It started out as just one of those sad things that happen in life. A nice elderly couple, poor as church mice, living on a small farm in East Orange, Vermont.
From all appearances, they were only barely able to survive. Alex Miller would even scrounge rusty nails from burned out buildings for use in repairing his roof. He drove a ratty old VW Beetle and when it died he found another even more ratty VW, and then another, both little more than VW carcasses rusting away but still, inexplicaThe Paper - 760.747.7119

bly, operational. The VW’s, both operational and dysfunctional, displayed their rusty selves upon the yard of this small farm.
In the year of 1993 Alex took leave of this earthly planet and went on his Great Reward. In 1996, just three years later, his beloved Imogene decided she, too, would check out and meet up with Alex somewhere in that Great Heavenly Place.
Well, East Orange is a cozy, family type community. The local church took up a collection so both Alex and Imogene could be buried in
the churchyards. The state, however, being a state, and comprised of flint-hearted government officials, laid claim to the farm and planned on selling the farm for taxes. That would have been the end of a sad story, except . . .
While preparing the estate for auction, the sheriff discovered a cache of bearer bonds taped to the back of a mirror. That triggered a comprehensive search of the house and outbuildings. The estate auction would eventually be handled by Christies, and it would bring out collectors from all over the world.
It seems simple little povertystrick Alex Miller was not all he appeared to be. He was, in fact, a Rutgers grad, son of a wealthy financier. He originally lived in Montclair, NJ, where he founded Miller's Flying Service in 1930. He operated a gyrocopter, one of those newfangled flying machines (similar to a helicopter, but different). As they grew out of their operational quarters and needed more room they moved from Montclair to East Orange, Vermont. Alex was a very private man. And he was paranoid about tax collectors. Didn’t like

‘em. Not one bit. So he decided to adopt a low profile life. He took his somewhat unusual collections with him. He had already converted his cash to gold and silver bars and coins, which he then buried in various locations around his farm. He carefully disassembled his gyrocopter, and stored it in an old oneroom schoolhouse on his property.
You see, Alex Miller had an obsession with cars. Not just any cars, but Stutz cars. Blackhawks, Bearcats, Superbearcats, DV16's and 32's. He had been buying them since the 1920's. When Stutz went out of business, he bought a huge pile of spare parts, which was also carefully stored away in his sheds.
Occasionally, he would wander away from the Stutz cars and wind up buying items
it from any prying eyes. Over the years, the farm appeared to grow more and more forlorn, even as the collection was growing.
Occasionally he would sell some parts to raise cash. Rather than dipping into his cache, he would labor for hours making copies of the original parts by hand.
Collectors knew him as a sharp trader, who had good merchandise but was prone to cheating. His neighbors had no clue at all, they thought Alex and Imogene were paupers, and often helped out with charity. Ol’ Alex, he was right handy with tools and wound up building a couple of dozen sheds and barns out of scrap lumber and recycled nails. In the sheds he put his collection.

An 80-year old Scotsman went to the doctor for a check-up.
The doctor was amazed at the great shape the old fellow was in and asked, “How do you stay in such great physical condition?”
“I am Scots and I’m a golfer,” said the old fellow, “and that’s why I’m in such good shape. I am up well before daylight and out golfing up and down the fairways. I have a wee nip of whiskey on each hole, and that’s it.” “Well,” said the doctor, “I’m

He'd simply move them into his storage sheds in the middle of the night, each car wrapped in burlap to protect
sure that helps, but there has to be more to it. How old was your dad when he died?” “Who said my dad died?”
The doctor was amazed.
“You mean you are 80 years old and your dad’s still alive. How old is he?”
“He’s a 100 years old,” said the old Scottish golfer. “In fact he golfed wi’ me this mornin’… And then we went to the topless beach for a walk, and that’s why he’s still alive. He’s a Scot and a golfer, too.”
“Well,” the doctor said, “that’s great, but I am sure there’s more to it than that. How about your dad’s dad? How old was he when he died?”
“Who said my grandad is dead?”
Stunned, the doctor asked, “You mean you are 80 years old and your grandfather is still living! Incredible, how old is he?!”
“He turned 118 last month,” said the old Scot.
The auction, technically known as The AK Miller Auction, was held on September 7 and 8, 1996. It amounted to a three day circus, billed as the "Opening of King Stutz Tomb." It attracted celebrity collectors, as well as thousands of curiosity seekers. The proceeds were in the
The doctor was getting frustrated at this point: “So, I guess he went golfing with you this morning too?”
“No. Grandad couldn’t go this mornin’ because he’s getting married today.” At this point the doctor was close to losing it – “Getting married?! Why would a 118year old bloke want to get married?” “Who said he wanted to?”
Editor’s Note: The attorney who sent me this joke told me: “It’s not too far fetched. I had a client who was 89. She was distraught because her father divorced her mother after a sixty year marriage. I asked how old were your parents! Her mother was 102. Her father was 104, My client was really upset because her father remarried a 70 year old floozy who could have been my client's stepmother.”

