What you are about to read may seem too shocking for your belief-system. In fact, for some of you, portions of this article may seem so incredible that it will be dismissed as only rumor and nothing more. However, I assure you, it is indisputable fact. But, that part of this article will come much later.
A few weeks ago I decided, once again, to indulge my fantasies by visiting one of the most popular chat rooms on planet Earth. It was a Harry Potter chat room. Surprisingly, it is often composed of a variety of people from a wide spectrum of professions: medical doctors, university professors, members of the clergy, high school students, lawyers, elementary school kids, farmers, well let’s just say a most interesting composition of human beings, of all races, and ethnicities, and cultural backgrounds. Impressive, in that despite their individual differences, these citizenry from different countries of the world are suddenly on common ground; all drawn together by a common cause: to view and share their excitement and passionate perspectives on the fantastic tales of Harry Potter.
The world had never before seen the likes of Harry Potter. Yes, there have been legions of fantastic tales of enchantment and magic long before British author, J. K. Rowling, came onto the literary scene. L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” is one of the most beloved tales of fantasy, magic, and witches riding on broomsticks. And so it remains. A true classic. As are the collective works of C. S. Lewis. There are too many examples to cite, but J. R. R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and his Lord of the Rings trilogy certainly deserves a nod of acknowledgement, for they stand alone in their supremacy, so much so that their only point of reference are themselves. His fantasy books are the rod of excellence by which all others are measured. But, Harry Potter did not ascend to centre stage, he grabbed it. He virtually lived on the front pages of the world’s most powerful cosmopolitan newspapers! The books’ popularity are unparalleled. They sold more than 400 milThe Paper - 760.747.7119

lion copies, became the bestselling book ‘series’ in world history. To wit, Rowling’s third Harry Potter book (“Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”) sold three million copies in its first 48 hours, demolishing all sales records! Her sixth book, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” sold nine million copies in its first 24 hours of release! The
world of literature had never before seen such a reaction!
Such massive, international popularity bestowed upon its author, J. K. Rowling, the unique title of being the very first “billionaire author.” In 2004, Forbes magazine named Rowling as the first author to become a U.S. dollar billionaire! (Rowling disputed the claim of
billionaire. Her vast fortune – however it is calculated -- was (and is) greatly diminished by Ms. Rowling’s high U.K. tax rate, as well as her constant, generous charitable donations (over $160 million U.S. dollars, and counting!). Billionaire or not, the fallout from this unprecedented windfall, greatly benefits the cause

