America is justifiably proud of its air force . . . but for sheer chutzpah, loads of courage, and a determination to succeed, it’s hard to beat the Israel Air Force.
It was founded on May 28, 1948, shortly after the Israeli Declaration of Independence.
But, how was it founded?
In 1948, a group of former WWII pilots, mostly from America, volunteered to fight for Israel in the War of Independence. Think hard upon these circumstances and see if you’d be willing to give up everything you had, to lay down your life, to sacrifice . . .
Listen to some of the American volunteers who participated:
Leon Frankel: I was in Minot, North Dakota, partners in a used car lot, great business, many girl friends, the whole enchilada, when I got this call from New York. The fella identified himself as Steve Schwartz. He apprised me of the fact that Israel was gonna declare itself as a state and they were gonna be attacked by at least five Arab armies and they had no way to defend themselves except that they had purchased some airplanes but they had no one to fly them. And would I be in a position to help?

And I just made up my mind . . ‘nothing was gonna stop me.’
I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t. The alternative was too hard to envision. Harold Livingston, Army Air Force, 91 years-old: “I got a letter from this friend of mine, a TWA pilot; it said, “call this number and ask for Swifty; just like that. Leon Frankel, then . . ‘Livingston, where the hell are you. We been looking for you. We need you!”
“You need me?”

This guy says .. ‘look, about six miles from where we’re standing is the whole Egyptian Army. They’ve got about 10,000 men, about 500 vehicles, tanks, trucks and tankers . . .and we have nothing to stop them.’
I said . . . ‘but tomorrow I was gonna go to .. ‘ He said, if you don’t go now, they’ll be in Tel Aviv in the morning and there will be no Israel.’
We started an air force. We built an air force.
They evaded the FBI and an international blockade.
They arrived in a new nation, under attack, as five Arab armies invaded Israel upon its declaration of statehood.
Lou Lenart: I looked back and I saw the land of Israel . . . I looked there and I saw the enemy that came to destroy us. I just did a quick prayer, even though I’m not religious, and I turned the airplane upside down because in a dive bomber, the steeper the dive the more accurate is the hit . . . I was born to be here at that moment in history . . . to contribute to Israel’s survival . . .
Lou Lenart, Marine Corps Pilot: It wasn’t like a newspaper ad . . ‘Join the Haganah .. “ –It was illegal, of course, but I thought . . . I know there’s gonna be a war there . . and I’m a fighter pilot. I wanna go there.”

Leon Frankel: I remember sitting in the cockpit of my German ME109 . . . wearing my German uniform, German helmet, German parachute . . . and I thought . . ‘what’s a nice Jewish boy from St. Paul doing in a place like this?” The irony of it did not escape any of us.”
Harold Livingston: I felt more at home in Israel than I did in the United States. As a Jew I felt that . . ‘this is my home.’ As a Jew, I now felt proud of being Jewish .

The man responded, “When you break down they tell you to put flares in the front and flares in the back. I never did understand it neither.” Tennessee

These hardy men, a rag-tag group of WWII fighter pilots, some from America, others from other nations, all came together in a modern day version of David versus Goliath. They came to be known as Machal (from outside the Land).

