For those of us who readily admit to being soft-hearted saps when it comes to puppies and dogs, we have some brighter days ahead.

The market for Puppy Mill dogs in San Diego County is rapidly decreasing and will likely soon be a distant, sad memory.

But Puppy Mills are such a scourge that you and I need to continue the fight to enable statewide and federal legislation that will totally shut down the market for puppies and dogs that come out of these Puppy Mills, owned and operated by some of the saddest excuses for human beings you can imagine. We’ve got some mighty devoted people here in the county who can help out . . . they’ll help get legislation passed in Escondido, San Marcos, Vista, and Carlsbad (Oceanside has already passed the necessary legislation. Kudos to the Oceanside Mayor and Council.) Janice Hatch and her San Diego Animal Defense Team and So Cal Companion Animal Defenders are both volunteerbased organizations committed to making changes in legislation at the city, county, state and federal levels to ensure Puppy Mills are put out of business.

Both lobbied long and hard to ensure Oceanside’s leaders had the necessary information and motivation to pass legislation that prohibited the selling of retail animals within city limits. We first learned of Janice Hatch and her Animal Defense Team as they picketed and boycotted retail pet stores in the city of San Diego and eventually lobbied and successfully persuaded the San Diego City Council to pass legilsation prohibiting the retail sale of pets within city limits.

They then turned their attention to Oceanside and Carlsbad where they, alongside with So Cal Companion Defenders, both lobbied city legislators and exerted public/peer pressure on retail pet outlets sufficient to result in similar legislation in Oceanside.

They both now hope to persuade Carlsbad, Vista, San Marcos and Escondido to adopt similar legislation. The Paper - 760.747.7119

Why all this hard work from volunteer organizations? Because hundreds of thousands of dogs suffer in puppy mills in this country. The dogs are prisoners of greed. They are locked in small cages. They freeze in the winter and swelter in the summer. The dogs never get out of their prisons. They are bred over and over again until they die. The only way to free them from the misery of these horrid puppymills is to eliminate the

demand for puppies by refusing to buy a puppy in a pet store and boycotting those pet stores that sell puppies. When people stop buying puppies in pet stores, the puppy mills will go out of business and the misery will end.

The state and federal governments do not enforce the laws to protect the dogs. The commercial breeders and brokers have huge well-funded lobbying efforts. The only person who is going to make a difference for the dogs suffering in puppy mills is you, the reader. You, can free them from their puppy

mill prisons by joining organizations such as these, by helping them financially, by helping to picket, to lobby legislators, by helping to find foster and adoptive homes. A puppy mill is a large-scale commercial dog breeding operation that places profit over the well-being of its dogs—who are often severely neglected—and acts without regard to responsible breeding practices. Despite the intense suffering of these dogs, puppy mills are operating all over the U.S. Hundreds of thousands of puppies are raised each year in commercial kennels.

Female dogs are usually bred the first time they come into heat and are bred every heat cycle. They are bred until their poor worn out bodies can't reproduce any longer and then they are killed. Often they are killed by being bashed in the head with a rock or shot with a .22 caliber bullet to the head. Sometimes they are sold to laboratories or dumped. This is often by the time they reach five years old. Puppy mills maximize their profits by not spending adequate money on proper food, housing or veterinary care.

This results in generations of dogs with unchecked hereditary defects. There are over 4000 federally licensed breeding kennels.

Approximately 3,500 petstores in the United States sell puppies. They sell approximately 500,000 thousand puppies a year. It is estimated that the puppy industry in Missouri is valued at 40 million dollars a year. The puppy industry in one county in Pennsylvania Lancaster - is valued at 4 million dollars a year. There are seven states that are known as puppy mill states because they have the majority of the puppymills in the country. They are: Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania.

Pet stores often tell customers that their puppies come from local breeders or quality breeders. Don't believe them, ask to see the paperwork and find out where the puppies really come from.

Illness and disease are common in dogs from puppy mills. Because puppy mill operators often fail to apply proper husbandry practices that would remove sick dogs from their breeding pools, puppies from puppy mills are prone to congenital and hereditary conditions. These can include:

Sometimes. Fearful behavior and lack of socialization with humans and other animals are typical of puppy mill dogs. Puppies born in puppy mills are typically removed from their littermates and mothers at just six weeks of age. The first months of a puppy's life are a critical socialization period for puppies. Spending that time with their mother and littermates helps prevent puppies from developing problems like extreme shyness, aggression, fear and anxiety. How Are Animals Treated at Puppy Mills?