of many charities, worldwide. For example, Rowling greatly endorses research labs in hopes of erasing multiple sclerosis and other scourges that are a curse to humanity. Her Harry Potter fame has empowered her to reinforce the war chests for countless heart-tugging organizations, such as “Children with Aids,” and “Make A Child Smile Appeal.” In October of 2010, J. K. Rowling was named “The Most Influential Woman in Britain,” by the foremost magazine editors. But this is not the unbelievable part of this article. That is still to come. So, please, read on. THE REAL WORLD OF HARRY POTTER
First off, I have a confession of sorts to make. It may seem an unforgivable one to Harry Potter fans everywhere, but, I never became a great fan of the Harry Potter movies. Rather, I succumbed whole-heartedly to the books! For me, the books were the real magic. The written words galvanized me; held me fast; then left me thunderstruck in the wake of their literary power. It was akin to reading Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” then viewing the movie
Give Us This Day Our Daily Chuckle This week, a compendium of wit, wisdom and neat stuff you can tell at parties. Enjoy! A Parable
On the sixth day, God turned to Archangel Gabriel and said, "Today I am going to create an area of land called The Midwest. It will be a land of outstanding natural beauty. It shall have tall hills and rolling plains full of game and eagles, beautiful sparkling lakes bountiful with bass and streams full of trout, forests full of deer and turkeys, valleys with fertile soil with an abundance nutrients to grow things, and rivers teaming with fish." God continued, "I shall make the land rich in resources so as to make the inhabitants prosper, I shall call these inhabitants Midwesterners, and they shall be known as the most friendly people on the earth."
adaptation, which was, in comparison, an obscene intrusion that trampled on the master’s organic prose.
Back to the Harry Potter chat room. Conversations ebbed and flowed and then it happened. A moment I will never forget. A nice lady from Curtis, Nebraska (whom I had come to know), weighed in with simple typed lines which tugged at my heartstrings. A wife and mother of two young daughters, she voiced an inner yearning, a calling-out from her small rural town, a wistful wish, which sadly had no discernible hope attached. She typed, “I only wish there really was a Hogwarts Castle. Where real magic and adventures can be experienced. Secret passwords that magically open up passageways through which one may disappear! A real magic castle, full of dreams, just like Hogwarts Castle, where Harry Potter went to school.” I wasted no time in replying to Lorna (not her real name). “Lorna, there really is such a place as Hogwarts! For over half a century it has existed, here in California, hidden away, among the lush flora, in the Hollywood hills. It is a real castle! With real hidden chambers. And real secret panels which are commanded to open only after the magic spell is uttered and through which you can disappear, just as in Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Castle!
"But Lord," asked Gabriel, "don't you think you are being too generous to these Midwesterners??"
"Not really," replied God.. "Just wait and see the winters I am going to give them!" HISTORY LESSON
For those that don't know about history, here is a condensed version: Humans originally existed as members of small bands of nomadic hunters/gatherers. They lived on deer in the mountains during the summer and would go to the coast and live on fish and lobster in the winter.
The two most important events in all of history were the invention of beer and the invention of the wheel. The wheel was invented to get man to the beer. These were the foundations of modern civilization and together were the catalyst for the splitting of humanity into two distinct subgroups: 1. Liberals 2. Conservatives.
Once beer was discovered, it required grain and that was the beginning of agriculture. Neither the glass bottle nor aluminum can were invented yet, so while our early humans were sitting around waiting for
Lorna, it is a place of utter enchantment and wonder where priceless treasures are stored, and where you may feast in beautiful dining rooms, with magic and wizardry all about you! Lorna, there are even underground catacombs, like undiscovered cities, hidden beneath your feet, waiting for you to explore them, if only you can locate the portals through which to pass! All this, Lorna, along with a galaxy of elegant, ornate showrooms where the greatest practitioners of the ancient art of magic showcase their powers all for your enjoyment!” It would have been the height of cruelty to Lorna, if I were playing a joke on her. Such a hoax would have been heartless, to say the least. Yet, what I had just described was, well, just too fantastic to comprehend! I must admit, I would have doubted my own words, if I were in her place, in the tiny rural area of Curtis, Nebraska. Yet, she believed me. Needless to say, it was a momentous day in the life of Lorna. Likewise, my words caused a tumultuous wave of excitement to all the Harry Potter fans, from all points of the compass, who read my reply to Lorna! So, where is this modern-day Hogwarts castle? And why have so many people not heard of this magical place? For
them to be invented, they just stayed close to the brewery. That's how villages were formed.
Some men spent their days tracking and killing animals to BBQ at night while they were drinking beer. This was the beginning of what is known as the Conservative movement ... Other men who were weaker and less skilled at hunting learned to live off the conservatives by showing up for the nightly BBQs and doing the sewing, fetching, and hair dressing. This was the beginning of the Liberal movement.
Some of these liberal men eventually evolved into women. They became known as girlie-men. Some noteworthy liberal achievements include the domestication of cats, the invention of group therapy, group hugs, and the concept of Democratic voting to decide how to divide the meat and beer that conservatives provided. Over the years conservatives came to be symbolized by the largest, most powerful land animal on earth, the elephant. Liberals are symbolized by the jackass for obvious reasons. Modern liberals like imported beer (with lime added), but most prefer white wine or imported bottled water. They
almost 52 years, it still remains hugely unknown! I conducted my own, unscientific poll, by asking over one thousand people, “Have you ever heard of The Magic Castle in Hollywood?” I was shocked, not surprised, BUT SHOCKED, that not many of the average citizenry knew of its existence! Of course, some individuals knew of The Magic Castle. Some had even visited it. But, they did not represent the norm. On the whole, this magical parcel of real estate is, well, still a secret! HOLLYWOOD’S MAGIC CASTLE
On January 2, 1963, something very mysterious appeared. The likes of which the world had never before seen, or experienced. Nestled at the foot of the famed Hollywood Hills, arose a mysterious Victorian castle. Its founders were two wizards, brothers Milt and Bill Larsen, Jr., who, themselves, belonged to one of the world’s most influential and secret societies. A society whose antecedents extend back in time several millennia, predating even the honorable Freemasons. A society so ancient and resilient, that it not only survived thousands of years, but its related fraternities encircle the world, to this very day.
And so, these two sorcerers,

eat raw fish but like their beef well done. Sushi, tofu, and French food are standard liberal fare. Another interesting evolutionary side note: most of their women have higher testosterone levels than their men. Most social workers, personal injury attorneys, journalists, dreamers in Hollywood and group therapists are liberals. Liberals invented the designated hitter rule because it wasn't fair to make the pitcher also bat. Conservatives drink domestic beer, mostly Coors or Miller. They eat red meat and still provide for their women. Conservatives are big game hunters, rodeo cowboys, lumberjacks, construction workers, firemen, medical doctors, police officers, engineers, corporate executives, athletes, members of the military, airline pilots and generally anyone who works productively. Conservatives who own companies hire other conservatives who want to work for a living. Liberals produce little. They prefer to govern the producers ... and decide what to do with the production. Liberals believe Europeans are more enlightened than Americans. That is why most of the liberals remained in Europe when

