"Call me Ishmael."
I was hooked from the moment I read that first line of Moby Dick, anxious to see where the adventure would take me. Herman Melville did not disappoint. He masterfully wove a web of words to draw me in, and then he trapped and held me. He kept me captive as Ishmael took me through the sights and sounds of his journey. His were the adventures of a young man forever drawn to the magical pull of the sea. As he innocently boards the whale ship, Pequod, to begin a three year adventure at sea, he is unaware of what lay ahead, and he becomes an unwilling voyeur. phantom demons in his mad quest to find and kill, Moby Dick.
At one time or another in our lives we may all be plagued by an obsession. Chasing our own demons. For some it will be socially acceptable, like cars, wine, or jewelry. Yet, for others it may be alcohol, drugs or quiet indiscretions. For those, like Captain Ahab, you may be called a maniac. Labeled utterly mad. His lifelong obsession was the albino whale, Moby Dick, immortalized for all time by Herman Melville.
Melville was born in New York City, New York, on August 1, 1819. The son of Allan and Maria Gansevoort Melville, he was the third of eight children. He became a well known and popular American novelist, the writer of short stories and a
poet. By the time he turned 30, Melville had written five books, including two best sellers.
He studied surveying at the Landingsburgh Academy hoping to land a job building on the Erie Canal Project. In 1839, barely out of his teens, Melville boarded the ship St. Lawrence in New York City, where he worked as a cabin boy while traveling across the Atlantic Ocean to Liverpool. That trip became the spark which ignited his flame for adventure. Two years later, in 1841, he worked on the whaler 'Acushnet' and set out for the Pacific Ocean. The ship landed in the Polynesian Islands, where he lived among the cannibalistic Typee people for several months in 1842.
A Whale’s Tale Continued on Page 2
It was aboard ship that he learned and understood just how terrifying and powerful a 70 foot sperm whale could be. The lower jaws of full grown whales have a total of 52 teeth the size of Bowie knives. Even though the occasional fluke dwarfs only grow to the size of a mini-van, 16-20 feet in length, they are still capable of splintering a boat to pieces. A full size sperm whale can weigh 40-50 tons, approximately as much as eight large African elephants, and grow to an average length of 60-70 feet. Their enormous size alone would strike fear in average fishermen and whalers, yet, they are very timid. Gentle giants for the most part. After sailing the oceans for four years, collecting a lifetime of adventures, Melville left the sea to begin his literary journey. In 1846, his first book 'Typee' was released and was

an instant success. It became a bestseller and Melville became one of America's most beloved adventure writers. The book was based on his true life experiences, including the time he spent living with and his escape from Polynesian cannibals. Of course, it was a highly fictionalized account of the actual events. His second book, 'Omoo' (1847) was an instant hit as well, detailing his adventures while on another whaling journey, where Melville took part in a mutiny and landed in a Tahitian jail. He later easily escaped. Melville heard a lot of seafaring yarns regarding whales while aboard ship. These were the ultimate in fish stories; telling tall tales about the one that got away, or about the beast who ate boats with one swipe of their massive jaws. Two such horror stories were told to Melville on more than one occasion and by more than one sailor. Those stories struck a chord, fueling his writer's imagination.
The first of these tall tales occurred in November 1820, aboard the whaler 'Essex', captained by George Pollard Jr. It was said that Pollard and his

The Value of Ribs
Nothing like a good Bible story to make your day.
Adam was hanging around the garden of Eden feeling very lonely.
So, God asked him, "What's wrong with you?"
Adam said he didn't have anyone to talk to.
God said that He was going to make Adam a companion and that it would be a woman.
He said, "This pretty lady will gather food for you, she will cook for you, and when you discover clothing, she will wash it for you. She will always agree with every decision you make and she will not nag you, and
crew were out in the Pacific Ocean, 2,000 miles from shore, when an 85 foot sperm whale attacked, crashing headfirst into the side of the ship, knocking the captain and the crew to their knees. They could hear the heart stopping cracking, as the wood gave way. The 'Essex' was leaking; the wood of the hold was cracked and splintered, yet, repairable. Then the mammoth whale returned, snapping his fierce jaws as he plowed headfirst into the bow once more. The ship was lost. He had torn through the waves picking up speed. When he crashed into the Essex again, the ship was damaged beyond repair, taking in water before she slowly slipped beneath the waves.
Aboard three whaleboats, his crew drifted for 95 days in the South Pacific. Pollard and his crew were lost to the sea. The sun was relentless and the sea water had contaminated the stash of bread. With no food or water, they survived by drinking their own urine and eating their deceased shipmates, including Pollard's 17 year old cousin. When an American whaler discovered the small whaleboat, there was only Pollard and one other survivor on board. The rest had been eaten. Those events haunted Pollard for the

