Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, San Diego Group IV Field Office and the Escondido Police Department announced today 23 defendants were charged on various narcotics- and firearms-related charges, culminating in the seizure of 113 firearms with most of the guns being privately made firearms, more commonly referred to as “Ghost Guns” following an 18-month investigation. This ATF and Escondido PD proactive investigation
referred to as “Operation Devil’s Den,” targeted the activity of some of the most violent and active gangs operating in and around the city of Escondido to include members of the Diablos, Westside, and Florencia 13 gangs. These targets were convicted felons making firearms to include machine guns (using machine gun conversion devices commonly referred to as “switches” and “drop-in auto sears”) and selling those firearms without a federal firearms license. The investigation resulted in 23 defendants; 113 guns seized including: 71 pistols, six rifles, 14 machine guns, 19 machine gun conversion kits (33 machine guns in total), two shotguns, one silencer; and narcotic seizures of 15.5 pounds of methamphetamine, 115 grams of fentanyl, 20 grams of ecstasy, and 5 grams of cocaine.
The joint investigation involved 38 controlled purchases of firearms and narcotics using undercover agents and police officers, as well as confidential informants. Investigative techniques utilized in this investigation included extensive surveillance, which also yielded key evidence capturing an attempted murder. “This joint investigation is another exemplary illustration of ATF’s commit-

ment to creating safer communities,” said ATF Los Angeles Field Division Special Agent in Charge Monique Villages. “ATF is working nonstop with our local law enforcement partners to disrupt the private manufacturing of firearms and machine gun conversion devices. What ATF saw 10 years ago with the emergence of the ghost gun phenomena, is now what ATF is seeing with the emergence of machine gun conversion kits. The same criminals making and trafficking their own firearms are some of the same criminals trafficking the conversion devices.”
In 2021, ATF seized 1,576 machineguns conversion devices as evidence through the course of its investigations. That was a 438 percent increase from 2020. From Jan. 1, 2016, through Dec. 31, 2021, there were approximately 45,240 suspected privately made firearms reported to ATF nationwide as having been recovered by law enforcement from potential crime scenes. This included firearms associated with 629 homicides or attempted homicides. This number grew from 1,758 pri-

“The Escondido Police Department places a high priority on combating violent crime and keeping our community safe,” said Escondido Police Department’s Interim Chief David Cramer.
“An integral part of that endeavor is the partnerships we maintain with other law enforcement agencies. We are proud of the collaboration with our federal partners to keep dangerous and illegal weapons out of the hands of prohibited persons.”
“With the extensive proliferation of ghost guns, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has redoubled its efforts to prosecute federal crimes involving firearms. The DA’s Office is reporting an uptick in gang-related cases it has filed, from 368 in 2020 to 465 in 2021. In 2021, there were more than 200 shootings that had automatic gunfire.
For decades, fully automatic weapons were expensive, collectable, and rarely used in crimes. Auto sears, which can cost less than $20 online, have changed that.
An auto sear — the most common automatic conversion device — transforms a semiautomatic gun into a weapon capable of emptying an entire magazine with a single pull of the trigger. Also known as switches or chips, auto sears have been around since the ‘70s but are exceedingly tough Machine Guns Cont. on Page 6