Milt and younger brother, Bill, somehow succeeded in building an over-powering edifice that, in reality, today, rivals the fictionalized world of Harry Potter! It is a realm of reality, yes, but a realm where the natural laws of physics are, ostensibly, bent and even suspended! A place where the line between the believable and the unbelievable is blurred. It is a magical castle from which springs forth charms and hocus pocus that are so fantastic and palpable as to curl Merlin’s beard!
But, who are these people, the founding fathers of this magical realm? And for what purpose does this piece of real estate serve and/or represent? Believe it or not, this magic castle structure, is preeminent, in all the world. It is the official world headquarters for the Academy of Magical Arts (AMA), and it is the private domain for magical members, only. In the wizarding world, it is the Mecca, the lightning rod, that draws the greatest masters of the ancient art of magic and illusion together, from all points of the globe! It is the most powerful and influential society of its kind on this Blue Marble. It is simply called, The Magic Castle. U.S. PRESIDENTS, ROYALTY, HEADS OF STATE
The ledger of names that have trafficked through The Magic Castle comprise the world’s most prepotent movers-andshakers. U.S. Presidents, royalty, and heads of state, and many of Hollywood’s most illustrious icons have collected here, along with the Magi who have inspired its existence, and the legions of devotees who hold coveted membership. When President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan visited The Magic Castle, their entourage consisted of seven armed Secret Service men! Even in this secret hide-away, VIPs are appropriately escorted, according to U.S. and international protocol. The President and Mrs. Reagan attended The Magic Castle’s spectacular Houdini Séance. Even the trained Secret Service men were held spellbound by the proceedings which were, ostensibly, supernatural! All but one, that is. The seventh Secret Service agent stood, resolute, outside the séance room, guarding the entranceway, and, therefore, was not privy to the inner proceedings, all of which delighted the President, Mrs. Reagan, and the six heavilyarmed Secret Service men!
Hollywood’s The Magic Castle once owned, “Genii, The International Conjuror’s Magazine,” its most powerful flagship publication, run by its editor/publisher, Bill Larsen, Jr. Its worldwide influence was formidable. Great Britain’s
Prince Charles, himself an avid fan, but, in addition to that, he is an accomplished magician in his own right. In 1975, Prince Charles auditioned and passed a legerdemain (sleight of hand) test to gain rightful membership in England’s most prestigious magic fraternity, The Magic Circle, based in London! Prince Charles adroitly performed the ancient “Cups and Balls,” considered one of the oldest recorded magic feats, as well as being a routine calibrated to test one’s dexterity and misdirection skills, the quintessential elements in all magic. These two fraternities, England’s The Magic Circle, and America’s The Magic Castle, carry the torch of sorcery that extends back to antiquity. WHAT’S INSIDE THE MAGIC CASTLE?
The Magic Castle is more than just a piece of breath-taking architecture. Its cavernous interior is laden with priceless relics and artifacts amidst secret passageways and hidden chambers. In fact, when first entering the lobby of The Magic Castle and checking in with the receptionist (members only, or if you’re lucky, having a Guest Pass from an active member), your magical journey quickly begins. Visitors must approach the golden owl with the red blinking eyes and utter the secret words, “Open Sesame!” The large bookcase magically moves and a secret panel is revealed that guests disappear through! Going through the short, secret passageway one passes a medieval suit of armor on the right, which often speaks to those who intrude. Not knowing of your surroundings while in this magical domain is like touring the Louvre Museum blindfolded! Even if one does not care for prestidigitation and magic, the Victorian splendor and countless treasures cannot be ignored. Museums, artifacts, and priceless collectibles abound everywhere. Up the Grand Salon Staircase, visitors wind their way to the majestic Main Dining Room and the celebrated Cherub Room, to feast. There are five dining rooms in all. Not knowing of your surroundings can rob you of the precious adornments around you. For example, guests in the Main Victorian dining area may not realize that they are peering through gorgeous cut crystal windows and 180-year-old etched glass from the Imperial Restaurant in Scotland!
Many dining on lobster or filet mignon, pan-seared salmon, or even just a Caesar Salad are sometimes unaware, but, if their gaze were to look heavenward, their eyes would feast on a priceless Tiffany Dome, embedded in the ceiling above them! And the historic Hollywood of old beckons far below, lights twinkling like fireflies in the night, allowing din-
ers a nostalgic view of the old Roosevelt Hotel, landmark for the Motion Pictures’ Academy Awards (the movie Oscars), where they were first presented on May 16, 1929.
Even the most pedestrian of objects are astonishing. The Palace Bar, on the second floor, where you can enjoy your favorite soft or hard beverage, is from a 17th-century London pub (dating back to the early 1600s, when William Shakespeare still walked the earth). Imagine, the Bard may have even quenched his thirst at this very bar! What an astounding notion to ponder. This and countless more pleasures to the eye can be discovered and appreciated throughout The Magic Castle. (Bonus fact: the food at The Magic Castle is most reasonable.) UNDERGROUND CITIES AND SECRET PASSAGEWAYS
Best friend, and fellow magician, Mike Romero, told me of a recent visit to The Magic Castle with family and friends. He explored to his heart’s content, and navigated the many floors, feasted and then imbibed on the finest spirits while visiting the many showrooms to witness some of the greatest magicians showcasing their miracles. Yet, when I asked him if he discovered any of the underground areas, beneath the Magic Castle, he seemed surprised at their existence. In short, they were overlooked! THE HAUNTED WINE CELLAR
The first underground area (on the south side), beneath the Magic Castle, is unbelievable! It is comical in that I could not locate the portal, or entryway to it. So, like a fool, I led my friends from the dining room and past the Corridor of the Stars, and around in a complete circle, back to our original starting point! Yes, I could have asked for directions, but we men can be most stubborn in that regard! After all, look at Moses. He wandered aimlessly around the desert for forty years because he was too stubborn to stop and ask for directions! Hmm, so that puts me in rather good company! I finally asked one of the Knights of the Castle (who are identified by the badges they wear) for directions. And there it was, a most inconspicuous portal and “poof,” we vanished through it and started our journey downward to the Haunted Wine Cellar, located in a network of subterranean catacombs, that include a Hat and Hare Pub (complete with a wizard bartender), a stage for magic shows, and even a virtual ghost party one is challenged to locate through the long haunted corridor of the Haunted Wine Cellar.
THE NORTH SIDE UNDERGROUND
The second underground area is on the north side of the Magic Castle, and is NOT connected to the other (south side) underground, where the Haunted Wine Cellar is located. In regards to the north side underground, its one entry point can be accessed only from the second floor, not far from The Palace of Mystery, which is the largest and most lavish showroom, wherein magic shows, complete with M.C., take place.
Again, I did not know where the entry point was located which descends to the underground area that contains the Inner Circle Ballroom and museum! Purely by accident, we noticed a group of cheerful visitors, drinks in hand, nonchalantly stroll past us, talking and laughing as they went by. Talking to my immediate circle of friends, it suddenly occurred to all of us that the cheerful party of men and women who just passed by, were now silent! In fact, they had disappeared from our view! Looking straight at the wall in the distance, we could not see where they could have gone, as they seemed to have all vanished into thin air! Curious, we retraced their steps and suddenly, it appeared to us -- an open pathway to our right, invisible from where we originally stood! We passed through and downward we went, deeper and deeper, one dog-leg left turn, till we heard the cheerful and collective voices of people, talking, laughing, and many dancing at the Inner Circle Ballroom dance floor! Whew! This called for a drink so straight to the W.C. Fields bar we went to whet our whistles. The Inner Circle Ballroom is some 30-feet under the Parlour of Prestidigitation stage. This subterranean Inner Circle Ballroom houses rare memorabilia from Hollywood’s golden movie era. The Ballroom ceiling reflects what is known as an “infinity illusion.” Though the ceiling is only one-inch thick, the viewer sees an endless, infinite sky above them! Incredible magic! GHOSTS AND PHANTOMS
Like Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Castle, Hollywood’s Magic Castle, likewise, has its share of ghosts, phantoms, and things that go bump-in-the-night! The large men’s restroom, adjacent to the Grand Salon Staircase on the main floor, is haunted in a manner reminiscent of The Phantom of the Opera. As such, strange voices seem to emanate from the mirrors inside, often to the unexpected delight of the men tending to business. One humorous moment was when a large, mountain of a man at the urinal