This unruly but dedicated bunch plus a few Czech mechanics hastily departed for the Holy Land and by May 29th, 1948, they had four aircraft assembled but not tested. The situation was desperate as an Egyptian armored column was only 20 miles away from Tel Aviv and the only thing in its way was an outnumbered, scattered and worn out Israeli army.
No. 1 Squadron, based at an airfield near Tel Aviv was the IAF’s first squadron. Its small inventory of Piper Cubs and Austers was augmented at an early stage by a Bonanza, three Fairchilds, and a Dragon Rapide, which were smuggled out of South Africa. On the afternoon of Friday, 14th May 1948, at the very time that Prime Minister Ben-Gurion was declaring the establishment of the State of Israel, Boris Senior as pilot, with Smoky Simon as navigator and Shmulik Videlis as aerial photographer, carried out the IAF’s first air reconnaissance mission over enemy territory in a Beechcraft Bonanza to report on the enemy forces that were converging on Israel from Transjordan (now known as Jordan) – hundreds of vehicles, tanks, trucks, armored cars, and many thousands of troops.
In the early days of the war, No. 1 Squadron employed its light civil aircraft – Austers, Piper Cubs, Fairchilds, Bonanzas, and a Dragon Rapide as “Bombers,” dropping 25 and 50 pound bombs and incendiaries on targets mainly in the area surrounding Jerusalem. “Bomb-chuckers,” as they were called, carried these bombs on their laps, and on reaching the target the safety pins were released and the bombs were manually dropped onto the target. May 29, 1948, was the official formation date of Israel's first fighter squadron, the 101st "Hakrav Harishona" (First Fighter) Squadron, commanded by Mordechai “Modi” Alon.
The Machal pilots turned the tide of the war and laid the groundwork for the Israeli Air Force.
“Shortly before I left I happened to be in Tel Aviv when they were bringing in refugees from the death camps in Europe. I remember them getting down on their hands and knees and kissing the ground. I knew then and there . .. that was the reason I came.“ Leon Frankel I did something good (smiles) . .

Israel's new fighter arm first went into action that same day. On May 29, 1948, assisting the efforts to halt the Egyptian advance from Gaza northwards, four newly arrived Avia S-199s, flown by Lou Lenart, Modi Alon, Ezer Weizman and Eddie Cohen, struck Egyptian forces near Isdud. Although damage to the enemy was minimal, two aircraft were lost and Cohen killed, the attack achieved its goal and the Egyptians were stopped. This daytime attack was followed-up by a night bombing attack by a C-46 aircraft, and by light aircraft of the Tel Aviv squadron, and the Egyptian column never advanced any further into Israel.
Early the next morning Ezer Weizman and Milton Rubenfeld in their S-199s attacked an Iraqi column which was advancing towards Kfar Yona, just west of Tulkarm. In this battle, Rubenfeld landed hits on an attacking enemy aircraft, but his own aircraft was badly hit and he baled-out over the sea near Kfar Vitkin, whose residents assumed that he was an enemy pilot and fired at him as he descended in his parachute. Fortunately they missed hitting him, and in order to identify himself as a Jew, Rubenfeld ran towards the advancing Moshavniks with his hands raised above his head, and as he knew no Hebrew at all he kept yelling “Shabbes, Gefilte Fish”, “Shabbes, Gefilte Fish.” Having established his identity as a Jew, the Moshavniks took Rubenfeld to hospital in Netanya. His aircraft which had crashed into the sea was a total write-off. On 3rd June, Modi Alon was on a twilight patrol over Tel Aviv. He spotted a formation of four Egyptian aircraft approaching the city – two Spitfires escorting two Dakota C-47s. Alon swung out to sea to get the sun behind him and then swept in on the bombers. The Spitfire escort fled, and the citizens of Tel Aviv were able to watch as Alon made two passes and scored hits on both bombers one bomber crashed into the sand dunes south of Bat Yam, and the second bomber
crashed just south of Tel Nof Airfield. Tel Aviv was ecstatic. The country now felt that it had a real Air Force. Egyptian bombers never attacked Tel Aviv again, although Spitfires continued to harass the city.
The first dogfight against enemy fighters took place a few days later, on June 8, when Gideon Lichtaman shot down an Egyptian Spitfire.
Originally, the IAF consisted of a hodge-podge of commandeered or donated civilian aircraft converted to military use. A variety of obsolete and surplus ex-World War II combat aircraft were quickly sourced by various means to supplement this fleet. As the
war progressed more and more aircraft were procured, including Boeing B-17s, Bristol Beaufighters, de Havilland Mosquitoes and P51D Mustangs, leading to a shift in the balance of power.
The backbone of the IAF consisted of 25 Avia S-199s (purchased from Czechoslovakia, essentially Czechoslovak-built Messerschmitt Bf 109s) and 62 Supermarine Spitfire LF Mk IXEs.
The IAF was a unique Air Force in several respects – it was born at the same time as the State of Israel in May 1948; it was born in the heat of battle; and over 95% of the combat-trained air crews were World War II veterans (both Jewish and non-Jewish) who came as volunteers from 16 foreign lands, mainly from the Anglo-Saxon countries, to help Israel in its War of Independence. Escondido: Two Cited for Purchasing Alcohol for Minor
Agents of the California Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) along with the Escondido Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit cited two individuals for purchasing alcohol for a minor on Wednesday, January 23th. The citations were the result of a “Shoulder Tap” operation in which a minor under the direct supervision of department agents asked people entering stores that sell alcoholic beverages to purchase alcohol on his behalf. The two individuals, a 53year-old male from Redmond, Oregon, and a 41year-old female from Escondido, face fines of up to $250 and up to 32 hours of community service if convicted of the misdemeanor offense.

