FLEX DAY

The FLEX day is intended for use by teachers who have exceeded the annual staff development hours required by the State and the District prior to the FLEX day. The intent is to provide an option to substitute sufficient staff development hours for one of the State required staff development days for teachers as set on the academic calendar. 1. Approval from the principal/supervisor must be obtained. 2. An additional six hours of noncontract hours must be earned to exchange for a FLEX day. Noncontract hours earned must be recorded in the District professional development system three weeks prior to the designated FLEX day. Certified, degreed professionals may earn a FLEX day. If a stipend or other compensation is earned for noncontract hours, FLEX hours cannot be earned. Hours used for a FLEX day cannot be used for the policy-required 12 non-contract hours.

In this module, participants will learn about still production apps that are loaded onto the SBISD PreK - 1st grade iPads. At their simplest, photographs can capture the essence of a thought or a story. Some still photographs have become iconic historical visuals (think of the image of 6 Marines raising the United States flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II) and legendary in the entertainment industry (think of Jack Nicolson's wild-eyed unshaven, sinister grin in The Shining). Just like the visuals mentioned above, your students can create some extraordinary images to represent their stories. This expedition, and others, can be found in the itslearning course “PL Pre-K - 1st Grade Journeys”. Click here for instructions on finding and enrolling in the course.

In this module, participants will learn about video production apps that are loaded onto the SBISD PreK - 1st grade iPads. Some people have the misconception that video production requires massive video and audio equipment with producers and directors guiding actors to give Oscar worthy performances. Video production at the core is capturing moving images and editing them together to make a cohesive story. We are lucky that we live in a day and age where we no longer need the big heavy cameras and boom mics to make quality videos. It is as simple as an idea, an iPad and an app to have your students up and running with creating awesome videos in your class. This expedition, and others, can be found in the itslearning course “PL Pre-K - 1st Grade Journeys”. Click here for instructions on finding and enrolling in the course.

In this module, participants will learn about coding apps that are loaded onto the SBISD PreK - 1st grade iPads. Talking about teaching kids to code is moving towards the mainstream of education. Coding really is the new type of literacy. As computers continue to become a more integral part of our daily lives, it's going to become just as important to teach our children to code as it is teach them to read. Many people don't realize that coding is a creative endeavor. We can create games, videos, websites, art and really almost anything imaginable. What's more, we can teach this new kind of creative literacy to our youngest children. In the same way that there are developmentally appropriate ways to expose young children to reading and writing, there are developmentally appropriate ways to introduce young children to coding. This expedition, and others, can be found in the itslearning course “PL Pre-K - 1st Grade Journeys”. Click here for instructions on finding and enrolling in the course.
