Blame it on a French orphan by the name of Martin Fugate.
He claimed a land grant in 1820 and settled on the banks of eastern Kentucky’s Trouble-some Creek. No mention of his skin color is made in the early histories of the area, but family lore has it that Martin himself was blue. The odds against it were incalculable, but Martin Fugate managed to find and marry a woman who carried the same recessive gene. His red-headed American wife, was the former Elizabeth Smith, whose skin, it is said “was as pale as the mountain laurel that blooms every spring around the creek hollows.” The Fugates had seven children, four of whom were reported to be blue in color. They were away in the remote section of Kentucky and folks just naturally tended to marry folks that lived closest to them. Never mind the fact that these newlyweds were, more often than not, kin to one another. Likely first cousins at least. Fugates would marry other Fugates . . . but sometimes they’d branch out and marry Combses, Smiths, Ritchies, and Stacys.
They all lived in isolation from “the real world,” bunched up in log cabins up and down the hollows so it just seemed natural to marry your neighbor. As a result, the clan kept multiplying and intermarrying and interbreeding. "When they settled this country back then, there was no roads. It was hard to get out, so they intermarried," says Dennis Stacy, a 51-year-old coal miner and amateur genealogist who has filled a loose-leaf notebook with the laboriously traced blood lines of several local families.

family's chart, which lists his mother's and his father's great grandfather as Henley Fugate, "I'm kin to myself." It had been 162 years since the phenomenon first was noticed to the point where an explanation for the phenomenon developed. And an apparent cure. Martin and Elizabeth Fugate's blue children had multiplied in this natural isolation tank.
Carrie Lee Kilburn, a nurse at the rural medical center called Homeplace Center referred to the daughter of Levy Fugate, Luna, as "the bluest woman I ever saw. Luna was bluish all over. Her lips were as dark as a bruise.."
Levy had married a Ritchie girl and bought 200 acres of rolling land along Ball Creek. The couple had 8 children, including Luna. A fellow by the name of John Stacy spotted Luna at Sunday services of the Old Regular Baptist Church before the turn of the century. Stacy courted her, married her, and moved from Troublesome Creek to make a living in timber on her daddy's land. John Stacy still lives on Lick Branch of Ball Creek. Stacy recalls that his father-in-law, Levy Fugate, was "part of the family that showed blue. All them old fellers way back then was blue. One of em - I remember seeing him when I was just a boy - Blue Anze, they called him. Most of them old people went by that name - the blue Fugates. It run in that generation who lived up and down Ball Creek".

"They looked like anybody else, ‘cept they had the blue color," Stacy said.
Stacy says, sitting in a chair in his plaid flannel shirt and suspenders, next to a cardboard box where a small black piglet, kept as a pet, is squealing for his bottle, "I couldn't tell you what caused it." The only thing Stacy can't or

