I learned about Annie online and she was getting on the short side of her stay at the South L.A. Animal Shelter, meaning she had stayed there about as long as they were going to let her before putting her to sleep. Annie had a bunch of folks rooting for her and trying to find someone who would save her. I saw her picture and decided it was time to pitch in and help save the girl. She was due to be put down within twenty four hours.
I got her ID number and the address of the shelter which I had not been to before and drove up there on the 20th of February. It was an easy save. That means there were no lines that day and there were ample shelter staff to make the adoption process move fast. I was in and out in twenty minutes. This is contrasted with L.A. County Shelters which can be a couple of hours where it is like the DMV – take a number and wait. And then wait some more. As I finished the last of the paperwork and paid the $102 fee, one of the highest shelter fees in the area, they brought out Annie. She was full of life and seemed to know she was busting out of that place. Her senses were telling her something. Her sniffer was going overtime and she was very animated.
When you get a dog out of a shelter there is a change that comes over them.

get there every day to get them out and walk them around. In addition to my three dogs at home and another besides Annie in the kennel, I get lots of walking. But she needs it as part of her “fitness program.”
Upon putting the word out to my “friends” on Facebook one woman in Sunnyvale offered to foster Annie. She had fostered other dogs four or five times and was offering to foster Annie. That would change the adoption methods because I would have to shift my focus to the San Jose area instead of San Diego but for what it costs to board dogs full time in kennels, I needed to get her in a less costly place while we looked for a good home. On Thursday, the 28th, we hopped in my 2007 Honda Element and began the 720mile round trip journey. The plan was to drive up straight through and then possibly even return late that night if I was feeling up to it.

You see them get happy immediately following a time when happiness was not in their vocabulary. Because these dogs get rescued at the last minute generally means they have been there and the anxiety, boredom, worry and hopelessness which had built up over their stay was suddenly being washed away in hope and optimism. So back to Annie. Annie had been a stray that was picked up and brought in. There was an old microchip but it yield-
ed no current data and she was without a family. I was her new “family,” at least for a while. She appears to me to be about 4 years old but could be one year either way. It was hard to tell. Annie was a little overweight and that was magnified by the fact that she is not a large German Shepherd. She is on the small side so the weight issue seems like more than what it would seem on another of a more normal, larger size. We would have to work on the weight. My routine with these dogs I save is that they go to San Marcos Kennels and I try to

All was fine initially while we chatted but after a while I began to get the sense that maybe this foster volunteer was backing out of her commitment. She commented that she was concerned that she might get a back ache if Annie pulled on the leash while walking. After a demonstration, that appeared to fall away. Then she thought her dog, a year old male Shepherd might not get along with Annie, who had gotten along with every dog and person I had seen her with but she didn’t want to have to deal with two dogs fighting. she is, declined to hop on the bed. There were two beds and it seemed a waste. She slept on the floor over by the door to the motel room and was deep in REM sleep in only a few minutes. Must have been a good dream from the sounds of it. She had just had a long day and was ready to hit the sack.

The alarm rang at 5 am and I got up rather mechanically. Getting up wasn’t what I wanted to do but the day was not waiting and I wanted to get out of the metro area before the traffic got going plus I had to have Annie back at the kennel before 1 pm when they would close down for three hours. Our stops would have to be few and Annie would have to do her business on cue (which she always did.) It seemed like she got the sense of urgency.
I finally just said, “Well, it looks like you are very reluctant to foster her now and since I don’t want to go through the time and expense of yet another long trip to come back and get Annie, we better just go because it will be a long trip back and we need to get some rest so we can get up early tomorrow to go back home.” I was saying all this at the same time I was actually having a hard time seeing how this person could have the nerve to tell me after having just driven 400 miles at her invitation, only to turn us away.

