Just imagine, the newest global research is now suggesting that a dementia syndrome originated in ancient Egypt around 3,000 B.C.
All of which gives renewed meaning to the old scientific proverb: “The Science Graveyard is full of old, outdated, dead scientific theories.” In King’s English: dementia now has a pedigree (with a recorded paper trail) far longer than initially The Paper - 760.747.7119

thought.
That’s when the ancient Egyptian written records were discovered from Prince Ptah-Hotep (23752350 B.C.) during the reign of Pharoah Djedkare in the Fifth Dynasty, who mentioned “senile deterioration,” which for the ancient Egyptians “was an unfortunate ‘consequence of time’ in the deterioration process of ageing.” And although the dementia disease is now believed to have been (recorded) over 5,000 years ago in
ancient Egypt, the actual name, itself (‘dementia’) – is a lot more recent.
‘dementia.’ (National Library of Medicine, the Center for Biotechnology Information.)
It is there, in the archbishop’s pioneering book, “Etymologies” when the world first heard the word
“The history of dementia is probably as old as humankind, itself,” according to The Brain Research Institute at the University of
The word ‘dementia’ first appeared circa 600 A. D., a little more than 14 centuries back in time and is originally derived from Latin, meaning “out of one’s mind,” and was first coined by Saint Isidore (560-635 A.D.), who was the Archbishop of Seville, Spain.
Dementia
DEMENTIA IS AS OLD AS HUMANKIND. Long before it was recorded in ancient Egypt, and long before it was given a description and a name, dementia as a disease, has been around since the dawn of human civilization.

As long as there has been a human brain, and ageing, there have been imperfections, cognitive impairments and brain degenerative diseases.
HOW PREVALENT IS DEMENTIA WORLDWIDE TODAY? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are over 55 million people living with dementia worldwide, today. Every 65 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s or other form of dementia. Tragically, it is the 7th leading cause of death among all the world’s diseases today.
COPING WITH DEMENTIA VARIES FROM CASE TO CASE. “I think of dementia as a ‘living death,’” says Bill Forward, whose wife of over 60 years was diagnosed with the dreaded mental disease at the age of 70. “Yes, it’s a living death, because, it slowly steals the life from a person without actually killing them.
“And you’re forced to watch these once-lovely things that were once so normal – such as reading and writing and remembering loved ones – all so natural and all so part of

being what you truly are as a human being . . . then it is all slowly and cruelly robbed and stolen away from you.” Bill and Gladys Forward were childhood sweethearts since the age of eight, and their lives were featured in a “60-Minutes” segment on Australian television. That heart-wrenching story of the unconquerable and unbreakable bonds of love -- in the face of dementia -- grew ‘legs’ when it was further featured in a documentary titled “True Love,” which went viral on the global internet with well over 7 million views, and counting.
Little did the world know at the time, that Bill’s personal way of coping with dementia would inspire countless millions around the world.
COPING SOMETIMES LEADS TO ANSWERS OUTSIDE THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY. In the case of Bill Forward, he felt helpless and hopeless in stopping dementia from ravaging and stealing away the love of his life, Gladys, by erasing her memory banks. Then, the agony seemed endless and without mercy, when his wife also lost her sight in both eyes.

We’re still asked – at least a couple of times a day – why we moved to Aridzona.
And have to explain away that look of askance when the questioners learn we’ve moved here from San Diego.
This move from paradisiacal Pacific Beach cooled by a breeze that’s kissed some 7,000 miles of ocean to the middle of Aridzona was seeded years ago when Bev began a campaign to move close to daughter and grandkids. I saw no reason to leave the Golden State and the best climate in the galaxy until …

They were engaging and smiling when I first knocked on their door. Gradually, they would take a bit longer to answer, the house became darker and, soon after, strangers (caregivers — usually in hospital scrubs) would take the meal from me and the man of the house, or the woman, or both might wave from a chair as they oozed too quickly into a drooling sleeping lump. It's Veterans Season; Honor Flight Trip Wrap - What an exciting October we had! We were able to take 93 veterans on the first Honor Flight from San Diego in two years. Tune in to ABC Channel 10 on Veterans Day at 7:30pm for an ABC 10 Special Edition Show about Honor Flight San Diego. We saw, after a really tough 18 months of pandemic, isolation, and quarantine, that our veterans really needed this. They told their stories, they bonded, saw sites they never have, made friends, and were truly honored. THANK YOU to all who made this trip possible by volunteering, donating financially and coming out to the emotional homecoming. We were fortunate to have ABC Channel 10 reporter, Leah Pezzetti, with us. To catch all her stories from the trip, here's a recap to each of them.
Dementia Continued from Page 2
His childhood sweetheart and lifelong love was now not only ravaged by dementia, but she was now thrust into the eternal darkness without sight. For husband, Bill, the agony and torture seemed boundless, and unspeakably cruel.
But then, Bill, did the next best thing.
In his own way, he decided to wage war against dementia . . . and to no longer feel completely helpless. He took it upon himself to, literally, build a new passageway of love and fun between himself and his loving wife – a bridgeway which could never be erased or taken away.
With the help of a friend, his brainchild was to create a way to physically connect one of his wife’s wheelchairs to the front of his bicycle.
“SHE CAN ONCE AGAIN FEEL THE WIND IN HER HAIR!” The custom-made tandem bicycle became, in reality, a magical chariot which rescued and freed Gladys so she could, once again, rediscover her freedom of fun and excitement which defined her earlier life traveling abroad with her husband, Bill.
On Sunday, November 14th, at the Del Mar Racetrack, Honor Flight San Diego has been invited to a special suite at the races. Doors open at 11am and the first race begins at 12:30pm. “When we’re on the bike, she can hear and can feel the wind in her hair. All those things are really nice for her!” says Bill with excitement. “If the weather is good, and I can, I like to go for a ride at least three times a week,” he adds with youthful enthusiasm.
This most remarkable and powerful story of Bill and Gladys Forward, and Bill’s refusal to give in completely to dementia, fascinated a planet of people in every civilized country.
And although her mind has been shackled by dementia, and her sight completely struck from her, the two can still be seen laughing openly in the bright sunlight of life, as their tandem bike makes its way around the cities of Mooloolaba or Caloundra -- both 9 miles apart from each other -- in sunny Queensland, Australia. Someone, somewhere along the line, forgot to tell Bill Forward that he is completely helpless in battling his wife’s dementia. “She’s my princess,” says Bill. “And I’m her Prince William and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
After the film went viral around the planet, countless requests poured in from around the globe from other dementia families asking where they could buy such a ‘magical and therapeutic’ bike like the one used by Bill and Gladys.