age of 21 have a higher rate of drunken driving fatalities than the general adult population.
Shoulder Tap operations have been conducted by local law enforcement throughout the state since the 1980s. In addition to Shoulder Tap operations, ABC and local law enforcement also conduct Minor Decoy operations in which underage decoys attempt to purchase alcohol. When the program first began, the violation rate of retail establishments selling to minors was as high as 40 to 50 percent. When conducted on a routine basis, the rate has dropped in some cities as low as 10 percent or even below.
No further information is known of the suspect. This case is pending further investigation. Prep Work Has Begun for Amgen Tour of California
In 1994, the California Supreme Court ruled unanimously that use of underage decoys is a valid tool of law enforcement to ensure that licensees and individuals are complying with the law.

requested, under the California Public Records Act, the results of the investigation together with copies of internal correspondence and emails dealing with the subject.
The city denied that request stating it was a personnel matter and thus were not required to divulge the results. Bull-pucky.
We believe this is a weak argument. We believe there is an exception to management personnel, that the expenditure of $17,600 of taxpayer money on said investigation should require full disclosure to those taxpayers, and that there is likely one or more laws that would compel the city of Escondido to release such information. Several prominent attorneys with whom we have consulted agree. Positions of Lieutenant
and above are “at will” employees. They are not union members, thus any union agreements as to personnel privacy issues do not apply.
Further, there is a requirement that any settlement the city enters into with any employee, or vendor, that exceeds $7,500 must be approved by the City Council. If there was any financial settlement with Chief Jim Maher to persuade him to “just walk away,” the city has a duty to run that by the council and the council, in good faith, should report that to the people.
Typically, the city takes a hard nose attitude which, essentially, says "go ahead; sue us," knowing full well that most individuals and/or smaller organizations are reluctant to take that action and incur $40,000-$50,000 in legal fees (though we understand if successful, plaintiff's attorney fees are reimbursable by the city). The question also arises if

this is an issue the ACLU would have an interest in exploring and/or pursuing?
We are a small weekly newspaper and do not have the budget to fund this legal action ourselves; there may be several individuals of means who may be willing to fund this action but that is yet to be determined.
It seems to us, as a matter of logic, fairness and equity, that the city should be compelled to release said information and, further, that this would be an appropriate case for the ACLU to explore, and/or a case in which a young attorney, eager to earn his ‘Commentary’ Cont. on Page 13

airstrike damaged the Egyptian ship's engines, enabling Israeli ships to reach it and capture it. The Six-Day War
In three hours on the morning of June 5, 1967, the first day of the Six Day War, the Israeli Air Force executed Operation Focus, crippling the opposing Arab air forces and attaining air supremacy for the remainder of the war. In a surprise attack, the IAF destroyed most of the Egyptian Air Force while its planes were still on the ground. By the end of the day, with surrounding Arab countries also drawn into the fighting, the IAF had mauled the Syrian and Jordanian air forces as well, striking as far as Iraq. After six days of fighting Israel claimed a total of 452 Arab aircraft destroyed, of which 49 were aerial victories. The War of Attrition
Shortly after the end of the Six-Day War, The Israeli Air Force undertook repeated bombings of strategic targets deep within enemy territory

