I don’t remember when, where, or why I first heard Garrison Keillor on the radio. But I remember I liked him.
Somehow, I had stumbled across this radio program called, “A Prairie Home Companion,” and here was this voice . . . a pleasant baritone voice, down-home voice . . . kinda like people I had known in my home state of Minnesota and my adopted state of Nebraska. Except he didn’t have the singsong cadence of an AmericanNorwegian that my Minnesota cousins have to this day. (They swear they don’t have a Norwegian or Minnesota accent. They do.) “Yeah, well I’m gonna go inta town and get me some groceries, ya shure you betcha.”
(It’s hard to write a Norwegian accent; even more difficult to write a Minnesota accent, or one from North or South Dakota. You kinda had to be there to hear it to know just what it sounds like. If you saw the movie “Fargo,” that’s how folks really talk in Minnesota and the Dakotas.)
Still, the program intrigued me. This fella who talked on the program, the narrator, clearly understood the psyche of the midwesterner . . . and, in particular, those folks who either intentionally or by accident of birth, wound up living in Minnesota. Turns out there’s a good reason for that. He’s one of them.
I found out his birth name Gary Edward Keillor and that he was born on August 7, 1942, in Anoka, Minnesota. We don’t really know where the name “Garrison” came from . . . but, somehow, it has stuck
I’ve been to Anoka. I think, if memory serves me correctly, I did some fishing there. Fishing is big in Minnesota and usually halfway decent. It is a given, for example, that if you get skunked on walleye or northern pike (some Minnesotans, like my grandma, called them “Norderns”) The Paper - 760.747.7119

you’d always catch fish, provided you were willing to settle for bullheads. I’ve run out of worms and used a piece of red handkerchief for bait. And I caught plenty of bullheads. Bullheads are not the smartest of fish.
I don’t know if Garrison Keillor was, or is, a fisherman. He doesn’t seem to talk about it all that much. I suspect he’s more of a people watcher. An observer. Someone who takes great delight in noticing the mannerisms of others and storing that information in his mind for later retrieval when telling a
story and constructing characters for that story.
In 1969, he somehow wangled a job on Minnesota Public Radio. It was here, apparently, where his idea for what was to become “A Prairie Home Companion” was born. That was, in fact, the name of his morning radio program. Five years later, he transformed the show into a live broadcast, borrowing the name from his earlier program. It is still going strong today after a brief hiatus from 1987 to 1989. Those of you who have listened know that a popular part of A
Prairie Home Companion is Keillor's weekly monologue set in the quiet, fictional Minnesota town of Lake Wobegon, "where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average." The show also features musical guests, imaginary commercials and skits.
When Keillor describes the townfolk of Lake Wobegone, those of us who lived at one time or another in Minnesota immediately recall the lovely little old ladies at the local Lutheran Church who would gather and gossip and discuss the sinful ways of their sisters

and brethren and how they were sure to be condemned to the gates of hell for the awful things they had done or said. All of this conversation was in quiet, whispered conversations, of course, and the condemnations to hell were done in the most Christian manner possibe. Given the circumstances.
“Well, my cousin Ingrid, and she never lies, told me she heard from her cousin, Raghnild, who also never lies, what all that temptress, Ambjorg, had done . . . we need to pray for her soul, that’s for shure.” With its offbeat mix of humor, heart and song, A Prairie Home Companion has developed a substantial following with more than 17 million people a week tuning in to hear the show. Keillor also turned the show into a major motion picture directed by the late, legendary Robert Altman. In addition to writing the screenplay, he also appeared in the film alongside the likes of Meryl Streep, Lindsay Lohan and Kevin Kline.
He would develop a live program on his radio show which, as it grew, started to feature

