Afghanistan: CUT LOSSES

by Michael Yon Most people likely wish to hear that everything will turn out right in Afghanistan. The reality is that it will not end well.

This bastard war will have a thousand fathers and nobody will claim it.

In 2009, I wrote, “If a writer wants to make money, he should avoid truth and tell people what they want to hear. Yet to win the war, tell the truth.”

Since 2006, at minimum, the AfPak war on the whole has been going down. Only in 2010 did I see some flicker of hope for a change of direction. In my view, that flicker has been snuffed. And writing truthfully about Afghanistan will never pay the bills, because I have nothing to say that people want to hear. It is just bad news atop more bad news.

Our continued losses in Afghanistan are for nothing. We should continue with a smaller presence to harass and kill terrorists, and losses from that are expected and part of the fight. But the ongoing larger war is going nowhere.

We have been there since 2001. This is 2012. There is no vaguely discernible end. We should look at Afghanistan as a century-long project, to be put on a far backburner.

Time to Leave Afghanistan This war is going to turn out badly. We are wasting lives and resources while the United States decays and other threats emerge. We led the horse to water.

Importantly, there is no value in pretending that Pakistan is an ally. We should wish the best of luck to the Afghans, and the many peaceful Pakistanis, and accelerate our withdrawal of our main battle force. The enemies will never beat us in Afghanistan. Force on force, the Taliban are weak by comparison. Yet this is their home. There is only so much we can do at this extreme cost for the many good Afghan people. We must reduce our main effort and concentrate on other matters.

Time to come home.

We are at that defining element where the political will may force the military hand and it all unravels with tears before bed time. I hope I am wrong, I have seen too many boys come home to see this recorded as a wasted effort.

I cannot pass judgement on the overall success or failure of our Western effort in Afghanistan. If the goal was to punish and kill AQ members and deny them sanctuary, it seems to have been done. If the goal was to create a Central Asia version of Texas, well, that can never happen.

On further reflection I realized that this can only work in a rule of law market. The Talis will just kill farmers who sell to the West and the rest will go back to selling to the Talis.

It's a wacked out part of the world, I am saddened by the children who, through no fault of their own, are stuck in that place. Remember the horse and water: some people just cannot be helped. And with Pakistan next door just as riven with ancient hatreds, this problem cannot be "solved" in a few generations.

••• I could not agree more and have been saying the same thing for months. I just don't understand why we are there. As a retired Air Force combat veteran with a son who has had four tours, I think it is time to come home.

••• There may be 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover...but there's only one way to leave Afghanistan: Load everything and everyone American on the trucks and LEAVE NOW! ••• Pull conventional forces back to the Forward Operating Bases (FOB’s), and consolidate to the bases that will be required to project force into Pakistan and Iran.

Evict all Afghans from them, so that they can no longer collect intelligence on coalition forces and engage in so-called "green on blue" attacks. Use the FOBs to support Special Operations Forces (SOF). Keep enough arty (artillery) to maintain good range fans. Keep enough helicopters and fixed-wing to support SOF with an "embarrassment of riches." They should have tactical air on-call at all times.

If SOF wishes to continue to train their dedicated commando units, and to go tear-assing around the country killing Talibs and Al Queda and drug dealers, then support that.

Afghanistan should replace the Republic of Pinelandia and Robin Sage should become a live-fire capstone exercise. Let Afghanistan revert to a Rod

and Gun Club for SOF. But the priority should be targets in Iran and Pakistan.

We should no longer prioritize the creation of Afghan military and police units. Too many of the Afghans that would staff such units are illiterate, their loyalties are to tribes, not to a nation-state, and such units too often degenerate into muscle for warlords. Better to train them and to make them loyal to SOF as hired guns. We should recognize that our idealism is not realistic. We cannot "nation-build." It is a bad theory.

The most important thing that can be done for modern Afghanistan is the removal of the Karzai clan, all of it, from the country. Their stolen assets in Dubai and elsewhere should be frozen and seized. They should be prosecuted, all of them, for theft from America.

Then a systematic cleansing and purge of all corrupt political actors in Afghanistan should be executed. If this leaves a vacuum, so be it. Somebody will fill it. If they are corrupt, we should purge them, too. We should continue cleansing until a Darwinian process of evolution finally produces strong, honorable leaders that can lead Afghanistan into the 21st century.