Former Escondido City Council Member Olga Diaz Fired by University of Wisconsin - Eu Claire
In a written statement, excerpts of which appear below, Olga said:
“For the record, I did not resign my position as vice chancellor of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Student Affairs at UWEC. I was fired, as an act of retaliation by Chancellor James Schmidt who has failed to address the toxic work environment festering on his campus. I was offered severance to resign in exchange for absolving the university and the chancellor from liability but more importantly from accountability. I refuse to be complicit in what I now recognize to be a dysfunctional, racist environment that undermines the essence of equity, diversity and inclusion work. Instead, I have chosen to speak out.
I assumed my duties on June 14, 2021, and joined a team of professionals dedicated to serving students. It was clear they were exhausted, relationships were strained, and the infrastructure to support an effective team was in disarray. I attributed these conditions to the high turnover in leadership and the fallout of a global pandemic. I prioritized a reorganization that would distribute workload more effectively, reduce duplication of efforts and use limited resources in a fiscally prudent way.
Change is difficult but the public attacks lauded at me personally were alarming. I remained professional — receiving compliments from colleagues about my grace in the face of such vitriol. Diaz went on to say that there were several faculty members who did not like her and attacked her privately and publicly but usually anonymously. She had taken up a civil rights issue concerning a white student and was contrary to the position the University had taken and appeared to anger Chancellor Jame Schmidt, to whom she reported. (Later) he sent out an email that said, in part, ”Olga Diaz has left the university and is no longer serving as Vice Chancellor.” The next morning, two days after refusing to tender my resignation, the LeaderTelegram reported I had left UWEC.
I believe my advocacy to create a truly equitable approach to student services, as well as my support for a white employee subjected to discrimination and harassment in the workplace, led to a targeted campaign by specific faculty and alumni to discredit me. Somewhere in this country is a university chancellor or president looking for a principled administrator with the commitment to do the right thing because it is the right thing to do. I want to work for that person.” - Olga Diaz nor did he intend to run for the Escondido City Council. We had already endorsed him when we first heard he had filed to run. I, perso nally, was disappointed he withdrew from the race . . and was also disappointed he had left Escondido.
Man About Town
I don’t know about you but I’m mighty proud of our Escondido Police Department and the brilliant investigative work they did to confiscate weapons, drugs, and to take a number suspected “bad guys” off the streets.
Escondido Mayor Paul ‘Mac’ MacNamara, expressed similar sentiments: “I think I speak for the city when I say how proud we are of our police department and their diligence and persistence in keeping us and our children safe.” •••• Was delighted to learn that Jeff Epp, former Escondido City Manager and former Escondido City Attorney, now retired, is back in Escondido. He had left for his home state of Wyoming and I had understood he was quite happy there and did not intend on returning to Escondido;
But he’s back.No political plans but in the future? Who knows? •••• Was also delighted to see my worthy competitor and good friend, David Ross, of the Escondido Times Advocate, back meeting with local dignitaries. David, as you’ll recall fractured his left foot and is now in a “boot.” He’s able to walk, but not very far. Fortunately, as a writer, he can remain comfortably seated while he writes the news and feature stories, both of which he does very well. •••• Sad to learn about Olga Diaz losing her job at the University of Wisconsin-Eu Claire, details of which are in the Local News above, but am pleased to have her back home in Escondido. At one time I was one of Olga’s fiercest critics. Then, one day we met for a meal together and I discoverd that (a) she did not have a devil’s horns and tail, and (b) she was actually a rather nice person.
We wound up endorsing her for two of her city council runs, both of which were successful. Olga and I have disagreed on one or two key issues . . but overall, I rated her as one of the more articulate and well
November 03, 2022 Organized Effort to Replace Board of Directors for the Palomar Hospital District
A slate of candidates has been organized, headed by long time Registered Nurse and Current Chair of the Board, Linda Greer, to fill upcoming board seats with new and more reliable candidates.
There has been discontent and grumbling about two of the incumbent board members, Tom Clark and Laurie Tate-Edwards, both within the board itself as well as within the medical community and the public at large. The board has sanctioned Clark for, among other things, refusing to meet with the hospital CEO, Diane Hansen (a requirement of all board members, to meet with the CEO, as needed) and not attending orientation classes which all board members are required to do, and Laurie Tate-Edwards has been criticized as being a board member who is an obstructionist and is more interested in having the spotlight shine on her rather than getting the board’s work done in an efficient, professional manner. The slate, headed by Linda Greer, includes incumbent Michael Pacheco, Community Leader Rod Jones, and Dr. Alejandro Paz, a Family Practice physician. (The Paper has endorsed the above slate). Having been sanctioned, Clark was

stripped of his Committe Chairmanship and is not able to serve on any other committe. He is still able to vote but, typically, always votes in the negative.
Meanwhile Edwards-Tate has been labeled as a “prima donna” by several of her board colleagues as well as staff members.
The Palomar Health District is the largeset Health District in the state of California, has a huge budget to administer, and, unfortunately, is often ignored by the voting public. As a result, mediocre candidates are often attracted to, and elected, to office. The current slate, if elected, appears to offer a strong possible remedy. Vista city manager resigns after council hampers hiring authority
After nearly 11 years in the position, Vista’s city manager has resigned in opposition to a new policy that removed his sole authority over the department head hiring process. Patrick Johnson informed the city of his involuntary resignation in an Oct. 13 letter, stating that he made the decision following the City Council’s adoption of a code change in September which required him to appoint department heads in consultation and

Welcome back home, Olga! •••• Received a nice note from Dr. Greg Hurt, that magnificent dentist who head up the San Marcos Dental Center.
As you’ll recall, they had to shut their clinic down due to a water leak in the building foundation; major repairs were needed. While the contractors were fixing the problem the staff made good use of the down time. Dr. Hurt headed to Arizona to visit his son and grandson, Sandy went back to Minnesota before the snow started to fly so she could visit her children, grand children and great grandchildren, Hortencia went to Mexico to visit family; Lulu went to Germany to visit her daughter and granddaughter, Hayate went all the way back home to Morocco to visit her mom and sisters. Maria took a weekend trip to Las Vegas . . .and now, everyone is rested and back at work. The clinic renovations have been completed and they are now seeing patients (one of which was me. I had a root canal a couple weeks ago by none other than the Master himself, Dr. Greg Hurt). Absolutely painless . . . and done beautifully! Here was a perfect example of how a clinic, its owner and staff, took what to most folks would appear to be a crisis and, instead, turned it in to a positive experience for all.