She will bear your children, and never ask you to get up in the middle of the night to take care of them. She will NEVER have a headache and will freely give you love and passion whenever you need it."
Adam asked God, "What will a woman like this cost?" God replied, "An arm and a leg."
Then Adam asked, "What can I get for a rib?"
Of course the rest is history! ••••• The Washington Post has published the winning submissions to its yearly contest, in which readers are asked to supply alternate meanings for common words. And the winners are:

After he finished Moby Dick, Melville went to visit Pollard, who 60 at the time was kept unaware of the book during their short visit. The final scene of his novel had secretly been based on the sinking of the Essex. It was important for Melville to meet Pollard, because he had been the inspiration for Captain Ahab, one of the most famous literary characters of all time.
The second such story to impact Melville was the story of Mocha Dick. Numerous sailors told him the tale of a vicious whale that attacked more than 100 seagoing vessels, sending at least 20 ships to the bottom of the ocean. The tales told of how the mighty whale carried rusting harpoons buried deep in his back, serving as a grisly reminder of the men who died in their attempt to slay him. According to legend, Mocha Dick attacked an American ship in 1838, after its sailors killed a mother whale and her calf. Infuriated, Mocha destroyed one of the whaleboats, but not before he was harpooned in the back. Although he dove, dragging the sailor under, he had received a mortal blow. he resurfaced, the sea ran red. He was spewing blood from his blow hole. His last breath showered the surviving sailors in his blood. By combining the two stories ten years later, Melville wrote his masterpiece, Moby Dick, attempting to immortalize Mocha Dick.
The most well known story written by Melville was not his most critically acclaimed by the critics. He wrote Moby Dick and was ruined. His writing career was over. All of his books were rollicking yarns, fast paced, fun and easy to read. At the height of his career he was writing a novel a year. By 1849, Melville started his 6th novel: Moby Dick. It began as all his other novels. A fun filled romp on the high seas. Before he finished the novel, he moved to Pittsfield, Massachusetts, where he met Nathaniel Hawthorne. The two became fast friends. Melville worshipped Hawthorne and hung on his every word. It was at Hawthorne's insistence that Melville rewrite Moby Dick from a happy go lucky farce, into the dark, twisted monster

An old man and woman were married for many years. Whenever there was a confrontation, yelling could be heard deep into the night. The old man would shout, "When I die, I will dig my way up and out of the grave and come back and haunt you for the rest of your life!"
Neighbors feared him. The old man liked the fact that he was feared. To everyone's relief, he died of a heart attack when he was 98. His wife had a closed casket at the funeral.
After the burial, her neighbours, concerned for her safety, asked, "Aren't you afraid that he may indeed be able to dig his way out of the grave and haunt you for the rest of your life?"
The wife said, "Let him dig! I had him buried upside down, And I know he won't ask for directions." ••••• Perks of reaching 50 or being over 60 and heading towards 70! 1. Kidnappers are not very interested in you.

