I. Design objective: statement of purposes and goals: Working Village is a creative event and work space designed to meet the different needs of micro businesses, freelancers, home-office workers, entrepreneurs, start-ups, tech workers, writers, designers and other savvy professionals. Urban village make a city more sustainable, i.e. more efficient, equitable and livable. Urban villages can perhaps best be understood by simply describing the key characteristics, which constitute their coherent design strategy. Characteristics of urban villages The key characteristics of urban villages are: • High density land uses so that everything within the 'village' is within walking and cycling distance • Mixed land use with offices, shops, businesses and community facilities on main spines or in nodes, surrounded by residential development (housing and working) • Considerable landscaping, including gardens on top of buildings and on balconies and attractive gardens in the public spaces (social gathering and interaction) • A mixture of public, private or cooperative housing with an emphasis wherever possible on families and hence large internal dwelling spaces and spacious community areas( mix different social classes together to help each other) • Extensive provision for children, such as playgrounds, and other safe and creative kinds of play space in good view of dwellings • Recreational opportunities such as sporting facilities (swimming pool, tennis courts, indoor sports etc); • Community facilities such as schools, libraries, childcare centers, aged centers, recreation centers and in some cases small urban farms. If these facilities are not within the village they are always nearby; • Public spaces with strong design features (water, street furniture, sculptures, playgrounds) • A high degree of self-sufficiency for the community for local needs, but with good rail and bus links to the wider city for employment, higher education and so on.

EXAMPLE 1: Social interaction at these villages: In the public spaces of Arabella Park there is a lot of social interaction with people of all ages on foot and bike making use of the greened boulevards and market areas to talk and relax. Some of the urban design elements such as small areas of running water and sculptures provide useful focal points for activity. There is also a steady stream of business people walking through the area. The number of parents and grandparents with children on bikes and playing in the public areas is particularly striking.

Working and housing in villages: The general physical planning principles in Stockholm on which these centers are based can be summarized as follows (Stockholm’s Stads byggnadskontor, 1972): • Site workplaces close to houses; • Minimize distance from houses to shops; • Concentrate service functions in easily accessible areas and make • Premises easily convertible to meet new service needs as times change; • Create housing variety from low 2 storey dwellings with good ground contact; • 4-6 storey’s around courtyards; and 10 - 13 storey’s near stations; • Urban environment to have rich variations in form and color; • Multi-family housing no more than 500m walk to station; • Single family housing no more than 300m from a bus stop; • A bus-rail interchange in all communities and; Centers to be linked and permeated by a coherent network of foot and bicycle facilities separated from roads with the convenience of invalid users in mind. Result of these villages: 1. Equality 2. All citizens will be equal as the doctor has his son or daughter in the school, which hires a teacher. As the teacher will need an engineer to build his house. And vice versa. So no one is higher than the other and all of them complete a one community. 3. Unity 4. Achievement 5. Full employment 6. Educated citizens

Users profile:

General characteristics: Identity: • • • • • •

Young generation now has identity and has the choice to choose their lifestyle, place to live, place to work, and proper living conditions. This may reflect on their choices for housing as well. They may need quiet, simple, or restful house. Others may seek unique and dynamic house. But both should choose the style, theme, structure, and the facilities of the place they live at. After the change of January 25th, youth started to have different characteristics. We can imply these characteristics from photos of youth who was there and joined the revolution. • These are photos reveal different characteristics of the Egyptian new generation.