Bill’s own personal and creative coping method, resulted in Australia’s Local Charity 121 Care Project to announce plans to produce a bike like Bill’s and began taking orders so that others may also share a renewed dream.
Today, both Bill and beloved wife Gladys can be seen and heard laughing, clapping their hands, and frolicking in unbridled joy, and making the best of life possible.
FAMILY SHAME & SOCIAL STIGMA OF DEMENTIA. Down through the decades, dementia (and all its varied forms), has a long dubious history of social stigma and family shame. It wasn’t that long ago when families hid grandma or grandpa from view and exposure to visitors, neighbors, and friends. Surprisingly, that stigma still persists today.
A recent survey conducted by The Alzheimer’s Disease International Dementia Study, revealed “that 24% (almost one-quarter) of all respondents said that they hide their history of diagnosis with dementia mainly due to social stigma.” Such isolation of a dementia family member compounds the condition and makes the situation even

Vaccine Pioneer Lived Locally For many months, the vaccines developed to address Covid-19 have dominated world headlines. But it was not that many years ago that another deadly virus faced the world. The illness was known as polio, the developer of the vaccine was Dr. Jonas Salk, and he once lived in North County.
To honor the memory of the f a m e d doctor/scientist, the Va l l e y Center History Museum has added Dr. Jonas Salk Dr. Salk to its permanent exhibition of celebrated persons who have lived in the area. The community in which he lived was Pauma Valley and, according to archival data at the Valley Center Historical Society, he came to the area in the 1960s and lived in a secluded house on the historic 4,000 acre Rincon Ranch. she needed it for any length of time.
So the decision was made to make a move. If we were going to move into what now is called an “independent living” community, we might as well look at moving in Bev’s direction – to Aridzona. During our Christmas visit to the Grand Canyon State with the grandkids last year, I asked everyone – almost stopped people on the street — what they liked and didn’t like about the place. Without hesitation, they all pointed out that there are four months of hell – The Summer Heat. The rest of the year is great. We knew from visiting that everything here is cheaper than in California — gasoline, health insurance, auto insurance, groceries, taxes, housing, everything.
One day in the shower, I looked down at one of my hands. It was the hand of an old man. I also realized that, should Bev fall, I could no longer pick her up. And, if I fell, she sure as heck couldn’t pick me up.
Friends and family concerned that we “weren’t ready” for an old-farts’ facility urged us to buy a condo before hurling ourselves pell mell into a senior citizens’ complex. That

the income generated by the gas sales tax is declining.
He points out, “a Public Transportation system that actually gets you where you want to go in a timely manner is the goal. The region doesn’t have that now. The cost of that system is estimated to be 163 billion dollars, and as we all know it won’t be cheaper in the future. One possible funding source (remember there are dozens in the plan) is a ½ cent sales tax. That increase would need to be approved by the voters in the region. SANDAG or the SANDAG Board do not have the authority to tax without it going to the voters first.”
Pfeiler: “Well, with any new legislation there is often a knee jerk reaction. As legislators we have to exammine the issues without emotion and look at the facts. This is one proposed legislation that the public seems to be up in arms about . . . but Mac makes a good point; it needs to be studied thoroughly.”
He says there is a lot if misinformation floating around, much of it bering generated by the media, that is inciting needless panic and anger.
In 2015 the SANDAG Board unanimously approved to consider an alternate to the gas sales tax. It is called the Road Usage Charge (RUC). You may have heard it called “track and tax” and that it is an additional tax which is false. It is simply alternate way to collect the same monies. The RUC replaces the Gas Sales tax which goes away. There is no increase. The gas sales tax pays for maintaining the current road infrastructure. It is a regressive tax, meaning the lower your income the more it impacts you. The problem is that
dling clothes. I remember it as though it were yesterday. There was a big star in the sky and there were these three strangers who dressed kinda funny and spoke even funnier. I thought at first they may have come from Alabama as one of them had a banjo on his knee.
Mary, my ex-wife and lifelong pal, came into my office that morning with a cup of tea and a couple of cookies . . . and then dashed out to grab a phone, intending to call 911 to report this strange man sitting at my desk. He was an old guy. Yes, it's true he was remarkably handsome for his advanced years . . . rather distinguished and sophisticated looking in fact.
Just to be certain, Mary peeked back into the office and then realized there was something strangely familiar about this elderly gentleman. Aside from being really, really old she thought she recognized certain characteristics about him. He seemed so . . . debonair. And he typed really, really fast. And he tended to keep his eyes on the computer screen, only pausing now and then to sip on a cup of hot tea, which she had left before beating a hasty retreat.
Then it hit her. Why, this old guy was the father of the two sons they had. It was the one . . . the only . . . the humble and very modest . . . lyle e davis!
Former Escondido Mayors Ernie Cowan and Lori Holt Pfeiler also addressed the issue: Cowan: “I’m totally opposed to the Road Usage Charge . . but I appreciate Mayor Mac defending his position and analysis. I just don’t agree with it.”
Mayor McNamara touches on the subject briefly in this week’s column and promises to go into more detail in subsequent week’s columns. Mayors McNamara, (Escondido), Mayor Rebecca Jones (San Marcos) and Mayor Judy Ritter, (Vista) will also be queried and The Paper will provide their thoughts in subsequent issues. Mayor McNamara goes on to say, “It is important to remember that the detailed plan on a potential road usage charge doesn’t exist yet. So, conclusions of possible disaster are based on conjecture and not facts. the goal is to develop a program that is fair, flexible, and sustainable. The start date for any change is 2030. And the public will have lots of opportunity to give input. Then there was great rejoicing. This old codger was still with us. Would he make if for yet another year? Was he able to talk reasonably well? Walk reasonably well? Was he . . . and then she decided to give the Supreme Test. She approached him and gave him a great big old fashioned Smooch!
Well! His eyes lit up, he got up out of his chair and proceeded to chase Mary down the hall, both of them giggling like school kids. Yup. lyle e davis is alive and well.

