By Tom Morrow Ask any 10 people you might meet on the street what they think is the definition of “Critical Race Theory” and you’ll probably be met with blank stares. Most people paying attention to what happening in the news these days may have heard of CRT, but only a few can describe what it is (or isn’t). In more than a few regions of the U.S. race relations is edging toward a critical state and it’s no longer a theory. Critical Race Theory is a growing

movement of what some legal experts and liberal activists as well as progressive educators across the nation are seeking to challenge and examine mainstream approaches to racial justice and education. It’s a movement threatening to divide our nation along racial lines. It’s a chasm that has plagued our nation almost constantly since the mid1800s. As the minority populations grows closer to becoming a majority, there are accusations of racism, especially, but not exclusively, toward white people. But here’s the elephant in the room: society in
general is becoming a true genetic melting pot. It isn’t a stretch to the imagination that a half century from now a mixture of white and darkskinned peoples will be the majority here in America. Think not? All one has to do is watch any television commercial any time of day on any channel and you can see obvious displays of color-blind actors representing a society of tomorrow. In reality we’re not at that point yet, but a mixed-race society is fast approaching. Black on white, Asian on white, black, brown, and a variety of more than two will be the

reality of tomorrow. It is cruel for anyone to proclaim to children that all white people are racist because the numbers of mixed-race families are growing every day. Until recent years, accusations of racism hurled at white populations have pretty much been in the larger Eastern half of the nation, but the past two years’ demonstrations causing police violence have spread heretofore to quiet communities, neighborhoods and cities of all size populations located in Midwestern and Western

What the Hell is CRT? Cont. from Page 1 states. Race riots have exploded in middle-American’s seemingly peaceful locales like Kenosha, Wisconsin, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington, and it isn’t always because of police actions and cruelty. All one has to do is look at cities like Chicago where the greatest percentage of murder and other heinous crimes are “black on black” in origin. Such statistics can be found in just about any large black population. Even the numbers of “black on white” crimes are relatively low comparatively speaking. Is that racist? No, that’s reality. A good percentage of these crimes are committed by people who are criminals taking advantage of peaceful and law-abiding black citizens. That doesn’t mean prejudicial customs, business practices and educational curriculums brought about in white majority communities doesn’t exist. Such things exacerbate black suspicions and reactions. To many, crime is critical and not a theory … it’s reality. It’s important to be aware and understand the basics of CRT because upcoming national elections undoubtedly will have it as a key debating point. The recent gubernatorial race in Virginia is an example of how CRT is becoming a controversial focus at all levels of education.

In addition to the pandemic controversy of whether students should wear masks, or even be in attendance, there’s something about this apparent academic civil rights movement across the nation that has educators, elected school officials and their progressive activists pitted against millions of moderate and/or conservative parents of all colors. Parents are challenging school boards and administrators yelling and screaming, creating violence in public meetings. Passion about how their children are being educated have ended in jail. Parents of all races and ethnic groups are demanding to know what educators are up to and what is included in present-day school curriculums. They, indeed, do have the right to know what is being taught. Most parents, especially white, understandably take exception when they and their children are told they’re automatically “racist” in nature because of the color of their skin. They are concerned when such attitudes are in danger of being taught to their students. Most people of color agree, to some extent, such viewpoints have a certain amount of truth. Still, painting the situation with one big, wide brush can lead to unintended prejudice. Children mirror the attitudes of their parents and quite often these attitudes and beliefs clash with what they are being taught at all levels of

By Sean Dietrih “Happy Thanksgiving, Daddy,” said little Robert, pouncing on his father’s bed at four in the morning. “Yep,” replied his tired father, who was nearly comatose from sleep. The year was 1939. Robert’s father staggered out of bed and stretched his lanky body. It was still dark outside. The Michigan air was liquid ice. Robert’s family got dressed while the coffee perked on the potbelly stove. “Are you excited to eat turkey, Daddy?” Robert asked.
Robert’s father was an ironworker, and a man of sparse words. He was the sort of man who returned home each evening varnished in sweat and exhaustion. Robert’s mother was a commercial seamstress in a factory. Somehow the couple found time to raise four kids. There was a Depression on. They lived in a meager house. They weren’t poor by any means—there were plenty of families worse off. But they weren’t high-steppers, either. That morning, Robert’s father donned his nicest Sunday clothes—

Turkey Talk: Valley Center Carved Its Place In History - For a period of about 20 years starting in the early 1940's, if a family gathered for Thanksgiving dinner, chances are the turkey they enjoyed came from Valley Center. And that family could have been in North Carolina, Oregon or Michigan. Mizpah Turkey Ranch on Lilac Road, operated by brothers Steve and James Compas, raised, processed and delivered 200,000 turkeys a year. One freezer could hold 40,000 pounds of turkey. According to documentation at the Valley Center Historical Society, it was claimed to be the largest turkey farm in the country. To highlight the Mizpah's place in history, the Valley Center History Museum has set up a Thanksgiving exhibit featuring an original plastic

