AXEL SORIANO

Hello! I love creating. Wether it has to do with design or composing a song. I love the process of design and being able to step back and see how one idea can manifest into reality. I graduated from San Jose State University’s industrial design program. This is where I learned how to apply creativity into the everyday objects that we interact with. I believe design is a powerful tool that improves relationships between us and the world we live in. Design has taught me that there are problems waiting to be solved all the time. I only wish to help solve them.

COMMAND

The consumer product world for DJ’s is filled with boundless tools and instruments. In recent years the traditional turntable has been slowly pushed aside to make form of a new instrument. MIDI controllers are a complete digital makeover for DJ’s. I wanted to design a DJ controller that encompassed seriousness, fun, simplicity, and interaction for the user.

User Command is designed for mid level to experienced DJs. Intuitive and easy to use, Command is better utilized for the savy DJ.

M o c k- up s Designing mock ups gave me a great amount of detail in how the design would feel and look on a 3D scale that exploration sketches cannot do. I started to encounter ergonomic insight and how I wanted the controller to feel in the hands of the user.

Ref i ni n g

Seriousness, fun, and simplicity were my goals for my final design. I wanted to design an aesthetic that DJ’s respected and took seriously. I wanted the design to be fun to use and was simple enough for DJ intuition as well. I formated the top configuration to resemble traditional DJ setups so the experience felt familiar. The look may seem familiar but the experience is a brand new one.

Accelerometer Touch Handles When the user picks up the controller by the touch sensors, this engages the accelerometer. The user can pick up the controller and wave it to manipulate sounds for a unique and fun experience!

Built in Sound Card Having a built in sound card allows for the highest quality sound. The most advantageous part of a built in sound card is that it reduces the need of an external power. This allows for less wires which means less mess!

Fa m i l i ar i t y I incorporated universally understood mechanisms that represent control into the final design. The act of turning and pivoting the object would result in a change of sound for the DJ controller.

DJE-2500

I wanted to design in ear monitors for DJ’s that help prevent ear damage and ear fatigue. DJ’s work in a setting that is detrimental to the ear drum and over time can cause permanent hearing loss. 4,000 KHZ is the danger zone in terms of frequency for the human ear drum. 110 DB (decibal) is the loudest the human ear can withstand without suffering from ear damage. 120 DB and higher is the decibal level often heard in clubs, which is the DJ environment. Using existing technologies and sound dampening materials, I designed in ear monitors to replace traditional headphones to help prevent ear damage.

Internal Equalization

Memory Foam Earbuds

Equalization allows the manipulation of certain sound frequencies. This means better and safer sound quality for the user.

Memory foam expands to the ear canal to create optimum comfort. The memory foam simultaneously dampens loud decibel levels.

Beat Port Holes

LED Lit Glass

Poke holes create an opening for sound to help escape throughout the device. This prevents a “muffled sound quality.

Blue light is lit to indicate sound is emitted. The orange glow indicates that the device is on stand by. The lit glass adds a subtle presence between the DJ and the product.

When tackling this design I envisioned this product to be part of Pioneer’s DJE product line. Pioneer is a trusted, reliable and respected company. Pioneer mixers and turntables are the most used by Dj’s, however their headphone and ear bud products are not often utilized. The DJE-2500 would be the solution to this problem. A new in ear headphone that looks different, but most importantly saves the ear drums of the DJ.

Sa ving E ars DJE-2500 fits comfortably in the user’s ear. Most importantly it helps prevent hearing loss. The internal equalization cuts out the 4,000khz harmful frequencies. The decibel threshhold of the DJE-2500 goes to 105 DB. The harmful area is 110DB.

Vex

Vex is a line of high end studio monitors using various high volume and low volume manufacturing methods. Vex uses material mashups to create beautiful contrast. Vex is designed to please the ears and eyes.

Low Volume Materials: -Oak Wood -Aluminum -Graphene -Rubber Processes: -Bent Wood Lamination -CNC Machine -Screws Dimensions Height: 15.6inches Width: 12.3inches Depth: 10.8inches

High Volume Materials: -Polycarbonate plastic -Aluminum -Graphene Processes: -Injection Molding -CNC Machine -Screws -In-mold Decoration Dimensions: Height: 15.5inches Width: 10.8inches Depth: 11inches

TMA -3

Everyone’s head size is different. Proper fitting headphones are required in order to achieve the best experience for the user. If the headphones do not fit properly then that will lead to ear helix pain and poor listening experiences.

Poor S ound D isc o m f o r t

Existing P ro d u ct The existing AIAIAI TMA headbands have incremental adjusting. This constraints the amount you can adjust the headphones. It does not account for all head sizes.

Redesign AIAIAI has a distinct aesthetic in their products. The TMA-3’s are my take on their line of headphone products.

Fu l l Adj us t a b ility The main redesign was incorporating full adjustability into the headband. To allow this, I took away the incremental adjustability and added mobile ball joints that run on sliders instead. This allows a complete range of adjustability for any head size.

Ove r view

The goal of the project was to design an “above the knee prosthetic leg for children who have been affected by local land mines in Colombia. The total cost of the prosthetic should be $30 or under.

Lla n o s

The region most affected by landmines in Colombia is the Llanos region where the Caqueta and Meta departments are situated. These departments harbor hide outs for the FARC (The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) and other paramilitary groups that produce coca plants and where the first steps of production of cocaine occur.

Pe r s o n a Name: Daniel Rueda Age: 11 years old Location: Llanos, Colombia When Daniel was 9 years old he lost a leg when he was on the way back home because he accidently stepped on a land mine. Now he has difficulty going to school. He likes to play football, and he wants to go to another country for higher education.

Design Strategy #1: made of 100% local materials, resources, labor Design Strategy #2: made of mix of imported parts, locally made parts/labor Design Strategy #3: made in China, India, or other hub Design Strategy #4: other?

-Same sized screws

We feel that design strategy # 2 would fit better since we might end up using 3D printing for some parts of the prosthetic along with local materials to reduce cost and be environmentally friendly.

-Colombian culture -Recycled materials -Same materials -3D printed parts

Ide at i on The ideation process was heavily inspired by the materials chosen for the prosthetic. The form followed the function and materials.
