In 2008, the National Archives in Washington, D. C. declassified top secret files which revealed the names of 24,000 individuals who served as official U. S. spies during WWII.

Shocking for many was the fact that many of those names included some of Hollywood’s greatest movie stars of the era.

It readily became apparent that many movie stars didn’t just play the role of spies in motion pictures, but, ironically, they were actually real-life spies during the Second World War.

Over 80 years after the fact, this still remains one of Hollywood’s greatest secrets.

But, why were famous celebri-

ties incorporated as U. S spies in the first place?

MOVIE STARS HAD A UNIQUE POWER TO TRAVEL ANYWHERE ABROAD WITHOUT RESTRAINT OR SUSPICION. U. S. and British Intelligence thought it advantageous to enlist the services of celebrities who had high-level and powerful fans in various industries.

Many celebrities had easy access to important and influential politicians, high ranking government officials, royalty, and heads of state, all of whom would grant special favours that later proved advantageous to the American WWII agenda.

And due to their recognition and celebrity clout, they also were able to pass through cus-

toms and check-points with ease, without strictures and guidelines which the normal citizenry had to abide by.

And also, Hollywood stars never aroused suspicion as actually being top secret spies or espionage agents in real life.

In this exclusive, investigative report to The Paper, it will stun many to realise that these famous celebrity spies actually helped shape the outcome of the Second World War.

ACTOR JOHN WAYNE (1907-1979). By and large, it was often a mixed bag of celebrities with only a few who were not always wellreceived or popular with the public, depending on the historical timeline.

For example, when actor John Wayne entertained the U. S. troops during his USO tours in 1942 and 1943, he was greeted with a chorus of boos when he first walked on stage.

Because the WWII combat troops in the audience saw John Wayne, who was in his mid-30s, not as one of them but, rather, as a draft dodger.

After all, John Wayne never enlisted in the U. S. military and, instead, filed for a 3-A draft deferment which stated: “If the sole provider for a family of four were drafted, it could cause his family undue hardship.”

Wayne met the deferment guidelines because he was married and, indeed, had a family of four and was still a somewhat fledgling actor.

Thus, Wayne was booed during his 1942-43 WWII USO tours.

And yet a different timeline saw a different perception of John Wayne.

For example, many years later he was warmly greeted when he visited American soldiers in Vietnam during the summer of 1966.

Nonetheless, the ‘draft dodger’ label was occasionally resurrected and followed him,

1. June 15: He took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in other people's carts when they weren't looking.

2. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in Housewares to go off at 5-minute intervals.

3. July 7: He made a trail of tomato juice on the floor leading to the women's restroom.

lurking in the shadows throughout his life.

The open fact that John Wayne never served in the military, haunted him for the rest of his life, mainly due to occasional public criticism which sporadically resurfaced in the newspapers.

His third wife, Pilar Wayne, says he became: “A superpatriot for the rest of his life trying to atone for staying at home during the war.”

The Duke never spoke of his covert spy operations and how he secretly served the U. S. military during WWII. It was still highly-classified at the time.

But it would have expunged the draft-dodger stigma, which was a mule-kick to his innards.

When Wayne was still married to his first-wife, Josephine Wayne (1933-1945), he had just completed his classic 1939 film “Stagecoach” -- but unknown to everyone, he lived a double life during those years.

All shrouded and hidden away in classified documents.

9. September 4: Looked right into the security camera and used it as a mirror while he picked his nose.

10. September 10: While handling guns in the hunting department, he asked the clerk where the antidepressants were.

After I retired, my wife insisted that I accompany her on her trips to Target.

Unfortunately, like most men, I found shopping boring and preferred to get in and get out. Equally unfortunate, my wife is like most womenshe loves to browse.

Yesterday my dear wife received the following letter from the local Target:

Dear Mrs. Davis:

, Over the past six months, your husband has caused quite a commotion in our store. We cannot tolerate this behavior and have been forced to ban both of you from the store. Our complaints against your husband, Mr. Davis, are listed below and

4. July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official voice, 'Code 3 in Housewares. Get on it right away'. This caused the employee to leave her assigned station and receive a reprimand from her Supervisor that in turn resulted with a union grievance, causing management to lose time and costing the company money.