piece it became.
As Hawthorne urged him on, and Melville agreed, he spent the next year re-writing the novel. After sending the manuscript to his publisher in 1851, Melville wrote to Hawthorne, "I have written a wicked book and feel spotless as a lamb."
The book was released, yet, not well received. The critics' reviews were brutal. The New York United States Magazine as well as the Democratic Review charged Melville with crimes against the English language. The London Literary Gazette said the story of Moby Dick made his readers wish Melville and the whale were both at the bottom of the sea.
The poor reception wasn't entirely due to Melville's manuscript. The British first edition accidentally omitted the epilogue. Not wishing to offend the delicate the political and moral sensibilities of the readers, the publisher also decided to omit 35 crucial passages. Deleting them from the book altogether. Combining those two factors and weighing that in, with the fact his readers expected a wildly frolicking ocean adventure, but what he delivered to them was deemed to be a 635 page brick of dark philosophical matter. The ranting of a lunatic. There were only 3,715 copies of Moby Dick sold in Melville's lifetime. As his popularity plummeted so did his bank account. In a correspondence to Hawthorne after his completion of the novel, and the critical reviews that followed, Melville is quoted as saying, "What I feel most moved to write, that is banned, it will not pay. Yet, altogether, write the other way, I cannot."
Within a year, Hawthorne stopped writing back. Ceasing all contact with Melville. Their friendship had dissolved. In 1863, Melville returned to New York City, where he took a job as a customs inspector. He held the job for the rest of his life and quietly wrote poetry in his spare time. The alcoholic author sank into a deep depression in 1867, after his oldest son committed suicide.
On the eve of Melville's 100th birthday, in 1919, Raymond Weaver, a Columbia graduate student was given the assignment of writing a tribute to Herman Melville, for 'The Nation.' He soon came to realize there wasn't a great deal of information out there pertaining to the author. He found information in public records regarding, Melville's nine nov-
els, his plethora of short stories and poems, but nothing about the man.
His literary resume is as follows: Typee (1846), Omoo (1847), Mardi (1849), Redburn (1849), White-Jacket (1850), Moby Dick (1851), Pierre (1852), Bartleby the Scrivner (short story 1853), Israel Potter (1855), Benito Cereno (short story 1855), and The Confidence Man (1857). Weaver searched for everything he could find about Melville. Two years later he had completed Herman Melville's biography. While doing his research for the biography, Weaver contacted Melville's granddaughter. She told him she had found a yellowing manuscript in a bread tin. It was the unpublished novella...Billy Budd, one of his most well known and well loved narratives. This discovery recharged an interest in Melville. After its discovery, Weaver had the manuscript published in 1924.
The timing was perfect. When the academics in 1920 rediscovered Moby Dick, they saw it for what it was. It defied genre, with universal themes, iconoclastic ideas, artful and colorful prose, and rich symbolism. Literary critics finally understood why Moby Dick had been so poorly received initially--it was 70 years ahead of its time. By the 1930's Melville had become king of the American literary canon. His work influenced the likes of William Faulkner, who had hung a print of Captain Ahab in his living room. Ernest Hemingway said, "Melville is the literary genius to beat."
Moby Dick inspired a countless array of authors, including, Norman Mailer, Ray Bradbury, Jack Kerouac, Cormac McCarthy, Albert Camus and Robert Pirsig.
The story has been adapted into stage plays numerous times and to film on six occasions. The most well known cinematic release was the 1956 version, and starred Gregory Peck as Captain Ahab. It was a visual masterpiece directed by John Houston, who also cowrote the screenplay with Ray Bradbury. The movie was rereleased in 1976, a year after Jaws made its debut. The movie poster was great. All it said was...'Before the Shark there was the Whale.'
We see and hear references to this Melville classic all over. Paying homage to Ahab's first mate, Starbucks coined its name after the immortal tome. Led Zeppelin released the instrumental song "Moby Dick" in 1969. Marvel comics released Moby Dick Premiere
in hardcover in 2008, and in 1964, the Flintstones cartoons had Fred and Barney on a fishing adventure with the mighty whale, Adobe Dick. Many others have also all paid tribute to the mighty Moby Dick. The cultural footprint is deep.
Melville, never wavered in his belief that his critics would warm up to his work, it would just take time. As he edited Moby Dick in 1850, he said, "It is better to fail in originality, than to succeed in imitation. He who has never failed somewhere, that man cannot be great."
D.H. Lawrence called Moby Dick, "One of the strangest and most wonderful books in the world." The Confidence Man, published in 1857. It was the last of Melville's novels published in his lifetime. Although, Herman Melville completed his manuscript of Billy Budd in April of 1891, just five months before his death on September 28, 1891, in New York City. It was not published until after its discovery, 33 years after his death. To produce a mighty book, you must choose a mighty theme. No great and enduring volume can be written on the flea, though many there be that have tried it. Herman Melville

