary caregiver for five years. Though still divorced we’ve always been very close friends so it was relatively easy to move back home to care for her.
What regular readers do not know is that Friedrich comes by to visit with Mary and takes her for car rides and buys her Cokes and hamburgers . . and they sing and Mary recites Scottish poems to him. It’s a bit of magic when Friedrich is with Mary. He is able to bring out the best and brightest version of Mary. He makes her come alive and she recalls and relates memories of Scotland, and of the early years when our two sons were young. (I’m about ready to adopt Friedrich). Do you enjoy reading The Paper? Sierra Nevada Mountains.
There, in California’s famous Sierra Nevada mountain -- at altitudes of 10,000 to 12,000 feet -- the temperature is cold throughout the year, so the snow has lingered longer from winter storms. Thus, stepping on the snow or compressing it, such as when making snowballs, leaves it looking pink or red! Walking or playing on ‘watermelon snow’ often results in getting mittens, boots, shoes, and clothing pink and/or red in color.
With this particular scientific phenomenon, California’s real-life ‘watermelon snow’ is, well, -- even stranger than science fiction! WHAT IS CALIFORNIA’S OFFICIAL “STATE PET”?
A. Raccoons. B. Shelter pets waiting for adoption. C. Otters.
This little known California fact may truly shock you, but it should also give you great pleasure to know. Correct answer is “B” for Shelter Pets.
In early September of 2015 in Sacramento, the California State Legislature passed Resolution ACR 56, declaring “The Shelter Pet” as the Official California State Pet.

California has long been a frontrunner in championing the long fight for animal rights, especially for abandoned dogs and cats; some rescued by various Humane Societies, and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), etc. Many of these animals are now waiting to be adopted-out to caring, loving homes, so as to not be euthanized (put to death). Every year, over 800,000 animals are taken in by California’s public and private shelters, with fewer than half adopted into new homes.
SPCA, municipal animal shelters, and humane societies, often nurse severely sick animals back to health and are able to match them with permanent homes. Sadly, many are not adopted and, therefore, are euthanized.

“In a state that ends over half a million pets’ lives in our animal shelters each year, it seems critical to raise awareness, and to support programs and legislation that ends this suffering of healthy, adoptable pets.
“Making the ‘Shelter Pet’ the official California State Pet is a great step in sending the message and making it official to always adopt your next companion animal.” (Judie Manusco, President, Social Compassion in Legislation.)
Life-saving measures such as ‘public awareness’ are spreading, as California joins other U. S. States which have also made the Shelter Pet a State Pet, such as Ohio, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, and Tennessee. The Paper hopes to assist in raising awareness on behalf of these innocent, un-adopted animals, with the inclusion of this particular California trivia storyline.
AMERICA’S MOST RACIALLY & ETHNICALLY DIVERSE PEOPLE RESIDE IN WHAT CALIFORNIA CITY? First off, the very question seems impossible because New York City is known as the Gateway to America and its five boroughs are home to various cultural communities such as Far Eastern Indians, Germans, Irish, Italians, Puerto Rican, Chinese, Korean, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Caribbean, Jewish, et al. And yet, several California cities – by far – each have a greater range and spectrum of different racial and ethnic people than either New York City or Miami, or Chicago! Remember, we’re not asking which city has the greatest (population) of each ethnic group, but rather the (greatest diversity, range and spectrum of different racial/ethnic groups) gathered together in one U. S. city. So, take your best guess below. A. San Francisco. B. Stockton. C. Fresno.
Believe it or not, even though Fresno has (well over) 100 different ethnicities and racial groups that reside there, Fresno is STILL not the correct answer! Correct answer is “B” for Stockton, California! On January 28, 2020, U. S. News & World Report named Stockton, California “The most diverse racially and ethnically big city in the United States.”
And ABC 10 News reported: “Stockton is more diverse than New York and Los Angeles.” This is no surprise to those who are
Page 6

proud to call Stockton home.
This is in concurrence with the official U. S. Census, as well as replicated 2020 surveys by various National Demographic Studies, that Stockton, indeed, has the most diverse ethnic/racial/cultural group in all America!
Oakland placed second, and Sacramento placed third, respectively, beating out even the greater Los Angeles area. To determine the most racially diverse cities in America, the various research reports calculated a diversity score for each of the 66 U.S. cities with populations of 300,000 or more, based on recent census data.
Overall, among the top 10 most racially and ethnically diverse large cities in America for 2020, the eighth, ninth, and tenth positions are held by Los Angeles, California, Fresno, California, and Chicago, Illinois, respectively. WHAT IS CALIFORNIA’S OFFICIAL FOLK DANCE? A. The West Coast Swing. B. Ballet Folklorico. C. Square Dance.
Correct answer is “C” for square dance, which is most apropos for a U. S. State truly in the Westernmost part of the United States.
Although the “West Coast Swing” is California’s official ‘State Dance,’ it is not the ‘State Folk Dance.’
That honor belongs to the Square Dance, a historically accurate depiction of the new frontier state. Over 20 U. S. States list the square dance as their official folk dance.
THE FERRIS WHEEL AT SANTA MONICA PIER, CALIFORNIA, IS WORLD-FAMOUS FOR WHAT REASON? A. It is the world’s only solar-powered Ferris Wheel. B. It is the world’s tallest & fastest Ferris Wheel. C. It is the world’s first Ferris Wheel.
Correct answer is “A.” Known as the “Pacific Wheel” at the amusement park at the Santa Monica Pier in California, it is the first-and-only solar powered one in the entire world, featuring over 174,000 energy-efficient LED lights that, “display dynamic eye-popping computer-generated lighting entertainment in the evenings and, during the day, provides spectacular views of Santa Monica Bay and the Pacific Ocean.” The famous and mega-popular amusement park offers a variety of rides, and the solar-powered Ferris Wheel has been featured in over 500 movies and television shows,