5. August 4: Went to the Service Desk and tried to put a bag of M&Ms on layaway.

6. August 14: Moved a 'CAUTION - WET FLOOR' sign to a carpeted area.

7. August 15: Set up a tent in the camping department and told the children shoppers he'd invite them in if they would bring pillows and blankets from the bedding department to which twenty children obliged.

8. August 23: When a clerk asked if they could help him he began crying and screamed, 'Why can't you people just leave me alone?' EMTs were called.

11. October 3: Darted around the store suspiciously while loudly humming the ' Mission Impossible' theme.

12. October 6: In the auto department, he practiced his 'Madonna look' by using different sizes of funnels.

13. October 18: Hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed through, yelled 'PICK ME! PICK ME!'

14. October 21: When an announcement came over the loud speaker, he assumed a fetal position and screamed 'OH NO! IT'S THOSE VOICES AGAIN!'

And last, but not least:

15. October 23: Went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited awhile, then yelled very loudly, 'Hey! There's no toilet paper in here.' One of the clerks passed out.

Government surveyors came to Ole's farm in the fall and asked if they could do some surveying. Ole agreed, and Lena even served them a nice meal at noon time.

There were a few leaked rumours about Wayne being a heroic secret U. S. military spy . . . but rumours were just that: rumours, which are a country mile short of fact.

On 11 June 1979, soft-spoken movie icon, Marion Robert Morrison, better known to the world as John Wayne, lost another battle which stalked him, aside from the lifelong draft-dodger stigma.

He lost another kind of battle, his final battle to cancer at age 72.

When he died at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Hospital, he was one of the most beloved Hollywood movie stars in history.

Ole, "Because you were so kind to us, we wanted to give you this bad news in person instead of by letter."

Ole replied, "Vaat’s da bad news?"

The surveyors stated, "Well, after our work here, we discovered your farm is not in Minnesota but is actually in Wisconsin!"

After his death, a mysteriouslooking document was found among his personal belongings.

Neatly tucked away, modestly, in his personal home files. None of his three different wives even knew of its existence.

The official, notarised document was a formal certificate from Mr. William Donovan, U. S. Commander of the Offices of Strategic Services (OSS) which was America’s top intelligence agency during the Second World War (the OSS is the precursor to today’s CIA).

In the document, the head of the OSS thanked Mr. John Wayne for his top secret spy services during WWII in gathering critical and indispensable war information which was invaluable in our war effort.

The Duke, indeed, did serve his country with great pride and dedication as a covert operative.

He just never spoke of it, as he was never allowed to, due to its ultra-sensitive nature.

On the surface, his spy work for U. S. Intelligence included undercover work and sensitive intelligence gathering from such distant areas as Brisbane, Australia and other (undisclosed) locales.

When the media stampeded to inquire of William Donovan, U. S. Commander of the OSS, what exactly were John Wayne’s spy missions, Mr. Donovan refused to divulge the specifics as still classified espionage work Mr. John Wayne so crucially performed in the service of his beloved country.

Spy work is dangerous. And often frightening.

As the Duke often said, with another pet quote: “All battles are fought by scared men who’d rather be some place else.”

Little did the world know, that John Wayne was some place else . . . and not exactly a draft

dodger.

He was, after all, on the frontlines for his military country in top secret missions.

And now that he’s gone . . . it’s too late to thank him.

MOVIE LEGEND AUDREY HEPBURN, WWII SPY, RISKED HER LIFE HIDING U. S. ALLIED PILOTS SHOT DOWN. Hollywood movie immortal, and British actress, Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993), was born Audrey Kathleen Ruston in Ixelles, Brussels, to an aristocratic family.

She spent parts of her childhood in Belgium, England, and the Netherlands.

In time, she would become a British actress.

Today, she is a Hollywood immortal.

Audrey Hepburn is ranked as the 3rd greatest female screen legend of all-time in the Classical Hollywood cinema.

But, her earlier life truly defined her character and almost ended her life as a mere child.