education. Students often rebel at such proclamations. While a number of colleges and universities admit CRT is being studied in their respective institutions, most public schools maintain that isn’t the case in their classrooms. But a growing movement among parents are challenging that assertion because CRT philosophy is creeping into curriculums. Civil rights activists, liberal educators and their organizations along with a growing number of “progressive” members of Congress insist they know best about what should be taught to public school students at all age groups. Telling parents they shouldn’t be concerned or not have any input about what’s being taught to their children is a recipe for disaster. The recent Virginia gubernatorial election could be a bellwether of election challenges to come in the next two national elections. When it comes to parental rights regarding their children’s education, such liberal attitudes on the part of educators and elected school boards are like striking a match to a powder keg. When it comes to public education, which taxpayers pay for, it boils down to this: most people, regardless of race, creed, or color, want their children to learn the basics of education … to read, to write, to communicate both in speech and in writing, to under-
The turkey story starts in the 1930's when the Compas brothers began acquiring parcels of land along Lilac Road. Their turkey empire eventually reached 2,189 acres including a secondary farm on Lake Wohlford Road. The mammoth operation consisted of hatcheries, brooders, a feed mill, processing plant, and freezers. Off Lilac Road, a 2.5-acre lake was created that attracted ducks, geese and aquatic birds of all kind. Today, the lake is the centerpiece of a mobile home park called HideAway Lake, a development of 135 homes. Some of the original buildings were converted into retail space that operates as Harvest Farms Village. So highly respected was the Compas and Mizpah names, that retailers regularly featured the names in the ads. A November 1858 issue of La Jolla Village News for Henry's Meats advertises, "world famous Mizpah Rancho turkeys." The names were also regularly seen in grocery ads across the country.

plus how to understand and respect each other … and be able to locate their hometown and state on a map. Regrettably, geography is a subject many public schools have all but eliminated.
For example take California history. The explanation of how our state entered the U.S. can differ from classrooms in San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco Redding, Fresno, or Bakersfield.
There are many “societies” in America. The basics of education in the New England states does not necessarily mesh with those in the Deep South.
Was white-skinned John Fremont a racist because he defeated the brown-skinned soldiers to conquer what was then a Mexican state, or was he being a good leader following the orders of his president, who was a white man? Was President Franklin D. Roosevelt a racist because he interned thousands of Japanese-Americans during World War II? There, indeed, are valid arguments on both sides of that particular question. How deep into young minds should educators penetrate before parental rights are being infringed upon? Whose “basics” of education are correct? There is “right” and “wrong” on both sides of these questions. Being labeled a “racist” just because of the color of one’s skin is a form of prejudice in itself. Parents in all American societies in all size of populations and age groups, color and educational backgrounds agree on one thing: they want their kids to be able to read, write, do basic mathematics, know the primary points of citizenship,
Most parents living in a Western state society have little knowledge about lunch-counter sit ins, let alone what a lunch counter is or where they were located. Watching old news reels of Alabama police and state troopers beating and hosing down black civil rights demonstrators are ancient history they’ve never experienced and cannot relate. Some young people questioned whether it actually happened. Still other young and middle-aged people learned of such things from grandparents who lived through those times. Stories are told in varying degrees of truth depending upon who is telling the story. A great deal of traditionally rural Midwesterners do not understand how anyone could challenge educators about what is right or wrong with their school’s curriculum. Afterall, educators are supposed to be trained and able to teach the basics as they, themselves, were

ESCONDIDO STABBING RESULTING IN FATALITY On November 9, at 9:28 p.m., Escondido Police and Fire Dispatch received a 9-1-1 call of a stabbing that occurred in the 1300 block of Magnolia Avenue in the City of Escondido. When officers arrived, Juan Reynoso, a 33-year-old Escondido resident, was located with a stab wound to his chest. Escondido Fire Paramedics transported him to Palomar Medical Center where he later succumbed to his injuries. Detectives from the Escondido Police Department responded to the scene for further investigation. Based on witness statements and evidence located at the scene, Juan Reynoso was looking for a family member who he believed lived somewhere in the area. He knocked on a random door to see if the family member was inside of the house. The occupant of the residence answered the door and spoke with Reynoso. Reynoso appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and was acting disorderly in the front yard. A fistfight ensued. Luis Ledesma, a 21-year-old Escondido resident, saw his brother in a fight with an unknown person. Ledesma retrieved a knife, went outside, and stabbed Reynoso in the chest. Audit and any other committee assignments and, essentially, loses any power he may have had as a board member. The board will likely appoint a new board member by mid December to replace former Director Engel but Director Clark will likely have to face re-election in 2022 and, having been sanctioned, that is a major uphill battle for him. Chances are strong he would be defeated if he chose to run. The Paper will not support him. One of the major problems facing the Palomar Medical Board is that the law requires candidates be elected by district. That poses two major problems. How many potential candidates live in any given district that have the talent and skills to serve as a director? Then, once identified, how many of those candidates, if any, are interested or can be persuaded to run for office? If no qualified, skilled and talented nominee can be identified and motivated to run for office then the upshot is the board is likely to attract only mediocre candidates or candidates who have selfinterest motives. Not good for the largest health district in the state of California. An added problem is the electorate does not seem to know or care much about the Palomar Health District service area and its governance. As a consequence voters seldom know who they are voting for and will often elect someone with a medical background or training but no talent or skills at governance. Or, worse, with a political axe to grind . . or self interest. None of these problems bode well for the hospital district. Fortunately, we have a strong president and CEO, Diane Hansen, to help guide the hospital(s).

