Editor’s Note: A fighter ace is a military aviator credited with shooting down several enemy aircraft during aerial combat. The actual number of aerial victories required to officially qualify as an "ace" has varied, but is usually considered to be five or more. The few aces among combat pilots have historically accounted for the majority of air-to-air victories in military history. The Paper - 760.747.7119

This story is about a hero who downed seven enemy aircraft in one day. by Frank Lorey III
Retired Navy Captain Stanley W. "Swede" Vejtasa has earned a lot of distinctions in a military career ranging from World War II until 1970, including being the only WWII carrier pilot to receive Navy Crosses for
both dive-bombing and aerial combat. He shot down three Mitsubishi A6M2 Zeros while flying his favorite plane--the Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless dive bomber, and if that wasn't enough to foretell his future as a fighter pilot, he went on to bag seven Japanese planes in one mission flying a Grumman F4F Wildcat. Vejtasa's career started before the war in the Curtiss SBC-3 biplane dive bomber, then he
got the chance to upgrade to the Dauntless, which he calls "the best airplane of its time." He felt that the SBD was such an improvement that he wrote several letters recommending it be tried as a fighter, and his experience at the battle of Coral Sea later demonstrated that he knew what he was talking about. The Dauntless was generally considered obsolete right from the start of the war, and

the Navy was forever trying to come up with a replacement. No real consideration was given to it as an offensive aerial combat plane, with only .30-caliber machine guns with tube sights for the pilot, and a rear-seat gunner manning another machine gun that was moveable. These were considered defensive weapons, but Vejtasa was about to show what they could actually do. He had already helped the Japanese lose some carriers with his dive-bombing ability, winning one Navy Cross. "On May 8, 1942, we were on anti-torpedo plane patrol off the U.S.S. Yorktown [CV-5], not in what I considered a proper formation, and positioned too close to our carriers," he related. At that point, seven Zeros bounced them from out of the sun, shooting down four of the Dauntless planes, with eight more Zeros scattering the rest of the survivors as they tried to evade the faster Japanese fighters. In a defensive maneuver, three of the SBD's followed Vejtasa,
including his CO, Commander Bill Birch.
Lt.
"Birch had eyes that were incredible--he could spot the enemy before anybody else could," Vejtasa remembered. "We then turned into and under the Zeros, and the only way we could get a shot was to turn up into them and keep our speed up." The battle went on for about twenty minutes, with Swede using this strategy to attack the Zeros, while they made several head-on passes at him, firing 20-mm. cannon. There were several near-collisions in the raging battle. He could repeatedly see their bullets veering off to the left, a possible problem with their gun sights. "The first one I hit rolled over, trailing smoke, and went down," Vejtasa said. He didn't have time to watch it all the way as he went after another Zero, which also rolled over when hit, trailed smoke, and pulled away from the Dauntless. "I actually met this pilot after the war, and found out that he

Blonde on a Plane
A plane is on its way to Toronto when a blonde in Economy Class gets up and moves to the First Class Section and sits down.
The flight attendant watches her do this and asks to see her ticket. The flight attendant then tells the blonde that she paid for Economy Class and that she will have to sit back in the back.
The blonde replies, “I’m blonde, I’m beautiful, I’m going to Toronto and I’m staying right here!” The flight attendant goes into
The pilot says, “You say she is a blonde? Well, I’ll handle this. I’m married to a blonde and I speak blonde.”
The flight attendant and copilot are amazed and asked him what he said to make her move without any fuss.

I pushed my way through brambles. I got sand in my shoes and my eyes. I avoided standing on a snake. I climbed several rocky hills. I took a few 'leaks' behind some big trees. The mental stress of it all left me shattered. At the end of it all, I drank eight beers."