When she was a small child attending school in England, her mother moved her to the Netherlands where her mother believed they would be safe, since the Netherlands remained neutral during the war.

Things did not work out as her mother had hoped.

With the German’s invasion and brutal occupation of the Netherlands in 1940, the 11year-old Audrey Hepburn began using the name “Edda van Heemstra,” because any “English-sounding” name was considered dangerous during the German occupation. (Her mother’s maiden name was Heemstra.)

The “Heemstra” family was severely affected financially by the German occupation. Like others, her family had to resort to making flour out of tulip bulbs to bake cakes and biscuits.

Minor Decoy and Shoulder Tap Operations San Marcos

On October 27, 2022, deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department (SDSD), along with agents from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) and two minor decoys conducted Minor Decoy and Shoulder Tap Operations at various locations in the City of San Marcos.

During the Minor Decoy operation, the minor decoys visited retailers at five locations and attempted to purchase alcoholic beverages under the direct supervision of peace officers. One location sold alcohol to a minor decoy.

The clerk who sold to the minor faces a minimum fine of $250, and/or 24 to 32 hours of community service for a first violation. In addition, ABC will take administrative action against the alcoholic beverage license of the business where alcohol was sold to a minor. That may include a fine, a suspension of the license, or the permanent revocation of the license.

The Shoulder Tap operation was conducted in front of two local retail liquor stores where a minor, under the direct supervision of a peace officer, asked adults to purchase them alcohol. The minor indicated in some way they were underage and could not purchase the alcohol. Fourteen adults were contacted and one adult purchased

alcohol for the minor. The penalty for furnishing alcohol to a minor isa minimum $1,000 fine and 24 hours of community service.

ABC conducts these compliance checks statewide to reduce the availability of alcohol to minors. Statistics have shown that young people under the age of 21 have a higher rate of drunken driving fatalities than the general adult population.

SDSD partners with ABC through the Alcohol Policing Partnership (APP) grant to help prevent underage drinking and other crimes that may occur at ABC licensed establishments.

In July 2022, SDSD received an APP grant in the amount of $75,000. The money is being spent in the communities patrolled by the Sheriff’s Department to reduce alcohol-related crimes and educate ABC licensed businesses. The goal of the APP Program is to collaborate with local law enforcement agencies to help make communities safer. The cooperative efforts of the Sheriff’s Department and ABC are aimed at building positive working relationships between all stakeholders and increasing the safety of San Diego County.

We walk a little slower these days, and our eyes and hearing are not what they once were. We worked hard, raised our children, worshiped our God, and have grown old together.

Yes, we are the ones some refer to as being over the hill, and that is probably true. But before writing us off completely, there are a few things that need to be taken into

In school we studied English, history, math, and science, which enabled us to lead America into the technological age. Most of us remember what outhouses were, many of us with firsthand experience. We remember the days of telephone party-lines, 25 cent gasoline, and milk and ice being delivered to our homes. For those of you who don't know what an icebox is, today they are electric and referred to as refrigerators. A few even remember when cars were started with a crank. Yes, we lived those days.

We can quote The Pledge of Allegiance and know where to place our hand while doing so. We wore the uniform of our country with pride and lost many friends on the battlefield.

We know the words to the Star Spangled Banner, and America the Beautiful by heart, and you may even see some tears running down our cheeks as we sing. MacKenzie Scott donates $16 million to Escondido school district

Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has donated $16 million to the Escondido Union School District.

The donation from the MacKenzie Scott Foundation came as a total surprise, district Superintendent Luis Rankins-Ibarra said. He said he received a call last month from someone who said they represented a philanthropist, and was asked about the district’s work.

“The interviewer let us know that a potential supporter had been very impressed with the work we’re doing,” Rankins-Ibarra said in a statement, “and they want us to keep moving forward.”

Scott is now the single largest donor in EUSD history, the district said. The unsolicited donation will go directly to support students, the superintendent said.