It is one man's plan to make a boatload of money. His November ballot initiative (Proposition H) is not a winwin for the locals or the Greater Escondido area, so I stand firmly with the opponents of this self-serving piece of legislation. The Country Club issue is not just about the needs or concerns of the locals, it is equally important to understand how the parts of a city contribute to it's whole. Mr. Schlesinger's 'vision' would forever change the face of Northwest Escondido, making it much more urban and stripping it of it's iconic identity of bold rock formations, large stands of eucalyptus and pine trees, and abundant wildlife. Then, former San Marcos City Councilmember Hal Martin got him interested in the San Marcos Boys and Girls Club. Kiley stood up on a stage with $500 cash and announced that was a matching grant. That, too, grew until at one time the Boys and Girls Club of San Marcos was drawing in $2700 every year. All because of a generous donation initiated by Jim Kiley.

Computer crime: A growing threat to public safety
Computer crimes are a growing threat in our technologically dependent society. Consumers rightfully fear hackers who can assume their identities and gain access to bank and credit card accounts, stealing billions each year. Unfortunately, the vulnerability of emergency and other government computer systems which impact the safety and welfare of millions is often overlooked.
Last year, the Los Angeles Times reported that a caller threatened to paralyze a San Diego hospital by shutting down the hospital’s phone service if a dispatcher didn’t submit to his extortion demands. A short time later, the ER’s six phone lines were silenced. For nearly 48 hours, ambulance services and patients’ families calling the hospital received con-
the clothes after the lunch by Hibachi Buffet, 16785 Bernardo Center Drive. Cost is $20/person. For more information and to RSVP, call Lynne at 858.487.3513. All proceeds will benefit Sustaining the Mind: Scientific Research and Scholarship Fund of Brandeis University, Waltham, MA.
“Gala in the Garden” – On Saturday, September 6, from 59:30pm the San Diego Botanic Garden will hold their 15th Annual “Gala in the Garden.” The theme will be “Right in Our Own Backyard” and this year’s honored guest will be Eric Larson, Executive Director of the San Diego County Farm Bureau. Mr. Larson is being recognized for his valuable and important work in San Diego County’s agricultural industry and his leadership of the Farm Bureau, Carlsbad Municipal Water District, San Diego County Water Authority, Carlsbad City Council, and the Encino Wastewater Authority. Eric’s efforts to forward the growth of agriculture in San Diego County align with San Diego Botaic Garden’s mission to inspire people of all ages to connect with plants and nature. He has been recognized and won many awards for his significant contributions. The Gala is the Garden’s largest annual fundraiser. Guests can explore the garden trails, enjoy wine, craft beer, and the best dishes from local restaurants; there will be live entertainment and lavish floral designs created by a team of local floral designers, led by Gala Artist Director, Rene van Rems. stant busy signals. The suspect had simply generated enough calls to tie up the phone lines using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology.
In response to this incident, I introduced AB 1649, which expands the California Comprehensive Computer Data Act to combat this growing threat. The bill updates current legal definitions to include modern technology, clarifies that denial of service attacks are a species of computer hacking, and includes governmental computer systems, including public safety infrastructure systems operated by hospitals, emergency services and public utility companies. I am happy to report that AB 1649 passed the Assembly with unanimous support on May 5. The bill has been forwarded to the Senate, where prospects for final legislative approval appear to be bright.

In our increasingly politically correct and bifurcated world, it seems the human instinct to pass judgment on people or events has only grown more acute. And, with that judgment, the punishment meted is often out of proportion—and possibly wrongly targeted-- to the actual event, not to mention seldom without the facts being known or contemplated. The things that trigger this response of outrage and anger are as varied as the human experience allows.

efit. In most cases, including the marriage of Victoria and Albert, the marriages were arranged often without the two principles ever knowing or even meeting one another.
The nine Victorian children, (in order of birth), Victoria, Albert Edward (King Edward VII), Alice, Alfred, Helena, Louise, Arthur, Leopold, and Beatrice, had children, many of whom were responsible for igniting a powder keg that would plunge the world into what was deemed “The War to End All Wars.”
This is not to say that, in the case of racially or ethnicallycharged incidents especially, people should merely accept the initial “official” version of events.