Father O'Malley rose from his bed one morning. It was a fine spring day in his new west Texas mission parish. He walked to the window of his bedroom to get a deep breath of the beautiful day outside. He then noticed there was a jackass lying dead in the middle of his front lawn. He promptly called the local police station. The conversation went like this: "Good morning. This is Sergeant Jones. How might I help you?”
"And the best of the day te yerself. This is Father O'Malley at St. Ann 's Catholic Church. There's a jackass lying dead in me front lawn and would ye be so kind as to send a couple o'yer
skits, songs, fake commercials and stories about that fictional Minnesota town called Lake Wobegon.
His Lake Wobegon reminds me a great deal of the small Minnesota towns in which I frolicked as a kid, visiting from the big city of Omaha, Nebraska. (As opposed, I suppose, to any other Omaha.)
Lake Wobegon is probably more patterned after Anoka but it reminded me a lot of Windom, Minnesota, where I was hatched . . . and a little of Bergen, Minnesota, where I would play on the farm with my cousin, Doug Leverenz. (Bergen was a huge metropolis. It had a gas station/cafe, grocery store, (owned by the Flatgaard family) a creamery and a meat locker, a couple churches. And a population of about 35 people. I found out that Keillor is a Golden Gopher, having studied at the University of Minnesota, then became a radio announcer and, before long, began to write for The New Yorker. Pretty heady stuff for a kid from Anoka, Minnesota. But, it turns out, Keillor was something of a scholar. And a writer. And he blended all those talents together and became a triple threat personality.
lads to take care of the matter?”
Sergeant Jones, considering himself to be quite a wit and recognizing the foreign accent, thought he would have a little fun with the good father, replied, "Well now Father, it was always my impression that you people took care of the last rites!”
There was dead silence on the line for a long moment…….
Father O'Malley then replied: "Aye, 'tis certainly true; but we are also obliged to notify the next of kin first, which is the reason for me call." Golf and Two Old Guys
A couple of old guys were golfing when one mentioned that he was going to go to Dr. Smith for a new set of dentures in the morning.
His elderly buddy remarked that he, too, had gone to the very same dentist two years before.
"Is that so?" asked the first old guy. "Did he do a good job?"
The second oldster replied, "Well, I was on the golf course yesterday when a guy on the next fairway hooked a shot. The ball must have been going at least 200 mph when it smacked me right in the groin."
With a vivid imagination and an ability to tell entirely fictional stories about fictional people and make it all sound real, and make you think you knew those characters in his stories, he was well on his way.
It helped me to accept the premise of “A Prairie Home Companion,” as being an accurate portrayal of the life and culture of the midwest because Keillor frequently would refer to a John Tollefson. It happens that my mom’s maiden name was Tollefson. Hazel Tollefson, daughter of Henry and Bella Tollefson, who married Howard K. Davis, of Nebraska and, together, they had me.
There are a fair number of Tollefson’s in Minnesota. Being a genealogist, I have checked most of them out and know which ones are mine and which ones aren’t.
John Tollefson is not one of mine. He is one of Garrison Keillor’s. He is, however, a fairly prominent member of Lake Wobegon, thanks to Keillor.
Those of you who have not heard “A Prairie Home Companion” will have a chance to see what it’s all about on Thursday, February 5th, at the
The first old guy was confused and asked, "What the hell does that have to do with your dentures?" "It was the first time in two years my teeth didn't hurt....." Thanks . . . I think . . .

Center for the Arts, Escondido. Tickets run $35 to $75. I assume the $75 tickets allow you to sit on Keillor’s lap as he tells his stories.
The press releases say, “America’s favorite storyteller will entertain audiences with his comic monologues, hilarious anecdotes and thought-provoking observations, delivered with his signature “down comforter voice.” And that sounds about right. I’m told that Keillor’s show will NOT be the typical “A Prairie Home Companion,” but will feature Keillor telling his stories, giving forth with his monologues, and perhaps, just perhaps, introduce his “Guy Noir, Private Detective,” character. We don’t know yet whether Keillor will wear his trademark red shoes or not.
And so it is that we are to enjoy the soothing baritone voice of one Garrison Keillor this coming Thursday. We are told that his “An Evening with Garrison Keillor” will include his recounting of Lutheran stories. Lutherans are a favorite target for Keillor and more often than not, they wind up in the punchline. I