between 1200-1500 feet, and were a tremendous improvement in firepower over the Dauntless' .30-calibers. The addition of armor plating and self-sealing fuel tanks also were welcomed by pilots. Vejtasa was flying the Wildcat on October 26, 1942, a day that marked one of the greatest single American aerial combat feats ever, resulting in a second Navy Cross decoration.
VF-10 was assigned to fly Combat Air Patrol (CAP) during the Battle of Santa Cruz, protecting the U.S.S. Hornet, and again Swede stated that they "never got the CAP out far enough." They were out near Stewart Island at about 12,000 feet when they spotted a large group of Japanese torpedo and dive bombers already heading in to the attack, diving from 18,000 feet, aiming for the American carriers. The Japanese did not see them coming, or else they were determined to press the attack without concern for their survival. Swede quickly cut in behind two Aichi D3A2 "Val" dive bombers, firing all six .50-caliber machine guns, and flamed both of them before they even knew what hit them, one shot from the side, and the other from behind. The enemy formation then spread out, and Vejtasa decided to go after a group of Nakajima B5N2 "Kate" torpedo bombers that were still about twelve miles from the carriers. The enemy switched targets

to the Enterprise, as the Hornet was already dying. At this point, Vejtasa switched to using only four machine guns to save ammunition. Swede spotted eleven of the Kate torpedo planes,
and dove on them from 8000 feet. He and his wingman quickly downed one each, and then pulled up to regain altitude. Spotting another formation of three Kates, he pulled in

was confirmed in the ready room. There was finally time to ask questions--first of all about our own planes that went down, like 'Did you see them go down?', and 'Where did they go down?'. Then they got around to asking about who could confirm other pilot's victories."
Back on the U.S.S. Enterprise there was no time for celebrating, as the fleet was still not out of danger. Vejtasa would still have to fly another CAP that same day. Within the space of one hour, Swede was back out for another four hours in the air. At this point, the U.S.S. Hornet was on fire and under tow, and more torpedo bombers were spotted on the radar inbound to the fleet. VF-10 was told by the admiral to hold position instead of being released to intercept the enemy, being the last line of defense before anti-aircraft fire would cut in.
To make better time getting out of the area, the towline to the Hornet was cut, and the fleet sailed away. For Vejtasa, it was the end of a tough day--about nine hours in the air. After landing, he went to the ready room and filled out his combat report, then hit the sack to get some
"There were no celebrations of any kind," Swede recalled. "Most people didn't know what had happened. In fact, it wasn't until the next day that it
Swede recalled that pilots spent much of their time in the ready room, and they never seemed to have much time for sleep. They flew CAP at dawn and dusk--the most vulnerable times for Japanese attack. Each mission was about four or four and a half hours long, and in between missions they usually worked right alongside the maintenance crews on their own plane. "Those were the days that pilots were expected to know just about everything about their planes, including the engine," Vejtasa remembered. The day before the big air battle, VF-10 was involved in a disastrous mission that resulted in the loss of several planes. Scout planes had already spotted the Japanese, so the fleet knew they would be coming. The admiral decided to act on the contact report, even though it was already late afternoon. They were ordered to fly a maximum attack, despite the range being beyond the safe distance to be able to return back to the carriers. The CO briefed the air crews, and told them it would be an "Out and In" mission, straight out to the target, attack fast, and straight back in to the carriers. They quickly launched and flew the calculated range to the contact area. In the already-darkened skies they couldn't find anything, and knew they had no

time to search. Back the squadrons flew, maintaining radio silence. The planes did have lights on in order to avoid collision, but in the dark the pilots had no horizon to orient themselves.
One pilot in Swede's group suddenly broke formation, diving straight into the ocean. It was not too unusual for pilots to suffer vertigo under those conditions. When the planes reached the area that their carriers were expected to be--there was nothing. Swede remembered that the Enterprise was trailing oil from a previous hit, so he dropped down to look for a tell-tale slick. After circling for a brief period, he found it. The next problem was to decide which way the carrier had been heading.
"I just guessed it would be going in an easterly direction, and I was right," Swede said. They had found the fleet, but some planes began to sink into the water, out of fuel. The pilots were rescued, but many planes were lost. Swede followed the "dust-pan" lights into a landing, only to find that his wingman, Lt. Eddie Coalson, had landed right next to him despite furious waving off by the landing officer. "It was probably the only tandem Wildcat landing in carrier history," commented Vejtasa. "I later asked him [Coalson] what he was doing--and he told me 'If you think you were getting away from me tonight, you are crazy'."
Despite all of these experiences, Swede never though much about the constant danger of death or capture. He said that in combat, everything happened so fast that you never had time to worry. Not that he didn't have close calls while flying, as one incident will show. "Back off Guadalcanal, in my Wildcat, we were ordered to deliver an important message to Admiral Halsey on New Caledonia. The message was all taped up to be waterproof, and it was to be another maximum range mission," he recalled. Vejtasa and his wingman set