ple bearing at least 13 children before she died at 84. The clinic rarely saw her and never for anything serious.
Benjy Stacy was born in a modern hospital near Hazard, Kentucky, not far from Troublesome Creek. He inherited his father's lankiness and his mother's red hair but what he got from his great, great, great grandfather was dark blue skin! The doctors were astonished, not so the parents, but the boy was rushed off to a medical clinic in Lexington (University of Kentucky Medical School). Two days of tests showed no cause for Benjy's blue skin. Benjy's grandmother Stacy asked the doctor's if they had heard of the blue Fugates of Troublesome Creek. Put on that track, they concluded that Benjy's condition was inherited. Benjy lost his blue tint within a few weeks and now he is about as normal a 7-year old boy as you might imagine. His lips and fingernails still turn a purplish blue when he gets cold or angry and that trait was exploited by the medical students back when Benjy was an infant. They would gather around his crib
and try to get him to cry so they could witness the lips and fingernails turn blue. Dark blue lips and fingernails are the only traces of Martin Fugate's legacy left in the boy; that, and the recessive gene that has shaded many of the Fugates and their kin blue for the past 162 years. 24 years old now and am in my senior year of college at Eastern Kentucky University. The color of my lips and finger nails usually draws some attention, but mostly out of concern for my health or curiosity. Madison Cawein began hearing rumors about the blue people when he went to work at the University of Kentucky's Lexington medical clinic in 1960. "I'm a hematologist, so something like that perks up my ears," Cawein says, sipping on whiskey sours and letting his mind slip back to the summer he spent "tromping around the hills looking for blue people." Cawein would drive back and forth between Lexington and Hazard, an eight-hour ordeal before the tollway was built, and scour the hills looking for the blue people he'd heard rumors about. The American Heart Association had a clinic in Hazard, and it was there that Cawein met "a great big nurse"
who offered to help.
Her name was Ruth Pendergrass, and she had been trying to stir up medical interest in the blue people ever since a dark blue woman walked into the county health department one bitterly cold afternoon and asked for a blood test.
"She had been out in the cold and she was just blue!" recalls Pendergrass, who is now 69 and retired from nursing. "Her face and her fingernails were almost indigo blue. It like to scared me to death! She looked like she was having a heart attack. I just knew that patient was going to die right there in the health department, but she wasn't a'tall alarmed. She told me that her family was the blue Combses who lived up on Ball Creek. She was a sister to one of the Fugate women." About this same time, another of the blue Combses, named Luke, had taken his sick wife up to the clinic at Lexington. One look at Luke was enough to "get those doctors down here in a hurry," says Pendergrass, who joined Cawein to look for more blue people. Trudging up and down the hollows, fending off "the two mean

seat and closed her eyes.
As the train rolled out of the station, the guy sitting next to her pulled out his cell phone and started talking in a loud voice: "Hi sweetheart. It's Eric. I'm on the train." "Yes, I know it's the six thirty and not the four thirty, but I had a long meeting."
"No, honey, not with that blonde from the accounts office. With the boss."