The War of the Victorian Cousins
Following and understanding the history of Britain’s Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, their nine children, 20 grandsons and 22 granddaughters, is daunting at best.
The marriages of the nine Victorian children created their own “United Nations.” Up until the early part of the 20th century, royalty throughout Europe married off their sons and daughters to each other thinking it was a safe and prudent way to provide important alliances for diplomatic, military, economic, and social ben-
The Victorian cousins ended up ruling Germany, Russia, Norway, Greece, Romania, Spain, and of course, Great Britain. Victoria’s and Albert’s first child, Princess Victoria, was married to Prussia’s (Germany) Crown Prince Frederick. From that marriage, Queen Victoria’s first grandchild became the future German Emperor, Wilhelm II, the leading bad guy in WWI.
Prince Albert Edward, who, upon Victoria’s death, became King Edward VII, married Denmark’s Princess Alexandra. From that union came Britain’s future King

threats against the officer involved, and national protests against police brutality. Within days, however, details surrounding the shooting have made the events surrounding the incident anything but clear cut.
Donald Sterling seems to be everyone’s favorite sports mogul to hate. After all, he uttered the dreaded “Nword”—albeit privately—and for that reason, he can no longer own an NBA franchise. The concern other owners expressed over the relative severity of the punishment, and whether they could be similarly dealt with for unspecified transgressions was similarly demonized. The response was instant, and it was harsh. I wonder who among us, in private reflection, can say they have never made a bigoted statement toward any other person or group in private conversation? If we are honest with ourselves, I would say virtually no one has. Not right, perhaps, but reality. None of this makes these reactions—and countless other, similar circumstances—right or wrong. But thorough review of facts paints a very different picture than what too many of
Measure G — The Charter City proposal
The official arguments for and against the City Charter (on the ballot it will be Measure G) are now posted on the City website. I thought I’d take a look at the City’s arguments in favor of becoming a Charter City (italicized) and see what I think.
Voting YES to make Escondido a Charter city, empowers our citizens to take control of our city, protect taxpayers, and prevent Sacramento from wasting our tax dollars. A Charter does not give the citizens one iota more control, but it does give the City Council much more power. And since it takes only three members to make a change, that means more power concentrated into the hands of a few.
After careful study, the City Council voted to ask our residents to choose to become a charter city subject to our state Constitution’s “home rule” provisions. These provisions are based on the concept that resi-
us react to, or remember. Rushing to judgment seldom ensures a dispassionate or righteous outcome.
There has been a lot of talk in the past few years about “teachable moments.” I think the phraseology is wrong. Most parents and school teachers will tell you that it isn’t what you teach that is important or meaningful to the student. It is what they learn. I wish we would learn something from these events.
dents of a city, rather than state legislators, best know their city’s needs. As a charter city, power over city matters is transferred from the state to our residents through their elected representatives.
I am curious to know when this “careful study” occurred. When the Charter went on the ballot back in 2012, it was done in a rush. If you look at the meeting when it was approved for the ballot, it is one of confusion, with Councilmembers arguing over what should be in the Charter up until the last moment. That Charter was defeated. Given a second chance, the Mayor and City Council majority chose to work with that same basic charter, without the input of a Citizen’s Commission. When pressed on that decision, Mayor Abed said that having a Citizen’s Commission would “…lead to a different charter than the City Council majority wants.” Since this Mayor and Council Majority had no interest in giving the residents the opportunity to help create the Charter, why should we believe they would give the residents more power once it was in place? Councilman Gallo went one step further, saying that the Council “…could have approved it ourselves. But we chose to do what I consider the right thing and left it to the voters to decide.” By law, the Charter had to go to the voters, so Councilman Gallo did us no favor by allowing that to happen, it is our right.
Sacramento politicians have confiscated city resources to pay for the billion-dollar deficits they’ve created, while creating unfunded mandates on our local government. State lawmakers have imposed numerous statutes governing uncharted cities which reflect the values of a majority in the legislature, not necessarily a majority in Escondido, which is the reason that more than one-half of the state’s population has chosen to adopt charters for their cities. The members of the California legislature are not some foreign beings. They are all duly elected representative of the people, including Assemblywoman Waldron who used to be on our City Council.