Puppy mills usually house dogs in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, without adequate veterinary care, food, water and socialization. Puppy mill dogs do not get to experience treats, toys, exercise or basic grooming. To minimize waste cleanup, dogs are often kept in cages with wire flooring that injures their paws and legs—and it is not unusual for cages to be stacked up in columns. Breeding dogs at mills might spend their entire lives outdoors, exposed to the elements, or crammed inside filthy structures where they never get the chance to feel the

sun or breathe fresh air.

How Often Are Dogs Bred in Puppy Mills?

In order to maximize profits, female dogs are bred at every opportunity with little to no recovery time between litters. When, after a few years, they are physically depleted to the point that they no longer can reproduce, breeding females are often killed. The mom and dad of the puppy in the pet store window are unlikely to make it out of the mill alive—and neither will the many puppies born with overt physical problems that make them unsalable.

So what does that really mean to us? It tells us that the disc itself does have a God-given ability to heal and repair if provided the proper mechanisms for self-healing. There is a specific mechanism inherent in each of the spinal discs called the “pump mechanism of disc nutri-tion” (see Fig 1). When this mechanism is not working properly, the spinal discs will begin to die causing bulges, herniations, and eventually spinal stenosis.

The spinal disc is one of the very few tissues in the body that does not have a direct blood supply for circulation. The only way that the disc gets the circulation of water, oxygen and nutrients for self-repair is via this specific disc pump mechanism. What happens when you decrease cir-culation in any type of tissue, whether it be animal tissue, plant tissue or human tissue? Exactly, it begins to become weak and begins to degenerate.

How Many Puppy Mills Exist in the U.S.?

Puppy mills became more prevalent after World War II. In response to widespread crop failures in the Midwest, the United States Department of Agriculture began promoting purebred puppies as a fool-proof "cash" crop. Chicken coops and rabbit hutches were repurposed for dogs, and the retail pet industry—pet stores large and small—boomed with the increasing supply of puppies from the new "mills."

At any given point in time, there are typically between 2,000 and 3,000 USDA-licensed breeders (commonly referred to as puppy mills) operating in the United States. However, this number does not take into consideration the number of breeders not required to be licensed by the USDA or the number of breeders operating illegally without a license. Because so many of these breeders are operating without oversight, it's impossible to accurately track them or to know how many there truly are. The ASPCA estimates that there could be as many as 10,000 puppy mills in the United States.

However, in most cases, the standards that breeders are required to meet by law are extremely minimal. Under the federal Animal Welfare Act, it is completely legal to keep a dog in a cage only six inches longer than the dog in each direction, with a wire floor, stacked on top of another cage, for the dog's entire life. Lt. Aaron Doyle is real . . . but his involvement in the Publisher’s Clearing House Awards program isn’t.

Scammers have been calling Oceanside residents and telling them they’ve won $100,000 from Publisher’s Clearing House. To lend credibility to the call they have used Lt. Doyle’s name. Oceanside police are warning the public of the scam and assuring that not only is Lt. Doyle not affiliated with the Publisher’s Clearing House but that the department would never involve itself in such a campaign.

The callers have been impersonating Lt. Aaron Doyle and asking for a $1,000 processing fee to facilitate the prize money. Department members are not allowed to represent the department in this way, officials said.

One man who paid the processing fee visited the police department last Wednesday. "He had received a phone call from 'Lt. Doyle' and wanted to know what the lieutenant had done with his money," according to Oceanside Police spokesman Leon Cosby. "He

We recently started a little game on Page 14 (The Mighty Mojo Page) where we feature area business people and a question . . “Do You Know This Guy?” Got a call from Dallas Woodring the other day who chuckled while he told me he had about five or six peole tell him they saw his obituary in The Paper. Nope. Just his picture and an invitation to identify him.

On Friday night, February 5th, officers from the Escondido Police Department participated in a DUI Saturation Patrol.