Time to Fall Back, Again
On November 7th, the annual ritual of “falling back’ will be upon us gain, despite 60% voter approval for Proposition 7 in 2018 that was aimed at eliminating the bi-annual time change. So what’s going on and why are we still doing this? Daylight saving time was first imposed as a temporary energy saving measure during World War I, and was re-instated during World War II. After World War II ended, states were allowed to decide the issue, and in 1949, voters approved Proposition 12, permanently establishing daylight saving time during spring and summer in our state.
Measures approved by the voters can only be changed by the voters, and under terms of Proposition 7, California voters asked the Legislature to introduce a bill changing the times and dates of daylight saving time, in compliance with federal laws, and should federal law be changed, to allow yearround daylight saving time. As a result, Assembly Bill 7 was introduced in 2019 by Assemblyman Kansan Chu (D – San Jose), to authorize permanent year-round daylight saving time. AB 7 required a two-thirds vote and passed the Assembly without oppo-
sition, but the Legislature adjourned for the year before the Senate could take action. The following year, session was cut short due to the pandemic, and new legislation was introduced but never came up for a vote. Similar legislation is likely to be introduced when we re-convene in January, but there is one more hurdle. Federal law allows states to adopt year-round standard time (as in Arizona), but the law does not permit year-round daylight saving time.
In March the “Sunshine Protection Act of 2021” was introduced by a bi-partisan group of Senators in Washington D.C. If it passes, 2021 could be the last year we have to ‘spring forward and fall back.’ Only time will tell. Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

PROBLEM SOLVED BY CHRISTOPHER ELLIOTT
Q: I have a problem with Green Ape CBD. I returned a package of CBD gummies unopened and inside the packaging material they sent it to me in. They have a sneaky policy of recurring deliveries and I returned them because I can’t eat sugar now. When I returned the item, a representative said they would issue a refund for the $75 but I would have to cover the shipping. I’ve sent about 20 emails to them asking for my refund and it goes nowhere. I spoke to someone yesterday who said, “Oh yes, we received your order and will process a refund. It will take five to six weeks to get a check and now there will be a $5 restocking fee.
A Green Ape representative said it was unable to process a return to my credit card and it needed to send a check. I asked them to send me an email to confirm they would send me a refund and they said their email department would send me an email today as they didn’t work yesterday. It all sounds shady. Why wouldn’t they refund it to begin with? Why is it taking two months to get my money back and now five to six weeks more? I said I would dispute my credit card charges, but they said they would just say “they are resolving it” and point them to their policy, so that would be “pointless.” I just want an email with a confirmation so I know they are going to do what they should have done. Can you help me get a refund from Green Ape? -- Chrissie Klinkowski, Boulder Creek, Calif. A: Green Ape shouldn't have monkeyed around with your refund. If it promised to return your money, it should have done so quickly. I reviewed the paper trail between you and the company. By the way, nice job keeping track of your communication with Green Ape. Most people just call instead of sending email, which means they don't have any record of their interaction with the company. It looks like you received several form responses to your repeated requests for a refund. That's frustrating. Restocking fees are common, but they are not consumer-friendly. Putting an item back in a warehouse is a basic cost of doing business. You shouldn't have to pay for that.
The online reviews of Green Ape are inconclusive. I found your complaint on a popular consumer site, along with another consumer who was upset that the company continued to send him gummies even though he asked to stop his subscription. I think you have to be careful about agreeing to a subscription of any kind when you're buying products by mail. I once ordered medication online, and they offered a generous discount if I agreed to let them replenish my supply. They sent me way too much of the product and kept charging me