Fatal Collision - Escondido
On Sunday, November 23, at about 11:13 am, officers from the Escondido Police Department were dispatched to the intersection of Broadway and Valley Pkwy regarding a serious injury collision. As officers arrived, they found two vehicles on the south-west sidewalk. The driver of a tan Honda Civic was found seatbelted and unconscious. Officers quickly determined the driver had no pulse and was not breathing. Officers attempted to remove the driver from the car, but they were unable due to the extensive vehicle damage. EPD Officer Isaac Buan, a former Emergency Medical Technician, performed CPR on the driver in a seated position for several minutes until EFD medics arrived. Unfortunately, the driver was unresponsive to Officer Buan’s heroic life-saving measures and later died at Palomar Hospital as a result of his injuries. The second vehicle involved was a white Toyota Corolla, and both the driver and passenger were transported to Palomar Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Based on witness statements and vehicle damage, it appears the driver of the Honda ran a

What is going on with our Department of Social Services? They propose to pull five state licenses which would close the three child care centers in Escondido which serve 400 low income kids and their families! We have reviewed the alleged violations and find the state is over-zealous and working on thin technicalities.
Has the state really considered what would happen to those 400 low income kids if the Centers are shut down?

At my moment of relief, the phantom appeared briefly to inform me that I was, “A quart low.” The Women’s restroom is also haunted, but in a manner that precludes me from elaboration.
On the second level, adjacent to the Palace of Mystery showroom, is a very old-fashioned wooden phone booth, vintage perhaps fifty or sixty years old. Anyway, it is haunted! Thanksgiving, a Time to Reflect on our Blessings
Thanksgiving has arrived. It’s a time to enjoy family and friends and to take at least a few moments to give thanks about how fortunate we Americans are to live in this land of abundance and liberty.
Thanksgiving commemorates the Pilgrims first harvest in America in 1621. There were numerous Thanksgiving celebrations in early American history, including one proclaimed by George Washington to celebrate the victory over the British at Saratoga during the Revolutionary War. The modern holiday was proclaimed by President Lincoln in 1863, and has been celebrated every year since. We Americans have a great deal to be thankful for. We live in a nation founded on the notion that all men are created equal, with God given freedoms that are inviolate.
The Escondido Fire Department Incident Response Unit (senior volunteers) donated over 600 pounds of food to the Military Moms Ministry at Camp Pendleton to help make Thanksgiving a little easier for our military families. Kudos to these senior volunteers! Meetings/Events Calendar

Today the world surrounding us seems to be descending into chaos. Though violence, terror and disease are sweeping vast areas of the globe, at least here at home we remain confident that we are safe, free and secure, our rights enshrined in a Constitution based on individual liberty, secured by a military second to none. Here in the United States, the rule of law is sacred, government powers are limited and our leaders should serve the people, not the other way around. During this holiday season, we should remember the blessings bestowed upon us by our Creator as free human beings. Whatever our beliefs, we should be thankful for our families, our homes, our liberties and those willing to put their lives on the line to protect all of us.