What the Hell is CRT? Continued from Page 3 taught. Rural people, mostly white, were raised by their parents to understand what they learn in school is correct and proper … few questions are asked, but that attitude is changing as the children of those country folks go off to college and return having been exposed to differing thought and philosophy. A great number of CRT activists and educators point to yesterday’s so-called “Jim Crow” laws, which began in 1877. Thankfully, the greater percent of today’s American population has neither lived nor experienced those outright prejudicial norms. Most of us who remember designated section of a public bus or train, drinking fountains, hotels, restaurants and other public gathering places, primarily in southern states. Today such insults are an ugly reminder of our nation’s past. Those white supremacy “laws” no longer exist out in the open, at least. Up until recent years those traditions were observed and commonly accepted in the U.S. by the white majority throughout most of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Today, such traditions continue to linger in the minds of some people who simply will not let such prejudices be history instead of reality. According to some studies CRT reportedly examines social, cultural, and legal issues primarily as they relate to race and racism in the U.S. Liberal thinkers maintain Conservatives are mostly white and prejudiced against all others; Conservatives think all Liberals are Socialists, or even Communists. None of these viewpoints are all true. Truth be told when the viewpoints on both sides of the issue are weighed there is no vast rightwing” conspiracy, nor are Liberals trying to destroy the country. The answer is somewhere in between. CRT scholars view race and white supremacy as an intersectional social construct that advances the interests of white people at the expense of persons of color. In the field of legal studies, CRT emphasizes that formally color-blind laws still can have racially discriminatory outcomes. Academic critics of CRT argue that many of today’s school curriculums rely on social constructionism, elevates storytelling over evidence and reason, rejects the concepts of truth and merit, and opposes Liberalism. Conservative voices question storytelling over accepted text books, in particular history, social studies and a growing degree of American civics. It’s a battle between the greater majority of parents versus teachers, administrators, and elected officials. Since 2020, conservative state and Congressional lawmakers have sought to ban or restrict CRT instruction along with other anti racism programs. Liberal critics of these legislative efforts say the lawmakers have poorly defined or mis-
Page 5 • • November 18, 2021
represented the importance of CRT and that the goal of the laws is to broadly silence discussions of racism, equality, social justice, and the history of race. The problem grows as the nation’s population grows. White numbers are declining and populations of color and ethnic groups swell. Projection show that the white majority will shrink to a minority position about 50 years from now. The use of narrative (storytelling) by professors, instructors and teachers to illuminate and explore their personally lived experiences of racial oppression has increased in schools and universities. Research in the U.S. Department of State and Department of Justice found U.S. government support for civil-rights legislation "… was motivated in part by the concern that racial discrimination harmed the United States' foreign relations.” The examination of race, sex, class, national origin, and sexual orientation, and how their combination plays out in various settings, such as the needs of a Latina (female) being different from those of a black male and who’s needs are the ones promoted. Important questions pop up. Is black society one, or many, communities? Do middle and workingclass African-Americans have different interests and needs? Do all oppressed peoples have something in common? It’s a study of the ways oppressed groups may share in their oppression but also have different needs and values that need to be studied differently. As of 2002, more than 20 American law schools and at least three nonAmerican law schools offered CRT courses or classes covering the issue. In addition to law, CRT is taught and applied in the fields of education, political science, women's studies, ethnic studies, communication, sociology, and American studies. While elementary, high school and some community colleges maintain CRT is not being taught, universities are increasing their CRT class offerings. A variety of spin-off movements have been developed that apply CRT to specific ethnic groups. These include Latino and Asiancritical movements. More recently, CRT is being taught internationally, including the United Kingdom and Australia … nations with significant populations with people of color. In the middle of the CRT debate another word has risen in popularity among progressive liberals: “Woke.” Woke is a term originating in the U.S. that means to be alert to racial prejudice and discrimination. Beginning in the 2010s, The definition of woke came to encompass a broader awareness of social inequalities such as sexism, and also has been used as shorthand for left-wing ideas involving identity politics and social justice, such as
the notion of white privilege and slavery reparations for African Americans. The phrase “stay woke” has emerged among the black race which refers to awareness of the social and political issues affecting their society. Following the 2014 shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, the phrase “stay woke” was popularized by Black Lives Matter (BLM) activists seeking to raise awareness about police brutality and shootings of African-Americans. Mainly associated with the millennial generation, the term has spread internationally and in 2017, was added to the Oxford English Dictionary. The terms “woke capitalism” and “woke-washing” were coined to describe companies who signaled support for progressive causes as a substitute for genuine reform. By 2020, parts of the political center and right wing in several Western countries were using the term “woke” often in an ironic way … as an insult for various leftist movements and ideologies perceived as over-zealous or insincere. In turn, some left-wing activists have come to consider it an offensive term used to denigrate those campaigning against discrimination. Some CRT scholars have concluded that it is a fallacy believing one can change a narrative by offering an alternative narrative in hopes the listener's empathy will quickly and reliably take over. Empathy is not enough to change racism as most people are not exposed to many who are different from themselves and people mostly seek out information about their own culture and group. Most farmers and ranchers never have contact with black people. Most Americans shopping in grocery markets have no concept of the ordeals being lived by Latino farm workers who pick the fruit and vegetables. A good percentage of oriental peoples tend to congregate and live in their own respective communities, seldom settling in white, black or any other ethnic neighborhoods. Critical Race Theorists have argued in favor of affirmative action. They propose so-called merit standards for hiring and educational admissions are not race-neutral and that such standards are part of the rhetoric of neutrality through which whites justify their disproportionate share of resources and social benefits. Liberals also argue there is a difference between criticizing an unfair system and criticizing individuals who perform well inside that system. An example of an instrumentalist approach to CRT is attorney Johnnie Cochran's defense in the O. J. Simpson murder case. Cochran urged the jury to acquit Simpson in spite of the evidence against him … a form of jury nullification as payback for the United States' racist past. Most blacks smiled at the verdict. White people shook their heads in disbelief. In the run-up to and aftermath of the
2020 U.S. presidential election, opposition to CRT was adopted as a campaign theme by Donald Trump and various conservative commentators on right-wing leaning radio and television. In September 2020, after seeing a commentary on Fox News in which conservative activist Christopher Rufo denounced CRT, President Trump issued an executive order directing agencies of the Federal government to cancel funding for programs mentioning "white privilege" or "Critical Race Theory," on the basis it constituted "… divisive, un-American propaganda" and that it was "racist.” Rufo's use of the term propelled the controversy into the mainstream; he wrote on Twitter, "The goal is to have the public read something crazy in the newspaper and immediately think it’s 'Critical Race Theory.’ ” There is a growing battle that could go either way during next year’s mid-term elections. Cases in point: In a Sept. 17, 2020 speech, President Trump denounced CRT and announced the formation of the 1776 Commission to promote "patriotic education." On Jan. 20, 2021, (inauguration day), President Joe Biden rescinded Trump's order and dissolved the 1776 Commission. Opposition to CRT was subsequently adopted as a major theme by several Conservative think tanks and pressure groups, including the Heritage Foundation, the Idaho Freedom Foundation and the American Legislative Exchange Council. In early 2021, bills were introduced in a number of Republican-controlled state legislatures to restrict teaching CRT in public schools, including Idaho, Iowa, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Several of these bills specifically mention "Critical Race Theory." In midApril of 2021, a bill was introduced in the Idaho legislature that would effectively ban any educational entity (including school districts, public charter schools, and public institutions of higher education) in the state from teaching or advocating "sectarianism,” including CRT or other programs involving social justice. On June 10, 2021, the Florida State Board of Education unanimously voted to ban public schools from teaching CRT. As of July, some 10 U.S. states have introduced bills or taken other steps that would restrict teaching CRT, and 26 others were in the process of doing the same thing The battle lines are being formed. Last June, the American Association of University Professors, the American Historical Association, the Association of American Colleges and Universities, and PEN America released a joint statement stating their opposition to such conservative legislation, and by August, 167 professional organizations had signed onto the statement.