dogs that everyone had in their front yard," the doctor and the nurse would spot someone at the top of a hill who looked blue and take off in wild pursuit. By the time they'd get to the top, the person would be gone. Finally, one day when the frustrated doctor was idling inside the Hazard clinic, Patrick and Rachel Ritchie walked in. "They were bluer'n hell," Cawein says. "Well, as you can imagine, I really examined them. After concluding that there was no evidence of heart disease, I said 'Aha!' I started asking them questions: 'Do you have any relatives who are blue?' then I sat down and we began to chart the family." Cawein remembers the pain that showed on the Ritchie brother's and sister's faces. "They were really embarrassed about being blue," he said. "Patrick was all hunched down in the hall. Rachel was leaning against the wall. They wouldn't come into the waiting room. You could tell how much it bothered them to be blue."
After ruling out heart and lung diseases, the doctor suspected methemoglobinemia, a rare hereditary blood disorder that results from excess levels of methemoglobin in the blood. Methemoglobin which is blue, is a nonfunctional form of the red hemoglobin that carries oxygen. It is the color of oxygen-depleted blood seen in the blue veins just below the skin. If the blue people did have methemoglobinemia, the next step was to find out the cause. It can be brought on by several things: abnormal hemoglobin formation, an enzyme deficiency, and taking too much of certain drugs, including vitamin K, which is essential for blood clotting and is abundant in pork liver and vegetable oil.
Cawein drew "lots of blood" from the Ritchies and hurried back to his lab. He tested first for abnormal hemoglobin, but the results were negative.
Stumped, the doctor turned to the medical literature for a clue. He found references to methemoglobinemia dating to the turn of the century, but it wasn't until he came across E. M. Scott's 1960 report in the Journal of Clinical Investigation (vol. 39, 1960) that the answer began to emerge. Scott was a Public Health Service doctor at the Arctic
Health Research Center in Anchorage who had discovered hereditary methemoglobinemia among Alaskan Eskimos and Indians. It was caused, Scott speculated, by an absence of the enzyme diaphorase from their red blood cells. In normal people hemoglobin is converted to methemoglobin at a very slow rate. If this conversion continued, all the body's hemoglobin would eventually be rendered useless. Normally diaphorase converts methemoglobin back to hemoglobin. Scott also concluded that the condition was inherited as a simple recessive trait. In other words, to get the disorder, a person would have to inherit two genes for it, one from each parent. Somebody with only one gene would not have the condition but could pass the gene to a child. Scott's Alaskans seemed to match Cawein's blue people. If the condition were inherited as a recessive trait, it would appear most often in an inbred line.
Cawein needed fresh blood to do an enzyme assay. He had to drive eight hours back to Hazard to search out the Ritchies, who lived in a tappedout mining town called Hardburly. They took the doctor to see their uncle, who was blue, too. While in the hills, Cawein drove over to see Zach (Big Man) Fugate, the 76-yearold patriarch of the clan on Troublesome Creek. Zach took the doctor even farther up Copperhead Hollow to see his Aunt Bessie Fugate, who was blue. Bessie had an iron pot of clothes boiling in her front yard, but she graciously allowed the doctor to draw some of her blood. "So I brought back the new blood and set up my enzyme assay," Cawein continued. "And by God, they didn't have the enzyme diaphorase. I looked at other enzymes and nothing was wrong with them. So I knew we had the defect defined.''
Just like the Alaskans, their blood had accumulated so much of the blue molecule that it overwhelmed the red of normal hemoglobin that shows through as pink in the skin of most Caucasians.
Once he had the enzyme deficiency isolated, methylene blue sprang to Cawein's mind as the "perfectly obvious" antidote. Some of the blue people thought the doctor was slightly addled for suggesting that a blue dye could turn them pink. But Cawein knew from earlier studies that the body has an alternative method of converting methemoglobin back to nor-
mal. Cawein chose methylene blue because it had been used successfully and safely in other cases and because it acts quickly. Cawein packed his black bag and rounded up Nurse Pendergrass for the big event. They went over to Patrick and Rachel Ritchie's house and injected each of them with 100 milligrams of methylene blue. ''Within a few minutes. the blue color was gone from their skin," the doctor said. "For the first time in their lives, they were pink. They were delighted."
"They changed colors!" remembered Pendergrass. "It was really something exciting to see."
The doctor gave each blue family a supply of methylene blue tablets to take as a daily pill. The drug's effects are temporary, as methylene blue is normally excreted in the urine. One day, one of the older mountain men cornered the doctor. "I can see that old blue running out of my skin," he confided.
Before Cawein ended his study of the blue people, he returned to the mountains to patch together the long and twisted journey of Martin Fugate's recessive gene. From a history of Perry County and some Fugate family Bibles listing ancestors, Cawein has constructed a fairly complete story.
The story demonstrated that as coal mining and the railroads brought progress to Kentucky, the blue Fugates started moving out of their communities and marrying other people. The strain of inherited blue began to disappear as the recessive gene spread to families where it was unlikely to be paired with a similar gene. Cawein and his colleagues published their research on hereditary diaphorase deficiency in the Archives of Internal Medicine in April, 1964. He hasn't studied the condition for years. Even so, Cawein still gets calls for advice.
The doctor was later approached by the producers of the television show "That's Incredible." They wanted to parade the blue people across the screen in their weekly display of human oddities. Cawein would have no part of it, and he related with glee the news that a film crew sent to Kentucky from Hollywood fled the "two mean dogs in every front yard" without any film. Cawein cheers their bad luck not out of malice but out of a deep respect for the blue people of

The doctor never did reveal the location of the blue people and what with a daily dose of methylene blue, it may be that no one will ever find them again. References:

About 6:40 pm on Friday, January 4th, a Caucasian or Hispanic male adult entered Comerica Bank at 2626 El Camino Real, Carlsbad, and committed a robbery. The suspect implied he had a weapon in his jacket pocket however he did not display a weapon to the bank clerk during the incident. The suspect left the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash and drove away north bound on El Camino Real. The suspect’s vehicle is a large white 1990’s model Toyota extended cab pickup truck without a camper shell. The suspect was wearing a black baseball cap, gray hooded sweatshirt and dark brown pants. He has a mustache, tattoos on his neck and hands, weighs about 150 pounds and is about 5’5” tall. No one was injured during the robbery. San Diego police report a man with a gun robbed a RadioShack in Rancho Bernardo just after 9 p.m. Tuesday. Police say the man threatened an employee and demanded money, then ran off with the stolen cash from the store on Bernardo Center Drive south of Bernardo Plaza. No one was injured in the robbery. The thief was described as white, in his late 20s, about 6 feet tall and with a thin build. He was wearing dark clothing.

A retired Air Force veteran of 20 years, he proudly reports that all three of his children are active duty members of the Armed Forces and that he can still wear his uniform he had when he retired. Since retiring, Dave has opened his own computer repair and sales store in Escondido at 112 N. Kalmia, has gotten very active in a number of service groups, including currently serving as president of the Hidden Valley Kiwanis Club of Escondido, for the 2nd year in a row. He also serves his church and various other charitable organizations.

may be close to resolution, according to an attorney representing the city of Escondido. John Ramirez, told a Vista Superior Court judge that he was encouraged by a formal offer submitted two weeks ago by those who filed a voting rights lawsuit against the city. The lawsuit, submitted in December 2011 on behalf of five Latino residents, argues Escondido’s at-large citywide elections violate the California Voting Rights Act by discriminating against Latinos.
The proposed settlement calls for Escondido to use San Diego’s method for drawing the boundaries of election districts. That method calls for the districts to be drawn by a seven-member independent commission, which a threejudge panel would appoint.
Escondido officials have previously said they would prefer to have the city’s 144,000
residents have a say, and that the boundaries should be created based on demographic studies, community debate and public hearings.
However, the Escondido council, which would need to approve any settlement, had been unable to discuss it because it hasn’t met since Dec. 19, Ramirez said. Jim Finberg, a San Francisco attorney who filed the voting rights lawsuit, agreed Friday that settlement talks had accelerated recently.
Finberg successfully lobbied Judge Earl Maas on Friday to set a trial date because the pressure of a trial date typically encourages both sides to compromise, Finberg said.
Attorneys for both sides are scheduled to return to court March 15 to update Maas on the status of talks. The judge said he might appoint a mediator at that time if progress has been elusive. Another Drive In Coming to San Marcos?

About 12 months ago, while channel surfing, looking for something decent and interesting to watch, I stumbled across a program on PBS (Public Broadcasting System) that looked somewhat interesting.
The setting for the story was a small fishing village in Cornwall, England. The scenery looked pleasantly familiar to me as my first wife was from Scotland and the street scenes, the pubs, the harbor (or, as the Brits insist on spelling it, “harbour,” all gave me an instant feeling of deja vu and familiarity with the setting as I had visited Scotland and Ireland many times. I felt at home.

An Epilogue to Christmas
We had a great Christmas at our house on Christmas Eve.
Evelyn had her two sons and their families visiting. Was pleased to see Marty, Evelyn's youngest son, his girl friend, Kim, and Klyde, their dog. Several years ago Klyde was a mal-treated, abandoned dog that Marty learned about and agreed to take in to his home. They have become inseparable. Mutual love and admiration. Marty is a quiet guy, not given to showing much emotion. But I knew full well that he had just gone through emotional hell.
I learned only on Christmas Eve, to my great shock, that Klyde had gotten into some snail-bait while accompanying Marty on one of his landscaping assignments.
He became violently ill. Difficulty in breathing, convulsions, a variety of serious symptoms. At first, they