TRAVEL TROUBLESHOOTER
BY CHRISTOPHER ELLIOTT
Q: In the summer of 2019, I booked seven roundtrip tickets from Miami to Budapest on TAP Air Portugal through Expedia. I planned to fly to Europe the following spring with my husband, my two daughters, my mother and my two cousins.
In March of 2020, a week or so before our scheduled departure, TAP Air Portugal canceled our flight because of COVID-19. I waited a few months before doing anything, since I got an automated email about flight credit. And who knew when the world would open up again? Eventually, time passed, life circumstances changed, and I knew that the seven of us would not be able to take that trip to Budapest anytime in the near future. So I began the process of trying to get a refund. It's been a year since I asked for a refund, and there's still no refund from either Expedia or TAP Air Portugal. When I try to check my refund process, it either doesn’t have anything in the system or still shows a credit.
I am exhausted from having to go back and forth between the two. Anything you can do to help me would be so much appreciated. -Sandra Einhorn, Hollywood, Fla.
A: TAP Air Portugal should have refunded your flights promptly since it canceled them. But like several airlines during the pandemic, it didn't. Instead, it offered a ticket credit, which EU regulators eventually said was not allowed. Under existing EU rules, an airline must either offer a full refund or a credit for a canceled flight, no matter the reason for the cancellation. The correspondence between you, TAP Air Portugal and Expedia is pretty confusing. It looks like Expedia believed TAP had resolved your case because you had asked TAP Air Portugal directly for a refund, so it closed your case. And, as is so often the case, no one was willing to take responsibility for your missing refund.
You might have asked for your money back a little sooner. It looks as if you waited several months to start the process. The longer you wait, the harder it becomes to get your money back. That's just a general rule when it comes to my consumer advocacy. Waiting only benefits the company that already has your money.
You could have also reached out to executives at both companies. I list the names, numbers and email addresses of the <a href="https://www.elliott.org/company-contacts/expedia-customerservice-contacts/">customer service managers at Expedia</a> on

Will the ‘Real’ Tokyo Rose Please Stand Up
The moniker Tokyo Rose was a name given by Allied troops in the South Pacific during World War II to all female English-speaking radio broadcasters of Japanese propaganda. The programs were broadcast to the South Pacific designed to demoralize Allied forces and their families back home, emphasizing war time difficulties and military losses.
Tokyo Rose
Several female broadcasters operated using different aliases and in different cities throughout the Japanese Empire, including Tokyo, Manila, and Shanghai. The name "Tokyo Rose" was never used by the Japanese. It was a moniker dubbed by American troops. During the war, Tokyo Rose was not any one individual, but rather a group of largely unassociated women working for the same propagandist effort throughout the Japanese Empire. In the years immediately after the war, "Tokyo Rose,” whom the F.B.I. determined to be “mythical,” became an important symbol of Japanese war-time villainy. It was American-born Iva Toguri D’Aquino, born July 4, 1916, who ultimately was identified as “the” Tokyo Rose.
An American citizen and the daughter of Japanese-American immigrants, Aquino had traveled to Japan to tend to a sick aunt just prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Unable to leave Japan when war began, as an American citizen, she also was unable to receive any aid from her parents who had been placed in an Arizona internment camp, Aquino took a job as a parttime typist at Radio Tokyo. Japanese authorities quickly recognized her distinctive American dialect and recruited her as a broadcaster for a propaganda program aimed at U.S. troops called The Zero Hour. It consisted of skits, mostly fake news reports, and popular American music. Between 1945 and 1960 U.S. movies and propaganda videos
have tended to portray Aquino as a sexualized, manipulative, and deadly voice broadcasting to Allied forces fighting in the South Pacific. The programs in particular revealed supposed American losses. Similar German propaganda broadcasts of British-born Lord Haw-Haw and American-born Axis Sally were beamed to Allied troops in Europe and North Africa. In 1949 the San Francisco Chronicle described Tokyo Rose as the "Mata Hari of radio." Tokyo Rose ceased to be merely a symbol during September 1945 when D’Aquino attempted to return to the United States. She was accused of being the "real" Tokyo Rose, arrested, tried, and became the seventh person in U.S. history to be convicted of treason. Toguri was eventually paroled from prison in 1956, but it was more than 20 years later she received an official presidential pardon for her role in the war.
After World War II ended in 1945, the U.S. military detained Toguri for a year before releasing her due to lack of evidence. Department of Justice officials agreed that her broadcasts were "innocuous.” But when Toguri tried to return to the United States, an uproar ensued because Walter Winchell (a powerful broadcasting personality at that time) as well as the American Legion lobbied relentlessly for a trial, prompting the FBI to renew its investigation of Toguri's wartime activities.
Like Mildred “Axis Sally” Gillars, who did propaganda broadcasts for Germany before her, D’Aquino’s 1949 trial resulted in a conviction on one of eight counts of treason. She served six years in prison before being released.
According to a 1968 journalism investigation, some 94 former G.I.s who were interviewed recalled listening to The Zero Hour while serving in the Pacific. About 89 percent recognized the program as "propaganda", and less than 10 percent felt "demoralized,” yet 84 percent of the men listened because “Tokyo Rose” was "good entertainment," and one G.I. remarked, "… lots of us thought she was on our side." In 1974, another investigation discovered D’Aquino’s trial witnesses who said they were forced to lie during the trial. They said FBI and U.S. occupation police had coached them what they should say on the witness stand. The witnesses were reportedly threatened with treason trials of their own if they did not cooperate. In 1977, as a result of the investigation, U.S. President Gerald Ford pardoned D’Aquino based on these revelations and earlier issues with her indictment. During and after the War, journalist and radio personality Walter Kaner broadcast to Armed Forces troops using the name Tokyo Mose. Kaner mocked the Japanese war-time