Tollefson referring to Lutherans as “Luterns.” In fact, as a recall, I was first baptized in a “Lutern” church. (I later broke away to get married in a Baptist Church, to teach Sunday School at a Presbyterian Church . . . before leaving all churches for all time and becoming a full time, practicing heathen.) I don’t suppose Keillor will have any stories about heathens.
I am told that we will also manage to vicariously suffer through the Midwest winters and we may even get involved in a lively discussion about delicious bologna sandwiches. His acerbic comments about cute little kitty cats are well known (he’s not fond of them.) I am a brother under the skin with him on this issue. I tolerate them . . . but I don’t love them. Not too much, anyway.
There will, no doubt, be a few dissenters in the audience who side with the great American humorist Mark Twain who once said: “When a man loves cats, I am his friend and comrade, without further introduction.”
The analogy to Twain’s comment is particularly apt because, in many ways, Keillor is a modern day reincarnation of Samuel Clemens, aka Mark Twain.
We in the audience who represent the demographic Keillor appeals to are generally white folks, getting on in years, and a goodly number of us grew up in, or at least have more than a passing famliarity with, the Midwest. I am told the show is nearing a sellout so expect to see a lot of gray heads in the audience . . . at least those who still have hair. (Generally, I’m speaking of the men in the audience.)
Keillor has a fan club of sorts generally referred to as “Prairie Dogs,” a spin-off from his long running show, “A Prairie Home Companion.” There will likely be more than a few Prairie Dogs in the audience. Oh, I’m sure there will also be visits with the people of Lake Wobegon, and discussions about late-life fatherhood. He has a lovely, wonderful, dry sense of humor, this Keillor fella does, and he has been able to captivate audiences for years with his magical blend of his unique blend of comedy,
Escondido, CA—In a 2002 issue of Neurosurgical Focus, a peerreviewed article was published by a Dr. Michael D. Martin, MD et al. in which the third sentence states: “The disc itself is active tissue that contains significant mechanisms for self-repair.” That article was published by a neurosurgeon and written direct-ly for neurosurgeons.
“The Disc Itself Is Active Tissue...”
So what does that really mean to us? It tells us that the disc itself does have a God-given ability to heal and repair if provided the proper mechanisms for self-healing. There is a specific mechanism inherent in each of the spinal discs called the “pump mechanism of disc nutri-tion” (see Fig 1). When this mechanism is not working properly, the spinal discs will begin to die causing bulges, herniations, and eventually spinal stenosis.
The spinal disc is one of the very few tissues in the body that does not have a direct blood supply for circulation. The only way that the disc gets the circulation of water, oxygen and nutrients for self-repair is via this specific disc pump mechanism. What happens when you decrease cir-culation in any type of tissue, whether it be animal tissue, plant tissue or human tissue? Exactly, it begins to become weak and begins to degenerate.

Just how captivating he is can be attested to by the fact that he is heard on 900 public radio stations each week. delivering more than 17 million listeners each week. As if that were not enough, he also manages to write prolifically. He’s had a syndicated column with the Chicago Tribune and columns for the New York Times, both rather sizable newspapers. No real competition for The Paper, but still . . . Keillor is also the best-selling author of many books, including “Lake Wobegon Days,” “The Book of Guys” and “Life Among the Lutherans.” In 2013 he published his first book of poetry, “O, What a Luxury: Verses Lyrical, Vulgar, Pathetic & Profound.” In his leisure time, rumor has it, he also produces his weekly show on public radio, the aforementioned “Prairie Home Companion.” So how does a young college student rise through the ranks in the entertainment world and become something of a legend?
We’ve already covered the basics - how he got his start. But his family background is also interesting . . . dad, John Phillip Keillor, was a carpenter
brown leaves are the plant’s problem? Of course not, the leaves turning brown is just a condition that is telling you that there is something wrong with the plant. The plant is unhealthy and needs water and nutrients. You could spray paint the leaves green but it just covers up the condition. The underlying problem still exists and will continue to produce brown leaves until you fix the actual problem. and tingling that most experience with bulging, herni-ated or degenerative discs are NOT the problem. The definition of a symptom: “something that indicates the existence of something else.” It is just like the dashboard of your car telling you that something is wrong (brake lights out, engine needs checked, overheating, etc.) Those lights that appear in your car dash are NOT the problem. You can remove the lights surgically or put a piece of duct tape over the lights but the problem will NOT be fixed...the problem is still present.
Let’s take a look at a plant for example...if the leaves on a plant begin to turn brown, would you say that the