In one incident where a staffer spanked a child, that staffer has been terminated. The state inspector herself reported the following positive notes:
There are no accessible bodies of water or firearms on the premises. The furniture and equipment are safe, age-appropriate and in good repair. Cots are used for napping. Bedding is identified and stored separately for each child. Rooms have adequate heating, lighting, ventilation, and drinking water is readily available. The floors are clean and safe. The facility is free of flies, other insects or rodents. Bathrooms are maintained with operational toilets and faucets with appropriate temperature. Bathroom is lighted, ventilated, and sanitary. Food service area consists of a kitchen which is clean and free of hazards. Trash receptacles have tightfitted lids, Cleaning supplies are kept inaccessible to children. The outdoor play area is fenced and has sufficient cushioning and adequate shade. Their are operational drinking fountains available. Grounds are free of debris or potential hazards. stored expired medications for children who are no longer attending. The isolation area is the Director's office. The facility menu is posted and adequate food is available for meals/snacks. LP A's reviewed a sample of Personnel Records which contain appropriate documentation which includes the permits as required. There is at least one staff member present with current CPR and First Aid certification. LPA's reviewed a sample of Children's Records which contain appropriate contact information. LPA's reviewed SignIn sheets, The last emergency drill was conducted on 5/30114. There is a current children's roster. Sounds like a pretty well run operation to me.
Aside from the spanking incident, where the staff member was terminated, there was one other case where a child had been alone in a room for a short period of time, following a bathroom break; it is believed the child wandered off into another room on his own. When he was discovered a short time later, he was turned over to his family. Most of the other allegations are simple paperwork issues

As she went to the receptionist's desk, the man sat there, alone and silent. Just as I was thinking I should make small talk with him, a little boy slipped off his mother's lap and walked over to the wheelchair. Placing his hand on the man's, he said, “I know how you feel. My Mom makes me ride in the stroller too.” ••••• As I was nursing my baby, my cousin's six-year-old daughter, Krissy, came into the room. with the big bands of Harry James and then Tommy Dorsey. In 1943, he left band singing and was signed by Columbia Records, launching his career as a soloist.
He became the idol of "BobbySoxers" after Columbia released Sinatra’s first album in 1946, “The Voice of Frank Sinatra.”
Sinatra, ‘The Voice’
For the better part of the 20th century he was known as “The Voice.” Few performers have ever had the magnetism of Francis Albert Sinatra, yet his life was surrounded by controversy because of associations. Much of his rumor-filled life has spiraled into legend.
Francis Albert "Frank" Sinatra Dec. 12, 1915, was an American singer and filmstar. He was born in Hoboken, N.J. to ItalianAmerican parents when America was emerging as a world power. As he entered his early singing career, Sinatra’s personal idol was popular crooner-of-the-day Bing Crosby. By the early to mid1940s, he landed “boy singer” jobs
During the 1940s, he made a number of musical movies for MGM, but by the early 1950s, his professional career had stalled. In 1953, Sinatra was reborn when he was cast in “From Here to Eternity,” which led to an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. One legend has the singer getting the “Eternity” job with the help of a mob friend. Sinatra later was nominated for Best Actor in “Man With The Golden Arm,”(1955) and won critically-acclaim for his role in “The Manchurian Candidate” (1962). With his 1953 film success, Capitol Records signed Sinatra that recorded some of his all-time hits, putting him on top for the rest of his life.
Throughout his career, just how Sinatra took advantage of opportunities remains debatable. Commonly accepted assumptions have Sinatra connected to the Mafia. He never denied some of his friends were of questionable character, but “rumors” never became actual fact. During the 1960s, Sinatra was

Editor’s Note: Bruce Krider and I co-founded a program known as The Puppy Coalition. The mission is to save as many dogs as we can from being needless euthanized.
Bruce, bless his heart, has saved about 40 dogs this year, spending well over $30,000 of his own money in the process. One means of finding homes for dogs scheduled to die is via Craig’s List.
Here is a story that touched my heart . . . and I hope it touches yours as well. ORIGINAL AD:
I learned about this tonight at about 10.30pm but am up at 2 am because I thought the story should be told so that if there was anybody out there who was moved to do something this, they might want to spare the life of a dog.
His name is "Soldier.” He is a year and a half old German Shepherd who has been in the Lancaster (LA County) animal shelter since 10/13. That was when his family moved away and dumped him there. Apparently, they were moving and just couldn't be bothered to take him along.
‘Commentary’ Cont. from Page 7
that can be easily fixed.
One citation, dealing with the keeping of prescription medication for children after they are no longer attending the center, is particularly irksome. The Center staff, knowing the family are low income, held the prescriptions for the family to reclaim, knowing prescriptions cost money, sometimes a lot of money. Staff tried to do the right thing. The state frowns on that. So now the staff has no choice but to require the family to reclaim the medication(s) within 24 hours or they will be disposed of. And the family has to pay for replacement medications. Great thinking, state of California. That will solve a lot of problems for the poor. (Sarcasm intended.)
ECCDC operates programs which serve children from low income families exclusively. Every child ECCDC serves is able to attend solely because of state subsidies. In addition to child care these subsidies provide two meals a day and two snacks for these children plus vision, hearing and dental screenings, as well as additional access to social-emotional and professional therapy for individuals and family units.
On the 24th, Soldier was taken to the "euthanasia room." He had been there about ten days and no one had discovered him and adopted him so his time "was at hand." His luck had run out.
I have heard from people whose job it is to put animals to sleep, mostly dogs, that the animal knows what is going on. They either sense something from the spirits of those who have gone before or they just somehow gather the vibes from the feel of death in the room and the mannerisms of the people there around them, they know what is about to happen to them. Some know it when they are being dragged on a leash down the hall to that room with all four legs stiffly outstretched trying to stop with every ounce of energy they have. But it is futile.
Well, getting back to Soldier, he had been brought to the euthanasia room and was on the "euthanasia table." He was being readied for the injections that would end his short life right then and there. No one had come to get him out so this was gonna be it. As he lay there, he looked at one of the attendants. As he lay there, Soldier knew what they were going to do to him and he stretched out his paw to the hand of the attendant in front
Two of the three centers operate under both day care and infant licenses and one operates only a day care facility. The first facility was founded in 1976. The most recent facility was opened in 2010.
The 9th Street Facility, named after the founder of ECCDC, Lorraine Boyce, is not named in a single allegation as having allowed a single deficiency to occur against this facility or its day care license. Also, the East Valley Parkway Center, named after Betsy Jones, a former Executive Director of ECCDC, the accusation contains only two allegations of deficiencies, both of which would constitute Type B deficiencies, one for failing to file a report of the name change of the director at that facility within 10 days and one for failing to report “an incident that had occurred” on or about May 3, 2013. The Clothier Center on Lincoln Avenue, contains all 10 of the allegations in the accusation. ECCDC has taken strong measures to remedy any problems that may have occurred at that location. Actions the state has already taken has led to de-funding of programs, and may lose even more funding. The center operates on a $4 million budg-