Officers assigned to this detail made 30 traffic stops and conducted 2 Field Sobriety Tests. During the evening, one driver was arrested for felony possession of an illegal weapon, and the passenger was charged with felony possession of 15 grams of illegal narcotics. Five drivers were cited for being unlicensed or having a suspended license. 4 vehicles were impounded. Heavy Police Presence in Escondido Results in Arrest of Parole Violater

This past Sunday neighborhood residents became aware of a police action in the area of east 15th Street. At about 2:15 p.m. a 22-year old Escondido man with a history of weapons violations was taken into custody on parole violations, the Escondido Police Department said in a statement Streets were blocked and a significant number of law enforcement officers were dispatched.

I recently did a preliminary proof on a book that Claudia Aragon is writing about North County’s favorite Dutchman, Arie DeJong. She’s writing Arie’s biography and even traveled home to Holland to research the home country.

A fascinating life and a fascinating book It will probably be out this year. Normally, a book of this nature would be primarily of interest to family and friends but it has so many interesting elements to it that I reckon a lot of ordinary folk (like you and me) will find it very interesting. With Arie’s biography in mind we had breakfast at Charlie’s Restaurant in Escondido one day last week and urged Charlie to have a book written about him. We speak of Charlie Mitich, owner of Charlies, and, like Arie DeJong, is an immigrant.

Quite often we dine at Charlie’s and if he’s not busy he’ll join us and with a few discreetly asked questions he begins to recall his life in Europe, his immigration to American, his career in the food service industry . . . lots of interesting tales. He also knows about as much Escondido history as anyone around. He could have quite an intersting book as well.

Escondido’s Parking Problem?

We attended the recent Downtown Escondido parking meeting at city hall, and I was amazed at the boorish behaviors exhibited by some of the audience members in attendance. As Dave Woods, Founder of Think Grand said — There was yelling, interrupting others, putting down others' ideas, name-calling — just a generally unconstructive and negative tone. In fairness, it was a minority of the audience, but it was a minority that was too loud and too large. Charlie was a bit reluctant initially . . . but I think, in time, and if enough of us who dine at Charlie’s encourage him, he just may hire a writer to tell his life’s story. His daughter, Suzie, is all in favor of it.

I’ve become addicted to the strawberries I buy almost every Saturday morning at the Saturday Market, held from 10am to 2pm on Kalmia Street between Grand Avenue and 2nd Avenue. I get my strawberries from one of the many beautiful women in my life, Jacinta. She has her vegetable/produce stand on the east end of Kalmia, near 2nd. I always buy three baskets of her strawberries. They might cost a wee bit more than at a regular grocery store but her strawberries are always hurge and need no sugar at all. She also has just gotten in Snap Peas . . . another item you can eat raw and they are crisp and tasty. If you need guidance on how to prepare different fruits and vegetables, Jacinta will be happy to help you. A gentle reminder to all you gents . . . this Saturday is Valentine’s Day. Don’t forget that special someone or you’ll never hear the end of it. As for me?

I’m going to fly

I love Escondido. For the most part, a lot of great things are happening here. But right now, as I see it, our community is being haunted by two very different but powerful forces — apathy and antagonism. Apathy is the bigger of the two problems (more on that some other time), but on this topic of antagonism, we all need to try our best to shift to a more civil and respectful tone when discussing major issues affecting our community. I pretty much agree with Dave. He’s spot on.

One of the things I learned at the meeting was the city of Escondido can go a long way toward eliminating a parking problem by simply requiring their 300 + employees to park at the Woodward Street parking lot. Other employers which have a high number of employees should have the same requirement. If this is done, I see no reason to spend taxpayer dol-

There is no legal definition of "puppy mill." Many pet store owners will tell you they get all their puppies from "licensed USDA breeders" or "local breeders." In fact, in order to sell puppies to pet stores, a breeder must be licensed by the USDA! Pet stores often use this licensing to provide a false sense of security to customers, when what it really means is that they do, in fact, get their puppies from puppy mills. The fact is, responsible breeders would never sell a puppy through a pet store because they want to screen potential buyers to ensure that the puppies are going to good homes. No. Being registered or having papers means nothing more than the puppy's parents both had papers. Many registered dogs are sold in puppy mills. Don't be fooled by "papers." If you can't find what you want through a shelter or breed rescue group, please learn how to recognize a responsible breeder. When buying a dog from a breeder, always be sure to meet the puppy's parents or at least the mother, and see where the dogs live. In the case of the city of Escondido, the solution is mandatory. They agreed to a settlement in a lawsuit filed by real estate developer and real estate broker Jim Crone; that settlement provided, in part, that the city of Escondido would require its employees to park in a parking facility removed from city hall (i.e., the Woodward Parking Lot). There’s plenty of parking available in the Regal Theatre Shopping Center across from the Center for the Arts, Escondido. The Woodward Street parking, which also services the Center for the Arts, is a natural to accommodate