He will sit down with you and go over your condition with you in complete detail. You will know exactly what is causing all your pain (or other symptoms).
In your spine, when the pump mechanism of disc nutrition fails, the disc will begin to de-generate and become weak. This weakness in the disc is what produces the bulging, herniated, and degenerative discs.
The treatment that is provided at Dr. Heilman’s Spine and Neuropathy Care Center in Escondido is revolutionary and is specifically designed to artificially re-create the pump mecha-nism in the discs which allows the spinal discs to heal and re-pair. The best part of the treat-ment is that it uses no drugs, no injections, and no surgery. Plus it’s painless and many patients relax and fall asleep while un-dergoing the treatment. The amount of treatment needed to allow the discs to heal and repair varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and orthopedic evaluation. On Saturday, January 24, at about 4:50 am, officers from the Escondido Police Department were dispatched to the 2300 block of E. Valley Pkwy regarding a serious injury collision involving a truck and a pedestrian. Officers arrived and located the pedestrian face down in the roadway, unresponsive, with significant visible injuries. The involved vehicle, a red Chevy pickup, was on its side in a parking lot south of the roadway. The pedestrian, positively identified as 59-year-old Escondido resident Richard Allen Hensley. died as a result of his injuries. The truck occupants, an unlicensed 17 year old male Valley Center resident (driver) and a 17 year old female Escondido resident (passenger), were uninjured.
Based on driver statements and evidence at the scene, preliminary investigation shows the driver of the pickup fell asleep at the wheel while driving W/B on Valley Pkwy. The pickup drifted in a southerly direction, crossed over the E/B lanes, left the roadway, collided with an ATT phone junction box, struck the pedestrian who was on the south sidewalk, and flipped onto its side. Letters to the Editor
The Mighty Mississippi
Mr. Davis, thanks for your article on the Mississippi. I lived in the town of Muscatine, Iowa in 1969/70 for one year, and can tell you that it was a nice little town. The residents who live in river towns are just a little different than most other folks, as they generally have a more independent spirit and do not want to be told how to do anything, good or bad. This is just my own opinion, and everyone is entitled to it. Getting to your story and the Hannibal visit, you stated there is no photo of Tom Sawyer. According to an article I read in the Smithsonian Magazine some few years ago, Mark Twain kept company with a saloon, tavern or bar
owner/good friend in San Francisco when he was a resident there. This owner had the ability to tell some very good stories, which Twain loved to do himself. I can only imagine the stories flying around. The first liar wouldn’t stand a chance. One of the stories the friend told was, The Jumping Frog Contest of Calaveras County, according to the article. This friend’s name was Tom Sawyer, and had probably never been to Hannibal, MO. The Smithsonian story had a very good photo of the two of them in Sawyer’s establishment, kicking back in a couple of wooden arm chairs. If you’d like to follow up on this, and perhaps bring your Hannibal tour guides up to speed on Tom Sawyer, I think you have enough information to follow up on this if you are interested. Happy hunting. /s/Roger Hufferd, Oceanside, CA
PS. I look forward to the latest issue of The Paper. Keep up the good work.

An old fogey like me can’t help but smile when I see these little tykes, average age of three, practicing their tap dance steps, their ballet movements, and the most important part of the dance class . . . seeing Tampaw, smiling, and waving at him.
I never dreamed being a grandpa could be this much fun. There are about 10 kiddies in the class, and two sepa-

I suspect the dance company is making a mighty good living . . . and that’s fine. They work wonderfully well with the kiddies and everyone seems to be having a great time, including parents and grandparents. ••••• I reckon there are more than a few of us living in North San Diego County who are thanking our lucky stars we had the wisdom to move out here from back in the midwest or back east . . . particularly when we hear of the historic blizzard