“Man Up” – The Big Brothers Big Sisters Association of California is launching its first ever statewide campaign to recruit more male volunteers to become Big Brothers, and San Diego agency is leading the way to help reduce the wait list of 500 boys in San Diego County needing Big Brothers. With an average of nearly 70% boys on the waiting list for mentors, and only 37% new volunteers are men, boys are waiting an average of 275 days before receiving a Big Brothers. It’s time for California to “Man Up!” – the perfect time to play sports, go on a hike, eat pizza, or share your interests with a child who needs encouragement. The powerful role women play as role models to young girls is not minimized. The current need, however, is for men. All women who currently volunteer or agree that children need a caring adult in their lives are asked to recruit their male friends, associates and family members to become influencers for change. Basic requirements are to be over 18 years of age; have a valid Social Security number with no criminal background, and be available to volunteer for at least one year. Men and Spanishspeaking volunteers are in high demand. If you can’t volunteer, consider donating to help sponsor a waiting boy. To learn the statistics of those mentored compared to those not in the program; to learn about the six distinct programs, how you can positively impact a child’s life, donate, or volunteer, go to www.SDBigs.org or call 858.536.4900.

During the Yom Kippur War of October 1973, the Israeli Air Force shot down 334 enemy warplanes in air-to-air combat for the loss of only five of its own. Growth (1973–1982)
Since the war most of Israel's military aircraft have been obtained from the United States. Among these are the F4 Phantom II, A-4 Skyhawk, F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon.

Django Unchained A Review
by lyle e davis
“If you likes to watch bad white folks get shot to pieces, you be likin’ Django!”
finding and rescuing Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), the wife he lost to the slave trade long ago.
Not to worry. Django won’t be coming after us good white folks. He only hunts down the bad ones . . . the ones that have inflicted untold misery on him and his people.
Django will likely cause a lot of different feelings, as it did me, ranging from fist-pumping righteousness to vague moral unease and then, “wonder what’s gonna happen next!?”
The action is almost non-stop in this story set in the South two years before the Civil War. I thought the latest James Bond flick, “Skyfall” had lots of action, blood and guts. Django at least equals the action.
Django Unchained stars Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with Germanborn bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. Honing vital hunting skills, Django remains focused on one goal:
This is a spaghetti western story of justifiable vengeance, pure and simple, and no paleface is spared, even the good German who facilitates a slave’s transformation into a take-no-prisoners hunter of whites who trade in black flesh.
Django and Schultz's search ultimately leads them to Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), the proprietor of "Candyland," an infamous plantation. Exploring the compound under false pretenses, Django and Schultz arouse the suspicion of Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson), Candie's trusted house slave. -
This high stakes rebellion of a one-time slave developed into one of the most intriguing, provoking, appalling, hilarious, exhilarating, scathing and downright entertaining films yet.
The film runs long, two hours and 48 minutes. At one time I noticed my backside was getting sore from sitting so long. I just shifted position and enjoyed the film som more.
Probably the biggest single
surprise I had in the film was discovering, only after we had left the theatre, that Stephen, the house slave, was Samuel L. Jackson. Jackson in real life is a pleasant nut-brown; in the movie he was coal black and as often as I had seen him in films, I did not recognize him (but I learned quickly to dislike his evil characer).
While Jamie Foxx as Django is clearly the star, remarkable performances by Christopher Waltz as the good German dentist and bounty hunter, Dr. Schultz, comes close to stealing the show.
Leonardo DiCaprio was okay as the villanous plantation owner, but Stephen, his house slave, played by Samuel L. Jackson, was superb. He made you hate him. The Ku Klux Klan type mob and their Keystone Cop antics delivered some good lines and laughs, reminding one of “Blazing Saddles.” This is a good one.
Don’t miss it. It’s playing throughout North County.