A city staff report confirms that Johnson is currently on paid administrative leave. The Vista City Council appointed Assistant City Manager Amanda Lee as acting city manager at its Tuesday meeting while the city searches for Johnson’s replacement. The controversial policy altering the terms of Johnson’s contract was adopted by the City Council in a 41 vote back in September, with Mayor Judy Ritter dissenting, and set to take effect on Oct. 14.
The policy includes a sunset clause which will revert the policy back to its original language six months after its adoption, removing council involvement in the hiring process. During those six months, staff planned to develop a policy that would include a hiring panel to advise the city manager on qualified applicants. City leaders, stakeholders and community members will have a chance to discuss what the hiring panel will look like and how to develop this policy moving forward at a workshop scheduled for Thursday.
Councilmember John Franklin, who initially voted against the policy when it was introduced in August but voted in favor of it in September, said while he was aware that Johnson may choose to resign, it still came as a surprise. “He certainly made clear that it was a possible outcome. I think we were still surprised when he tendered his voluntary resignation,” Franklin said. “It was a great loss to lose Patrick Johnson. He was very highly thought of by the employees. to acquire legally in the United States, where machine guns cannot legally be owned without a special license. In recent years, these small metal or plastic devices have exploded in popularity on the black market and gained a particular cachet among criminals and anti-government extremists. Last year, members of the Boogaloo Boys, an accelerationist movement that hopes to spark a second civil war, used weapons equipped with auto sears to attack a federal courthouse. From 2017 to 2021, the number of cases jumped from 10 to 83, according to our exclusive nationwide analysis of court filings. We found over 260 cases filed in the last five years, including robberies, assaults, and murders, with over 1,000 devices recovered. The government has not previously compiled this data, and the actual number of illegally converted machine guns on the streets is likely far higher. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the federal agency responsible for policing guns in the U.S., said it seized 1,500 weapons modified with auto sears in 2021, a staggering increase over 2020, when only 300 were recovered.
“Auto sears are everywhere on the street right now,” said Jefferey Boshek, a 21-year ATF veteran who now serves as the special agent in charge of the Dallas Field Division. “They’re one of the scariest things we’ve dealt with since I became an agent.”
The ascent of the auto sear has been propelled by its availability and ease of use. The American market is largely supplied by China, where manufacturers sell the devices on websites like Alibaba and Wish.com directly to consumers, law enforcement officials say. Auto sears are often advertised as airsoft parts or tools and shipped with false documentation and packaging labels. They can also be created using a 3D printer. Once in a person’s hands, installation can take just seconds and requires scant technical knowledge or tools.
Page 6
“It is so simple,” said Rick Vasquez, the former head of the ATF’s Firearms Technology Division. “The information is out there, and the knowledge to do it is out.”
To gang members, auto sears are an advantageous new accessory that can inflict incredible damage and intimidate enemies, especially when paired with high-capacity magazines. One California ATF agent, who declined to be named because he was not authorized to speak on the agency’s behalf, said that in his first decade on the job, he hardly ever came across machine guns; now he sees firearms that have been converted with auto sears “all the time.” Some criminals, the agent added, have been caught with the devices on ghost guns — untraceable firearms that can be made at home or obtained without a background check. In 1934, after several highprofile crimes involving machine guns, Congress passed the National Firearms Act, which required anyone who owned a fully automatic weapon to register it with the government and pay a $200 tax, equivalent to about $4,000 today. This significantly drove up the cost and difficulty of owning one.
Industrious gunsmiths searched for workarounds. In the ’70s, conversion devices started surfacing in niche gun communities but the general public rarely sought them out. It became more difficult to obtain an auto sear in 1981, when the ATF ruled that possessing one was, in legal terms, the same as owning a machine gun, whether or not the device was installed on a firearm. Having an auto sear without the proper federal license, which requires an extensive background check and costly fees, can carry a 10year federal prison sentence. “You really do have to take it seriously. Some may argue it’s only a matter of time before we see one of these shooting sprees actually be conducted with full-auto weapons.”

