Guitars John primarily is assosciated with his “Black One” Fender Stratocaster, but also has a signature line of Fender guitars coming in varied colors. The pickups feature a scooped midrange citing Sting’s voice as the inspiration for his unique tone in Rolling Stone Magazine. The Stevie Ray Vaughan Stratocaster was the first guitar that John loved, SRV being his biggest influence.

Guitars Jimi Hendrix is also another significant influence of John Mayer and the Monterey Pop Strat as well as the Voodoo Stratocaster can be seen on the Where The Light Is DVD in songs “Slow Dancing In A Burning Room” and “Everyday I have The Blues” respectively. The Strat/Tele Hybrid was used during the Battle Studies Tour.

Guitars The Gibson ES-335 is used extensively for various blues sets, on songs such as “Crossroads” . The Gibson L-5 can be seen featured on songs such as “Gonna Find Another You” on the Where The Light Is DVD. The Gibson SG is almost exclusively used for “Edge of Desire” during the Battle Studies Tour.