Here’s to the pols: I’ve been known to criticize political types before . . . but I also have to acknowledge that they put in a lot of time and hard work in their elected positions. They don’t always make the right decisions (to my way of thinking) but . . . they try.

A Motorist’s Worst Nightmare: Backing into a Cop
A 48-year-old woman, newly arrived in Oceanside from North Carolina, was trying to get her bearings while driving east on Olive, in Vista. She suddenly made an abrupt left, without signaling, into the driveway of a home.
Because of the quick move, the officer, who was behind the woman, flipped on his lights to pull her over.
But the woman didn’t see him — and subsequently backed out of the driveway right into the officer. We reckon she was right powerful embar-

The regrets were few, however, said Cowan. There was a sense of accomplishment and time well spent on behalf of his community . . . but that’s in the past. He has no further political ambition.

reads, in part: “The fear, based on misinformation, in those who oppose nuclear power was as apparent here as it is everywhere. This article only served to spread more misinformation.
The picture of a bomb explosion was so obvious. A picture of the Fukushima plants would have been honest. That’s the worst that can happen to nonChernobyl type reactors. The Chernobyl type, have been modified to prevent that terrible accident happening ever again.
No one anywhere in Japan got “radiation poisoning” whatever the writer meant by that. Deaths at the plants were industrial accidents, not due to radiation. As always in these articles, no numbers and no comparison to natural and medical radiation exposures were given. streetlights in their Oceanside neighborhood.
No dice, said Vista Superior Court Judge Jacqueline Stern. She ruled the city was under no obligation to replace the lights that city workers had removed due to severe rust damage. The developer was the one who originally installed the 132 streetlights as well as the 500 that remain. The city then refused to replace the decorative lights, which were installed years ago by the developer who built the neighborhood.
City Attorney John Mullen said it would cost about $3,500 per pole to replace the lights and the Home Owners Association could create a Special Assessmentd District to do this, if they wished. POLITICAL OPINION RESEARCH - $25

practic and am pleased we have so many talented doctors of chiropractic in North San Diego County. ••••• Good ol’ Dr. Greg Hurt, the always jovial, always smiling dentist, has something of an international cast at his dental practice, San Marcos Dental Centre.
Besides the beautiful Sonia, whom we have spoken of before, he also has a fascinating young lady by name of Charlene Nguyen.

The speculation that reactor plant owners MIGHT form LLC’s and go bankrupt to avoid excess decommissioning expense is silly. Don’t you think Congress thought of that? The writer should have contacted the NRC for information, and reference to the applicable regulations and law. There are many other factual errors in this article. I’ll be happy to discuss these, and refer you to a local expert, Ted Quinn, of Danna Point. I’ll forward his contact info when I get home. Howard Shaffer PE Coordinator, Vermont Grassroots Project American Nuclear Society Enfield, NH
The author of the story, Claudia Aragon responds:
Charlene’s family escaped from South Vietnam and managed to survive, but not without some difficulty. Her family did farming, a grandfather raised, sold and slaughtered pigs.
Eventually, the family emigrated to America and to the San Diego County area. While the adult family members were not highly educated and had to work, work, work, just to feed the family, they stressed education to the kids ... and Charlene Nguyen was one of those kids that listened . . . and responded. After years of hard work, scrimping and saving, and applying for grants, she was accepted at CSUSM (Cal State, San Marcos) and will soon be graduating with a Major in Biology and a Minor in Chemistry. She plans on continuing her education by going to dental school and becoming a dentist. Her hope is to work in an office that also does annual mission work, to give back to those most in need. ‘Man About Town’ Cont. on Page 13
First off, let me state for the record, I am neither pro, nor anti-nuclear. I simply accept nuclear energy as a fact of life, the same as I do any other form of energy that brings illumination to the world around me.
As I noted in my article, it wasn’t until San Onofre went down, that I began to question and do research to find answers to my questions and satisfy my own curiosity; delving into the internet to find information regarding nuclear power plants both here and abroad. I further state in my article, how our NRC is not only proactive to ensure facility safety, but whenever there has been a malfunction or accident within the United States, the NRC takes measures to ensure all plants reassess their facilities and safety procedures to prevent future occurrences.
Regarding the accompanying photos; all of the photo selections and decisions are done by the publisher and copy editor. (Editor’s Note: Ms. Aragon is correct. She did not select the photos).
My article also acknowledged the portion regarding the LLC’s is from a study done by the New York Times, which examined the decommissioning of nuclear power plants.
Our first baby Mamma is all ready for her very own forever home. Matilda is just a young Terrier herself at 1 plus year. She is playful, loving and very friendly with people and pets. Matilda is doing very well with her crate/potty training. She is even less than 10 pounds. Invite this wonderful and mellow pup into your home and heart.
Like all our pups Matilda is spayed and microchipped. Her 5 way vaccines and rabies are all up to date. She comes with a full 4 piece safety equipment set, food for her transition and any favorite toys or bedding. In response to your ‘radiation poisoning’ statement, my article states and I quote: “Several heroic people died or suffered radiation poisoning while attempting to shut down the Fukushima Daiichi reactors in order to save millions of their fellow Japanese countrymen.” I never say anything regarding regular citizens getting, or dying from radiation poisoning.
There is a plethora of information out there on nuclear energy, and far too much to put into one article. The piece was offering information and facts, nothing more or less. My job as a writer is to get people to think and talk, and if they have…I did my job. /s/Claudia Aragon Sir