Action Needed
When the Legislature convenes for the 2023-2024 session December 5th, some big issues will be waiting for us. They include crime, the cost of living, water supply – these problems and many more need immediate attention.
According to a recent report from the Attorney General’s office, violent crime increased by 6.7% from 2020 to 2021. Property crimes increased 3%, the total arrest rate decreased 7.3%, adults on probation are at the lowest level since 1980, and the total number of full-time criminal justice personnel decreased by 2.7%. So crime rose, but law enforcement personnel, arrests and probation rates have gone down. Even so, we can reduce crime; we just need to put criminals in jail, with supervised probation and substance use and mental health treatment programs that prevent future crimes. The rising cost of living is a national problem, resulting largely from the federal government printing trillions out of thin air – a policy that always causes inflation. Rising oil costs are another factor. California has massive inland oil reserves, while most of our oil is imported from overseas. But our gas taxes add more per gallon than the national average.
have introduced multiple bills to expand storage facilities and encourage use of recycled water for agriculture. Unfortunately, those bills were blocked by the majority in Sacramento. Desalination is one partial solution, but it took over 14 years to get the Poseidon plant in Carlsbad approved and a similar plant in Orange County was recently blocked. Bureaucratic hurdles standing in the way of vital water projects must be eliminated.
These are just a few of the many critical issues we face. Hopefully, bipartisanship and commonsense won’t be in short supply next session. Assemblymember Marie Waldron, RValley Center, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.
What about water? Voters approved a water bond in 2014 to fund new reservoirs and aqueducts, with minimal progress on two reservoirs underway and no big projects being planned. I

More Problems for SANDAG
Here we go again, SANDAG is once again mismanaging taxpayer dollars.
Last week, an internal audit was released that found multiple issues with the way SANDAG manages and processes contracts with outside vendors. Key takeaways include a disproportionate preference to certain vendors, with some contractors receiving up to 700% more than initially awarded. One vendor received a $64 million increase from the original contract. This follows a trend of out-of-control misspending from SANDAG. Earlier this year, an audit found that over the past four years of credit card purchases, SANDAG spent over $2,485,001 of taxpayer dollars on their procurement card. This included nearly $70,000 spent at local restaurants and $250,000 spent on non-working days.
For those of you unfamiliar with SANDAG, they're the regional transportation agency. They're in charge of funding and projects for freeways and public transportation. They're currently working on a $165 billion transportation plan, but are going to need to come back to the taxpayers in order to fund that project. The plan taxes working-class families and the underserved communities that aren’t able to afford to live next to where they work. It crushes landscapers, plumbers, farmers, electricians, parents and families, and anyone who
must drive or work and live away from fixed rail lines to make a living. San Diegans deserve a world-class transportation system, but it must be thought out carefully and must be presented to the taxpayers, not decided by bureaucrats.
SANDAG needs to get its own house in order before they come back to the taxpayers with its hand out. We should not be on the hook for any more of SANDAG's lavish spending.

A place to heal: 106-bed center in Escondido significantly expands recuperative care for homeless
Interfaith Community Services’ new facility will help homeless people recently discharged from hospitals Homeless people who are discharged from a hospital, but still have some healing ahead, will have a safe, comfortable and dignified place to stay in the near future at the Abraham & Lillian Turk Recuperative Care Center, where a grand opening celebration was held last Wednesday morning in Escondido. The ceremony was the culmination of a two-year, $15 million renovation of a 1970s-era motel at 555 N. Centre City Parkway, Interfaith Community Services’ singlebiggest undertaking in its 43-year history.
“Imagine what it would be like having been in the hospital, being ready for discharge to home, except in this case you’re unsheltered, without a place to call home,” said Patricia Mack, Interfaith’s director of housing. Mack also asked guests at the ceremony to imagine the challenge of finding a clean space to change bandages or having to choose between visiting a doctor for a follow-up appointment or keeping watch over all your possessions for fear they would be stolen when away. CEO Greg Anglea said within the past year the Ash Street facility has provided recuperative care for 147 people, with more than 50 percent moving into housing. Since its opening in 2015, the center has served 1,500 people.
The program has a 93 percent success rate in stabilizing the medical condition that led a client to hospitalization and a 79 percent success rate of transitioning people into stable housing. The program also found 82 percent of clients reported a reduction in depression. The new Abraham & Lillian Turk Recuperative Care Center will provide 106 beds in 60 rooms. Next month, people in the Ash Street center will begin moving into the new center, where they will find therapeutic care, mental health and substance recovery help if needed, 24hour behavioral health support, nursing care and case management that can lead to independent living and permanent housing. Interfaith bought the old America’s Best Value Inn & Suites on Centre City Parkway in 2020 for $8.6 million and temporarily used it as a shelter during the pandemic. Anglea said the motel had a bad reputation in the city. Jerry and Carole Turk of La Jolla