Braves Contiued from Page 3
I went straight home after that doctor visit, looked at my bare torso in the mirror, and I cried in shame because I hated my reflection.
Then I ate three oatmeal creme pies to dull the pain. After that I started walking. I began leaving the house on foot, under the cover of blackness, so nobody would see my hideous body. I tucked my father’s old mini radio into the pocket of my Sears, Roebuck & Co. jeans, and listened to Braves games as though it were my religion. One foot in front of the other. Right, left, right. Inhale, exhale, repeat.
I walked until my feet developed blisters. I walked until there were red stains on my Chuck Taylors. I walked until I started to lose weight. Bobby Cox and America’s Team were my cardiovascular companions.
That summer, I became a nightly fixture in that little neighborhood. All the neighbors knew me, since I passed their houses each evening. Over time, I worked my way up to walking four or five miles each night. That night, however, as the World Series droned through my little speaker, I was walking faster than normal. I was a nervous wreck. The Braves had locked horns with New York in Game Four, and we were losing our butts. It was a bloodbath.
The sad part was that the neighborhood was decked out in Braves paraphernalia. There were tomahawk flags flying from working-class porches. There were handmade posters in front yards which read: “Honk if you love the Atlanta Braves!” There was a gal down the street who painted a big red sign that read: “Marry Me, David Justice,” even though Justice played for Cleveland that year.
By the final inning of the Series, I ended my walk at Jermaine’s porch, exhausted and sweaty. I watched the final strikeouts with Jermaine and his old man. “It ain’t looking good for us, Critter,” said Jermaine’s daddy. It was bad.
The Braves ended up losing, four to one. And after the game ended, I couldn’t help myself, I started crying a little.
You see, sometimes a boy can want something so badly in this life that it breaks his little heart when he doesn’t get it. This is, of course, the primary lesson of being human. Learning how to lose. Learning about failure.
But when you’re fifteen, everything feels raw. And when you’re fifteen and grieving your father, all emotions are ten times more potent.
I wanted Atlanta to win more than
anything. I wanted them to win it for me, and for the ghost of my old man. I wanted the Braves to sweep the Series because I wanted to be excited about something again. I wanted to smile.
After the loss, Jermaine’s daddy flipped off the small TV. The world went dark. He looked at two disappointed boys, dressed in Atlanta Braves finery, and he said: “Aw, cheer up, guys. Maybe next year we’ll get a second chance.”
Well, that was twenty-two years ago. But as of last week, the Atlanta Braves beat the LA Dodgers to become contenders in the next World Series. And this is that second chance, Critter. Sean Dietrich is a proflic writer and frequent contributor to The Paper.

broadcasts and later he entertained U.S. troops occupying Japan. Kaner did a parody of the Japanese language (Hello, Hello, How are you) singing "Moshi, Moshi Ano-ne,” a jingle he sung to the tune of "London Bridge is Falling Down." The jingle became so popular with Japanese children as well as U.S. troops the Stars & Stripes newspaper called it "the Japanese occupation theme song." In 1946, New York socialite and entertainment celebrity hostess Elsa Maxwell referred to Kaner as "… a breath of home to unknown thousands of our young men when they were lonely.” Iva Toguri D’Aquino died of natural causes in Chicago on Sept. 27, 2006, at the age of 90.

Museum honors town's local heroes With the approach of Veterans Day on November 11, the Valley Center History Museum is spotlighting its permanent exhibition on local veterans and pointing out that new items have been added over the past year.
Museum president William Boyett said the exhibition, titled "Honoring Our Local Heroes," is popular yearround, but that an increasing number of people visit in the days before the actual day of remembrance. Of special interest is a little-known story of a Valley Center resident who volunteered to fight with the Confederate Army from 1861-1865. He survived and later became involved in local real estate sales, including the purchase of a 160acre parcel now part of Hideaway Lake. Alonso Smith Westmoreland, whose photo in Confederate uniform is displayed prominently at the museum, married after the war and raised 11 children. He died in 1917.
Military memorabilia on exhibit includes historic documents, medals, uniforms, dog tags, citations, and an original Civil War discharge certificate issued in 1865 at Appomattox. Along with Westmoreland, there are 13 local residents who served during the Civil War. Sofia Vergera with Owl - 3rd place