setting bad examples of disrespecting our country's flag & national anthem. Today, kids are ashamed of (publicly) showing love & respect for their parents & older generations.
Within CRT, various sub-groupings have focused on issues and nuances unique to a particular ethno-racial and/or marginalized community. This can include issues that relate to the intersection of race with disability, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, religion and other social structures.
Then (of all places ) we saw your ex-wife Mary and Friedrich Gomez at McDonald's, bridging the generation gap with love, joy, and unrestrained respect! We all sat quiet. With tears in our eyes. Just watching America, as it SHOULD BE. We didn't dare interrupt them, though we were so tempted to thank them for renewing our hope in our country's future! Mr. Davis, your ex-wife was having so much fun laughing and conversing and even singing that we had ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA she had dementia -- ON ANY LEVELl! She and Friedrich set such a beautiful & powerful example for our two teenage girls (age 14 and 17). On the drive home they both told us how much they love Friedrich. "I think he's so cool with his long hair," they told us! And my husband and I looked at each other with tears in our eyes! I pray to God our girls can inherit a safer, better, and more Honorable America, and you know what Mr. Davis? Your ex-wife Mary and your brilliant writer Friedrich Gomez were living proof in SHOWING US THAT HOPE! Please, please thank Friedrich Gomez for being such a precious Caregiver. We had no idea he was even a CAREGIVER! Does he do this for others? Our two girls now want to be Caregivers for older people in need! And speaking of Caregivers, Mr. Davis please do something special for Friedrich because this month is "NATIONAL CAREGIVERS MONTH." And from what we witnessed, Friedrich HAS to be the best example for any Caregiver! God bless him! And bless your ex-wife, Mary!
While CRT focuses on the Black– White question, Latino CRT has moved to consider other racial groups, mainly Latinos, Asians, Native Americans, First Nations, and women of color. The CRT question in education is not going away. Throughout the nation, great debates are going on, particularly among parents of public school-age children. The primary target of the anger and wrath are local school boards. Here in the U.S., school boards are the first-line of democracy … even more so than a city council. If you don’t like the direction your local educational system is going, or what’s being taught in the classroom, vote out those responsible: the board of education … they are responsible for hiring the school administrators, who, in turn, hire the teachers who largely are responsible for designing the curriculum. It doesn’t have to be a difficult problem. The local educational solution can be that simple: elect a school board reflecting the desires and philosophy of their constituents. That won’t end the question of CRT in education, but it will put it out on the table for a better understanding of all concerned … or, maybe not

Supporting Our Veterans Last Thursday was Veterans Day, or Armistice Day to an older generation, originally commemorating the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month when the guns fell silent in World War One. It’s a day we set aside to honor our veterans, with speeches and parades. But we need to do more. Going forward, we should provide tangible support for veterans and their families, and a big step here in California would be to stop taxing veterans’ retirement pay. California is one of just three states, plus the District of Columbia, that fully tax veterans’ retirement pay. Why do we do this? Do we really need this revenue? Apparently, most of the rest of the nation gets along just fine without it. Last year Senate Bill 1071, would have repealed the tax on veterans’ retirement pay. Unfortunately, session was shortened due to the pandemic and the bill never came up for a vote. Over the years and for various reasons, previous attempts to repeal the tax have also failed. This Veterans Day there were ceremonies and commemorations throughout the region, and our office was very proud to take part in the annual ceremonies in Escondido, Fallbrook, Temecula
Our veterans have never failed us, and we should not fail them. The men and women who have worn the uniform, often at great risk and sacrifice, as well as their families who have shared in that sacrifice, deserve more than just our gratitude. Eliminating this unnecessary tax burden would be a big step forward for California’s veterans, and it’s one we should take.
Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

San Diego County and the State of California have spent hundreds of millions of dollars helping those who are experiencing homelessness. However, we continue to see the problem expand with no visible results. In fact, it seems more widespread and worse. So, what can we do?