A policeman pulls a man over for speeding and asks him to get out of the car. After looking the man over he says, "Sir, I couldn't help but notice your eyes are bloodshot. Have you been drinking?" The man gets really indignant and says, "Officer, I couldn't help but notice your eyes are glazed. Have you been eating doughnuts?"
A young woman was having a physical examination and was very embarrassed because of a weight problem. As she removed her last bit of clothing, she blushed. "I'm so ashamed, doc," she said. "I guess I let myself go."

"You really think so, doc?" she asked. The doctor held a tongue depressor in front of her face and said, "Of course. Now just open your mouth and say moo."
A friend took her dog to the parlor for a haircut, and asked what it would cost. Being told that it would cost her 60 bucks, she was shocked, "I only pay 50 bucks for my own haircut," she said with disdain. "But you don't bite, do you?" the groomer quickly replied. THOUGHT DAY:

treats and one of those sanitized dog bones with the fake but tasty marrow in the middle and kept Annie occupied with those things. At other times she wanted to ride “shotgun” in the front passenger seat and check out the action out of the front window and passenger window. Still other times she preferred to sit in the middle of the car, looking out the front window but from in between the two front seats. A good little traveler. It was always funny watching her trying to arrange herself on the front seat in the most comfortable way. I picked up a few tips.
We got back to San Marcos at 12:42 pm and just enough time for me to get her to walk a little more before handing her back to the kennel staff. She once again obliged me with some DNA samples before going back in. I told the staff to give her a good bath, a good grooming and a ribbon to finish off her whirlwind trip to northern California.
We got to know each other better on the trip and I learned how special she really is. I like her a lot. And she is a big kisser. She likes to show her appreciation for the things you do for her. What I left out was that this was a second failed attempt to place her in a home. The first failed the Saturday prior when a person in northeastern Arizona who wanted both her and Rex, another Shepherd I have in the kennel refused to let us inspect her home and the premises to ensure the dogs would have a proper place to live. That trip would have been even longer than the Sunnyvale trip. It has been hard but we are determined to do the right thing by her. Annie is a very unique looking Shepherd. Michael James Hemphill, 58, of Escondido, was facing eviction. He got involved in an argument with the friend of his landlady and, it is alleged, he shot the friend. Hemphill has pleaded not guily last Friday to charges of murder. Hemphill faces up to 35 years to life in prison if convicted of first-degree murder and an allegation that he used a gun to kill Brandon Sanchez, according to the District Attorney’s office.
Vista Superior Court Judge Marshall Hockett ordered Hemphill jailed in lieu of $1 million bail. Escondido police responded about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday to a report that shots had been fired on McDonald Lane, near Alexander Drive, in a neighborhood east of Felicita Road. When officers arrived, they found Sanchez, 36, outside of a trailer in the backyard. He

had been shot once in his chest and died at the scene, police Lt. Neal Griffin said.
A woman at the residence stated that she had been trying unsuccessfully to evict Hemphill, who lived in a trailer on the property. Police claim Hemphill provoked the argument and shot Sanchez in an unprovoked attack.
Hemphill called 911 to report the shooting. He was arrested at the scene. North County Sprinter Trains Back?
A North County Transit District official claims the North County Sprinter trains may be back on the tracks in "a matter of weeks." As of March 9th of this year, the light-rail system was shut down due to accelerated brake rotor wear. Originally, officials guessed the shutdown would be two to four months. The Oceanside-Escondido rail line has received heavy critibedroom. She pulled the drapes back and pointed toward the patio. And there it was. A rather largish snake. Thick, maybe 4' long. No rattles. I began to open the sliding glass door to get a better look. "Nay, nay, I pray thee kind sire, open not yon portal lest the serpent attack us!"
Well, she didn't exactly say that. What I think she said was, "You open that door and I'll clobber you with my cast iron skillet, chum!"
Man About Town Snakes Alive!

