by lyle e davis Winter in Omaha, Nebraska, can be mighty mean. Cold, blustery, temperatures so low your toes and fingers go numb as well as your nose and any other part of your exposed body. There was one winter in particular at Bishop Clarkson Hospital, back in Omaha, Nebraska. Bishop Clarkson Hospital has since merged with and become part of the Nebraska Medical Center. Back a few years ago, actually, more than a few years ago, there were two young lads, both patients, in the same hospital room at that very same Bishop Clarkson Hospital. They became great friends. A young white kid, maybe 12 years old, was in for an appen-

dectomy. The other patient was a young Indian boy, about the same age, simply known as “Little Joe.” Joe was in for examination and evaluation for a condition that was causing great distress for the boy but that doctors had a hard time diagnosing. The young white boy had his family come and visit him regularly both pre-op and post-op. His family always tried to include Little Joe in the visits and it seemed to cheer him up some. Little Joe’s family didn’t get in to see him much. Little Joe wasn’t in for surgery. He was in for tests. He was a handsome kid . . . with a beautiful set of teeth. And when he flashed a smile, his brown eyes would sparkle and those perfectly formed teeth, against that warm brown skin, just stood out like a beautiful oil painting. But Little Joe didn’t smile as
often as everyone would like. He was hurting, and when he hurt . . . well, he didn’t smile a whole lot. When the pain would go away the white kid and the Indian kid would talk like young kids do. They’d talk about their dreams, their wishes, their hopes. When Joe wasn’t hurting they’d laugh and play games. Often, he’d have to go out in the hospital’s deep, dark laboratories and exam rooms from time to time to take more and more tests to see if they could find out what was causing his pain. When he came back, he usually wasn’t smiling. The tests were not easy, some were, in fact, painful. Back then, Omaha had a skid row area, down between 13th and 16th streets, not all that far from the Mighty Missouri river. Today, the river district and the
neighborhood that used to house a lot of Omaha’s derelicts has been built into a beautiful commerical district with lovely boutique shops and restaurants galore. A great entertainment venue. But back then, it was a skid row, home to a lot of Indians who lived down there. Mostly, it was Indians who were down on their luck, or who had drinking problems, which was a prevalent problem within the Indian communities that were in and around Omaha. It was probably a good 16, maybe 20 city blocks from the skid row area up to the Bishop Clarkson Hospital. A long, cold walk, particularly in the winter time, with the cold temperatures and sharp winds coming in off the plains . . . winds that would cut through your clothing like a knife.

Page 2 - December 20, 2012 ‘A Christmas Story’ Cont. from Page 1 One Christmas eve, an old man left that skid row area and began the long walk from where he lived. He was headed for the Bishop Clarkson Hospital. Somewhere between the wretched area where he lived and the hospital, he came across a Christmas tree lot. He stopped and looked around, talked to the salesman who was manning the lot and who saw fewer and fewer customers for his trees the closer they got to Christmas Eve. The old man didn’t have a whole lot of money but spoke to the Christmas tree salesman and after a brief discussion, the saleman gave the old man a rather scrawny little tree. He refused payment and wished the old man a Merry Christms. The old man continued his walk, carrying his scrawny little Christmas tree. After what seemed like hours of plodding through the snow swept streets, he entered the lobby of the Bishop Clarkson Hospital, inquired as to a room number and took the elevator up. Little Joe had had a rather rough day of tests and wasn’t

This week, a compendium of wit, wisdom and neat stuff you can tell at parties. Enjoy! Pub Crawling I was in a bar last Saturday night, and drank a few, and noticed two very large women by the bar. They both had pretty strong accents, so I asked, "Hey, are you two ladies from Ireland ?" One of them chirped saying, "It's WALES, you blinkin' idiot!" So, I immediately apologized and said, "I'm sorry. Are you two whales from Ireland ?" That’s all I remember.
feeling very well. As the old man entered the room, however, Little Joe’s eyes lit up. His family had come to see him! Or what was left of his family. And with a Christmas tree! True, it wasn’t much of a Christmas tree, kind of a scrawny little thing, but to Joey it was probably the most beautiful tree he had seen in ages. The Old Man was Little Joe’s dad. He wasn’t really all that old. He just looked old because he kinda walked with a stooped over back . . . probably from working heavy labor jobs at the Union Pacific railroad, in the cornfields of Nebraska’s farms, or wherever he could find work. The hard work had taken its toll on this once powerful body. There clearly was a great bond between Little Joe and his dad. Joe couldn’t stop smiling and chattering away. The Old Man just smiled quietly and stroked his son’s hair. We learned that Little Joe’s mom had died several years earlier. It was just Little Joe and his dad against the world. They were making it, too. Not exactly living high on the hog or getting rich . . . but they were carving out a life for themselves, as best they could.