Hundreds of bills have been introduced since the Legislature convened for the 2015-2016 session January 5th. Bills must be delivered to the Legislative Counsel’s office by the end of January so that final bill language can be developed by the February 27 deadline.
Though my legislative package is incomplete, I have already introduced a number of bills. Among these, Assembly Bill 14 has been garnering a great deal of interest. The bill will create the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Task Force that will be responsible for establishing a comprehensive plan within FAA guidelines for the operation of unmanned aircraft in California. The task force will develop a broad policy that safeguards individuals’ privacy rights while allowing public and private use of drones. This issue must be addressed at the state level so that provisional

I am also introducing Assembly Bill 59, which will extend the initial period of court-ordered out-patient treatment under “Laura’s Law” from six months to up to one year. Extending Laura’s Law will ensure that assisted outpatient treatment is available to severely mentally ill persons regardless of the county in which they live. It is intended to stabilize these individuals and significantly reduce violence, hospitalizations, arrests and incarcerations. Extended treatment will allow severely mentally ill patients to continue to receive the vital services they need and help ensure the safety of the public. I will be providing more information about my legislative package soon.

The market, which is open Saturday mornings at the County Courthouse in Vista, got going in 1981, making it one of oldest certified farmers markets in the state. It started back in 1980 when a Vista couple, Dick and Margo Baughman spearheaded the effort to get the market off the ground with area farmers.
It is now located at the County Courthouse on Melrose Drive becasue of construction of the new city hall where it had been located for years. In the early years, the Baughmans were among about a dozen farmers selling their produce.

‘Lucky Lindy’ – ‘The Lone Eagle’
Charles Augustus Lindbergh, born Feb. 4, 1902, was an American aviator, author, inventor, explorer, and social activist, but most famous for his 1927 historic non-stop solo flight across the Atlantic from New York to Paris. British aviators John Alcock and Arthur Brown successful traversed the Atlantic eight years before "Lucky Lindy." Alcock and Brown flew a modified Vickers WWI plane from New Foundland to Ireland. He took off May 20, from Roosevelt Field on Long Island,
landing nearly 3,000 miles later at Le Bourget Field in Paris. Lindbergh was flying a speciallydesigned mono plane built by San Diego’s Ryan Aircraft. As a result of this flight, Lindbergh was the first person in history to be in New York one day and Paris the next. Lindbergh, a U.S. Army Air Corps Reserve officer, also was awarded the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his historic, recordbreaking feat. During the late ‘20s and through the 1930s, Lindbergh was the most popular man in America – possibly the world. Lindbergh used his fame to promote the development of both commercial aviation and Air Mail services in the United States and the Americas. In March 1932, his infant first-born son, Charles, Jr., was kidnapped and murdered in what was soon dubbed the "Crime of the Century." It was described by journalist H.L. Mencken, as "... the biggest story since the resurrection." The kidnapping eventually led to the Lindbergh family's being "driven into voluntary exile" in Europe, to which they sailed in secrecy from New York under assumed names in late December 1935, in order to seek a safe, secluded home away from the wild public hysteria. Charles and Anne Lindbergh returned to the United States in April 1939. Before the United States formally

entered World War II, in December 1941, Lindbergh had been an outspoken advocate of keeping the U.S. out of the world conflict, as had his father, U.S. Rep. Charles August Lindbergh, R-Minn., during World War I. Before Pearl Harbor, in apparent protest, “The Lone Eagle” had resigned his Army Air Corps colonel’s commission. Although Lindbergh was a vocal leader in the anti-war America First movement, he nevertheless strongly supported the war effort after Pearl Harbor. He flew 50 combat missions in the Pacific Theater of World War II as a civilian consultant, though President Franklin D. Roosevelt had refused to reinstate his Army Air Corps colonel's commission of which “The Lone Eagle” had resigned. However, historians speculate just how serious Lindbergh was concerning his America First advocacy. Years after his death, classified documents were uncovered that indicated Lindbergh had made a number of trips to Nazi Germany, acting as a secret agent for the U.S. War Department. While he was invited by Germany to tour their aircraft manufacturing facilities and to see the new Luftwaffe’s air armada, reportedly, Lindbergh was taking careful notes and reporting back to the Army Air Corps about the Nazi buildup.
But, there was more discovered about the famed airman’s private life after his 1974 death. A German biography revealed Lindbergh was quite unlike his clean-cut, shy Boy Scout image. He had fathered no less than seven children to three secret European mistresses. In July 2003, some 29 years after Lindbergh's 1974 death, one of the largest national daily newspapers in Germany reported he had fathered three out-of-wedlock children by a German hat maker Brigitte Hesshaimer. Two years later it was further revealed Lindbergh had fathered four other out-of-wedlock children with two other mistresses in Germany and Switzerland. All