gonna retire . . . one of these days. Relax, folks. Ain’t gonna happen.
You can’t get Anaya out of his harness . . . like a thoroughbred racer, he just keeps dropping in at the stable (which you and I would call an office). He doesn’t come in quite as often and doesn’t stay quite as long . . . so he is cutting back on his workload, but retire? Nope. It’s just not in him. (And, I’m kinda glad. I always enjoy popping in for a visit with Dan - being welcomed by that mischievous smile of his). ••••• Speaking of someone who just won’t, or can’t, retire . . check out ol’ Doug Best. Doug and I have worked together for over 40 years and he’s still plugging away every Saturday morning with his “Doug Best Swings” show on KKSS, 1320 AM Radio, every Saturday morning from 7am to 11am. Doug plays music from the big band era and brings back lots of musical memories for some of us who are a bit long in the tooth and remember music from back when it was really music. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Doug and his lovely wife, Lorene, celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on January 24th. Congratulations to two of the neatest people I’ve ever known.
Doug and I chat every Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m., live, on his radio program. During this conversation I reckon he and I solve just about every problem there is on this ol’ planet. ••••• Good pal Robert S. Jones recenly lost about 25 lbs. I need to shed a few lbs. myself so inquired as to how Robert did it. He completely eliminated carbohydrates from his diet for three days, then continued on a low carb diet. He also quit drinking as of the recent holidays.
I seldom drink so that part was easy . . . but in deciding to try and go on a no-carb diet I learned just how difficult that can be. Last ‘Man About Town’ Cont. on Page 14

the Iraqi nuclear facilities at Osiraq. Among the pilots that took part in the attack was the late Colonel Ilan Ramon, Israel's first astronaut. 1982 Lebanon War and its aftermath
Prior to the 1982 Lebanon War, Syria, with the help of the Soviet Union, had built up an overlapping network of surface-to-air missiles in Lebanon's Beqaa Valley. On June 9, 1982, the Israeli Air Force carried out Operation Mole Cricket 19, crippling the Syrian air defense array. In subsequent aerial battles against the Syrian Air Force, the IAF managed to shoot down 86 Syrian aircraft without losing a single fighter plane in an air to air combat. On October 1, 1985, in response to a PLO terrorist attack which murdered three Israeli civilians in Cyprus, the Israeli air force carried out Operation Wooden Leg destroying PLO headquarters and barracks were either destroyed or damaged. 1990s and beyond
Since the 1990s, the IAF has upgraded most of its aircraft with advanced Israeli-made systems, improving their performances.
In the late 1990s, the IAF began acquiring the F-15I Ra'am (Thunder) and the F16I Sufa (Storm), manufactured specially for Israel according to IAF requirements.
The Israeli Air Force took an extensive part in IDF operations during the al-Aqsa Intifada, including the controversial targeted killings of Palestinian militant leaders, most notably Salah Shakhade, Ahmed Yassin and Abed alAziz Rantissi. 2006 Lebanon War
The IAF played a critical role in the 2006 Lebanon War. IAF strikes – mainly, though not exclusively, in southern Lebanon – were aimed at stopping rocket launches by ‘The Israeli Air Force . . .’ Cont. on Page 13

In the recent 17 January issue about Indian Code Talkers by Frank Lorey III, it was mentioned the whole operation had been kept an official secret until about 1968. That piece of information is not as I personally remember.
I grew up in Southern California during the war and had heard word-of-mouth stories regarding Indian code talkers in the late 1940s from returning vets.
I saw the movie “Battle Cry” and read the 1953 book by Leon Uris in 1955/56. In both the book and movie, the Navajo code talkers were featured (along with some very confused Japanese wire tappers). The primary Navajo character in the book was named “Shining Lighttower.”

Escondido • Mayor Sam Abed How Can City Hall Help Your Business?
Big changes have been occurring in Escondido and along with it, public perception has changed dramatically too. Long considered a sleepy bedroom community of San Diego, in 2012 Escondido began to garner attention as a thriving, vibrant community on the cusp of transforming itself.
The driving force behind this transformation has been the City Council’s emphasis on economic development and its commitment to being a business-friendly community. As a result, it is important to me to personally
reach out to businesses. I meet with local businesses almost every week to learn more about them, to see how they are doing, and to find out what we can do to help keep them here and help them grow. Having a thriving business community not only means services and jobs for our residents, it also means revenue for our city which in turn can be spent on public safety, streets and parks and other quality of life amenities.”