Agents of the California Alcoholic Beverage Control, along with the Escondido Police Department on Tuesday evening, March 5th, cited one clerk for selling alcohol to a minor. The citation was the result of a minor decoy operation in which a minor under the direct supervision of department agents attempted to purchase alcohol from 12 retail licensees in the city of Escondido. The clerk, a 31-year-old female resident of Escondido who works at the Mi Puebla Market at 1516 E. Valley Parkway, faces a minimum fine of $250 and/or 24 to 32 hours of community service for the first violation. In addition, ABC will take administrative action against the alcoholic beverage license of the business where the alcohol was sold. This may include a fine, suspension of its license or the permanent revocation of the license. ABC and police statewide

conduct compliance checks to reduce the availability of alcohol to minors. Statistics have shown that young people under the age of 21 have a higher rate of drunken driving fatalities than the general adult population.
Minor decoy operations have been conducted by local law enforcement throughout California since the 1980s. When the program first began, the violation rate of retail establishments selling alcohol to minors was as high as 40 percent to 50 percent. When these details are conducted on a regular basis, the rate dropped in some cities to 10 percent or lower. The ABC and the Escondido Police Department will continue to conduct minor decoy operations, as well as other compliance checks of establishments throughout the year. In 1994 the California Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the use of underage decoys is a valid tool of law enforcement to ensure that licensees are complying with the law.

You are SO right, Mr. Davis.
Sorrentino's is a place one does not want to miss. The food is delicious, it is a friendly place and even though it was our first time there, we were treated like family.
Yes, we did tell them "Mr. Davis sent us." You and Evelyn must have been popping buttons as most of the conversation was how grateful they are to you two for all that you have done for them. Thanks for letting us in on the secret of this great restaurant.
Your reply to one of the letters in the last issue ended with: ".... Nor do I understand what you are upset about. But, thanks for writing." It seemed like you laughed the person off and it seemed wrong, so I searched The Paper's archive to understand better, and I now share Mr. Beisel's frustration. I too would like to read a paper that delivers more than a Daily Chuckle at the expense of its own readers. It was already three weeks, and Mr. D'Amelio still did not correct/retract at least the misinformation about Marlon Brando. It is also unfortunate that Mr. Skarvada did not follow up. Adult Orthodontics-Six Month Smile System
Short Term Orthodontics is a powerful new approach for correcting dental tooth misalignment in adults. It offers a cosmetic solution for those of us “stuck” with unattractive smiles who don’t want to go through “Comprehensive Orthodontics. The Six Month Smiles System allows your dentist a more controlled and efficient method for moving your teeth into their proper position compared to aligners. When using aligners your teeth can fail to “track” properly into position and this can be difficult to correct, where it is much easier to correct with the Short Term Orthodontic approach. When using aligners the dentist’s lab fees are higher and your length of treatment time is much longer, as a patient. The Six Month Smiles System costs you less and you can be done in somewhere between a half to a third of the time compared to Invisalign or other aligner systems.
Six Month Smiles System is viewed as a more conservative alternative to either veneers, crowns or bridges. Rather than removing tooth structure and/or bonding porcelain, our patient’s natural teeth are safely moved to more appropriate positions to

In his reply, Dan wrote how he welcomes all letters, and he demonstrated his sincerity by pretending to ignore the very first letter he was supposedly replying to, mine. He deflected all issues by asking about the editor's own ancestry instead. give our patients a pleasing smile. This way the precious enamel of your teeth can often be protected. Of course, there are times where a “combined treatment” approach is used, where we move the teeth into their proper position while “adjusting” small areas of enamel which may be preventing final positioning of a tooth. Six Month Smiles does not focus on those patients seeking an “ideal’ posterior bite relationship. These patients need comprehensive orthodontics. off despite the forecast for bad weather. The flight was to be mostly over open seas, but there was at least one area of reefs that they could use as a checkpoint. When they had gone the calculated distance, there was only open seas--no reefs in sight.
"We were taught to drop down and read wind direction from the swells and waves on the seas, so I did," said Vejtasa. "The wind had been coming from our right, so I turned right 90 degrees when we were supposed to be as far as the island. We were already low on fuel, but I never thought about not making it. I finally spotted some breakers marking a reef, so I started circling trying to find a small island."
Swede placed much of the blame on the charts they had to use. "They were not good at all, we never had decent charts," he recalled. They finally spotted the small island of Ouvea, with a lagoon and a swampy area, and circled looking at their chances to make a decent