worse. The earlier the medical intervention, the better the disease can be slowed.
THERE SHOULD BE NO SHAME OR ISOLATION -- YOU’RE NOT ALONE. Many of the world’s most famous people had dementia. What follows is only a partial list of notables who suffered from dementia, along with their plea for greater public awareness and education so that early treatment can be utilized. NORMAN ROCKWELL (18941978. Famous American painter Norman Rockwell, who was wellknown for iconic illustrations on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post, succumbed to Alzheimer’s, which is the most common form of dementia. Rockwell’s paintings are now occasionally used in dementia therapy because of the “memories and nostalgia” they evoke in dementia patients today.
SINGER PERRY COMO (19122001). Popular singer and television personality during the 1950s and 1960s, Perry Como became an iconic figure who performed periodically during his later years, especially during the Christmas Season. Mr. Como suffered from Alzheimer’s for two years before passing away in 2001. Como spent more than 50 years in the entertainment business and was internationally respected, in and out of show business.
CIVIL RIGHTS PIONEER, ROSA PARKS (1913-2005). American black civil rights activist, Rosa Parks, was known as “The Mother of the Freedom Movement” after her arrest for refusing to relinquish her bus seat during the Civil Rights Movement. She later wrote her autobiography and continued to live a quiet life before eventually being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
SINGER, GLENN CAMPBELL (1936-2017). In the pantheon of the greatest singers and musicians in the entire sweep of human history, few compare to Glen Campbell, whose musical accomplishments, literally, are beyond the reach of most mortals. Considered one of the greatest singers and guitarist of all-time, his talents seemed universal as he became a Hollywood movie actor when he was handpicked to co-star with John Wayne in the classic Western film, “True Grit” (he also sang the title song “True Grit” which stunned the world of film-making, earning him a rare Academy Award (Oscar) nomination. His fame was so gargantuan that he no longer just belonged to America, but an entire world embraced him: when he hosted his own music and variety show “The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour” on CBS television, all of the four-year episodes were also aired in foreign countries, such as Great Britain, Australia, and even in Asian countries, like Singapore, where English is only one of four languages spoken. name was spoken in Mandarin Chinese, Malay, and Tamil and Southeastern Asians sang in their own dialects, his towering songs, such as Gentle on My Mind, By the Time I Get to Phoenix, Wichita Lineman, Galveston, Rhinestone Cowboy, and Southern Nights. He became a rare global superstar with over 70 albums, selling over 45 million worldwide records, including 12 Gold albums, 4 Platinum albums, and even a doublePlatinum. Paul McCartney of the Beatles called him one of the greatest guitarists in history, and Dolly Parton hailed him as “One of the greatest singers of all-time.” Sadly, Glen Campbell announced in 2011 that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. He completed his “Goodbye Tour” after performing for over 50 years in the music and television industry, winning a historic 12 Grammy Awards. If I could only pick ten musicians/singers to listen to on a deserted island for the remainder of my life, Glen Travis Campbell would be secure as one of my all-time favorite choices. ACTOR, CHARLTON HESTON (1923-2008). Charlton Heston’s most famous movie role was when he portrayed Moses in “The Ten Commandments.” Heston publicly announced that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Heston left a long legacy in both films and political activism.
POLITICIAN, BARRY GOLDWATER (1909-1998). Barry M. Goldwater, 5-time U. S. senator from Arizona and 1964 presidential candidate, ended his public appearances in late 1996 after he suffered a massive stroke. Family members then disclosed that he was in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. He died at age 89. ACTOR, PETER FALK (19272011). Peter Falk gained national prominence as a star on the TV series “Columbo” (which is still in re-runs). Towards the end of his life his personal physician reported that Falk could no longer even remember his famous character Columbo. Alzheimer’s disease was one of the underlying causes for his death.
ACTOR, JIMMY STEWART (1908-1997). Jimmy Stewart was one of America’s favorite actors and is immortalized in such films as “Harvey,” “Rear Window” and “It’s a Wonderful Life” as well as many popular western roles. Stewart remained active until his death in 1997, having been slowed down greatly by the advancement of Alzheimer’s and another illness which ultimately lead to his death at the age of 89. ED SULLIVAN (1901-1974). Though he was many things, including sports and entertainment reporter and syndicated columnist for the New York Daily News, Ed Sullivan was best known for the variety show that bears his name, “The Ed Sullivan Show,” which ran 23 years from 1948 to 1971. In a 2012 radio interview, 38 years after his death, Joan Rivers disclosed that Sullivan had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease toward the end
of his life. And in a 1990 press conference, famed Beatles member, Paul McCartney, recalled a meeting with Ed Sullivan in the 1970s. It was a most sad encounter. McCartney kept trying to remind Ed that he was one of the Beatles. But, sadly, the elderly Irishman had no clue as to who the man was standing before him. Nor did Sullivan seem to recall any such group as The Beatles. Sullivan, in the grip of Alzheimer’s, could only smile at McCartney’s persistent efforts to jog his memory. He knew not McCartney, nor did he recall the Beatles, the very group he showcased ‘live’ to the New World for the very first time. It was the saddest reunion between the two inexorable forces who changed the world they both lived in.
Despite Paul McCartney’s heartwrenching urgings, the great Ed Sullivan – who once vocalized the greatest introductions in the history of entertainment – fell silent. He could not remember Paul McCartney, whom he once hugged as a son. Still smiling and nodding, Ed merely shook Paul’s hand. And then he slowly turned. And left.
In early September of 1974, X-rays revealed that Sullivan had advanced esophageal cancer. Doctors gave him very little time to live. Due to his dementia and increasing forgetfulness, the family decided to keep the deadly diagnosis from him. Considering his Alzheimer’s condition, it was the most merciful and practical decision. Five weeks later, at New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital, Ed Sullivan made his final exit from the world at age 73, with his cause of death officially listed from esophageal cancer. BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, MARGARET THATCHER (19252013). Often referred to as “The Iron Lady,” Margaret Thatcher would become the first woman to be British Prime Minister from 1970-1990 and thus hailed as “One of the seminal political figures of the 20th century.” Margaret Thatcher’s daughter, Baroness Carol Thatcher, published her memoirs dealing with her mother’s advancing dementia. It is a most heart-wrenching account bravely made public against this wretched disease. Her daughter writes: “I almost fell off my chair. Watching her struggle with her words and her memory, I couldn’t believe it. She was in her 75th year but I had always thought of her as ageless, timeless and 100% cast-iron damage-proof.” Her daughter further voices feelings of helplessness in trying to aid her mother during her inevitable mental decline: “Sufferers (of dementia) look and act the same but beneath the familiar exterior something quite different is going on. They’re in another world and you cannot enter.” Such open dialogue and painful sharing of her mother’s dementia
greatly promotes “awareness” and “public education” on the value of early detection and treatment. The former Prime Minister’s daughter describes her mother’s struggle and great effort to complete sentences and the sad realization that her mother no longer even remembered where she lived, nor did she recall that her husband Denis Thatcher was long-dead. On April 8, 2013, former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher died of a stroke in London at the age of 87.
COMEDIAN ROBIN WILLIAMS (1951-2014). Famous comedian and film star, Robin Williams, had a relatively less common disease that mimics Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and schizophrenia. The complexity of these interwoven maladies astounded doctors and were not easily detected because of their over-lapping traits. According to Robin Williams’ widow, an autopsy revealed that the comedian suffered from Lewy bodies dementia. His widow, Susan Schneider Williams, publicly revealed that he was also struggling with depression and early stages of Parkinson’s disease. Along with the little-known Lewy bodies dementia which “mimics” or “impersonates” other diseases, and causes dementia in the brain, it was not even discovered – let alone suspected – until it was found during the autopsy examination. All four doctors who had reviewed Robin Williams’ medical record said they were shocked at the intensity of his condition, calling it: “One of the worst pathologies they had ever seen!” Williams was also thought to be plagued by manic-depression or bipolar illness which further complicated the already “mixed-bag” of maladies within him.
For nearly a year prior to his suicide, Robin Williams was aware of his deteriorating mental faculties and kept saying: “I just want to reboot my brain!” He tried in vain to find out what was going on inside of him, undergoing extensive tests and even scans. He tried various prescribed medications, physical therapy, even self-hypnosis. The sad fact was that, according to his widow: “Robin was losing his mind and he was aware of it. Can you imagine the pain he felt as he experienced himself disintegrating?” After his death, she would write of her ordeal and the painful and desperate search for a cure for her husband’s mysterious illness in an article she titled: “The Terrorists Inside My Husband’s Brain.” In the months preceding his suicide, Robin Williams was onset by paranoia and confusion and increasing loss of memory. While filming “Night at the Museum 3” during the spring of 2014, he would sometimes have panic attacks on the movie set and had great difficulty remembering even one line of dialogue as he attempted to portray