Scott, an author and the former wife of billionaire Jeff Bezos, has famously vowed to give away all the money received in her divorce settlement. She is reportedly the third wealthiest woman in the world, according to Bloomberg magazine. She has given away $12.8 billion — five times more than Bezos has — in a little over two years, according to a recent

This is what you voted for, and this is what you got. We entrusted you with the Torch of Liberty, and you traded it for a paycheck and a fancy house.

Well, don't worry youngsters, the Grey-Haired Brigade is here, and in the mid-term 2022 and in 2024 elections we are going to take back our nation. We may drive a little slower than you would like, but we get where we're going, and in 2022 and 2024 we're going to the polls by the millions.

I saw your endorsement/recommendation of Consuelo Martinez for Escondido City Council District 1.

She is a former employee of the ACLU, which has become one of the most anti-American organizations in the country.

A short time later, the young Hepburn became a WWII spy; an important part of the Dutch Resistance.

And a very dangerous one at that.

Top secret files that were declassified in 2008 by the National Archives in Washington, D. C. clearly record that Audrey Hepburn was officially tapped by Sir Willem Adolph Hooft (19001985), a Dutch theologian and First Secretary of the World Council of Churches, who was instrumental in the WWII Dutch Resistance Movement against Nazi Germany.

The Dutch Resistance was involved in a wide spectrum of covert missions, reconnoitering, gathering and transmitting classified information to Allied forces, intercepting and deciphering encrypted, coded messages, etc.

Still a mere child, Audrey Hepburn now worked behind enemy lines.

As a field operative, she often risked her very young life by carrying supplies, vital messages, clothing, medicines, and even lifesaving food and water to U. S. and Allied pilots that were shot down in 1944.

She kept them in safe hiding, and while under her loving care, she provided vital decoded warfront news.

Had she been caught, she surely would have been executed. Child or not.

With total disregard for her own life, the young girl increased her covert actions, never wishing to let her vulnerable and wounded and suffering soldiers down . . . her soldiers, who awaited her every return.

Other Dutch Resistance spies could not go where she went.

She had special access.

She was barely a teenager, a child of 14, and still too young to arouse suspicion from the German police.

Additionally, Hepburn was a

polyglot, that is, she was fluent in several languages.

In her case, this allowed her to speak various languages of the Allied pilots who were shot down.

All in all, she saved countless lives as a Dutch Resistance spy.

And she was never acknowledged for it until 2008, when U. S. top secret files were declassified.

Even then, she insisted on keeping her WWII exploits private, without bravado and rarely spoke of it throughout her illustrious film career in Hollywood, where she won over 18 awards, including a Best Actress Oscar (“Roman Holiday”) and the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Ironically today, Audrey Hepburn is most noted as one of Hollywood’s greatest actresses, when perhaps her greatest role and humanitarian achievements were not on the silver screen . . . but in real life -- aiding, hiding, feeding, comforting, and saving military lives . . . the lives of our precious and invaluable U. S. and Allied Armed Forces pilots who were shot down from the skies, often still injured and she hid them all from certain death, if they were to be found.

For the remainder of her life, a much older, retired Audrey Hepburn, continued feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and visiting the sick and impoverished around the world through various humanitarian organisations.

She had promised someone, long ago, to try her best to make a better world.

She had made that silent promise, when she locked eyes with a little Jewish boy, in an oversized coat, on a train waiting to be taken away, along with his young parents, to the concentration camps during the Holocaust.

It was that look on his little face, frozen, and just staring helplessly at her.

Changes are coming

Redistricting has rearranged legislative boundaries throughout California, including the 75th Assembly District that I have represented for the past 10 years. The current district includes the cities of Escondido, San Marcos and Temecula, along with Bonsall, Fallbrook, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley and Valley Center. But that’s changing.

Escondido and San Marcos will now be located in the 76th Assembly District, and Temecula will be in the 71st. The 75th has been expanded to the east, now taking in most of rural northern and eastern San Diego County from the Riverside County line to the Mexican border, and east to the Imperial County line. It covers about two-thirds of San Diego County.