of him and in that instant, a message passed between them. It was something like, "Please don't do this to me. I don't want to die. I am a good dog. Can't you help me? Please...."
Literally a second before the deadly injection, the attendant said. "Stop. Wait. Soldier put his paw into my hand. I can't do this. Let's give him a break. Let's give him some more time." With that, Soldier was taken down off the table and was spared a premature date with "the needle." He was given until October 30. If he has not been chosen by someone to adopt him by Monday evening, he will go, once again, down the hall to the euthanasia room and this time there will be no reprieve. He, will, indeed, be killed. His dead body will go, with numerous others to a rendering plant where they will use his body and those of others killed to be used for commercial purposes. So, as I said, I read about this tonight at 10.30 and here it is 2.15 am but I couldn't sleep until I got this out. I was literally propelled to tell Soldier's story by forces that would just not let me rest or sleep. It was like they were saying, "Get out of bed and tell people about this dog RIGHT NOW." There was to be no arguing on this... Something or someone somewhere, maybe Soldier's guardian angel was not going
to give me peace until this was done. So there you have it. My hope is that someone out there within reach of this ad will see it and decide that maybe now is the time they need to get a family pet. Just maybe they will get "Soldier" a second but permanent reprieve before his date with doom on October 30. Will you be the one? (I already have four dogs by the way. All rescues ... so I am literally over-dogged otherwise I would drive 3 and a half hours up to Lancaster right now and get him. If any of this has moved you to action, Soldier's ID number is A4498915. You should call the shelter at (661) 940-4191. Tell them you are interested in this dog and you wanted to double check his availability. Until someone has made a CTA (commitment to adopt) and has been there and filled out the adoption info, he will not be saved. You have to go there. You can tell them you are interested but nothing counts till the CTA happens. Soldier is in cage L336. The shelter address is 5210 W. Ave. I, Lancaster, CA 93536. Their hours on Monday are 12 noon till 7 pm. I hope someone shows up for him.

The Magic Castle. Magic Castle proprietor, Milt Larsen, told me about it. The Castle has a strict dress code: coats and ties for men, evening dresses for women. One evening, television producer-director, Dick Carson, younger brother of Johnny Carson, showed up, alone, at the Castle reception area – but without a tie. Anticipating such scenarios, the Castle keeps a supply of ties for guests who may have forgotten to put one on. The frontdesk host offered Dick Carson a complimentary tie for the evening – but he flatly refused to wear it! Dick was reminded of protocol: No tie, no entrance. In turn, Dick reminded the hostess who he was, implying that he was above such rules! The situation escalated as both sides remained steadfast. Unable to reach resolution, the hostess called upstairs to speak with Castle owner, Milt Larsen. Informed of the stalemate, Milt placed a call to Johnny Carson and asked him to make a ‘judgment call,’ regarding his brother, Dick. An honorable member of the Magic Castle, himself, Johnny Carson fumed: “Put my G—damned brother on the phone!!”
Milt recalled that, “Johnny apparently read his brother The Riot Act, and that was that.”
Dick put on the tie. The Magic Castle is a place full of unexpected magic. A specific table, across from the main Grand Salon Bar on the first floor, is haunted by a mischievous poltergeist. Unexpected guests are often startled to find that their drinks, purses, or whatever else is placed on their table, begin to mysteriously move or change places whenever they look away! (Ask the barkeep or a Knight of the Castle (they wear badges) to whisper which table is haunted, then just sit back and have fun watching the reactions from your family or friends!)
The Haunted Bar Stool is located at the Grand Salon Bar, itself. Again, secretly inquire which stool it is, then – without drawing suspicion – make certain a member of your group sits there. Then, just sit, talk shop, and watch the fun begin! The person perched on The Haunted Bar Stool will never forget the experience! It is hilarious because everyone will actually see the illusion first, before the ‘victim’ does!
The Magic Castle is not a stuffy, or pretentious place. The real magic is the friendliness, and casualness that presents itself. It is truly a place to relax, have fun, and ‘let your hair down.’ Occasionally, a lively discussion may break out