Mary Davis, ex-wife of my editor/boss/owner of The Paper -Mr. Lyle e. Davis, emerged from his palatial office and encountered me with: "Would you like to see the artwork for your cover story next week?" The invitation to me was like: "Would you like to unwrap your Christmas presents early?"
I could scarcely wait as I heard myself mumble in disbelief, "Yes, please. I would LOVE to." I followed and turned right and then another 'hard right' and eventually stepped into my publisher's office and there it was.
In front of me. So personal. So beautiful. So rapturous, that it -literally -- took my breath away! There in full colour, was the cover artwork for my California’s Unbelievable Secrets (for the Nov. 4 issue of The Paper).
It was like looking at a Rembrandt. A Picasso. A Monet.
My eyes welled-up and my heart skipped a beat as I saw the wonder and beauty before me -- the very marvel that would represent what I struggled to present in prose! It was a photo graphics artwork of the historic 1984 U. S. Olympics Equestrian Events held at Fairbanks Ranch on August 1, 1984. A most glorious locale selected by Britain's Prince Charles, himself, as "perfect." An Olympic event telecast around the world from our very own back yard -- San Diego County! Our Graphics Arts Designer for The Paper is Lisa Scarpello.
To me, she is like a goddess in her field. She is a truly, truly gifted artist.
I left my editor's office feeling numb, and weak behind the knees.
Now, I sit and ponder what I have seen. Tomorrow, I actually can pick up, and hold to my breast, my brainchild story. And with dreamy eyes, I can sit -without words -- and simply marvel at Lisa Scarpello's artwork. Her inspiring artwork.
Which gave life to my cover story. Thank you, Lisa Scarpello.
Your praise is long overdue. Your biggest fan, Friedrich H. Gomez