Support them, but within limits, and never losing sight of the fact that we retain forces in Afghanistan purely to project power into Pakistan and Iran.

This, at least, would be an honest endeavor.

••• Full agreement on the Karzai clan, but leaving any forces in Afghanistan -- even under a clear-eyed, hard-nosed policy of SOF training ground & Central Asian Power Projection hub -- is impractical; what Central Asian nations would continue to allow us their airspace & rail for transit & logistics if we openly declare such? If we decide we need to pressure Pakistan, the way to do so is via India & the Indian Ocean. Even so, better to leave that to the Indians.

••• What you describe is basically whats planned to happen. Most of the conventional forces are pulling out this year and into next. Most will be gone by 2014. SOF is already pulling

together and consolidating and will be here long after all the others have left. The next ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) 4-star commander is supposed to be a Marine, so that's a huge tell.

Due to congressional limitations I'm told the Army may have to give up a 4-star to make room.

Time will tell. I just surprised Michael (Yon) seems to discount the SOF affect post-conventional. It was successful coming in.

In principle, though, I might agree. As I watch the Afghans every day, watching what is their priority, who are their friends, how do they define an enemy, etc. This country will not catch up to the 19th century for another couple hundred years and will revert back at least 100 the moment we turn control of security over.

••• Take the gloves off, and we could have the whole thing wrapped up in three weeks.

Since we aren't going to do that I have to agree that it's time to go.

We should have re-written their entire constitution like we did in post-WWII Japan, instead of letting the Afghans elect "Taliban-lite." We should have cleaned out the Taliban safe-haven in Pakistan, instead of letting the Pakistanis pretend like they are our allies and "take care of the Warzistan problem" for us. We should have used ROE that put the lives of our troops above the lives of the enemy, instead of twisting ourselves in doublejointed pretzels to adhere to conventions that our enemy wasn't even a signatory to.

Unfortunately, in war it's the side who makes the least mistakes that wins.

••• Mike, I have worked in Afghanistan as a contractor twice. Once at a FOB and once at a megabase. You are completely correct. We are throwing good money after bad which is secondary to the loss of even one of America's valiant warriors. That country only knows the pain of history and it is satisfied with it. We need to leave the horse at the well.

••• Personally I don't recall one not ending badly. I'm from the Nam era. We lose for the most basic reasons. Politicians, Military Brass riding a desk at

the Pentagon, the liberal news media, and most of all, the American public who actually pays to support wars that kill our soldiers because we don't know how to win. We care more about our reputation in front of our enemy. I always believed that the ones who have the best and smartest atitude when it comes to war and fighting to win is Israel. They take no S*** from anyone except our stupid politicians in Washington. The name of the game is to get in with everything and get out with least ammount of casualties. We do not need to make a career or be the beta test team for contractors when it comes to dealing with any enemy in the 21st century. Drop a small Nuke and it would be the last time anyone would think about threatening this country. History needs to repeat itself except we have a bunch of weak people running this country. Never had these problems in the 30's 40'or 50's ask your parents or grand parents. We are a doomed nation and our enemies think we are weak and to caring! Thank your liberal neighbors for this.

••• The 'regular army" should have gotten out of the way of SF and let SF prosecute this conflict. It would have turned out differently here and in Iraq.

••• Hadrian is recognized as one of the greatest emperors of Rome because he pulled back the empire to defensible boundaries and build walls and fortifications. You could also arguably cite the British withdrawal from Afghanistan a century ago. You could also argue about the American revolution.

Although the British lost the colonies, it led (for many reasons) to the heighth of the British Empire.

Withdrawing from Vietnam didn't hurt American power in the long run, nor did the loss of bases in the Philippines.

Page 4 - August 30, 2012 Election Fraud?

You don’t normally see hotly contested races at the school board level . . . but that is what appears to be brewing in the race for the Escondido Union School District.

Two candidates are running to represent District One, which no trustee represents this year. Jose Fragozo, a past candidate, parent and electronic technician who frequently attends board meetings, is running against parent Joe Bologna.

District One is in the center of the city and has a population that is about 79 percent Latino.