••••• Because I want to wish you all a happy and most importantly safe Holiday season, I would like to share a personal experience with my closest friends about drinking and driving. As you well know, some of us have been known to have had brushes with the authorities on our way home from the occasional social session especially during the Holidays. A couple of nights ago I was out for an evening with friends, and had a couple of cocktails and some rather good beer. Knowing full well I may have been slightly over the limit, I did something I've never done before. I took a cab home. And wouldn't you just know it - on the way home I passed a police road block but, since it was a cab, they waved it past. I arrived home safely and without incident - which was a real surprise because I have never driven a cab before and am not sure where I got it or what to do with it now that it's in my garage.
And then Joey got sick. He had terrible stomach aches, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, chills, and then the symptoms would settle down. They’d go away, maybe for days. Sometimes they’d just come . . . and then go . . . sometimes they’d leave because Joey had medication to dull the pain. As the symptoms became more constant, the pain more unbearable, it was time for Joey to head to the hospital for tests to find out what his medical problems were. The white kid’s parents arrived and were determined to cheer their son up for Christmas. They wanted to try and make his Christmas, even while in the hospital, a joyous event. They had brought some gifts and they had even remembered Joey, bringing him several gifts. Joey’s eyes lit up at the gifts as well, all wrapped up, looking Christmas lovely. The Old Man thanked the parents and soon that hospital room began to get a mighty warm feeling. There were smiles and laughter. Several of the nurses on the floor heard about the tree and pretty soon, strips of crepe paper appeared, red, white, green, all were brought in and

hung on the scrawny Christmas tree. The nurses already spoiled the two young patients rotten . . . but since it was Christmas Eve and they had to work anyway, they decided to do all they could to help these two kids have a somewhat Merry Christmas and, who knows? Maybe that happy feeling might be shared by the nurses. There have been mightier and more magnificent celebrations of Christmas on Christmas Eve, people singing hymns in mighty cathedrals all over the world, lots of rich kids and their families opening presents and enjoying the Christmas season. But it’s hard to imagine anyone enjoying Christmas Eve more than these two young kids, and their families, all spending Christmas Eve in the room and the halls of Bishop Clarkson Hospital. In time, Little Joey’s dad had to leave and the white kid’s parents offered to drive him home. He accepted quietly and gratefully. Little Joey had to fight back the tears when his dad left. He wasn’t sure how soon his dad could make it back to the hospital for another visit. Indeed, the next day, Christmas

‘A Christmas Story’ Cont. from Page 2 Day, the white kid’s parents did return to spend Christmas with their ailing, but recuperating young lad. And they tried to help Little Joey enjoy Christmas as well. But Joey wasn’t feeling well that Christmas Day. He was polite and tried to smile but mostly he slept, or tried to . . . and he wanted to keep to himself. The nurses would scurry in and out and check his pulse and temp and whatever it is nurses do to 12 year old lads who are hospitalized. Joey was always cooperative, even if he had to have a shot or to have blood drawn. He was a rather good patient and the nurses were clearly fond of him. That night, after the parents left, the two lads talked, but not a whole lot. They did talk about what they were gonna do the first day when they got out of the hospital, what their pals were probably doing tonight, what school would be like once Christmas vacation was over. And then they fell asleep. The next morning the white kid awoke. He turned to greet his roomate and bid him good morning. He froze. Joey wasn’t there and his bed clothes were all rolled up. Something wasn’t right. The nurse came in with his breakfast and his medications. The kid looked at the nurse with a questioning look and saw a tear in her eyes. “Where’s Little Joey?” he asked, though he probably already knew the answer. “Little Joey passed away early this morning,” she said, and she didn’t try to hide the tears that flowed, nor the tremor in her voice. The 12 year old buried his face in his pillow and screamed, “No! Not Little Joey! He was my pal. We were just talking last night! He can’t be gone. He’s just a kid, like me!” I can remember this Christmas memory as though it happened yesterday. You see, I was the little 12 year old white kid.