closely tied to the Sands Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Because of the hotel’s alleged mob ties, Sinatra was suspected of having a role. Later, when Sinatra bought a share of the Cal-Neva Hotel & Casino in Lake Tahoe, the Nevada Gaming Commission denied the resort a gaming license because of Mafia members, namely Sam Giancana, frequented the resort.
Sinatra continued to deny any illegal association, yet maintained his loyalty to those of whom he called “my friends.” Over the years, many of those friends got him jobs with variousnightclubs. In the late ‘70s, one of those friends, a club owner in New Jersey, had given Sinatra a break when he was having a tough time finding work. That owner was the benefactor of Sinatra’s loyalty. The owner was having financial problems so the crooner appeared at his club for a week of full-house performances, not taking any money. While Sinatra had been a strong supporter of John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign, it wasn’t the only time he would help get a President elected. During the 1980s, Sinatra was a stanch supporter and friend of Ronald Reagan, who was at the opposite end of the political spectrum.
Sinatra continues to be one of the best-selling artists of all time, having sold more than 150 million records worldwide. In 1985, Sinatra was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Reagan and the Congressional Gold Medal in 1997. He won 11 Grammy Awards as well as the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. One of the most popular and influential musical artists of the 20th century, Sinatra’s popularity is matched only by Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and Michael Jackson.

and so we walked from the car to the duck pond and on to the playground hand in hand.
On the playground, though, she is more independent than any of the other grandchildren. She likes me to be close enough to help if she gets into difficulty, but she’d rather do everything by herself.
Pastor Tom Fry Retired, Church of the Nazarene Be Thankful
It was a grandparent’s delight. Our granddaughter (age 4) was going to spend the day with us while her mom worked a substitute teaching assignment. Eventually we ended up at the park to do two of her favorite things: feed the ducks and play on the playground.
I have a hard and fast rule that the younger grandchildren have to hold my hand while we are in a parking lot. It’s mostly for safety, but it’s also part ruse. Once they start exercising their independence, holding Grandpa’s hand is not a priority. This last grandchild is a little different. She actually likes to hold my hand
I was a respectful distance behind as she made her way toward another piece of equipment and pulled herself up into the cup-like apparatus. For a moment, she was off balance, might’ve felt a bit uneasy like she might fall. Instinctively, without even looking back, she reached her hand out, knowing that my hand would be right there to steady her. And it was.
On the way home I was recalling my recent study of the ancient Hebrews. They walked hand in hand with God a lot of the time. They knew that God loved them and would take care of them. But they were often mesmerized by the attraction of one “playground” after another, and would break their handclasp with God and run off on their own. Until….They too, jumped into something new and suddenly felt off balance, as if they might fall. Instinctively, they reached back, without even looking, certain that God’s hand would be there to steady them. For the very same reason as my granddaughter. They knew they were loved and that God would care for them.

There have been some major concerns about oil polluting the underground water supply in the Sand Hills area of South Dakota. Most of this has been worked out subject to approval by the Supreme Court of South Dakota. I was not much in favor of this deal, but now I have a better understanding of it I hope our leaders in Washington get this deal done. At least that’s my opinion right now. Naturally I reserve the right to be wrong. I’ve been there before.

The true genesis of The Magic Castle was long before I was around, but, my “Uncle Miltie,” who co-founded it (“Milt Larsen,” to you muggles), has told me of its colorful legacy, much of which I have revealed for the first time in this very exclusive article for The Paper.
So, how does one get into The Magic Castle, since it is mem-