The “city resources” that are referred to means money like the redevelopment funds that have been taken away from ALL California cities. Charter cities were NOT exempt and had their funds lost just like all the rest — charter status did not protect them then and would not protect them in the future if a similar situation arose. (As to how many California cities choose to have charter status, they still account for less than 25% of all cities in the State.) The charter: Transfers power away from Sacramento, into the hands of Escondido residents-where it belongs This Charter will put power into the hands of the City Council majority (three people) not the residents.
Saves millions in tax dollars, requiring competitive bidding for services and ensure fair and open competition for all public projects There is absolutely nothing in this charter that will save “millions in tax dollars.” In fact, because Charter cities can find themselves in court arguing whether an activity is a “municipal affair” governed by the City or a ‘statewide concern” governed by State, there is more likelihood of money being spent on legal battles.

Prohibits City councilmembers from unilaterally raising their own salaries.
State law already keeps the City Council from raising their salaries above proscribed limits; the Charter follows that same law so is totally unnecessary. Keeps your tax dollars local, by protecting city revenues from diversion by the state.
Again, if the State diverts funds, it does so to all cities, Charter and General Law. ALL cities had redevelopment dollars seized; Charters were not exempt. If the State decides at any time that certain revenues are a “statewide concern” they will be taken regardless of a city’s status. Preserves all existing anti-corruption laws, ensuring open, honest government.
Anti-corruption laws are a part of State law. We do not need a Charter to maintain statutes that are already in place.
Voters in Carlsbad, Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, Del Mar, Santee, and San Diego have chosen to become Charter cities. Now it’s our turn. By joining these cities and the majority of

Escondido city planning professionals, in 1963, made important and well-informed decisions about how the Northwest part of town was to be developed. They collaborated with the developer to create a balanced and attractive community that would add to the overall ambience of the growing Escondido area. They knew exactly what they were doing. They had a 'vision' and it wasn't to carpet the area with high density, wall-to-wall mobile home sized houses! By using the California initiative process, which was never intended to be used as a planning tool for major home developments, Michael Schlesinger will legislatively dodge all of the standard community improvement requirements that any other builder would normally have to mitigate in exchange for the right to proceed. He won't have to build schools, fire stations, playgrounds or dog parks; he won't have to improve the on ramps that will be overwhelmed by hundreds of new cars every morning. He won't have to upgrade sewer treatment plants, replace older storm drains or protect large areas of environmentally sensitive wetlands. Should he win this battle, Mr. Schlesinger will have achieved the perfect formula for flipping property: buy extremely low, minimize capital improvements, and maximize your ROI.
So I say, the ballot issue is really about trust. Do the citizens of Escondido trust one man's self-serving vision more than they trust the decisions of the elected professionals who set the course for Northwest Escondido back in 1963? The same Planning decisions that were recently reinforced when the Escondido City Council unanimously adopted the Citizens Property Rights Initiative to keep the rural greenbelt in place. Voting No on the Lakes Specific Plan will stop one man from getting a 'carte blanche' building permit to make a 25,000% return on his investment while permanently dis-
figuring the face of the community and contributing virtually nothing to it.
Certainly, lots of strategic mistakes have been made by all parties, but the one mistake the voters of Escondido can still avoid is handing the proverbial 'steering wheel' over to one man who has no experience building massive housing tracts, one man who knows little or nothing about the history or demographics of Escondido, one man who has shown no concerns about the collateral damage his project would have and someone who made no effort to collaborate with anyone on his plans. It would be a colossal mistake to trust this riverboat gambler who is arrogant enough to think that he, and he alone, has the best interests of our neighborhood at heart. /s/Rick Elkin Escondido, CA.

There are so many times in our harried lives when we fail to stop long enough to simply tell someone, "Thank you, you're doing a great job." Whether it's a formal "thank you" card or note, telling the person lets them know they did something that affected you in a positive way.
A special thanks also, to Nami Taghipour and Reza Safarpour of Escondido Pharmacy. These guys are great! I was experiencing a problem with one of the larger chain pharmacies, which shall remain nameless. They kept billing my prescription and refills to either the wrong insurance company or not at all, expecting me to pay retail of all things! In one of my more lucid moments of frustration I went into the Escondido Pharmacy and I swear I could hear harps play and angels sing. I was in heaven. My gosh what a difference! I can't say it enough...they are wonderful. The pharmacy is clean and well organized, with a friendly, professional and knowledgeable staff. Reza is my go to guy if I have questions. He has known the answer to all of my questions and if he's not sure, rather than give me any misinformation, he does the research. When you go there, you never feel as though you are being processed, you feel as though you are part of their family. I have watched them work their special kind of magic, calming distraught folks who came in
to get a prescription filled for either themselves or a very ill family member. I want someone I have confidence in and know, to take care of my prescriptions. I transferred all of mine to them. My thanks to you both. /s/Claudia Aragon Escondido, CA