An Apology and a Commentary by lyle e davis
For those of you who tried to reach The Paper by phone for the past several weeks, our apologies. You received a Voice Mail recording that said words to the effect that “this account has not yet set up a Voice Mail Program and is unable to accept voice mail messages.” As a prologue to this commentary, we suggest you, as a consumer, be very wary of dealing with either AT&T or Cox Communications when it comes to service issues and changing of service. It can well develop into a nightmare similar to that which we experienced. This was the latest scenario in what became a nightmarish event that lasted some six weeks before we had full telephone service restored. In the meantime, valuable and important voicemails were lost. If we did not return your calls, or if you were unable to reach us, here are the reasons behind this debacle. On Novembe 3rd, we purchased two new Samsung Galaxie III cell phones from AT&T. We are very happy with them. However, while at AT&T, we were talked into purchasing two wireless units, one for the home and one for the office. Our sales representative showed the relay stations that would allow us to go wireless, but said that we would need to switch our service provider from Cox Communications to AT&T. He assured us that all you have to do is plug that unit into the back of your phone, and after 4 or 5 days the “porting” would be complete and he assured us everything would work perfectly and we would live happily ever after. He was mistaken. We took the equipment home and Evelyn plugged in the units as the instruction book indicated and we waited the 4 or 5 days, and then we waited another 3 weeks. Finally, Lyle decided we needed some help and on
December 2nd he brought in a long time friend, a former telephone specialist with PacBell, to check the installation and contact AT&T to see why the porting had not been done. He contacted AT&T technical services that dealt with “porting” over the service from Cox to AT&T. They assured us it would be a matter of four to five days before the porting would be complete; we should continue to call every day or two to find out the status. Meanwhile, we could continue to use Cox service until the changeover occurred, although we were only able to call out; could not receive calls. We were assigned WorkOrder #65532092, and told within four to five working days we would have the phone numbers ported over from Cox to AT&T. During that week we were assured that our system would be in order as of midnight Sunday, December 10. But during that week also we were only able to ‘call out’ on our phones; could not answer the phones because they didn’t ring when someone tried to call us. On Monday morning, December 10, Evelyn made another one of her many phone calls to AT&T porting service department and explained the story to a very sympathetic lady in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and told her we are unhooking all the equipment and returning it to the store where it was purchased. When she heard of our problems with both the portable phones and the credit card machines, she stated that was correct, “They should never have sold you that equipment. It is not compatible with auxiliary equipment (which is what a credit card machine is). Give me the name and phone number of the store where you purchased the equipment and I will call them to make arrangements for you to return the equipment and they should work with you. Also, do not take the equipment back to the store until your phones are back in working condition. I’m terribly sorry for this inconvenience. That equipment is not what you need.” On December 11th, we again contacted Cox via their chat line. After talking to a service
tech and getting nowhere, Evelyn asked to speak to a Supervisor (Richard). At that time we were told our service would be operable on Thursday, December 13th. Evelyn asked why we couldn’t have it operational immediately. She was told “the technician will need to access your home address in order to activate the service from the outside pole.” Not true! They said we were scheduled for Monday, December 17th. Evelyn said that was unacceptable. So they said they would put us on standby as we had to have a technician come to our home and office and make sure the phones were working correctly; standby was set for Thursday, and Friday, but we were scheduled for sure for Monday. Also on Tuesday, we were told we had to have the extra days to “port” the numbers back from AT&T, and the porting times are 4 to 5 days, that’s why Monday was the scheduled day. Evelyn had to again give all the information necessary to have the numbers “ported” back, and answer questions through a “third party” servicer. They explained that was a “government law” that had to be done any time phone numbers are changed from one company to another – Evelyn said even though we have just waited 5 weeks to get these numbers “ported” over from Cox to AT&T? Then, as it turns out, they only took information for one of the phone numbers and during the conversation, the phones went dead! No one from Cox showed up on either Thursday or Friday, nor did they call to advise of any delays. (Eventually we found someone at Cox who knew what to do to restore our service, but it took another day of waiting, and did NOT require access to our home or outside pole. One wonders how well trained these “supervisors” are). Meantime, we were only able to take or make phone calls via our cellphones. Our regular phones were inoperable, as was our incoming Voice Mail. ‘Apology/Commentary’ Cont. on Page 7

He declined to give me contact information for the Cox Legal Department. I had a hard time understanding (a) why a Supervisor would refuse to give their last name, and (b) why a Supervisor would not be familiar with and/or have a copy of the legal document he cited as a reason for not providing contracted service, and (c) why he refused to give me a contact person or phone number to reach the Cox Legal Department. We finally contacted Cox Customer Service and told them how unhappy we were at the treatment we received.