“LIVIN LARGE” IN NORTH COUNTY
Just as Covid restrictions are easing and things are starting to open back up, we’re hit with empty supermarket shelves and eye-watering inflation at gas stations, restaurants, theme parks and everywhere. It’s downright depressing. But working together maybe we can find ways to continue “Livin Large” without breaking the bank. If you, the readers of “The Paper,” know about a hidden gem here in North County, send us an email and we’ll check it out. If we feature your “gem” you’ll be a member of the “Livin Large Posse” with the T-shirt and everything. This week’s “Livin Large” features sunset at Double Peak Park followed by Happy Hour in beautiful downtown San Elijo Hills. We go back on Pacific Standard Time Sunday morning so sunset will be 4:52 this Sunday and 4:42 by month end. Bring along a pair of binoculars and get there a few minutes early. Sunsets at Double Peaks are special and you definitely won’t be alone. After you enjoy the sunset and a few minutes of afterglow you’ll have just enough time to cruise on into downtown San Elijo Hills for the 4 to 6PM Happy Hour at the Vine and Tap Wine Bar, www.sevineandtap.com , located at one of the four intersections of San Elijo and Elfin Forest Rds.
San Elijo Hills is a special place to Nome and me. It’s younger and more energetic than the “flatland” neighboring communities in San Marcos, Vista and Escondido and it has a definite small town look and feel to it. “The Hills” hint at that sense of community we knew so well growing up in small town America. The clock tower, the shops and restaurants around the town center park, It’s a throwback to a happier time and an oasis in busy, urban, coastal California.
The Vine and Tap fits the busy and friendly character of the community. Matt the bartender and Kelsi our server worked seamlessly together providing flawless service and friendly conversation. Nome had a generously poured Cabernet and I enjoyed a robust craft brewed IPA while we shared a delicious flatbread “pizza.” Our tab was right at twenty dollars. We had a great time. San Elijo Hills happy hours and Double Peaks sunsets can be addictive,

The Commandant of the Marine Corps was General Al Gray, a crusty old 'Field Marine.' He loved his Marines and often slipped into the mess hall wearing a faded old field jacket without any rank or insignia on it. He would go through the chow line just like a private. In this way, he was assured of being given the same rations that the lowest enlisted man received. Woe be it to the mess officer if the food was found to be unfit in quality or quantity. Upon becoming Commandant, General Gray was expected to do a great deal of 'formal entertaining'...fancy dinner parties in full dress blue uniform. Now, the General would rather have been in the field eating cold 'C-rats' around a fighting hole with a bunch of young 'hard charging' Marines. But the General knew his duty and as a Marine he was determined to do it to the best of his ability.
During these formal parties, a detachment of highly polished Marines from 'Eighth and Eye' (Marine Barracks located at 8th and I Streets in Washington, D.C., home of the Silent Drill Team) were detailed to assume the position of 'parade rest' at various intervals around the ballroom where the festivities were being held.
At some point during one of these affairs, a very refined, blue-haired lady picked up a tray of pastries and went around the room offering confections to the guests. When she noticed these Marines in dress blues, standing like sculptures all around the room, she was moved with admiration. She knew that several of these men were fresh from our victory in Kuwait . She made a beeline for the closest Lance Corporal, drew near him and asked, 'Would you like pastry young man?' The young Marine snapped to 'attention' and replied, "I don't eat that crap, Ma'am." Just as quickly, he resumed the position of 'parade rest.' His gaze remained fixed on

The fancy lady was completely taken aback! She blinked, her eyes widened, her mouth dropped open. So startled was she that she immediately began to doubt what she had heard. In a quivering voice she asked, "W-W-What did you say?"