I'm pretty sure it was a gopher snake rather than a garter snake. A bit too large for a garter snake . . . and

Mixed reactions have been heard from a variety of persons concerning the new law restricting overnight RV parking in Carlsbad.
Many Carlsbad residents are pleased but RV campers, visiting tourists, and those who live in their RV’s say the change will make them homeless. The restrictions became effective on March 14, although the city won’t actually start enforcing them until Aug. 1. aggressive. Garter snakes are not very aggressive . . . gopher snakes will try to emulate a rattler . . . and they can do a pretty good job of it, too. They coil, they will strike . . . and they might bite you. But their venom, if they have any, is not toxic. Still, getting bit by any kind of snake is not an experience I seek.
What had drawn Evelyn's attention was the fact that Punkin, my least favorite cat, was lying on the carpet, behind the bedroom drapes, sleeping. When she the snake saw her she apparently pawed at it through the glass. The snake, in response, coiled and struck at Punkin, striking the glass hard and making a loud thudding noise. This startled the cat and set the pups to running around as well. Knowing Evelyn, I have a hunch she, too, was more than a little startled. Snakes are not high on her priority of treasured wildlife.

Supporters of the ordinance say it’s not aimed at the homeless, but instead at a long-standing problem with people who leave their oversized vehicles parked for extended periods on public streets.
In the past, RVs and other oversized vehicles could be parked on the street up to 72 hours without a permit before they had to be moved to a different spot.
The new ordinance prohibits parking those types of vehicles on city streets between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. However, residents and visitors can get free annual permits to park their large vehicles on the street for up to 72 hours at a stretch, several times a year. The city recently installed about 30 red-and-white signs explaining the new ordinance along major thoroughfares, mainly at points where drivers enter the city.

Several times evelyn came in, looking out the window, searching for the snake. "I wonder where he went," she mumbled.
"If you'll open the sliding glass door, step out on the patio and then gingerly walk along the perimeter of our house, following the foundation, you just might spot it again . . . or its mate," I offered, always being the helpful one with advice.
"No, I don't think so," she said.
"Or it might, even as we speak, be slithering down a gopher hole, seeking out its breakfast . . . or, given the time of day, its brunch."
"Well, we sure do have plenty of gophers. It ought to find plenty of food," she observed.

Right at the top of the list is Kiwanian Barbara Sanchez, principal of Lincoln Elementary School in Escondido. Everyone was raving about how Barbara’s “Young Marines,” students from her school who were outfitted in Marine type uniforms, so efficiently helped the little tykes catch and land their first trout at the now famous “Kiddie Pond.” The Kiddie Pond is stocked with hundreds of hungry trout and kids 7 years of age and younger are the only anglers allowed to fish that pond. Poles, hooks, bait, all supplied and there are plenty of
Kiwanian, Escondido Senior Anglers, and Young Marines, all present and eager to help the young ‘uns.
Not a much prettier picture than the smiles and laughter of kids catching their first trout.

The Escondido Humane Society was recently awarded a $1,000 grant from the ASPCA as part of the $100K Challenge to Save Animals’ Lives. Funds from the grant will be used to help shelter, feed and care for the more than 6,400 homeless animals that the Escondido Humane Society shelters each year. The grant was awarded through the photo contest of the $100K Challenge, and Escondido resident Terry Grenier scored a winning entry with her dog, Sammy Girl.
The Escondido Humane Society was the first and only San Diego County shelter to win a spot in the ASPCA Challenge and competed against 49 shelters nationwide for a chance at more than $500,000 in grant funding. The Humane Society found homes for 1,058 animals during the three-month competition, and placed 37th overall. Meeting/Events Calendar

Last Thursday evening a 6year-old boy apparently ran out into the street in front of his grandmother’s house in Vista and was struck by a vehicle. The youth, Isaac Nutter, lived in Carlsbad with his mother, Fanny Carchure, and 1-year old brother, James. The incident was reported at 6:08 p.m. in the area of Melrose Drive and Spires Street, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Bruce comes every day to take me to a dog park and play for an hour or more but its not like having a real home or having my own family. He tries to be there for me but I still sit in a kennel for the other 22 hours every day. I would really like to sleep at the foot of my master's bed and go hang out and just be a pal.
I am great with all dogs and people except that I am a little fearful of people when I don't know them. There were some people in the past that were not nice to me so new people need to show me they are not going to hurt me before I am really comfortable. The staff at the kennel all call me a "love" and I love them as well.