A very helpful and sympathetic lady, Ceanne Guerrera, referred us to a Cox Senior Service Representative named Sylvia Dunbar. She was able to restore 95% of our service within about 10 minutes of our phone call. She has become our heroine. The only problem we have now is that Evelyn’s home phone number rings on the office phones, and the office phone number rings on Evelyn’s home phones. Don’t know if that is our only problem at this time or not – that was what the service call was supposed to take care of today (Monday), however, no one ever showed up or called. But we can make calls and receive calls, albeit on the wrong phones. Summary: (a) While most of our dealings with Cox Communications over the past 10+ years have been pleasant, prompt, and efficient, this was one of the biggest breakdowns we had seen or experienced. In contrast, while researching and living out this mess, we heard from user after user that AT&T was terrible at providing service after the sale. From what we’ve experienced, these anecdotal stories are pretty close to the mark. AT&T sales personnel were quite pleasant (though we were misinformed about the product), the service techs are polite on the phone, but they dropped the ball, big time. While Cox is not blameless in this episode, given their frequent supplying of incorrect information, incorrect dates of job completion, and supplying questionable legal “requirements” as well as lack of Supervisorial knowledge, we believe the bulk of this problem falls at the feet of AT&T. We tried to contact AT&T’s Public Affairs Office to give them a chance to tell their side of this story. Alice, one of the Service Techs, said “no‘Apology/Commentary’ Cont. on Page 10

Since our account had finally been transferred/ported over to Cox, apparently our case was a “closed file.” (b) If you should have a similar problem, we suggest you immediately ask for a supervisor. They can often do what a service tech cannot. Also, keep the name and telephone number of everyone you talk to in case you have to document your complaint. (c) If the supervisor can’t solve your problem, take it to Customer Service. In our case, we asked to be connected to the Public Affairs Department of Cox Communcations. It’s there where we got immediate action. Was that because we are a newspaper and they wanted to avoid any negative publicity? I suspect that is part of it. One ought not to have to own a newspaper in order to get what needs to be done, done. AT&T and/or Cox are invited to submit Letters to the Editor or statements outlining their comments. We’d welcome their explanation as to how this could have happened. Meantime, give us a call. Our phones are working.