Teddy Roosevelt in the movie script. In the past, he could easily remember hundreds of lines without a single error. Robin Williams would die four months before Night at the Museum 3 was released. The film was dedicated to his memory. In the end, the great comedian would succumb to suicide on August 11, 2014, at the age of 63.
How important is the retelling of such events? Listen to the pleas from Robin Williams’ widow, Susan, in her own words: “Hopefully from this sharing of our experience, you will be inspired to turn Robin’s suffering into something meaningful through your work and wisdom.” Then she added these final words regarding the need for ongoing research and the importance of never giving up efforts in promoting public awareness: “Please, do not give up!”
PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN (1911-2004). Known as “The Great Communicator,” the 40th U. S. President had few equals in the arena of debate “power punching” or playful jabs at the expense of his political adversaries. Off the cuff or off the script, Reagan’s quick mind and cerebral alertness could easily destroy an opponent’s accusations. When he was once asked a challenging question from a reporter, “How could an actor become president?” Reagan playfully adlibbed, “How can a president not be an actor?” Reagan’s sharp mind knew the subtle rules and nuances of surviving any debate: “If you’re explaining, you’re losing.”
Now standing before an adoring crowd on February 3, 1994, in Washington, D. C., during his 83rd Birthday Gala, he evoked both laughter and applause. After that rousing reception and his amusing anecdotes -- all memorized and delivered away from cue cards -the Reagans departed, leaving the audience wanting more. Nancy Reagan vividly remembered what happened as they made their way back to their hotel suite.
According to Dr. John Hutton, Reagan’s personal physician, when the Reagans reached their hotel suite in Washington, D. C. after his triumphant birthday reception, he hesitated near his room and said out loud: “Well, I have got to wait a minute. I am not quite sure where I am!” Startled, Nancy Reagan quickly said, “Now, Ronnie, your clothes are down at the end of this room and you go down and you will find out where they are.” Nancy then quickly turned to Dr. Hutton and said, “John, do you see what I mean?” Nancy had long suspected there was something troubling about her husband’s lapses in memory.

Unclogging the Ports
The San Pedro Port Complex handles 40% of containerized cargo that enters the United States. The Complex is also the primary gateway for all U.S. trade to Asia.
Disruptions in the global supply chain are driven by multiple factors. These include impacts of COVID-19 on the workforce and terminal operations, increased online shopping and more overseas purchases, lack of trucks and rail cars, lack of warehouse space to store containers, and a failure to implement modern port automation/efficiencies. So containers/cargo are piling up at California’s terminals, limiting supplies and increasing costs exponentially. For example, prepandemic, it cost around $2,000 to transport a 40-foot container from Asia to the U.S. That cost has skyrocketed to $25,000, and the time it takes to transfer a container from ship to truck has almost doubled. To make matters worse, an injunction by the U.S. Supreme Court is in place while it considers an appeal by the California Trucking Association to block implementation of AB 5, preventing independent truckers from operating in California. AB5 was supported by the California legislative majority in
2020 which is hurting the trucking industry. A decision is pending and should the Supreme Court decide not to take the case, the injunction will be lifted and the truck shortage crisis could become a catastrophe. So what can be done? On November 3rd the Senate and Assembly Select Committees on Ports and Goods Movement held a joint informational hearing to examine the scope of the crisis and recommend future state and federal action. Among proposed initiatives were extended gate hours at ports, encouraging land use and permit streamlining for container storage, lifting weight restrictions on priority routes, promoting temporary use of out-of-state trucks, evaluation of choke points, and longterm, encouraging automation upgrades. This serious situation is critical for California and the entire national economy. Coordinated state and federal action is essential. SANDAG’s Plan
Last week, SANDAG’s Board of Directors received a report on their $160 billion transportation plan. One of the big questions when it comes to their ‘ambitious’ plan is, how are they going to pay for it? Well, we are starting to get a clearer picture. One aspect is to track and tax all San Diegans. San Diegans would be charged a set price for every mile traveled within the State of California. The money collected from vehicle drivers would then be used to pay for public transportation.
On top of a local per-mile fee, the State of California wants to impose their own tax. The State’s is assumed at 2.3 cents per mile. SANDAG’s regional assumption is 2 cents per mile. That’s a total of 4.3 cents for every mile driven! Along with a per-mile fee, SANDAG plans to seek funding from a half-cent sales tax in 2024. This is on top of a half-cent sales tax that voters approved for promised road and highway improvements, back in 2008. They also plan to change 819 lane miles of San Diego’s freeways into toll lanes.
This proposal should never see the light of day. San Diegans already pay some of the highest prices to drive in the Country. From the current gas taxes to a vehicle registration tax, San Diegans feel the effects, in their wallets, every day. Adding another tax, to fund public transportation, is a slap in the face. I will not support any new taxes or fees upon San Diegans until the promised projects are completed.
SANDAG’s Board of Directors will vote on this entire proposal, on Friday, December 10th. In the meantime, tell your neighbors and tell your friends about this preposterous proposal. Contact your local SANDAG representative and speak out. San Diegans don’t want to pay an even higher amount to drive on our roads.

PROBLEM SOLVED BY CHRISTOPHER ELLIOTT
Q: I recently bought a Kenmore Elite refrigerator from Sears. I purchased the Master Protection Plan, which extends the coverage on the new appliance. The freezer didn't work. I called Sears and it sent a technician, who replaced a filter and recharged the unit. But that had no effect. Sears and the company I'm now dealing with, Transformco, have been hard to reach and not very accommodating. It turns out my refrigerator has a recall issue.
I'd like to get a refund for this refrigerator. Can you help me? -- Lorra Manuel, Chicago A: Look, Sears should have delivered a working refrigerator. And if it didn't work, then Sears should have fixed it quickly. I've reviewed the lengthy paper trail between you and the technicians at Transformco. It looks like you had problems with the freezer section, but also lengthy delays and difficulties reaching the company. And while it's true that Sears has had a series of problems recently, which have only been exacerbated by the pandemic, the fact remains: No company should sell an appliance it can't service.
I list the names, numbers and email addresses for the <a href="https://www.elliott.org/company-contacts/sears/">Sears executives</a> on my nonprofit consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org. Your case raises an interesting question: How do you persuade a company to escalate your complaint and take it seriously? Do you call? Write? Threaten to sue? How do you underscore that you need a working refrigerator without sounding like a whiner? Well, I think you did exactly what you should. You put your complaint in writing. You were polite, but firm. You didn't give up.
I could see that you were already in the process of escalating your case to the Sears executives, so I decided to wait until the process ended. It took a while, but Sears and Transformco finally approved a replacement refrigerator for you. You're still pursuing a claim for the loss of your frozen food, but with your persistence, I'm confident you will prevail.