Q: I rented a car from Hertz more than a year ago. Another motorist rear-ended my rental. I was slightly hurt, and the rental sustained minor damage to the bumper.
I followed all the rules during the claims process. The other driver's insurance paid a $2,000 claim to Hertz. A Hertz representative told me the claim was closed.
I got a call almost 10 months after the accident from Hertz telling me I still owe them $658 for loss of use, underpayment by the other driver's insurance and a processing fee. Hertz claims it called me "many times." But it was the first time I had heard from the company. I can't file another claim with my insurance because I'm past the 60day limit. I thought it was a scam because it was so long after the accident, it just didn’t seem realistic. Hertz has now sent my case to collections. What can I do? I’ve sent emails to customer relations, and I used your reference guide to email corporate members of Hertz. But I keep getting the runaround. Hertz now refuses to speak to me, only referring me to the outside collection agency. I would appreciate any assistance in this matter. -Michael Edgar, Vancouver, Wash. A: Hertz should have closed your claim when it said it did. The fees it's charging for loss of use and processing are controversial. Some might even call them junk fees. Loss of use covers the hypothetical revenue the car rental company would get if the vehicle wasn't in the repair shop. Many insurance adjusters won't cover this fee. Chances are, the other driver's insurance wouldn't cover it -- leaving you with the bill. The administrative fee is also problematic. It's essentially asking you to cover the car rental company's other costs associated with repairing the vehicle, such as employee salaries and other overhead expenses. Again, I'm betting her insurance refused to pay this junk fee. If an employee tells you that you're good to go, you should be good to go. But it's best to get this decision in writing. That's particularly true when you're dealing with a car rental damage claim.
I see you tried to use the executive contacts for Hertz on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org. Someone should have responded quickly and fixed this for you. I contacted Hertz on your behalf. It dropped the claim against you. Christopher Elliott's latest book is

Are You Ready to Cast Your Ballot?
We’re on the eve of our next “midterm” national election. As voters it’s never too late for all of us to brush up on our Constitutional rights, especially those Americans who have never voted before. For those of you who had a fair amount of history in school, you may recall what Abraham Lincoln said as the Civil War began: “A house divided cannot stand.” As each of our elections pass it would seem, as a nation, we are dangerously coming close to a “house divided.”
The World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans and most of their families soon will be gone. Why is that important? Most represent the last of our society who received a somewhat rounded civics education, witnessed the effects of geopolitics, and had an understanding of basic American citizenship. If you didn’t learn it in school or college, the military did a pretty good job of filling in what might have been overlooked in class during elementary and high school. Having parents to give a good example for the family also is/was important. Most of those in today’s society under 40 years of age received little or no basics in American history, civics, and world geography. Ask any from this age group if they can answer simple questions all immigrants receive when they are going through their naturalization citizenship test and you might be shocked at the answers or lack thereof you may receive from these native-born citizens. We have college students today who can’t name their congressional representative in Washington D.C., how many members make up the U.S. Senate, who’s our vice president, in what city is their respective state capital, where is the United Nations building located, and name at least three of our founding fathers.
How many of you have had a few basic lessons in civics? Sadly, too many from our latest generations haven’t a clue as to how our government basically works and what significance it has played in global politics. The American form of government is the first “democratic republic” to be created – and still in existence. Voting citizens of today (18 and older) have an important role to carry out. They need to understand our Bill of Rights, and what prompted Thomas Jefferson to write the Declaration of Independence. Why did we fight World War II – and more importantly – who won? It might be
interesting to find out just how many of those recent street protesters were newly naturalized citizens … probably none because they came to this country to enjoy what most of us take for granted .... freedom to vote. Before being sworn in, all of those naturalized citizens have to pass a test with questions about our country, government and history … things few of our students of today learn in school because there’s little or no civics (sometimes call government) instruction. Now, you might consider the above as exaggerated questions, but try posing some of them to our nativeborn young and middle-aged people of today who have attended and graduated from high school, even college.
It is surprising, even shocking, the lack of civic education our schools and colleges of today provide about our government and citizenship … basic Civics 101. Simple things such as … what is a “republic?” The difference between a democratic government and one that is a monarch or a fascist dictatorship. How many people in today’s society know what the “Electoral College” is and what importance did it play in the elections of 2000 and 2016. Do you know the difference between a democracy and a republic? Remember this disconcerning thought: young people of today will be in charge of the nation’s purse strings tomorrow. They will be, or already are, voting. Wouldn’t you like for them to know what they’re doing? Most of today’s young people don’t know what they don’t know.
TEST YOURSELF -- To test anyone try the few questions below – all are from the basic citizenship test given to all immigrants before can become naturalized U.S. citizens. Every voter should be able to answer at least half of these basic questions. 1. Who is in charge of the executive branch? 2. What is freedom of religion? 3. How old do citizens have to be to vote for President? 4. If both the President and the Vice President can no longer serve, who becomes President? 5. What is the political party of today’s President? 6. Who lived in America before the Europeans arrived? 7. What is a Constitutional amendment? 8. Who makes “Federal” laws? 9. What ocean is on the West Coast of the United States? 10. Name one U.S. territory. 11. Who was President during World War I? 12. To whom was the Declaration of Independence aimed? 13. Who does a U.S. Senator represent? 14. How many states make up the United States? 15. Who or what has veto power?