Rita is an elegant lady in great health and beautiful eyes. She is about 2 1/2 years old and 13 pounds. Rita has a great time playing with the other doggies or curling up and being an extra armrest at TV time. She walks perfectly on her leash and gets along with other pets. And is an expert at “fetch” and return! We believe she may be a Rat Terrier blend but has no interest in jumping and is rather moderate energy. She would do great with a family or just adults. Like all our pups Rita is spayed and microchipped. Her 5 way vaccines and rabies are all up to date. She comes with a full 4 piece safety equipment set, food for her transition and any favorite toys or bedding. For more photographs please view her on our website as well as all the other pups in our rescue that need forever homes or a foster family. He enjoys rolling in the grass, head scratches and short games of toss. He looks forward to gentle walks in the mornings and evenings, and then he is content to hang out on his fluffy bed. He is accepting and friendly toward other dogs, so he might not mind having a canine companion in his new home. Lincoln is available for adoption from the Escondido Humane Society, 3450 E. Escondido • Mayor Sam Abed Escondido Chosen as Overall Start for Prestigious Bike Race
America’s premier cycling event, the Amgen Tour of California, is a Tour de France-style cycling road race presented by AEG that challenges the world’s top professional cycling teams to compete along a demanding course. Escondido was fortunate to host the finish of the 2009 Tour and it was a highlight in our city’s history. Tens of thousands of people enjoyed watching the race along the route and finish line in our downtown business district, wildly cheering on the cyclists. The enthusiastic reception the cyclists received from the com-
munity was extraordinary and created a lot of favorable media commentary and coverage. So it is with great pleasure that we welcomed the news that Escondido has been selected to serve as the Overall Start of the eight-day race that will begin on May 12, 2013. The Amgen Tour of California is a unique opportunity to bring together not only our community, but the entire San Diego County region, for a thrilling day of world-class cycling while showcasing all that Escondido has to offer. If you would like more information about this event, or how you can be a sponsor or volunteer, please visit www.amgen2013escondido.com or contact Michelle Geller at 760-8394587 or mgeller@escondido.org

Vista • Mayor Judy Ritter Vista Fire is urging residents to be careful if they are displaying Christmas trees. Even trees treated to be flame-retardant are capable of burning explosively and spreading fire through a home quickly. • Look for freshness with cut trees. The needles should be difficult to pull from the branches and should not break when bent between your fingers. • If purchasing an artificial tree, choose one that is labeled fire resistant. • Cut two inches off the base and immerse the cut end into water immediately and place in a sturdy
stand capable of holding a large amount of water. Check the water in the tree stand often. An average tree can consume a quart to a gallon of water every day. • Position the tree away from fireplaces, direct sunlight and other sources of heat that can cause the tree to dry out prematurely or ignite. • Decorate tree safely with UL-approved miniature lights to prevent heat buildup and lessen drying effects. NEVER use real candles on a tree. • Inspect used lights for frayed wires, broken sockets or signs of wear and discard if damaged. • Turn off or unplug tree and exterior lights before leaving the house or going to bed.

season.
Good, now I have your attention! Actually, it happens to be free appliance safety checks that are now available to all SDG&E customers. SDG&E is trying to help all of us prepare for the winter season by offering easy tips on how to stay safe and warm, while saving money. After months of non-use, some of us might be unaware if our gas furnace is not operating properly or efficiently. With this in mind, SDG&E is offering appointments to have their personnel come to your home and check on this matter. It’s so important to make sure
that all gas appliances are properly maintained as there is the risk of a dysfunctional unit emitting carbon monoxide. This colorless, odorless, tasteless gas can have devastating consequences if not detected and happens to be one of the main reasons that all California homeowners are now required to install carbon monoxide detectors in their homes. To make this appointment, just call SDG&E directly at (800) 411-7343 or go online at www.SDGE.com and use the tab “Check My Appliances”. Remember, it’s all about safety for us and our loved ones! Happy Holidays to you all and be sure to stay safe!
Page 12 - December 20, 2012 “Hey Cactus, what brings you to town?” I asked cheerfully. “Sure as hell wouldn’t be your rotgut coffee,” Jack grimaced. “I come to git me one of them 28 inch Viewsonic flat screen monitors at Fry’s. They’re practically given em away and I got the last one.”
“”Cactus Jack,” a friend of Nome and Paul Van Middlesworth thecomputerfactoryltd.comThe Computer Factory Miracle on Mulberry Street It was Christmas Eve 2008. Coming back from the bank at noon I saw “Cactus Jack’s” white Ford 350 pick-up truck parked in front of our store. Jack’s pickup is distinctive for the huge five-foot wide set of Texas Longhorns mounted on the hood. On the front seat there was a Santa suit draped over a large box marked FRY’S. Cactus Jack owns the “The Rainbow Computer Emporium,” east of Rainbow. Jack is a cranky, profane curmudgeon with a weakness for Bourbon. A sun wrinkled, squintyeyed scowl is permanently etched on his face. The droopy, tobacco yellowed mustache, sweat stained Stetson and dusty, worn cowboy boots make Jack look more like a hard luck prospector than a computer store owner. Jack was pouring himself a coffee when I walked in the door.