because of the weather, but there are few fish to be caught. Signs are posted with “Save our fish.” There is a big concern that the waters have been overfished.
The Marine snapped back to the position of 'attention' (like the arm of a mousetrap smacking it's wooden base). Then he said, '"I don't eat that crap, Ma'am." And just as smartly as before, back to the position of 'parade rest' he went. This time, there was no doubt. The fancy lady immediately became incensed and felt insulted. After all, here she was an important lady, taking the time to offer something nice to this enlisted man (well below her station in life), and he had the nerve to say THAT to HER! She exclaimed, "Well! I never...!"
The lady remembered that she had met that military man in charge of all these 'soldiers' earlier. She spotted General Gray from across the room. He had a cigar clenched between his teeth and a camouflaged canteen cup full of bourbon in his left hand. He was talking to a group of 1st and 2nd Lieutenants. So blue haired lady went straight over to the Commandant and interrupted. "General, I offered some pastry to that young man over there, and do you know what he told me?"
General Gray cocked his eyebrow, took the cigar out of his mouth and said, "Well, no Ma'am, I don't."
The lady took in a deep breath, confident that she was adequately expressing with her body language her considerable rage and indignation. As she wagged her head in cadence with her words, and she paused between each word for effect, 'She said, "I - don't - eat that - crap - Ma'am!''
The lieutenants were in a state of near apoplexy. A couple of them choked back chuckles, and turned their heads to avoid having their smirks detected. The next thought that most of them had was, 'God, I hope it wasn't one of MY Marines!' and the color left their faces. General Gray wrinkled his brow, cut his eyes in the direction of the lieutenants, put his free hand to his chin and muttered a subdued, "Hmmm Which one did you say it was Ma'am?," the General asked.
"That tall sturdy one right over there near the window, General," the woman said with smug satisfaction. One of the lieutenants began to look sick and put a hand on the wall for support. General Gray, seemed deep in thought, hand still to his chin, wrinkled brow. Suddenly, he looked up and his expression changed to one indicating he had made a decision.
He looked the fancy lady right in the eyes and said, "Well, screw him!
Financial generosity with the liberal Government has cut into the available work force. “No one wants to work, because of the money giveaway by the Government,” was the complaint of a restaurant owner. It sounded like home in the States. Pastor Richard Huls (Retired)
MY WORLD HAS CHANGED
On a recent trip to Nova Scotia, I discovered how much my world has changed. There was a time when I could enter Canada simply by answering a few questions. But that day has long gone. Now it is passports, Covid 19 tests, an extensive questionnaire, and long lines for security checks. I even had to remove my shoes and a vest, and be patted down from head to toe. The only thing missing was a dental check. Once in country wearing a mask was mandatory – no mask- no entry, even visiting outdoor historical sites. I did have the opportunity to talk to some natives. Fishing is tough, not

Driving through the country side of Nova Scotia was enjoyable, but I missed the maps. All directions were given by Siri, simply by our asking. I must say, though, that I miss looking at road maps. They seem to be a thing of the past, now found in antique stores. I was impressed with the appearance of the cemeteries. Apparently the Canadians, have a high regard for the deceased by dignifying graveyards or they like to mow the grass. One thing has not changed, in spite of Covid 19, modern technology, and the paranoia with the virus. It is the blessing of people, who want to share their lives in travel and experience. Such was true for me and for that I am grateful. Pastor Huls Call 760-746-6611 for counsel and help.

San Marcos • Mayor Rebecca Jones San Marcos Honors Veterans
Although our beloved Veterans Day Ceremony will again be virtual this year, I would like to invite all community members to watch my virtual address honoring all veterans online. It will be posted at www.san-marcos.net on Nov. 11.
This year’s theme is centered on the centennial commemoration of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and recognizes all who served in Afghanistan, in light of the recent withdrawal of American troops. A short flag exchange ceremony will occur at Helen Bougher Memorial Park at 10 a.m. Nov. 11, featuring San Marcos High School Junior ROTC students. The ceremony will include flag folding, a rifle team performance, a cadet speaker, a moment of silence, a cadet playing taps on the bugle and a flag exchange. Let’s all remember the great heroes among us, and in our memories, by honoring those who have served, and continue to serve.

Trees Are a Huge Asset to Vista
Trees are a huge asset to our city and Vista is creating a healthier urban forest. As part of the City’s Forest Renewal grant, we are planting two trees for every one removed to continue maximizing the benefits of the urban forest. Through the grant program, our Public Works Department will be removing trees that are diseased, pose a risk, or are dead. Maintaining a healthy, lowrisk, robust urban forest will help clean air, clean water, reduce noise pollution, encourage outdoor activity, and provide many other community benefits for our residents. Planting trees will also provide our current and future residents a healthier environment to live, work, and play! This will also lead to urban forest benefits beyond the lifetime of the grant!

Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” McNamara Greetings Escondido,
We are now well into the Fall holiday season. And recently we’ve had a traffic accident and a fire in the city. So, while not trying to sound like the nagging parent, I want to share a few thoughts on safety.
As some of you may know, I was a pilot in the Marine Corps and as you might imagine safety was a big deal. So those lessons taught to me have influenced other aspects of my life. Here are a couple that I want to share. One is that when you are stressed or overworked, which happens to all of us, it can cause enough of a distraction that makes you miss things, like a light turning red. Another is that an accident is a chain of events, and if you can break the chain you can prevent the accident. That could be a friend making sure you shouldn’t be driving after a night on the town.
So, let’s take care of each other and have each other’s “6.” Let’s get through the season with happy memories of friends and family and not tragedy. Stay informed, Be Kind, Remember your neighbor, and Stay safe! Semper Fi, Mac

What’s happened to us?
Technology has expanded human knowledge to the point where many of us have lost confidence in our ability to figure things out for ourselves. In seems an overwhelming and futile effort to sift through the mountains of conflicting information and come to logic based rational, conclusions. It is much easier to trust someone else to find the answers for us and just hand them over. We don’t need to understand the logic behind our conclusions as long as they satisfy us emotionally. All we need is the short cuts and the hash tags. As emotional rather than rational beings, we are no longer capable of putting up logical arguments to defend our conclusions. It is obvious that those who disagree with us must be either stupid or evil. It is only proper that they be shouted down or cancelled.