George V, (the grandfather of present-day Queen Elizabeth II). Also, their daughter, Maud, became queen of Norway.
Princess Alice married Louis the IV, Grand Duke of Hesse (a small duchy in Germany). They had two sons and five daughters, one of whom became Russia’s Czarina Alexandra. She married Czar Nicholas II, whom, along with their family, were overthrown during the 1917 Bolshevik revolution.
The storied career of Mountbatten, youngest son of Princess Victoria and Louis Battenberg IV, is a book in itself. As Britain’s Admiral of the Fleet, “Dickie” Mountbatten was the WWII Supreme Allied Commander of the Southeast Asia forces, and was the last Viceroy of India. Louie was the favorite uncle and mentor of present-day Prince Charles. Mountbatten was the uncle of Prince Phillip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II. (Prince Phillip and Queen Elizabeth II are third cousins). (Note: During World War I, Britain’s royal family changed their name from “Battenberg” to the less-German name of “Windsor.” The Royal families of Europe were a maze of Victoria’s descendants. What was designed to be marriages of convenience, ensuring mutual benefit ended in a horrific World War. That tinderbox was ignited with the July 1914 assassination of Austria’s Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife in Sarajevo, Bosnia.
The assassin was a Serbian. The Kingdom of Serbia was an ally of Russia; Bosnia was in the Austrian-Hungary Empire, an ally of Germany. This diplomatic mess set off a crisis causing Austria-Hungary to give Serbia an “or else” ultimatum, which invoked the series of royal alliances. Within a month the First World War began.
During World War I, the primary royal heads-of-state were Queen Victoria’s grandchildren: Britain’s King George V, who was allied with France, as well as his cousin, Russia’s Czarina Alexandra. Those three nations formed the “Allied Forces.” On the other side, Cousin Wilhelm II, the Kaiser of the German Empire, was allied with Kaiser Franz Josef of the Austria-Hungary Empire, as well as the Ottoman Empire (Turkey, and what today is Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Syria), forming the “Central Powers.” The war ripped Europe apart with only Britain’s monarchy sur-

Her family is being forced to rehome her because their landlord–who knew that they had a GSD–recently found out that his home insurance policy does not cover German Shepherds. So, he’s told Hanna’s family “the dog has to go ASAP” !
Hanna is super-friendly with adults and kids of all ages; her former owner had a 3-yo son that she was great with. She is fine w/other dogs when off-leash, and good w/little dogs (she currently lives w/a Chihuahua). She is reactive towards other dogs when on leash, which is quite common w/GSDs. Hanna does not do well with cats. Hanna is very much a house-dog. She will get very anxious if left outside when her people are home. Her people also leave her inside when they are gone, and Hanna does just fine. Hanna is in good health for a 10yo GSD. She does have some mild arthritis in her hips, which is to be expected w/ a GSD Hanna’s age, and does not limit her activity. Ambulance/fire truck sirens do not bother her.