While wellness and fitness, both physically and mentally, are noble goals, they leave out one important ingredient. “What does it profit a man if he gains the world and loses his soul?” asked Jesus.
He was talking about the spiritual, a God awareness, a touch of holiness. His follower, Paul, compliments physical discipline, but says it is of less importance, but godliness is profitable for all things. It holds promise for this present life and also for the life to come. I would encourage adding this aspect of fitness to make the others complete.

Following each election, the Escondido City Council holds a workshop to develop its Action Plan for the next two years. The Action Plan represents the City Council’s collective vision for Escondido’s future and the strategies that will be used to achieve that vision. On February 11, 2015, the City Council will hold a public workshop at 12:30 p.m. in the Mitchell Room at City Hall to identify and discuss key policy goals. During that meeting, council members will share
their ideas for city priorities. Once the priorities have been identified, City staff members will identify the current reality in each of those areas and develop strategies to achieve the City Council’s goals, as well as evaluation measures. Then a final document will be prepared for final Council approval.
I have been very pleased by the progress we have achieved through our 2013-2014 Action Plan and look forward to continued success with our new plan. By the way, if you are interested in knowing how successful the 2011-2012 Council Action Plan was, the Council will hear a final report on it at the March 4, 2015 City Council meeting at 4:30 p.m.