landing. Vejtasa spotted a small burned out area, and decided to try there while his wingman waited to see how he fared. "If I didn't do very well, he was to ditch in the lagoon," Swede said. However, the Wildcat managed to land, followed by the other plane, both practically out of gas. While Swede had been circling, he had spotted some natives. As they walked back to that vicinity, one native man came out of the brush and led them to a village.
"We were so dehydrated, and I made a sign with my hands about drinking, so he clapped his hands and a swarm of small boys came out of the brush. We hadn't even seen anybody else. He had them climb the palm trees and bring down some coconuts, which he proceeded to split open with one slice of a machete," Vejtasa related.
Eventually they were led to the hut of a schoolteacher that spoke both English and French. She was able to take them to a lighthouse that had a telegraph, and the keeper tried to send out a message.

In March, 1943, just before returning to the United States, Vejtasa was picked to try out the new Vought F4U Corsair fighter plane, testing it while on the Enterprise. The early dash-1 model did not impress the experienced pilot, despite the enviable record that Corsairs were later to earn.
The next day a seaplane landed in the lagoon, picked up the two lost airmen, and flew them the final seventy miles to their intended destination. After delivering the message, Vejtasa convinced the higherups that both fighters could be rescued. As of June 2012, the end of Escondido’s fiscal year, the city has shown a $4.1 million surplus; further, an additional $800,000 is expected during the current fiscal year.
This is welcome news after four consecutive years of large budget deficits which required tremendous outlays of capital, the laying off of many city workers, and other painful cuts.
Because of the surplus, the city has been able to invest $850,000 for hiring additional fire personnel, $500,000 for grants to help businesses spruce up their appearance and $100,000 to host the nation’s biggest Amgen bike race this May. Before he left the combat zone, Swede bagged a seaplane in his Wildcat. He was part of a four-fighter section out on CAP for the Enterprise when the fourmotor flying boat was spotted. One blast of his .50-caliber machine guns were enough to send it down in flames, and it exploded before it hit the water, bringing his victory total to eleven. Vejtasa didn't make it back into combat before the war ended, serving as a flight training officer in New Jersey, but VF-10 did transition into the Grumman F8F Bearcat after the war, while based on the carrier U.S.S. Philippine Sea. It was a plane that Vejtasa rated as "the greatest prop plane ever built." He added that "nothing in Europe could hold a candle to it." Vejtasa was then transferred to the new Edwards Air Force base, where he and "just about everybody else" checked out in the Lockheed P-80
Hall could reopen on Fridays after four years of being open only four days per week.
City Manager Clay Phillips says he plans to spend much of the additional revenue on paving streets and aggressive code enforcement to crack down on graffiti and illegal garage conversions. More welcome news. Sales tax revenue has been increasing roughly 20 percent each quarter. That’s also good news because it is a solid indicator that the economic slump is well on its way to a turn-around . . . at least in San Diego County.
Vehicle sales tax has been an inportant element in the surge. Last fall, sales tax from new cars was up 27.4 percent and sales tax from used cars was up 33.9 percent, compared with fall 2011. Auto dealer sales tax is particularly important to Escondido as the fate and fortunes of the city are closely tied to that sales volume.
Rojas said the city is projected to collect $32 million in sales tax this year, nearly as much Shooting Star, his first experience in jets. He was then assigned to the Navy's experimental D-558-2 program, flying chase after the Douglas Skyrocket. He also got to fly the Boeing B-29 Superfortress mother ship that dropped the Skyrocket, serving as co-pilot for George Jensen, a Douglas test pilot.
Swede then accumulated a lot of time in the North American FJ-4 Fury, the Navy counterpart of the F-86 Sabre, and also got to fly the experimental Douglas Skyshark--with a counterrotating turboprop. He felt it was an interesting plane with potential, but "the engine took huge amounts of oil, and the angle of attack had to be shallow." The Douglas Skyraider was eventually selected to fill the same role.
Vejtasa became the Air Officer on the U.S.S. Essex (CV-9) during the height of the Korean War, occasionally flying the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk, but his duties prevented him from getting much combat time. He came back to the U.S. to China Lake, flying the FJ-4 Fury
as before the 2007 recession.
However, the city government has helped guide and assist attractive new businesses to come into Escondido, all of which contribute to the city finance via sales tax; included are the beautiful new Lexus dealership, a CarMax used car lot and a three-story Target at Westfield North County mall. Add to this a new Walmart, on East Valley Parkway and the city finances begin to look even better.
Rojas said the $800,000 surplus would be placed in the city’s $24 million reserve account. Summing up? Nice job, city of Escondido. Ya gone and went and done good! Keep it up!