“Identity Politics” is the tool we use to simplify our understanding of world conflicts and problems. Each individual must be assigned to at least one “Identity group” The identity group may be based on race, gender, body shape, political affiliation, nationality, sexual orientation, occupation, club membership and just about any other recognizable group identity. Once we assign a few positive or negative attributes to the “identity group” we can then deal effectively with the individuals in it by simply assuming that they are all either cursed or blessed with the “identity groups” negative or positive assets. Identity politics makes it so much easier to know who you should love or hate.
Since you’re reading this, you’re part of at least this “identity group.” You’re a reader of “The Paper.” About 25,000 copies of “The Paper” are printed and distributed each week. No one knows exactly how many of them actually get read and what articles and features are most read and there are no studies that expose the demographics of “The Paper’s” readers. In the twenty plus years we’ve written this weekly column, we’ve come to know many of the paper’s columnists and feature writers and enjoyed hundreds of conversations with our customers and friends concerning the contents of “The Paper.” From that association we’ve arrived at an opinion concerning the age and political views of a large percentage of The Paper’s loyal readership. We conclude that the majority of The Paper’s readers are over fifty years old and tend to be politically conservative.
The Appraiser’s Corner Bisque Dolls By Jeff Figler
Have you ever walked into an antique store and been amazed at the dolls that look so real? I know I have. Some of the dolls take you back to the old times. The time of the fashions of the period. The dolls are so lifelike that you stare at them wondering how they can be so real. Well, many of those vintage dolls are actually “bisque dolls”. They are often called porcelain dolls. They were commonly made in the late 1860s, and were unglazed porcelain. In the 1860s, several French doll firms created the first unglazed porcelain dolls. These porcelain, or termed bisque dolls allowed for a more realistic skin tone. They are still made even today. But since they are so breakable and expensive, they are not made for play dolls. Thus, the bisque dolls are only made today for collectors. But, in the 1860s when they were first made, the bisque dolls were very popular, until the early 1900s. Then in the 1980s they become more popular once more, as collectors were attracted to the realistic features of the dolls. A doll is considered bisque if the head is made of bisque. However,
bisque is heavy, and only small dolls were known to be made entirely of bisque. Small bisque dolls were often called “penny dolls”.
Throughout history literally thousands of companies have manufactured bisque dolls. Most of them first began in France, but many then started in the Thuringa region of Germany in the late 1800s. It was not until the early 1900s when bisque dolls were first made in the United States. Today, most dolls are made in, you guessed it, China. You would be shocked at the cost of some of the dolls. They go from just a few dollars to over $200,000. Most of the dolls today are in the $20 to $500 range. It all depends on the materials used, as well as how unique the doll is. As you can expect, collecting dolls is extremely popular. Many doll collectors have had to decide whether to collect dolls made of bisque or of high quality vinyl. Some collectors will have dolls made of both. Many doll companies will make dolls made of both vinyl and bisque. Some will only make one or the other, as is the case with the Marie Osmond Company. It only makes bisque dolls.
The practitioners of “Identity Politics” would conclude that if you read The Paper you cannot be either a liberal or under 50 years old. “Identity Politics” doesn’t allow or understand the individual differences and motivations that transcend its narrow view of reality. So no matter what your political persuasion or age is, you are special. If
Bisque dolls can be broken more easily than vinyl dolls, but can last for centuries. Bisque doll collectors should be able to decide if a particular doll is more valuable than another. Often, the way the doll’s face is painted will determine the value. But the quality of the bisque is important as well. The bisque should not have too many black flecks or pin holes. Also, the bisque should not be chalky or heavy.
A bisque doll that is well-painted should have finely detailed painted eyelashes and eyebrows, welldefined lips, and cheek blush that is not too blotchy. Bisque dolls fall into three types, adult fashion dolls, baby dolls, and character dolls. Character dolls depict a certain costume or personality. Of course, collectors are captivated by bisque dolls. They are often passed from generation to generation, and are a treasured heirloom.
When bisque dolls ae auctioned, prices can vary. Take these prices for example. A pair of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt vintage dolls were auctioned for just under $500, while a pair of Georgene Averill Bisque Bonnie babe dolls from 1926 went for $900. Bisque dolls have gone for much higher amounts as well. A black bebe
you are under thirty and reading this you are exceptional because most of your age group no longer reads printed material. If you are not a political conservative and you find something of value in spite of the conservative tone, you are to be congratulated on your tolerance of differing political opinions. If you are of a conservative bent and over fifty years old, we’re preaching to the choir.
doll went for $47,500, while an extremely rare French bisque doll by Albert Marque was auctioned for an astounding $150,000.
Doll collectors are one of the largest groups of collectors. Most bisque doll collectors are women, and they are very much aware of what make up a valuable doll. They just need to remember to put the dolls in display cases where they are out of harm’s way. Jeff Figler is a professional certified appraiser. Generally speaking, businesses want to set up a system like that. They'll sell more product. It also makes sense to make it difficult to cancel or to send the product back. That may be what was happening to you. The company's supposed inability to refund back to your credit card was an indication of that. I contacted Green Ape on your behalf. It did not respond to me directly. But a short while later, I heard back from you.
You reported that they refunded the full amount to your credit card, even though they claimed they couldn't send the money back to your card and needed to charge you a restocking fee.