TRAVEL TROUBLESHOOTER
BY CHRISTOPHER ELLIOTT
Q: My wife and I had reservations made by Skylux Discount Travel for a Delta Air Lines flight from San Francisco to Paris and Athens for October 2020. Delta canceled the flight because of COVID-19. I asked for a refund.
Delta refunded my fare to Skylux Discount Travel last November. Since then, despite numerous calls and emails, I have been unable to get them to refund my money. I keep being told it is coming, but it never does. Can you help me get my $7,399 back? -- Alan Rubin, Tiburon, Calif.
A: Skylux Discount Travel should have returned the money to you as soon as it had the refund from Delta. Under federal regulations, when an airline cancels a flight, you're owed an almost immediate refund to your credit card.
So what happened? Like so many other refund cases that have crossed my desk in the last year, I can only chalk this up to the COVID effect. Companies dragged their feet with refunds -- in your case, it wasn't the airline but the travel agent. You handled this one by the book. You kept your correspondence in writing, both with Delta and Skylux Discount Travel. You had case numbers and emails that you could pass along to me, which you did. Good work!
This is one of the drawbacks of working through a third party like a travel agency. Your airline refund has to go through another company, and creating a potential for delay. Why did Skylux Discount Travel keep your money for almost a year? Maybe it was experiencing an IT problem handling all the COVID refunds? Or maybe it wanted to keep the money as a kind of microloan. Who knows? I often wonder what would happen if the roles were reversed. How would travel agencies respond if customers decided to take their time paying for their plane tickets? What if we could take months or years to pay for our travel, long after taking our trips? Of course, the travel industry would descend into anarchy. So why is it OK if travel companies do it to us? When I checked on your case, it seemed as if Delta was looking into who had the money. But a few months later, it appeared as if your refund was still in the works. I found the <a href="https://www.elliott.org/company-contacts/skylux-travel-customer-service-contacts/">Skylux executive contacts</a> and reached out to them on your behalf. The Perils of Not Knowing Civics 101
Two years ago discussing the need for basic knowledge of civics, I wrote: “Within the next 20 years, our nation will be in serious trouble.” Forget two decades. The peril is here and now.
You may recall what Abraham Lincoln said as the Civil War began: “A house divided cannot stand.” As each national election passes it would seem, as a nation, we are truly becoming a “house divided.”
The World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans and most of their families soon will be gone. Why is that important? They represent the last of our society who received a somewhat rounded civics education, witnessed the effects of geopolitics, and had an understanding of basic American citizenship. If they didn’t learn it in school or college, the military did a pretty good job of filling in what might have been overlooked in class during elementary and high school. For those in today’s society under 40 years of age, most received no, or hardly any, basics in American history, civics, and world geography. Ask any from this age group if they can answer simple questions immigrants receive when they are going through their citizenship test routine and you might be shocked at the answers or lack thereof you may receive. We have college students today who can’t name their Congresstional representatives in Washington D.C., how many members make up the U.S. Senate, who’s the vice president, in what city is their state capital, where is the United Nations building, or name at least three of our founding fathers. What’s the difference between a “democracy” and a “republic?” How many of last summer’s protesters, especially the ones destructing private property and tearing down statues, had a few basic lessons in civics?
Sadly, too many from our latest generations haven’t a clue as to how our government works and what significance it has played in global politics. The American form of government is the first “democratic republic” to be created – and is still in existence.
Students of today have important tasks to do as voting citizens. They need to understand our Bill of
Rights, and what prompted Thomas Jefferson to write the Declaration of Independence. Why did we fight World War II – and more importantly – who won? It might be interesting to find out just how many of those recent protesters are newly naturalized citizens. Before being sworn in as citizens, they have to pass a test asking many questions about our country, government and history – things our native-born students of today don’t get. Now, you might think these are exaggerated questions, but try posing some of them to our native young and middle-aged people of today.
It is surprising, maybe even shocking, the lack of civic education our schools and colleges of today fail to provide students about our government and citizenship … Basic Civics 101. Simple things like … what is a “republic?” The difference between a democratic government and one that is a monarchy or a fascist dictatorship. How many people in today’s society know what the “Electoral College” is and what importance it played in the elections of 2000 and 2016. Remember this: Young people today will be in charge of the nation’s purse strings of tomorrow. They will be, or already are, voting. Wouldn’t you like for them to know what they’re doing? Today’s young people don’t know what they don’t know.
TEST YOURSELF -- To test yourself and anyone else you might want to query, try the below – all are from the basic citizenship test given to all immigrants before becoming naturalized U.S. citizens. Every voter should be able to answer at least half of these basic questions. 1. Who is in charge of the executive branch?
2. What is freedom of religion? . 3. How old do citizens have to be to vote for President? 4. If both the President and the Vice President can no longer serve, who becomes President? 5. What is the political party of the President now?
6. Who lived in America before the Europeans arrived?
7. What is a Constitutional amendment? 8. Who makes “Federal” laws?
9. What ocean is on the West Coast of the United States? 10. Name one U.S. territory.
11. Who was President during World War I? 12. At whom was the Declaration of

A Critic Has His Say
It didn’t take long before trying to rewrite history
It didn’t take long for Friedrich Gomez to try and rewrite history in his latest unlabeled opinion piece “If America falls, the Cause Must Spring Within Us!” In the article, he stated it was anarchists that attacked our nation’s Capitol on January 6. I agree that it was shocking and unprecedented, violent and deadly. But the use of word anarchists is a lie and a blatant attempt to rewrite history. The attack on our democratic system of government and the peaceful transfer of power was done by supporters of the former President Trump.
He had named the place, the time, and called his supporters to Washington and inspired them to attack the Capitol. He took delight as he watched the horror unfold from the White House. He wanted them to overturn the will of the people.
The attackers didn’t want to end government so they are not anarchists. They wanted to install their own choice for president event though over sixty lawsuits said the former President Trump had lost the election. There were recounts and audits done both before and after that proved the election was not corrupt and Joe Biden had won. The people who attacked the Capitol that day were not the tourists, protesters, the FBI, or Antifa as some members of Congress and others are now saying. They were not anarchists. They were insurrectionists.
We must never forget and forgive about January 6th, the day when a sitting president tried to prevent the peaceful transfer of power which is the bedrock our democracy, the day that President Lincoln warned us against. /s/ Rick Bova North San Diego County