“My New Computer Will be Obsolete by the Time I get it Home”
In the “old days” there was truth in that statement, but today? Not so much. The Internet has changed everything.
Gordon Moore, one of Intel’s founders made an observation in 1965 that has become known as “Moore’s Law.” Moore predicted that technology would find a way to double the density of transistors on silicon wafers every two years. David House, another Intel executive modified “Moore’s Law” to predict that combining the doubling of transistors with other technological advances would double CPU processing power every 18 months. The way to measure CPU processing power is to count the number of instructions it can execute in a
single second. This measure is called MIPs (Millions of Instructions per Second). At the dawn of the PC age in 1982 an Intel 286 CPU measured 1.2 MIPs (that’s 1,200,000 million instructions per second). By 2000 the average CPU measured 3600 MIPs, in 2006 the average PC CPU scored 19,000 MIPs, 92,000 MIPs in 2012 and today’s multicore CPUs are closing in on 200,000 MIPs (that is 200,000,000,000 or 2 septillion instructions per second.) or two hundred thousand times faster than IBM’s first PC.
As technology created ever more powerful PCs, Microsoft developed ever more capable and resource hungry OS (operating systems) to keep pace. Software developers also expanded the capabilities of their products to take advantage of the growing PC power. Gaming, video/audio, solids modeling and animation applications benefitted from every increase in performance but in the last ten years fewer and fewer users have been able to benefit from all the increase in computing power. That is the reasons that Windows XP has been able to hang on for so many years.
any faster than the download speed of 10 to 100 Mbits per second which is well within the range of nearly any PC. You can do your banking, send an e-mail and cruise Amazon at flank speed with your ten year old wart hog. You can’t listen to music, type a letter or play Solitaire any faster with a new i7 than you can with your old Pentium IV.
With PCs remaining technologically viable for ten years or more many consumers no longer view performance improvements as strong an incentive to purchase new PCs. PC makers have to rely on Microsoft to keep the ball rolling. Microsoft does everything it can to force users to buy new
PCs by sabotaging its older operating systems. Today XP is under attack.
Users can often avoid buying a completely new notebook or desktop PC simply by upgrading the old one to Windows 7. Upgrading the memory and operating system on a seven year old Win XP or Vista PC may be far more cost effective than purchasing a new one. A PC up to seven years old often has significant value as a trade in on a new Windows 7 PC. We upgrade them with Win 7 Pro and 4GB of RAM and resell them, they rarely last more than a couple of days on our shelf.
As Internet applications have come to dominate most user activities, computer speed has lost its appeal. A ten year old Windows XP PC zips around the WWW and downloads streaming video at the same speed as one that is 1000 times faster. Why? Because the Internet download speed is the pacing item. A super fast PC can’t suck electrons off the Internet
"Arthritis Joint Pain Gone Within Weeks with Laser Therapy"
Living with Arthritis pain can affect every part of your life. It keeps you from enjoying the good things in life - time with grandkids, playing golf, even working in the yard.
Wouldn’t it be nice to get out of bed without pain for just one morning? Every time you try and push through the pain... like standing or walking for a long period of time.. . you pay for it for the next 2-3 days with even more pain. So, you take some pain pills... Pain Pills Are Not the Answer Do you remember the Vioxx scandal?
It was a medication designed to relieve arthritis pain... but like all drugs, it had side effects.
After years of use worldwide, the makers withdrew it from the market because of the overwhelming evidence it caused heart attacks and strokes.
There’s a time to use pain medications, BUT not before seeking a natural way to correct the CAUSE of the problem! Ask yourself... after taking all these pain medications... maybe for years...
Do You Have Any of these Arthritis-related Symptoms?
• Osteoarthritis • Rheumatoid Arthritis • Bursitis or Tendonitis • Shoulder Pain • Back pain • Knee Pain • Degenerative Joint Disease • Lumbar Disc Problems • Aching Pain in the Arms or Legs
older- that you should expect to have Arthritis? Sure, if you don't take care of your damaged joints now as you get older they will get worse.
However, old age is not the cause of your Arthritis. I'll venture to say all 360 joints in your body are the same age, yet Arthritis and joint degeneration has not affected every one of them - only your previously injured joints that never healed properly.
My name is Dr. Stephen Heilman, D.C., owner and clinical director of North Inland Pain Relief Institute. Over the past 15 plus years, I have seen thousands of people come in to my office that were suffering from Arthritis pain. After treatment, they often leave the institute pain free or with significantly reduced pain. How can we achieve these results? It is quite simple: our years of experience and a dedication to the safest and most effective healing technologies - like Nexus Laser Therapy.
We have made it our institute's mission to help those suffering with chronic pain like you. What is Laser Therapy?
Laser Therapy is on the cutting edge of pain relief. Laser Therapy provides healing energy to the tissues that are swollen, painful, stiff, and inflamed from Arthritis. You are in pain because there is damage to the soft tissues of the body: muscles, tendons, ligaments, and the tissues surrounding the joints. Laser Therapy significantly benefits these injured tissues by speeding up the healing process, by

faster than comparable therapies. Laser Therapy is used by elite pain centers around the world and by professional sports teams. In fact, we have the same laser used by over 40 professional sports teams, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Rangers, and Boston Celtics. So when Laser Therapy is added to the conventional physical therapies, the results are amazing. By the way, the treatment is painless! Is This Solution Right For You!
It's time for you to find out if this treatment is your Arthritis solution. For 20 days only, believe it or not, $47 will get you all The services I normally charge new patients $197 for! What does The Arthritis Laser Evaluation offer include? Take a look at what You will receive:
I. An in-depth consultation about your health and well-being where I will listen... really listen... to the details of your case. 2. A complete joint, muscle and ligament exam. 3. Feel the Improvement; Say "Yes" to Life again! "I have suffered with a painful knee ever since the Vietnam War. Before this laser treatment, I had pain whenever I went up or down the stairs. I went through several injections, wore knee braces, and had all kinds of tests and none of it worked at all. Dr. Heilman thought that Laser therapy could help me and he was right. The treatment felt really good and you could actually feel it working. The pain is so much less that I can walk up and down the stairs again.” Joe Heard, Escondido, CA.
Arthritis Can Be Successfully Treated
With our "Arthritis Laser Evaluation," we can find the problem and then correct it. Think of how you could feel in just a few short weeks. Laser Therapy can help your life change for the better.
Start your body on the way to pain-free, normal living. Feel your stiff and painful joints rest, relax, and finally have less pain. Feel your knotted muscles become more supple and feel the strength in your muscles increase. As you begin to see motion returning to your joints, you are reducing chances of immobility and disability - a crippling future that you can prevent. You're playing golf again, exercising again, playing with your grandkids again, and even walking with that spring in your step again! Healthy, pain-free living should be yours.

Would You Consider Helping Save Rescued Dogs by Fostering Them?
The Puppy Coalition Foundation rescues many dogs from regional kill shelters. These dogs are often rescued on their last day of life in these “shelters.” The recipe for providing a foster home for a rescued dog is simple:
1.) A little space for a doggie bed somewhere in your home. We will even provide a bed. 2.) Spend a little time with the dog to go out and do “their business” and get some exercise walking. We like to suggest at least 45 minutes over the course of the day. More is great. These dogs are house-broken. 3.) Then add love. These dogs crave love because in the preceding months they have gotten little and they all yearn for close relationships with humans. The Puppy Coalition will provide dog food and handle veterinary needs.
We will work around your schedule to show the foster dogs to those who may be interested and potential adopters. We believe that you will find it personally rewarding helping a rescued dog to get a fresh start in a new life. If you would like to learn more about this opportunity to volunteer to help save some of these wonderful animals, call Bruce at 760-612-9156.