thought Klyde was having an epileptic seizure . . . he suffers from epilepsy but is easily controlled with regular medication. Soon, however, they realized it was something more serious.
To their great credit, Marty and Kim narrowed down what happened to the fact that Klyde had gone nosing around in the dirt around some plants and gobbled up some snailbait; deadly poison! Fortunately, they located California Veterinary Specialists in Carlsbad, a stateof-the-art urgent care facility for pets. They have 32 total vets within their organization, 11 in their Carlsbad facility alone. Dr. Todd Bowdre attended Klyde. Following a quick consultation, Marty agreed to go forward and the vets went to work. Intubation, IV's, stomach pumping, the whole nine yards. It was painful to watch Klyde suffering . . . and painful to watch him endure the medical procedures necessary to save his life. But it worked!
Watching Klyde play with our pups on Christmas Eve, you would never have imagined how close to death he had come, just a few weeks earlier.

You see, we've grown rather fond of Klyde as well. My two (pups) love to play with him and he loves to wrestle and growl with them. They're like a threesome of little kids (though Klyde is around nine years old; our two girls are both about two

Having discussed this event with several friends, I received the following message from long time friend, Sid Colquitt:

There are products from companies in China that design and produce their merchandise there, and many of their products (cell phones) surpass the technology and craftsmanship of our American outsourcing companies, not to mention they also tend to be much less expensive. So if this keeps happening, China's industry could become completely independent, and our once great country that was the leader of innovation will be nothing more than consumers of other nations. Getting our act together and improving education is what I believe we need to do, for innovation sprouts from knowledge.
Although I am glad the Proposition 30 was passed in my sake, this new addition to my parents and soon to be my tax pile will not help future American innovators either. My new years wish is that educators and legislators will get their act together and start solving problems with the money they already have instead of attempting to cover them up with the money in our pockets. Help With Winter Shelters Needed

Since my lay-off from the UT San Diego in October I have been volunteering at Haven House, an Escondido homeless shelter. It is humbling to see these people (clients) who have no where else to go come in out of the cold and rain to get a hot meal and place to sleep. Every night from late November to late March, Haven House feeds up to 60 people who need our help.
I am writing you today to ask you to help our clients by
finding or providing 60 meals on an open night between now and the end of March. If all my friends in Escondido said "Yes" the homeless at Haven House would be eating worry free for the rest of the winter season. However, I realize some of you are busy, or facing difficulties of your own. Only give if/what you can. Each open night we need 60 dinners consisting of a main portion, side portion and desert. We have servers if you cannot provide them. What I am asking is for you to ask your employer, church, fraternity, or social club to donate these meals. Or, if your family has the funds (between $200 to $300) you can provide the meals too. We have some nights where 3 or 4 families get together to provide the meal. If you cannot find meals or provide a meal but still want to help, you can volunteer we need volunteers from 5pm to 9:30pm every night to help with intake and serving dinners. We also take donations for meals (anything from $10.00 up to $300.00 would be a great help).

The sessions are held on consecutive Wednesday evenings (with the exception of a day-time city tour) and participants meet at various city facilities. Nighttime closures of SR-78 planned for January
Please be advised that for approximately eight weeks, beginning January 21, work on the SR-78 between Nordahl Road and Twin Oaks Valley Road will require intermittent nighttime freeway closures from 11:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. These nighttime closures will allow crews to rehabilitate a portion of the SR-78 over Mission Road and finish constructing the eastbound auxil-
iary lanes.
During these closures, motorists are urged to avoid the area if possible. Traffic delays are expected during construction. Signs will be in place to direct motorists through detours. Detailed detour maps are available on www.san-marcos.net under “News.”
Residents and businesses in the area are also advised that heavy machinery will cause nighttime noise in the area during construction. The schedule for this freeway closure is subject to weather delays.