and McDonnell F-4 Phantom while testing the new Sidewinder missile, various computer gun sights, and smart bombs. Swede also got to fly the McDonnell F2H Banshee and the ChanceVought F7U Cutlass before becoming the CO of the U.S.S. Constellation (CV-64) early in Vietnam, 1962-1963. Vejtasa went on to command Miramar Naval Air Station before retiring in 1970. After such a distinguished career, he was elected to the new Carrier Aviation Hall of Fame in 1987, located at the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum in Charleston, South Carolina. The History Channel also featured him on an episode of their "Dogfights" series. This great American hero lived out the rest of his life quietly in the outskirts of Escondido, and just passed away a few weeks ago.

“You don’t see a lot of world news in The Paper,” said Davis. “We leave that to the big boys. The daily papers, the tv and cable networks, they can cover the world news. We focus on local community news . . . the information our readers want to hear about and understand.”
The Paper has grown from an initial distribution of around 4,000, principally to the San Marcos and Lake San Marcos areas, to as high as 28,000 distribution, with an average of over 20,000 weekly. It now serves the communities of Escondido, Rancho Bernardo, San Marcos, Lake San Marcos, San Elijo Hills, Vista, Carlsbad, and Oceanside.
“People sometimes notice I’m getting on in years,” said Davis. “They will ask me, ‘why don’t you retire?’ My answer? ‘Why should I? I love what I do. If you love what you do, it’s not work. Besides, who’d raise hell if I retired? Local News tip? Email to: thepaper@cox.net
hero in our midst just died last month. I was calling him to let him know I was going to send the article to you, and one of his family answered and told me. I used to call him a couple of times every year, and go and visit about once a year. He lived in Escondido. I was able to get the Padres to honor him on Military Day a few years ago, and he got to toss out the first pitch. He prefered to live out a quiet life, but even the History Channel found him and did an episode about him for their "Dogfights" show.
He is the only one to do this feat and NOT get the Medal of Honor, and we even tried to fix that but he would not go along with it.
Editor’s Note: Sadly, it is more and more common for us to tell the heroic tales of these brave souls who defended our nation in the most trying times, most often after they have passed on. We wish they had gotten the recognition while still alive. In their late 80’s and 90s, we owe so much to these often forgotten heroes!

Congrats to one of my favorite people, the beautiful Katie Ragazzi. She heads up The Escondido Education Foundation and they are right in the midst of a 50/50 Together Campaign, proceeds of which go to the Innovation Awards, which are available to all 23 EUSD schools. 22 schools have received a grant since they started the program. Escondido • Mayor Sam Abed Public Safety is a Top Priority
Public Safety has always been a top priority of mine. So I am particularly proud to say that since 2004 Escondido has seen a 29% decrease in crime.
Even with that good news, my colleagues on the City Council and I remain committed to doing all we can to ensure a safe community. I am very pleased to announce that we are now hiring more police officers to continue to aggressively fight crime. In addition, we recently strengthened the Police executive management team by promoting two lieutenants, Craig Carter and Mike Loarie, to Police
Captain. The community task force established last Fall to address issues in the downtown area has been very successful. You may be assured Traffic Safety Check Points and our partnership with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are being strengthened too. Additional resources also are being devoted to our Fire Department. The first group of twelve non-safety paramedics started work on February 25. We intend to hire a second group of twelve later this Spring. On April 19th, our seventh Fire Engine will go into service at Fire Station 6 on Del Dios Road.
Your city government is committed to keeping Escondido a safe city for all to enjoy.