I believe that the majority of those who are experiencing homelessness struggle with substance abuse. As a society, we have gone from one extreme – the war on drugs, by incarcerating anyone using or selling drugs- to the other extreme of allowing people to abuse drugs on our sidewalks. Many people are fed up with this situation, as it’s impacting their businesses, recreation areas, freeway onramps and overpasses, and the blight from the incredible amount of garbage that is produced by encampments. I don’t blame them! A lot has been made about the “Housing First” model which promotes putting those on the street into free housing, but this allows them to continue their drug and alcohol abuse. Shelters and free
housing should not be a revolving door. We must have accountability, with treatment and incentives, to get people out of the addiction cycle. San Diego County needs to be willing to enforce removing people out of encampments and into treatment. It’s simply inhumane to allow people to live like this on the streets. As a society – we can do better. Some may say it’s inhumane to force people off the streets and into treatment, but I think it’s more inhumane to keep people on the streets. To contact

PROBLEM SOLVED BY CHRISTOPHER ELLIOTT Q: My wife and I have been trying to get a refund from Scenic River Cruises for more than eight months. We paid $14,910 for a Danube River cruise from Bucharest to Budapest scheduled for May 2020. That included airfare and an upgrade. We also bought a travel insurance policy. Scenic River Cruises canceled the cruise in early May of 2020. We received an option via email for a cruise credit or refund from Member Travel Privileges, our travel agency. We have this email. In a follow-up email, our travel agent advised us we would receive a refund of $13,338 for the cruise and an additional $1,572 travel credit. However, they also advised that the refund may take up to 90 days. After 90 days, we filed a claim with our insurance company. Our claim was denied. The reason for the denial was that COVID-19 was not a covered reason for cancellation. Since then, we have gone back and forth with Scenic Cruises in our efforts to get a refund. We get cut off each time we call. In one of the emails from Scenic Cruises, they wrote that we would have to work with the booking agent. We would like to get the promised refund. Can you help? -- Winston Bateman, Roseville, Minn. A: So much went wrong with your cruise, it's hard to know where to begin. But maybe we should start here: If your travel agent promised you a refund, you should get one. Period. But there were other unfortunate circumstances, and I'm not just talking about COVID. You booked a trip with a reputable cruise line and took out a travel insurance policy. When a travel company cancels a tour, a cruise -- really, anything -- it should offer either a full refund or a credit. Your travel agent said you could get a credit or refund. You chose the refund. But when the money wasn't forthcoming, you filed a travel insurance claim.

BY CHRISTOPHER ELLIOTT Q: Grand Circle has canceled my tour from Paris to Normandy two times. I've contacted the company by phone, email and U.S. mail, asking for a refund. They have not helped me in any way. My only option is to book a new tour with the credit. I want a full refund of the $5,824 I spent. Can you help me? -- Ernest Belzil, Mesa, Ariz. A: You chose the right tour but at the wrong time. Europe was iffy for American visitors during the early part of the pandemic, which is probably why Grand Circle had to cancel your tour twice. That's completely outside the control of the tour operator. Your right to a refund is buried deep in the terms and conditions of < a href="https://www.gct.com/home/t ermsan">Grand Circle's terms and conditions, its contract with you.
Historically Speaking by Tom Morrow
An Iconic Time For Roadside Education If the name “Burma Shave” has little or no meaning to you, then read on for a quick “roadside” history lesson in advertising that was popular to motorists of the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and early 60s. If you know about the signs, you’ll enjoy some pleasant memories. If you don’t remember, then here’s a fun look back at an iconic period of Americana. It was a time when the highways had one lane going each way at a speed limit that was, hopefully, “reasonable and prudent.”
"Any applicable refunds will be returned to you in a manner to be determined by the company, including, but not limited to, credit for future travel," it says. Did you get that last part? Grand Circle says it can give you credit if it wants, rather than a refund. But wait! Are those the terms to which you originally agreed? I checked the terms from early 2020, before the pandemic, and that last line about applicable refunds being returned to you in a manner determined by the company wasn't there. Companies like Grand Circle have argued that you are also agreeing to the new terms and conditions by accepting a credit for a future tour. And that means they can essentially continue to offer credit until you finally take a trip or give up. I'm not sure if I agree with that.
You kept a great paper trail between yourself, your travel agent, and Scenic River Cruises. You could have also escalated your complaint to a company executive. I publish the names, numbers and email addresses of the Scenic River Cruises executives on my nonprofit consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org.
You could have found the Grand Circle executive contacts on my nonprofit consumer advocacy organization's website. You might have tried reaching out to one of them to get this resolved. You kept a good paper trail, but you went overboard with my advice to keep things brief. Feel free to describe the steps you've taken to retrieve a refund, rather than simply asking for your money back.

travel, drawing the attention of passing motorists who were curious to learn the punchline. As the modern Interstate system expanded in the late 1950s and vehicle speeds increased, it became more difficult to attract motorists' attention with the small signs. When the company was acquired by Philip Morris, the signs were discontinued on advice of the company’s legal counsel. Some of the signs throughout the series featured safety messages about speeding instead of clever advertising sayings. Today, examples of Burma-Shave signs are at The House on the Rock in Spring Green, Wisconsin. Recreations of Burma-Shave signs also appear on Arizona’s portion of the old U.S. Highway 66, between Ash Fork, and Kingman, as well as along old U.S. Highway 30 near Ogden, Iowa. Other examples are displayed at The Henry Ford museum in Dearborn, Michigan, a rest area along Interstate 44 in Missouri between Rolla and Springfield, the Forney Transportation Museum in Denver, and the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke. Previously there were only two to four sets of signs per year. 1930 saw major growth in the company, and 19 sets of signs were produced. The writers recycled a previous joke. They continued to ridicule the "old" style of shaving. And they began to appeal to the wives as well:
Grand Circle reserves the right to cancel or shorten a trip or cruise "without notice." When it does, your sole remedy will be a prorated refund for any unused portion of the trip or cruise, calculated under the company’s typical business practices.
I would have contacted your travel insurance company as soon as your cruise line canceled your trip. Ask if you are covered at that point. You probably aren't, since most travel insurance assumes you'll receive a full refund if your cruise line cancels. But it's worth asking.