Local political watchdog, patent attorney, and activist, Robroy Fawcett, pointed out to the County Registrar of Voters that Mr. Fragozo’s candidate statement contains errors and should be corrected before going on the ballot and that this should be done by the Registrar rather than going to court.

Mr. Fawcett alleges that

Mr. Fawcett argues the error is self evident within the sentence. The EUSD and the EUHSD are different districts, and the EUSD does not form an ICOC to oversee the bond funds of the EUHSD.

Fawcett argues, “this sentence appears to suggest an endorsement, rather than a statement of qualifications, and includes a statement of knowledge, "all know," that is speculative and cannot be proven, when it is likely that most "teachers, staff, and parents" do not even know Mr. Fragozo.”

Mr. Fragozo said he stands by his statement; he served while his son was a student at Rincon and he also says he is a member of the EUHSD committee as well.

Man About Town Does anyone else talk to their dogs? I do. When we go for a walk I talk to them just as though they were human.

••••• As I write this, I’m having my typical breakfast of oatmeal with blueberries, raspberries, almonds and yogurt.

Seeing and eating the blueberries reminds me of a rather ironic visit to Alabama. We were guests of the Travel Media Writer's Organization.

All expenses paid, very, very posh hotel. We went to breakfast and I ordered oatmeal with blueberries. When the bowl arrived I counted the blueberries. Both of them.

When Evelyn fixes oatmeal she puts, probably 12-15 blueberries on top of the oatmeal, about 8-10 raspberries. And I got two blueberries. At a posh hotel restaurant. And was probably charged $8-$10

Escondido Police Announce New Curfew Hours With the new school year being upon us, the Escondido Police Department reminds all parents and children about the change in curfew time for the city of Escondido. As of July 22, 2012, the curfew times of the city of Escondido are between 10:00 pm and 5:00 am.

The purpose of the curfew ordinance is to ensure the juveniles in our community are not out after certain hours of the day when they can become victimized or can get into trouble. The purpose of the curfew law is not to be zero tolerant and arrest every juvenile who is out after 10:00 pm.

••••• We all had a bit of a scare last night, particularly Trixie.

About 11pm, Evelyn had taken her out for her night time potty break and she had just finished going pee-pee when there was a flash off to the right. Trixie headed straight for the door, pulling Evelyn along on the leash.

Evelyn saw something belt across the yard but couldn't make out what it was. She had not taken a flashlight as she normally does. Evelyn brought Trixie in and Trixie commenced to barking furiously. We also noticed she was quivering.

She was scared.

That's why Trixie never goes out unless she's on a leash.

Coyotes are quick and deadly.

She has satisfied us that she is not out for Chief of Police Jim Maher’s scalp. Her problem is not with him, she says; she just thinks there is a more cost effective means of using saturation patrols rather than the large manpower requirements needed for checkpoints. She may have a point.

We hope her fellow councilmembers will listen to her arguments and weigh them.

A bit of a firebrand when first elected, she has learned the gentle art of diplomacy and is able to discuss issues reasonably and calmly. Her professional training gives her analytical talents and she communicates her ideas and arguments effectively.

She listens, she works hard, she thinks creatively. While considered a political Liberal, we find her to be a fiscal conservative, keeping a close eye on the taxpayer’s dollar.

Olga Diaz deserves your vote for a second term on the Escondido City Council.

Labor Day Rally Set in Escondido Supporters of organized labor and working families will rally and march in Escondido on Labor Day, Monday, September 3. A rally is scheduled to begin at 11am in front of Escondido City Hall, 201 N. Broadway at Valley Parkway.

Speakers will include Escondido Councilmember Olga Diaz and a representative of organized labor.

Participants are encouraged to bring signs celebrating the dignity of work, working families, and the contributions of organized labor. Following the rally, participants will march through downtown Escondido. Groups participating include the San Diego & Imperial Counties Labor Council, the ACLU of San Diego, Occupy Escondido, and the Escondido Democratic Club. The police department will be doing curfew sweeps routinely in an effort to reduce the amount of curfew related crimes. One aspect of the sweeps will be to educate the community on the new curfew hours.

Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) along with the Escondido Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit cited one store clerk for selling alcohol to a minor on Thursday, Aug 23rd. The action was the result of a minor decoy operation in which minors under the direct supervision of department agents attempted to purchase alcohol from 11 retail licensees in the city of Escondido.