1. User profile: “Missing Beauty” As for last 3o years, Egyptians miss beauty in everything. They lost beauty in their work, life, houses, and the beauty of soul. Thus, after the revolution we have to return back each one’s beauty. Thus, each one will have different beauty. In other words, everyone has a dream to do, work, or practice any habit has to do it. Thus, in this project, I will design a whole small urban village to enhance the housing conditions with workshops that people ay use it to achieve their dreams beside their houses. These workshops will basically produce small products made from some habits. These habits people should pay more attention to how to benefit from them. Thus, my project will help people to own or share in one workshop or studio to produce what they really want to produce and them exhibit it in the exhibition halls /showrooms to those who live close to them “Katemya heights”. However, I will specify on one client who is the “ The Fashion designer”. This user should have a studio/gallery to work and show his work. In addition, a place for the user’s clients should be provided there. This studio will be shared one between two neighbors. General Client characteristics:

Statement: Fashion Designers spend most of their time working in studios interacting with designers to discuss the latest fashion; for this to happen they need to feel that they are connected to the studio personally and emotionally in order to be encouraged to stay there for long hours.

Users needs in their homes: 1. Depends on the specialist of the owner of the house, we can decide on the usage of the space. For example: an architect may need a studio or gallery in his house. 2. living rooms that had a television and playing area for a kid 3. Lounges and gardens to gather in home and outside

The great social change that took place in the Tahrir Square is considered to be one of the greatest achievements of the revolution. 2. We should spread technology and may be constitute a certain education system for it, as it becomes one of the most important elements in our lives. 3. All the social classes are interacting together without any restrictions regarding the social gap between them. I think the government is the one who made the fear between the two classes. I think we should now consider the social interaction in our housing design, as it will play an important role in developing the social network. 4. Do you want privacy in your housing community?

I think we need privacy now in the house from inside as between the living room and the bedroom. But we should achieve privacy with social gathering at home. 5. What do you plan for your Future in terms of housing and job? After the revolution I started to think in a different way for my future. I need a safe house. I became more care about social interaction between people as it felt the taste of it at el tahrir square. I need a shared garden that I can meet my neighbors and know each other. I need more green areas because we miss the beauty of the green areas for the last decades. As I am a sociable person, I will accept guests and friends at my house. We may take a lunch, watch T.V together, or may work together at home. Regarding the job, I want to establish a separate company for architecture designs, as I love architecture. Case studies i. International case study

Cabrini-Green Housing Complex: Constructed: 1942–1962 Demolished: 1996 Era: The Cabrini-Green development began on Chicago’s North Side in 1942 with row houses named for St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, the Roman Catholic patron saint of immigrants. A few years later, high-rises and mid-rises were added. Eventually Cabrini housed as many as 13,000 people. This is a Plan Vision for the 1st

Design criteria: Le Corbusier’s “Plan V ision” for the 1st Arrondissement in Paris, involved leveling nearly two square miles of historic buildings, and reconfiguring the organic street grid in order to design the modern city. He planned to replace the dense urban fabric with 18 high-rise apartment complexes, which would provide enormous residential density, while continuing to offer residences with light, air and open space. His objective: • Le Corbusier, much like other modern architects and planners, was designing in reaction to the conditions of the 19th Century industrial city; where poverty, disease, congestion, and cruel living conditions were the trademark of developed, industrial cities. • Le Corbusier was offering a new form of living environment, which would address these ills. • However, Le Corbusier’s designs led to other problems associated with high-rise living, such as: social isolation, the concentration of poverty, and the homogeneity of land uses. • North Americans are all to familiar with the housing projects that adopted Le Corbusier’s urban renewal design principles; which are presently being demolished (such as Cabrini-Green in Chicago) or redeveloped (like Regent Park in Toronto). • Le Corbusier was taken with how technology and modernity could be used to transform the way we live;

Paris' 1st Arrondissement The master plan of the whole project is very condensed and has many buildings beside each other. I don’t see the light air and open spaces that mention above in this master plan, as I only see many buildings put beside each other without any organization concept .


however, he failed to understand how design impacts the way we experience the city. • He was attempting to play social engineer, and unfortunately for those who have lived in Le Corbusier inspired projects, he failed miserably. Few projects stand out in the American imagination like Chicago’s Cabrini-Green. Built at the peak of Modernism’s popularity in architecture and urban design, the housing project was designed to be a glistening example of urban planning’s power to overcome the chaos of the urban slum. By the 80’s and 90’s, a short few decades later, it came to symbolize everything that was wrong with inner-city America: drugs, poverty, crime, teen pregnancy—you name it.