Nome and Paul Van Middlesworth thecomputerfactoryltd.com The Computer Factory Does Your ISP Support International Criminals?
A couple of weeks ago one of our regular customers came in with a problem. To protect his identity lets just call him Joe Baggadonuts. Joe was having trouble with Internet access so he called customer service at AT&T, his ISP (Internet Service Provider). His call was routed to the Philippines where some low bid independent contractor handles AT&T’s customer service calls. Some say AT&T uses Philippine customer service technicians because they’re smarter than American technicians. We would question that theory, after all, we’re not all like Best Buy’s “Geek Squad” technicians. It might also be the fact that Philippine customer service techs earn about $2.00/hr, a bit less than the hourly cost of Obamacare for
More Taxes for Californians
Spend less and you’ll be taxed more. This is the formula that the Board of Equalization (BOE) enforced with a recent vote to increase the state’s gas tax. In 2010, budget-deal legislation gave the BOE discretion to increase the excise tax on gasoline if tax revenues declined.
Last week, the BOE voted to raise the excise tax 3.5 cents. California’s gas tax now totals 39.5 cents per gallon – which combined with the sales tax, federal gas tax, and local taxes, gives California the highest tax in the country! This tax increase is another example of California’s unwillingness to provide
American techs.
Joe’s customer service tech asked the usual questions, and then had Joe reboot his modem. When this didn’t work he left the phone to run some service line tests. A few clicks, whirrs and buzzes later and the tech was back with the news that AT&Ts Internet service was in perfect working order and that the problem was obviously in Joe’s computer. The technician then asked if he could troubleshoot Joe’s PC. Joe reluctantly agreed and a few click and whirrs later AT&Ts tech was roaming about inside Joes PC. He soon had his “aha moment” and told Joe he could see the problem but was not permitted to “fix” computers. He offered to transfer Joe to a “Microsoft” technician who would certainly be able to fix the problem.
Joe’s is one of many similar stories we’ve heard in the past several months. Apparently the contractors working for AT&T and other ISPs are not, by contract, permitted to collect pay for services from ISP clients. They get around that by offering to transfer ISP customers to fraudulent “Microsoft” service providers who offer to fix problems for a fee. Since the $79 fee is about a weeks wages for a customer service tech there is little doubt that the AT&T customer service rep is collaborating in a scam to defraud AT&T customers and share in the proceeds. This has been going on for months. How can the ISPs not know what’s going on? Though the ISP does not share in the scamming profits, they
are at the very least abetting activity that certainly would be regarded as criminal here in America.
There has been a trend in American industry to offshore customer support activities. Typically these are not international divisions of the mother corporation but local entities selected through a bidding process. Foreign cultures often have different views concerning business ethics. American consumers who are accustomed to our Judeo/Christian ethic, justice system and relatively crime free domestic business environment are vulnerable to international scammers. American companies using foreign surrogates to service American consumers need to do a better job of protecting their clients.
Joe agreed and soon the “Microsoft” technician was prowling the innards of Joe’s PC. The “Microsoft” technician announced that he had identified the problem and could fix it for only $79.95. By now Joe was beginning to smell a rat. “No thanks,” said Joe and hung up.
He then called Microsoft in Redmond, Washington, and demanded to speak to a supervisor. The supervisor listened patiently to his story and then offered to help, but first Joe must open a $99.95 service order. Joe hung up and brought it to us. Thirty bucks later he was cured.

"You would have to talk to Dad about that. I know he charges $500 for the bull and $50 for the pig, but I don't know how much he charges for Howard." Touring the RaceTrack
A group of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders, accompanied by two female teachers, went on a field trip to the local racetrack, (Churchill Downs ) to learn about thoroughbred horses and the supporting industry (Bourbon), but mostly to see the horses. When it was time to take the children to the bathroom, it was decided that the girls would go with one teacher and the boys would go with the other.
The teacher assigned to the boys was waiting outside the men's room when one of the boys came out and told her that none of them could reach the urinal. Having no choice, she went inside, helped the boys with their pants, and began hoisting the little boys up one by one, holding on to their "Wee-Wees" to direct the flow away from their clothes.
As she lifted one, she couldn't help but notice that he was unusually well endowed. Trying not to show that she was staring the teacher said, "You must be in the 5th grade."
"No, ma'am,' he replied. "I'm riding Silver Arrow in the sev-

There was a knock on the door this past Saturday morning. I opened it to find a young, well-dressed man standing there who said: "Hello sir, I'm a Jehovah's Witness." So I said "Come in and sit down." I offered him a fresh cup of coffee and asked, "What do you want to talk about?" He said, "Beats the heck out of me! Nobody ever let me in before."