It is easy to understand that our courts need a broader base of qualified potential jurists. If the legislature would pass bills that required all businesses to make employees available without docking their pay or charging the absence against vacation time or sick time the jury pool would expand proportionately. Also, the reimbursement rates for jury duty and mileage are seriously out of touch with economic reality. Let's address these issues and find responsible solutions to the jury pool problem. There are certain rights and duties, such as voting and jury duty that are rightfully reserved only for citizens. This

The City’s Community Services Department recently launched a needs assessment survey to determine resident priorities pertaining to community recreational wants and needs. It’s that time again when the Oceanside Historical Society begins their monthly historical walking tours through our downtown area. From now through September, the Oceanside Historical Society will host their monthly walking tours on the second (2nd) Saturday of each month. All walks begin at 9:00 AM in the Oceanside Civic Center Plaza (300 North Coast Highway), in front of the Oceanside Library. All walks go at a leisurely pace through downtown Oceanside and through nearby residential areas, around 1.5 miles.

Avoiding exploits on the Internet requires vigilance. Because the Internet transcends all geo-political boundaries, there are no comprehensive rules of law that govern fraudulent or criminal activities on the WWW. Each country is responsible for enforcing its own laws regarding the Internet. Western nations typically have laws pertaining to criminal activity by citizens originating within their borders but many Eastern nations either don’t have or don’t
You’re Now Free to Work for Yourself
Last week, working Californians started earning money for themselves instead of giving it to the government. Tax Freedom Day, April 24, marked the end of the 114 days that Californians have to work each year to pay off their federal, state and local taxes. The non-partisan Tax Foundation calculates Tax Freedom Day for the nation and each state. It assumes that the nation starts working on January 1, earning the same amount each day and spending this income only on taxes. Tax Freedom Day “arrives” when citizens have earned enough to pay off all of their taxes. Californians

Malware attacks fall into two categories. Covert attacks are designed to avoid detection. They quietly mine data and pass it on to criminal “botnets” without disrupting your PCs operation. Overt attacks are visible and often disruptive. They seek shortterm benefits by exploiting the computer or the user directly.
E-mail hacking is a common covert attack. You get a message asking you to verify your account with your Email account username and password. You comply not knowing that you have just responded to a “phishing” attack. The “phishermen” now have access to your e-mail account. If this attack was for the purpose of “data mining” you will never know you’ve been hacked. The “phisherman” will use or sell the access to your account. Someone will be reading your in and out E-mail “mining” data on you and your contacts and you will never know it.
The E-mail hack becomes overt if the purpose of the “phishermen” is to use your account to contact others. They may exploit the trust or influence you possess with your contacts to promote scams, sell products or create “hits” on commercial URLs. They may use your account to contact only your address book or for mass mail-
ings. Either way you will know about it pretty quickly and will be forced to change your E-mail access information. Your E-mail provider may even shut down your account for excessive traffic or user complaints.
E-mail service providers may periodically ask you to verify your account. How can you know if the request is legit? Many providers offer a “personal stamp” option. You select an object, color and key words that will appear every time your provider contacts you. If you don’t have a “stamp” and you are asked to verify your info in order to gain access to your account simply back out and access your Email account by typing it into your browser (IE type: yahoo e-mail sign-

Other “Phishing” attacks are used to con users out of personal information. Age, SSN, driver’s license, birthplace and date, bank account #, credit card and pin #s, addresses etc. What may seem to be a harmless request for a single piece of personal information may be the last piece of data they need. Criminal “botnets” are extremely patient and efficient at collecting data. It may take them several years to piece together all the information needed to steal your identity for criminal purpose.