Redistricting also creates some technical issues. On November 18, our legislative data system will go dark as technicians in Sacramento go to work transferring constituent records into the new districts. The data system will be live again on December 5th. Hopefully, records will be updated so that constituents are correctly included in their new districts and constituent needs can be handled by the appropriate Assembly offices.

The 2023-2024 session begins on December 5th. Normally, the one-day session welcomes new and returning members who get sworn in, sometimes introduce a few bills, then go home for

the holidays. The new session begins in earnest after January 1st, but this time there may be more to it. Governor Newsom is talking about a special session to raise taxes on oil companies, which he says will make them cut the cost of gasoline. Yep, that’s the plan. Anyway, if there is a special session, it will most likely also occur on December 5th. In reality, nothing much is likely to happen.

The real work will begin after January 1st. Given the present state of California, we’ll have our hands full.

Funding Fentanyl Education

It’s no secret that opioids are killing Americans at an alarming rate, specifically fentanyl. In 2021, more than 900 San Deigns died from opioid-related accidental overdoses, a 54% increase from the previous year. Over 6,000 pounds of fentanyl was seized in San Diego County last year alone, which would be enough to kill 1.4 billion people.

I have made fentanyl awareness and education a top priority. We’ve declared it a crisis, funded education efforts targeting young people, held an elected official roundtable discussion –where elected leaders, from school boards to Congress, attended. And we hosted a parent fentanyl education event.

As you may have heard, at our last Board of Supervisors meeting, I made a push to make it mandatory for kids in school to be educated about the deadly effects of fentanyl. The item unanimously passed, but one major barrier was funding. I’m pleased to say today we took another major step towards protecting our kids.

In response to opioids killing people throughout our country, several jurisdictions including the County of San Diego brought forward litigation to remediate the opioid addictions and harm. We are expected to receive tens of millions of dollars as part of the settlement, which will go towards our

local opioid crisis.

Last week, the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a framework for the allocation of these funds, including my effort to require fentanyl awareness education in San Diego County classrooms. We cannot wait any longer, young people are tragically dying from fentanyl, and we need to do all we can to protect San Diegans. This funding will expedite this process and hopefully save more lives.

Q: I booked four Lufthansa tickets from Brussels to San Francisco through Kiwi.com in 2021. Lufthansa canceled the flight. Kiwi.com offered to request a refund. We have received two automated responses so far, but no refund.

I have not yet contacted Lufthansa directly since Kiwi.com is our online travel agency. It's been a year since Kiwi promised to help us get a refund. Can you help us get our $3,450 back, please? -Nancy Plasschaert, Antwerpen, Belgium

A: You should have received a refund almost immediately. Under Lufthansa's general conditions, the legal contract between you and the airline, "in the event of a cancellation, rebooking or delay, a reimbursement of the fare may be possible under certain conditions." And you met those conditions, which Kiwi.com verified.

You should have received your money back within a week. But Lufthansa would not refund you directly. It would send it to Kiwi.com, which would then pass the money along to you. So what happened?

I asked Kiwi if the holdup was on the Lufthansa side or if the agency had experienced a delay. It did not respond.

Your case illustrates one of the drawbacks of using an online travel agency. The intermediary can protect you when things go wrong. But that third party can also cause delays, which would have happened to you even if Lufthansa had refunded you immediately. Kiwi warned you that you might have to wait months for your money.

"Please be patient," it told you in an email. "We estimate that some refunds will take approximately three months. However, many carriers are now delaying their refund processes, and in some cases, the waiting time might be longer."

Why so long? Well, part of it may be related to the pandemic -although that excuse is getting a little old. By then, Lufthansa was close to two years into the pandemic and should have figured out a way to streamline its procedures.

At some point, you should have reached out directly to Lufthansa to ask for your money. I would have reached that point after about a month. You lasted almost a year, encouraged by Kiwi's promises.

ny. Your bank or credit card could have taken the money back if you had shown them the email from Kiwi.com. A dispute department would have seen that promise as a credit memo and returned all of your money.

I contacted Kiwi on your behalf. A representative responded immediately and promised to look into your refund. But two weeks later, there was no sign of your money. So I reached out again. This time, a representative got in touch with you and refunded your $3,450. "The process got delayed due to still unprocessed refund from the airline side," a Kiwi representative told me.