A loyal reader recently reminded me of those days during the dark days of the Great Depression when U.S. highways across America had educational ditties tinged with entertainment slogans along the way. Drivers and their passengers were cleverly greeted by strings of roadside signs sponsored by Burma Shave, a popular men’s shaving lather product of that era. The Burma-Shave sign-series first appeared along U.S. Highway 65 near Lakeville, Minnesota, in 1926, and remained a major roadside advertising component until 1963 throughout most of the United States. In the early days before the Great Depression, the southwestern states of New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada were not included because they were thought to have insufficient road traffic. Many highways in those states weren’t even paved. Massachusetts was eliminated from the program due to that state's highcost land rentals and thick roadside foliage. Typically, consecutive small poetic signs would be posted along the edge of highways, spaced for sequential reading by passing motorists. The last sign was almost always the name of “Burma Shave.” This use of a series of small signs, each of which bore part of a commercial message, was a successful approach to highway advertising during the early years of highway
DOES YOUR HUSBAND MISBEHAVE, GRUNT AND GAMBLE RANT AND RAVE? SHOOT THE BRUT SOME BURMA SHAVE In 1931, the Burma Shave writers began to reveal a "cringe" side to their creativity, which would increase over time: By 1932, the company recognized the popularity of the signs with a self-referencing gimmick. Here are more examples of those popular, poetic roadside signs of yesterday. DON'T STICK YOUR ELBOW OUT SO FAR IT MAY GO HOME IN ANOTHER CAR. A New Reader . . and Fan!
Gotta tell ya, right off the bat -- I've grown to rather enjoy your weekly news magazine. Ever since my friends told me about it, well, I gotta admit I now look forward to Thursdays to peek at your cover stories! It's like a weekly gift surprise and I never know what new adventure or experience I'm about to journey on!! And you're the only "game in town." By that, I mean every local newspaper doesn't have what you have: an enjoyable, full-length, factual cover story every week! Not fictional pieces on the cover, but really "newsworthy" items to get us thinking, sometimes getting us angry, but for a good reason! You're unpredictable! One week it's history like "Ira Hayes, Arizona's Reluctant Hero," a real beauty by Sam Lowe! Then, it's a serious "wake-up" call, such as "Abraham Lincoln's Warning" about our country "imploding from within" if we don't turn things around and fast! Hell, that's serious s*** right there! That one was by your Young Gun, Friedrich Gomez.
And then The Paper suddenly shifts gears on all of us readers by surprising and shocking all of us with unbelievable (but true) hidden facts and history about our own California!! And damned if you didn't make the learning fun and enjoyable with it being a multiplechoice quiz! Please show me another newsprint that gives us all this variety? You can't.
Mr. Lyle E. Davis, you're quite a magic potion-mixer! You created this here magazine and I'll be snake-bit, tattooed, and powderburned if you haven't caused a countywide "reading addiction" and a "rabid loyal following." Accomplishing proper “self-love” probably means embracing the truth that God loves us in spite of us and our human failures, and sins. (I’ll never figure out why). Only God defines our value. Ultimately His opinion matters most. Sometimes we say something is worth whatever someone is willing to pay. Jesus paid an incredibly high price for me and you. Understanding our worth in God’s eyes helps us love others and help them understand their worth. You and I may find it difficult love ourselves. It might even sound unspiritual or proud. Or maybe, just maybe, it can help us understand how my God loves us in spite of our flaws. Only then can we love others genuinely and share God’s love with everyone.

Our Website Has a New Look!
The City of Vista launched a new city website this week to provide better service to the public. The more modern and user-friendly site offers a clean, smart design, an online service finder, and other accessible features, as well as better mobile viewing. The site’s navigation was updated based on our website traffic patterns and most commonly searched items. The website address will remain the same and users who have bookmarked links for specific webpages will need to update them. Please take a look at the site and send us your comments or if you find something not working at info@cityofvista.com.

Free Turkeys Cont. from Page 3 were the McDavids. Robert went to school with the McDavid kids. Sometimes the McDavid kids didn’t have shoes or winter jackets. When it was the McDavids’ turn in line, the sad-looking family placed their order at the counter for one turkey. The cooked holiday meal came in a paper grocery bag stained with grease splotches. Robert’s mother whispered to his father. “I heard Mister McDavid lost his job.” His father said nothing.
All events will be held at the Events Center, with reduced capacity, increased cleaning, and additional safety measures. Tickets are on sale now, with no service charge, at the Pala Box Office, www.palacasino.com and 1-877-WINPALA
“Heard his wife was taking in wash from rich folks in town.” No reply. “Heard they lost their house.” “Next!” barked the cafeteria lady, an older woman wearing a hairnet and wire glasses. Robert’s father approached the counter and said, “Ten turkeys, please.”
Greetings Escondido,
There is a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding about what is going on regarding SANDAG. As a SANDAG Board member, let me offer some clarity. The two main concerns are how to fund the maintenance of our roads, and how to pay for an improved Public Transportation System. Let’s start with a brief explanation of the Regional Transportation Plan. SANDAG is our Metropolitan Planning Organization and as such is required to submit a RTP. It needs to address the transportation needs of the area going out to 2050. It also needs to consider in the plan how to address state and federal regulations and mandates, for example, reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG) and reduction of Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT). The RTP is scheduled to be voted on this December by the SANDAG Board of Directors. Approving the Plan provides a blueprint for how we reduce congestion and improve air quality over the next three decades. It allows the SANDAG staff to start doing the detailed work necessary to figure out exactly what these solutions look like. The plan also has to have reasonable funding sources. There are dozens of potential revenue sources in this RTP. Next two weeks – Road Maintenance and Public Transportation as it relates to the RTP. Stay informed, Be Kind, Remember your neighbor, and Stay safe! Semper Fi, Mac Paul P. McNamara, Mayor of Escondido, pmcnamara@escondido.org
The woman in the hairnet gave him an incredulous look. “Ten?” He nodded. “What’re you, some kinda wisenheimer or something?” “Ten turkeys,” repeated Robert’s father. “Please.” The woman finally gave in. She shouted to the kitchen. “I need ten birds!” She turned to Robert’s father. “Cranberry sauce with those?” “Yep.” In a few minutes, Robert’s father was navigating the Ford through quiet streets. Ten warm bags sat in the backseat. They drove into the hinterlands, past the grain silos, the clapboard churches, the stubbled cornfields, the abandoned service station, the feed and seed. Finally, they arrived in a rundown place filled with weary houses and dilapidated cars. This rural neighborhood was not