Friar is a 2-year-old neutered male Chihuahua mix, ID 69721. If you have resolved to lead a healthier lifestyle and get more exercise, Friar may be just what you need: an enthusiastic partner – one who is never too busy or not in the mood for a walk. If he had a motto, it would be "Come on! Let's go!" Surprisingly, he is not one of the extreme "high-energy dogs" – he enjoys quiet times and is very affectionate – but this dog loves to get out and go for a walk. He scampers along, and looks back every minute or two to make sure you are having as good a time as he is. His size makes him easy to handle on a leash. Friar is available for adoption from the Escondido Humane Society, 3450 E. Valley Parkway, and is currently living in a private foster home. His $85 adoption fee includes neuter, microchip, up-to-date vaccinations and vet exam. For more information, or to set up an appointment to meet Friar, call Adult Dog Foster Care Coordinator Julie Herman at (760) 594-7605.

Escondido • Mayor Sam Abed Council Action Plan for 2013- 2014
Following each election, the Escondido City Council holds a workshop to develop its Action Plan for the next two years. The Action Plan represents the City Council’s collective vision for Escondido’s future and the strategies that will be used to achieve that vision.
On February 27, the City Council held a nearly five-hour workshop to identify and discuss key policy goals. During that meeting, each council member was able to elaborate on their ideas for city priorities. At the conclusion of the workshop, the City Council approved the following categories (in alphabetical order) for the 2013-2014 Council Action Plan:
Economic Development Fiscal Management Neighborhood Improvement Public Safety
Over the next few months, City staff members will identify the current reality in each of those areas and develop strategies to achieve the City Council’s goals, as well as evaluation measures. A draft of each of the four categories will be scheduled separately for City Council review. Then a final document will be prepared by early summer for final Council approval.
I have been very pleased by the progress we have achieved through our 2011-2012 Action Plan and look forward to continued success with our new plan. By the way, if you are interested in knowing how successful the 2011-2012 Council Action Plan was, the Council will hear a final report on it at the March 20, 2013 City Council meeting at 4:30 p.m.

A Critique
The Feb 28th issue's "letters to the editor" caught my attention. I'm referring to Thomas' letter to the editor regarding articles written by Dan. These articles were published in the paper, along with Dan's replies; nothing wrong with that, (I just have to figure out what Dan was replying to, as it had nothing to do with the letter). With the editor's help, Dan had the opportunity to act like a child in his response. Dan, in the end, offered a fake challenge: "Lyle, if you don't mind telling me, what was your ancestry?" Is this a tradition between you two?

Through YEP, Oceanside businesses will be able to post internship opportunities, review student resumes, interview and even receive an internship liaison to help facilitate the entire process. Worker’s Compensation Insurance coverage is an option too. Not sure why you think Mr. D’Amelio “acted like a child in his response.” I don’t agree with you at all.
As to his inquiry as to my ancestry, it was a perfectly innocent question to which I replied. I did not “brag about the Vikings,” I merely stated my ancestry.
Mr. D’Amelio and I have never met. We are not likely to to be “on the hunt,” a reference I don’t understand. Nor do I understand what you are upset about. But, thanks for writing.