Linda Ramos, regent of the Santa Margarita Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), honored Dr. Orv Mestad at their Annual Awards meeting. Dr. Mestad, a WWII veteran, entered the service at age 19, was quickly promoted to “Buck Sergeant” and placed in command of Army squadron 546AAA, a highly mobile unit of 14 men charged with protecting tanks from low flying aircraft. They also were responsible for protecting General Patton’s field headquarters near the front on a regular basis. Dr. Mestad was credited with giving orders to shoot down a plane that was on a mission to kill Generals Patton and Eisenhower while the leaders were making plans in Patton’s field headquarters. As the war came to an end, his command were the first American soldiers to discover and liberate a concentration camp. Two days later, Life magazine created a photographic historic moment with Patton, Eisenhower and the soldiers, the first evidence presented to Americans at home of the horrors that Hitler had created during his reign. At the end of the war, Dr. Merstad attended USC, graduating with honors from dental school. He had a dental practice for thirty-one years and was honored as Glendora’s Citizen of the Year, only one of many accolades he has

At a recent meeting of the Optimist Club of Carlsbad “The Achievers,” Chanel Fraikin gave a very special presentation on how she is leading a project to help children in Africa battle malaria. Her goal is to provide as many Mosquito Nets as possible to protect the children from mosquito bites that may cause malaria. Every minute a child dies from malaria. She is a passionate Girl Scout aiming to use the Gold Award as a platform to save as many children as possible. Her project is over at the end of March and she is hoping to collect 100 more nets. It’s Time to Stop Slaughtering Elephants

As many of you know, the slaughter of elephants in Africa is continuing. An estimated 96 elephants are killed each day for their ivory. In addition, the world’s rhinoceros population has been decimated by poachers who hunt them only for their horns. As a result, one of the world’s oldest and most unusual animals may now face extinction in the wild. Almost 40 years ago, California enacted legislation to ban the sale of ivory products imported after June 1, 1977. Nevertheless, an illicit ivory trade has continued to flourish in our state.

New reports indicate that much of the ivory offered for sale by vendors in California violates state law, even though the items are often altered to look older or are advertised as antiques.

This bill will close the longstanding loophole in California law which has helped fuel the world ivory trade, brought some rhinoceros populations to the brink of extinction and resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of elephants.

AB 96 is supported by a number of major wildlife conservation groups including the Wildlife Conservation Society, California Zoo and Aquarium Association and the Humane Society of the United States. We saw, among others, Kris Kristofferson, Bob Newhart, the Smother's Brothers, Hal Holbrook's "Mark Twain Tonight. . ." a number of others. They were all good . . . but none compared to the show Garrison Keillor put on last Thursday.

What we saw Thursday evening was a modern day version of Mark Twain. Twain was known as a writer for "Huckleberry Finn," "Tom Sawyer," "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County," and many, many other brilliant pieces. What is not known by those who do not follow Mark Twain's career is that he was also a masterful storyteller in the lecture hall and garnered raves in the morning newspapers following his appearances.

Garrison Keillor is of equal talent, at a minimum.

It appeared to me that he took about 20 different stories and weaved them all together into one continuous monologue . . . all of which made sense . . . and would often be interrupted by a song or a poem he had written to commemorate the memory ... many, many years ago.

If they don't sell quickly, the owners continue to slash the price until the puppies are sold. The less they sell for, the less profit the store makes. That means the store will order fewer puppies the next month. And puppy mills will ultimately produce fewer dogs. How Can I Help Stop Puppy Mills?