Although the CHA (Chicago Housing Authority) had all the best intentions for Cabrini-Green and its residents, ultimately the potent cocktail of low income families, high unemployment rates, drugs, gangs and the high concentration of people in such a small area has left the public housing sector in Chicago and even America with a nasty hangover. CONCLUSION: We can imply from this that isolated building can be positive in terms of achieving privacy for the citizen; however, it may cause chaos that results on crimes and violence activities. Thus, we can achieve privacy for each unit and at the same time give more attention to social interaction between people and increase the security for safety. This example will help my design in achieving private apartments but a the same time we have to care about the safety of the citizens and give them the chance to interact with each other.

Sanabel Is Uniquely Placed In Hadayek Al Ahram, Which Is 10 Minutes Away From Al Remaya Square, 3 K.Ms Away From Al Wahat Road, 2 Kms Away From Cairo - Al Fayoum Road Till Station And Near All The Roads Leading To 6Th Of October City And Giza.

In Sixth of October, and an area of 31 acres, is proud to Mena Housing future commitment to providing the latest youth housing projects in Egypt, the draft Sanabel youth population. The project is characterized Active unique, which is located near all roads passages leading to and from the Sixth of October City, and a distance of 3 kilometers from the road oases and 2 kilometers from the Fayoum road this site to make the draft ears close to many places Entertainment of hotels, clubs and restaurants also the service projects of schools, universities and hospitals.

Design Criteria: •

Optimal exploitation of space is the slogan of the city of Sanabel, all units have been designed with the utmost precision to take advantage of the total area to the fullest to ensure the occupants comfort and luxury.

It is The Biggest Youth Housing Project In Egypt. This Economically Efficient Project Is Built On 31 Acres With 12 Acres Designated To Parks And Recreational Areas And Four Acres Of Services That Include A Shopping Mall, Cinema, Sports And Entertaining Areas And Parking Areas.

Project Design: The project includes all the needs of residents of places dedicated to the services on an area of 4 acres inside the area of sports, and shopping center. In a serious attempt to improve the standard of living inside the ears, the proportion was allocated 12% of the project for the Reading Festival and picnic areas for residents. This addition to the internal planning of the project studied carefully, which provides all means of safety for individuals, and comfort in movement from one place to another. Also the omission of spaces we can wait and cars, which would save time and effort for all residents of the project.

There are two main streets one on the left and the other on the right (represents the red circle 1, 2). There are two building modules sample A and sample B. each sample has a four different apartments designs. Each sample either A or B is grouped beside each other either group of 4 or 5. At the middle of each 4 groups of sample, there is a street that comes from the main street (3) The units are organized in a curve shape. Although the arrangement of the buildings is organized and put in an interesting way, there are no enough public spaces beside each house and the other. All the public spaces are put in on middle place, which is in the facilities area. However, I think that if we disturbed the area of the facilities into parts and put beside 5 groups of buildings a large garden it may be better for social interaction. The facilities and services are put in one middle zone to be used for the whole compound.

Facilities and services:

1. Commercial Center: Due to the importance of malls our lives trendy because they provide diversity assignee and services under one roof, which would save time and effort to those who frequented, we have designed a commercial center on an area of 5000 meters in the space allocated for services to the project, and includes spaces wait cars, ground floor and the first and second The center includes commercial shops and exhibitions for those who wish to start and manage his personal shop next to the his residence and also includes a complex of cinemas. 2. Area sports: Health will not be a prerequisite to have fun with life, we have allocated to the exercise area of 10000 meters high contains many active playgrounds devoted to various sports, including football playgrounds, basketball and tennis. There are also areas devoted to active sports like walking and swimming and also built a Club House on the area of 500 square meters ground floor and first. Purity of the air , many of you can enjoy the breeze, which distinguishes this region from other residential areas other.