Playing Monopoly!
We grew up in small-town Midwest, raised by parents who survived the great depression and WW II. In those days “old timers” were always telling us how tough it was to get by when they were growing up and how easy life had become for we pampered post war youngsters. Mankind was progressing, things were getting better, and the future was bright. Now that we are the “old timers” it would be great if we could carry on that time-honored tradition by inspiring our grandchildren with tales of hardship and woe. By telling them how lucky they are to live in an enlightened age where the living is easy and the future is bright. Unfortunately it just doesn’t seem to be true for many of us who lived grew up in the post war
A Workforce that Works for the Economy
California has a skilled workforce deficit, and it’s only growing. Projections show an increasing gap between the education level of Californians and the education level demanded by the state’s economy.
California needs skilled workers for the economy to grow and to better the lives of our citizens. The Legislature, private companies, and labor organizations, must address our workforce’s demand for an increase in educated and trained labor.
This week the legislature is exploring issues of education reform to address California’s workforce deficit. The goal is to bring together a coalition of legislators, educators, business
“Golden Age.”
Without going into detail lets just say that we had a lot more freedom, a lot less government and life was far less complicated. Today it takes a lot more of our income to pay for those who regulate our lives. Since the younger generations never enjoyed the freedom we’ve lost they don’t miss it and, in a way, that’s a blessing.
Governments are monopolies and, like business monopolies, soon learn to focus on their own interests rather than their intended purpose or user needs. Microsoft has a virtual monopoly in PC operating systems with 90% of the market. Because users have no alternative, Microsoft, like Government, is free to pursue its own objectives regardless of how that impacts its users.
Microsoft needs to expand its share in the growing smart phone and tablet markets. Google is surging Apple is fading and Microsoft is just getting started. Win 8 is basically a tablet and smart phone operating system. If Microsoft can leverage its dominance in PC operating systems by forcing PC users to accept Win 8 as a PC operating system, its smart phone and tablet business will benefit from the “halo effect.” Microsoft knows that business services customers will not

embrace Win 8 so they continue to provide Win 7 to enterprise users. Small businesses and home users however, buy their PCs from retail outlets. By eliminating Win 7 availability in retail outlets, Microsoft hopes to force PC users to buy Win 8 PCs. That the majority of these users would rather stay with Windows 7 and that a lot of software and applications don’t work in Win 8 are irrelevant to Microsoft. Microsoft knows what’s good for Microsoft and what’s good for Microsoft must be good for you. Like it or not, they’re going to make you accept it.

I didn't like my beard at first. Then it grew on me.
How do you make holy water? Boil the hell out of it!
Did you hear about the cross eyed teacher who lost her job because she couldn't control her pupils?
When you get a bladder infection, urine trouble.
What does a clock do when it's hungry? It goes back four seconds. Before Sequestration
A guy stopped at a local gas station, and after filling his tank, he paid the bill and bought a Coke. He stood by his car to drink his Coke and watched a couple of men
- Page 13
working along the roadside. One man would dig a hole two or three feet deep and then move on. The other man came along behind him and filled in the hole. While one was digging a new hole, the other was 25 feet behind filling in the hole.
The men worked right past the guy with the Coke and went on down the road. "I can't stand this," said the man tossing the can into a trash container and headed down the road toward the men. "Hold it, hold it," he said to the men. "Can you tell me what's going on here with all this digging and refilling?" "Well, we work for the government and we're just doing our job," one of the men said.
"But one of you is digging a hole and the other fills it up. You're not accomplishing anything. Aren't you wasting the taxpayers' money?"
"You don't understand, mister," one of the men said, leaning on his shovel and wiping his brow. "Normally there's three of us: me, Elmer and Leroy. I dig the hole, Elmer sticks in the tree, and Leroy here puts the dirt back.
Elmer's job's been cut ... so now it's just me an' Leroy.” OLE'S MINNESOTA FIRE Insurance
Ole and Lena moved back home to Minnesota from Arizona.
To insure Ole's wooden leg in Arizona, it would cost $2,000.00 a year!
When they arrived in Minnesota, they went to an Insurance agency to see how much it would cost to insure the wooden leg. The agent looked it up on the computer and said to the couple, "$39.00."
Then Ole was shocked and asked why it was so cheap here in Minnesota to insure, because it cost him $2,000.00 in Arizona.
The agent turned his computer screen to Ole and said, "Well, here it is on the screen. It says: Any wooden structure, with a sprinkler system over it, is $39.00."
I always have found the Minnesota logic far superior to
that of most other states.

And he did. And it was good.
Evelyn left at about 4:30am Saturday morning as she had booked a breakfast attendance for 7am in the heretofore mentioned rural area of Burbank. No sooner had she left than lyle began to make plans.
He allowed as how he would pour mug after mug of grand Scotch whiskey. There was a slight problem, however, in that neither lyle nor doug drink. Unfazed, the decision was made to chase wild, wild women.
lyle, it is said, prefers women who are 'rough and raw,' preferably with only one or two teeth (they are cheaper dates, he says; they don't eat nearly as much). Both he and doug prefer their women with a whole lot of tattoos all over the body ... up and down

So, sadder, but ever wiser, doug and lyle headed out for breakfast at a local restaurant.
All the waitresses were attractive, had all their teeth, did not cuss, and were good at their jobs. Totally out of keeping with the wild, wild women doug and lyle had in mind. Maybe next time.