Government (COGG) meeting. The program is a very timely topic -- presented by Todd Maddison, parent of three children in San Diego. He is a founding member of the San Diego Schools and Parent Association and also the San Diego Chairman of the California School Foundation. The California School Choice Foundation believes the answer to this challenging problem is to provide parents with a choice of where to spend their children's education dollars, be it a public, charter or accredited private school. Therefore, they are working to put an initiative on the 2022 ballot, the Educational Freedom Act, an amendment to the state constitution guaranteeing parents the right to choose the best education for their kids, to be funded by the state. Basically, this would provide a state funded Educational Savings Account for each child of $14,000 per year (currently), and should not increase the cost of education to our taxpayers.
The meeting opens at 11:30 at Bernardo Heights Country Club, 16066 Bernardo Heights Blvd., Rancho Bernardo, with lunch at 12 noon. Cost is $35/person. RSVP by November 6th to ensure a meal and seating. Register on the website at COGGrb.org, by phone to Blair Lawson at 858.217.6996, or email blawson@san.rr.com. The current two-acre park which features over 12 amusement park thrill rides, gift shops, live entertainment, 14 midway games, restaurants, and unique “over-theocean food and retail outlets,” and even nightclubs, is reminiscent of the 1920s and 1930s era which draws both young and old from around the world! But California’s solar-powered Ferris Wheel, known as the “Pacific Wheel” is, ironically, (often) more well-known around the world than even here in America because of various Asian and European television and newscast coverage all of which holds the world’s fascination (and endorsement) for solar power usage in the world today!
The popular British pay TV channel, Sky Comedy, features California’s the “Pacific Wheel” in its visual opening credits, continuing and adding to its steady exposure abroad! Little wonder that California has easily become the chant of world travelers: “thee place I’d most like to be when visiting the USA.”
THERE ARE MORE NATIONAL PARKS IN CALIFORNIA THAN ANY OTHER AMERICAN STATE. True. False.
Correct answer is true. California has the most national parks in the entire United States with a total number of nine. The United States has 63 national parks, which are Congressionallydesignated protected areas operated by the National Park Service, an agency of the Department of the Interior. Thirty states have national parks, including U. S. territories, such as the Virgin Island, etc.
The 1200-square mile Yosemite Park is among the most beautiful in the world.
And the Sequoia National Forest in Sierra Nevada, California, is world-renowned for its living ancient giant redwood and sequoia trees. Many of these ancient trees were alive more than eleven centuries before Egypt’s pyramids were even built!
California has too many natural park attractions to list here.
Many California regions, such as with San Diego County, have temperature variation so that tourists can actually freely choose recreational activities, such as snow skiing, water skiing, or visiting the hot climate of deserts -- all in the same afternoon and within the same

HOW MANY ACTIVE & INACTIVE VOLCANOES DOES CALIFORNIA HAVE? A. None. B. 10 C. 20
Correct answer is “C.” The state of California has a total of 20 volcanoes. Many of California’s volcanoes have been inactive for long periods of time, although others exhibit evidence of recent volcanic activity. WHICH CALIFORNIA LOCALE HELD THE 1984 OLYMPIC “EQUESTRIAN ENDURANCE JUMPING EVENT”? A. Los Angeles County. B. San Diego County. C. San Francisco County.
If you missed this one, don’t pull your hair out by the roots, because you’re not alone.
In fact, most people guess incorrectly because the Olympics are precise events measured and governed by technical guidelines and nomenclature.
Simply put, the correct answer is – shockingly – “B” for San Diego County! While the 1984 Summer Olympics was officially hosted by Los Angeles, not all events – as is often
customary in past Games – are always held within the locale of the official host city, itself (in this case Los Angeles).
The 1984 Summer Olympic Equestrian Events included: Show Jumping, Dressage, and Endurance Jumping Eventing. San Diego County hosted the Endurance Jumping Event. As explained by the International Olympic Committee: “The Equestrian Sports were held primarily at Santa Anita Racetrack, which offered stabling for up to 2100 horses, along with a grandstand with almost 16,000 seats, and which was managed by experienced horsemen. “Fairbanks Ranch Country Club in San Diego County hosted the ‘Endurance Jumping Event’ portion of the three-day Equestrian events.”
Prince Phillips of Great Britain was President of The International Equestrian Federation at the time and was given over six (6) different city locations to choose for this exciting portion of the Endurance/Jumping Events-- and Prince Phillips easily and eagerly chose San Diego County’s perfect Fairbanks Ranch locale.