really a neighborhood at all. This place was more akin to a municipal dump than a residential zone. Old shacks with chipped siding stood lined up like a tired platoon. Mildew was the preferred color here. There were kids outside, bundled up, warming hands over fires contained in fifty-gallon drums. There were middle-aged men wearing thick parkas, working under the hoods of iced-over Chevys and Buicks. Robert’s father tugged the parking brake. “Stay here,” he told the family. “This won’t take long.” Through the windshield, Robert could see his father carrying two heavy grocery sacks toward one home. His father approached an old man who stood on a lopsided porch. Robert’s father gave the bag to the old man, then shook his hand vigorously. And the old fella began to weep. Then they embraced. Then

Shopping local
People often tell us that they prefer doing business with small local businesses like us rather than shopping for products and services on the Internet or at the corporate national chain stores. We appreciate being appreciated, especially if it’s for the right reasons. The corporate “big Box” stores serve an important purpose in our national economy and our lives. They buy and transport commodities cheaply and efficiently and they price compete with one another. This keeps consumer prices low and that benefits all of us. They don’t provide experts to advise you on which products work best for your purpose nor will they customize products to meet your specific needs. It’s the customer’s job to know what they need. You probably won’t establish a lasting relationship with the stock boy, the check-out lady or the cart retriever in the park-
However; there are products where users often do need some expert help. Home entertainment and security systems, heating and air conditioning auto repair and maintenance and computers are a few. With these products you need someone to give you reliable information so that you can make good decisions and spend your money wisely. You don’t want to rely on a commissioned sales clerk to tell you what to buy. You want someone local that has been around long enough to establish a reputation for honesty and square dealing. You want a person you can call and ask questions and who will likely be around next year too. You choose a local small business when you need to be certain you are buying exactly what you need and anticipate years of local upgrades and service.
One of the rarest, and collectible, of all baseball items is the press pin. There are many sports collectors who are not even familiar with what a press pin is. Actually, as the words imply, it is a pin given to a member of the press, presumably covering a sporting event. Although most sporting press pins have been associated with World Series and All-Star Games in baseball, there are now press pins associated with Super Bowls, NBA Championships, Stanley Cup Finals, Indianapolis 500 races, and the list is growing. Baseball press pins have existed for a little over 100 years, and have served as badges for members of the media at a major sporting event. Nowadays, the media are given more credentials than a metal pin, even though a press pin is now a commemorative, rather than a required item. But, the roots of the baseball press pins, now truly collectors items, dates back to the early 1910s. The New York Giants manager, John McGraw, had a wide circle of friends who wanted to go to the games for free. McGraw did not want to say no
But most o the time we’re busy solving much less dramatic problems like “it won’t boot to Windows’ or “the video is squirrly” or “the internet won’t connect” or “I’ve been hacked.” These are among the everyday things we deal with. So if you have not yet been in to the Worlds friendliest computer shop, you should stop by and check us out. We’d like to meet you.
Every once in a while we get a genuine “virtue signaler” with a line like “I know I can buy a brand new PC over at Costco for $199 but I really believe in supporting small business so what can you guys do for me, huh?” By the time we quit rolling our eyes he’s usually gone. Here at the Computer Factory we are not in a competition with brick and mortar national chains like Costco, Wal-Mart or Best Buy and we’re not fighting for business with Amazon or New Egg. They have their customers and we have ours. Ours are North

County home, school and business owners who need reliable help finding the best solutions for their specific needs. It might be the repair or upgrade of an existing PC. It could be selecting or customizing refurbished enterprise workstations, notebooks, desktops, micros or All-in-Ones. to any of them. McGraw had passes given to his friends to get into the stadium. They would go to the press box as the working media was on the field interviewing players before the game. When the media would come to the press box area, they would find their seats taken. The solution was that the newlyformed Baseball Writers of America issued speciallydesigned lapel pins which would be required of anyone trying to gain access to the press box area. Since that time, press pins have been produced for nearly every baseball World Series and AllStar Games, and some other major sporting events. Press pins fit the criteria for a collectible. They are very scarce, they are very desirable, and most of them are in good condition. Besides, they are extremely lightweight and easy to move. As an example of how scarce they are, in the early years, no more than a few hundred were given to each World Series team. Even as late as the 1990s, only a few thousand were allotted to each team. Besides the actual press pins that were distributed to World Series teams, there are also vintage press pins known as “phantom” pins. These were press pins that
were made for contending teams that never made it to the World Series. These pins were made just in case the teams did make it to the World Series. They are valuable as well, and sometimes are even worth more than the pins of a World Series team. The press pins of the Philadelphia Athletics from the 1911 World Series were manufactured by the Allen A. Kerr Company, and are worth the most in general, well into the thousands of dollars. That year was the first year press pins were made especially for the World Series. Nowadays, press pins from modern World Series are only worth a couple of hundred dollars even in Mint condition.
Series. For baseball trivia buffs, 1912 was the year that Fenway Park opened in Boston, and the team has been playing there ever since. So baseball collectors; if you haven’t thought of collecting press pins, you might want to think about it now.