Did you know all dogs four months and older should be licensed in the City of Vista? Licensed pets are more likely to be reunited with their owners if they become lost or rushed to an appropriate veterinarian if severely injured. Important health information about the pet can be placed in its licensing records, as well. The City of Vista’s animal licensing is managed by the San Diego County Humane Society’s North Campus in Oceanside.
The Humane Society is offering affordable licensing, vaccinations, and microchip events in 2013 in both Vista and Oceanside. Following is a schedule of these events. Pleases note that the dates are subject to change.

San Marcos • Mayor Jim Desmond Nighttime Freeway Closures on SR 78 to last 8 Weeks
Please be advised that for approximately eight weeks, beginning January 21, work on the SR 78 between Nordahl Road and Twin Oaks Valley Road will require intermittent nighttime freeway closures from 11:30 pm to 5 am.
These nighttime closures will allow crews to rehabilitate a portion of the SR 78 over Mission Road and finish constructing the eastbound auxil-
iary lanes. During these closures, motorists are urged to avoid the area if possible. Traffic delays are expected during construction. Signs will be in place to direct motorists through detours.
Residents and businesses in the area are also advised that heavy machinery will cause nighttime noise in the area during construction. The schedule for this freeway closure is subject to weather delays.

Rush Limbaugh Technology Guru?
The radio dial in each of our cars default to AM 640, talk radio. Occasionally, when we’re out and about, we get exposed to the Rush Limbaugh show. We enjoy Rush’s show for what it is, pure entertainment. Rush has his audience and he plays to it. Vampire Diaries, Justin Bieber and Rush are each supported by their particular demographic niche. Each share their public persona to please these fans. Rush appeals to folks who don’t like government or the leftist political philosophies embraced by present leaders of the Democrat party.
We tolerate Rush’s arrogance, ignorance and over-the-top rhetoric because he so deftly skewers the
State of Our State
During the State of the State address, the Governor expressed optimism for California’s future but failed to alleviate pessimism regarding California’s minimal economic growth.
There was little mention of job creation.
The Governor did reference the 1.3 million jobs lost in California, but provided no solutions to get Californians back to work. The goals he emphasized, including high speed rail, are not the remedy for our economy.
He also said education should be a priority and that local control is effective. I agree, but I also believe assessments are needed to show student progress and reliable funding is required to support our 6 mil-
arrogance, ignorance and over-thetop rhetoric of the current Washington ruling class. When we become frustrated with the way our country is being led, we find it therapeutic to hear Rush trash the hypocrisy of the academics, bureaucrats, lifetime politicos and assorted radicals running the country these days.
Unfortunately Rush stepped over the line last Tuesday. A caller asked Rush why Apple products are rumored to be more virus proof than PCs. It was an obvious set-up to give Rush an opportunity to chat up his bias for Apple stuff. We knew that Rush was an Apple user but until last Tuesday we simply wrote it of as a minor character flaw. To our horror Rush proceeded to expose himself as a full-fledged “Apple Fanboy.”
Rush cleared his throat and, in his pompous, stentorian voice, began to lecture his listeners on virtues of Apple, the sins of Microsoft and the difference between PCs and Macs. It was immediately evident that he had not the slightest clue. His “expertise” came straight from Steve Jobs’ pocket manual “The twin paths to enlightenment,” a tract carried by all Apple employees. The principles are deceptively simple. First a slavish devotion to any product with an Apple logo and second, complete ignorance of any competing technology or product.
When Rush finished we were stunned. Rush is supposed to be a conservative and yet Apple cult “fanboys” are mainly urban young adults, old hippies and retired K-12 teachers, a decidedly Liberal gaggle. Rush didn’t fit any of those demographics. We began to wonder about Rush. Liberalism and Appleism are both products of emotion and exclusion. Conservatism on the other hand is rooted in reason and acceptance. Certainly Rush’s rants often seem to be more emotion than reason. Could Rush be a closet liberal, a Trojan horse bent on discrediting conservatism? Is it possible that Rush is not a conservative at all but simply a pragmatic opportunist like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton getting rich by inciting and exploit-
ing social and political strife?
We simply don’t know what to believe any more. It’s as if Newt Gingrich came out of the closet and signed up for food stamps and Obamacare. How can we even be sure that the Jane Fonda urinal targets advertised on Rush’s website are really bio-degradable. It’s most distressing.
Judging by the amount of Internet traffic relating to the now famous “Limbaugh Lecture” Rush will be concentrating on damage control for the next week or so. I sure hope the poor fellow took our advice and dumped his Apple stock when it peaked last year.