The most important thing you can do to help shut down puppy mills is refuse to shop at a store that sells puppies. You can also:

Take the pledge. Pledge that you'll never shop in a store that sells puppies—even if you're just buying food or toys. Join the Advocacy Brigade. You'll receive alerts that make it easy to fight for laws that protect dogs in puppy mills. Adopt a mill survivor. Animal Defense Team reminds us that it was a hard-fought and long-term battle. They endured personal threats, slashed tires on their cars, broken windows at their homes and at least one citizen's arrest of a protester.

members of Center of the Valley DAR Chapter, (Daughters of the American Revolution), and other Valley Center residents listened to stories of fascinating women who served in World War II. These stories, told by a DAR member, Peg Trout, a health and physical education teacher who lives in San Diego County, were of women who served as pilots, nurses, radio operators, mechanics, tele-typists, parachute packers, and mail sorters. Peg said she was inspired by her Aunt Flo to join the Navy in 1970. She had grown up listening to her aunt's stories and playing Army with her old uniforms. She later took a photography class and photographed women veterans at a veterans' retirement home in Chula Vista. "You couldn't take their photograph without listening to their story," Ms Trout said. These fascinating stories blossomed from this photography class into a book, titled "Sisters in War" and contains stories and photos of 53 of these women patriots. soldiers. This caused the Boston Massacre of 1770. Ironically, it was Cousin John who defended the six British soldiers accused of gunning down Bostonians on a town street. John provided a principled, controversial, and successful legal defense of the accused British soldiers, because he believed in the right to counsel and the "protection of innocence." Although angered by John’s defense of the British soldiers, Sam rightly pointed out everyone is entitled to a fair trial, regardless of who they are.

Sam was the ring leader of the socalled “Tea Party” raid on a British ship. While Sam was in on the planning, it remains unclear as to his participation in tossing tea into Boston Harbor. In 1776, John assisted Thomas Jefferson in drafting the Declaration of Independence. A political theorist and historian, John largely wrote the Massachusetts Constitution in 1780; he nominated George Washington to be commander-inchief, and helped write the U.S. Constitution. John became George Washington’s vice president and later the second U.S. President.

Historians have praised Sam Adams for steering his fellow colonists towards independence long before the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. This view gave way to negative assessments of Sam. He was portrayed as a master of propaganda who provoked mob violence to achieve his goals. Some modern scholars argue these traditional depictions are myths contradicted by the historical record. There’s little doubt the Revolutionary War, the Declaration of Independence, and the U.S. Constitution wouldn’t have successfully occurred when they did without the Adams boys. John's revolutionary credentials secured him two terms as George Washington's vice president and his own election in 1796 as the second president. During his one term as president, he encountered ferocious attacks by the Jeffersonian Republicans, as well as the dominant faction in his own Federalist Party led by his bitter enemy Alexander Hamilton.

In 1800, John Adams was defeated for re-election by Thomas Jefferson and retired to Massachusetts. He later resumed his friendship with Jefferson. He and his wife founded an accomplished family line of politicians, diplomats, and historians now referred to as the Adams political family. Adams was the father of John Quincy Adams, the sixth President of the United States. His achievements have received greater recognition in modern times, though his contributions were not initially as celebrated as those of other Founders. Adams was the first U.S. president to

reside in the executive mansion that eventually became known as the White House.

Last week we recounted how Microsoft can come under pressure to release a new OS (operating system) before it’s ready. By 2007 Windows XP had been around for six years. PC sales were slumping and the computer industry was clamoring for Microsoft to boost PC sales with a new OS release. In October of 2007 Microsoft reluctantly released “Windows Vista.” It was horrible. “Vista” offered no benefits to XP users. It was 25% to 40% slower than XP, buggy and had the annoying habit of asking the user for permission to do just about everything. Vista was DOA. Microsoft knew that Vista would be unpopular but Microsoft has ways to make an unpopular OS appear to be otherwise. When businesses balked at “Vista,” insisting on XP for their new PCs,