Shortly after she started working, I noticed she was beginning to show her age. I usually get home from the golf club about the same time she gets home from work. Although she knows how hungry I am, she almost always says she has to rest for half an hour or so before she starts dinner. I don't yell at her. Instead, I tell her to take her time and just wake me when she gets dinner on the table. I generally have lunch in the Men's Grill at the club, so eating out is not reasonable. I'm ready for some home-cooked grub when I hit that door. She used to do the dishes as soon as we finished eating. I do what I can by diplomatically reminding her several times each evening that they won't clean themselves. I know she really appreciates this, as it does seem to motivate her to get them done before she goes to bed.
Another symptom of aging is complaining I think; for example, she will say that it is difficult for her to find time to pay the monthly bills during her lunch hour. But, Boys, we take 'em for better or worse, so I just smile and offer encouragement. I tell her to stretch it out over two, or even three days. That way, she won't have to rush so much. and then wouldn't hurt her any (if you know what I mean). I like to think tact is one of my strong points. When doing simple jobs, she seems to think she needs more rest periods. She had to take a break when she was only half-finished mowing the lawn . I try not to make a scene. I'm a fair man. I tell her to fix herself a nice, big, cold glass of freshly squeezed lemonade and just sit for a while. And, as long as she is making one for herself, she may as well make one for me, too. I know that I probably look like a saint in the way I support my wife. I'm not saying that showing this much consideration is easy. Many men will find it difficult. Some will find it impossible! Nobody knows better than I do how frustrating women get as they get older. However, Guys, even if you just use a little more tact and less criticism of your aging wife because of this article, I will consider that writing it was well worthwhile. After all, we are put on this earth to help each other.
EDITOR'S NOTE: The husband, died suddenly on January 31 of a perforated rectum. The police report says he was found with a Calloway extra-long 48-inch Big Bertha Driver II golf club jammed up his rear end, with barely 5 inches of grip showing, and a sledge hammer laying nearby. His wife was arrested and charged with murder. The all-woman jury took only 10 minutes to find her Not Guilty, accepting her defense that her husband somehow without looking, accidentally sat down on his golf

The great war- Windows PCs vs. Apple PCs
Apple and Microsoft are America’s most valuable companies (stock valued at $250 billion). Both Microsoft and Apple are diversified technology companies. Microsoft provides Windows, the operating system for 90% of the world’s PCs (personal computers); Apple provides the PCs and operating system for the remaining 10%. 90% of Windows PCs are sold by Lenovo, HP, Dell, Acer and ASUS. Although both companies are acknowledged founders of the PC revolution that began in the 1970s, PC operating systems and PC hardware are only small vestigial parts of both companies business today. This column is about the over 40 years of rivalry between Apple and Microsoft based PCs.. Today Apple is fourth in American PC sales behind Windows PC sellers
Page 12 • • November 11, 2021
Lenovo, HP and Dell. Apple PCs comprise less than ten percent of Worldwide PC sales, yet Apple makes 50% of the worldwide PC profits. Apple, Dell, HP and Lenovo source from the same components manufacturers and use the same third party manufacturers to design and build their computers. How is it that Apple can sell its PCs for two or three times the price of similarly constructed Windows PCs. Why are Apple users willing to pay so much more for PCs than Windows users? It’s an interesting story.
Apple Computer was the leading manufacturer of personal computer in the late 1970s and early 80s. In late 1981 IBM announced the release of the IBM PC powered by Microsoft’s DOS (Disc Operating System). Initially Apple and Microsoft underestimated the IBM PC’s impact on the world-wide PC revolution. In Mid-1983 Bill Gates, in a televised interview, lauded Apples impending release of the Macintosh and predicted that half of Microsoft’s future revenues would come from Macintosh software support. Gates could not have been more wrong. The revolution was already underway and it belonged to the Windows PC not Apple. As the prospect for the success of the Macintosh began to dim, Steve Jobs concocted a brilliant countermeasure that would define the way Apple PC users viewed themselves for the next half century. Whether it was pure genius or serendipity, Apples 1984 video is still regarded as an advertising classic. In January of 1984 during a third quarter commercial break at
The Appraiser’s Corner The Compass By Jeff Figler
I have always been really bad at finding my way from one place to another. I mean, I am really bad. My wife will ask me how to get from one city to another, and then accuse me of holding the map upside down. Of course, she is just trying to get back at me for some reason. Of course, right? But I’ve been told that there are others who are poor at finding their way. I sure would not want to be the only one who is bad at directions.
You can even give me a compass and that has helped a little. I can tell if I am going S, N, E, or W, or somewhere in-between.
But to think that many generations of people relied on compasses is really amazing to me. Yet it’s true.
Actually, the first compass was invented in, you guessed it, China, during the Han Dynasty about 2000 years ago. The Chinese used the compass to help them towards a life of balance with the earth. Later it was used in military and maritime navigation. In the 1300s the dry compass was invented and in the early 1900s, the magnetic com-
pass was introduced. Compasses offer direction for travelers, and being a navigational tool, indicates to travelers the direction they are heading.
The man credited with inventing the modern compass is William Sturgeon, which occurred after he discovered electromagnet. After his discovery. Sturgeon realized what power the compass had. It is due to electromagnetism that the modern compass was created. Modern travelers should be grateful.
The inner dial of the compass taps into the magnetic frequencies from the earth, and points in the direction in which a traveler is going.
Honestly, science was never my favorite subject. But if that’s how compasses work, then I’m fine. In reality, compasses have saved many lives of travelers, especially ones who have lost their way. So we all owe a debt of gratitude to William Sturgeon. Of course, others, such as Edmund Halley, Hans Orsted, Michael Faraday, and others, paved the way for Sturgeon. Of course, since the compass has such a long history, there are vintage compasses that are auctioned from time to time, and
the Super Bowl, Apple aired the Macintosh commercial “1984." It is impossible to describe or explain the impact the commercial had on people (1984 Apple video). For present and future Apple users it hinted at images youth, vigor, superiority and elite status. Using visual images from George Orwell’s dystopian novel “1984” it characterized Windows PC users as brainless zombies hypnotized by the screen image and voice of “big brother” and marching in utter conformity to nowhere. Although Apples volatile founder Steve Jobs was forced out of Apple in late 1985, that “1984 video” set the tone for his return 12 years later. By the time Apple’s board of Directors brought him back in 1997, Apple was on the brink of bankruptcy. With Jobs return, Bill Gates (Microsoft) invested $150 Million giving Apple the breathing room needed for Jobs to restructure the company and its products. IPods, iPhones and iPads replaced computers as Apples mainstay product. In 2007 Jobs deleted “Computer” from the corporate identity. “Apple Computer Inc” became “Apple Inc” and Steve Jobs famously announced the arrival of the “post PC era.” The images of “1984” echo today in
the attitudes of Apple PC users who consider themselves a cut above the 90% of Windows PC users. There are certainly good vocational reasons why some users prefer Apple applications, particularly in the graphics arts. Many retired teachers are Apple loyalists simply because Apples are the only PC they ever knew. Like most minority groups, Apple users are more prone to compare and be defensive of their “identity group.” Windows PC users, secure in their majority group status, rarely think about comparisons or the necessity to defend their “identity group.” Like other “identity group” conflicts, the Windows vs. Apple spat is largely emotion rather than logic based. Apple boosters point to higher income and education levels. Apple’s demographics are favorably skewed among educators, non-binaries, democrats and artists. Business owners, engineers, and republicans prefer Windows PCs. Windows folks characterize Apple PC users as pretentious and arrogant. Apple PC fans regard Windows PC users as uninformed, unsophisticated and pedestrian. Perhaps the Windows vs. Apple schism is just another indication of how divided we’ve become over stupid stuff.