The city will have to front $475,000 to cover hosting costs. Hotels in Rancho Bernardo and Rancho Penasquitos will house the cyclists and their entourage. Thus far, only $81,000 has been raised.
Joyce Masterson, the city official heading up race preparation, says plans are to have something going on every day of the week during the race. This year Escondido will be both the starting and finish line so for this leg of the tour, a much larger crowd is anticipated, thus plans are moving forward quickly. San Marcos Hits “The Big 5-OH”

Tuesday, for example, I was being a good boy and did not put any pancakes or hash browns on my plate while having breakfast at my Hidden Valley Kiwanis Cub meeting. I had lots of fruit and a meat stew when, Tim Cunning, my table mate and Lieutenant Governor of our Kiwanis Division, pointed out that I was eating carbs. He pointed out that the watermelon, pineapple and honeydew melon I was eating, all had carbs. He even looked up on his Smartphone and showed me how Pineapple was 70% carbs.

become the sleek, athletic and godlike figure I once was. ••••• Bruce Krider, he of the Palomar Health District board of directors, just returned from a holiday in Costa Rica. It was not the happiest of holidays in that his resort was far distant from the major metropolitan areas and was reached only via rather bad roadways. Once they arrived at the resort it was quite nice . . . but they had gotten lost several times en route (thanks to a brotherin-law who, like so many of us men, refused to stop and ask directions). Fortunately, Bruce speaks fluent Spanish and after several dead ends he was able to figure out the right roads and made it to the resort. He and his wife Laura did get rested up but if and when they return to Costa Rica, will likely pick a resort
closer to civilization and all of the comforts therein.
Bruce is also the head of The Puppy Coalition, an organization that works to keep puppies and dogs from being needlessly euthanized. You’ll be learning more about this wonderful organization as The Paper has fully embraced this program and will work diligently for its success. ••••• Took a pleasant drive over to Valley Center this Monday. Beautiful day. Stopped at a fascinating little building with a sign on it that said, “The Little Barn Bakery.” Went inside and met the owner, Diana Sourbeer. She has shelf full of all types of granola, cookies, all kinds of baked goods and other natural foods. She just opened in July and already has developed quite a reputation for great and healthy foods. She’s at 29277C Valley Center Road; Check her out at: www.dianasgranola.com.

Everyone wants teeth that, once restored, “Brighten Your Smile” and give you that overall “Glow” your face has begun to miss as we age and begin to wrinkle and tarnish a bit. The old metal crowns had been replaced in the mid-1960’s by porcelain jacket crowns. But
Today, along with the development of newer cements, the modern day all-ceramic crowns have arrived. These new systems not only stay bonded to teeth well, they can also be categorized into two groups: those that are translucent and very natural in appearance and those that are more opaque having a higherstrength core that resists extreme chewing forces. Both
are fabricated without a metal backing and, therefore, do not show their metal (called “shine through”) up by the gum line as their owner’s gums recede with age.
There are several companies producing various formulations of these ceramics and supplying them to the dental labs for crowns and bridges. Just to keep it simple, the opaque, stronger crowns are made from a Zirconia core and used in posterior teeth because they can withstand the stronger forces exerted in that region. The translucent, more color adjustable crowns are made from a pressured ceramic and are thus mostly used for anterior teeth. For those who have very strong bites and/or grind at night we
now have a third option which allows us to “layer” porcelain onto the Zirconia based crowns resulting in stronger anterior teeth that won’t chip with their nighttime grinding!
In general the dentist will pick the appropriate cosmetic crown for you based on several factors including how much support is needed, whether the teeth are discolored, how much of the tooth is remaining, whether it will show when you’re speaking, eating, smiling, etc., as well as how much clearance you have with the opposing teeth, where your gum line is located, and finally, the color of your teeth. If you have an “unusual” color disposition, then the translucent crown may be the best choice!