The Oceanside Public Library, in partnership with the Oceanside Historical Society, invites all current and former Oceanside residents to become a part of local history as Oceanside celebrates its 125th Anniversary in 2013. On Saturday, January 12, at 10:30 AM, in the Civic Center Library Community Rooms (330 North Coast Highway), a photo workshop will take place. The Library is asking that you bring your family photographs and old photos of
Oceanside homes, businesses and other locations in the City to this event. Each photo will be scanned and immediately returned to their respective owner. These photographs will then be recorded at the Library and become part of a larger piece of work that will be presented in September 2013 in honor of the 125th celebration of the establishment of Oceanside. Windows 8, The Beat Goes On
Microsoft’s latest OS (operating system) for PCs, Windows 8, has been in release for two months. By now retailers have cleared their shelves of Windows 7 PCs and new PC buyers have no choice. Microsoft’s huge gamble to force feed W8 to consumers is in play.
When Microsoft’s Windows 8 strategy became clear in November we predicted a retail consumer revolt and slumping PC sales. We advised our readers to stick with Windows 7 or XP. We felt that Windows 8, in its present form, was not a viable OS for mainstream PC users. If W8 is ever to be accepted by PC users, Microsoft needs to rework the “Metro” user interface to make it
Capital Fellows Program
There are few postgraduate opportunities that provide practical work experience, maintain an active network of alumni, and can boast of top national rankings. The Capital Fellows Program is one of the few. This program is ranked one of the top ten internship programs in the country, and yet it is much more than an internship. There are four individual programs: the Judicial Fellowship, Executive Fellowship, Assembly Fellowship, and Senate Fellowship. During the 11month commitment, fellows gain experience working closely with lawyers, agency directors, and legislators. The programs integrate academic coursework with fulltime employment, which allows participants to earn master’s degree credits while earning a paycheck. Many

Prestigious publications like Consumer Reports and Tom’s Hardware have joined in advising consumers not to buy PCs with W8. Fujitsu’s president complained last week that W8 is responsible for their dismal recent PC notebook sales. W8 PC sales in the first 60 days are less than half the comparable period sales of Win 7 PCs and have even fallen below the abysmal first 60 days sales record of the “Vista” PCs. It’s not bad news for everyone though. Apple, Google and The Computer Factory are enjoying Microsoft’s ongoing W8 fiasco. Apple PC sales are seeing a boost as some disgusted PC shoppers resent Microsoft’s ham-handed attempt to force them to by PCs with the mouse hostile W8 “metro” interface and are willing to shell out two to three times as much for a comparable Apple PC. Both Apple and Google are cackling as W8 PC problems put a damper on Microsoft’s sale of competing smart phone and tablet products. buy the new Win 7 notebook and desktop PCs here that they no longer can find in retail stores. This year’s Nov-Dec PC sales were over 20% below last years. The magnitude of this W8 rejection is somewhat masked by the fact that Microsoft isn’t even attempting to sell W8 in the corporate environment. It’s business as usual with enterprise PC buyers staying with Win 7. Combine that with the fact that a large part of this year’s NovDec PC sales was the sell-off of retail inventories of Win 7 PCs. Take these factors into consideration and it begins to appear that W8 may be causing as much as a 50% drop in
retail PC sales.
The official numbers aren’t out yet but it is rumored that consumers are returning W8 PCs in record numbers. When unwary customers get their new W8 computers home and see the “Metro” user interface on their new PC they’re packing them up and taking them back. Will Microsoft be able to stonewall consumer resistance? Will they be forced to redesign the user interface? Will they be forced to allow Win 7 back into retail distribution? We certainly don’t know the answers but we are enjoying Microsoft’s W8 problems.