So should you have booked a trip with Kiwi.com? We don't get a lot of complaints about the company -- so few that we don't even list their company contacts on our advocacy site. But I note that the company advertises itself as an agency that likes to "hack the system." Maybe next time, it can hack the system and get you a faster refund.

Q: I need help with a Whirlpool refrigerator that has damaged my kitchen. I have experienced nothing but issues with the appliance since I got it in 2020. The ice maker doesn't work. The leaky refrigerator caused $4,200 of damage to my kitchen floor.

Whirlpool asked me to fill out a claim form, which I did. But I have not heard back from the company. I am a loyal Whirlpool customer. All of my appliances are from Whirlpool. I want Whirlpool to repair my refrigerator and pay for the damages. Can you help me? -- Steven Pearson, Boston

A: Whirlpool should take responsibility for a faulty appliance and cover any damage the appliance causes. Or should it?

Looking at your warranty, there are two things to note: First, it's a one-year warranty, so your ice maker would only be covered if you reported the problem the first year after purchase. And second, it specifically doesn't cover damage resulting from "accident, alteration, misuse, abuse, fire, flood, improper installation, acts of God, or use of products not approved by Whirlpool Corporation or Whirlpool Canada Inc."

An Iconic Time For Roadside Education

If the name “Burma Shave” has little or no meaning to you, then read on for a quick “roadside” history lesson in advertising that was popular to motorists of the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and early 60s. If you know about the signs, you’ll enjoy some pleasant memories. If you don’t remember, then here’s a fun look back at an iconic period of Americana. It was a time when the highways had one lane going each way at a speed limit that was, hopefully, “reasonable and prudent.”

A loyal reader recently reminded me about those dark days of the Great Depression when U.S. highways across America had educational ditties tinged with entertainment slogans along the way. Drivers and their passengers were cleverly greeted by strings of roadside signs sponsored by Burma Shave, a popular men’s shaving cream product of that era.

The Burma-Shave sign-series first appeared along U.S. Highway 65 near Lakeville, Minnesota, in 1926, and remained a major roadside advertising component until 1963 throughout most of the United States.

In the early days before the Great Depression, the southwestern states of New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada were not included because they were thought to have insufficient road traffic. Many highways in those states weren’t even paved. Massachusetts was eliminated from the program due to that state's high-cost land rentals and thick roadside foliage. Typically, consecutive small poetic signs would be posted along the edge of highways, spaced for sequential reading by passing motorists. The last sign was almost always the name of “Burma Shave.”

This use of a series of small signs, each of which bore part of a commercial message, was a successful approach to highway advertising during the early years of highway travel, drawing the attention of passing motorists who were curious to learn the punchline. As the modern Interstate system expanded in the late 1950s and vehicle speeds increased, it became more difficult to attract motorists' attention with the small signs. When the company was acquired by Philip Morris, the signs were discontinued on advice of the company’s legal counsel.

Previously there were only two to four sets of signs per year. 1930 saw major growth in the company, and 19 sets of signs were produced. The writers recycled a previous joke. They continued to ridicule the "old" style of shaving. And they began to appeal to the wives as well:

But that isn't the problem. I reviewed your paperwork, and it looks like you had two requests. First, repair the ice maker. And second, cover the floor damage. That may have confused Whirlpool, which is accustomed to handling claims one at a time.

There's a takeaway for the rest of us here. When you file a claim or complain to a company, stick to one problem at a time. A list of issues may cause a delay. In your situation, it created a one-year delay. I imagine someone at Whirlpool put the claim in a file with the intention of getting back to you, but never did.

To get things moving again, I recommend a brief, polite email sent to one of the executive contacts at Whirlpool. I publish the names, numbers and emails of the Whirlpool managers on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org.

How to replace — and avoid — a damaged passport

A small tear in his passport stopped Martin Betch from boarding his recent flight from Barcelona to Geneva. An airline representative told him he had a damaged passport.

Betch pushed back. Shouldn’t the airline accept his passport if it could read his name and see his photo? No, she said. A rip — even a small one — voided his entire passport.