Microsoft, Operating Systems and Windows 10 - Part I
This series of columns will focus on the history and evolution of Microsoft’s operating systems (OS) up to and including the yet to be released Windows 10. We can tell this story from a more intimate perspective than just about anyone because we’ve been involved since the dawn of the PC age nearly thirty five years ago.
As Operations Vice President at Megatek Corp in the early 1980s I spearheaded the project to design graphics engines (video cards) for the earliest Microsoft DOS based IBM PCs. In the late 1980s, as VP of Operations for Packard Bell I was responsible for mass producing PCs during the transition from DOS to Windows. In the mid 1990s as Operations VP for PC manufacturer Vision Technologies, we witnessed the birth of Windows 95. As owners of
the Computer Factory we have manufactured, upgraded and repaired thousands of PCs with DOS, Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista, 7 and 8X for the past twenty years. We’ve experienced this history where the “rubber meets the road,” building and fixing PCs for business and home end users. We’ve embraced Microsoft’s good efforts (Windows 98, XP and 7), and helped our customers avoid the lemons (Windows ME, Vista and 8X.) Today Microsoft is struggling to replace Windows 8X, an operating system so completely rejected that it pushed PC sales into reverse for the first time in the history of the industry.
It seems ludicrous to think that Microsoft would deliberately release products that don’t meet their customer’s needs. In America we believe that companies succeed by providing exactly what their customers want and yet Microsoft has repeatedly tried to force feed unpopular products to a captive audience. This behavior is rooted in the fact that Microsoft has a near monopoly in PC operating systems. They know that PC users really have no choice but to accept whatever Microsoft provides. That allows Microsoft to do what it feels is best for Microsoft instead of what is best for its customers. They have often based their product development on corporate strategies rather than user needs. Windows 8X is probably the most flagrant abuse of its customers but deception has long been a part of Microsoft’s culture.
The Doctor is In! rials were.
An Impression You Won't Choke On!
In 1984 the first "digital" impression was introduced into the world of dentistry. This meant that instead of having to fill a patients mouth with impression materials, digital images could be taken with a miniature camera and once stitched together, could be used to fabricate a model on which a crown or bridge could be made. This was a real advantage because the patient wouldn't be drooling and/or choking on the impression material waiting for it to set up, a process normally taking 3-5 minutes! On the other hand, the scanners at the time were VERY EXPENSIVE and many doctors felt these first prototypes were not as accurate at the impression mate-
Fast Forward to today: Along with the advances in computer technology, computer imaging has progressed by leaps and bounds. Along with this, the number of competitive dental imaging companies has exploded. Now, instead of taking images of just one tooth, we can scan full arches. Two methods are now in use and competing with each other. One, takes still images and "stitches" together these images into a data base that can be transmitted over the internet to the lab for model fabrication to make a crown, bridge or denture. The other method uses video capturing and essentially does the same thing with regards to stitching and transmitting that data to the lab. Both systems, whether it be a series of still pictures or a video capture of the image, produce accurate replicas of your mouth and from the models produced, can allow the laboratory to fabricate beautiful restorations. Past systems required fairly large units, called cart systems,
When Vista debuted as a monumental flop in 2007 Bill Gates proclaimed it to be “the best operating system ever.” He knew better. In 2008 Microsoft created and publicized “the Mojave experiment” in which their “blind survey” proved that 90% of people simply loved Vista. Vista continued to rival ME (AKA Microsoft Edsel) for the title of “worst ever” Microsoft OS until it was mercifully euthanized by Windows 7 in 2010. If customer acceptance is the criteria, that debate ended two years ago when Windows 8X swept to victory in the “worst OS ever” sweepstakes. At its recent two-year anniversary Windows 8X had achieved only 14% market penetration. Even lowly Vista had 21% market penetration by its second birthday.
of the PCs in the universe has facilitated the rapid development of technologies and applications that have changed our lives, mostly for the better. Those of us who remember the 1960s and 70s appreciate the luxury of being able to develop applications and products for a single operating system instead of having to pick and choose among the dozens that existed in the pre-Microsoft computer age.
that represented look a likes to R2D2 when used in the dental office, and required special software programs (closed systems) specific to their particular manufacturer in order to communicate that information to the lab (i.e. proprietary software). If your lab didn't have the right software, you were out of luck! However, now most newer systems are "open" and all labs can take them. In addition, the newest systems have traded the old mobile units (sorry R2D2!) for USB connections that can be used on any computer!
your dentist's office you might be surprised if you need a crown, bridge or even a denture (coming soon!). The "early adoption" phase of digital impressions is moving into the "becoming widely accepted" phase.
Microsoft is among the most successful companies in the World. The fact that Microsoft’s operating systems are used on over 90%
So, the next time you're in
Microsoft competes in an incredibly dynamic business environment. Their OS and other product development decisions must not only anticipate customer needs but also defend Microsoft against competitors large and small who covet Microsoft’s dominance. Microsoft’s primary objective is to survive in shark infested waters. Survival comes first, customers come second. How that affects Microsoft’s product offerings is the subject of this series of columns.
With more manufacturers entering the market and more competitive pricing as well as wider acceptance and use, you may be pleasantly surprised to find your dentist "scanning" your mouth without the old impression materials and enjoying a much more comfortable experience! Looks like 2015 will be a great year to see your dentist after all!

Would You Consider Helping Save Rescued Dogs by Fostering Them?
The Puppy Coalition Foundation rescues many dogs from regional kill shelters. These dogs are often rescued on their last day of life in these “shelters.” The recipe for providing a foster home for a rescued dog is simple:
1.) A little space for a doggie bed somewhere in your home. We will even provide a bed. 2.) Spend a little time with the dog to go out and do “their business” and get some exercise walking. We like to suggest at least 45 minutes over the course of the day. More is great. These dogs are house-broken.
3.) Then add love. These dogs crave love because in the preceding months they have gotten little and they all yearn for close relationships with humans. The Puppy Coalition will provide dog food and handle veterinary needs.
We will work around your schedule to show the foster dogs to those who may be interested and potential adopters. We believe that you will find it personally rewarding helping a rescued dog to get a fresh start in a new life. If you would like to learn more about this opportunity to volunteer to help save some of these wonderful animals, call Bruce at 760-612-9156. Can You Sell?
If So . . . let’s talk.