The clerk, employed by the Snack & Bottle Shop located in the 700 Block of East Valley Pkwy., who sold to the minor faces a minimum fine of $250, and/or 24 to 32 hours of community service for a first violation. In addition, ABC will take administrative action against the alcoholic beverage license of the business where alcohol was sold to a minor. That may include a fine, a suspension of the license, or the permanent revocation of the license.

ABC is conducting the compliance checks statewide to reduce the availability of alcohol to minors. Statistics have shown that young people

Left… Difficult areas to clean – Almost all studies show that the most difficult area to clean is your lower right back teeth if you’re right handed, and your lower left back teeth if you’re left handed … so spend a little more time there. Most toothbrushing brochures suggest brushing your front teeth first, which is the area of your mouth “least” likely to accumulate plaque. You should start in the areas of greatest risk. Simply changing your toothbrushing pattern will increase your effectiveness.

Escondido • Mayor Sam Abed Grand Opening of Maple Street Pedestrian Plaza The City off Escondido will hold a grand opening celebration of the Maple Street Pedestrian Plaza on Friday, September 7, 2012. A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Plaza, located on Maple Street between Grand Avenue and Valley Parkway. There also will be musical entertainment by the Platte River Band, as well as the crowning of Dick and Anne Lievers as the King and Queen of the Grape Day Festival which will be held the next day, September 8 at Grape Day Park.

The Maple Street Pedestrian Plaza offers a destination for people of all ages to sit and

relax, visit local businesses or engage with members of the community in a vibrant public space. The street has been constructed as a “festival street,” with a single, one-way lane from south to north, with no curbs or on-street parking. Through the use of removable bollards, the street can be closed to car traffic for special events making the block a people place.

The project also features decorative paving, distinctive landscaping and artwork, dramatic LED lighting, interactive water feature, and two large gateway structures at each end of the project. Great improvements are coming our way! At the request of the cities of Oceanside and Carlsbad, SANDAG recently agreed to assume the lead in advancing the environmental document for the restoration of Buena Vista Lagoon, which is located along the borders of Oceanside, Carlsbad and the I-5.

This project is vital to enhancing and restoring approximately 200 acres of wetland habitat, and SANDAG estimates that it will cost approximately $1 million to complete the environmental document for the restoration effort.

How to “Want” What You “Need” There is often a compromise between what we want and what we need. Our houses, cars and vacations would probably be much different if suddenly we won the lottery. So it is to a lesser extent with computers.

A high school student needs access to a computer to survive.

For schoolwork they only “need” a PC that can use the Internet and compose homework. Most any desktop PC with XP and MS Office will fill that. We have gobs of good used PCs ranging in price from $175 to $275. It’s a good idea to allow a teen have his/her own personal computer if possible. PC sharing can cause family tensions.

Sacramento Spending Spree

A recent article in the Sacramento Bee highlighted the view shared by the majority party that the state has made significant budget cuts and "spending (today) is 11% below California’s prerecession peak." However, a closer examination indicates that spending is actually on the rise.

Total spending is projected to increase by 6%, from $135.1 billion last year to $142.6 billion this year. The 2012-13 budget adopted in June also grows state General Fund expenditures from $87.0 billion to $91.3 billion, a nearly 5% increase.

To make matters worse, in the last two weeks, the Legislature passed bills that

will add billions in new spending. For example, 358 bills passed out of the fiscal committees of both houses that will cost taxpayers an estimated $2.3 billion!

In addition to direct state spending increases, the fiscal committees passed a number of bills that would have facilitated increased local taxes.

These measures eroded constitutional provisions protecting citizens through reduction of the vote threshold needed to impose new taxes. Thankfully, I joined with a number of my fiscally conservative colleagues to keep these measures from reaching the Governor’s desk. Richard H. Garhartt, Sr. March 16, 1932 July 18, 2012 Richard died peacefully in his sleep. He had battled back from heart valve replacement, bladder cancer, and multiple strokes, which took what was left of his vision, after macular degeneration.

Born in Albany, New York, to Leigh and Carrie.

Preceeded in death by his wife of 49 years, Olga.

Survived by daughter, Grace Hayse, of Escondido; sons, Richard Garhartt, Jr. of Oceanside; Michael Garhartt, of San Diego, and Douglas Garhartt, of San Clemente, CA. He has ten grandchildren.