“My passport was exposed to wear and tear during the pandemic, and I neglected to check it before leaving,” remembers Betch, a Swiss photographer who lives in Spain. “I had to file for a reissue and wait three weeks before booking another flight.”

His problem is becoming more common. Many travelers’ passports have been unused during the pandemic. If they’ve been damaged, chances are they might not be valid. Worse, you may not find out about it until you get to the airport or border.

What constitutes damage vs. normal wear and tear? Does a bend or fold in your passport mean it’s invalid? And what should you do if it is?

The State Department says if your passport is severely damaged, you’ll have to apply for a replacement. Damage “includes water damage, a significant tear, unofficial markings on the data page, missing visa pages (torn out), a hole punch, or other injuries.”

“A passport is damaged by anything that changes the integrity or composition of the passport,” says Rachel Arndt, deputy assistant secretary for passport services.

Normal wear and tear includes bends in your passport from travel, according to the State Department.

“The State Department distinguishes between immaterial and material damage,” Arndt said in an email. “Immaterial damage, such as ordinary wear and tear, a telephone number written on a visa page, or a small tear on a visa page, doesn’t materially change the integrity or composition of the passport. Material damage impairs the integrity or composition of the book, such as the removal of visa pages, obliteration of the photograph, or separation of the cover.”

What do I do if I have a damaged passport?

If your trip hasn’t started yet, you’ll need to go to the nearest passport acceptance facility — usually a post office or public library — or a passport agency.

The process is similar to applying for a new passport. You’ll need a signed statement explaining the damage, and you’ll have to fill out a new application, called a Form DS-11. The State Department also requires that you show evidence of your citizenship, such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate, and that you provide photocopies of the evidence. You’ll need to present your ID and a photocopy of your ID, as well as a passport photo, and you’ll have to pay the applicable fee — $130 for adults, plus a $35 execution fee.

What happens if I’m traveling with a damaged passport?

How do customs officials determine whether your passport is damaged? Ganga Raj Thapa has seen the process hundreds of times. At most borders, an official will examine your passport under direct light for signs of damage or mutilation.

“They look for perforations, looseleaf pages, false entries and blank spaces,” says Thapa, who runs the adventure travel company Nepal Hiking Team. “If signs of mutilation are detected, the passport is turned over to an office of investigations for further analysis.”

If the damage is severe enough, a

country might deny you entry. But you might also be able to negotiate your way through customs if the damage is minor.

Gyan Penrose-Kafka remembers a trip in Central America. The outside of his passport had become frayed in the hot, humid weather and from storing his ID in a money belt.

“The edge of that plastic film delaminated from the paper ever so slightly,” recalls Penrose-Kafka, a business analyst from Seminole, Fla. “I was denied entry into Nicaragua.”

But he couldn’t turn around and return to Honduras, because his visa was no longer valid. After some negotiation, he paid a $20 “fee” to the Honduran border agent to enter the country.

If you don’t want to risk negotiations, you can (and probably should) apply for an emergency passport through the nearest U.S. Consulate or Embassy. The process is similar to the replacement process in the United States, but you can typically get your passport faster. You’ll need to appear in person to get your replacement passport. You can make an appointment online, which will allow you to avoid a lengthy wait.

Can I repair a damaged passport?

Can you try to repair the damage to a passport yourself, like with tape or glue? No, Arndt says. Under federal law, it’s invalid as soon as it’s materially changed. “An attempt to repair it would not restore its validity,” she says.

The good news: If you haven’t used your passport in a while, you’re probably fine.

“It’s rare that just sitting in a drawer would cause damage,” says John Rose, chief risk and security officer for Altour, a travel management company. What if your passport gets wet? A small amount of water shouldn’t harm a passport because of its polycarbonate coating. But if you don’t dry it out, the passport could become mildewed, which would void it.

Tears and cuts in a passport are a “serious issue,” he adds.

How do I avoid a damaged passport?

You can avoid the trouble of replacing your passport by storing it properly.