In talking to the vets recently, they tell me that snail bait is commonly applied this time of year . . . it needs to be stored safely and pets need to be kept away from areas where it has been applied. Copntaining metaltahide, a deadly poison, it is the most common reason for accidentally poisoning a dog. Within four hours of ingestion, the dog will die. Symptoms include drooling, muscle tremors, fevers, vomiting . . . shutting down of the nervous system . . . it is, essentially, a neurotoxin. I never knew about snail bait and the danger it poses to dogs. I did, however, know of the tremendous asset we have in North San Diego County with wonderful Urgen Care Centers that can save our dogs lives. California Veterinary Specialists in Carlsbad was there when needed and for that, we are grateful. So is Klyde.

His cold, abrasive manner offends many of the villagers. He is perceived by them to be short tempered and lacking in a bedside manner, whereas he feels he is going about his duties in a professional and no-nonsense manner, not wasting time chatting with the villagers. His haemophobia, (the British spelling of hemophobia) which results in frequent and debilitating bouts of nausea and vomiting, eventually becomes known amongst the villagers.

“Daybreak.” (See: http://docmartinseries5.blogspot.com/2012 /08/martin-on-daybreak.html). Clunes, in character as Doc Martin, and Clunes, out of character on a tv talk show are two totally different people. Out of character, Clunes is a smiling, happy-go-lucky guy, easy to talk to, engaging. In character, Clunes, as Doc Martin, is gruff, seldom smiles, often has a scowl, and is short and abrupt with those he meets. Hard to imagine someone holding that character throughout an entire episode of filming. You have to be a pretty powerful actor to not only develop the character, but to hold it throughout an entire filming episode.
If I have a criticism of the Doc Martin program it is that the women characters in the show wear the most god-awful looking footwear. It’s as though they were walking around town wearing a couple of waffle irons on their feet. Even the very attractive Louisa Glasson, the love interest, wears clumpy, ugly looking shoes. But, that’s a minor complaint when compared to the overall brilliance of the show. Original character

The United Kingdom, which gave us “Monty Python” now delivers yet another comedy classic, though in a bit more subdued vein.
Doc Martin is a British television comedy drama series set in the fictional seaside village of Portwenn and filmed on location in the village of Port Isaac, Cornwall, United Kingdom. Five series aired between 2004 and 2011. The show is a major triumph in terms of story line, casting, cinematography, acting, and atmosphere. An example of the brilliant acting is found by watching Martin Clunes while he is out of character on a British tv program,
Martin Clunes originally played a character called "Dr Martin Bamford" in the 2000 film Saving Grace and its two madefor-TV prequels, Doc Martin and Doc Martin and the Legend of the Cloutie, which were made by British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB). The prequels show Bamford, a successful obstetrician rather than surgeon, finding out that his wife has been carrying on extramarital affairs behind his back. After confronting her with the news, he escapes London and heads for Cornwall, which he remembers fondly from his youth. Shortly after he arrives, and following the departure of the village's resident GP, decides to stay in Port Isaac and fill the gap. In these three films the village is not known as Portwenn.
ITV felt the Martin Bamford character should be portrayed as a "townie," out of his depth and uncomfortable in the country. They also wanted something edgier, so Clunes suggested the doctor be very grumpy and socially inept. The new doctor's surname was to be Ellingham, an anagram of the last name of the new writer, Dominic Minghella, who was brought in to rework the doctor's background and create a new cast of supporting characters. Thirty-eight episodes aired on ITV in the UK between 2004

and 2011. Clunes's wife is Philippa Braithwaite, Doc Martin's producer.
Series 5 was produced in 2011 and has eight episodes. In the USA Series 5 began broadcasting in March and April 2012. Martin Clunes announced a sixth series of Doc Martin on The Alan Titchmarsh Show (5 March 2012). It will be filmed in the spring of 2013, and broadcast this autumn. He had previously stated that a sixth series would probably be the final one.
In the UK, Doc Martin has been a ratings success for ITV1 with the third series achieving ITV1's best midweek drama performance in the 9 PM Monday slot since. I submit that once American audiences learn about, and watch an episode or two of Doc Martin, the show will be a major hit here as well.