He retired from the Navy after 20 years of service.

Later, he worked in the Phone Company as an Auto Mechanic for 15 years.

He was a loving husband, a great father and a patriot.

Richard held several different part time jobs. He was a model for DuBrule Hairpieces, a security guard for celebrities performing in town, he guarded property for Pardee Homes. He was in the first group of Mira Mesa volunteers (RSVP), a volunteer group that checks on seniors and people away on vacation. When he wasn't working he loved hunting and fishing. He was the cook of the family and there was always room for one more at his table.

The family wishes to most gratefully thank the staff of “Eagle’s Nest,” (Board and Care home) for their loving care of Richard. May God bless you all.

Services to be held at Fort Rosecrans in San Diego, September 4th at 11:00 AM. Both Richard and Olga will be interred with military honors.

Olga Garhartt February 14, 1936 June 14, 1994 Born in Ajo, Arizona, daughter of Maria and Erasmo Valenzuela. She died from Lymphoma Cancer, five years after having had a heart transplant.

She was the first of two women to ever complete police FBI training in the city of San Diego. She was a revolver expert and a black belt in judo, karate and aikido. She worked at the Navy Exchange at Miramar Naval Air Station as store security.

She had to leave that job when her heart problems developed.

She managed her son, Michael’s rock band, “Kaos.”

She did a bit part in a comedy movie with Rich Little, well known impersonator of the 1960’s, in which she played a drunk.

She was the 58th recipient of a heart transplant and the first diabetic to receive a transplant. She was also written about in a book, “Into the Light,” dealing with neardeath experiences. Following the publication of this book she was quoted in the San Diego Tribune as saying she was no longer afraid of death.

It was beautiful.

She is survived by daughter, Grace Hayse, of Escondido; sons, Richard Garhartt, Jr. of Oceanside; Michael Garhartt, of San Diego, and Douglas Garhartt, of San Clemente, CA. She has ten grandchildren.

She will be re-interred with her late husband, Richard H. Garhartt on September 4th at 11:00 AM, at Fort Rosecrans, California. Arrangements by California Funeral Alternatives, Escondido.

Advice From a Retired Married Man It is important for men to remember that, as women grow older, it becomes harder for them to maintain the same quality of housekeeping as when they were younger. When you notice this, try not to yell at them. Some are oversensitive, and there's nothing worse than an oversensitive woman.

Let me relate how I handled the situation with my wife. When I retired a few years ago, it became necessary for my wife to get a full-time job, along with her part-time job, both for extra income and for the health benefits that we needed. Shortly after she started working, I noticed she was beginning to show her age. I usually get home from the golf club about the same time she gets home from work.

Although she knows how hungry I am, she almost always says she has to rest for half an hour or so before she starts dinner. I don't yell at her. Instead, I tell her to take her time and just wake me when she gets dinner on the table. I generally have lunch in the Men's Grill at the club, so eating out is not reasonable. I'm ready for some homecooked grub when I hit that door. She used to do the dishes as soon as we finished eating.

But now it's not unusual for them to sit on the table for several hours after dinner.

I do what I can by diplomatically reminding her several times each evening that they won't clean themselves. I know she really appreciates this, as it does seem to motivate her to get them done before she goes to bed.

Another symptom of aging is complaining I think; for example, she will say that it is difficult for her to find time to pay the monthly bills during her lunch hour. But, Boys, we take 'em for better or worse, so I just smile and offer encouragement. I tell her to stretch it out over two, or even three days. That way, she won't have to rush so much. I also remind her that missing lunch completely now and then wouldn't hurt her any (if you know what I mean). I like to think tact is one of my strong points.

break when she was only halffinished mowing the lawn . I try not to make a scene. I'm a fair man. I tell her to fix herself a nice, big, cold glass of freshly squeezed lemonade and just sit for a while. And, as long as she is making one for herself, she may as well make one for me, too.

I know that I probably look like a saint in the way I support my wife. I'm not saying that showing this much consideration is easy. Many men will find it difficult. Some will find it impossible! Nobody knows better than I do how frustrating women get as they get older. However, Guys, even if you just use a little more tact and less criticism of your aging wife because of this article, I will consider that writing it was well worthwhile. After all, we are put on this earth to help each other.