However, in a 2012 Heritage auction, a 1922 World Series press pin which served the New York Giants and New York Yankees media, sold for $11,950. The pin was in Mint condition, and of course featured both New York teams. Both teams also played at the Polo Grounds, that year, the sight of all the World Series games. However, in 2013, there was a press pin that sold for nearly $57,000. A World Series press pin from the New York Giants 1912 World Series between the Giants and the Boston Red Sox sold for that incredible amount. It is one of only a few remaining pins from the year’s World

Free Turkeys Cont. from Page 11 Robert’s father wept. Robert could read the elderly man’s lips. “God bless you, sir,” the man was saying. It was a marathon day. Robert’s family delivered several more grocery bags to several more homes. After which the family returned to the high school to pick up even more bags so they could do it all over again. Robert’s father made drop-off after drop-off until nighttime overtook northern Michigan like a down quilt. And when the day was over, the family finally ate their own holiday feast at a small truckstop diner outside of town. The kids stabbed lukewarm turkey and ate box-dressing. Robert’s dad took sips of high-octane coffee and massaged the stiffness from his neck. Robert looked at his father and realized that this man still had to get up for work the next morning. In a scant few hours his old man would crawl on icy iron cross beams, put in his eight hours, and earn his wage. Even after spending his offday playing Samaritan, work was work. It was at this moment that Robert not only understood what an exceptional human being his father was, but decided that someday he wanted to be the same kind of charitable man. When Robert’s father noticed his son gazing at him from across the table, he smiled and tousled Robert’s hair. “Happy Thanksgiving, Robert,” his father said. Robert smiled back. “Yep.”

Letters to the Editor Cont. from Page 10 our Irish eyes be smiling! You're greatly loved, Mate, top to bottom. Lyle E. Davis, founder/creator of The Paper. I am so totally smitten and in love with your writer Friedrich Gomez. I just read he is a caregiver for your ex-wife Mary who you described as a "high-functioning dementia person." We've known Friedrich since his Walmart days as a store cashier and were well-aware of his charitable and humanitarian efforts (he was part of Calvary's Christian outreach program "Food Ministry" for the homeless and poverty families here in Escondido, BUT, we NEVER knew he was devoting his loving, compassionate, and altruistic time as a caregiver!! God bless him, a million times over!! The
more I learn about him, the more deeply in love we all become with him! I've heard, but wasn't certain, that he helped seniors and military veterans in some sort of way. So now, I read in your Nov, 4, 2021 issue of The Paper that he visits and takes your ex-wife who has dementia out for car rides, keeps her company, and they both laugh, sing, and talk with such joy and happiness together at places like McDonald's! All my female friends read, then broke down and openly cried in reading what you said in that issue about Friedrich Gomez and your ex-wife Mary! At Walmart, he used to help out poor families that shopped there -- ALL THE TIME! I wish, no I pray, that we can have more human beings like Friedrich. So humble. So giving of himself. So compassionate. Never complains. And you said you're about to adopt him -- well, I got news for you -- you'll have to stand in line for that honor! A "cat fight" is about to breakout over on my end about adopting him! I am TOTALLY SERIOUS! God bless him. Keep him forever safe, Mr. Davis. Promise. He belongs to all of us Americans. -emailed from Maria ContrerarsHauser, family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers, Escondido/San Marcos, CA.

I contacted Scenic River Cruises on your behalf. It said that its policy after the pandemic was to offer a credit, not a refund. "It seems their agency gave out incorrect information regarding refunds," a spokesman for Scenic River Cruises told me. "If the agency offered a refund, it falls on the agency to make such a refund." I contacted your agency, which reviewed your case. "We sent out a communication to you asking if you preferred a cash refund or a future cruise credit for your canceled booking, only to later find out that Scenic would only be able to offer future cruise credits to its passengers," your agency said in a letter to you. Your agency agreed to issue a full refund of $14,910. That's the total of the refund and credit you were offered in the follow-up email. Giving up a pet: Facing the decision to give up your pet isn’t easy — and San Diego Humane Society is here to help. We have lots of tips and free resources for rehoming your pet, including ways you can find a new family for your pet yourself. Consider using Rehome by Adopt-a-Pet rather than taking them to a shelter. You can create a listing for your pet and be connected with community members looking to adopt!
Spotlight on Spay/Neuter: As part of the program to help community members access veterinary care, they recently provided a veterinary voucher to help with the cost to spay Penelope, a kitten belonging to a young woman who's job ended and has limited resources. In addition to eliminating behaviors associated with going into heat, spay/neuter surgeries can reduce roaming, aggression, spraying and marking. These routine, safe surgical procedures also reduce the risk of cancer, increase lifespans and decrease pet overpopulation!
Vaccine Clinics in North County and S.D. Campus: Our vaccine clinics are open to the public and provide low-cost vaccinations and microchips. Appointments are encouraged and can be made online. Walk-ins during clinic hours are subject to availability and require a $10 walk-in fee.
Free Pet Socialization Training: Socializing a pet involves getting them comfortable with a wide range of animals, people, places and activities. This is ideal to do with young puppies and kittens, but our Well-Socialized Pet Chat can help pets of all ages. We have all kinds of other training classes, but this free 30-minute interactive chat via Zoom is a great place to start.
Community Pet Pantry: TuesdaySunday, 9am-6pm. Our Community Pet Pantry provides free pet food and other supplies to families in need six days a week at our Escondido, and Oceanside campuses.
Finding Pet-Friendly Housing: We recognize the challenges renters face when it comes to finding affordable housing that also accepts pets! That's why we've gathered resources to help renters in their search, including a pet-friendly housing list, frequently asked questions about rights to have assistance (or “support”) animals in rental housing, living outside or in a vehicle with a pet and eviction information.