Problem Solved
Q: I have an annual service contract with Sears for my appliances, which costs $50 per month plus $75 for each service call.
I had a problem with my GE Profile refrigerator a few weeks ago. The earliest they could offer a service call was 12 days later. I tried desperately to change the date because of the emergency but found it impossible to do that. I had to purchase a new refrigerator and had the problem one moved to the garage.
When the repairman arrived, he would not service the refrigerator because it was not in the kitchen. They said I would still be charged $75 for the call. I've sent several emails to Sears but I have not heard back. This treatment is as insulting and infuriating as the failure of service was with my refrigerator. I'd like Sears to service the refrigerator. Can you help? -- Vivian Glassman, Boynton Beach, Fla.
Page 8
A: Sears shouldn't charge you if it refuses to repair your refrigerator. But why did it?
I asked Sears to have a look at your contract. Sears works with a third party called Cinch Home Services to administer the home warranty. Your warranty became effective 30 days after you bought it. You made a repair request within days of buying the warranty, which means it wasn't valid, according to Sears. "This could potentially mean she had a pre-existing condition that could void coverage," a Sears representative told me. You checked your dates and say you were well beyond the 30-day waiting period. That makes sense. If you were not within your warranty, then Sears or Cinch would have informed you of that and not sent a technician.
There's another issue. Your contract only covers one refrigerator. If you want coverage on a second one, you have to add it to the contract and then pay an additional amount for coverage. "So Ms. Glassman says she only just moved it there because she bought a new one for the kitchen, but there is no way to really estab-

Either way, a technician should have mentioned the one refrigerator rule to you, too -- and you should have received a notification about what is covered when you purchased the home warranty. But the technician only refused to service the refrigerator, citing company policy. And by your account, no one from Sears mentioned these limitations to you. You could have appealed this to one of the Sears executive contacts I list on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org. A brief, polite email to one of them might have fixed the problem quickly. 30th Annual Seacrest Foundation Golf, Tennis, and Pickleball Day Raises Over $160,000 for Seacrest Village Residents in Need
Guardians of San Diego’s 30th Annual Golf, Tennis, and Pickleball Day presented by Seacrest Foundation, with presenting sponsor, William Gumpert Foundation, raised over $160,000. Proceeds from “Take a Swing for Seniors” held October 24th will benefit the Resident Assistance Fund of Seacrest Village.
Seacrest Foundation hosted over 100 golfers, tennis players, and pickleball players at Monday’s event at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort and Golf Club in Carlsbad, as well as dozens of additional attendees for the reception and awards ceremony. Aviara Golf Club is San Diego’s only golf course designed by Arnold Palmer. The golf tournament began at noon with a shotgun start on the beautiful course, and the tennis and pickleball players started later in the afternoon with all tournament play ending with a cocktail reception. All players enjoyed a variety of snacks and refreshments throughout the day, including a margarita station, and beverages generously donated by Constellation Brands (via Crest Beverage) and Cutwater Spirits.
The all-day event started with a BBQ buffet lunch and included a raffle drawing with a $1,000 first prize, a “wine putt” activity, where guests pay $30 to putt towards bottles of wine valued from $30-$100, and a large online auction. Hot items in the auction included golf at the Grand Del Mar, Hillcrest Country Club, The Crosby, and Morgan Run, along with Las Vegas vacation packages, a staycation at Hilton Torrey Pines, date nights,

The Pastor Says...
Pastor Richard Huls (Retired)
WHAT’S IN A NAME?
After reading Frederick Gomez’s article, “His name was not Jesus” (The Paper June 16, 2022) I was reminded of a quote in Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” In other words, changing the name would not change the flower. It would still be a rose. Such is the name given to the man (Jesus 5-33 AD). Some called him Lord, The Son of David, The Lamb of God, The Saviour, The Christ, and the 1st century name, Yeshua. He has been characterized by racial color and physical features depending on his followers. Thus we see that changing the name does not change the person. I compliment Frederick on his research and article. Questions that are often asked about Jesus such as “What did he look like?”,”Did Jesus ever laugh?” were expertly discussed. I would have enjoyed a

few more questions such as, “Did he ever get angry and why, and was he ever attracted sexually to women?” We will have to wait for these answers.
Jesus was curious about how people identified him. He asked his disciples, “Who do people say I am.” There were various answers which showed the confusion about him in his own time period. Ultimately, it came down to what his disciple believed, “Who do you say I am?”
The irony is not just having a name but knowing what the name means. Yeshua, if that is the name people used, and many use today, it is a call to action. He said, “You call me Lord, Lord, but don’t do the things I command you. If you love me keep my commandments.” The first body of believers called Christian in Antioch believed in Yeshua as the Son of God and the Messiah, the Anointed of God, fulfilling all God’s Promises and human history. So we ask again,” What’s in a name?” For Jesus, (Yeshua), so it seems, nothing unless one does what he says.

Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” McNamara Greetings Escondido,
I had the opportunity to attend Interfaith’s annual meeting which coincided with the Ribbon Cutting for the Turk Recuperative Care Center. I really think that Interfaith deserves a big shout out for all that they have done for our community, especially the homeless. There are others of course, like Mental Health Systems, but Interfaith is the largest. It was started by concerned members of the community over 40 years ago, who just decided something needed to be done. I always thought it was a good example for the rest of us.
When I first became mayor, the North County electeds decided that rhetoric alone would not solve the homeless problem, and we formed a committee to work the problem and see what could be done given the laws we had to operate under and the limited resources. Even through COVID, as the chair of that committee, we worked to identify division of labor responsibilities like health (county) and public safety (cities.) This is and was as you can imagine a huge team effort with many unsung heroes deserving credit for taking this on. But Supervisor Desmond and former Supervisor Gaspar deserve special shout outs for their role in moving this effort forward and helping build the partnerships needed. And while we have a way to go, we have the community energized and we are seeing results. As an example, the Turk Center was just a conversation among myself, Greg Anglea (Interfaith CEO) and former Supervisor Gaspar just a few years ago. We also have seen in Escondido an over 30% drop in unsheltered homeless. It shows that when people work together things can get done.

“Oh really,” Nome pursued, “Last week a black Toyota with tiny tires and a carload of teenagers scraped its bottom while pulling out of our parking lot. Do you remember what you said?” “Sure, I said that those stupid undersized tires were a dumb, impractical fad.”
“Remember your 1951 Mercury. The color was metallic lilac, the top was chopped, it was lowered to within an inch of the ground, it had no door handles and you could hear the mufflers in the next county? That was impractical!” ‘Completely different thing”, I said, “The Merc was cool.” “How do you like today’s pop music?” She asked. “It all sounds the same,” I snorted.
“Uh huh,” said Nome “and how did you like last year’s Oscar winner “AMERICAN BEAUTY”. “It made me want to go home and take a shower”, I admitted.
when it gets light and dark and adjust their lives accordingly.
Just like humans, animals have internal clocks that tell them when to eat, sleep and wake up. But pets rely on natural sunlight while humans use artificial lighting. Animals that live with humans develop routines related to human activity. This might be dogs who are walked at the same time or cats who get fed at the same time every day.
It Only Happens Twice a Year. For most pets, that’s twice too many.
It only happens twice a year, but the switch to Daylight Saving Time in the Spring and back to Standard Time in the Fall can be really confusing for pets. A little patience goes a long way in helping pets make the adjustment.
The time change can be really hard for pets (and us!) Animal shelters, veterinarians, and behaviorists get calls from people saying their dogs and cats don't want to eat. Some pets seem to sleep all the time. Others are awake and doing Zoomies at 3:00 in the morning.” Pets usually adjust to the schedules of their owners. They get up about the same time as when we get up and go to sleep when we go to bed. Pets love having a routine. They like being fed at about the same time every day. They understand
When humans switch to DST or back to Standard time, we adjust our routines. Pets have no idea what’s happening. It seems like the animals are behaving oddly. It’s actually us behaving oddly. And we can’t explain it to them.
When you “Fall Back” and set your clock back an hour this weekend, remember that your pets need a little paw-holding during the time change. If you can make a gradual change, that’s great. But, since that’s not possible for everyone, try to be patient and give your pets lots of reassurance that everything is going to be okay.

“Is the younger generation different than your generation?” Nome continued. I thought about that one for a minute but I couldn’t help falling further into Nome’s trap. “Yep, they’re worse.” I said, “When we grew up folks lived in small towns and neighborhoods. You couldn’t be a jerk because you knew everyone. Today you can spend a whole day in the mall and never see a familiar face. As a result people have become ruder and less tolerant.”
“OK,” said Nome “Let’s summarize. You don’t like new fads, movies or music and you think the younger generation is going to hell but, you are not a curmudgeon, right?” “That’s right. Age and experience
have made me wiser and more discriminating. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt”, I said. Nome pressed on. “And what would you call a person your age who doesn’t feel as you do.”
I could feel the tide turning my way. “I would call that person a case of arrested development,” I said triumphantly. Nome’s eyes narrowed “I see” said she. “And what do you call yourself and others who think as you do?”
I knew the answer “We are “old farts” plain and simple, and we outnumber the rest of you in our age group ten to one.”