Elevations: The different of protrusion in the façade gives more privacy to the balconies.

This flat has the most cross circulation that occurs clearly when we come in from the entrance to reach the bedrooms.

The arrangement of furniture here causes this cross circulation as the small library in front of the entrance make it hard to reach the living and the bedrooms directly.

A good circulation exists between the kitchen and the dining room, and the entrance and the kitchen. And the living and terrace.

Zoning:

As we can see here, the public zone and private zone are intersecting together which means that this apartment fail to achieve the concept of the privacy to the users. The bathroom position is bad, as the guest must pass in front of the bedroom and through the corridor of the private zone to reach the bathroom.

Circulation:

Cross circulation

The circulation of the flat has some negative and cross circulation. For example the circulation of the bath and the living room has a cross circulation.

The position of the bathroom in the private zone causes disturbance to the privacy of the users as it is directly overlooks the bedroom. Thus if there is a guest and wants to use the bathroom, he/she will cross the private zone which includes the bedroom.

• A positive thing to be

considering is the long entrance lobby, which is, can achieve a sort of privacy for the users.

Zoning: •

The zoning is disturbed well as the private zone’s activities are separated from the public’s ones. However, the guests’ toilet should be in the public zone for more privacy and people must pass through the living room to reach the bedrooms.

Ventilation:

The ventilation is good as the kitchen, bathroom, and the bedrooms are ventilated well.

Very bad circulation There is a great cross circulation between the bedrooms and the bathrooms. There is also a great cross circultion between the entrance and the bedrooms

Zoning: •

There is a bad zoning as the apratment lost the concept of the public zone verus the private zone. The position of kitchen right in front of the entrance is very bad as any guest can see clealy what happens in the kitchen. The position of the bathroom beside the kitchen and the enrance and away from bedrooms is very bad realtion. If there is any guest, users will not be able to use the bathroom unless they pass through the living room.

Analysis of the use of spaces: • As we can see that the bedroom takes the biggest percentage in the apartment, which is a reasonable percentage as there are three bedrooms in this flat. • The living room is the second big percentage in the flat. • 22 % is a good percent for the living room and the dining as it enhances social interaction. However, there is a waste of space in the terrace as there is 14% from the flat is terraces. • The corridor is terrible as it is too long and it is unused space.

• There is no need for two terraces. This place may be better use in another bathroom or an office room or the secondary terrace that only used by one bedroom can rearrange to the other side to combine it with the other terrace to be one bog space to be used as a living room and all spaces can use it. • The kitchen space is fine compared to the flat area. However, there is a need for another bathroom in this apartment.

As we divide the apartment to public and private zone, different activities should be done in each one. The public zone is composed of living, dining, kitchen and guest’s bathroom. The public zone is composed of the bedrooms and the bathroom. However, people who want to go to the private zone must pass on the public zone, which may cause disturbance if there are guests. Thus, there is a bad relation between the bedrooms and the entrance. Other than this, the activities are disturbed well.

Circulation: • There is a cross circulation between the bedrooms and the living room as the users MUST pass through the living room to reach the bedrooms. • There is another cross circulation between the kitchen, Guest’s toilet and the living room. As the users MUST pass through the kitchen to reach the bathroom, which disrupting the privacy of the users.

Degree of efficiency: Total space – used space = waste space 149.42 -102.87=46.54 31.2% waste of space Not very high efficiency of using spaces. Linkage Diagram:

Zoning: ✗ The position of the kitchen is located in the private zone beside the bedrooms, which is a big mistake in any plan. ✗The problem is that the kitchen is away from the dining room and from the entrance; however, it is near the bedroom, which it is not correct for ventilation wise. ✗The smell of the kitchen will go through the bedrooms. Second, it will be difficult to prepare the food and cross the bedroom to go to the ding room. ✗Third, the relationship between the entrance and the kitchen makes carrying the stuff to the kitchen difficult. Regarding the bathroom, only one bathroom serves the whole flat. ✗There is no toilet for the guests, which is bad as it may distribute the privacy of the private zone. The elevation has a nice shape; however, it looks symmetric which make it a bit boring.