Find a safe place away from liquids, children and pets. When you’re traveling, keep your passport in a secure compartment in your luggage. If you’re going on a beach vacation or scuba diving, consider putting your passport in a waterproof bag.

The solution, of course, is to get rid of paper passports. Ukraine has created a digital passport that can be read from a smartphone. Several countries, including Australia, New Zealand and Canada, are testing

digital passports that use biometric data to verify your identity at the border. You can’t damage an electronic passport.

Despite the fact that she was fully aware and willing to surrender her life in the ordeal.

And in time, Adolf Hitler, indeed, did invite his idol, Greta Garbo, to visit Germany as his special guest.

As a close acquaintance of Sweden’s Monarchy, Greta Garbo visited her close personal friend, Gustav V, the King of Sweden, and urged him, convinced him – as a great personal favour – to grant asylum to over 8,000 Jews who were trapped in Nazi occupied Denmark.

And the official declassified documents reveal that the lives of 95% of the Denmark Jewish population was saved from certain death . . . all because of Garbo’s efficacious intervention (where all others had failed, miserably).

And if this were still not enough, consider the following.

The Great Garbo also implored her longstanding friend, the king of Sweden, to use his powerful influence to help obtain the release of nuclear physicist, Niels Bohr – her olde personal friend –also a Jew in Denmark, who was now in immediate danger.

Why, so suddenly, was Bohr in great danger?

U. S. and British intelligence reports had reached Bohr and his brother, Harald, that the Nazis now considered Bohr’s family to be Jewish (since their mother was Jewish). This meant that they were now in danger of being arrested.

With Greta Garbo’s urging, the king of Sweden agreed with her pleas and took top secret action, working with a network of U. S. and foreign intelligence.

The Danish Resistance also help nuclear physicist Niels Bohr and his wife escape by sea from Nazi-occupied Denmark on 29 September 1943. Then both escaped to Sweden, then the U. K. and onward to the United States.

banking and commercial transactions face to face with people who lived in our town or neighborhood. We trusted the bankers, realtors and shopkeepers we dealt with because we shared a community and reputations were common knowledge. There were no strangers.

Then Internet became a common means of transacting commerce and local banks, supermarkets and department stores became local operations of multinational corporations. Customer contact services migrated to low labor cost countries on the other side of the planet. Everyone was a stranger and we completely lost that feeling of community and personal contact. The generations that grew up in the modern era where personal contact in commerce is uncommon never missed it, but we do. We seniors long for that lost feeling of friendship and trust once common in our day to day commercial relationships. It’s a vulnerability often exploited in attacks on seniors by scammers.

The Internet does a wonderful job of keeping us close to our families and friends whether just across town or scattered around the globe. It is also a source of nearly all human knowledge and allows us to nourish our curious natures at will. The positive impact of the Internet and how it has changed and enhanced our lives in many good ways is a fact, but there are negatives. One of the negatives is the fact that the Internet also serves as a vehicle for International criminal

Caught in time, the financial losses can usually be eventually recovered, but the emotional anguish and damage to one’s self image can be devastating.

The saddest side of this heartless criminal activity is that it targets the best aspects of our humanity. It can exploit our predisposition for friendliness, trust, honesty and desire to be helpful. They turn the best assets of our human nature into

weapons with which to rob us. This leaves us feeling betrayed and stupid. When it involves financial loss, we feel guilty in having made our spouse or family suffer as a result of our own foolishness. It can happen to anyone.

Next week, the subject of part two in this series will be how to avoid falling into this type of criminal exploit without losing your humanity. You don’t need to become a squinty-eyed, paranoid, antiInternet freakazoid in order to avoid becoming a victim. We’ll show you how to avoid being scammed and still remain your sweet, loveable, friendly, trusting self.

There are lots of advantages to adopting a senior pet:

At County of San Diego Department of Animal Services, the adoption fee for a cat or dog is $35 for senior citizens 60 or older. No fee for a senior person adopting a pet five or older.

The adoption fee for cats or dogs seven years or older is only $30 at San Diego Humane Society.

Please consider adopting a senior pet. They have so much to give and it’s an honor to earn their love.
