Admit it. You’ve still got a lime-coloured top at the back of your wardrobe that you bought a few summers ago. It looked great by the pool on holiday, but back home it seems less zesty, so you relegated it and the colour in general to the dustbin of styles past. However, as part of an interiors palette, lime’s muted qualities are a very good thing. A nonneutral neutral, it adds colour without overpowering, peps up whites and creams, lifts purples and tones down bold patterns. It’s calming and uncomplicated. Previous artists hav e included David Hockney, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein and for Lon don 2012 the list of UK artists chosen was unveiled at Tate Britain at the start of November. MAKE FEATHERED FRIENDS

Take a tip from top twitcher Chris Packham of TV’s Springwatch and put up a few nesting boxes to lure an array of beautiful birds into your garden. They can be fussy about their digs, so buy openfronted boxes such as this one from Chapelwood (chapelwoodwildlife.co.uk), as well as some with small entry holes for little birds. Place them in a sheltered area, two metres from the ground, and you’ll soon be rewarded.

If you thought growing potatoes was only for those with an allotment, think again. Planting spuds couldn’t be easier, even in a small space. Place a few seed potatoes in an egg box indoors in a cool, light spot to sprout and by May they’ll be ready to plant outside. If your garden’s tiny, use a patio planting bag with a decorative willow surround, such as this one from Harrod Horticultural (harrodhorticultural.com). Put a 20cm layer of John Innes No 3 compost in the bottom, plant four potatoes, shoots pointing upwards, and cover with another layer of compost. As the plants grow, add more compost to cover the stems, which will then develop additional roots and potatoes, until the bag is full. Then leave the plants to grow until ready to harvest in summer when the flowers open.