The streets are not done in a good way as the color of the fences is not good and there is no enough greenery in the street.

III. Site selection: The site is located in new Cairo, specifically at katamiya. The land has a youth residential housing but it is badly made. The housing is ugly and there are no facilities, gardens, clubs, and even a market to buy anything. When I asked a man there about the status of the housing and the condition of living, he told me that they life a miserable life, away from the city, and in an ugly houses. This housing is beside a katemya heights “gated community” , which is a compound for upper class. Thus, I thought that it would be better to demolish this housing area and replace it with an innovative, clean, and developed urban small working village.

The flat is not distributed well as there is a 36% of the flat is only for the living room. However, there is only one small bathroom (nearly 4 meters) for the whole 100 meters apartment. In addition, the kitchen is a bit small. Bedrooms are located in the private zone. Sales 6% 6%

I will only take a small piece of this land, which is 95 * 140 Meters. Thus the whole area will be 13300 Meters. There is 20 % of the land for the public area, which represents 2660 Meters from the whole area. Thus we will have some left overs, which are 10640 Meters. According to my space program sheet, my unit will be 180 Meters +20 Meters for garden around= 195 Meters for each apartment. Each two apartments will share in a studio, which is 20 Meters. There are two exhibition showrooms also each is 600 meters, thus the total area for both showrooms is 1200 Meters. If we divide the whole left over area 9440 over the area of the apartment (200 Meters) and the shared Studio (20 Meters), we will result on having 32 unit in this land.

The purpose of choosing it

This place called " masken el Katemya or masken el shabab" is totally used wrong. The buildings are looking very ugly; there is no greenery around houses, no enough facilities. The space is very large but isn't used well. The other reason for choosing this piece of land is that to achieve equality between people as this land is directly overlooks one of the largest compounds in Egypt, which is "Katemya height". This land will be a small urban village that produce many and different products that can sell it to the compound in front of them or to any other place.

Accessibility:

This land you can access it from the ring road as it is beside el Katemya residential. You also can access it from the 90-­‐axis road.

Context:

This land overlooks an upper class compound, which is “ Katemya Heights”.

View:

The view here considered to be the side overlooks Katemya heights, as the other three sides are desert. Topography: The land is elevated high with a certain slope. Site planning and zoning Suggested arrangement: On unit: In this picture, we can see 6 units overlooking a hexagonal garden. The whole idea about this shape is that to enhance social interaction between people and at the same time have privacy in each unit. The entrance of each apartment will be from a shared garden to talk and interact with each other. At the same time each house will have a private garden with buffers of trees. Total area needed for each house = 200 meters

Space program: Inspriation: Since I am inspired by the American plan's which they use a huge space of the garage, either to use it as a work shop for some mechanical engineers or for the parking use, I will implement this idea in my unit, but with changing its function. I will use it as a room that has a computer and office and some tables to work and study in it. This is a plan from the American Dream houses. I am only interested in the garage. I will change its name to an office or studio room and I will add a door to connect it to the home from inside. And I will leave the door that outside of the home for guests.

The structure of my building: THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EACH BUILDING AND THE OTHER, THERE IS A SHARED WORKSHOP/STUIDO FOR FASHION DESIGN. THE STUDIO WILL BE IN THE GROUND FLOOR AND HAS AN A DOOR FROM THE LEFT/ RIGHT TO EAH ONE HOUSE.

Design concept and identity: Inspirations: I am really interested in the shape of the cube. I want to find a relation between different cubes to form an interesting form. This example shows two cubes are position on the top of the other. It looks very interesting and a new idea.

Another example shows a great building that has modules of cubes positioned in an irregular shape to for some negative spaces in between for other usage like roof garden.

This example shows a flexible building made of cubes and you can form it with the shape you prefer. It is very interesting to have flexibility in forming the design.