A brass circumferenter lock from the late 18th century was auctioned for $16,000 at a Freeman’s auction. It was very ornate, with leaf borders, and a dome glass cover and brass dust cover. It came with the original mahogany, ebony and sycamore box. As with other vintage collectibles, the more ornate and preserved, the more valuable the item. A compass is no exception.
Simply put, most items are not made as well as ones from the past. As for compasses, and even maps, I think I took a class in college on map reading. I should probably have paid more attention to the professor.

Dementia Cont. from Page 6
On November 5, 1994 Nancy Reagan’s concerns would prove valid when he was officially diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at the age of 84. The prognosis was cleared stated: “There is no cure.” The former U. S. President scribbled on two sheets of paper a letter to the American people and handed it to Chief of Staff, Fred Ryan stating, “Why don’t we get this typed up and put out.”
The letter would hit the world like a bomb shell. Addressed to “My Fellow Americans,” it said in part: “I have recently been told that I am one of the millions of Americans who will be afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease. I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead.” The letter concluded, “In closing let me thank you, the American people for giving me the great honor of allowing me to serve as your President. When the Lord calls me home, whenever that may be, I will leave with the greatest love for this country of ours and eternal optimism for its future.” (Contents of this letter were faxed to the Reagan Library on November 5, 1994.)
As his memory faded, Reagan’s mind somehow took him back to when he was leader of the Western World. He once got out of bed at 4 a.m. and dressed as if going to work at the Oval Office. Nancy lovingly led him back to his bed. Ever his rock, she serenely spoke to him in quiet tones of their beautiful life together and the unbounded love which tied a bow around it. For Nancy Reagan, her heart would forever be shattered into irreconcilable pieces. The end came on June 5, 2004 when, during his final moments of life, the ex-president looked around him for his wife, Nancy. As Reagan biographer, Bob Spitz, recalls: “With his last breath, he angled his head to one side, opened his eyes wide, wider, until they found Nancy’s face. He looked right at her, then closed his eyes and was gone.”
If we are to honor President Ronald Reagan’s request, as well as his surviving family, then we are bound to share this story of tragedy and learn from it. Alzheimer’s is a menace which needs to be reckoned with and declared war against.
Long before his own diagnosis, Reagan always knew the dangers of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia and the need for public awareness. In 1983, only 2 years after assuming his first term as U. S. President he would officially dedicate the month of November as “National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month.” Little did he know at the time that 11 years later in 1994, after declaring war on this disease he would be diagnosed as having that very disease, himself. Incredibly, his diagnosis came on

November, the very month he declared as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. Let us honor his legacy and his request to continue the fight against Alzheimer’s with wider awareness and education about dementia.
THE NO. 1 FIGHT AGAINST DEMENTIA: PUBLIC AWARENESS & EDUCATION. “According to the Alzheimer’s Association of America, the most important thing about dementiarelated diseases is ‘Public Awareness & Education’ in taking the proper steps for recognition and early treatment. “Since there currently is no known cure for Alzheimer’s, the next best step is prevention or, at the very least, early diagnosis and treatment to try to manage and slow the disease process.” ARE THERE TESTS FOR ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE? A. Yes. B. No.
As in the case with President Ronald Reagan and others, tests quickly determined that he (Reagan) was just entering the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. However, tests are not always that conclusive and can be difficult, as in the case of Robin Williams, who was found to have dementia only after an autopsy was conducted. But, generally speaking, the correct answer is “A” yes. According to the Alzheimer’s Association: “Doctors
can nearly always determine whether you have dementia, and they can often identify whether your dementia is due to Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease can be diagnosed with complete accuracy only after death, when microscopic examination of the brain reveals the characteristic.” (Alzheimer’s official website, https://www.alz.org/alzheimersdementia/diagnosis/medical.) Always check with your family physician and never take chances if you’re in doubt.
This exclusive report to The Paper is in honor of November as “Alzheimer’s (and other dementia) Disease Awareness Month,” Proclamation 5405, enacted by President Ronald Reagan on November 8, 1985, nineteen years before dementia would claim his own life in 2004.