My London pal says:
"I was reading an article last night about fathers and daughters, and it brought memories flooding back of the time I took my own daughter out for her first drink. Off we went to my local pub, which is only a few hundred yards down the road. I got her a Heineken. She didn't like it. I had to drink it. Then I got her a half of Bass. She didn't like that either, so I drank it. It was the same with the Kronenberg, the Carlsberg and the Amstel Light. By the time we got down to the Johnnie Walker I could hardly push her pram home." He adds:
"I've got two Pakistani flags raised in front of my house and

the black flag of ISIS in the centre. The local police, MI5, and other intelligence services are all watching my place around the clock. I've never felt safer." While I believe this story to be apocryphal, I find it sufficiently amusing to pass along: Marine Corps Dining Etiquette
The Commandant of the Marine Corps was General Al Gray, a crusty old 'Field Marine.' He loved his Marines and often slipped into the mess hall wearing a faded old field jacket without any rank or insignia on it. He would go through the chow line just like a private. In this way, he was assured of being given the same rations that the lowest enlisted man received. Woe be it to the mess officer if the food was found to be unfit in quality or quantity. Upon becoming Commandant, General Gray was expected to do a great deal of 'formal entertaining'...fancy dinner parties in full dress blue uniform. Now, the General would rather have been in the field eating cold 'Crats' around a fighting hole with a bunch of young 'hard charging' Marines. But the General knew his duty and as a Marine he was determined to do it to the best of his ability. During these formal parties, a detachment of highly polished Marines from 'Eighth and Eye' (Marine Barracks located at 8th and I Streets in Washington, D.C., home of the Silent Drill Team) were detailed to assume the position of 'parade rest' at various intervals around the ballroom where the festivities were being held.
At some point during one of these affairs, a very refined, blue-haired lady picked up a tray of pastries and went around the room offering confections to the guests. When she noticed these Marines in dress blues, standing like sculptures all around the room, she was moved with admiration. She knew that several of these men were fresh from our victory in the MidEast. She made a beeline for the closest Lance Corporal, drew near him and asked, 'Would you like pastry young man?'
The young Marine snapped to 'attention' and replied, "I don't eat that crap, Ma'am." Just as quickly, he resumed the position of 'parade rest.' His gaze remained fixed on some distant point throughout the exchange. The fancy lady was completely taken aback! She blinked, her eyes widened, her mouth dropped open. So startled was she that she immediately began to doubt what she had heard. In a quivering voice she asked, "W-W-What did you say?" The Marine snapped back to
the position of 'attention' (like the arm of a mousetrap smacking it's wooden base). Then he said, '"I don't eat that crap, Ma'am." And just as smartly as before, back to the position of 'parade rest' he went. This time, there was no doubt. The fancy lady immediately became incensed and felt insulted. After all, here she was an important lady, taking the time to offer something nice to this enlisted man (well below her station in life), and he had the nerve to say THAT to HER! She exclaimed, "Well! I never...!"
The lady remembered that she had met that military man in charge of all these 'soldiers' earlier. She spotted General Gray from across the room. He had a cigar clenched between his teeth and a camouflaged canteen cup full of bourbon in his left hand. He was talking to a group of 1st and 2nd Lieutenants. So blue haired lady went straight over to the Commandant and interrupted. "General, I offered some pastry to that young man over there, and do you know what he told me?" General Gray cocked his eyebrow, took the cigar out of his mouth and said, "Well, no Ma'am, I don't." The lady took in a deep breath, confident that she was adequately expressing with her body language her considerable rage and indignation. As she wagged her head in cadence with her words, and she paused between each word for effect, 'She said, "I - don't eat - that - crap - Ma'am!''
The lieutenants were in a state of near apoplexy. A couple of them choked back chuckles, and turned their heads to avoid having their smirks detected. The next thought that most of them had was, 'God, I hope it wasn't one of MY Marines!' and the color left their faces.
General Gray wrinkled his brow, cut his eyes in the direction of the lieutenants, put his free hand to his chin and muttered a subdued, "Hmmm Which one did you say it was Ma'am?," the General asked. "That tall sturdy one right over there near the window, General," the woman said with smug satisfaction. One of the lieutenants began to look sick and put a hand on the wall for support. General Gray, seemed deep in thought, hand still to his chin, wrinkled brow. Suddenly, he looked up and his expression changed to one indicating he had made a decision. He looked the fancy lady right

in the eyes and said, "Well, screw him! Don't give him any." The History of 'APRONS'
I don't think most kids today know what an apron is. The principle use of Mom's or Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material. But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.
From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold, she wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.
Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.
In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that
had fallen from the trees.
When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.
When dinner was ready, she walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men folk knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner. It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes. REMEMBER:
Mom's and Grandma's used to set hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw. They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron. I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron - but love.