ERWF Seeks Scholarship Applicants - Escondido Republican Women, Federated (ERWF) is seeking applications from graduating high school seniors who attend school in Escondido and are interested in applying for the 2015 Charlotte Mousel Scholarship. Mrs. Mousel, 1994-95 President of the California Federation of Republican Women, exemplified the dedication and commitment of Federated Women. The recipient of ERWF’s award will go on to compete for the San Diego County Federation of Republican Women (SDCFRW) and the CFRW Southern Division's scholarships also named in honor of Mrs. Mousel. The scholarship is awarded to assist graduating seniors who demonstrate the ability to think constructively, through an essay contest, on matters affecting our government, and who exemplifies qualities of Citizenship and Scholarship. The work generally consists of City inspected and contractor performed installation of an underground storm drain improvements within the public right of way to re-route storm water from Starstone Drive at Commodore Drive, into a City Vallecitos Water District Easement, then along the entire length of La Rosa Drive, then southwesterly along Rancho Santa Fe Road towards the intersection with Linda Vista Drive, and southeasterly into an existing channel at the northwest corner of Bradley Park. The work will also consist of the vertical relocation of a section of Vallecitos Water District water main within the intersection of Rancho Santa Fe Road and Linda Vista Drive, abandonment of existing CMP storm drain piping and storm drain clean outs, installation of new PVC piping within existing CMP storm drain piping, repair and replacement of all existing paving and public improvements, installation of new fencing at an existing headwall, installation and refurbishment of private improvements (trees, stairs, redwood retaining wall) along the new storm drain alignment on La Rosa Drive, erosion control, and all other associated work to complete the project per the Plans. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT (CDBG)

This project is partially funded by a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). CDBG is a program funded by the U.S. Housing and Urban Development. This CDBG program allocates grants funding to larger cities and urban counties to address community development needs principally for low-and moderate-income persons. Additional CDBG requirements are included in the Appendices to this Bid and Contract Documents. Certain forms in Appendix B must be submitted with Bid Package. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that, pursuant to the San Marcos City Charter and the San Marcos Municipal Code, payment of prevailing wages and compliance with the California Labor Code Sections 1770 et seq IS REQUIRED for this project. TIME OF COMPLETION Time is of the essence in the performance of the Work under this Contract. All work shall be completed in every detail to the satisfaction of the Agency within ONE HUNDRED SIXTY (160) WORKING DAYS after

the date specified in the Notice to Proceed. Liquidated Damages shall conform to the latest edition of the Standard Specifications “Greenbook” subsection 6-9. GENERAL

An Impression You Won't Choke On!

In 1984 the first "digital" impression was introduced into the world of dentistry. This meant that instead of having to fill a patients mouth with impression materials, digital images could be taken with a miniature camera and once stitched together, could be used to fabricate a model on which a crown or bridge could be made. This was a real advantage because the patient wouldn't be drooling and/or choking on the impression material waiting for it to set up, a process normally taking 3-5 minutes! On the other hand, the scanners at the time were VERY EXPENSIVE and many doctors felt these first prototypes were not as accurate at the impression mate-

Fast Forward to today: Along with the advances in computer technology, computer imaging has progressed by leaps and bounds. Along with this, the number of competitive dental imaging companies has exploded. Now, instead of taking images of just one tooth, we can scan full arches. Two methods are now in use and competing with each other. One, takes still images and "stitches" together these images into a data base that can be transmitted over the internet to the lab for model fabrication to make a crown, bridge or denture. The other method uses video capturing and essentially does the same thing with regards to stitching and transmitting that data to the lab. Both systems, whether it be a series of still pictures or a video capture of the image, produce accurate replicas of your mouth and from the models produced, can allow the laboratory to fabricate beautiful restorations. Past systems required fairly large units, called cart systems,

that represented look a likes to R2D2 when used in the dental office, and required special software programs (closed systems) specific to their particular manufacturer in order to communicate that information to the lab (i.e. proprietary software). If your lab didn't have the right software, you were out of luck! However, now most newer systems are "open" and all labs can take them. In addition, the newest systems have traded the old mobile units (sorry R2D2!) for USB connections that can be used on any computer!

So, the next time you're in

your dentist's office you might be surprised if you need a crown, bridge or even a denture (coming soon!). The "early adoption" phase of digital impressions is moving into the "becoming widely accepted" phase.

With more manufacturers entering the market and more competitive pricing as well as wider acceptance and use, you may be pleasantly surprised to find your dentist "scanning" your mouth without the old impression materials and enjoying a much more comfortable experience!