Handling Temptation
Temptation is not easy Author Oscar Wilde wrote, "I can resist everything, except temptation."A 5 year old was told to stay out of the cookie jar on the kitchen counter. The mom was sitting in the living room when she heard a kitchen chair going across the floor towards the counter. She shouted what are you doing? The boy yelled, "I’m fighting temptation." A survey was done a few years ago and found Americans struggle with things like worry, procrastination, eating too much, laziness, spending, gossip, pornography, alcohol, drugs, etc.
3) Don’t entertain the temptation - A businessman decided that it was time to lose weight. He took his new diet seriously, even changing his driving route to avoid his favorite bakery. One morning, however he arrived at work carrying a big gigantic coffee cake. "This is a very special coffee cake," he explained. "I accidentally drove by the bakery this morning and there in the window were lots of warm goodies. I felt this wasn’t an accident so I prayed, `Lord if you want me to have one of those coffee cakes, let me find a parking place in front of the bakery. And on the 14th time around the block – He did.’ 4) Know God’s Word. Jesus overcame temptation by knowing the scripture. Get into a church where you can learn what God says and how to apply it. San Marcos • Mayor Jim Desmond Highway 78 Cities select regional organization to promote North County
For more than two years, the cities of Carlsbad, Escondido, Oceanside, San Marcos and Vista have been working together as an informal regional collaborative to support economic development along the Highway 78 Corridor. On July 8, San Marcos formally joined the four other Highway 78 Corridor cities in selecting the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation (San Diego Regional EDC) to implement a new regional branding campaign over the next two years that will sup-
port business retention and development efforts by the five cities.
Overall, the regional effort recognizes that the cities – acting to create a North County identity first and as individual city’s second – is one of the best incentives that can be offered to businesses to locate and grow within the corridor. Cooperation among the five cities will convey to businesses both locally and out of the area that the Highway 78 Corridor is a great place to do business in San Diego County. To learn more about the City’s economic development efforts, contact Economic Development Program Manager Julie Magee at jmagee@san-marcos.net.

Becoming a Charter City should not be about jumping on the bandwagon. While San Diego has been a Charter City for 125 years, many other have done so very recently, with Oceanside adopting theirs in 2010. That we will be considering a charter of just four pages that was modeled after those of other cities — rather than created by and for the residents of Escondido — should be a cause for concern. With songs spanning moods of jazz, indie, hints of rap, R&B, rock and neosoul, their music captivates audiences with their own unique sound that’s complex yet catchy and cutting-edge. Taylor’s albums “Hello” and “Wonderland” were nominated for San Diego Music Awards in 2012 and 2013 in the Best Jazz Album category. Doors for this performance open at 11:30 pm and it is open seating. Additional performances in this concert series include: September 18th: Dapper Dixie (Dixieland Jazz) and October 16th: SWARMIUS (Jazz Fusion). This Charter does not put more power into the hands of the residents, it puts more power into the hands of the Council Majority. This Charter does not protect the taxpayers, it opens us up to more lawsuits, more legal fees and more money spent every time the Charter needs amending. The proponents of the Charter have not shown me any significant benefits to becoming a Charter city and the risks are many. So unless someone comes up with an impressive argument for why we need THIS Charter NOW, I will be saying NO to the Charter, NO to Measure G. Editor’s Note: This is a reprint

By 1995 Netscape had become the browser of choice for 90% of PC users. Then Microsoft purchased IE (Internet Explorer) from Spyglass Inc, bundled it into their latest OS (operating system) Windows 95 and made it available as a free download. Being embedded in the world’s most popular OS gave Microsoft’s IE a fantastic advantage over Netscape and by 2004 IE claimed 92% of the browser market while Netscape had virtually disappeared. Over the next several years new competition began to erode IE’s dominance and by 2011 IE held barely 50% with Firefox (30%) and Google (15%) gaining ground. By the end of 2010 Windows 7 had been out for over a year but still trailed Windows XP in market share as satisfied XP users continued to resist change. Microsoft’s marketing geniuses decided they could use the popularity of the IE browser to force XP users to upgrade to Win 7 by releasing a new version of IE (IE 9.0) that would not support XP. They released IE 9.0 in March of 2011 with the announcement that it did not support XP. Google immediately announced that its browser (Chrome) would continue to support XP indefinitely. olic and insulting. I was angry after reading his letter, and just wanted to correct what I felt was misinformation, but the anger showed through as well. I didn't want to match Kent's anger with more anger. I think people are too angry about politics.
I am a life long Republican (though I am very much a moderate and am socially liberal, though not a Libertarian either), but I feel the propaganda and lies are out of hand on both sides. The leftwing media was overly harsh on Bush, and now the rightwing media is creating fabricated scandals as well. They feed on public anger, and create more anger using misinformation. If there isn't a real scandal to capitalize on, they create fake scandals, and people like Kent (and the leftwing equivalent) fall prey to their tactics. Anyway, thanks for the complimentary response and for the soapbox that is your paper. The Paper is small enough to stay unbiased and factual; it's about the actual news.