“I saw it on your front seat Jack. Also noticed the Santa suit. Did you get yourself a part time job?” I asked innocently. Jack let loose a stream of profanity. “I’d go naked in a snowstorm afore I’d wear that stupid elf suit. I picked it up from the cleaners fer my nephew. He wears the dang thing Christmas Eve and his brats is dumb enough fall fer it every time. Makes me sick just thinking bout it.” Just then Nome called from her workbench, “ we have a small problem.” Jack and I walked over to see. Nome began. “Mrs. Pintera brought in this old PC and monitor that she bought for $10 at a garage sale. Their notebook PC got stolen and her kids need a computer for schoolwork. Mr. Pintera can’t find work and now he’s down with the flu, the family car is in the garage and they’ve got no money for Christmas.” Nome continued. “Mrs. Pintera had been able to put aside $100 for the kids Christmas presents but they need a computer more than Christmas presents. She asked me if I thought we could fix this one for $100. I told her I was sure we could fix it up for less than that.” Cactus Jack was squinting at Mrs.
Pintera’s PC. “You couldn’t make this thing into a computer for $500. It’s got Windows 95.” Jack looked at Nome and snickered. “You mighta bit off more’n you can chew, sweetheart.” Nome ignored Jack and turned to me. “We could give them one of our refurbished computers, load it with everything and tell her that all we had to do was put her parts in a used case. We could tell her it costs $10 so she won’t think its charity. What do you think?” “I like it, lets do it,” I agreed. Nome continued, “They live in that old green house on the left side of Mulberry so we could drop it off after work tonight and save her a bus trip.” Jack slapped his knee and hooted. “Where am I? Brother Beno’s? You saps are easier than a two-dollar hooker. If’n I fell for every phony sob story I’d be outa of business in a week. I’m gittin outa here afore I bust out cryin.” Jack headed for the door. Nome yelled after him, “ I sure hope you have a Merry Christmas Cactus Scrooge.” Jack hesitated at the door and turned with a wicked grin. “It’s Christmas Eve so I’m gonna snuggle up with a bottle of Jack Daniels in front of my brand new 28-inch Viewsonic monitor and order me a shiny new 357 magnum off’n EBay. Merry Christmas suckers, Ho Ho Ho.” We knocked on the Pintera’s door just after six. A radiant, smiling Mrs.
‘Chuckles’ Cont. from Page 2 groaned. Christmas - A Season to Be Grateful
At this very special time of the year most of us are thinking about family, friends and Christmas observance and celebrations. For me, the holiday season is a great break from politics as usual. During this legislative break, I have had the opportunity to meet with many of my constituents including high school students, community groups and business leaders. It has been great to visit with old friends and make new acquaintances. However, at this time of year, it is also important to remind ourselves of the wonderful freedoms and blessings we enjoy in America. We owe the defense of these freedoms
to our armed services, and I am very thankful to the families of service members and the men and women, former and current, who have served and protected our great nation. During Christmas let’s take time to appreciate our country and families. If you get an opportunity -thank a service member and their families for their sacrifice – because of their effort we can celebrate the season. Senator Mark Wyland represents the people of the 38th Senate District, which includes San Diego (Rancho Bernardo, 4S Ranch, Rancho Penasquitos, Carmel Valley) and Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad, Rancho Santa Fe, San Marcos, Escondido, Vista the south Orange County cities of San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.
Pintera opened the door and invited us in. A beautifully decorated Christmas tree spread its branches over a pile of expensively wrapped gifts. Happy children scampered about the house. Cactus Jack was right? We got conned? Mrs. Pintera saw the look on my face and blushed. “I don’t know how it happened or what’s going on but about an hour ago three men just marched in with all this stuff. They didn’t say a word. They set up the tree and brought in all those presents and then they left. I guess it must be a church or something.” I put the computer on the floor. “I’ll get your monitor” “Oh we don’t need one,” she said, “They brought us a really nice 28-inch Viewsonic flat screen monitor” Mrs. Pintera’s four year old tugged at my pant leg “Santa brought it, we saw him. He had a white beard and everything,” he said seriously. His older brother added, “his beard was white but his mustache was yellow and he wore cowboy boots” I bent over and asked the little guy, “Did Santa have a sleigh and reindeer?” “No sir, he had a white pick-up truck, but it had antlers.” Merry Christmas from all of us at The Computer Factory, 845 W.
